Benvenuto Bienvenida Bienvenue Welcome Christa Casolino, University of Missouri • SAI Spring 2017 photo contest winner Walking On Sunshine: This photo was taken in Paris, France at sunrise in front of the Eiffel Tower.
Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues: I still vividly recall the first time I landed in a foreign country as a young man. My senses felt overloaded; everything seemed utterly different. And my world changed. The impact of study abroad on a young person’s life is immeasurable. Years later, while living in Italy for 8 years with my family and working in international education, it was part of my job to know the college study opportunities available in Europe to English speaking students. I also came to know the truly exceptional schools, ones that would be an outstanding experience for any student. Back then my work was with secondary students, high school students living abroad and choosing a college soon, some even staying in Italy. When my family and I returned to the U.S. in 1995 my interest in education abroad focused on options for college students and it was evident that opportunities were limited and difficult to access. As a result, I began to build SAI that year, with the goal of making it possible for all students to experience study abroad, especially at these exceptional schools I’d come to know. • In 2018 SAI celebrates 23 years of service. SAI’s hands-on approach has enabled us to match each student’s needs with the finest study abroad options in Europe. Our students experience SAI as an organization that provides programs and services of distinguishing quality and always with a personal touch. • As President, I am committed to maintaining SAI as a small, personalized organization with staff who care for students and respond to their academic interests, cultural curiosities and career goals. As an intentionally small organization we are able to help each individual student feel comfortable in a new cultural environment. And as a small organization we pay attention to the smallest details, allowing students the greatest access to learning and cultural exposure. • SAI is dedicated to introducing students to opportunities that encourage creative interaction across disciplines: communication, science, technology, art and design, economics and social sciences. In this way we seek to help students develop both the breadth and depth of creative thinking, cultural knowledge and professional skills, so when they return from their experience abroad they have a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. We believe this will provide an advantage to them in their chosen careers and for the rest of their lives. I invite you to learn more about SAI by visiting our web site: www.saiprograms.com. Loving How to Learn Again: The Renaissance of my Education STUDENT BLOGSPOTLIGHT On a journey to shift my perspective and drive vitality back into my studies and work, I came to Florence University of the Arts (FUA). Florence, as the hub of the Renaissance and a cultural capital of the world, would offer me the chance to explore expression and intercultural communication. And, so, I decided to enroll in a unique course called Words, Painting and Emotions designed by Nicoletta Salomon, a FUA professor and established painter and writer. A classicist by education, Professor Salomon encourages cultural dialogue through exploring the artistic heritages of the past and present. The course focuses on releasing individual creative styles through philosophical discussion, historical research and painting exercises. We are not held to an academic standard but rather an expectation of expression efforts. We are asked: how hard are you working at discovering? What are you learning? What do you see? Why do you do what you do?
I feel a rebirth of my
education happening, a
to a set of standards, practices or identity limits our own ability to excel. Words, Painting and Emotions has been my favorite course because it asks me to think and perform beyond the rubric. During my time abroad, I have been able to develop a deeper understanding of the world around me simply by taking a walk outside, talking to new people, observing my surroundings and painting about those experiences. I’m becoming unstuck; I am loving the process of learning again. Sometimes the best form of travel is the kind that takes you to new corners of your mind. I am so lucky to have Florence and my courses abroad to take me to that place. Isabel Pellegrino, The George Washington University, SAI Florence.
revival of my passion for the process of learning.
This is what abroad has been all about. Instead of seeking a certain answer or striving towards a certain identity, I have been asked to transform, discover, express and challenge without a specific end goal. Professor Salomon’s course has encouraged patience and helped me appreciate a different form of learning. When I dip my brush in water and watch it blend with pigment, I am in awe of this simple, yet beautiful, fusion. It is common that we put ourselves, and education, into a box. It is true that the box can serve a purpose—keeping us in line, setting goals and providing clarity of purpose. Nevertheless, to confine education

Elisava Master’s Degrees are awarded by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and Elisava Barcelona School of Design and Engineering. Advanced Design and Digital Architecture Master’s Degree (one year) Since the decline of the Modernist Movement, architecture theory has shown a strong interest in positivist project methodologies. The study of complexity and dynamic systems has restored interest in the study of networks, “bottom-up” methods, adaptive systems, genetics and the automatic creation of form as the pillars of a new generation of design techniques. The relentless emergence of digital innovations in the world of design has made it possible to adopt new patterns of thought and planning. Students of Advanced Design and Digital Architecture (ADDA) will plunge into these and related issues in order to learn, develop, and innovate. Graphic Design Master’s Degree (one year) The Master’s Degree in Graphic Design teaches contemporary design and communication techniques, while offering students the opportunity to specialize in editorial design and/ or in environmental graphic design. Students are encouraged to create and produce unique projects to develop their own visual language. This program also emphasizes the role of the graphic designer in contemporary society as an agent of cultural transformation.
