Benvenuto Bienvenida Bienvenue Welcome This page: SAI 2015 Photo contest winner Jennifer M. “At sunset, Florence paints a sky that artists only dream of. It captures your attention as you get lost in the beauty of the deep yellow, orange, and blues and for a moment, time seems to slow down.” Cover Photo: SAI 2015 Photo contest nominee Katelyn F. “This picture was taken at carnival where the confetti brought out everyone’s inner child.”

Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues, I still vividly recall the first time I landed in a foreign country as a young person. My senses felt overloaded; everything was utterly different. And my world changed. The impact of study abroad on a young person’s life is immeasurable. Years later, while living in Italy with my family for 8 years and working in the field of international education, it was part of my job to know the college study opportunities available in Europe to English speaking students. I also learned to determine the truly exceptional schools, ones that would be an outstanding experience for any student. Back then my work was with secondary students, high school students living abroad and choosing a college soon, some even staying in Italy. Once my family and I returned to the U.S. my interest in education abroad focused on options for college students and it was evident at that time that opportunities were limited and difficult to reach. As a result, in 1995, I began to build SAI, with the goal of making it possible for all students to experience study abroad, especially at these exceptional schools I’d come to know. • In 2015 SAI celebrated 20 years of service. SAI Programs’ hands-on approach has enabled us to serve our students with the finest study abroad programs in Europe. Our students understand that SAI is an organization known for providing programs and services of distinguishing quality and always with a personal touch. • As President, I am committed to maintaining SAI as a small, personalized organization with staff who care for students and respond to their academic interests, cultural curiosities and career goals. As an intentionally small organization we are able to help each individual student feel comfortable in a new cultural environment. And as a small organization we pay attention to the smallest details, allowing students the greatest access to learning and cultural exposure. • SAI Programs is dedicated to introducing students to opportunities that encourage creative interaction across disciplines: communication, science, technology, art and design, economics and social sciences. In this way we seek to help students develop both the breadth and depth of creative thinking, cultural knowledge and professional skills, so when they return from their experiences abroad they have a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. We believe this will provide an advantage to them in their chosen careers and for the rest of their lives.

I invite you to learn more about SAI Programs by visiting our web site: saiprograms.com. Michael Cruciano, President

SAIPROGRAMS About SAI Since 1995, SAI has provided students with an exceptional cultural and educational experience abroad, offering the opportunity to enroll in some of the finest schools available to English speaking students in Europe. With programs in London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Florence, Milan, Sorrento, and Siena, students will find nearly all areas of study; from business to design; art history to environmental studies; studio arts to political science and more. Our programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to know their host city and country on a deep level: its history, culture, geography, food, art and people. The combination of world-class academic coursework and the cultural treasure of each host country offers students personal, academic and professional growth as well as a lifetime of memories.

Today’s increasing globalization places new demands on students as decision-makers, and for this reason many undergraduate programs require study abroad. It is critical for today’s student to understand the interconnection of world affairs and to experience, through living abroad, cultural difference and diversity. Educational institutions must prepare today’s student to face a world made smaller by rapid communication, shared commerce and the facility of travel from one place to another. By discussing issues and making friends from around the world, students begin to see themselves and their homeland from a global perspective. Study abroad students undertake an unforgettable personal journey and SAI is there every step of the way to enhance the experience and encourage our students.

At SAI we are committed to exposing students to education abroad opportunities that encourage creative interaction across disciplines. This interaction of creativity and innovation is especially visible in cities noted for art, culture and design. SAI establishes programs in these dynamic “smart” cities that inspire personal creativity and success in students. This is part of the mission that guides SAI, as well as our decision that SAI will always remain small enough to nurture and maintain the personal hands-on care that is primary to our mission in all SAI experiences.

Why SAI?

Our vision is to provide superior academic, living, social and cultural experiences that allow students to enjoy their time abroad, while nurturing their talents and challenging their minds. Students experience a blended educational and cultural environment that stresses academic integrity, high impact learning, leadership development and global awareness. The result is uniquely enhanced knowledge and skills for students preparing to enter the working world, pursuing graduate school, or seeking professional development. • Courses are taught in English with some options available in the host language • Undergraduate program cost includes accommodation in studentshared apartments, with homestays available in some locations • Students receive U.S. university credit for all undergraduate SAI courses • Students from any school, affiliated or non-affiliated, can attend SAI Programs • Students from any nation can attend SAI Programs

Studying abroad is humbling. Especially being in an environment where you do not fluently speak the language, being abroad grounds you in an inexplicable way. Having to adjust your mannerisms, language, tone, and clothing to fit with local customs is an exciting experience. ~ Paris Student, Fall 2015

SAIPROGRAMS U.S. Credit Students receive official U.S. transcripts for all undergraduate coursework taken at SAI programs, either directly through the host school or SAI’s U.S. school of record. Transcripts are sent to each student’s home school at the completion of the program. Students should work with their home school to determine how the credits they complete abroad will transfer back.

