SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL Based on the concept of “Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll”—and the fact that we obviously aren’t going to dedicate an issue to, like, heroin—it was only fitting that we followed up last month’s love and sex special with our annual MUSIC ISSUE! And while I take personal pride in integrating great music

into the mag every month in the form of our calendars, playlists and spotlighted artists, March is when I get to go balls to the wall in the shameless promo department and really push the bands I’m obsessing over—many of which, I promise you, will be blowing up before you know it. In this issue, we’ve included interviews with seven talented acts that make for a damn good listen and an even better live show. Buhu is an Austin band—based pretty much in the Study Breaks

Great Good Fine Ok and Ball Park Music are bands that are both upbeat and badass, despite being from opposite sides of the world, and Sun Club out of Baltimore is, I’d say, a little reminiscent of Oberhofer. HOLYCHILD is a duo producing fun “brat pop” tunes infused with social commentary, while the guy we interviewed from Jukebox the Ghost claims they sound like Nickleback…which isn’t true, swear. And as for July Talk? Their show is unexplainable and

Facebook/avenuefrecords @avefrecords Avenuefrecords.bandcamp.com
OFF THE RECORD ANDREW SCHINDLER
The Co-Founder of Independent Record Label Avenue F Records Talks Music and More SO WHO ALL IS INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT?
It’s me, Zeke Levine, Michael Gonzalez and Marshall Lowry. We’re currently working with three artists, who are featured on our website right now, and we’re about to start working with a fourth. Back in June, we were in the studio recording an album to kind of sample all of our singers. We got a film crew together to record us, so we’re working on getting those videos out to the public.
HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN THIS KIND OF WORK? I am a music projection and marketing double major. I also study jazz guitar, but I’m really interested in the business side of the industry, so I really wanted to try to blend it with the creative aspects of being an artist.
SO WHEN DID THE PROCESS BEGIN?
The idea hit me in May of 2013 when I went to a networking event put on by the Fordham Academy Foundation. They’re the organization that puts on the Grammys, so there were a lot of heavy hitters there, and I got the chance to meet an entertainment lawyer who had represented really big names like James Brown and Prince. He taught me about the basics of the industry and how much it has changed over the years, and it really inspired me to get in there and make something for myself.
SO HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT DOING THAT?
After learning all of that information, I just thought, “Well, I know all of these talented people that I’m in classes with. Why not give it a try?” I just thought about, you know, Def Jam. They were started by two guys in a college dorm room and developed into a major record label. And we’re all performers, so we get to work alongside our artists.
SO WHAT KIND OF MUSIC ARE YOU GUYS INTO? Well, some of us had already been playing in a country music band, and it was great, but we got bored. I knew [there’s an] awesome, underground R&B and hip-hop scene [in Austin] that isn’t that big yet, so we wanted to kind of focus on that. We work a lot with jazz ourselves, so we wanted to find an extension of that in the way we made music.
IS THERE ANYONE YOU WANT TO WORK WITH RIGHT NOW?
Well, we’ve worked with Magna Carda, which has a really awesome vibe. We’d really like to work with The Digital Wild, which has a really cool fusion of hiphop and electronic [with] a heavy guitar feel that we’d like to get with.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES GOING IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?
We went to LA a few weeks ago. It’d be really cool to go out there and be on that scene, but it’s one of those things where we have to see what happens in a year, what happens in six months. A lot of people like to take the mindset of “Where are you going to be in five years?” but it’s all about taking baby steps. For us, it’s all about making achievable goals. We want to sell our album to ten people. We want to sell our album to a hundred people, a thousand people. It’s all about taking it step by step and making great music.

5 STEPS TO MAKE
QUICK CASH FOR SPRING BREAK It’s the most stressful time of the year— and we’re not talking about finals. It’s almost Spring Break, and along with the body image issues you’re suffering due to months spent watching Friends and eating Girl Scout cookies in bed, now you have another critical concern: how to pay for your trip. Well, don’t you fret! You don’t have to sell sperm, plasma or any other bodily fluids to come up with enough cash for a rowdy week. We’ve compiled a few strategies that are only slightly shady, and are guaranteed to have you rolling in dough… with your dignity still (kinda) intact.

