FLORENCE The beauty and wealth of Florence have attracted visitors throughout the ages, from the Roman Era to modern times. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is the art and architecture of the Renaissance that blossomed there from 1400 – 1600. No other city in Europe reflects the birth and development of modern society more than Florence, through its exquisite examples of art and architecture. The Renaissance or “rebirth”, the revolutionary time that followed the Dark Ages of Europe, changed the world forever by placing importance on the individual and on creativity. The streets of Florence still ring with the vibrant culture that began over 600 years ago; the city center has changed little, combining the elegance and quality of the Renaissance style with a stunning blend of modern design. The lush hills and mountains of Tuscany surround the city, offering themselves for exploration on afternoons or weekends. Though Florence has a rich history, today it is an important center for contemporary art, fashion design, graphics and business. We invite you to experience this contrast of past and present with other students from around the world that come to study in Florence. ROME It has been said that more than a lifetime is needed to experience all that the city of Rome has to offer. It is a city layered with art and antiquities encompassing 2,500 years of history — from the Coliseum, the Imperial Forum, and the Roman Pantheon, to Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museum. For over two thousand years Rome has been a nexus of culture and commerce; a metropolis that has beguiled visitors and locals alike. Rome is a world-class city where innovative thinking thrives in a bustling urban environment, and history comes alive on every street corner. Because of the city’s unique character, Rome offers unparalleled opportunities for the study abroad visitor. Especially for students who are studying Italian Language and Culture, visiting Rome offers the academic adventure of a lifetime.

SIENA Nestled in the rolling hills of the heart of Tuscany, just 70 miles south of Florence, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and then during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. As an important money-lending center, Siena prospered as a city-state and reached its height of importance following the victory against the Florentines at Montaperti in the fall of 1260. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. One can wander through tucked-away squares and tour museums and churches that are home to countless renowned works of Byzantine, Renaissance and High Renaissance art. All SAI participants in Siena are accommodated with local host families. This home stay is an integral and indispensable part of SAI’s Siena Program, offering students the opportunity to make life-long friends, reinforce the language skills acquired during daily lessons and to experience modern Italian culture from “the inside.” Home stays include three meals a day, seven days a week.

SORRENTO Overlooking the Mediterranean at the tip of the Amalfi coast, Sorrento, with its charming cobblestone streets, lively piazza and vibrant cultural scene, is known for its serene beauty, safety and friendliness. This thriving city, considered one of the loveliest In Italy with its lemon groves, flower gardens and nearby beaches, lies close to many nature preserves and historic sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Capri. Sorrento offers learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom with its churches and cathedrals that exemplify a wide range of Italian architectural styles. Sorrento also provides easy access to Rome and Naples for SAI excursions and guided field studies. Historically, Sorrento was a Greek village prior to the Roman Empire when it became a favorite of wealthy Romans whose villas on the sea are now notable ruins. Today, Sorrento’s historical significance is evident and it continues to be a favorite locale for its spectacular natural beauty. SAI Partner in SOrrento Sant’Anna Institute – Sorrento Lingue (SASL)

TURIN In Turino (Torino in Italian) SAI offers a program of study at Torino Study Abroad. The program’s mission is to incorporate the history, art, culture, business, and technology of modern Italy into an academic program of excellence. TorinoSA’s academic programs provide courses instructed in English and taught by American-trained professors with rich and solid individual research expertise reflected in their publications. The school takes full advantage of its location, history and future prospects using the natural, industrial, historical, cultural, social and economic resources that the city of Torino offers. Torino is not only recognized as a forward-thinking city second to none in lifestyle and trendsetting (the ‘slow food’ movement was born here); it is also seen as a Baroque capital, treasuring significant Roman vestiges and commanding a wealth of suburban Savoy royal palaces and their surrounding grounds. Accordingly, TorinoSA offers classes in Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque topics. But given the complex historical background of Torino, TorinoSA also focuses on modern and contemporary Italian society. SAI Partner in TORINO Torino Study Abroad (TorinoSA)
