If I take the 24 week English Plus Art & Design course, will I have a full portfolio at the end? This depends on whether you are a beginner and how much work you are able to do in your own time. The projects on this course, along with your own work and research, can contribute to and are suitable for building your portfolio. You will need three to four full sketchbooks and at least 25 pieces of work on paper. The teacher will help you with your portfolio and your work. If you have artwork already, this can be built upon to create a final portfolio. Please note that you will need to be committed and produce work outside of the course hours in order to create a full portfolio at the end of a 24 week English Plus Art & Design course. How flexible is this timetable? The timetable is fixed; however, your tutor will encourage you in the areas that interest you. It is very important that you communicate with your teacher so that they can guide you as you study. Projects This is a project-based course and these projects are divided into two areas: skill based projects and creative projects.
Tutorials You will have a tutorial with your teacher usually every two weeks in order to check homework, set new homework and see how the your artwork is progressing on the course. You will be encouraged to discuss the development of your own work with your tutor. Drawing Drawing is the basis of all forms of artistic practice, from painting to sculpture to the various categories of design and it is an art form in its own right. Learning to draw from observation (drawing what you see) will help you to develop not only your drawing skills but also your understanding and appreciation of the world which surrounds you. It will also enable you to communicate your ideas and feelings about your subject matter to others. Why is life drawing so important? Life drawing is an exercise in which you will learn to see, understand and draw proportion, scale, volume, tone and shadows. By practising life drawing your drawing skills will improve, as will your understanding of the concepts involved.
Skills-based projects include activities such as observational drawing, mark-making and materials, the use of sketchbooks in artistic practice, cross-hatching and drawing textures, mixing colours, proportion and scale. You will be asked to then practise these skills for your homework. Creative projects are projects in which you can learn about the creative process and how to respond creatively. You will draw, research and think about the development of your creative practice and then produce your own ideas and own artwork.

Can I start at any point in the course? You can start at the beginning of any four-week (or two-week) block. You can continue to take the course for up to six blocks, after which the course then repeats itself. I want to study Fashion but not the subject that is in the block during the dates I want. Can I do something else? Each four-week block covers a different topic that, when combined, will help you develop a rounded portfolio. The blocks are based around project work, which will give you the opportunity to concentrate on areas you are most interested in. You will be expected to respond to the set briefs and take part in the class discussions. The tutors will not be able to change the topic to suit you. Who are the tutors? The tutors on this course all teach at London College of Fashion, and many of them are combining teaching with working in the fashion industry. They understand how competitive the industry is and will support you in developing your fashion career or advise you on further studies. Will I get to make things? Most of the blocks are design or business based, except for the Simple Garment Making course where you will be using the industrial sewing machines to make a garment from an existing pattern. If I take the 24 week English Plus Fashion course, will I have a portfolio at the end? This depends on whether you are a beginner and how much work you are able to do in your own time. The projects on this course, along with your own work and research, can contribute to a finished portfolio.
