SAI 04

About SAI Since 1995, Study Abroad Italy (SAI) has been dedicated to providing students with an exceptional cultural and educational experience abroad in Italy, and now also in London. We offer you the opportunity to enroll in the very finest schools available to English speaking students. There are NO language requirements for SAI programs; courses are taught in English, unless the courses are part of an Italian Language Program or are offered for students at advanced levels of Italian language proficiency. Students receive U.S. university credit for all courses SAI offers. The SAI framework for living and learning is enhanced in Italy and London by: • Italy and its global significance in the humanities, arts and culture. • Italy’s position and participation in the global geopolitical economy. • Italy’s prestigious role in art and design and its global impact and influence on design worldwide. Design is considered a driver for social change and economic development. • Design in London as a worldwide influence.

Students enrolling in SAI programs will benefit from this unique approach based on over 15 years of experience and expertise in global education. SAI programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to know Italy on a deep level; its history, culture, geography, food, art and people. Focusing on one country has allowed SAI to develop strong ties with our academic partners, resulting in a blended educational and cultural environment that stresses academic integrity, high impact learning, leadership development and global awareness. This results in increased knowledge and skills for students preparing for entry into the work world, graduate schools or other professional education. Students will find that SAI programs offer most areas of study; from business to design; art history to environmental studies; studio arts to political science. SAI provides a combination of

Today’s increasing globalization places new demands on students and decision-makers, and for this reason many undergraduate programs require study abroad. It is critical for today’s student to understand the interconnection of world affairs and to experience, through living abroad, cultural difference and diversity. Educational institutions must prepare today’s student to face a world made smaller by rapid communication, shared commerce and the facility of travel from one place to another. SAI encourages students to broaden their views of the world and their understanding of their roles and responsibilities as global citizens. Through a wide range of course offerings, students may deepen their knowledge of the intersections between art, culture, history and politics; and heighten their awareness of the economic, environmental, and technological factors that influence globalization. Students have opportunities to select courses and participate in activities outside the classroom that may lead to a greater comprehension of global humanitarian concerns and social justice issues.

By discussing issues and making friends from around the world, students begin to see themselves and their homeland from a global perspective. Study abroad students undertake an unforgettable personal journey and SAI is there every step of the way to enhance the experiences of our students.

Following our belief that learning at any stage in life is an enriching and rewarding experience, SAI established VIVA, an Italian based learning center in Sonoma County, California. VIVA was created to share a love of Italian food, wine, culture and heritage with the local community, students of all ages, and visitors from around the globe.

Many U.S. colleges and universities accept the SAI host school transcript directly from our host colleges and universities abroad. For those students from other U.S. schools, SAI provides a U.S. transcript through our U.S. partner schools of record. Fairfield University, In Connecticut provides U.S. credits for SAI students attending: Domus Academy; Milan Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti; Milan Torino Study Abroad; Turin Italiaidea Institute; Rome University of the Arts London; London University of South Florida provides U.S. credits for SAI students attending: Florence University of the Arts; Florence Apicius International School of Hospitality; Florence SUNY Alfred (State University of New York) provides U.S. credits for SAI students attending: Sant’Anna Institute - Sorrento Lingue; Sorrento Portland State University provides U.S. credits for SAI students attending: Siena Italian Studies; Siena John Cabot University in Rome is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Higher Education and issues a U.S. transcript for all JCU courses. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that specific courses will be accepted at their home school.

Advising & Orientation Begin the process as early as possible. SAI stresses the importance of meeting with your academic advisor to discuss how to “save or bank” courses to take while abroad. Get to know your academic advisor and the advisors in the study abroad office so when questions arise, you know where to turn. From the moment that you express interest in SAI programs, there is someone who is there to help you. SAI admissions counselors are knowledgeable about the programs, courses, cities and countries where the schools are located, and have extensive experience in helping students transition from their colleges and universities in their home countries to the SAI schools in Italy and London. It is important to continue communication with your academic advisor on campus to help you in selecting the courses that will fulfill your degree requirements and may help you in your future career and graduate school paths. Study abroad is considered to be a life-changing experience. Both the SAI admissions counselors and the SAI staff in Italy and London can help to enhance this defining moment in your life. No question is ever unimportant at SAI. You can email, phone, or establish communication through Facebook, Twitter or SAI’s live chat website feature. The answer to your question is never out of reach. Upon arrival you will participate in an orientation program. Orientation is intended to familiarize you with the local environment. You will learn some of the local customs to help make your stay in your new city successful. Host school and SAI program policies are thoroughly reviewed during orientation.

www.saiprograms.com

Our Program Coordinators and Advisors hold daily office hours and are always available to offer assistance with personal issues that are common when studying abroad, as well as academic problems that may arise. The Student Services Program, an ongoing and reassuring presence, includes an active calendar of social events and excursions, culminating in a farewell dinner at the end of the term. The SAI on-site staff regularly organizes culinary, cultural, sports and musical events, often free to SAI students. SAI encourages students to participate in these activities as another way to learn about the country and culture.