Interior Design Master’s Degree (one year) The Master’s Degree in Interior Design offers a deep-dive into the theory and practice of interior spaces, focusing on the changing social, economic, technological and environmental conditions that effect domestic and work spaces. The degree develops students’ capacity to analyze, identify and create solutions to design problems in the built environment using critical thinking and spatial understanding. Photography and Design Master’s Degree (one year) In addition to guiding students to a mastery of photographic technique, the Elisava Photography and Design Master’s Degree focuses on students’ ability to articulate ideas through the production of photographic projects based on a rigorous and critical understanding of the photographic market context. Research for Design and Innovation Master’s Degree (one year) The Master’s Degree in Research for Design and Innovation combines two powerful disciplines in the pre-design process: trend research and co-creation techniques. It is focused on providing current tools related to qualitative and ethnographic research, interdisciplinary focus, and design thinking geared toward innovation processes applicable to society and industry. Retail Design Master’s Degree (one year) The Retail Design Master’s Degree is for professionals who wish to acquire the essential knowledge to work on and design retail spaces. The program provides instruction on the many disciplines within retail. From small-scale to large-scale design, from boutiques to large multinational brands, students become comfortable with the specifics and differences in each setting. Temporary Space Design Master’s Degree (one year) The Master’s Degree in Temporary Space Design offers an in-depth exploration of the main temporary space formats: event, pop-up, public space intervention and exhibition. I’m Solomon, but you can call me Sollie. I’m a 3rd year student from the Rochester Institute of Technology. While in high school, I participated in an exchange program to Burgos, Spain and in the fall of 2016 returned to Spain for a semester abroad at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Studying abroad helped shape the way I think. In high school I hated Spanish. I had signed up for the exchange program because I love to see and learn about new places. Once in Spain, I fell in love with speaking Spanish and learned what it is like to be a young adult in Spain.

We offer fun and interesting opportunities for students to become SAI alumni for life—studying abroad is just a step in the journey to global citizenship! RE-ENTRY RESOURCES We offer various resources to help alumni understand all of the changes they went through abroad. We offer paid registration fees for re-entry conferences so students can connect with other globally-minded students and think about how they would like to weave their international experience into their future. Additionally, it is often difficult for students to articulate everything they gained through their time abroad, and we provide helpful guides to assist students with talking about it both in a personal and professional manner. We provide assistance with discussing study abroad experiences in job searches, including in resumes, cover letters, and interviews.
Florence University of the Arts
SAI AMBASSADORS We invite recent SAI alumni to join the SAI Ambassador Program to become representatives of study abroad and SAI on their home campus. SAI Ambassadors have an entrepreneurial spirit, and use their initiative to creatively share their study abroad experiences, while building knowledge of international education. After completing the SAI Ambassador program, students have opportunities for paid internships with SAI, as well as becoming Leadership Mentors. GO ABROAD AGAIN DISCOUNTS We never want to say goodbye - that’s why we offer discounts for alumni to return abroad with SAI. Go abroad again with SAI on a summer or semester program, or participate in a different type of international experience such as an internship, graduate certificate program or even earn your Master’s degree abroad. ALUMNI PHOTO CONTEST Our Alumni Photo Contest asks students to reflect on their study abroad experiences and identify the most meaningful photos that embody the growth and memories that came from them. We offer prizes like gift certificates and fun travel swag.
SAI ALUMNI NETWORK We welcome all SAI alumni to join the SAI Alumni group, which connects past and present SAI students across the globe. The group is a resource for getting to know others who have been through similar experiences, expanding professional networks, gaining professional development advice, and learning about unique opportunities in international education. “I spent my first day in Paris taking selfies with the Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum, wandering down the streets of Saint Michel and having a picnic dinner in front of the Eiffel Tower. I will never forget my time in this beautiful city.”
