About SAI inspiring creativity • All courses taught in English • Program fee includes housing • Students from ANY school, affiliated or non-affiliated, can attend SAI Programs
Since 1995, SAI has been dedicated to providing students with innovative cultural and educational experiences abroad. Our flagship programs in Italy offer a breadth and depth of knowledge in the creative arts, design, fashion, social sciences, natural sciences and business. SAI programs in Italy enable students to gain a deeper, more meaningful understanding of a globally significant country, rich in artistic culture and traditions. There are no language requirements for any SAI program. Courses are taught in English, unless offered at advanced levels for students with Italian proficiency. SAI Italy programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to know Italy on a deeper level; its history, culture, geography, food, art and people. Our historical focus on one country has resulted in strong ties throughout Italy and excellent resources for our academic partners. Your experience will create a lifetime of memories.
SAI Beyond Italy SAI is an innovator in the collaborative design and delivery of learning experiences abroad, providing experiential and classroom-based programs that enhance cultural awareness and examine creativity in a contemporary global context. London is a vibrant global center for art and design, that has historically embraced innovation and inspired creativity. As in Italy, students reach beyond the traditional classroom for a deeper understanding of a range of disciplines, including fashion, art and design, theatre, and communication. Students benefit greatly by attending SAI programs at our top ranked partner schools, including professional encounters and world famous alumni.
www.saiprograms.com
Students benefit from this unique approach, based on 18 years of experience and expertise in global education. You will experience a blended educational and cultural environment that stresses academic integrity, high impact learning, leadership development and global awareness. The result is uniquely enhanced knowledge and skills for students preparing to enter the work world, graduate school, career advancement or professional development. SAI programs offer most areas of study; from business to design; art history to environmental studies; studio arts to political science and more. SAI provides a combination of excellent academic course work in environments that are cultural treasures and centers of innovation in Italy and London. Today’s increasing globalization places new demands on students and decision-makers, and for this reason many undergraduate programs require study abroad. It is critical for today’s student to understand the interconnection of world affairs and to experience, through living abroad, cultural difference and diversity. Educational institutions must prepare today’s student to face a world made smaller by rapid communication, shared commerce and the facility of travel from one place to another. SAI encourages students to broaden their views of the world and their understanding of their roles and responsibilities as global citizens. Through a wide range of course offerings, students may deepen their knowledge of the intersections between art, culture, history and politics; and heighten their awareness of the economic, environmental, and technological factors that
influence globalization. Students have opportunities to select courses and participate in activities outside the classroom that may lead to a greater comprehension of global humanitarian concerns and social justice issues. By discussing issues and making friends from around the world, students begin to see themselves and their homeland from a global perspective. Study abroad students undertake an unforgettable personal journey and SAI is there every step of the way to enhance the experiences of our students.
SAI
No matter what program or what location, SAI offers top quality academic programs that encourage self-discovery in a comfortable, supportive living and learning environment. SAI’s vision is to provide superior academic, living, social and cultural experiences that allow students to enjoy their time abroad, while nurturing their talents and challenging their minds.

Advising & Orientation Begin the process as early as possible. SAI stresses the importance of meeting with your academic advisor to discuss how to “save” or “bank” courses to take while abroad. Get to know your academic advisor and the advisors in the study abroad office so when questions arise, you know where to turn. From the moment that you express interest in SAI programs, there is someone who is there to help you. SAI admissions counselors are knowledgeable about the programs, courses, cities and countries where the schools are located, and have extensive experience in helping students transition from their colleges and universities in their home countries to the SAI schools abroad. It is important to continue communication with your academic advisor on campus to help you in selecting the courses that will fulfill your degree requirements and may help you in your future career and graduate school paths. Study abroad is considered to be a life-changing experience. Both the SAI admissions counselors and the SAI staff abroad can help to enhance this defining moment in your life. No question is ever unimportant at SAI. You can email, phone, or establish communication through Facebook, Twitter or SAI’s live chat website feature. The answer to your question is never out of reach. Upon arrival you will participate in an orientation program, intended to familiarize you with the local environment. You will learn some of the local customs to help make your stay in your new city successful. Host school and SAI program policies are thoroughly reviewed during orientation.
Community & Cultural Integration As a result of our strong ties to the local communities, SAI offers a variety of high impact service activities that help students gain a meaningful global perspective while making a difference in their world. Community service enhances students’ academic, professional, and intercultural development. Students engaged in the community examine real-life problems and collaborate with local residents to address community needs. Students may work on a specific project or participate in community, cultural or government related programs for a designated time. Examples include working with local immigration officials, teaching English and computer skills, serving the elderly community, participating with local medical emergency teams, or providing services to youth. Often, students are transformed from the service experiences and discover a new sense of their own identities and their roles as global citizens.