Internships Internships are an excellent way to extend learning beyond the classroom, explore career options, and build professional networks. Internships allow students to develop or improve language skills and gain real world experience in professional environments. SAI offers part time, credit and non-credit internship opportunities in many of our programs, both in the semester and summer. Internship opportunities are of varying lengths to suit any student’s desire to gain professional experience abroad.

Community and Cultural Integration As a result of our strong ties to the local communities, SAI offers a variety of high impact service activities that help students gain a meaningful global perspective while making a difference in the world. These service learning, volunteer programs and community-based research projects allow students to have a positive impact on the host communities that welcome them, as well as help students explore their cultural identities. Students engaged in the community examine real-life problems and collaborate with local residents to address community needs. Examples of community activities available to SAI students include working with local immigration officials, teaching English and computer skills, serving the elderly community, participating with local medical emergency teams, or providing services to youth. Often, students are transformed from the service experiences and discover a new sense of their own identities and their roles as global citizens.

Leadership At SAI, we seek to give students ample opportunities to foster a global outlook and a leadership mentality. We believe that study abroad alumni can become leaders in their communities and future fields, as they carry their academic and cultural experiences into their futures. We foster students’ leadership potential by offering a unique Global Leadership Certificate program as a part of some semester programs. Students in this SAI Certificate Program broaden their awareness of global issues and deepen their knowledge of the local host community’s role in an increasingly interconnected world through exploration of research, engagement in community services and interaction with experts and leaders.

Professional and Graduate Level Opportunities On top of our wealth of undergraduate program options, SAI also offers opportunities for graduate and career-level students to refine their passions through international coursework. We offer Career Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas, and one and two year Master’s Degrees in a range of disciplines, including design, fashion, culinary arts, and publishing. Professionals are also able to enroll in our intensive 3 or 4 week Summer language programs in Rome, Barcelona and Paris.

SAIPROGRAMS Advising and Orientation SAI admissions counselors and on-site staff provide continuous advising to students during their application and course registration steps, as well as throughout their coursework. SAI admissions counselors are knowledgeable about the programs, courses, cities and countries where host schools are located and have extensive experience in helping students transition from their home school to their choice of programs abroad. Admissions counselors provide course descriptions, syllabi, and general feedback on courses to ensure that students register for the courses that will properly transfer to their home institutions. This support continues as students depart for their study abroad host country. SAI on-site staff greet students at the airport and provide transportation to students’ program and housing check-in. Programs begin with an orientation that covers local customs, housing details, safety information, SAI regulations, and introduces students to the rich calendar of activities provided as a supplement to academics. Throughout the term, SAI on-site staff hold daily office hours and are available to offer assistance with personal issues that are common when studying abroad as well as academic problems that may arise. Halfway through the term the on-site staff holds an SAI Reorientation, which is a structured time to reflect on goals, discuss any challenges, and ensure that all students feel comfortable and safe in their programs.

Student Visa Advising Student visa application and requirements can sometimes contribute to a great deal of stress for study abroad students. For this reason, SAI has a dedicated visa office to assist students throughout their visa process. Our visa office is available to answer any questions and concerns, and provides students with simple step-by-step guides to complete their applications. In some instances, our visa office is able to process student applications directly to simplify the process further. SAIPROGRAMS Student Housing

Learning to live in a new environment is an important part of the study abroad experience. SAI recognizes the importance of safe and comfortable living spaces that help students make new friends and build community. Over our twenty years of operation, we have earned an excellent reputation for providing housing for students in beautiful apartments, as well as homestays in some locations. Student Shared Apartments SAI student apartments are located in buildings and areas shared by local residents throughout the host cities. This grants students exposure to everyday life in that city: shopping at local markets, enjoying a morning coffee at the neighborhood cafe, and establishing relationships with other locals in the building or around the neighborhood. SAI apartments are within a 45 minute walk or commute to school, with most within 30 minutes. Each SAI apartment accommodates between 2 and 8 students and is unique in size, age, floor plan, and number of bedrooms. SAI offers shared and private bedrooms and all apartments are clean and well equipped with basic furnishings, a kitchen, living area and bathroom. A washing machine, kitchen supplies, bedding and linens are provided. SAI staff are on hand to help orient students to their new apartments, and they remain available throughout the term to answer questions and assist with maintenance needs that may arise. Students seeking further assistance with cleaning can elect to pay for Premium Service (in eligible cities), which provides weekly cleaning, laundry service, and bi-weekly linen change. Homestays Homestays are available in Sorrento, Siena, Florence, Rome and Paris, and are a terrific way to ensure that language skills and cultural knowledge grow. Homestay families are thoroughly screened and are accustomed to welcoming visiting students into their homes. Homestays provide a shared or single bedroom in the family home with basic furnishings. Meals included vary by city. In Sorrento, homestay locations are near the school, while in other cities homestays may be outside of the city center and require a commute to reach school.

