EDITOR’S NOTES

SAM SUMPTER EDITOR

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU I couldn’t help it, really. Not only because of the obvious pun (MAY! Like the month! And the auxiliary verb! Eh? eh?!), but because—and this is complete assumption on my part, given the fact I barely know the difference between Star Wars, Star Trek and, like, Star magazine—“May the force be with you!” just sounds like FOUNDER: Gal Shweiki PUBLISHERS: Steve Viner, Daniel Stone VICE PRESIDENT: David Reimherr

hella awesome encouragement. Which, as you take finals…or cross the stage into the real world…or just bus tables for the summer at Taco Cabana…you could use a lot of, I imagine. So here we are. And now, allow me to introduce the excellent content I’m going to May-the-force down your throat this month. First up comes our annual May cover story, “The Next Big Thing,” for which we showcase groups of students are straight-up killing it in their own way. From designers to humanitarians, we’ve got Texas up-and-comers covered via stories of students whose schedules consist of more than the typical study-

party-sleep-class combo. They’re really making us all look bad, is really what we’re saying. *Takes long pull of Coors Light at 10 a.m.* Damn overachievers. And, in honor of the fact it’s officially festival season—and that we’re, like, really obsessed with, like,

really good tunes—we’ve dedicated a special section in this issue to music. (Yes…again.) Think the

best fests to add to your summer bucket list, six amazing artists and bands you’ll love (especially JPNSGRLS *insert heart-eyes emoji here*), and—per the usual—10 songs we can’t stop playing. So if you need me this month, I can be found planning my own festival itinerary, listening to my new Oh, and Googling the difference between all the aforementioned Star stuff. Yoda…Spock…Kim Kardashian? Eh, whatever.

BASEBALL

FLYING HIGH By Stephen Whitaker

Roadrunners are not known for taking flight, but this season the Roadrunner baseball team is looking to change the textbooks. UTSA flew up the Conference USA rankings to the No. 4 position after the series of games the team played over Easter weekend. The Roadrunners won two of their three games against Florida International, pushing the team to a 7-5 conference record and good for behind conference leaders Rice, Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic. Three of those teams were ranked in the NCAA baseball poll — Rice (12) and Florida Atlantic (17) — as of April 7. As the conference season neared the halfway mark, the Roadrunners found themselves ahead of Old Dominion, a participant in last year’s NCAA tournament, and Southern Miss, a perennial contender to punch a ticket to a NCAA regional. With series still left to play, including games against Rice and Louisiana Tech, UTSA remained focus on reaching the conference tournament. However, this season, the team wants a higher seed than the No. 7 position. In 2013, during their only campaign in the Western Athletic Conference, the Roadrunners entered the conference tournament as the seventh seed. UTSA worked its way to the championship game where the team shocked Dallas Baptist and earned a ticket to the NCAA tournament. MAY 2015 | 6 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

Last season UTSA came in as the seventh seed again, this time for their first Conference USA tournament. The Roadrunners advanced to the final where they eventually fell to Rice. If the Roadrunners can win enough games to earn a No. 4 seed in the conference tournament they could receive an at-large bid based on the strength of Conference USA. Making the NCAA Tournament may be easier than kicking another bird off the top of the conference — the Rice Owls. MEN’S GOLF In their last tournament before the Conference USA Championship, the men’s golf team competed in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational. The Roadrunners earned a 10th-place finish in a tournament that featured seven teams ranked in the top 50. J.J. Lindsey led the Roadrunners with a scorecard of 77-71-80 for a total of 228. His performance was good for 29th on the individual scoreboard. WOMEN’S GOLF The women’s golf team held a matchup with Texas and Baylor at Briggs Ranch Golf Club — the same course that will host the NCAA Central Regional in May. Baylor won the two-day event with a total score of 571. Texas was second with 581 followed by UTSA with 601. Nikki Long was the top Roadrunner as she finished in a tie for fourth place on the individual board with a 1-over-par 145 over the two days. MAY 2015 | 7 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