SAI provides service learning, volunteer programs and community-based research projects with the overall goal of improving the quality of life for the community. Students will explore their own cultural identity with respect to the local culture while giving back to their host communities. Not only do these programs and projects have advantages for the communities, but experts agree that these types of activities add an extra dimension to living and learning abroad, help to develop knowledge and skills for the global marketplace, and from a practical perspective, serve as boosters to resumes and graduate school applications. For many, being a volunteer abroad represents an opportunity they simply haven’t had time to realize back home, where they juggle work, school, and busy lives. As a volunteer, students have the opportunity to explore their own culture, ideas and expectations with respect to the local realities they will encounter, while at the same time giving back to their host community. The relationships made as a result of these experiences can be life long and life changing for both students and locals alike. Most SAI programs offer volunteer opportunities and your SAI Advisor will guide you through the process of choosing a position that suits you. In addition, many SAI sites offer a variety of internships. You can find information on both volunteer and internship opportunities in more detail at the SAI website.
Our Program Coordinators and Advisors hold daily office hours and are always available to offer assistance with personal issues that are common when studying abroad, as well as academic problems that may arise. The Student Services Program, an ongoing and reassuring presence, includes an active calendar of social events and excursions, culminating in a farewell dinner at the end of each term. The SAI on-site staff regularly organizes culinary, cultural, sports and musical events, often free to SAI students. SAI encourages students to participate in these activities as another way to learn about the country and culture.

