SAM SUMPTER EDITOR
SPRING HAS SPRUNG Seeing as I’m writing this circa two weeks ahead of time, I have no idea whether you’re currently basking in the hot sun, enjoying an unexpected wet t-shirt contest via April shower, or shaking in your completely unseasonable boots due to a surprise cold front. Spring in Texas is funny that way.
FOUNDER PUBLISHERS VICE PRESIDENT EDITOR ASSISTANT EDITOR WRITERS
But whatever the weather, it’s the final stretch of the semester, meaning you’re probably too stressed with finals, dissertations and “group” projects to actually give a damn. Thankfully, we’re here to distract you. And in this month’s edition of better-things-to-do-thanyour-homework, we’ve got some pretty excellent stuff.

wardrobes we’d kill for. Like, seriously, you’re going to see these people and their designs on the runway (or maybe Project Runway) sometime soon. And then you’ll be dying of jealousy and awe like I am right now. Welcome. We’ve also got ways to rock other stylish staples—from lace to brights to beautiful man buns—in this issue, along with the usual excellent music, amazing events, and sage advice you’ve come to expect from Study Breaks.

PICK OF THE MONTH LONGHORN RUN Be a part of the Texas tradition and get ready to get your run on—without all the hassle and huffing and puffing of a marathon. Join thousands of students and alumni this month for the fifth annual Longhorn Run! There will be both a 5K and a 10K option available, so if you’re “not really an athlete,” “not the best runner,” or you’re “allergic to exercise,” keep in mind that for the shorter of the two, you’ll only have to run about three miles. (In other words, there’s a pretty solid chance that you won’t, like, die.) So come out and demonstrate your Longhorn pride by moving those legs! Then spend the rest of the day watching Netflix…like nature intended.
WHO:
Girl Who Probably Wears a Lot of Concealer
Fit Students and Athletic Alumni
WHAT:
Will lace up their running shoes to participate in one of the healthiest Texas traditions
top five decades in fashion
WHEN:
Next time you consider going to class in your pajamas, take some inspiration from the styles of yesteryear and be a walking blast from the fashion past instead...
1. The ‘20s: Men dressed like gangsters,
women finally took off those pain-in-theabs corsets and the world got a whole lot crazier. It’s like, how many 1910s theme parties have you been invited to? None? We thought so.
2. The ‘60s: This is the decade that birthed the winged eye, the beehive and the baby doll dress (you’re welcome, Lana Del Rey). Remember: a Kennedy in the streets and a Marilyn in the sheets. 3. The ‘70s: All they wore in the seventies were jumpsuits and button-ups, which 6
APRIL 2015 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
means that it probably only took them five minutes to get ready...aka they probably got a lot more sleep than we do now.
4. The ‘90s: Flannels! Flannels everywhere! This was probably the comfiest decade of fashion because everything was so oversized that if you got tired, you could just take a nap in your overalls. 5. The 2000s: No decade made less sense than the first 10 years of the 21st Century. Do you like those Ugg boots and that mini skirt? Is it also 36 degrees outside? Sounds like the perfect outfit!

WHY:
Because in the fall, Texas traditions involve tailgating, barbecue and beer, so in the spring, your traditions should involve undoing that damage. Visit UTLONGHORNRUN.COM for more info.

MEN’S SWIMMING
A WAVE OF RECORDS All-American sophomore Jack Conger set NCAA, American and U.S. Open records in the 200-yard butterfly during a time trials session during the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 25. Conger finished the event in 1:39:31 and eclipsed the NCAA record of 1:39.33 set by Michigan’s Dylan Bosch at the 2014 NCAA Championships. The swim also beat Bosch’s U.S. Open record as the fastest 200-yard butterfly swim recorded on U.S. soil, regardless of the swimmer’s nationality. Conger’s swim topped the American record (1:39.65) set by Michael Phelps on March 7, 2010 in Annapolis, Md. Conger is the first Longhorn to set an American record while swimming collegiately since 2008 when Olympic gold medalist Dave Walters claimed the U.S. mark in the 200yard freestyle at the Texas Invitational. BASEBALL
HONORING CLIFF GUSTAFSON Baseball coach Cliff Gustafson lied to Darrell Royal in 1968 by saying he was making $500 less than he really was so he wouldn’t scare off Texas’ athletic director. He eventually accepted the Longhorns job. More than a half-century later, Gustafson — who attended the dinner honoring him as a National College Baseball Hall of Famer with his new wife, Ann — joins Augie Garrido as one of the best coaches in college baseball history. Gustafson wasn’t much on pitch counts or 8
APRIL 2015 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
excuses for losing. He took baseballs home to stitch them up and poured over scorebooks. He’d hold practices from 1 p.m. until past dark, and he drilled his teams on everything from the squeeze bunt to hitting the cutoff man. And Gustafson won — all the time. An amazing 1,427 times for a .792 winning percentage that still ranks first among Division I coaches. He won with pitching and defense. He coached when going to Omaha was the standard. He went there 17 times in 29 seasons. He won there twice. One time, when he finished second in 1989, his team had no business even being there. Texas stood for college baseball and was so revered that ace Kirk Dressendorfer didn’t even list the Longhorns among his top three choices because he didn’t think he was good enough. He still remembers Gustafson sending the pitchers to left field for conditioning drills, and Dress tagged along with 20 other pitchers. “Gus,” Dress said, “you made me better than I thought I could be.”