My apartment is a quaint 2 bedroom on top of a four story building, with exposed beams, a small tower for reading, and a fantastic patio. I am able to cook, sleep and live like an Italian and I am elated to have the opportunity to learn about the culture through experience. ~ Florence Student, Spring 2015 10

The City

Events and Excursions

The beauty and wealth of Florence has attracted every society, from Roman times to the present. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is its Renaissance art and architecture, which have contributed to its frequent naming as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Considered the birthplace of the Renaissance that blossomed from 1400 – 1600, Florence’s streets present a stunning reflection of the birth and development of modern society, which shifted importance toward the individual and creativity. Florence’s city center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still rings with the vibrant culture that began over 600 years ago. Today it is a combination of the elegance and quality of Renaissance style with a stunning blend of modern design.

For activities during a specific term see our website

Florence is an immensely fun city, filled with people from all parts of the world. The lush hills and mountains of Tuscany surround the city, offering themselves for exploration on afternoons or weekends. Though Florence has a rich history, today it is an important center for contemporary art, fashion design, graphics and business.

Student Life Students in Florence have the opportunity to live in the heart of the Renaissance while experiencing the modern, thriving city of today. Every corner of the city breathes a history that cannot be taken for granted, even after months of living in it. Studying among global treasures such as Michelangelo’s David, the iconic Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery, the most visited art museum in Italy, is both creatively inspiring and humbling. Florence is a very manageable city for students, with a smalltown feel juxtaposed with a thriving economy and bustling tourism. Students can easily go between small piazzas away from it all and the lively pedestrian-only center of the city where live music and street side vendors abound. Florence’s streets are lined with the enticing scents of Tuscan food, and students have easy access to the surrounding regions to enjoy world-renowned wines, cheeses and cuisine.

Volunteering Students can choose to volunteer in a variety of Florentine associations that work in the social or cultural fields such as museums, schools, the British Institute Library, Florence International Theatre Company (FITC), St. James Church, and many more. Volunteering in Florence is a wonderful option for those students who want to be actively involved in the everyday life of the city.

“I loved how in the wine program, we were so fully immersed in the world of wine. Living in Florence and being part of the Italian community, all contributed to the comprehensiveness of the Apicius Wine Program. The fact that all the professors have active careers in the wine industry enabled us to have exclusive access to wineries, tours, and tastings which was simply priceless – this is hard to find anywhere else and seems especially unique to the program. The Program really represented what it is like to work in the industry and allowed me to picture myself in the field.” ~ Apicius Student, Fall 2014

ROME

The City

Events and Excursions

It has been said that more than a lifetime is needed to experience all that the capital city of Rome has to offer. It is a city layered with art and antiquities encompassing 2,500 years of history – from the Coliseum, the Imperial Forum and the Roman Pantheon, to Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museums.

For activities during a specific term see our website

The city of Rome is a global center of business, diplomacy, religion, film, art, and fashion. Since its legendary founding in 753 BCE Rome has been one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe and perhaps this is why it is often referred to as the “Eternal City”. It is regarded as a birthplace of Western civilization and wears its history for all to see, with its historic center designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While it is a major tourist destination, Rome maintains an authentic and traditional atmosphere in the peace of its small streets and the splendor of its piazzas bursting with people and life. Rome is surrounded by stunning landscapes, beaches, and mountains that are easily accessible for day or weekend trips outside of the bustling city. An efficient rail system and two main airports easily connect Rome’s residents to the rest of Italy and Europe.

Student Life Students in Rome are quickly swept up into the profound history of this enchanting city. Walking by St. Peter’s Cathedral in Vatican City, the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture, is a treat that never ceases to amaze. Lessons learned in coursework can be applied throughout daily life in Rome–whether art history, business, philosophy or language–from museums to volunteering to internships in leading global firms. Students make their homes in the unique, welcoming spaces of Rome’s neighborhoods, with local and authentic restaurants, cafes, and shops. Rome is packed full of beautiful spaces to relax, study or meet friends. Students in Rome can enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine in a beautiful park, savor a gelato on the Spanish Steps, or study art history overlooking the Trevi Fountain.

Volunteering SAI students in Rome interested in getting involved in the Roman community can do so through numerous organizations. Opportunities include volunteering at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, hospitals, and in English language school programs. SAI students receive information at orientation about all the opportunities that will be available during their term, and SAI staff can help to identify opportunities of specific interest to a student.

Semester Elective + Honors Program (12 – 17 credits) Students can supplement a regular semester of studies with the Honors Program, in which students enroll in at least one honors course and participate in additional community service and seminars to enhance their academic and cultural experience. Honors courses are designated as such because students complete additional assignments (e.g., research papers or portfolios, attendance at interdisciplinary honors lectures), and delve more deeply into the subject with the support of their instructor. These additional assignments are graded on a “grant of honors credit/no grant of honors credit” basis and are not calculated into the final grade for the course. Students must be awarded a B (3.00/4.00) or higher in their honors course(s) to be granted the credit, which is noted on the transcript. In addition to the JCU honors course, students work with the SAI honors coordinator and participate in activities arranged by SAI, such as community service and scholarly seminars, as well as produce a final reflection paper. Internship Opportunities Semester students with junior or senior class standing can apply for a part time credit or non-credit internship to be completed as part of their elective program. The selective internship program offers a wonderful opportunity for motivated students to pursue a major or minor field of study under the guidance of an internship supervisor. Former students have interned at the U.S. Embassy, Price Waterhouse Coopers Advisory, FAO, IDLO, IFAD, NATO, World Food Program, CNN, Vatican Radio, Sotheby’s Italy and many other companies.