Internships Internships are an excellent way to extend learning beyond the classroom, explore career options, and build professional networks. SAI Internships are not limited to undergraduate students studying abroad. There are opportunities for recent college graduates and those exploring a new career. Internships offered In Italy allow interns the chance to develop or improve their Italian language skills and gain real world experience in professional environments. SAI offers full-time (15 credit) and part-time (3 credit) internships that include Global Professional Development Seminars. Internship area examples include:

Architecture, Art Restoration, Arts Administration, Advertising, Education, Event Planning, Fashion Design and Merchandising, Hospitality Management, Industrial and Interior Design, International Relations, Law, Marketing, Social Services, Tourism and Visual Communication.

Those interested in an Internship apply using the Internship Application, available on the SAI website, through the SAI California office. You will work in advance with staff in California and in Italy to establish learning objectives and professional goals for the Internship. Full-time intern candidates enroll in a three-week Italian language course prior to the start of the Internship, and during the Internship they will participate in a Global Professional Development Seminar that facilitates understanding of their experience and development, in relation to the global market place. The three-week Italian language course is offered not for credit or with academic credit. Students in semester part time internships for academic credit are required to be full time students and will enroll in 12 credits of other coursework, including one Italian Language course. A 3-credit part-time internship is in addition to the 12 academic credits. In general, students seeking part time internships should choose courses scheduled in the mornings to prevent interference with internship activities. In most instances, those seeking credits arrange prior approval from their home institution and their college or university provides the credits. Those wishing to earn academic credits but are unable to do so through their home institution may arrange to receive a transcript from SAI’s corresponding US school of record. Otherwise, all interns receive a letter of verification of their experiences and a certificate that acknowledges successful completion. These records, along with all recorded aspects of the internship, may be presented to your home school for petition of credit. Full Time Internship Program (max. 15 credits): $9,000 Includes Full Program benefits: 3 weeks Italian Language, Professional Seminar, Double Room Housing, insurance, cell phone, orientation, airport pickup, onsite Advisor and Internship Coordinator, scheduled cultural and social activities, Certificate of Completion. *Optional U.S. credits.

Community Service SAI offers a variety of high impact service activities that help students gain a meaningful global perspective while making a difference in their world. Community service enhances students’ academic, professional, and intercultural development. Students engaged In the community examine real-life problems in real-world settings and collaborate with local residents to address community needs. Students may work on a specific project or may participate in community, cultural or government related programs for a designated time. Examples include working with local immigration officials, teaching English and computer skills, serving in soup kitchens, participating with local medical emergency teams, and interacting with youth. Often, students are transformed from the service experiences and discover a new sense of their own identities and their roles as global citizens.

Community Engagement & Cultural Integration Integrating students into the local culture and community is an important component of SAI programs. SAI’s focus on Italy with an extension in London includes a commitment to good citizenship and involvement in the neighboring communities where we have our programs. SAI’s strong ties in the communities benefit students who are seeking active, engaged learning and service outside of the classroom. SAI provides academic internships, service learning, volunteer programs, and community-based research projects, with the overall goal of improving the quality of life for the community. Students will explore their own cultural identity with respect to the local culture while giving back to their host communities. Not only do these programs and projects have advantages for the communities, but experts agree that these types of activities add an extra dimension to living and learning abroad, help to develop knowledge and skills for the global marketplace, and from a practical perspective, serve as boosters to resumes and graduate school applications. For many, being a volunteer abroad represents an opportunity they simply haven’t had time to realize back home, where they juggle work, school, and busy lives. As a volunteer, students have the opportunity to explore their own culture, ideas and expectations with respect to the local realities they will encounter, while at the same time giving back to their host community. The relationships made as a result of these experiences can be life long and life

changing for both students and locals alike. Most SAI programs offer volunteer opportunities and your SAI Advisor will guide you through the process of choosing a position that suits you. In addition, many SAI sites offer a variety of internships. You can find information on both volunteer and internship opportunities in more detail at the SAI website.

Excursions - Program Inclusive Trips SAI Semester Full Programs include a 2 night/3-day excursion, in the Program Cost (not available for London program). Each program site has its own excursion destination listed in that school’s pages of this brochure. A variety of one day excursions and events offers students a rich calendar of activities.