Pics From a Wonderful Week We AlmostKinda-Sorta Remember ‘Twas the best of times, ‘twas the worst of times (just kidding about that second part), We’re not sure whether we consumed more free drinks, discovered more new bands, acquired more wristbands, waited in more lines, walked more miles or spent more days hungover after it was all over, but—as it is every year—it was a hell of a way to spend Spring Break…

HOW TO 5 STEPS FOR

SUCCESSFULLY LIVING ON YOUR OWN Now that you’ve graduated and achieved what is formally known as grown-ass adult status, it’s time to get yourself out the cramped apartment you share with four other peeps and move onto greener pastures—namely, your own place. It may seem scary, but living alone has plenty of perks…like a pants-optional policy, primarily. So sign that lease, and get ready to start living the dream! Thankfully, we’re here to show you how…

youtube.com

1. LOCK YOUR DOORS You don’t have anyone to hide in the closet with (or just outrun) if an ax murderer barges in anymore, so make sure your doors are locked. And you should probably board up your windows. And you know what, just stop going outside altogether.

boompopmedia.com

2. GET HOT You can do whatever kind of workout you want now, because there’s no one to judge you for finally trying out the Carmen Electra Aerobic Strip Tease DVD you bought back in ’07. Supermodel status, here you come!

country.barrel.etsy.com

4. DECORATE Living alone means you’ve got no one to blame that Bob Marley poster on, so get on Pinterest and make some pom-pom power moves. Having your own place means you can decorate it however you want: handpainted frames, paper mache, chevron-print EVERYTHING. And don’t forget mason jars. Mason jar the hell out of that shit.

3. THEN EAT YOUR FEELINGS You have an entire kitchen to yourself now. Just let that sink in. Think of all the Doritos you can fit in there. And the freezer? SO MUCH HOT POCKET POTENTIAL!

slate.com

5. GET AN INTERNET CONNECTION How else will you possibly get any form of human contact? Make sure you have a good Wi-Fi signal so you can spend all morning creeping on your best friend’s boyfriend’s sister’s best friend’s engagement photos at top speed. See, living solo is simple. SPOTLIGHT

Tess Hellebrekers, 21

Hometown: Austin, TX Major: Computational Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering Student Tess Hellebrekers Gives Us Deets on Her Bionic Buddy CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOUR MAJOR IS? Well, I am a computational biomedical engineer, which basically means a blend of electrical engineering, software, biology, some chemistry and a whole lot of other stuff that sounds scary. I am interested in robotics, and while there are many majors that will prepare you, I chose this one in order to incorporate systems modeled after human physiology. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN THIS KIND OF TECHNOLOGY? I didn’t know much about robotics specifically before I got to college. Biometrics in general always amazes me though. DESCRIBE THE PROCESS OF WORKING ON THIS PROJECT, FOR WHICH YOU SET UP A REMOTE WEB INTERFACE FOR A MEKA ROBOT AT GEORGIA TECH LAST SUMMER. The first step in any (good) research project is to be completely overwhelmed. Then, it is all about slowly learning about smaller parts and becoming familiar with the technology. By the end, it was hard to believe I had started knowing almost nothing about it!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH THE ROBOT, CURI? My favorite part about Curi is the fact that an entire team of students worked together to experiment, learn and improve different aspects. It is unrealistic to expect one person to 100% understand everything about Curi. Each student specialized in his or her area of interest, and it came together very smoothly in the SIMlab at Georgia Tech. We ended up programming her to teach children with special needs how to teach others to play soccer. SO GIVEN THIS TECHNOLOGY, WHAT IS YOUR STANCE ON THE POSSIBILITY OF A ROBOT APOCALYPSE? I definitely still enjoy all the books and movies on robot apocalypse. But realistically, we still have a ways to go before we can match the Hollywood perspective. So as long as the robots we develop continue to help out and NOT overtake the planet, I will definitely support and participate in their research.