The two Institutes allow passionate students to engage more deeply in their field of study, and gain access to leaders in their field. The Institutes offer additional activities on top of regular coursework that include seminars, special events, and networking dinners. Students who complete an Institute program receive a certificate in addition to their regular course transcript. Summer Institute I: Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation Since its founding in 2009, the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation has quickly become a thriving community of writers in Rome. The Institute’s reading series has featured such luminaries as Kim Addonizio, Marianne Boruch, Peter Campion, Kevin Craft, Eliza Griswold, Joseph Harrison, Jay Hopler, Kimberly Johnson, Richard Kenney, Brad Leithauser, Robert Polito, Mary Jo Salter, and Edmund White. Summer Writers in Residence have been Mark Strand and Simon Mawer (2010), Dorothy Allison and Marilyn Hacker (2011), and in Summer 2012 the Institute welcomed Billy Collins and Joyce Carol Oates. Summer Institute II: Institute in International Communication Each Summer II session JCU brings together students and faculty from around the world to study communication in Rome. Siena

SIENA The City Nestled in rolling hills in the heart of Tuscany, just 70 miles south of Florence, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. As an important moneylending center, Siena prospered as a city-state. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. One can wander through tuckedaway squares and tour museums and churches that are home to countless renowned works of Byzantine, Renaissance and High Renaissance art.

SAIITALY Events and Excursions For activities during a specific term see our website. • • • • • • • • •

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is a major attraction and is also a bustling university town. The city offers exciting sporting and cultural events year round, including one of the top basketball teams in Europe, as well as the AC Siena soccer team, many theatrical events, a series of concerts sponsored by the famous Chigiana Musical Academy and the Siena Jazz Summer Festival. Siena is perhaps most famous for the heart stopping horse race, Il Palio. This spectacular event takes place twice each summer in the central square of the city and has roots that can be traced back centuries. The exhilarating bareback race pits each of the city’s 17 neighborhoods, or contrade, against one another and is not to be missed – the victorious neighborhood celebrates for an entire year!

Student Life The historic center of Siena is magical, with narrow streets and fascinating shops. A major tourist destination, Siena maintains a small community feel through its historic traditions, delicious Tuscan food, and neighborhood loyalty. Students get to know Siena’s community through their homestay and language integration, and are quickly able to navigate the city easily by foot and transit. It is also easy to get out of the city, where a walk from town leads to the beautiful countryside and vineyards that students can hike and explore. Siena’s train station connects it easily to the rest of Italy and Europe, making weekend trips easy.

Volunteering Students in Siena have the opportunity to participate in numerous community volunteering activities. Options include setting tables at the city soup kitchen, visiting with the elderly at a nursing home, teaching English to local elementary school children or volunteering on the city ambulance. Volunteering in the community is an unparalleled way to improve language skills, get involved in the local social fabric and make a genuine contribution to the host community.

SISSIENA Host School Siena Italian Studies (SIS) is a study abroad program based at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange. SIS programs are a ‘gentle full-immersion’ in Italian life for highly motivated beginner, intermediate and advanced Italian language students. SIS offers some of the most innovative programs in Italy that work to fully integrate the education of language, culture and service learning, in and out of the classroom. Classes are taught using an instructional approach developed over the years, known as FICCS (Full-Immersion: Culture, Content, and Service). Using this approach, which combines guided and spontaneous learning acquisition, students are asked to employ new language skills both in the classroom and in service situations, giving them a learning experience like no other. The overall objective of full-immersion at SIS is for each student to develop a reflective intercultural competence, allowing him or her to function as a global citizen, capable of facing and interacting with different cultures throughout life.

Siena Italian Studies

SIS programs are intended for students with a wide range of motivations for studying abroad, and courses are offered in a variety of disciplines, all with an emphasis on the Italian perspective. All students are housed in family board accommodations, encouraging the use of language skills and deepening students’ interaction with Italian families and culture. In many courses, learning is not limited to the classroom. Whenever possible, SIS integrates field excursions and visits to enhance comprehension and provide students with a multifaceted experience.