FLORENCE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS & APICIUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF HOSPITALITY

FLORENCE

The City

Student Life

The beauty and wealth of Florence has attracted every society, from Romans to our present world. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is the art and architecture, and the Renaissance that blossomed there from 1400 – 1600. No other place in Europe reflects the birth and development of modern society more than Florence, through its exquisite examples of art and architecture. The Renaissance or “rebirth”, the revolutionary time that followed the Dark Ages of Europe, changed the world forever by placing importance on the individual and on creativity.

SAI recognizes that a well-rounded study abroad experience includes learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By providing a strong Student Services program, our staff aims to support students in their personal growth through daily cultural interactions both in Florence and as they travel beyond.

The program’s location in the historic center of Florence offers students the opportunity to live in the heart of the Renaissance while experiencing the modern, thriving city of today. The streets of Florence still ring with the vibrant culture that began over 600 years ago; the center has changed little, combining the elegance and quality of the Renaissance style with a stunning blend of modern design. It is an immensely fun city, filled with people from all parts of the world. The lush hills and mountains of Tuscany surround the city, offering themselves for exploration on afternoons or weekends. Though Florence has a rich history, today it is an important center for contemporary art, fashion design, graphics and business. We invite you to experience this contrast of past and present with other students from around the world that come to study in Florence.

www.saiprograms.com

At the beginning of each term, students participate in an orientation during which they are given general information, school policies, a profile of Italian culture, a guided walking tour of the city and school premises, an Italian language placement test and a final course registration. You will meet your advisors at orientation, and they will be available to assist you with any academic or personal issues that may arise throughout the term. Advisors also plan frequent social events for students, ranging from restaurant dinners of regional cuisine to the wildly popular local soccer matches.

FLORENCE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS

Host School As an urban institute, Florence University of the Arts (FUA) is comprised of several buildings; Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, Palazzo Doni, Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo and Villa Brilli Peri.

Villa Brilli Peri houses most of the food and wine studies. This palazzo hosts classes in the professional kitchens and Wine Appreciation teaching classroom.

The school’s main building, Palazzo Doni, is located steps away from the Santa Croce Church (Basilica di Santa Croce). This Renaissance building was once owned by the Doni family, patrons of Michelangelo. The classroom used as “Aula Michelangelo” was once the Doni family master bedroom, where Michelangelo’s commissioned work was displayed.

Although these buildings hold historical meaning in Florence, contemporary Italian interior design can be found within all of them. The palazzi are large and provide an ideal setting for the studios, classrooms, administrative offices, internet facilities and library located within.

Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, located across the street from Palazzo Doni, hosts classrooms, as well as an advanced photography studio, including professional dark room. Palazzo Strozzi is also the location of the Palestra (the gym) that all FUA students are free to use. Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo accommodates the Italian language and Italian literature departments of Florence University of the Arts. In addition, Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo hosts regular events which include afternoon lectures and a film series as well as special evening events such as book launches, lectures, discussion groups and conferences. I found the facilities at FUA amazing, The computer labs were so great as well as the photo labs. The technology available exceeded my expectations, as did the location and kindness of the staff. There was no question I had that went unanswered and the genuine sense of welcome and guidance from the staff was immeasurable. ~ Summer student

I loved how in the wine program, we were so fully immersed in the world of wine. Living in Florence and being part of the Italian community, all contributed to the comprehensiveness of the Apicius Wine Program. The fact that all the professors have active careers in the wine industry enabled us to have exclusive access to wineries, tours, and tastings which was simply priceless – this is hard to find anywhere else and seems especially unique to the program. The Program really represented what it is like to work in the industry and allowed me to picture myself in the field. ~ Student, AISH Fall

ROME

The City

Student Life

It has been said that more than a lifetime is needed to experience all that the city of Rome has to offer. It is a city layered with art and antiquities encompassing 2,500 years of history — from the Coliseum, the Imperial Forum, and the Roman Pantheon, to Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museum. The city of Rome is home to over five million people and is a global center of business, diplomacy, religion, film, art, and fashion.

SAI students participate in an orientation program, which provides information on the school and its policies, the city of Rome, and what to expect while living abroad. By the end of orientation, students will have a good understanding of how to find their classes, buy supplies and groceries, and move about independently in the city. Students have many opportunities to adventure beyond the city of Rome. You may join the regular excursions organized by SAI, or you may choose to travel on your own. An efficient rail system allows easy access to places of interest and many low cost airlines offer convenient travel to other European cities. JCU students are offered a variety of co-curricular activities both on and off campus. Students may become active Student Council members, or participate on the debate team. Intramural soccer, basketball and volleyball are available, as well as swimming at a nearby pool. Several gyms are available in Trastevere, within easy walking distance of the campus. Films are shown at the school every week through the cinema club, and the university’s theater group stages a major dramatic or musical production twice a year.