SAI will accommodate roommate requests when requests are mutual. SAI student apartments are assigned as single gender housing, (all male or all female). Students seeking male/female shared housing options should contact SAI to discuss their needs. A housing request form is included in the application. SAI provides ongoing support and assistance for students to create and sustain safe, comfortable living environments. Our staff will greet you and orient you to your new housing and city. HOUSING
Homestays are offered in Sorrento, Siena and Florence. Homestay typically includes breakfast, (dinner may be added) and use of the washing machine. Students may choose a single room or a double room. Students may meet with local experts to discuss ways in which their communities are addressing environmental concerns. One intent of this living community is to develop low impact living habits, such as preparing meals with local foods, which reduces the environmental footprint. These types of skills are invaluable in preparing for success in their personal and professional lives. The City
Student Life
The beauty and wealth of Florence has attracted every society, from Romans to our present world. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is the art and architecture, and the Renaissance that blossomed there from 1400 – 1600. No other place in Europe reflects the birth and development of modern society more than Florence, through its exquisite examples of art and architecture. The Renaissance or “rebirth”, the revolutionary time that followed the Dark Ages of Europe, changed the world forever by placing importance on the individual and on creativity.
SAI recognizes that a well-rounded study abroad experience includes learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By providing a strong Student Services program, our staff aims to support students in their personal growth through daily cultural interactions both in Florence and as they travel beyond.
The program’s location in the historic center of Florence offers students the opportunity to live in the heart of the Renaissance while experiencing the modern, thriving city of today. The streets of Florence still ring with the vibrant culture that began over 600 years ago; the center has changed little, combining the elegance and quality of the Renaissance style with a stunning blend of modern design. It is an immensely fun city, filled with people from all parts of the world. The lush hills and mountains of Tuscany surround the city, offering themselves for exploration on afternoons or weekends. Though Florence has a rich history, today it is an important center for contemporary art, fashion design, graphics and business. We invite you to experience this contrast of past and present with other students from around the world that come to study in Florence.
www.saiprograms.com
At the beginning of each term, students participate in an orientation during which they are given general information, school policies, a profile of Italian culture, a guided walking tour of the city and school premises, an Italian language placement test and a final course registration. You will meet your advisors at orientation, and they will be available to assist you with any academic or personal issues that may arise throughout the term. Advisors also plan frequent social events for students, ranging from restaurant dinners of regional cuisine to the wildly popular local soccer matches.
Volunteering Student Services also offers students the opportunity to join the community of Florence through a socially relevant experience of volunteering. Students have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of Florentine associations that work in the social or cultural field such as museums, canteens, churches, the British Institute Library, Florence International Theatre Company (FITC), St. James Church etc. Volunteering in Florence is a wonderful option for all those students who want to be actively involved in the everyday life of the city. It is also a very enriching and rewarding experience. Please see our Florence website for details on volunteer opportunities through SAI.
Internships In today’s global workplace, students can gain invaluable professional experience by participating in international internships. SAI offers internships to all students for both credit and non-credit. See page 6 for more information. Examples: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Host School
semester programs
As an urban school, Florence University of the Arts (FUA) is comprised of several buildings; Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, Palazzo Doni, Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo and Villa Brilli Peri.
Free Elective
The school’s main building, Palazzo Doni, is located steps away from the Santa Croce Church (Basilica di Santa Croce). This Renaissance building was once owned by the Doni family, patrons of Michelangelo. The classroom named “Aula Michelangelo” was once the Doni family master bedroom, where Michelangelo’s commissioned work was displayed.
12 – 15 credits (4 or 5 courses) chosen from all semester courses.
The Free Elective Program provides students with the greatest flexibility to choose freely from course offerings and select courses based on academic needs and career interests. These courses fulfill a combination of major, minor, and elective credits for the student, based on academic approval from their home institution.
Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, located across the street from Palazzo Doni, hosts many classrooms as well as an advanced photography studio, including professional dark room. Palazzo Strozzi is also the location of the Palestra (the gym) that all FUA students may use. Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo accommodates the Italian language and Italian literature departments of Florence University of the Arts. In addition, Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo hosts regular events, including afternoon lectures and a film series, as well as special evening events such as book launches, lectures, discussion groups and conferences. Villa Brilli Peri houses most of the food and wine studies. This palazzo hosts classes in the professional kitchens and, specially designed Wine Appreciation teaching classroom. Although these buildings hold historical meaning in Florence, with extensive remodeling, contemporary Italian interior design can be found within all of them. The palazzi are large and provide an ideal setting for the studios, classrooms, administrative offices, internet facilities and library located within.
Academic Programs At FUA, SAI offers a wide range of courses, with current interests and contemporary subjects in mind. Along with specialized courses, such as fashion, jewelry, interior design and industrial design, FUA also has a large selection of liberal arts, science, business and economics courses. For a complete course schedule, please visit: www.saiprograms.com/florence. All courses are taught in English, with the exception of Italian language and those courses clearly indicated as taught in Italian. Although there is no prior language requirement, all semester students must take Italian language as a part of their program.

Living in Florence and being part of the Italian community, all contributed to the comprehensiveness of the Apicius Wine Program. The fact that all the professors have active careers in the wine industry enabled us to have exclusive access to wineries, tours, and tastings which was simply priceless – this is hard to find anywhere else and seems especially unique to the program. Student Life
It has been said that more than a lifetime is needed to experience all that the city of Rome has to offer. It is a city layered with art and antiquities encompassing 2,500 years of history — from the Coliseum, the Imperial Forum, and the Roman Pantheon, to Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museum. The city of Rome is home to over five million people and is a global center of business, diplomacy, religion, film, art, and fashion.
SAI students participate in an orientation program, which provides information on the school and its policies, the city of Rome, and what to expect while living abroad. By the end of orientation, students will have a good understanding of how to find their classes, buy supplies and groceries, and move about independently in the city. Students have many opportunities to adventure beyond the city of Rome. You may join the regular excursions organized by SAI, or you may choose to travel on your own. An efficient rail system allows easy access to places of interest and many low cost airlines offer convenient travel to other European cities.
In Rome, SAI offers two distinct program options; John Cabot University and Italiaidea Institute.
Students are offered a variety of co-curricular activities both on and off campus. Students may become active Student Council members, or participate on the debate team. Intramural soccer, basketball and volleyball are available, as well as swimming at a nearby pool. Several gyms are available in Trastevere, within easy walking distance of the campus. Films are shown at JCU every week through the cinema club, and the university’s theater group stages a major dramatic or musical production twice a year. Program Coordinators are all great! They are incredibly helpful and willing to answer questions. It has been such a relief to have that form of support here. ~ Fall student

