About Us History

L

anguage Systems International College of English was founded in 1987 with the purpose of providing a multitude of language-related services. Its main goal is to give instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) and test preparation to international students. LSI provides high-quality language programs designed to build students’ skills and self-confidence when communicating in English in either academic or professional situations. Language Systems International provides language instruction that helps international students function successfully in an English-speaking environment, introduces study habits common to those expected at American institutions of higher learning, and assists in the development of critical abilities to think, read, write, listen, and communicate effectively in English.

Language Systems International College of English (LSI), accredited by ACCET, offers English as a Second Language (ESL), Business English, and Conversation programs with a system of three classes taught by three different teachers focusing on specific areas and skills relevant to the program. LSI also offers test preparation programs, like TOEFL®, TOEIC®, GMAT®/GRE®, with scheduled practice tests and teachers skilled in teaching the strategies needed to succeed on the tests. All programs are offered at an affordable cost with convenient schedules at four locations. LSI has special agreements with many colleges in the Los Angeles metropolitan area that allow students to transfer without a TOEFL® score. To enhance the academic program, there are a variety of LSI-sponsored activities that allow students to practice English outside the classroom. LSI also has student advisers who speak many different languages to help students with common questions about school and everyday life in the USA.

Mission Statement The primary focus of Language Systems International is to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) and test preparation to international students in a communicative, student-centered environment.

Vision Statement Our vision is to challenge students from around the world to develop the abilities to think, read, write, listen, and communicate effectively in English. We equip international students with the critical skills needed to function successfully in an Englishspeaking environment, thus helping students to become successful both in their academic and professional endeavors.

Values At Language Systems International, we value diversity and encourage each student to share his or her unique cultural background. We value a learning process in which our students are exposed to a variety of educational methods, and our classes are specially tailored to meet our students’ academic needs and goals. We value mutual understanding and friendly relationships established among students, peers and instructors through classes, outdoor activities, and campus events.

California is the third largest state by area and the largest state by population in the USA. California’s geography ranges from the Pacific Coast in the west to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the east, and from the Mojave Desert in the southeast to the RedwoodDouglas fir forests of the northwest. Along the California coast are several major metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. The state offers something for everyone. Southern California is home to such popular attractions as Disneyland, Hollywood, and the beaches that inspired many movies and TV shows, while the northern part of the state offers the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the hills of San Francisco, and the vineyards of Napa Valley. California is also home to some of America’s most rugged national parks, incredible skiing opportunities, and quiet northern forests.

Testimonials Student’s Name: Mat Country: Poland “Before I got to LA, I couldn’t believe that studying English could be easy and fast. But I changed my mind when I took the ESL morning program at LSI. After that my language skills improved a lot. We studied writing, speaking and grammar every day with really good teachers. We always talked about interesting topics, usually about current issues in the USA. This school taught me not just English, but how to live in America as well.”

Student’s Name: Kubra Country: Turkey “Ever since I came to LSI, my English has improved a lot in the ESL Program. I learned a lot from my teachers; my Reading, Speaking and Grammar classes helped me to speak English properly. In addition to my development in the ESL program, the conversation class highly contributed to my growth. Also, the dance classes and outside-the-classroom activities, such as making a movie, beach parties, and sightseeing, contributed to my English development, and also helped me gain many new friends from different countries. I will never forget my 6 months in Los Angeles at LSI.” Student’s Name: Juhyun Country: Korea “There are many after-school activities at LSI which are great, new experiences for newcomers to Los Angeles. LA itself is a great city to learn English in. The accents of local people are standard and they don’t speak fast. Ethnic diversity is also one of the benefits. LSI is great. Teachers are all kind and very responsive to questions. You can learn reading, listening, speaking and writing according to your level. My English improved a lot since I came to LSI and I realized English is not as difficult as I had imagined.”

Student’s Name: Daisuke Country: Japan “I’m happy to come to LSI because I met many friends who are from other countries. I couldn’t speak English in the beginning, but I can communicate with non-Japanese speakers in English now. You should come to LSI. It’s so much fun in LSI! Your English will improve.”

Enjoy living in Los Angeles!

Housing HOUSING Housing International Student Services provides different types of housing to LSI students.

Homestay: The homestay experience is a unique housing experience for students because it welcomes them into an American home. Students who choose to live with a homestay family will find a safe, welcoming, and comfortable atmosphere in which they can be introduced to American customs, traditions, and family lifestyles. The home allows them to practice their English on a daily basis while enjoying homemade meals in a familiar setting. Homestay families typically plan family outings and guided tours of the city for the student. The homestay program carefully matches students with appropiate families. With the homestay housing choice, we see many friendships form that will last a lifetime.

Dormitories : This is the best option for independent students. The dormitory offers a fully furnished room, either shared (2 people) or private (individual). No meals are provided, but a fully furnished kitchen is available. Most dormitories are within 20 minutes by bus from Language Systems. Each dormitory is located near a bus line which can take the student directly to Language Systems within 20 minutes (no transfers are necessary). Currently we have 5 dormitories: Northeast L.A., Orange County, South Bay L.A., Wilshire and Harvard. All dormitories are conveniently located close to shopping areas.