Academic Programs SEMESTER AND YEAR PROGRAMS Semester Language/Elective (15 - 18 credits) Semester students begin with a three-week intensive 3 credit Italian language course. Following the intensive Italian language course, the group takes a break with a 4 day excursion to a selected destination and upon return the standard semester begins. Students enroll in one Italian Language course (6 credits) along with 2 or 3 elective courses for a total of 15 - 18 credits. During the first weeks of semester courses, lessons are conducted in a mix of English and Italian and students are given English language readings and supporting materials to ensure that the content is not compromised. As students’ linguistic competencies improve, more and more Italian is used and by the end, not only are lessons held in Italian, but also final papers are written in Italian. One Year Language/Elective (30 - 36 credits) Students enrolled in the One Year program complete both the Fall and Spring semesters. Students receive 15 - 18 credits each semester for a total of 30 - 36 credits.

SAIITALY Internship Opportunities Semester students can participate in a part time non credit internship to be completed as part of their Elective program. Internships can also be completed for credit if prior arrangements can be made with students’ home university. SAIITALY

The City

SAI Events and Excursions

Milan is the industrial, commercial, and financial center of Italy and a leading global powerhouse. The city is synonymous with cutting-edge fashion and design, and it is filled with the world’s premier fashion and design studios. It is also an important location for multinational corporations and banking interests, as it has the third largest economy among EU cities. Milan welcomes people from around the world, with one sixth of its population being foreign born.

For activities during a specific term see our website.

The city of Milan presents a harmonious fusion between stunning historical monuments such as the Milan Cathedral, cutting-edge fashion in the upscale fashion district of Quadrilatero della Moda, internationally recognized music and performance in noteworthy theaters, and the Porta Nuova financial district teeming with powerful executives. Milan’s positioning in northern Italy makes it an excellent jumping off point to anywhere throughout Europe, not least some nearby Italian treasures such as the Italian Alps, Lake Como, and the remarkable canals of Venice.

Student Life Students studying in Milan enjoy daily life in a dynamic, modern, international city. In addition to exploring Italy’s rich design heritage, students are challenged to develop their own creative voices and to explore new ideas, approaches and methods in the bustling city. Milan has many hidden gems: apart from the discount designer outlet stores, there are ample opportunities to discover the Italian dolce vita (sweet life) in the many outdoor cafés around the city. Since Milan is a large city, students find themselves using the efficient public transit (metro and buses) to get around, including getting from their apartment to school. Nightlife is abundant in Milan, with thousands of restaurants, cafes, clubs, shows, and performances. Milan’s geographical location allows easy access not only to all major Italian cities, but also to major European centers; the Swiss border is less than an hour away. Students can ski in the Alps in the winter months and enjoy Lake Garda, Como, and other famously beautiful Italian lakes in warmer times.

Volunteering Students in Milan have opportunities to get involved and volunteer through various organizations. Volunteer opportunities in Milan include assisting at soup kitchens and charities through Caritas Sant’Ambrogio or volunteering at large events in town such as the Milan Film Festival or Design Week. Students with proficiency in Italian language are able to volunteer more easily as many opportunities require Italian language.

NABAMILAN MASTER’S DEGREES SAI offers one and two year Master’s Degree programs at NABA conducted in English and accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education. Master’s in Creative Advertising (one year) The Master in Creative Advertising is a joint initiative between NABA and Media Design School, New Zealand. The program begins with an introduction to the basics of creative advertising, from terminology to best practices. Students then develop core skills in copywriting, story telling and art direction, to create advertising campaigns across different types of media. Leading companies challenge the students with workshop briefs designed to give them a working knowledge of advertising context. This program includes a professional internship. Master of Arts in Fashion and Textile Design (two years) The MA in Fashion and Textile Design is for young designers who adopt and recognize the language of fashion and are able to visually embrace the essence of the contemporary world (music, visual arts, humanistic culture, technical/scientific culture, craft and industrial technologies, experimentation and tradition): fashion is their language. The program runs as a sort of permanent lab, where students play a central role. Experienced professionals and leading figures in the field of fashion and creativity mentor the students in building their own skills to achieve a personal and professional identity.

Master of Arts in Interior Design (two years) In this MA in Interior Design, students explore the boundaries and constraints of the world of interior design, acquiring and widening their knowledge, critical awareness, and original thinking. Students develop a highly experimental attitude to pursue innovation both in theory and practice, through a widely interdisciplinary design approach. During an intensive twoyear exploration of interior spaces, students learn to envision the future: how we will live, how we will work, how we will communicate through interior spaces. Master of Arts in Product Design (two years) The MA in Design, with specialization in Product Design, prepares future designers and provides them with a contemporary approach to design, which originated from the Italian design culture. The program is structured around fifteen courses in which students are led by renowned design professionals in the investigation and design of the new relationship between human beings, the environment, and objects. The program is guided by a twofold approach: on one hand the analysis of the reference scenario, and on the other, the design or re-design activity through an experiential and physical relationship with the object. Students learn new methodologies and techniques while working with mentors in NABA’s atelier, where students study and apply different methodologies.