LOVE&SEX

FROM A DUDE’S PERSPECTIVE GABE, A REAL-LIFE

COLLEGE GUY, TELLS US WHAT’S ON HIS MIND EACH MONTH Making it Facebook Official: How to Go From “Just this Girl” to Girlfriend Have you ever been head over heels for a guy who really seemed to like you but never took the step to make you his girlfriend? Here is the inside scoop on how to graduate from the talking phase and become “Facebook Official.” There are plenty of advantages to being single—at least as far as men are concerned. As a guy who for the last year and a half has made it a goal to stay out of serious relationships, I have learned how and when to pull back on the reins to avoid “catching feelings.” That being said, I just recently settled down with a girl for the first time in a long time, which got me thinking: what makes guys commit? The good news is that what may seem like an impossible struggle is simply a matter of leverage.

to go around. If you want to be treated respectfully, the first step to doing that is respecting yourself, and that shows selfworth. The second point takes a little more effort but can be the deciding factor in whether or not he wants to be in a relationship or continually hover in the talking phase. Each relationship is different, but as a general rule, girls get emotionally attached before guys do and naturally give themselves away in an attempt to win the guy’s heart. The key is to keep your emotions and feelings in check, and cover up the urge to display your affections toward him. He will, in turn, try harder for those signs of affection, and—as a result—will start to become emotionally invested in you. Us guys don’t get emotionally involved a lot, but when we do, it’s a serious thing. When you start to feel him opening up to you emotionally, it will be safe to let your guard down and free your emotions, because you two are well on your way to becoming Facebook Official.

3 EASY WAYS TO SHOW HIM YOU ARE GIRLFRIEND MATERIAL BEFRIEND THE BROS First impressions are a big deal, so be sure and compliment his friends, and try and show interest in their lives, too. If everything goes well, you could be seeing a lot more of them.

TAKING CARE Men are really simple creatures: we love food and affection. But because we are in college (and away from our mothers), we tend to run low in both of these categories. Cooking him a meal or giving a back massage can easily slingshot you into cuffing department.

PUBLIC RELATIONS Men desire to be respected. When it comes to going out in public, make it your goal to make all of the other guys in the room wish you were on their arm, but make it clear to everyone in the room that he has your affections. If you can make him feel like the man in public, he will follow by making you his woman on Facebook.

There are two keys to pushing us guys over the hill and into a relationship. One is for you to communicate that you are worth settling down with, and two is to get him emotionally invested in you—both of which are much simpler than you may think. Showing that you’re worth it is really as simple as not giving yourself away early in the process, especially in the physical sense. Guys don’t value girls who are easy, because there are plenty of those girls

THE ENTERTAINER

FIND MORE INFO!

HOW DID AFTERDARK ENTERTAINMENT GET STARTED? WHAT’S YOUR ROLE? Omar Dauwood came up with the idea in college back in 2009 with likeminded friends who wanted to bring the best of the best performers to the area. Since then, it has grown to be a household name in Central Texas. Now Omar owns The Marc in San Marcos, a 1,000-person club on the square, along with AfterDark Entertainment. I have been given the opportunity to run AfterDark as the Street Team Director and Sales Director. He is my mentor/boss/big-brother figure, and we have grown to establish a working relationship that benefits us both—as well as the companies. I create and execute marketing strategies and [provide] that information to the 50-member AfterDark street team.

WHAT MAKES AFTERDARK ENTERTAINMENT AWESOME?

JONATHAN RUIZ, 21

Hometown: Austin, TX Major: Marketing

We are based in San Marcos, and [students and people] love to party with us, because we consistently throw top-notch concerts with huge production and [bring] the best up-and-coming—as well as premier worldwide touring DJs—to The Marc. The promoters on the team (mainly college students and individuals who love music) are willing to work together and promote any show we have every day of the week, [and that] makes AfterDark an amazing company!