1. HOST A PIZZA PARTY It’s 2 a.m. on a Friday, and the bars are emptying out. Imagine: hordes of hammered, hungry people are trying to a catch a cab, when what do they smell? Oh, only the pizzas you’re selling for $7 a slice. You know from experience that drunk = starving, and hey—nothing sells better to drunks than Domino’s. 22

2. BREAK OUT THE GLUE GUN Remember those weird necklaces you made as a kid that you’re pretty sure only your mom loved? Nowadays, people eat that shit up on the street! Just tell them you’re trying to fund your “spiritual walkabout” and they’ll be dying to get their hands on your glorified macaroni art.
whispersinpurple.com
4. RAID YOUR MOM’S CLOSET Vintage clothes are all the rage right now, and judging from what we’ve seen at Buffalo Exchange, people aren’t picky either. Tell them that your gross sweater was worn to a rave in the 1960s or that your fedora was totez a 1940s style staple, and get ready for them to make it rain on you.
maxresdefault.com
3. (AB)USE THE INTERNET Do you know some freaks online will pay $500 for a video of you popping a balloon or crushing cake between your hands – fully clothed?! Hey, to each their own! Now’s your chance to reap the financial benefits of their freaky fetishes while only kinda feeling like a dirty, dirty human being.
cosmopolitan.com
5. PRIORTIZE NECESSARY PURCHASES This is a simple strategy: stop eating. Not only does this solve your beach body problem, but you get to save all that money you would normally spend on life-saving food! Granted, you’ll probably get sick, but FOMO is a bigger bitch than famine, and there’s no room in yo’ budget for that.

THE BROPINION WORDS: GABE
LOVE&SEX
FROM A DUDE’S PERSPECTIVE GABE, A REAL-LIFE
COLLEGE GUY, TELLS US WHAT’S ON HIS MIND EACH MONTH
50 Shades of Green: Taking Control In The Bedroom Have you ever imagined yourself as the main character in your favorite romance movie or book? Better yet, have you ever fantasized about being in “The Red Room of Pain” with Christian Grey? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Studies say that guys between the ages of 18-22 think about sex at least 10 times a day, and I can personally promise that we each have our own wish list full of fantasies. That being said, what if you could be the female version of Mr. Grey and affect your crush in bed like Christian affects Anastasia? Here is the blueprint of what a Ms. Grey would look like in real life, but in honor of St. Patrick’s Day—and the fact we’re all trying to get lucky—let’s call her… Ms. Green.
Like Christian Grey, the first and most important trait a “Ms. Green” can bring to the bedroom is a powerful, prideful presence. You can achieve this by intentionally holding eye contact in a setting that could turn sexual, and to really set the mood, take long pauses to create anticipation of what is to come. The more power you have, the more his reactions will be amplified. The second blood-pumping quality the ideal Ms. Green would have is an air of mystery. Taylor Swift speaks the unfortunate truth when she says “guys only want love if it’s torture.” Being unpredictable keeps us guessing and creates anticipation, which we all know is an extremely addictive feeling. Try carrying different personalities into the bedroom: be very sweet and serving to him one day, and then the next time be extremely outspoken about what you want or want him to do to you. If you can balance both of those qualities, he will be amazed, addicted and—to get back to that St. Paddy’s metaphor—will chase you like a Leprechaun chases a pot of gold. 50 Shades of Grey is a woman’s fantasy, but now it’s time to write your own story…
THREE SHADES OF SEX From taking control to inviting him in, here are different ways to give your guy the green light…
BE BOLD From a guy’s perspective, always making the first move can become a little vanilla. Try taking charge, and make the first move yourself. The bolder your move, the more heightened his reaction will be.
GET HIM TO THE PROMISED LAND When it comes to giving head, don’t be shy, and instead of just using just your mouth, work your mouth and hands at the same time. You will be amazed at how soon he’ll make it to the promised land—and how eager he will be to return the favor.
OPEN INVITATION
background-pictures. picphotos.net
Opening your legs for a man is one of the biggest turn-ons there is. It’s like an invitation for him to come into you. Using the same theory, try wrapping your legs around his waist when you’re on bottom. This is the ultimate green light for guys, so you better hold on tight, because you’re in for one heck of a ride.