PETE’S DUELIN
10
APRIL 2015 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
ORIGINS
DUELING BROS
When Pete’s started in 1992, it was a oneman show starring Steve Green pumping out the greatest hits on the grand piano, but when spearheads Corey Urbach and Grag Sacony got involved, they decided that the place needed something extra. Now two of Texas’ top entertainers battle it out (with pianos…not, like, swords) on stage every night in a musical competition that makes for an extremely awesome evening.
Every night at the self-described “sing-along, clap-along, drink-along, have-one-helluva-goodtime-along bar,” pianists duke it out on two baby grands, taking the stage in two-person rotations for back-and-forth performances or “duels.” And to clarify, these performers won’t be boring you via Beethoven, but getting the crowd going with covers of AC/DC, Sublime, Blink-182 and more. So make sure you’ve got a nice buzz to prepare you for the greatness that is the piano rendition of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” Because yeah, that definitely happens.
Tired of taking subpar well shots, being grinded on by strangers, and trying to have a conversation by yelling over the mmtikka-mmtikka-mmtika of terrible techno? Take a break from your typical (terrible) spots and check out Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar! With really good drinks and live entertainment in the form of their dueling pianists, it’s guaranteed to be a damn good time!
NG PIANO BAR! THE DRINKS We did a whole feature on Pete’s delicious drinks last year—that’s how good they are. Try one of their 52-oz. schooners, which serve “up to five people.” (We put that in quotes because we know that in the alcohol department, some of y’all are particularly, um, ambitious.) We recommend the Planters Punch, which features Pinnacle Tropical Punch, Peach Schnapps, muddled oranges and Hawaiian Punch in a concoction that’s nothing short of killer.

HOW TO
WORDS: SAHAR WALJI
5 WAYS TO
WORK A MAN BUN If you haven’t noticed, the man bun is one of the most popular hairstyles adorning men’s heads today. People love them, people love to hate them, and there are even entire Tumblr pages devoted to the trend. (Yes, really.) However, the bun is not for the faint of heart (or thin of hair), so here we’ve compiled five ways to really work the look. Because sorry, bros: the bun isn’t as simple as the buzz cut.
fanpop.com
1. SLIP SOME CHOPSTICKS IN If you want to add a bit of a Mulan-esque feel to your bun, just slip in two chopsticks and burst into song with “Make a Man Out of You.” Li Shang is hands-down the most crush-worthy Disney male protagonist, so work off of that!
22
APRIL 2015 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
media.cache.com
2. PAIR IT WITH A NICE BOW Go dapper with a bow tie or accent your bun with a lacy or glittery bow to class it up a bit. Check out your local Claire’s for a few and ignore the weird looks from the female cashiers and eighth grade girls shopping there. They’re just trying to crimp your style.
www.zastavki.com
4. STYLE IT LIKE A BURGER If you consider yourself a foodie, be creative with your hairdo and stick a slab of meat in your bun! (Get it–BUN? HAMBURGER BUN? BECAUSE YOU HAVE A MAN BUN? Okay, sorry. We’ll stop now.)
Fawnie Dear
imageserver.com
3. TURN IT INTO A POKÉ BALL Ladies love Pokémon, and if they don’t, they’re obviously not the ones for you. Simply dye your bun red and white and go around saying “If you were a Pokémon, I’D CHOOSE YOU!” If that doesn’t blow ‘em away, we don’t know what will.
64.177.132.22
5. USE IT AS A PENCIL HOLDER If you’re not keen on the idea of chopsticks (or didn’t have time to go to your local Chinese restaurant and steal a few), go with another approach and use your hair as a pencil holder instead. Stick all of your writing utensils in there and whip ‘em out conveniently during class. After all, who needs a backpack when you have a bun?

