SAI Summer Programs

Since 1995, SAI has provided students with exceptional cultural and educational experiences abroad, offering the opportunity to enroll in some of the finest schools available to English speaking students in Europe. By encouraging students to explore the complex intersections between self, community, and creativity, SAI aims to provide an inspiring and transformative experience for all participants. All SAI services, in the U.S. and overseas, are geared toward ensuring student safety and maximizing the student experience; both in terms of providing a framework for academic inquiry, and offering each student opportunities for personal growth and development.

Summer programs are a great way to study abroad without interrupting regular semester study and to see the host cities at their most popular time. SAI summer programs range from 3 - 12 weeks in length, and award 3 - 12 credits. Each program is unique, with coursework in our full range of disciplines, and options for elective coursework, intensive language study, or block courses for an immersive experience in specific areas of study. On top of undergraduate coursework, we offer high school, pre-college, and graduate level summer programs to accommodate various levels of students. Students enrolled in SAI summer programs have opportunities to complete for-credit internships, service learning, and multi-city study.

What does SAI offer? SAI offers educational and cultural experiences abroad at a variety of academic and professional levels. Our programs pair academic excellence with a commitment to cultural and community integration, offering an immersive abroad experience. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE We partner with some of the finest European universities to provide students with exceptional academic experiences in all areas of study and academic level, and award U.S. credit for all undergraduate coursework. We develop programs that challenge students, and help them to understand their field of study from different perspectives. Our Admissions Counselors help students find the right program, enroll in courses, and prepare for an experience of a lifetime.

SAIPROGRAMS CAREER PREPARATION SAI programs offer a variety of activities that help students gain meaningful experiences abroad beyond classroom learning. We offer various programs with internship components, community volunteering opportunities, and leadership training such as the SAI Global Leadership Certificate. These opportunities foster a global outlook and a leadership mentality, and prepare students for future careers and global citizenship. COMMUNITY EMPHASIS Community is at the root of everything we do. We provide a sense of community both for study abroad students, and the people and places that welcome them. SAI programs include an active calendar of activities and excursions designed to foster a deeper understanding of the local community. Our on-site staff members create a welcoming community for our students, and are available to offer assistance with personal and academic challenges. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE At SAI, we are committed to making study abroad achievable for everyone, and we provide financial assistance to help students realize their dream. We offer scholarships ranging from $300 to $5,000 to support students with academic need and merit. We are also able to process financial aid from students’ home schools, allowing students to defer payment until their financial aid has been disbursed. LEADING SERVICES SAI programs stand out for our services, ranging from our exceptional housing, to our 24-hour support on-site. We offer pre-departure assistance with visa and passport applications, course registration, and all the tips and advice from over 20 years of experience. Each SAI city has on-site staff dedicated to ensuring a productive, safe, and unforgettable experience abroad that includes comfortable housing, engaging activities, and a supportive community. SAI re-entry services welcome students home with the same community that welcomed them in their host country. We have simple re-entry procedures, and opportunities for students to become SAI alumni for life.

FLORENCEITALY Florence University of the Arts (FUA) Florence University of the Arts (FUA) is a young, vibrant institution offering liberal arts coursework that takes a contemporary approach to international education. With small classes taught by highly qualified international faculty, FUA courses aim to enhance the social, intercultural and professional experience of each student. In addition to coursework in arts and sciences, communication, and business, FUA offers unique opportunities for students to enroll in cutting-edge courses in fashion, design, architecture, fine arts, culinary and wine studies, as well as a wide range of liberal arts and business courses.

Summer Programs Summer 3 weeks (3 - 6 credits) Students studying abroad in FUA’s 3 week summer programs select 1 or 2 courses for an intensive 3 weeks. SAI offers four Summer 3 week sessions at FUA, each with different start dates and course options: Summer I, Summer II, Summer III, and Summer IV. Summer 6 weeks (6 - 9 credits) Students in FUA’s 6 week summer programs select 2 or 3 courses from the elective offering for 6 - 9 credits. Courses are offered in various subjects, with opportunities to enroll in unique experiential learning courses and internships. SAI offers two standard Summer 6 week sessions at FUA, each with different start dates and course options: Summer A, and Summer B. Summer 6 weeks C (9 - 12 credits) SAI also offers Summer C, which is a combination of the Summer II and Summer III sessions. During the Summer II session students embark on a 3 week 6 credit travel adventure course across Italy. The Italian Civilization and Culture course begins in Milan and ends in Florence where the second half of the program begins. Students then take 1 to 2 courses from the elective offering in Florence for a program total of 9 - 12 credits.