WOLF OF WALL STREET, naturally
MYTHS MYTH: Economists are selfish. TRUTH: This is only slightly true (financially). A study done for an article in The New York Times revealed that students who ended up as economics majors had selfish personalities by nature, but it could also be due to the “loss of innocence” taking place when finding out in their economics classes how the economy really runs.
MYTH: Economics is all math and statistics. TRUTH: Nope! Both subjects are used in economics, but neither are a giant focus. Econ actually isn’t math-intensive at all in the undergraduate level at most universities. So all of you who hate math but are interested in economics can breathe a sigh of relief now.
-Zehra Rizvi, 21
Hometown: Katy, TX “Well… econ lands you pretty good jobs. Better I make that money than someone else, right?”
-Zara Mustafa, 20
Hometown: Houston, TX “Econ is a really flexible field that supplements my math background well. Plus, ladies love a man who knows his economics (hopefully).”
-Navin Udiaver, 21 MYTH: Econ and business are pretty much the same, but a business degree is better to have. TRUTH: These subjects actually aren’t as similar as people think. They do have some things in common, but many things learned in economics aren’t taught in business, and vice versa. Also, econ grads often have a higher starting salary than business grads do.
Hometown: Beaumont, TX “I had this great macro teacher my senior year of high school who really KNEW his shit and could explain shit well. He’d cuss in class, call people dicks for not paying attention, would throw a dodge ball at you if you were sleeping. That’s when I knew I wanted to become an economics major in college. God, that man was an inspiration to all.”
-Mary Tietjen, 19
Hometown: Houston, TX “I chose economics because I want to learn why some people become so distraught just from looking at a line on a graph. I also want to be the next Wolf of Wall Street. I don’t have money on my mind; I’d do it for the love. I just want a comfortable living.”

Facebook/yourbuhuband @yourbuhuband Yourbuhuband.com
We took a coffee break with Jeremy Rogers and Clellan Hyatt—two of the charming gents behind this post-pop/ electronic/ party rock trio—and then met them all downtown on a sunny Sunday for a pretty fun photo shoot…
How did you come up with the name Buhu? JEREMY: I was just trying to come up with a hundred different band names, and of course there’s a band out there named Boo Hoo— that’s too cute and easy. So I did the Google search [for Buhu], and no band had it, but the first thing that came up was Urban Dictionary, and I totally forgot about what Buhu actually meant: in the nineties, it was a term for back-up hook-up. You’ve got your boo, and you got your buhu. We’re your back-up, hook-up band. You don’t want to tell your girlfriend about us, nuh-uh.
So how would you describe your sound? CLELLAN: Some of the newer stuff is definitely hitting on the Talking Heads. JEREMY: Some of it’s also just getting really rock ‘n’ roll too. Some of it’s really electronic. It’s all over the place, all the time. We’re still so young, we’re still honing in.
38
MARCH 2015 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
CLELLAN: I try to rock as hard as possible at all times and bring the energy…swing my head around…sweat a whole lot. JEREMY: Totally. The beats are really fuckin’ fun, and the bass lines are great, and the melodies are always really accessible. Our live show is going to be so different after the [Mostly Midwest Tour]. Once we get back, it’ll be like a whole new band from our perspective. There’s three of us, but we’re running like 20 different things instrument-wise. That’s how much sound we’re putting out as a three-piece.
Is there anything crazy or catastrophic or funny that’s happened during a live show? CLELLAN: I mean, [Jeremy] pooped his pants one time… JEREMY: It was my birthday! It’s my birthday, and I’ll poop if I want to. CLELLAN: [singing] It’s my birthday, and I’ll poop if I want to… JEREMY: Alright, good poop jokes.
So your album’s not out yet, but tell us about your four-song EP… JEREMY: I think how they were made—the fact that they were all filmed and recorded at the same time with each instrument in a different location—it’s really meant to be all seen and heard together.
[The four-track cinemat on YouTube] should be watched from the beginning to the end. It’s a live video EP. It’s very weird—a very avant-garde thing we did. CLELLAN: A heavy cat influence. JEREMY: Lots of kitties. What’s crazy is we had to record guitars up in trees and stuff like that. I’m in this giant tree-bush fuckin’ thing, and JP [Mendez] was crammed inside of a refrigerator with his synth bass. I’m getting a live tattoo, and he’s recording bass at the same time in the tattoo shop. You gotta see it. It’s weird.
How did Buhu come to be, by the way? How did this relationship blossom? JEREMY: Just partyin’—we were so fucking drunk on Thanksgiving Day. Actually, I met JP first. We got together, started playing music, started writing songs, and then Thanksgiving Day rolls around. Clellan rolls [into the bar], and we’re all shithoused, and he’s all shithoused, and we just threw down nineties jams. We were just dancing our asses off and took so many shots. CLELLAN: So it wasn’t until the end of the night when I was like, “So man, you play music at all? I fuckin’ play drums, man. Let’s fuckin’ jam.” There it was. JEREMY: It worked. He met JP, and we all got together and we wrote a song. And it was fuckin’ great. We’re doin’ this.