IS THERE A SPECIFIC CONCERT THAT WAS PARTICULARLY MEMORABLE? During South by Southwest, we put on an unofficial free showcase with DJ Carnage and friends that included Migos, G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, Denzel Curry, Post Malone and more. About two weeks in advance, when we announced the show, we had so many RSVPs that the ticketing website crashed within a few minutes from so much web traffic on the ticket link page. Come show day, the lined started forming at 2 p.m., and when doors opened at 7 p.m., we almost instantly hit capacity. By 9:30, the fire marshal shut us down because it was over capacity! It was crazy; we had minutes to move the show. The rest of the night went on without a problem! Overcoming obstacles and making the fans happy is always the most important thing, and we did our absolute best to do so that night.

WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL? To create my own company that specializes in artist management and tour the US and beyond! It’s all about the music, but the best artists usually have the best team behind them! MAY 2015 | 34 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

MIKE RAMOS, 24

Hometown: Brownsville, TX Major: Retail Merchandise Management

MIKE RAMOS OF STYLE LINE VIDA & CO. TALKS DESIGN, INSPIRATION AND NICK CANNON’S APPROVAL...

HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR VIDA & CO.? The idea from Vida & Co. was born out of inspiration. I felt like this generation needed a generator, and I wanted to create something that would be here for a very long time. I always loved art growing up, so when I first had the vision, I got to work immediately.

The word “Vida” translates to life. I decided to name the company this because I wanted to stay true to my Hispanic side, and I also feel like it is a very powerful word. The “& Co.” is kind of like a tribute to all the people I am surrounded by—all the people who have been supporting us and helping the movement grow.

My design aesthetic can be described as very clean, simple…influenced by comfort, but with a modern twist. I design according to how I feel: I will design a collection that is all black, and then I will make something that is very colorful. I like to surprise my clients.

I am heavily inspired by the people around me; they are all so creative and so hungry for success and change. I do my best thinking in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep, because everything is just so quiet. Those moments away from the computer, away from my phone, and away from the world…those are when most of the ideas flow. Sometimes I design four or five different shirts or jackets in my head before I even start sampling out anything.

WHO ARE YOU DESIGNING FOR? I am currently working with HERO, a California rapper signed to Nick Cannon’s Ncredible label. I am also working on a few deals with boutiques from Canada, New York and California.

WHAT DOES THE NAME OF YOUR COMPANY MEAN?

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AESTHETIC?

WHAT ARE YOU INFLUENCED AND INSPIRED BY?

WHAT SUCCESS AND RECOGNITION HAVE YOU HAD? In the first year, we have had recognition from all over the place. We were the runner-up to represent the city of San Antonio with Raw Artists. I have also received recognition from Nick Cannon’s label. We have worked with artists like Pro-Era, TDE, HERO, Carlton Zeus, WhyJae and KWYK, as well as many very talented artists in the city of San Antonio and the state of Texas.

WHAT’S THE ULTIMATE GOAL? The ultimate goal is to create a lifestyle that will live forever. I want to be one of the people responsible for shifting the culture in San Antonio and the whole state of Texas. I don’t like comparing myself to anybody else, but I want to be able to reach Ralph Lauren or Alexander Wang level. I know the standards are high, but I believe in myself and I believe in Vida. WITH THE MAC&MIC PROJECT, HUMANITARIAN, ENVIRONMENTALIST AND ANIMAL-LOVER MIA WRIGHT IS ON A MISSION TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE…

DESCRIBE THE MAC&MIC PROJECT. The Mac&Mic project provides aid and custom care packages for man, animal and nature! No matter who, what or where, Mac&Mic is always happy to lend a helping hand...or paw... to conserve the lives and natural resources of Earth.

WHAT’S THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME OF YOUR PROJECT? The guiding principle behind Mac&Mic is “To love all, no matter how big or small.” The name Mac&Mic commemorates this principle: “Mac” originates from “macro,” meaning big. “Mic” derives from “micro,” meaning small. This specific care project means to contribute to all Earth, whether it’s a six-foot man, a handful of pups, or a sprouting tree. Everyone and everything is a big part of what Earth is. Some of the biggest gifts come in the smallest packages.