Since 1972, John Cabot University (JCU) has provided an exceptional academic and cultural opportunity for students - the chance to obtain an American university education in the heart of the international city of Rome. All classes at John Cabot are taught in English and there is no Italian language requirement. In an increasingly complex and inter-related world, an education with a global perspective is essential. JCU students encounter a rigorous liberal arts curriculum amidst centuries of art and architecture, in the center of one of the world’s great modern cities. John Cabot University maintains two campuses in Rome, each with its own personality. Walk through the Porta Settimiana (built in the third century) and you will find JCU’s Frank J. Guarini Campus. Located on the grounds of the Accademia dei Lincei, the National Science Academy, where Galileo was a member, this historic building takes full advantage of Rome’s mild climate, opening onto patios, terraces and a spacious “Lemon Tree” courtyard surrounded by bougainvillea. Students regularly congregate in these open spaces and terraces to study and socialize. In addition to classrooms, the Guarini Campus houses the Aula Magna Regina auditorium, which hosts lectures, concerts, plays and films; the Frohring Library, with its study rooms, multimedia lab and media room; as well as JCU administrative offices.

Everything’s just a stone’s throw away from Italiaidea: Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline, the Parliament and the Governmental Palace, Piazza del Popolo and Via del Corso. You will encounter a richness of sites, making it difficult to choose how to spend your free time. You will discover that Rome is an open-air theater which never ceases to amaze. It is an incredible city which enchants all with its great panoramas, piazzas, buildings, churches, ruins and museums; a great world capital which continues to maintain an authentic and traditional atmosphere in the peace of its small streets and its splendid piazzas bursting with people and life. “Rome is the great mother”, Fellini said, “who accepts all and where all find what they are looking for: art, cuisine, religion, cinema, nightlife or the peace of a boat-trip on the river, the boutiques of the major Italian designers or the small artisan workshops”.
JCU’s Tiber Campus, located on the banks of Rome’s famous Tiber river and a five-minute walk from Guarini, is a spacious, state-ofthe-art large building with smart classrooms, a student lounge and JCU offices such as Student Services and Counseling. Designed by the Italian modernist architect Angelo di Castro in 1958, it was completely renovated to accommodate 21st-century learning styles and technologies, while maintaining the architectural integrity of this former elementary school. Both John Cabot University campuses are wireless and set up to encourage dialogue and collaboration among the international student population. Student Clubs • Multicultural Club: This club celebrates the diversity of all students at JCU and organizes cultural events based on various ethnicities and cultures. • Student Government – at least one visiting student is required to be part of the voting body giving visiting students a voice at JCU • The Matthew (The JCU student newspaper): The mission of this club is to provide news about the university and the city of Rome, to inspire students to explore their surroundings and to encourage the achievement of excellence. • The Environmental Club • S.T.A.N.D. SAI Global Leaders Certificate The SAI Global Leaders Certificate, offered at our Rome program, is designed to enrich students’ experiences while studying abroad and to acknowledge their academic and service work by providing an additional credential beyond a university transcript. The city of Rome offers students unique opportunities to link classroom learning to real world experiences, while living and studying in a dynamic international capital city. The Global Leaders Certificate is based on the premise that students engaged in their own communities and abroad have increased opportunities to develop leadership skills that contribute to academic and career success. While in Rome, students will gain awareness of leadership strategies that can be applied in local and global contexts. Students will broaden their awareness of global issues and deepen their knowledge of the local host community’s role in an increasingly interconnected world through exploration of research, engagement in community services and interaction with experts and leaders. Mentoring and structured reflection are integrated into the Certificate Program. SAI coordinators in Rome serve as mentors and meet regularly with students to discuss their progress and perspectives on their individual and group experiences.
Institute In International Communication Each Summer II session JCU brings together students and faculty from around the world to study communication in Rome. As a JCU Institute participant you will be invited to special events and networking dinners and will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion of your summer courses. The City Nestled in rolling hills in the heart of Tuscany, just 70 miles south of Florence, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. As an important money-lending center, Siena prospered as a city-state. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. One can wander through tucked-away squares and tour museums and churches that are home to countless renowned works of Byzantine, Renaissance and High Renaissance art. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is a major attraction and is also a bustling university town. One of the oldest in Europe, the University of Siena was founded in 1240 and currently enrolls more than 20,000 students. The city offers exciting sporting and cultural events year round, including one of the top basketball teams in Europe, as well as the AC Siena soccer team and many theatrical events and a series of concerts sponsored by the famous Chigiana Musical Academy and the Siena Jazz Summer Festival. Siena truly is an amazing place to do your study abroad experience. There is such an incredible amount of culture and history within the winding roads and surrounding walls that, after just a few months here, it will feel like your home away from home. ~ Summer student
www.saiprograms.com
Siena is perhaps most famous for the heart stopping horse race, Il Palio. This spectacular event takes place twice each summer in the central square of the city and has roots that can be traced back centuries. The exhilarating bareback race pits each of the city’s 17 neighborhoods, or contrade, against one another and is not to be missed – the victorious neighborhood celebrates for an entire year!
In many courses, learning is not limited to the classroom. Whenever possible, Siena Italian Studies integrates field excursions and visits to enhance comprehension and provide students with a multifaceted experience. For example, art history courses naturally include visits to museums, churches and sites of artistic relevance in Siena, Florence and other towns in the region so that students can see first-hand the masterpieces discussed in class.
Each semester program includes a 4-day group excursion to a chosen location. This excursion follows the Intensive Italian Course (the first 3 weeks of the semester) and includes some relaxation time as well as visits to culturally significant sites. Several half-day and full-day excursions give students a wide-ranging and meaningful experience of Tuscany (and other regions of Italy) of the sort tourists rarely have. We walk through the Tuscan countryside from one unspoiled small town to the next, passing along ancient Roman byways and through woods where locals hunt for mushrooms and gather herbs; visit farms that produce wine, olive oil and pecorino cheese; relax in one of the region’s many natural hot springs; experience traditional Tuscan festivals such as Carnevale in Foiano della Chiana. Each term also includes a visit to Florence and the Uffizi Gallery, as well as an Italian Opera in Florence or Rome and a day trip hiking along the Tuscan coast to an unspoiled beach in the Maremma Region of Tuscany.
Cultural Anthropology students may attend traditional local festivals and visit museums dedicated to aspects of Tuscan folk culture; students studying Italian Costume will have the opportunity to visit museums dedicated to textiles, costumes and individual Italian designers in the Florence/Prato area, while students studying the History of Italian Cuisine might visit a local cheese making farm and attend a hands-on cooking lesson, and the list goes on.