What can people expect from a Buhu show?
MUSIC SPECIAL: ONES TO WATCH
Facebook/holychildmusic @HOLYCHILD Holychild.com
HOLYCHILD We had a three-way…ya know, call…with the lovely Louie Diller and Liz Nistico of this lively “Brat Pop” duo
On Facebook, your list of influences ranges from Outkast to Hemingway. How do groups and individuals like this play a role in your songwriting process? LOUIE: I guess with Outkast…our album will be out later this year, and there’s a pretty strong hip-hop influence with the beats in production. Liz, with lyrics or visuals, has been inspired by [Scott F.] Fitzgerald and Wes Anderson. With melodies, honestly, we could toss Katy Perry on there. [It’s just to illustrate] how broad our influences are and how we condense [them] into this thing we call brat pop. LIZ: [Brat pop] is essentially experimental pop—often sarcastic. It’s seeped in social commentary.
So what can people expect from a HOLYCHILD show? LOUIE: A high-energy dance party that will challenge the way you think about your roles in society. I know that’s kind of crazy. It’s a party, it’s fun, it’s kind of a spectacle, but there’s a lot of social commentary littered throughout the lyrics, the presentation. You’ll be singing along and getting down…[We want] to bring people into our world through accessible music, but try and say something
while we’re at it—challenge the status quo, our roles in this world. We’re not going to be preachy, but there is a message. LIZ: It’s really fun. You have to come this year!
and it’s way more hit or miss. With Liz, it was right on. LIZ: You should have me DJ your bar mitzvah… LOUIE: This is left-field Liz coming out.
What do you want from the audience? LIZ: When I get onstage, my goal is to connect with people—kind of like sex, but I don’t want to use that analogy. If I get onstage and I’m not making eye contact with people and I’m not seeing into people and they’re not seeing into me, I have a horrible show. My goal is to make people dance and have very strong connections with them. That’s what we like with audiences: people who are pretty open-minded, who connect with us and are able to get down.
So you two met in college. Did you immediately know you were music soulmates? LOUIE: It was pretty quick. We talked about music when we first met, and then we shared playlists with each other. Liz, I think you sent me your playlist first, and it was huge and awesome and crazy. The quality…it was crazy to get a playlist from someone I didn’t really know that had so many songs that were awesome. Usually I do that with people
LIZ: We met in a creative place. He was the hired musician for my dance class. We talked about music right away…it just made sense. Louie first commissioned me to paint this rehearsal space, and we just started jamming.
How does your relationship differ on and off stage? LIZ: It’s pretty transient. We’re pretty open, we’re feeling pretty free. Louie is so talented and such a nice person, it’s great to be around him. LOUIE: No one’s as gracious and compassionate and hardworking as Liz. LIZ: I’m glad it worked out. I’ve had partners it didn’t work out as well with, so it’s nice working together—there’s not one person who’s working harder than the other.

JULY TALK After catching the rowdy Canadian rockers’ insane live show three times in 2014, we chatted on the phone with the lovely Leah Fay
How would you describe your sound? I’m trying to not say the things that people always write. I guess there’s definitely a blues influence on the first album. There’s automatic duality and the opposition between Peter and me. And it’s rock ‘n’ roll. And we love pop music—Josh is amazing, he’s responsible for a lot of the hooks. We’re not ashamed to say we’re thinking about pop. I think that [our music is something] you either love or you hate. I’ve said this before in interviews and regretted it because it’s kind of dumb, [but] you know how you either love oysters or you think they’re disgusting? That’s what our band is like.
Your live show is pretty insane. Last year at SXSW there was biting and hairpulling, and you applied lipstick to audience members and poured honey in their mouths. Is this all choreographed ahead of time or is it improv? I feel like improv is putting more weight on it than it actually is. Really it’s just kind of chaos and spontaneity. It’ll be influenced by the rooms that we’re playing, and the audience there, and what we’ve 40