Program Coordinators are all great! They are incredibly helpful and willing to answer questions. It has been such a relief to have that form of support here. ~ Fall student

Since 1972, John Cabot University (JCU) has provided an exceptional academic and cultural opportunity for students - the chance to obtain an American university education in the heart of the international city of Rome. ALL classes at John Cabot are taught in English and there is NO Italian language requirement. In an increasingly complex and inter-related world, an education with a global perspective is essential. JCU students encounter a rigorous liberal arts curriculum amidst centuries of art and architecture, in the center of one of the world’s great modern cities. John Cabot University maintains two campuses in Rome, each with its own personality. Walk through the Porta Settimiana (built in the third century) and you will find JCU’s Frank J. Guarini Campus. Located on the grounds of the Accademia dei Lincei, the National Science Academy, where Galileo was a member, this historic building takes full advantage of Rome’s mild climate, opening onto patios, terraces and a spacious “Lemon Tree” courtyard surrounded by bougainvillea. Students regularly congregate in these open spaces and terraces to study and socialize. In addition to classrooms, the Guarini Campus houses the Aula Magna Regina auditorium, which hosts lectures, concerts, plays and films; the Frohring Library, with its study rooms, multimedia lab and media room; as well as JCU administrative offices.

Everything’s just a stone’s throw away from Italiaidea: Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline, the Parliament and the Governmental Palace, Piazza del Popolo and Via del Corso. You will encounter a richness of sites, making it difficult to choose how to spend your free time. You will discover that Rome is an open-air theater which never ceases to amaze. It is an incredible city which enchants all with its great panoramas, piazzas, buildings, churches, ruins and museums; a great world capital which continues to maintain an authentic and traditional atmosphere in the peace of its small streets and its splendid piazzas bursting with people and life. “Rome is the great mother”, Fellini said, “who accepts all and where all find what they are looking for: art, cuisine, religion, cinema, nightlife or the peace of a boat-trip on the river, the boutiques of the major Italian designers or the small artisan workshops”.

JCU’s Tiber Campus, located on the banks of Rome’s famous Tiber river and a five-minute walk from Guarini, is a spacious, state-ofthe-art large building with smart classrooms, a student lounge and JCU offices such as Student Services and Counseling. Designed by the Italian modernist architect Angelo di Castro in 1958, it was completely renovated to accommodate 21st-century learning styles and technologies, while maintaining the architectural integrity of this former elementary school. Both John Cabot University campuses are wireless and set up to encourage dialogue and collaboration among the international student population. Student Clubs The following is a list of student clubs currently available to all students and JCU encourages the participation of visiting study abroad students in the clubs. Even if you do not join a club, you are welcome to participate in club events. • Multicultural Club: This club celebrates the diversity of all students at JCU and organizes cultural events based on various ethnicities and cultures. • Student Government – at least one visiting student is required to be part of the voting body giving visiting students a voice at JCU • The Matthew (The JCU student newspaper): The mission of this club is to provide news about the university and the city of Rome, to inspire students to explore their surroundings and to encourage the achievement of excellence. • The Environmental Club • S.T.A.N.D. (Students Taking Action in Darfur) • Model United Nations • Italian Cultural Club

Academic Programs JCU offers a wide range of courses with current interests and contemporary subjects in mind. Courses range from Business, Communication, and Political Science to Art History, Literature and Studio Arts. Generally, courses at John Cabot University carry three units of credit. In one semester, a student may enroll in four or five courses, earning 12 or 17 credits. Two summer sessions of six weeks each allow students to take one or two courses each session. Semester Program

Students choose 12-17 credits (4 or 5 courses) from course offerings in our Fall/Spring Schedule.

Global Leadership Certificate

Students choose 12-17 credits (4 or 5 courses) from course offerings in our Fall/Spring Schedule, PLUS Volunteer or Service Learning component.

Summer Sessions

Two 6-week sessions offered; students choose 3 - 7credits per session.