Host School Siena Italian Studies (SIS) is a study abroad program based at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange in Siena, Italy. SIS programs are a ‘gentle full-immersion’ in Italian life for highly motivated beginners, intermediate and advanced Italian language students. SIS offers some of the most innovative programs in Italy that work to fully integrate the education of language, culture and service-learning, in and out of the classroom. Classes are taught using an instructional approach developed over the years, known as FICCS (Full-Immersion: Culture, Content, & Service). Using this approach, which combines guided and spontaneous learning acquisition, students are asked to employ new language skills both in the classroom and in service situations, giving them a learning experience like no other. SIS programs are intended for students with a wide range of motivations for studying abroad. From acquiring a mastery of the Italian language, to using a local Renaissance chapel as your art history classroom, or working alongside the city’s volunteer medical assistance team, Siena Italian Studies provides you with the means to create an unforgettable experience abroad. All students are housed in family board accommodations, encouraging use of your new language skills and deepening your interaction with Italian families and culture.
Internships There are several internship placements available for interested students. These unpaid internships allow students to observe and participate in the day-to-day activities of several local businesses, organizations and structures. Internship students will participate in weekly on-site activities, as well as complete related coursework during the semester and a final reflective paper about a relevant aspect of the internship experience. Internships can be taken for or without academic credit. Some internship placements require students to take ‘Business and Legislative Italian’ course, in order to receive internship credit (3 credits per term/internship). EXAMPLES OF INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES • Cooking School Internship • City Library “Biblioteca degli Intronati” • Import-Export Firm • Adult English/Spanish Language Program • Community Service Health Organization • City Hospital • Siena Italian Studies Office