DAMILAN

SAIITALY Host School Founded in 1982, Domus Academy (DA) is considered one of Europe’s top design schools, offering Master’s and Pre-Master’s programs. Recent industry publications proclaim DA as one of the world’s top three design schools. DA is a member of CUMULUS, an association of European design schools. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro, Italy’s most sought after design award, and with a distinguished list of past lecturers such as Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Gianfranco Ferré, Neil Barrett, and Ron Arad, DA has always been a true pioneer of “Made in Italy”. Instruction at DA centers on a “learning by designing” methodology, in which students solve real-life design problems under the guidance of distinguished faculty. Beyond teaching how to design products, DA courses approach design as a complex, challenging activity, which directs the form and the meaning of industrial production, basing aesthetic and social visions with cultural consciousness.

Academic Programs

Domus Academy

SEMESTER PROGRAMS Semester Pre-Master’s Created for graduates, the Pre-Master’s Semester program provides students the foundational understanding of design that is required for admission to Domus Academy and NABA Master’s Degree programs. It also provides valuable opportunities to construct a professional portfolio under the guidance of mentors who are experts in the field. This fourmonth intensive postgraduate course runs August – December in the Fall and April – July in the Spring and prepares students to enter a Master’s Degree program at either DA or NABA or any design programs abroad.

DAMILAN MASTER’S DEGREES Domus Academy Master’s Degree programs are 1 year long and students receive an accredited Academic Master’s Degree from its sister school, Nuova Accademia Di Belle Arti (NABA), in addition to a Master’s Diploma from Domus Academy. Master’s in Business Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Business Design creates new connections between the worlds of business and design. Students work on projects relating to the business of design - and the design of business. Enlightening and interdisciplinary, the program focuses on how to apply design methodology, sensitivity, and culture to any business. Students study design-driven company management as they learn to draft plans for business development, branding, marketing, and communication - for product lines, startups, and established businesses. Master’s in Fashion Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Fashion Design brings students into direct contact with the fashion design industry in Italy and abroad. Students have the exciting opportunity to develop their own original, compelling fashion collection under the guidance of industry professionals. Through both theoretical studies and project experiences, students develop an individual mode of expression, explore the cultural factors that influence fashion trends, learn the ins and outs of production, and create innovative solutions.

Master’s in Fashion Management (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Fashion Management is a multi-disciplinary program for dynamic individuals who wish to enhance both their creative and managerial skills within the world of fashion. Through a combination of theory and hands-on practice, the program turns students into professionals who understand the language and rules of the fashion system, and who have expertise in brand management and communications. Students learn by working directly with fashion industry managers and creative professionals, and gain the skills to generate proposals, guide the creative process, and oversee production, distribution, and marketing. Master’s in Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Fashion Styling and Visual Merchandising investigates the role of the fashion stylist, who selects the clothing for fashion editorials and advertisements, alongside the role of the visual merchandiser, who creates fashion displays to provide customers with fresh in-store experiences. The degree merges these two roles to create a new professional profile: that of the “visual fashion brand communicator,” who directs the visual communication of a fashion brand. As students study to become visual fashion brand communicators, they learn to convey a brand’s identity and values through visual storytelling tools and create a compelling visual language for the brand.

Domus is different because it simulates a professional working environment. The students become the creative, marketing or management team; trying to figure out solutions for real-world problems, and obtaining skills they can apply in the working world at the same time. Because of their hands-on approach to learning, I was able to collaborate with significant companies and individuals that I never would have had the chance to interact with otherwise. ~ Milan Student, DA Business Design Graduate 2013

www.saiprograms.com

SAIITALY Master’s in Interaction Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Interaction Design introduces the theoretical knowledge and professional skills needed to define problems and solutions in interaction and user design. Students analyze and experiment with software and hardware technology to develop confidence with the palette of tools and platforms that form the foundation for designing interactive solutions. DA’s “learning by designing” approach is based on the tradition of Italian mentorship in design. Students work directly with companies to develop concepts, scenarios, and strategies. Master’s in Interior and Living Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Interior and Living Design encourages students to consider a wide range of design practices as they learn to shape the space of interiors. Students are inspired to overcome disciplinary boundaries, make choices that are both more sophisticated and more daring, and cultivate an attitude of continuous inquiry into the material and immaterial aspects of space. The program introduces the theory, best practices, and methodologies to not only solve problems creatively, but to define problems as well. As students collaborate with their international peers on company projects that reinvent the interior domain, they come to define their own work in the context of the field. Master’s in Luxury Brand Management (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Luxury Brand Management turns participants into inspired managers and marketers within the highly competitive fields of luxury fashion, jewelry, cosmetics, hospitality, gastronomy, beauty, or art. Students examine marketing, branding, and communication for this unique market, as well as financial and team management. They explore how to create elegant products and heightened experiences for exclusive customers, while remaining sensitive to the cultural factors that surround the concept of luxury. Through a combination of theory and practice, students take innovative branding strategies from concept to execution. Master’s in Product Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The Master’s in Product Design combines the study of theory with direct experience. In addition to honing the “problem solving” skills required for all designers, students also develop a “problem defining” approach: the ability to determine the true parameters of each design challenge. As students learn to follow their intuition and promote their aesthetic vision, they cultivate awareness of the reasons behind design choices. Through workshop collaborations with eminent professionals from local studios and businesses, students experiment with design methodologies and develop a deeper understanding of product design.