Summer Program Add-Ons Students enrolled in FUA summer programs have various options to add unique traveling or culturally integrated courses to the start of their programs. The following add-on courses are available: • Cultural Introduction to Italy (1 week / 3 credits) • Cultural Introduction to the Italian Family (1 week / 3 credits) • The Italian Food Industry: from Farm to Table (1 week / 3 credits) Students adding these courses experience Italy from unique perspectives, often traveling for hands-on exposure to culturally relevant locations.

Summer Semester 12 weeks (9 - 12 credits) Students in FUA’s 12 week summer semester program are able to complete a large number of credits in the summer. Students select 3 or 4 courses from a wide range of liberal arts options for a total of 9 - 12 credits. Students are also able to complete a 3 credit internship as part of their summer program.

SAI Florence The treasure that is the city of Florence has attracted visitors from every society, from Roman to modern times. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is its Renaissance art and architecture, which have contributed to it frequently being named one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Florence is a very manageable city for study abroad students, who can regularly interact with visitors from around the world. The SAI Florence office is centrally located and offers meeting and study space for students, as well as open office hours during which on-site staff provides support and guidance. Program-inclusive activities in Florence include bookmaking, soccer games, and cooking classes.

Summer Internship Opportunities Summer students enrolled in the 6 or 12 week programs can apply for a part time 3 credit internship to be completed as part of their elective program. Students are placed in internships that complement their major or minor, and are supported by an internship supervisor. While Italian language proficiency is not required, it is helpful for expanding the placement options. Internships are available in the following fields:

High School Summer 3 - 4 weeks (6 - 9 credits) The High School Summer program is designed to give high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while living in a supportive study abroad environment for 3 or 4 weeks. Courses offer exploration into various fields, including fine arts, language, culture, and history. Students can either complete 3 weeks of study in Florence, or begin the 4 week program with a 1 week Cultural Introduction to Italy traveling course, ending up in Florence for 3 weeks. The program includes dedicated staff and daily events and excursions for a rich social and cultural Italian experience.

Since 1972, John Cabot University (JCU) has offered students from around the world the opportunity to pursue an exceptional academic and cultural education in the heart of one of the most inspiring cities in the world. JCU is accredited in the U.S. by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and offers a liberal arts curriculum taught entirely in English. The school draws professors from around the world who are committed to a multicultural environment, and to imparting a global understanding.

Summer Programs Summer 5 weeks (3 - 6 credits) Students in JCU’s 5 week summer program select 1 or 2 courses from the unique offering for a total of 3 - 6 credits. SAI offers two Summer 5 week sessions at JCU, each with different start dates and course options: Summer I and Summer II. Students have the option of participating in a Summer Institute as part of their term, which offers a deep-dive into creative writing. Summer 11 weeks (6 - 12 credits) The 11 week summer program is offered as a combination of JCU’s two back-to-back 5 week summer programs, giving summer students the chance to enjoy an extended amount of time in Rome. Students enroll in 1 or 2 courses in each of the two 5 week sessions, for a total of 6 - 12 credits. In addition to the wide range of coursework offered, students have the chance to participate in a unique creative writing Summer Institute. Creative Writing Summer Institute Option Summer students can participate in the JCU Summer Institute in Creative Writing and Literary Translation that occurs alongside the first Summer 5 week session. This program allows passionate students to engage more deeply in the field of creative writing and gain access to leaders in the field. The Institute offers additional activities on top of regular coursework that include seminars, special events, and networking dinners. Students who complete an Institute program receive a certificate in addition to their regular course transcript. Graduate Summer 5 weeks (3 - 6 credits) This unique graduate-level 5 week summer program offers students who hold a bachelor’s degree a deep-dive into creative writing and literary translation. The program, developed in collaboration with American University’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, brings together notable faculty with awardwinning writers in the heart of the Eternal City. Students enroll in one of several workshops offered in poetry, fiction writing, literary translation, and literature for creative writers.

ROMEITALY Italiaidea Institute Italiaidea Institute, authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education, has been offering outstanding courses in Italian language and culture since 1984, becoming the foremost language institute in Rome, with about 1,500 students every year. Located in the heart of ancient Rome near Campo dei Fiori and a block from the Tiber River, the school draws students from around the world, creating an international environment while focusing on the Italian language and its culture.

Summer Programs

SAI Rome Study abroad students are quickly swept up into the profound history of the enchanting city of Rome. Visitors can enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine in a beautiful park, savor a gelato on the Spanish Steps, or study art history overlooking the Trevi Fountain. SAI’s Rome office is located in the beautiful Trastevere neighborhood, near SAI partner schools and housing. SAI Rome on-site staff holds open office hours to provide advising and support, and the office includes space for students to meet and study. Program-inclusive activities in Rome include gelato making, bike rides and beach trips.