WHO HAVE YOU HELPED AND HOW HAVE YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE? The Mac&Mic project has fed and clothed the homeless citizens of South Texas, comforted and nursed injured stray and sheltered animals, and tended to San Antonio’s plant life. I’ve made a difference by daring to be different. I didn’t want to just help one living aspect of Earth, but all three of them together. I’ve gotten smiles, wags and stump (a stump is a tree dap, lol) from some of Texas’ most colorful characters because I believe that

the whole world is worth saving. The Mac&Mic project wouldn’t be if it weren’t for them.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THE PROJECT? As a biology major and human being, I realized that man needs nature and animals to survive. They are a very large part of what allows a human to live on this planet, but are they treated and acknowledged in 21st-Century society as humanity’s allies or enemies? I decided not only to respond to my rhetorical question, but to act on my beliefs and moral character through the implementation of the Mac&Mic project. I wanted to be a friend, not a foe, to all of God’s creations, to love every species unconditionally alike.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT THAT STANDS OUT WHEN YOU REALLY FELT LIKE YOUR PROJECT WAS HELPING? On Thanksgiving Day 2014, my sisters and I gave out Mac&Mic care packages to the homeless in San Antonio. There was one man in particular that really made me feel like I was doing good by my cause. I handed him the package and said, “Happy Thanksgiving, buddy!” He looked at me with teary eyes and said, “Wow... I didn’t think anyone cared.” I opened my arms and we hugged for what seemed like eternity. I never forgot it. I think about it all the time. It was one of the most meaningful moments in my life.

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL? My ultimate goal is to take the Mac&Mic project internationally. As a future veterinarian, I will open a mobile veterinary practice [dedicated] to the Mac&Mic project to help replenish the endangered animal species of Earth. Care packages will be dispersed globally to povertystricken areas and families in need of assistance. Each care package will also be accompanied by seeds and gardening tools to promote nature’s necessity. MAY 2015 | 36 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

THE APP INVENTORS

SAY GOODBYE TO CRAIGSLIST CREEPS AND HELLO TO UNITRADE, A BRILLIANT NEW APP FROM FOUR STUDENTS…

DESCRIBE THE PREMISE BEHIND UNITRADE.

WHAT ROLE DID EACH OF YOU PLAY IN THE APP’S DEVELOPMENT?

WHERE DO EACH OF YOU SEE YOURSELVES IN FIVE YEARS? TEN?

JEREMY: UniTrade is a classifieds app designed exclusively for university students. Students simply register with their university email addresses to join a vibrant marketplace for textbooks, housing, parking, event tickets, and many other goods and services!

DARICE: Our team consists of two journalism and two computer science students. Our two CS students, Roman and Jeremy, have been working very heavily on the coding side of things. Brittany and myself film and edit promo videos that we have produced throughout the semester. Each group member, however, has contributed to the overall look and design elements of the app.

BRITTANY: I see myself in the startup world, working with digital media and marketing in five years. In 10 years, I think it would be cool to have my own startup. We’ll see what happens!

HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THE APP? ROMAN: Every member of the team had tried using Facebook groups to accomplish the same thing, but we all knew how much we didn’t like using those pages. They were super unorganized, made it hard to find what you want, and were riddled with posts about already-sold items. Brittany and Darice went to a meeting one day and started discussing these groups, and the idea came from that.

WHAT MAKES THIS UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SERVICES? BRITTANY: Our app is essentially a university-student-only Craigslist. What makes it better and different is that it’s only available to university students. We’re also working on including a messaging feature so sellers don’t ever have to give out any personal information!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO CREATE AN APP? DARICE: Thinking outside the box is essential. People wanting to build an app shouldn’t be afraid to dream and think big. You should build smart and efficiently to take a problem that people face on a daily basis and figure out the solution to that problem in a creative way. ROMAN: It’s not that hard, but it takes a lot of time. You have to be willing to learn a lot of things yourself, and you have to be willing to spend a lot of time on a small feature that no one will probably notice.