Master’s in Urban Vision and Architectural Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake Cities are experimental laboratories where humans formulate and refine responses to our basic needs: for shelter, relationships, movement, commerce. In the Master’s in Urban Vision & Architectural Design students learn strategies for transforming a city, from private developments to public space. Students envision future urban and architectural scenarios, according to complex dynamics and evolving requirements. Master’s in Visual Brand Design (one year) Terms: Fall Intake, Spring Intake The concept of branding has evolved far beyond company logos and colors. Today, branding incorporates several disciplines, from visual design to sound design; from storytelling to consumer psychology to marketing. Branding is the creation of a rich and attractive environment that grabs the consumer’s attention and brings him or her into the brand’s world to share its values and become an informal sponsor of the brand. In the Master’s in Visual Brand Design students gain the skills to identify a company’s core assets and to cultivate a deep understanding of the product and the best way to communicate its values, both in the physical and the social media worlds.

HOUSING

DEADLINES

Housing assignments are sent by email 5-10 days prior to check-in day. Students requesting a private room and/or premium services are required to pay the private room supplement and/or premium supplement prior to our processing their request. Students electing to make their own housing arrangements will receive a reduction in the program cost.

STEP 1: Submit Application Submit application and supplemental materials by the deadline. Please note that late applications are accepted on a space available basis; contact SAI for information.

Please note: Housing is not included in the Master’s and Postgraduate degree programs, as well as some Tuition-Only programs. Enrolled students will be provided with housing options that can be secured independently.

DISABILITIES SAI is dedicated to providing education abroad opportunities to all students. If you experience any emotional, mental, physical or learning disabilities which may interfere with your ability to successfully pursue an academic course, and which you wish to be taken into account, please notify SAI as soon as possible. Advance planning is important in order to ensure the best possible experience abroad. Although we may not be able to require our partner schools abroad to provide accommodations, SAI can offer understanding, respect, and support, and we will do our best to assist students in finding reasonable accommodations similar to their home institutions. Regarding physical disability, it is important to note that Europe’s infrastructure and ability to accommodate disabled individuals differs from what is available in the United States. SAI will do its best to reasonably accommodate all students’ needs. Among our program choices, certain sites are better equipped to assist students with disabilities than others. As this may be a factor in choosing which SAI program abroad to attend, notify us of any and all disabilities before applying.

STUDENT VISAS It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all necessary travel documents are procured and in their possession prior to program start. Student visas may be required. SAI will provide advice and assistance with travel and visa requirements, but students assume full responsibility for verifying any and all entry requirements and obtaining a student visa, if required. At the time of this brochure’s printing, all U.S. students studying in Italy, Spain, and France for more than 90 days are required to obtain a student visa prior to departing the U.S. U.S. students studying in London for less than 6 months are not required to obtain a student visa, however, students enrolled in an internship program in London are required to obtain one. Non U.S. Citizens and students not residing in the U.S. should contact the nearest Consulate to determine whether or not they will be required to obtain a student visa.

STEP 2: Acceptance/Confirmation Deposit Notification of acceptance status is sent via email. Within 7 days of receiving the email acceptance a non-refundable confirmation deposit must be paid to secure enrollment. Programs with housing also require that a refundable security deposit and any applicable housing supplements be paid at this time. Acceptance letters include instructions and program payment dates. Step 3: Payment 1 - Equal to 50% of your total Program Cost Due by: Fall Semester/Intake: May 1 Fall Quarter: June 1 Spring Semester/Intake: October 1 Spring Quarter: October 15 Summer terms: 90 days prior to check-in Step 4: Payment 2 - Balance of Program Cost Due by: Fall Semester/Intake: July 1 Fall Quarter: June 1 Spring Semester/Intake: December 1 Spring Quarter: December 15 Summer Programs: 60 days prior to check-in date Please note: Students confirmed after Payment 1 / Payment 2 due dates will receive an email from the SAI business office regarding further program payments now due. Either 50% or 100% of Program Cost will be due within 5 business days, based on the date of acceptance.

PAYMENTS Costs may be combined in one payment. All payments, including wire transfers, should list the applicant’s name. Students enrolling in more than one term must pay fees and deposits for all terms at the time of application. A separate Security Deposit must be paid for each term (refundable at the end of that term). Payment Options: • Personal check, money order or cashier’s check made payable to “SAI Programs” mailed to: SAI Programs, 7160 Keating Avenue Sebastopol, CA 95472 USA. • Online Payment by Visa or MasterCard and E-checks. POLICIESPROCEDURES FINANCIAL AID Undergraduate students who currently receive federal, state, or institutional financial aid may be able to use some or all of their aid toward the cost of their SAI program. Only the student’s home university can confirm that the financial aid may be used to fund the SAI program. Financial aid students are able to defer the payment of their program cost balance (i.e. the amount that aid will cover) until their financial aid is disbursed. Financial aid students are required to pay the application fee, confirmation deposit, security deposit and any applicable housing supplements. Financial aid students who wish to defer their program cost balance are required to complete and submit the SAI Financial Aid Verification Forms by the following deadlines: • Fall semester: July 1 • Spring semester: November 15 • Summer: Final payment due date Students whose financial aid award is not sufficient to cover all program costs must pay the remainder by the regular payment deadlines. Financial aid monies are applied last and any balance must be paid by their earlier due date. Please note that Financial Aid students remain responsible for all cancellation penalties that apply, even if program fees have not yet been paid.