Check out Evan’s Jewelry at DesignsByEvan.net & on Instagram at @designsbyevan!
EVAN RAUCH We interviewed— and in the process, got distracted by some seriously shiny objects—the freshman jewelry designer behind Designs by Evan HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOU TO MAKE A PIECE OF JEWELRY? The majority take about an hour each because I knot between each bead when I bead them, but it depends on the necklace.
WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE IN YOUR JEWELRY? I use a lot of different materials. I use a lot of leather for the chokers and shorter necklaces. I use different gemstones, too. I use pyrite a lot, which is a popular stone, and also other ones like quartz and moonstone and labradorite.
WHERE DO YOU GET ALL THESE MATERIALS? I go to different bead shows–mostly in Houston, because that’s where I’m from. I also get some online and some [from] vendors at shows or stores.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR JEWELRY? Right now, my stuff’s at c.jane [in Austin]. It’s not always there; it’s as often as I can make it when I have time outside of school. It’s sold at three other stores in Houston, too. I [also] do trunk shows at sorority houses. Over the break, I had a trunk show in Houston at my house. I sent out an invitation over Instagram. That’s where I post most of my stuff, and I’ll post that I’m having a show. [People] come to my house and hang out, and it’s fun.

MYTHS MYTH: Philosophy majors sit around and read old books and overthink things.
MYTH: People who major in philosophy won’t find a job after graduating.
MYTH: Philosophers are boring and like to use big words.
TRUTH: Philosopher majors are typically wellrounded. They do study a lot of old (confusing) text, but they also analyze new works and everyday life.
TRUTH: Philosophy is considered one of the most transferable work skills, and people with these degrees go into a wide range of fields, including politics, education and management.
TRUTH: As in any major, some individuals are bound to be boring, while others will probably kick your ass in beer pong… while using those big words, naturally.
“To be honest, the reason I chose to major in philosophy was pretty dumb. I had this weird notion that I didn’t know how to think, and at the same time, I had some interest in going into law. I looked up majors that would ‘help me learn to think’ and would also help me on the path to law school, and philosophy popped up more than once.”
-Cristina Loo, 22

FROM A DUDE’S PERSPECTIVE COLLEGE GUY, TELLS US WHAT’S ON HIS MIND EACH MONTH
Car Trouble: Relationship running out of gas? Here’s how to get back on the road to romantic bliss… There aren’t many things that can disrupt our lives quite like car trouble. We depend on our cars for so much, and when they are running great, life is good. The problem is that because these cars are such an important part of our lives, when we have car trouble, we can easily find ourselves in a rut. The same is true for relationships: when everything is going well—the metaphorical tank is full and the windows are down—we feel unstoppable, but when the passion is dead and the romance keeps stalling out, things can seem pretty hopeless. So, let’s say your relationship is broken down on the side of the road. Here is how to get that spark back to jump-start your relationship’s engine. Everyone knows about the honeymoon stage and how everything is so perfect for the first couple months. There are sparks and butterflies in those early stages, and it almost seems like magic. But eventually, the excitement of a new journey fades, and
all of the sudden, the life in your once-exciting relationship is all but gone. I remember being at that point: I was in a very committed, pretty happy seven-month relationship, when I started to feel like we were sputtering out of gas. I tried everything, from romantic dinners to buying flowers—we even tried giving each other space—but no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t seem to get back into full gear. In a last chance effort to save our dying relationship, we decided to get out of our comfort zones together. We did things as simple as going to haunted houses and riding roller coasters to becoming vulnerable to each other, sharing our most personal fears, pains and regrets. Having those new experiences together deepened the emotional bond between us and recreated the same experiences and feelings we had when we were first falling for one another. And just like that, the energy, desire and passion were pumped back into our relationship, and we checked out of the auto shop and got back on the highway, cruising to somewhere sunny and 75. While it may be obvious you are having trouble, sometimes it takes getting under the hood and digging deep into your relationship’s most crucial parts to rediscover the model on which you built your relationship in the first place. When you know what you need to make your relationship run smoothly, you can find ways to make it happen. Sure you may have to change a flat tire or repair a dent or two along the way, but when you know how to fix it, a little car–or relationship–trouble really isn’t that bad. galleryhip.com
GABE, A REAL-LIFE
OUT OF THE SHOP & BACK ON THE ROAD
4 WAYS TO GET YOUR RELATIONSHIP IN GEAR
HAVE DEEP CONVERSATIONS: After all, you didn’t catch the feels for each other by chatting about the weather. Talk about things that matter—like your beliefs on religion, politics, morality and even world events—and see where it leads. You may find out you like that other person even more than you thought you did. DO SOMETHING DARING: Whether it’s four-wheeling, whitewater rafting or even going to see a scary movie, adrenaline is adrenaline and can serve as the spark to liven up your dormant butterflies.
MAKE MORE EYE CONTACT: They say the eyes are the windows of the soul. Try looking into each other’s eyes—even if it’s uncomfortable—and you may find there’s more to your partner than you anticipated...and more to discover. GET MORE INTIMATE: You know money, power and sex all have one thing in common: the more you have, the more you want. Make intimacy a habit and literally love your way back to being in love with your bae.