MILANITALY Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) Founded in 1921, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC), or “Cattolica”, is the largest private university in Europe. Cattolica’s Milan campus hosts over 27,000 students per year and is located in a beautiful 8th century monastery, renovated by Bramante in the 1600’s. The school is an integral part of the local community of Milan, attracting students from within Italy as well as from around the world. Visiting students at Cattolica join others from around the world in elective courses offered in English across the liberal arts curriculum. The bustling streets around the campus are full of cafés, restaurants and shops. Yet hidden discreetly within the school’s perimeter are picturesque gardens and courtyards, all of which add to the unique ambience and study environment.

SAI Milan Milan is the industrial, commercial, and financial center of Italy and a leading global powerhouse. The city of Milan presents a harmonious fusion between stunning historical monuments such as the Milan Cathedral, cutting-edge fashion and design seen in the fashion district of Quadrilatero dell Moda, internationally recognized music and performance in noteworthy theaters, and the financial district of Porta Nuova teeming with powerful executives. Students in Milan can enjoy the city, as well as easily travel to nearby treasures such as the Italian Alps, Lake Como, and the remarkable canals of Venice. SAI on-site staff welcomes students to the city and provides advising and support, as well as open office hours. Program-inclusive activities in Milan include wine tasting, museum tours, and food tours.

Summer Programs Summer 4 weeks (6 credits) Students in UCSC’s 4 week summer programs enroll in two backto-back 2 week courses from the variety of English-taught courses for a total of 6 credits. Course options include such titles as Italian Cuisine History & Cooking Lab, Fashion Markets, and A Mafia Story. SAI offers two Summer 4 week sessions at UCSC, each with different dates and course options: Summer I and Summer II. Summer 6 weeks (9 credits) Students spend 6 weeks in the heart of the bustling city, completing three back-to-back 2 week courses for a total of 9 credits. Course options include titles like Luxury Goods, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Foods. Students also have the option of enrolling in an International Relations course, which extends the program by 1 week.

MILANITALY Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) Summer Areas of Study Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) was founded in Milan in 1980 and is the only design school in Italy accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education. NABA instructors are world-renowned artists, professionals, and designers working in Milan. NABA subscribes to the philosophy that creativity is best cultivated in an international atmosphere, and welcomes students from around 60 different countries. The school is located in the Navigli area of Milan, and uses 12 buildings to provide exceptional equipment and studio space for its 2,000 students. NABA is among the member institutions of the European League of Institutes of the Arts and the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, which consists of members from over 800 international art and design universities.

Summer 6 weeks (9 credits) SAI students in NABA’s 6 week summer program complete 3 courses in design, fashion, and photography subjects while spending an unforgettable summer in the bustling city. SORRENTOITALY Sant’Anna Institute (SA) Sant’Anna Institute (SA) is housed in an historic former convent and school, located in the old center of Sorrento, just steps from the sea of the Amalfi coast. Each classroom offers stunning views of the Gulf of Naples to one side, and olive groves to the other. The school’s grounds include lovely gardens and fruit trees and it is a short walk to the center of town. The small and intimate nature of the SA program allows students to fully immerse themselves in Italian life and culture while studying liberal arts coursework and building lasting relationships with their fellow students.

Summer Programs Summer 5 weeks (3 - 6 credits) SAI’s 5 week summer programs at SA take advantage of the school’s location on the Southern Italy coast, with courses that discuss Mediterranean culture, history and arts. Students enroll in 1 or 2 elective courses for a total of 3 - 6 credits or a part-time summer internship for 3 credits. SAI offers two 5 week summer programs at SA, each with different start dates and course options: Summer I and Summer II. Summer 10 weeks (6 - 12 credits) Students in SA’s 10 week summer program complete two backto-back 5 week programs, enrolling in a total of 2 to 4 elective courses awarding 6 - 12 credits. These students also have the option to complete a part-time summer internship for 3 credits that spans the duration of the 10 week program. Summer Internship Opportunities Summer students enrolled in the 5 or 10 week program can complete a part-time 3 credit internship. Students are placed in internships that complement their major or minor, and are supported by ongoing reflective coursework. Internships are available in the following fields:

SAI Sorrento Sorrento is located on the north end of the Amalfi coast, on the Mediterranean Sea. The natural beauty of the Sorrentine landscape with its mild climate, lively piazzas, vibrant cultural scene, lemon groves and the allure of nearby sights such as Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast all conspire to make Sorrento an inspiring location to study abroad. SIENAITALY Siena Italian Studies (SIS)

SAI Siena

Siena Italian Studies (SIS) is a study abroad program based at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange. SIS programs are a “gentle full-immersion” in Italian life for highly motivated beginner, intermediate and advanced Italian language students. SIS offers some of the most innovative programs in Italy that work to fully integrate the education of language, culture and service learning, in and out of the classroom. SIS programs are intended for students with a wide range of motivations for studying abroad, and courses are offered in a variety of disciplines, all with an emphasis on the Italian perspective.