MASTER’S DEGREE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE (Available only for Milan programs at this time) SAI offers a unique opportunity for students obtaining their Master’s degree at Domus Academy (DA) or Nouva Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) to apply for a U.S. student loan. Students who are required to enroll through a U.S. university in order to be eligible for a student loan, will be processed through our U.S. school of record Fairfield University, in Connecticut. Please note that there is a Fairfield University processing fee for this option. Students must submit the application fee, confirmation deposit and Fairfield University processing fee prior to applying for the Sallie Mae Smart Option Loan.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS Undergraduate, High School, Career Programs Check-in day is considered the start of the term. The Confirmation Deposit is not refundable at any time, as it secures and commits your place in the program. Further program cost liability is based on the date on which a cancellation request is received in writing (email or fax). If a cancellation is made 76 or more days before check-in day, a full refund is provided (minus the non-refundable Confirmation Deposit). If a cancellation notice is received 75 days or less before check-in day, students are liable for the following penalties: ITALY / FRANCE / SPAIN PROGRAMS: • 75 - 45 days before the start of term: 25% of the Program Cost • 44 - 8 days before the start of term: 50% of the Program Cost • 7 days or less before the start of term: 100% of the Program Cost LONDON PROGRAMS: • 75 – 45 days before the start of term: 35% of the Program Cost • 44 – 8 days before the start of term: 50% of the Program Cost • 7 days or less before the start of term: 100% of the Program Cost

SAI does not determine course offerings abroad nor is SAI responsible for course or program cancellations. The host schools reserve the right to cancel courses/programs up to four weeks prior to the start of the term should the minimum number of required students for a course or program not be met. If a course/program is canceled, students will be offered an alternate course/program. In certain circumstances SAI may be able to offer a deferment on enrollment, allowing students to register for a future term. However neither SAI nor the host schools are responsible for any fees incurred due to program cancellation (including airfare charges). For this reason, SAI strongly recommends that students always select an alternate course/program and/or purchase travel and tuition insurance.

HOUSING-ONLY CANCELLATION If an enrolled student chooses to cancel their Housing Request to seek private housing, the following penalties apply, based on the date a housing cancellation is received in writing: • 76 days or more before the start of term: student will receive a refund of the housing cost. • 75 days or less before the start of term: student is liable for 100% of the housing cost (equal to 25% of full program cost, except for London, which is equal to 35% of full program cost).

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS Master’s, Postgraduate Programs Orientation day is considered the start of the term. The confirmation deposit is not refundable at any time, as it secures and commits your place in the program. Further program cost liability is based on the date on which a formal cancellation request is received in writing (email or fax). Cancellations received 46 days or more before the start of term will not be penalized. If a cancellation notice is received 45 days or less before the start of the term, students are liable for the following charges: • 45 - 30 days before the start of term: 10% of the Program Cost • 29 - 8 days before the start of term: 50% of the Program Cost • 7 days or less before the start of term: 100% of the Program Cost If either the Consulate refuses a student visa (written proof required), the host school cancels a course, or if a student has applied for a loan and been denied (written proof required) $1,000 of the Confirmation Deposit will be refunded. $500 of the Confirmation Deposit is not refundable. SAI does not determine course offerings abroad nor is SAI responsible for course or program cancellations. The host schools reserve the right to cancel courses/programs should the minimum number of required students for a course or program not be met, up to: • NABA/Domus: four weeks prior to the start of the term • Elisava: two weeks prior to the start of the term In certain circumstances SAI may be able to offer a deferment on enrollment, allowing students to register for a future term. However neither SAI nor the host schools are responsible for any fees incurred due to program cancellation (including airfare charges). For this reason, SAI strongly recommends that students purchase travel and tuition insurance.

REFUNDS Refunds are paid to the person who originally made payment, in the same form the payment was made (either by wire transfer or back to the credit card used) within 4 weeks of cancellation.

In 2015 SAI celebrated its 20th anniversary, a milestone we were proud to accomplish. We have come a long way from the handful of students our first semester; SAI now works with 22 partner schools in 8 European cities, and has helped over 20,000 students achieve their dream of studying abroad. At SAI we believe strongly in the power of international education, and are proud to be contributing to generations of globally-minded individuals. In our 20th anniversary year we celebrated the efforts of the people and partner schools that helped us get there, and recognized the impact that study abroad has had, and will continue to have, on our alumni and staff.