DESIGN AESTHETIC:
My designs are youthful and incorporate recent trends with techniques used in the past. My evening gown’s skirt uses a modern cartridge pleating, which was very popular during the Civil War era. The technique lets me compress around 20 feet of fabric into one skirt. I also painted and beaded my own fabric, which gives my designs an artisanal approach.

We love moshing, crowd surfing, jumping off the stage—all of that! Shout out to our people keeping it rowdy at shows!
4. RUBBIN’ IT OUT
Zander gives us crazy-intense massages, and we wrote a song about it called “Slow Motion Thugs” that just premiered on Spin. Go take a listen!

EXCLUSIVE
ROXY ROCA We talked Old Settler’s Fest, James Brown and The Jeffersons with Taye Cannon, the lead singer of this seven-man Austin-based band pumping out a sound best described as Powerhouse Southern Soul
How would you describe Roxy Roca’s sound? I would say if you grew up listening to James Brown, you’ll like our show. In no way am I comparing myself to James Brown; he’s just a big inspiration.
How did you come up with the band name? It’s a reference to [a character on] The Jeffersons. That was my favorite show when I was a kid. It’s a long story; in a way it has to do with the Civil Rights Movement. I grew up in the Deep South, and there was some racism, and I was never raised that way. The show had a really big imprint on me as a child, and I really liked Roxy Roker. When we were actually doing the band, I was like, “We need something that reeks of soul like Roxie Roker.” It’s a different spelling, but it’s a twist on her name.
Facebook/roxyroca @roxyroca roxyroca.com
Who are your musical influences?
What can people expect from a Roxy Roxa show?
My brother was heavily into Michael Jackson—I remember that—but I was very much into my dad’s records. I was listening to Otis Redding, Marvin Gay, James Brown. He was a huge influence because of the passion he put in. There’s a lot of rock ‘n’ roll influence too.
We got a new song out called “Love Maker DeVille”—it’s a fun tune. It’s funky, but it also rocks out. I think that’s a good indication of what you’re in store for. [Another] song called “Happiness is a Choice”—we don’t play it every show. It’s a funky tune and it’s kind of adlibbed a bit…you have to see it to [get it].
Do y’all have any pre-show rituals? I can’t speak for everybody. Myself, I usually go somewhere, warm up vocally, get into meditation and send out to the universe that I want to be bringing everyone together in the room to forget about what’s weighing on them. It’s bringing people together; the live music experience is part of the life experience.
You have seven people in your band—that’s a lot! We’ve fluctuated between 10 and seven over the years. Seven has been a lucky number for making it happen on the road. We knew it was going to be a challenge at the beginning— we’ve had our creative, passionate approach and our business approach. You have to make
CATCH ROXY ROCA LIVE AT MATTHEW’S EASTER CIRCUS [April 5 at Maggie Mae’s] & OLD SETTLER’S MUSIC FESTIVAL [April 16-19 at Salt Lick Pavilion and Camp Ben McCulloch], and listen to their record, Ain’t Nothin’ Fancy—out now!

decisions sometimes, and you have a couple people and you put your trust in them. Then there are big decisions that [everyone contributes to]. But yeah, it’s a lot of schedules to organize. We all play in Roxy Roca only. We’re committed to this project. We all just felt from the beginning that the more single-minded we were with our energy and focus, [the easier] we’d be able to get this in front of people.
Do you have any advice for young musicians? I always tell young musicians coming up to get a job in the industry, make some friends. Everyone in bands is out there working, and aside from a great sound and a great show, it helps to have those personal relationships with people in bars and clubs.
You’re playing Old Settler’s Fest this year. Excited about it? It’s really special to be a part of that and bring some soul and funk energy to the festival. We’re gonna bring it. I can’t wait.

MUSIC HANDWRITTEN | SHAWN MENDES Expected Release: April 14 A lot of good things come out of Canada (maple syrup…mounties…Drake), and now we have another reason to thank our neighbors to the north: the newest heartthrob from America’s Hat, Shawn Mendes! The artist released his self-titled EP—featuring the hit single, “Life of the Party”…which may or may not have been on repeat for all of us—last year, and now he’s back with his debut album. We’ll say “eh” to that.

PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2 Expected Premiere: April 17 Kevin James is back as our favorite cop in the sequel to the laughably awful original film. (Okay, fine, we kind of liked it.) In Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, our portly protagonist is headed to Vegas for a security expo, where he discovers a heist and has to save the day.