MAY 2015 | 37 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

DARICE: In the future, I see myself working in Austin. I hope whatever job I have, I’m working creatively. On another note, I hope I’m successful, healthy and the owner of my future pet pug. JEREMY: I’m excited to pursue a career in software development and hopefully continue making things that can be an important part of people’s lives. ROMAN: World domina… software developer at a web company or something.

UniTrade launches May 2nd for the UT Austin campus, and will be available in the Apple store. The founders hope to bring it to other campuses in the future as well!

(And let’s not forget the Mike’s Hard Lemonade stored in the mini fridge. We’re onto you, freshmen.

MY SUPER DRUNK 21 No, your parents’ paychecks aren’t backing this, and you won’t be getting a pink convertible, but what you WILL get is very, very drunk. Your first legal drinking experience will probably end in tears and vomit, but up until that, hey, you’re going to have a lot of fun.

REAL SORORITY GIRLS OF

(Fill-in-the-Blank Campus) Just think of what today’s Real Housewives were like ten years ago. Now imagine if they all lived together in a sorority house. “OMG DID YOU HEAR THAT BECKY ASKED LINDSAY’S EX TO FORMAL? BITCHHHH!” Tears will be cried, and extensions will fly.

CAMPUS GOT TALENT

SURVIVOR

After a couple of shots, everyone’s ordinary and mediocre talents become the most spectacular things you’ve ever seen. Your roommate’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”? SO AMAZING. That cheesy trick your amateur magician friend just did? HOLY SHIT DID HE SELL HIS SOUL FOR THESE POWERS?!

We don’t even have to change the name of this one. And we can probably all agree that getting through college is a lot harder than living on a goddamn tropical island.

PROJECT HALLWAY Got an 8 a.m. class? Here stylish students battle it out to turn those pajamas and slippers into fabulous fashions for class. Because wearing waistbands that aren’t elastic? Please. MAY 2015 | 39 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

If you like Blur, check out these London-based rockers, who provided 19 random factoids here… 1. STRIPPED DOWN In the summer, we rehearse in our boxers. 2. DON’T HATE, COHABITATE We all used to live together in a tower block in Hackney, East London. 3. BANDING TOGETHER Sam and Ed were in a highschool band called the Original Slims, which changed members on a pretty much weekly basis and created a total of two songs. 4. THE CLAP Sam and Dom were in a college band called The Tarts, and on their one and only live performance, Dom got so drunk he completely forgot the bass line to “Come Together,” which they were covering, and when it dropped down to the bass solo part, he held both hands in the air and tried to start a slow clap.

5. LITTLE DRUMMER BOYS We can all play the drums except Dom. 6. …AND LITTLE STRUMMER BOYS We can all play guitar except Ed. 7. NAKED AMBITION Dom twice did a stripe tease along to “Lust For Life” to the crowd after a headline show in Belgium. They lost interest the second time. 8. INK-REDIBLE Dom and Micky have Life In Film tattoos. 9. KNITWIT When we are in the studio, Micky sometimes knits scarfs.

12. SNOOZE YOU LOSE When we are on tour, Dom often sleepwalks around the hotel in his boxers. 13. HAPPY HOLIDAZE We recorded at Ray Davies’ studio, Konk, and he invited us to his Christmas party for drinks and nibbles. 14. GENTLEMAN AND A SCHOLAR Ed has a degree in architecture. 15. WATERED DOWN We all ritually drink as much water as we can backstage pregig, rehydrating.

10. BIG SHOTS Our official band drink is a double shot of vodka in a pint of lime and soda.

16. THE TEMPTATIONS We flew to Japan, and in the bar on the plane we were propositioned by a Saudi man who wanted us to come visit him on his yacht.