Students might set tables at the city soup kitchen, visit with the elderly at a nursing home, teach English to local elementary school children or volunteer on the city ambulance. Volunteering in the community is an unparalleled way to improve language skills, get involved in the local social fabric and make a genuine contribution to the host community. SAI students attending the program at SIS receive U.S. transferable credits from Portland State University. At SIS, SAI offers semester, year and summer programs.
ART HISTORY
Language and culture make up an inseparable binomial; who can really say whether it’s culture that generates language, or language that generates culture? This is the basis of Siena Italian Studies’ version of Full-Immersion: Culture, Content and Service (FICCS). For SIS, full-immersion is not a form of ‘torture’ or trial-by-fire in which only those who can quickly overcome language barriers survive; on the contrary, it’s a gradual and unforced process of discovering a new culture through continuous and constant exchanges with locals, a coming to awareness of the multiple linguistic and cultural capacities around us and within us.
ITALIAN HISTORY
The overall objective of full-immersion at SIS is for each student to begin to recognize and activate these capacities, and to develop a reflective intercultural competence, which will allow him or her to function as a global citizen capable of facing and interacting with different cultures throughout the course of his/her lifetime with awareness and sensitivity.
semester programs All semester students are enrolled in a three-week Intensive Italian Language course (3 credits) during the first month of the program. Following the Intensive Italian Language Course, the group takes a break with a 4-day excursion to a selected destination. Following the group excursion, the standard semester begins. During the semester students take one Italian Language course (6 credits) along with 2-3 electives from the course offerings for a total of 15-18 credits. Please note: Final course selections will be made following the course introduction sessions given at the start of the term.
Summer programs Summer students take a combination of Italian Language and elective courses. Programs range from four to eight weeks for a total of 6 to 12 U.S. credits.

Students studying design in Milan will enjoy daily life in a dynamic, modern, international city. Milan (Milano in Italian), the “second city of Italy,” located on the plains of the northern province of Lombardy surrounded by an arc of mountains and lakes, is a world-renowned, international center for fashion, design, finance, industry, and calcio (soccer, as Americans call it). It has great museums, a huge castle, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals on earth, and one of the world’s most famous paintings (Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper). The circuit of annual fashion shows, design fairs and exhibitions in the city attracts many international visitors and celebrities. Despite its workorientated persona as Italy’s economic powerhouse, Milan has many hidden gems: apart from the discount designer outlet stores, you’ll have time to discover the Italian dolce vita (sweet life) in the many outdoor cafés around the city.

BUSINESS DESIGN
This MA intends to create a new managerial class for design driven companies composed of individuals able to combine creativity, managerial skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Its goal is to provide tools to tackle complex social conditions, globalization and the spread of new economic production systems. CAR DESIGN
This MA follows the approach of “learning by designing”, where participants learn by direct, active involvement in several design experiences. This program aims at strengthening participants’ design competencies together with the development of their professional profile. At the end of the program, students will be ready to work as car designers, within the framework of a company or a design studio, and they will be able to effectively interact with the marketing, production and finance functions.
DA Master’s Programs Domus Academy offers thirteen 12-month Master’s Programs, all taught in English. Interested applicants should contact our California office for more details. This MA focuses on everything concerning people and clothing; leather goods and jewels often become creations as important as the dress that they complement. In collaboration with Ars Sutoria, the most prestigious institute of technical specialization in leather goods, participants will explore the accessories field with an innovative approach, in order to acquire an all-around and advanced knowledge of the industry.