found driving through gas stations in Georgia on the way down. I think we’ve found that that’s the best way to stay excited—to offer something that’s like a rock show, but like…animal style. Have you ever had In-NOut? We’re doing it animal style.
You interact a lot with your bandmates on stage—particularly Peter. How would you describe your relationship, both on and off stage? I’d say it’s similar in that we’re brutally honest with each other onstage—what’s working and what’s not. We’re brutally honest offstage as well, which lends itself well to songwriting. I’d say we’re probably less violent with each other offstage—we’re not normally hitting each other or biting each other. That being said, a couple of us in the band are very excitable drunks. We’re the people at parties who are standing on furniture and jumping up and down.
It’s been said that you’re pretty good at karaoke. What’s your goto karaoke song? Björk, “It’s Oh So Quiet”—it’s a cover she did. I also really like doing “The Boys of Summer” by Don Henley, and it usually ends with me climbing on top of any bar or surface I can get on top of.
Do y’all have any pre-show rituals or traditions? No. I tried to make us all hug and have a moment because I’ve seen other bands do that, and I think we did it once and played an awful show. So we’re all excited to go onstage and jumping up and down. I’m like, “You guys wanna a take a moment—” “NO!” They won’t let me.
How is it different playing Canada, where you’re from, versus the US? Well, we’ve toured the shit out of Canada. It feels kind of like seeing family members and familiar faces who come and bring their parents and their brothers and their veterinarians. Touring in the States, we haven’t been down there as much and we’re not established yet. It’s fun because the difference is that we get down there and we get to reintroduce ourselves to a new crowd every night and do something to a room full of people. Whether they love it or hate it, we get to make a first impression.
Do you have any advice for SXSW patrons? Someone peed on our van last year, and I caught them doing it. Don’t pee on bands’ vans. It’s not nice.

during a vocal break in the last song of the set, my voice cracked so heinously that the crowd cringed. So, I plan on staying hydrated.
From the musician perspective— since we’re sure you’ve been to your fair share of festivals—what advice do you have for SXSW patrons? Don’t feel like you have to see everything—pick your battles and pick your shows. SXSW can kick your ass if you aren’t careful.
What can people expect from a Jukebox the Ghost show? What do you want the audience to bring? We like it to be a party when we play. So leave your self-conscious, crossed-armed, pretentious BS at the door and come dance with us. That or an audience so tweaked out that they all writhe on the floor in psychedelic ecstasy while we play ballads.
What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened during a show? Once we had a bunch of people in pig costumes inexplicably show up on stage for a song, dance their faces off, and then disappear.
Do you have any pre-show traditions or superstitions? We just ask anyone near the green room before a show who might hear animal screams and hysterical laughter not to come a-knockin’.
Who are y’all listening to right now? If you were standing next to a jukebox (the ghost), what would you put on? I’ve been listening to a lot of Dave Brubeck lately—also lots of ‘90s throwback stuff. I gave an interview recently where the interviewer had never heard of Presidents Of The United States (band), and this made me sad. So right now, I would play their song “Peaches” on repeat.

Dean Hanson of the “pop/crackle/snap” band from Down Under kindly answered our questions via email (which, btw, accounts for the Australian spellings)
What artists or bands would you say you’re similar to? It’s hard to say. We have such a diverse range of influences amongst the five of us, and they always seem to pop up in different places across our records. They range from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to The Roots and many, many more.
What’s the story behind your band name? The band name is a play on words from the saying “ball park figure.” Years ago, Sam tried to register that as a myspace band name, but it was already taken. Ball Park Music was the next best thing.
How is it different performing at home in Australia versus America? We have a much bigger following at home than we do in the USA, and that’s what makes performing in the US so exciting. It’s great knowing that a lot of people coming to see us are losing their Ball Park gig virginity, and we get to make a first impression. We’ve been practis-