11. GOAL-ORIENTED Sam is a fan of Liverpool Football Club.

17. STRIKE OUT We all have 10 pin bowling names. It’s our favourite thing

MAY 2015 | 43 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

to do when on tour. Hot Tony Schwep The Greek, Barry Balinski, Bagels Giûseppe and Bobby Cornetto–we’ll let you guess who’s who. 18. FALLIN’ FOR YOU Micky once fell backwards off the stage at a gig in Camden during the last song in the set. 19. NO-LOVE BOAT On our last UK tour in Bristol, whilst playing on a boat, a punchup started in the crowd, and the bouncers dragged people out and threw them back onto the land whilst we played “Get Closer.”

RAP - F O R - A - STAC K C H AM P

The student, rapper and winner of Austin’s Rap for a Stack competition—whose influences include Eminem, Childish Gambino and Earl Sweatshirt—fills us in with some facts… 1. THE WRITE STUFF I’m a journalism major. 2. THAT’S A RAP The first time I rapped was on a school bus when I was 12 years old. I remember everyone was rapping, and I decided to jump in. I was spitting some real heavy lyrics...I was terrible. 3. NURSERY RHYMES The first rap song I ever heard was “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio. My dad put the Dangerous Minds soundtrack on in the car, and I was a little six-year-old bobbing my head in the car seat. I was hooked, haha. 4. LIKE A G-MA My favorite show so far was at this super small, run-down bar in San Antonio. I had so much family come out, including my grandma. She was dancing and had the biggest smile on her face; she loved it. That will always have a special place in my heart.

7. 15 MINUTES OF FAME I performed at the Spurs NBA Finals game last year [and] did this cover of “Jump Around” by House of Pain. I had probably 5,000 people jumping up and down. For about four minutes of my life, I felt famous. 8. HOST WITH THE MOST I’m a co-host for one of the top podcasts in the nation, Doubletoasted.com. Stay Toasty! 9. STAR POWER I was in an article earlier this year for MYSA.com titled “21 Rising Stars In Their 20s.” I’m super honored to be recognized by my city. 10. SHOWTIME I had my own hip-hop radio show in San Antonio for KSYM 90.1 FM. My show was called Creative Control, and my DJ name was Ray Stacks

5. CHOW MEIN MAN My favorite food is Chinese food. I could seriously eat it every day.

11. SOUNDS OF SUMMER I’ve worked as an announcer for the past four summers at a major theme park. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had working, and the people are the most talented bunch I’ve ever met.

6. ADMIT ONE The happiest moment of my life so far was the night I found out I was accepted into UT. It was my dream school, and I never thought I could make it in there. I still can’t believe it.

12. BACK IN THE DAY I met Kendrick Lamar—he had just dropped Overly Dedicated—and all of Top Dawg Entertainment before they were famous. He’s going to be one of the greats.

13. #YOLO My biggest fear is the thought of lying on my deathbed and wishing that I had done more with my life, and that’s the thing that keeps me going. I never want to look back and have regrets. 14. PACK(ER) IT UP, PACK(ER) IT IN I’m a die-hard Green Bay Packer fan. I’m still not over the playoff loss to the Seahawks. Just let Rodgers throw the ball! 15. MEET AND GREET The best advice I can give to anyone is just be confident and don’t be afraid to talk to people. Try to talk to at least one new person a day. You’ll be amazed at the people you meet.

MAY 2015 | 47 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

16. “ALL I DO IS WIN, WIN, WIN…” Other than working on music, I love playing sports in my free time. I’m probably the most competitive person you will meet. 17. HARD OF HERITAGE I can’t pronounce my last name, was raised in Georgia, hate spicy food and can’t speak Spanish. I’m probably the worst Hispanic ever.

MUSIC MUMFORD & SONS | WILDER MIND Expected Release: May 4 Bring on the banjos and vests–or lack thereof, perhaps–because Mumford & Sons are back, but with a decidedly different sound. Wilder Mind is the third studio album from the quartet and features the single “Believe,” which—shameless promo—you’ll find on our Spotify playlist (and on repeat in the office). Get ready for the radio to start overplaying them and the Grammys to start rolling in, because Mumford & Sons truly have the Midas touch. (Meaning everything they touch seems to turns to gold… or platinum, rather.)