SAI Global Leaders Certificate The SAI Global Leaders Certificate, offered at our Rome program, is designed to enrich students’ experiences while studying abroad and to acknowledge their academic and service work by providing an additional credential beyond a university transcript. The city of Rome offers students unique opportunities to link classroom learning to real world experiences, while living and studying in a dynamic international capital city. The Global Leaders Certificate is based on the premise that students engaged in their own communities and abroad have increased opportunities to develop leadership skills that contribute to academic and career success. While in Rome, students will gain awareness of leadership strategies that can be applied in local and global contexts. Students will broaden their awareness of global issues and deepen their knowledge of the local host community’s role in an increasingly interconnected world through exploration of research, engagement in community services and interaction with experts and leaders. Mentoring and structured reflection are integrated into the Certificate Program. SAI coordinators in Rome serve as mentors and meet regularly with students to discuss their progress and perspectives on their individual and group experiences.

www.saiprograms.com

The Global Leaders Certificate enhances leadership skills by helping students to understand themselves in relationship to the world community. Both the academic and service components enable students to identify economic, political and cultural forces that shape the global market and influence global leadership. When applying to SAI, students must indicate on their application the Global Leaders Certificate in their Rome program option. Students will work with the SAI Admissions Counselor to choose at least one designated global awareness course. The course(s) selected will help students develop knowledge and skills related to an aspect of global awareness such as cultural values and practices; global systems and their interconnectedness; humanitarian issues; environmental concerns and international relations. Further information on the Global Leaders Certificate can be found on our website, http://www.saiprograms.com/rome/jcu/our-programs.

Internships John Cabot University’s unique relationship with leading multinational corporations, embassies, media and international organizations gives SAI students the opportunity to participate in exclusive internship programs. Former students have interned at the U.S. Embassy, Price Waterhouse Coopers Advisory, FAO, IDLO, IFAD, NATO, World Food Program, CNN, Vatican Radio, Sotheby’s Italy and many other companies. In order to participate in the internship program students must meet the following criteria: • Minimum 3.0 GPA • Junior or Senior standing

Interested students should contact SAI Admissions, explaining the type of internship they are interested in, along with a copy of their resume. Please note that internship placements look to meet a company’s need as well as the student’s and often require an inperson interview. Knowledge of the Italian language is helpful, but not required. Students interested in an internship for credit should contact us at least a semester in advance, giving ample time to develop possibilities that would benefit all parties involved and match students with a faculty advisor. Non-credit Internships are also available.

(NOT ALL COURSES OFFERED EVERY TERM PLEASE SEE CLASS SCHEDULE ON OUR WEBSITE)

I look back on studying abroad everyday and wish I were still there. It changed me for the better, I figured out what I want to do with my life. I’m moving back to Europe after I graduate and I am thankful everyday for the decision I made to study in Italy. It was the best experience of my life, hands down. ~ Spring student

The City Nestled in the rolling hills in the heart of Tuscany, just 70 miles south of Florence, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. As an important money-lending center, Siena prospered as a city-state. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. One can wander through tucked-away squares and tour museums and churches that are home to countless renowned works of Byzantine, Renaissance and High Renaissance art. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is a major attraction and is also a bustling university town. One of the oldest in Europe, the University of Siena was founded in 1240 and currently enrolls more than 20,000 students. The city offers exciting sporting and cultural events year round, including one of the top basketball teams in Europe, the AC Siena soccer team, many theatrical events and a series of concerts sponsored by the famous Chigiana Musical Academy and the Siena Jazz Summer Festival. Siena truly is an amazing place to do your study abroad experience. There is such an incredible amount of culture and history within the winding roads and surrounding walls that, after just a few months here, it will feel like your home away from home. ~ Summer student

Siena is perhaps most famous for the heart stopping horse race, Il Palio. This spectacular event takes place twice each summer in the central square of the city and has roots that can be traced back centuries. The exhilarating bareback race pits each of the city’s 17 neighborhoods, or contrade, against one another and is not to be missed – the victorious neighborhood celebrates for an entire year!

TYPICAL SEMESTER EXCURSIONS

Group Excursions Each semester program includes a 4-day group excursion to a chosen location. This excursion follows the Intensive Italian Course (the first 3 weeks of the semester) and includes some relaxation time as well as visits to culturally significant sites. Several half-day and full-day excursions give students a wide-ranging and meaningful experience of Tuscany (and other regions of Italy) of the sort tourists rarely have. We walk through the Tuscan countryside from one unspoiled small town to the next, passing along ancient Roman byways and through woods where locals hunt for mushrooms and gather herbs; visit farms that produce wine, olive oil and pecorino cheese; relax in one of the region’s many natural hot springs; experience traditional Tuscan festivals such as Carnevale in Foiano della Chiana. Each term also includes a visit to Florence and the Uffizi Gallery, as well as an Italian Opera in Florence or Rome and a day trip hiking along the Tuscan coast to an unspoiled beach in the Maremma Region of Tuscany.