What’s the craziest or weirdest thing that’s ever happened during a show?
The first song many people in the US heard of yours was “It’s Nice to Be Alive”—are you all really that positive?
One day performing in Melbourne on a cold winter night, a man decided he would get naked and crash the stage. Shortly after he jumped on the stage, security intervened and ejected him from the venue. My favourite part was that the door that security escorted him through backs directly onto an alleyway behind the venue. The young gent never had a chance to collect his clothes before he was forced outside in the freezing cold.
I think it’s fair to say we are all optimistic people. I think that has helped us a lot over the course of our career. Sometimes on tour, you will travel for hours to arrive at a venue or a gig that wasn’t quite what you were expecting, and it always helps to look on the bright side and take the good over the bad.
What can people expect from a Ball Park Music show? What do you want the audience to bring in terms of energy/attitude/vibe/narcotics? (Just kidding about that last one… maybe.) We are big believers in providing a super entertaining performance no matter the circumstance. We are all about everyone having a good time and enjoying our tunes with whomever else is in the room. We want our crowds to be energetic and not afraid to have a sing-along and a bit of a dance. As for that last one, we encourage people to enjoy the show however they feel necessary—as long as they are digging it, so are we.
Do you have any pre-show traditions or superstitions? We always make a Mighty Ducks-style huddle, stack our hands, and on the count of three, say something that might be meaningful to that gig. This always manages to lift the spirits.
Who are y’all listening to right now? Any favorite artists or songs? An Australian artist called #1 Dads released our collectively favourite record of 2014. Check out his song “So Soldier” featuring Ainslie Wills.

MUSIC SPECIAL: ONES TO WATCH
Facebook/sunclubband @sunclubband Sunclubband.com
SUN CLUB Fresh off a short tour and stoked for SX, Shane McCord—aka Triscuit, if we’re using rap personas—of this Baltimore band chatted it up with us on a pretty fun phone call
The name of your EP is Dad Claps at the Mom Prom—what’s the story behind that album title? And while we’re at it, how’d you come up with the name Sun Club for your band? Our friend Chad, he told us all these random band names and album names he came up with. We thought he was the coolest dude in the world—and he IS the coolest guy in the world—and he showed us Dad Claps at the Mom Prom. It’s actually kind of clap-swatting…a really firm clap…really focused. And we named our EP that. Until very recently, all our songs were named off refrigerator magnets. We just rearranged refrigerator poetry. That’s how we came up with “Beauty Meat” …“Repulsive Chocolate”…Sun Club came from that.
it, you love it, and like a year later, you’re like, “Oh, how did I like this so much?”… That’s part of an album, you know, that’s where you’re at when you record it. That EP is where we were last November. Even with the same songs, [now] I’m playing them completely different. It’s mostly production we want to change. We just recorded a fulllength [album], and we’re super psyched about it. It should be coming out in April or May. We finally have a mix that’s pretty close to where it needs to be; there’s a lot of reverb on it.
They’ve been my mom’s favorite band since we were alive, basically. I grew up with it and hated it when I was younger. Then I started listening to them again and was like, “This is incredible!”
What are you listening to right now?
You can’t change it! When you have a kid, you’ve got a solid two, three years to give them a nickname. You got some wiggle room.
Definitely Talking Heads and Beach Boys. Been listening to some Death Grips— they’re really good. Fionn Regen—he’s a folk artist, absolutely the best songwriter ever. I’ve been listening to Joe Meek, this badass guy from the ‘60s. The majority of stuff I listen to is local. Goblin Mold…that’s my roommate. They just broke up, but they were so amazing. Now he’s in a new band called Sherman Whips, which is really good too. Basically as far as modern music goes, local music.
What bands would you say your sound is similar to?
What can people expect from a Sun Club show?
Song-wise, some people have been saying Animal Collective and Talking Heads—a more modern version. Which I think is sick, because those are two of our favorite bands. I don’t know if we’re at the point like “We sound like the Talking Heads”—and we don’t really want to sound like them, but it’s an influence. They’re my favorite band ever.
Ya know, probably a shitshow. We bounce around a lot…have a lot of energy. We don’t play our songs very perfectly. If the sound is good enough, the reverb will be pumping pretty hard.
Is it hard naming an album? It seems like a lot of pressure, like naming a kid…
What’s your favorite Sun Club song? Maybe “Summer Feet”—we recorded it over a year ago. When you first write