FASHION DESIGN
This MA has been developed according to the evolution of a system increasingly searching for professionals who possess interdisciplinary skills, creativity and ability to manage a project from production, through communication up to distribution. This is a training program designed to contribute to the development of professional figures able to successfully express their creative sensibility and properly face the new challenges coming into the Fashion World. FASHION MANAGEMENT
This Master’s program aims at shaping and developing the next generation of managers suited to the specific requirements of Fashion. The program aims at creating different profiles in Fashion: from product to brand, distribution and communication. Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising
In a competitive market, where visual communication plays a key role in the success of companies, this program aims at providing participants with the tools and competencies for the new profession of the Visual Fashion Brand Communicator. This strategic figure will be able to create, through photographic shots, the “fashion message” making the products appealing and so giving an added value to the creativity of designers. He/She will be the aesthetic coordinator of the point of sale, where the brand values will be highlighted by researching the most effective way to reach the reference target market.
SAI
INTERACTION DESIGN
This Master’s program aims at providing students and designers with practical and conceptual skills to carry out a “problem setting” activity, using their imagination to develop concepts, scenarios and strategies based on the integration of ICT in everyday life, blending design and creative sensitivity with more technical and market-oriented competence.
73
This Master’s program will enable students to upgrade their design competencies combining new needs of sustainability with functional aspects of contemporary lifestyle. This program is a training program of excellence, able to reflect on the changes and transformations of the built space, promoting a permanent research activity for design models and solutions that are appropriate and innovative. MARKETING OF LUXURY GOODS
Today´s luxury professionals require a deep knowledge of the contemporary world and of the complexity of the luxury market. They are also requested to have the flexibility to adapt their skills in a constantly changing scenario and in several different fields. The Master Program in Marketing of Luxury Goods is designed to give students a leading edge in the highly competitive fields of High Fashion, Jewelry, Luxury Beverages & Spirits, Luxury Hotels and SPAs, Automotive (Cars and Yachts), Cosmetics and Perfumes, etc. combining marketing and business management skills. PRODUCT DESIGN
DA’s historical flagship Master’s program has given birth to more than a generation of designers. The program aims at developing professionals with specific skills, willing to play an active role while proposing new intuition, aesthetic vision and cultural values. This program is offered in collaboration with: Canon, Casio, Dainese, Honda, Ikea, Louis Vitton, Mandarina Duck, Mitsubishi Electronics, Nokia, and Samsung. SERVICE and experience DESIGN
Service design is a relatively recent interdisciplinary field that emphasizes the centrality of users and the user experience in service management and innovation. The Master’s program focuses on consumer services (B2C): from hospitality and tourism, to financial and commercial services, to healthcare and public services.
Visual brand design
The concept of branding is moving away from the traditional idea of creating an “image” to represent the name and the values of a company, by exploring a broader view, that incorporates several disciplines, from visual design to sound design, from storytelling to consumers’ psychology and marketing techniques, thus addressing a strongly integrated approach whose aim is to identify the core assets and to orchestrate them into a consistent brand identity. Branding is now much more than the definition of a visual image: it’s the creation of a rich and attractive environment, to catch the consumer’s attention and bring him into the brand world, to share the brand values and to become an informal sponsor of the brand. The Master in Visual Brand Design is a unique opportunity to acquire hands-on competencies and in-depth knowledge on how to design the identity of a company and/or organization, by integrating graphic design skills with strategic thinking. London is an extraordinary city, full of art and culture, while also being one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. With the efficient subway (or “tube”) it is easy to traverse, while sites on the European continent are an easy weekend trip away.
During the first three days after arrival, the SAI Program Coordinator organizes a series of meetings and events designed to provide students with a thorough orientation of the city and surrounding area, along with a full explanation of the academic program and program policies. By the end of orientation, students will have a clear understanding of their new environment and will feel confident moving about the city independently.
London life and exciting cultural institutions are an important part of the learning environment for students. The school’s main central London buildings are within walking distance of the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Britain and only a short underground or bus ride away from the Tate Modern. Because London is so cosmopolitan students will get to know people from around the world without struggling through a second language.

Semester Programs UAL faculty are practicing artists, designers and communications professors who have an outstanding reputation for their level of teaching, which has been officially recognized by the Quality Assurance Agency, the UK’s quality watchdog for Higher Education. Semester Students have the option of enrolling in subject specific programs or free elective programs, while summer students have the option of a several 3 – 8 week programs. SUBJECT INTENSIVE PROGRAMS (SIP)
Study abroad students enrolled in an SIP program are fully integrated into the degree courses and study alongside UK degree seeking students. Since the study of art and design is different in Europe, students will find they are working more independently than at their home schools. In addition, students are encouraged to take a hands-on, project oriented approach to learning. Professors offer guidance and support to visiting students in order to help them fit seamlessly into their program of choice. Students will earn 15 U.S. credits per semester. Each subjectspecific semester program at UAL is designed with the goal of maximizing the student experience; both in terms of providing a framework for academic inquiry, as well as offering each student the opportunity to work under the mentorship of leading industry professionals. Upon acceptance, students will be placed for the semester, in either Year 1 or 2 courses of the program, depending on the student’s portfolio. ELECTIVE PROGRAMS
Students wanting a diverse course curriculum may choose to enroll in the Free Elective Program, which allows greater latitude in course selection. Each program consists of a set curriculum with the chance to choose from several elective courses for a total of 18 credits. Courses are offered in Fine Art, Fashion, Graphic and Interior Design. Please see Course List on page 80 for complete list of courses within each program.