• Welcome Reception • Natural Hot Springs Spa • 4-Day Group Excursion • Hiking: Tuscan Coast • I Bottini: Siena’s Underground Aqueducts • Wine Tasting: Montalcino/Montepulciano • Assisi and Perugia: Nestle’s Perugina Chocolate Factory • Day Trip to Florence • Typical Products: Cinta Senese Prosciutto & Pecorino Cheese Tastings • Opera Performance • Carnival Festivities in Foiano della Chiana (Spring only) • Tuscan Cooking Lessons • Visits to Tuscan Hilltowns • Museum Visits in Siena • Farewell Dinner TYPICAL SUMMER EXCURSIONS • Welcome Reception • Overnight Excursion: Tuscan Coast • Tuscan Cooking Lessons • Visit Tuscan Hill-towns • Wine Tasting • Day Trip to Florence • Museum Visits in Siena • Il Palio Horserace and Festival • Farewell Dinner

Housing All participants are accommodated with local host families. This home stay is an integral and indispensable part of all SIS programs, offering students the opportunity to make life-long friends, reinforce the language skills acquired during daily lessons and to experience modern Italian culture from “the inside.” SIS’s carefully selected families, whether a single mother, a young married couple with children or an elderly widow, are all experienced in hosting American students. The host families view this experience as a form of cultural exchange and are eager to share their version of Italian culture with program participants. Home stays include three meals a day, seven days a week.

SIENA ITALIAN STUDIES

In many courses, learning is not limited to the classroom. Whenever possible, Siena Italian Studies integrates field excursions and visits to enhance comprehension and provide students with a multifaceted experience. For example, art history courses naturally include visits to museums, churches and sites of artistic relevance in Siena, Florence and other towns in the region so that students can see first-hand the masterpieces discussed in class. Cultural Anthropology students may attend traditional local festivals and visit museums dedicated to aspects of Tuscan folk culture; students studying Italian Costume will have the opportunity to visit museums dedicated to textiles, costumes and individual Italian designers in the Florence/Prato area, while students studying the History of Italian Cuisine might visit a local cheese making farm and attend a hands-on cooking lesson, and the list goes on.

Language and culture make up an inseparable binomial; who can really say whether it’s culture that generates language, or language that generates culture? This is the basis of Siena Italian Studies’ version of Full-Immersion: Culture, Content and Service (FICCS). For SIS, full-immersion is not a form of ‘torture’ or trial-by-fire in which only those who can quickly overcome language barriers survive; on the contrary, it’s a gradual and unforced process of discovering a new culture through continuous and constant exchanges with locals, a coming to awareness of the multiple linguistic and cultural capacities around us and within us.

TURIN

The City As the site for the 2006 Olympics, Turin (Torino in Italian) is the new “hot” spot in Italy, drawing a lot of attention from all over Italy and Europe. Like most cities in Italy, Torino has ancient roots and was even the capital of Italy at one time, but today it is a large bustling commercial center, with major industries ranging from auto design and manufacturing, to important academic and research institutes. The universities of Torino draw students and professors from around the world, creating a rich academic and cultural environment. The many cultural events around the city offer study abroad students an endless choice of activities. Torino museums offer a wide variety of interests, from the famous Egyptian Museum to the futuristic National Cinema Museum, while its many parks make Torino one of the greenest towns in Italy. The center of Torino is mostly constructed on a rectangular grid with streets and squares named after historical events and leading citizens of the city. Torino’s varied past survives in the Roman and Medieval structures around Piazza Castello, the heart of the city, and in the Baroque palaces and neoclassical buildings that line the surrounding streets and alleys. Miles of pedestrian-friendly porticos (covered arcades) allow for relaxing window-shopping strolls in any kind of weather.

www.saiprograms.com

As such, Torino has a long history of coping with the modern world, something that is unusual for the rest of Italy, with the exception of Milan and Genoa, the other two highly industrialized Italian cities. Unlike the other two components of the socalled Italian ‘industrial triangle,’ Torino cultivated an intellectual class whose main ambition was to make a positive impact on the Italian modern age. One could even say that the historical role of Torino has been to think ahead, compared to the rest of Italy, from the Savoy master plan to unify the country to the city’s present role as a knowledge-based cosmopolitan town. With the Alps as its backdrop and the river Po passing through it, Torino is a stunning town. Easy access to ski resorts and Italian Riviera beaches, make Torino an ideal location any time of year.