MUSIC SPECIAL: ONES TO WATCH
Facebook/greatgoodfineok @greatgoodfineok Greatgoodfineok.com
GREAT GOOD FINE OK John Sandler, one half of the Brooklyn duo behind some incredibly catchy tunes, answers a couple questions for us in this delightful email interview…
WHAT ARTISTS OR BANDS WOULD YOU SAY YOU’RE SIMILAR TO? Michael Jackson with a dash of CHVRCHES
What’s the story behind your band name? Great Good Fine Ok was a name I came up with years ago and was saving for the right project. I can’t remember how it popped into my head, but when we wrote that first song, I knew that the name and the music were a perfect match.
You’re a duo and must spend roughly a million hours together in the studio, playing, planning, etc. How would you describe your relationship? Are you brothers, soulmates, archenemies…? Telepathic life partners
From the musician perspective— since we’re sure you’ve been to your fair share of festivals—what advice do you have for SXSW patrons? Make a plan for which bands you want to see, and do whatever you need to do to make those happen. It’s such an intense, crazy scene that if you “wing it,” you’ll end up missing everything. You’ll probably see a lot of other cool stuff, but…maybe you’ll see nothing. Also, eat BBQ a lot and dance a lot.
MARCH 2015 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
I use a vocal effect pedal to add some slight double/reverb/delay in a few spots. One show in Washington DC, the pedal started recording the show and instantly playing it back, so after we finished the song, the song kept playing with me singing! It was horrible. It must have seemed like we were lip-syncing the whole thing—band AND vocals. We just stood there confused as the song we just played kept playing. That was probably the craziest so far...
Do you have any pre-show traditions or superstitions? We do a band “hands in the middle” chant type of thing, and Tristan usually gives me a short but delightful shoulder massage.
What can people expect from a Great Good Fine Ok show? We bring a ton of energy and passion. Performing is our favorite thing to do, and we give it everything. Dancing, keytars, sparkles, confetti and lights are a few of the things that you’ll find. We want an audience to bring huge energy and dance their asses off. We very much work with and feed off a crowd.

QUIZ
WORDS: LARISSA GARCIA-BAAB
AH, ST. PADDY’S DAY Extreme cultural significance aside (Wikipedia it, y’all), for a good portion of Americans—and, obviously, college students—it’s really all about the party. But how should you celebrate this glorious holiday come March 17th? Should you “go green” (if you know what we mean) and then consume circa eight boxes of Lucky Charms, or should you grab a Guinness or two and try to get lucky? We’ve compiled a handy flow chart to help you figure it out! Just promise us one thing: whatever you end up doing, at the end of the night be sure to make a nice, classy Irish exit.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BINGE DRINKING? WHAT ABOUT IRISHMEN? I’ve experimented with one of them
ARE YOU A COLLEGE STUDENT? Nope–I'm livin' that 9-to-5 life
I’ve experimented with both of them
Yep, & will be for 6 years, God willing!
ST. PATRICK’S DAY IS ON A TUESDAY. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? Club goin’ up on a Tuesday!
Ugh, I have an 8am on Wednesdays
DRINKING! Let’s be honest, there was only ever one correct answer to this question, and that’s donning emerald everything, forgetting the number of Irish car bombs and green beers you’ve ingested, and running around looking for attractive people to pinch. Whether you’re actually Irish, you’re drowning your mid-semester sorrows, or you’re just using Saint Paddy as an excuse to party, this March 17th, you should be out looking for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow… predominantly so you can buy more beer. COVER ME. I’M GOING IN.
HOROSCOPES
BABY, WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? ARIES Calm down on the hickies, you nasty. Your concealer hasn’t been fooling anyone… for the past month.
TAURUS A pregnancy scare is in your near future. Unless you want to take an unplanned trip to Planned Parenthood, start utilizing those Trojans taking up space in your dresser drawer.
GEMINI Beware, Gemini. You will start getting roasted in the GroupMe chat next week. Try not to say anything dumb for a while.
CANCER No Cancer, your near-empty tank of gas will not “easily last until [you] find another gas station” on your way to the beach. Don’t be a cheapskate; gas costs less than guacamole at Chipotle.
LEO You will soon lose a significant amount of followers on Instagram and gain a significant amount
of weight. The takeaway: relax with all the food pictures.
VIRGO That person you’re talking to only texts you after 2 a.m., and your only “dates” have involved a drive-thru. Face it, Virgo: this ain’t love. Ditch ‘em and find someone better.
LIBRA Consider getting your life together, and quit hitting up the club every night. Open a textbook— not just a tab at the bar.
BY THE NUMBERS:
ST. PATRICK’S DAY CAPRICORN Cut it off with your FWB ASAP. They’re planning on having the awkward “What are we?” talk with you. Run…while you still can.
AQUARIUS Your significant other will ask to see your phone tomorrow. Erase any incriminating evidence.
PISCES Quit being blinded by love: your S.O. is the absolute worst. Do yourself a favor and end it now.