HONORS PROGRAM
ROME
Honors Program in Rome The SAI Honors Program allows academically talented students to satisfy their intellectual and cultural curiosities and earn additional credentials for studying abroad. The honors program helps students to distinguish their work, and boost resumes while offering innovative alternatives to the traditional study abroad experience. SAI Honors students gain additional recognition for their work that acknowledges their commitment to academic achievement, creativity and community engagement. The SAI Honors Program in Rome is designed to amplify the academic experience abroad by offering students unique opportunities to link classroom learning to real world experience, while living and studying in Rome, a dynamic international global center. The Honors Program is based on the premise that students go above and beyond the classroom. Students enroll as full time students at SAI’s John Cabot University (JCU) program that includes at least one JCU honors course. Honors courses are designated as such because students complete additional assignments (e.g., research papers or portfolios, attendance at interdisciplinary honors lectures), and delve more deeply into the subject. These additional assignments are graded on a “grant of Honors credit/no grant of Honors credit” basis and are not calculated into the final grade for the course. For the granting of Honors credit, JCU requires that students produce work of a

quality that would receive a B (3.00/4.00) or higher and this will be noted on their transcripts. Students taking a course as an Honors Course also enjoy additional mentoring from their JCU instructor. In addition to the JCU honors course, students work with the SAI honors coordinator and participate in activities arranged by SAI, such as community services and scholarly seminars. During application to SAI, students work with SAI admissions counselors to select appropriate courses. Mentoring and structured reflection are integrated into the honors program prior to departure and while in Rome, where the SAI honors coordinator meets regularly with students to discuss their projects and activities. Prerequisites Minimum 3.5 GPA and/or enrollment in home school’s honors program.
How to Apply Students should submit the following: a résumé, 2 letters of recommendation, 1 personal essay on your goals for advanced study in Italy (max. 2 pages), phone interview with SAI honors program coordinator. When applying to SAI, students must indicate the Honors Program on their application to the Rome program. Students will work with the SAI Admissions Counselor to choose their courses, including the honors course(s). For successful completion of the Honors Program, students will: 1. Enroll in a minimum of one JCU honors course 2. Engage in community service during the semester for a minimum of 20 hours 3. Maintain a journal of their activities, observations and reflections on their study abroad experiences in Italy 4. Submit a copy of the honors course final paper/ project to SAI 5. Earn a B or better in the designated honors course(s) 6. Within 60 days of semester’s end, submit to SAI a 250 word reflection essay that relates to their honors course topics and their learning and cultural experiences in Rome 7. Upon successful completion, students will receive a reference letter that confirms completion of the honors program and related activities in Italy, along with a certificate suitable for framing.

Participating Universities & Colleges SAI accepts students from ALL schools, including those not directly affiliated with SAI. An affiliation with your school is not required. However, SAI has formal Affiliation Agreements with many universities and colleges in the U.S. and other countries. Students enrolling from one of our affiliated schools receive a variety of benefits, such as fee reductions. Affiliated students should discuss their plans to attend an SAI program with the study abroad office at their home school. Affiliated schools guarantee their students will receive credit for courses from their home institution and will also assist in the procedure to use financial aid to study abroad. It is important that you meet with your study abroad advisor to determine how program fees are paid. Some schools require students to pay all fees directly to SAI; others require students to pay their home institution fees and the school will cover the cost of the study abroad
program; still others will require students to pay certain fees and their home institution will pay others. Be sure to discuss this with your study abroad advisor in order to be clear about the procedure your college or university follows in its affiliation with SAI. Students are responsible for verifying transfer credit before beginning their program. While affiliated schools guarantee credit, this does not guarantee every course will transfer, or that it will transfer to your major area of study. You will want to meet with your advisor for a final determination. Students from affiliated universities and colleges must enroll through their study abroad office in order to be certain they will benefit from the affiliation in place. If you are uncertain about your college or university’s affiliation with SAI, drop by your school’s study abroad office and discuss it with an advisor or contact the SAI office directly.