Student Life Torino is the 3rd largest academic city in Italy in student population. Because of this, TorinoSA is able to offer its students frequent language exchanges with Italian college students, allowing study abroad students the distinct opportunity to meet local students, exchange ideas and build friendships. The city center is an easy place to live, with the excitement of many shows, installations and fairs regularly held around town. Locals enjoy literature, theater and opera, and the region is known for its excellent cuisine - chocolate is a passion for Torino residents.

Study Abroad Italy aims to create a comfortable living environment for each student by providing safe, well-maintained, student-level housing in quality apartments. Program staff will be on hand to greet and help orient you to your new apartment and city, and will remain available to answer questions and assist with maintenance needs that may arise. Student housing is in the center of Torino, some directly across the street from the school and others within an easy bus ride or a leisurely walk. All are located within a 10-15 minute walk from either Porta Nuova or Porta Susa, the two major Torino train stations. Apartments are furnished and include a living room, a kitchen with basic supplies, bed linens, and a washing machine. During the day Torino is a vibrant, hard-working and modern city but at night it puts on a different face and is transformed: the streets light up and clubs and bars fill with people out to enjoy the nightlife. Trattorias, ethnic restaurants, wine bars, night clubs and live-music clubs are found throughout the downtown area, from the historic Quadrilatero Romano section, to the San Salvario neighborhood, to the Murazzi riverfront where former warehouses and boathouses have been turned into bars and clubs. Torino’s proximity to the Italian Riviera and other cities such as Milan, offers students the opportunity to easily explore other areas of Italy. The city’s airport offers discount flights to all corners of Europe.

Host School Torino Study Abroad (TorinoSA) is located in the center of Torino, where students will experience life in this modern city firsthand. The school’s frescoed rooms are enhanced by modern architecture and technology, merging the past glories of historical Torino with its modern high-tech environment. The mission of TorinoSA is to incorporate the history, culture, science, law, business and technology of modern Italy into an academic program of excellence. Courses are taught in English by American-trained PhD professors who possess a passion for teaching and robust research. Much of their individual research expertise is reflected in professional publications. The school takes full advantage of its location, history and future prospects using the natural, industrial, historical, cultural, social and economic resources that the city of Torino offers. Accordingly, TorinoSA offers students the opportunity to experience modern Italian life, while enrolling in courses about Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque topics as well as contemporary Italian society. At TorinoSA students can study Italian language, film and culture, examine global environmental and legal issues, experience contemporary art and modern design, explore areas of science, or study music in a vibrant city with historic musical roots. In addition, TorinoSA has established important partnerships with local universities allowing students to take part in some very unique programs. TorinoSA is currently partnered with Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi (Music Program) and University College of Turin (Econonmics, Finance and Law Program).

Internships Torino Study Abroad’s semester or summer internship program offers the opportunity to work in the following areas: museums and other cultural organizations, industry and technology, government, and educational institutions. Students can earn up to 3 credits, depending on internship. For qualified applicants all internship placements will be guaranteed prior to departure.

Academic Program Torino is recognized worldwide as a Baroque capital, treasuring significant Roman vestiges and commanding a wealth of suburban Savoy royal palaces and their surrounding grounds. Accordingly, Torino Study Abroad offers classes in Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque topics. But given the intricate historical background of Torino, TorinoSA courses also focus on modern and contemporary Italian history. Only recently was Torino rediscovered as an arts capital, being previously labeled by many as “the industrial capital of Italy”. Torino Study Abroad offers to the American and International student many of the standard courses and activities other program do. Fortunately Torino Study Abroad’s emphasis on modern Italy, its history of coping with industrial modernity, and its current attempt to refashion and reinvent itself for the XXI century uniquely separates it from the pack. Semester programs Semester students have the option of enrolling in a Fall or Spring semester, or combining both terms to create a one-year study abroad program. Free Elective

The majority of students who study abroad say that one of the most valuable aspects of living in a European city is the opportunity to travel to other European cities. Milan’s geographical location allows easy access not only to all major Italian cities, but also to major European centers; the Swiss border is less than an hour away. Students can ski in the Alps in the winter months and enjoy Lake Garda, Como, and other famously beautiful Italian lakes in warmer times.

Students studying design in Milan will enjoy daily life in a dynamic, modern, international city. Milan (Milano in Italian), the “second city of Italy,” located on the plains of the northern province of Lombardy surrounded by an arc of mountains and lakes, is a world-renowned, international center for fashion, design, finance, industry, and calcio (soccer, as Americans call it). It has great museums, a huge castle, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals on earth, and one of the world’s most famous paintings (Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper). The circuit of annual fashion shows, design fairs and exhibitions in the city attracts many international visitors and celebrities. Despite its workorientated persona as Italy’s economic powerhouse, Milan has many hidden gems: apart from the discount designer outlet stores, you’ll have time to discover the Italian dolce vita (sweet life) in the many outdoor cafés around the city.