Nestled in rolling hills in the heart of Tuscany, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. Students get to know Siena’s community through their homestay and language integration, and are quickly able to navigate the city easily by foot and transit. SAI students join the school’s varied activities including hiking, wine and cheese tastings, visiting hot springs and operas, and even attending the famous Il Palio.

Summer Programs SIS Summer programs allow students to study Italian language and culture in a condensed time frame, as well as explore Tuscany during a remarkable time of year. Using the “gentle fullimmersion” model, SIS summer courses are taught in Italian, with English mixed in for beginning language students. Summer 4 weeks (6 credits) Students in the 4 week summer program enroll in one 3 credit Italian language course and one 3 credit elective course for a total of 6 credits. Elective courses include Sociolinguistic Studies and Medieval Italian History.

Summer 6 weeks (9 credits) Students enroll in one 3 credit Italian language course and two elective 3 credit courses for a total of 9 credits. Elective courses include Italian Language Through Time, Space and Media, and Art History. Summer 8 weeks (9 - 12 credits) Students in the 8 week summer program enroll in 3 or 6 credits of Italian language and two elective 3 credit courses for a total of 9 - 12 credits. Elective courses include Italian Emigration to the Americas and Medieval Italian History.

SYRACUSEITALY Syracuse Academy Syracuse Academy provides specialized study abroad programs focused on Mediterranean culture, landscape and history, in a beautiful seaside setting. Summer Programs Summer 4 weeks (3 - 6 credits) Syracuse Academy’s 4 week summer program takes advantage of the school’s location on the Italian island of Sicily, with courses that discuss ancient Sicily, Mt. Etna and the Italian Mafia. Students enroll in 1 or 2 language or elective courses for a total of 3 - 6 credits, or one intensive 4 credit Italian language course. Summer 6 weeks (3 - 6 credits) Students enrolled in the 6 week summer program have the option of completing 6 credits of intensive Italian language, or one 3 credit part-time internship on the beautiful island of Sicily. This program offers ample opportunities to engage with the local community through community service, language exchange and integrated activities. Summer 10 weeks + Internship (6 - 9 credits) Syracuse Academy’s 10 week summer program offers students the opportunity to combine 4 weeks of academic and language courses with a 6 week internship. Courses use the region as their classroom, with subjects like Volcanology, the Mafia, Archaeology, and more, while internships are offered in close partnership with local organizations in various fields. Students enroll in 1 or 2 elective courses for the first 4 weeks, and then complete a 6 week 3 credit internship, for a total of 6 - 9 credits. Summer Internship Opportunities Study abroad students enrolled in the 6 or 10 week program can complete a part-time 3 credit internship. PARISFRANCE American University of Paris (AUP) Founded in 1962, the American University of Paris (AUP) is one of the oldest American institutions of higher learning in Europe, offering a liberal arts curriculum with U.S. accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. AUP is an urban institution and its campus is composed of buildings centrally located near the Eiffel Tower and the Seine River. Students studying abroad at AUP are integrated into the degree-seeking population, which is composed of over 100 nationalities, with a total of 1,000 students. AUP courses are exciting and relevant, and incorporate the city of Paris into the learning experience: students learn in its museums, paint in its streets, study the multiethnic world of contemporary French life and immerse themselves in European culture.

Summer Programs Summer 6 weeks (8 credits) During AUP’s 6 week summer program, students enroll in two courses for a total of 8 credits. SAI Multi-City

SAI Summer Combination Programs & Experiences (SCOPE) offer a unique opportunity to combine two distinct SAI summer programs in two different cities for a reduced cost. SAI offers different combinations each year, and in Summer 2018 we are offering six SCOPE programs, all throughout Italy.

Studying abroad in two distinct cities allows students to get to know and become comfortable in two places, while also developing more varied cross-cultural understanding and experiencing their discipline in varying contexts. Students studying in SAI multi-city programs experience different languages, cuisines, architecture, histories, and cultures, all in one program. SAI students in these programs are supported by on-site staff in each location, who help them make a seamless transition between their locations. Students are welcomed in each city, and are offered unique activities that help them to get to know their host city, and build a strong community.

Summer Programs SCOPE A 7 weeks Syracuse & Florence 2018 (3 - 6 + 3 credits) Students begin on the coast in Sicily at Syracuse Academy in the 4 week Summer I term, enrolling in 3 - 6 credits of elective coursework focused on the Mediterranean. Students then travel independently to Florence for the 3 week Summer III term at Florence University of the Arts (FUA), enrolling in one 3 credit elective course, with the option to add a second.