PITCH PERFECT 2 Expected Premiere: May 15 The gang is back! Fat Amy, Becca, Chloe, and the rest of the Barden Bellas are set to compete in an international a cappella competition during their senior year. So what shenanigans will ensue? Will the Trebletones be raising hell along with them? Who will Fat Amy hook up with this time? Eh, really, we’re just in it for the cup song.

PENNY DREADFUL Season 2 Premiere: May 3

TV

Showtime’s best Victorian gothic horror/ fantasy show is back for its second season! IMDB rates the show an overall total of 8.2 stars (FTW!), and its fandom is obsessed with the dark, the black and the horrible (which, it happens, are three of our favorite things as well). Make sure that you sharpie this show into your schedule, because the water cooler talk is about to get good.

MOSTLY A’S: PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

There’s nothing you love more than America, and you want to prove it to the world by running that bad boy! You dream about what you’d say in your State of the Union and already have a statement prepared for your first scandal. Some may find your red, white and blue apartment overkill, but they’re probably just commies…

MOSTLY B’S: PARENT

If you’re the person who gets tired at 10:30 on a Saturday and insists on giving your friends life advice—whether they want it or not—then parenthood is the path for you. You organize all the outings, pack extra snacks, and you do it all with everyone’s best interests at heart! You also have a killer finger-wagging/ raised-eyebrow combo.

MOSTLY C’S: HOBO

It’s not that you couldn’t do more with your life, it’s just that you loved the cool feeling of concrete on your face the first time you were thrown out of a bar and you never looked back. You never wanted to cut your hair, trim your beard or do anything remotely hygienic, and now you’ll never have to! Let your lumbersexuality devolve until you’re just flannel and fur, and you do you!

MOSTLY D’S: SOMETHING IN AN OFFICE

We have no idea what you should actually DO in said office, but it involves taking care of business. You might work with computers, but you could also be an accountant? Or maybe just “boss”? All we know is you’re going to wear a lot of suits, attend a lot of meetings, and casual Friday will become your new religion. Start working on your water cooler chat now!

MOSTLY E’S: REALITY TV STAR

You think it’s really cute that actors say they worked hard to get where they are, when you know all it’s going to take for you to reach the top is hardcore narcissism, your own YouTube channel, and the ability to throw temper tatrums until someone notices your skills! You’ll do whatever it takes for fame—even if you have to punch Snooki and/or compete in a child beauty pageant! MAY 2015 | 61 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

HOROSCOPES

BABY, WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? ARIES You need to take a chill pill this month. We know you’re super pumped about that awesome thing that just happened, but the rest of us are studying for finals and need you to take it down a notch.

TAURUS Stock up on champagne, Taurus, because you’re about to receive some good news worthy of a whole lotta bottle poppin’.

GEMINI When life throws lemons at you this month, add some vodka and turn that shit into a cocktail. (That was a metaphor…for, um, something… maybe…we tried.)

CANCER Tired of Tinder? This is the month to try something new! Like Happn…or Hinge…or actually talking to people in public!

LEO Watch your mouth this month. You don’t want to accidently start some shit and have it come back around. Remember: Karma’s a bitch.

VIRGO You have been reminding everyone of their mom lately, and not in a good way. If you insist on nagging your friends, at least do their laundry and bake them some cookies, too.

LIBRA You should probably spend less time in the mirror and more time in a book. Your brows look fine, but your GPA? Not so much.

SUMMER By the Numbers:

CAPRICORN Take a risk this month. What’s the worst that could happen? Prison? Expulsion? Nah, you’re invincible.

83%

of summer road trips are six hours or longer.

AQUARIUS Lighten up, will you? Your negative vibes are getting to everybody and they are not down with that shit. Take a walk, get laid, put a cocktail umbrella in your drink. Whatever.

PISCES It’s a joke, not a dick. Don’t take it so hard.

SAGITTARIUS Give yourself a reality check this month. You think you’re hot shit, but are you really? Okay, fine, you kind of are.