London is an extraordinary city, full of art and culture, while also being one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. With the efficient subway (or “tube”) it is easy to traverse, while sites on the European continent are an easy weekend trip away.

During the first three days after arrival, the SAI Program Coordinator organizes a series of meetings and events designed to provide students with a thorough orientation of the city and surrounding area, along with a full explanation of the academic program and program policies. By the end of orientation, students will have a clear understanding of their new environment and will feel confident moving about the city independently.

London life and exciting cultural institutions are an important part of the learning environment for students. The school’s main central London buildings are within walking distance of the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Britain and only a short underground or bus ride away from the Tate Modern. Because London is so cosmopolitan students will get to know people from around the world without struggling through a second language.

UAL is determined to sustain and enhance quality to provide an unrivalled opportunity for students to select their career pathways, enabling them to realize their potential and make a significant contribution to the 21st century. UAL believes that their graduates - artists, performers and designers - have strategic roles to play in setting the agendas by which we shape our lives, not only now but in the future. However it is not only formal cultural institutions that are important to UAL students. Just as vital is the informal street life and the network of events, clubs and galleries that students contribute to, develop and organize themselves. By creating art, design and performances, and presenting these to the general public, UAL students learn by doing and enrich London in the process. Former UAL staff and students include some of the most important British and international artists working over the past 150 years, from May Morris, the daughter of William Morris, and William Lethaby who founded the Central School, to Lucien Freud and Frank Auerbach, who studied fine art at St. Martin’s in the middle of the 20th century, to the latest wave of exciting British fashion designers including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, who have changed the face of international fashion in the 1990s. Many well-known actors including Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan have also studied at UAL.

Semester Programs UAL faculty are practicing artists, designers and communications professors who have an outstanding reputation for their level of teaching, which has been officially recognized by the Quality Assurance Agency, the UK’s quality watchdog for Higher Education. Semester Students have the option of enrolling in subject specific programs or free elective programs, while summer students have the option of a several 3 – 8 week programs. SUBJECT INTENSIVE PROGRAMS (SIP) Study abroad students enrolled in an SIP program are fully integrated into the degree courses and study alongside UK degree seeking students. Since the study of art and design is different in Europe, students will find they are working more independently than at their home schools. In addition, students are encouraged to take a hands-on, project oriented approach to learning. Professors offer guidance and support to visiting students in order to help them fit seamlessly into their program of choice. Students will earn 15 U.S. credits per semester. Each subjectspecific semester program at UAL is designed with the goal of maximizing the student experience; both in terms of providing a framework for academic inquiry, as well as offering each student the opportunity to work under the mentorship of leading industry professionals. Upon acceptance, students will be placed for the semester, in either Year 1 or 2 courses of the program, depending on the student’s portfolio. FREE ELECTIVE PROGRAMS Students wanting a diverse course curriculum may choose to enroll in the Free Elective Program, which allows greater latitude in course selection. Each program consists of a set curriculum with the chance to choose from several elective courses for a total of 18 credits. Courses are offered in Fine Art, Fashion, Graphic and Interior Design. Please see Course List on page 84 for complete list of courses within each program.

Participating Universities & Colleges SAI accepts students from ALL schools, including those not directly affiliated with SAI. An affiliation with your school is not required. However, SAI has formal Affiliation Agreements with many universities and colleges in the U.S. and other countries. Students enrolling from one of our affiliated schools receive a variety of benefits, such as fee reductions. Affiliated students should discuss their plans to attend an SAI program with the study abroad office at their home school. Affiliated schools guarantee their students will receive credit for courses from their home institution and will also assist in the procedure to use financial aid to study abroad. It is important that you meet with your study abroad advisor to determine how program fees are paid. Some schools require students to pay all fees directly to SAI; others require students to pay their home institution fees and the school will cover the cost of the study abroad program; still others will require students to pay certain fees and their home institution will pay others. Be sure to discuss this with your study abroad advisor in order to be clear about the procedure your college or university follows in its affiliation with SAI.

www.saiprograms.com

Students are responsible for verifying transfer credit before beginning their program. While affiliated schools guarantee credit, this does not guarantee every course will transfer, or that it will transfer to your major area of study. You will want to meet with your advisor for a final determination. Students from affiliated universities and colleges must enroll through their study abroad office in order to be certain they will benefit from the affiliation in place. If you are uncertain about your college or university’s affiliation with SAI, drop by your school’s study abroad office and discuss it with an advisor or contact the SAI office directly.
