INTRODUCTIE
NL Het groeiend potentieel van de beeldende kunstenaars in de Cas-co Studio’s blijven we in 2019 graag een podium bieden in stukcafé. Kaïn Walgrave bouwde tijdens de laatste tien jaar aan een consistent en eigenzinnig oeuvre waarin materiaalonderzoek een belangrijke plaats inneemt. Het resulteerde in een dynamisch archief van werken die telkens opnieuw aanleiding geven tot verder onderzoek. Zijn solo tussen de dingen benadrukt dat immer instabiele aspect van zijn werk: de mogelijkheid om te herbekijken en tot iets anders te leiden. De potentie zit tussen de dingen. Geen grootschalig video- of filmwerk dit voorjaar, maar – zo durven we argumenteren – even indrukwekkende geluidsinstallaties van Floris Vanhoof en Rie Nakajima. De immersieve installaties nodigen je uit om door een veld van klankobjecten te wandelen en zo je eigen compositie vorm te geven. Terwijl Vanhoofs installatie Polyhedra er strak, gecontroleerd en geometrisch uitziet, straalt de installatie van Nakajima eerder organische chaos uit. Of beide ook zo ‘klinken’ is aan jou om te ontdekken. De liefhebbers van kunstenaarsen auteursfilms nodigen we samen met Courtisane opnieuw uit voor een reeks filmavonden die ons stevig in de wereld van vandaag plaatsen. In Western schetst Valeska Grisebach op poignante wijze de contouren en uitdagingen van het hedendaags Europa, western-style. In haar meest recente film Tremor geeft Annik Leroy een stem aan het effect van geweld en onrechtvaardigheid op individuen en samenlevingen. Maar haar film, een sensoriële reis tussen herinnering en nachtmerrie, biedt tegelijkertijd op koppige wijze weerstand en hoop. Éric Baudelaire ten slotte, brengt in Also Known as Jihadi het portret van een vermeend is-strijder,

EN Leuven’s visual art community is growing. This spring, stuk is eager to continue its support of artists working in the Cas-co studios. Over the past ten years, Kaïn Walgrave has built up an idiosyncratic yet consistent oeuvre in which material investigations take on a primordial role. His practice results in a dynamic archive in which individual works spark continued investigations. tussen de dingen, his solo exhibition in stukcafé, emphasizes this unstable aspect of his work: the possibility to go back and reconsider questions and solutions, which in turn leads to different outcomes. The true potency lies in between things. There are no large-scale video or film works this spring, but there are two equally impressive sound installations by Floris Vanhoof and Rie Nakajima. The immersive installations invite you to walk through a field of sound objects, creating your own composition. Whereas Vanhoof’s installation Polyhedra appears rather tight, controlled and geometric, Nakajima’s installation radiates organic chaos. What they ‘sound’ like is for you to discover. Three film nights should definitely make it into your diaries this spring. Together with Courtisane, we’ve selected film works that are firmly positioned into today’s world. In Western, Valeska Grisebach poignantly sketches the contours and challenges of contemporary Europe, doing so western-style. In her latest film Tremor, Annik Leroy gives voice to the rippling effect of violence and injustice permeating individual as well as social lives. But her film, a sensory journey between memory and nightmare, also speaks of resistance and hope. And finally, in Also Known as Jihadi, Éric Baudelaire sketches a portrait of an

niet aan de hand van wat hij deed, maar aan de hand van de landschappen die hij zag op zijn reis van Frankrijk naar SyriÍ en terug. Drie sterke stemmen die als geen ander weten hoe ze complexe materie op een intrigerende wijze vorm kunnen geven – dat raakt. Voor meer film verwijzen we natuurlijk ook graag naar de filmprogrammatie van onze collega’s in zed-Vesalius en zed-stuk. Het documentairefestival docville kiest dit jaar resoluut voor het hartverwarmende thema van de liefde. Omdat 'gaming' vandaag meer en meer zijn eigen plek in het artistieke veld opeist, host stuk voor de eerste keer een gamesfestival i.s.m. Happy Volcano. Op one2play kan je de nieuwste artistieke, culturele en maatschappelijk relevante videogames ontdekken. Tot slot op de agenda: een stevig lezingenprogramma dat inzicht biedt in de betekenis van falen (Feest van de filosofie), recente ontwikkelingen binnen hedendaagse architectuur (Stad & Architectuur) en natuur en klimaat.

alleged former is soldier, not through his actions but based on landscapes he must have seen on his travels from France to Syria and back. These are recent works by three compelling voices of art and cinema. They know how to work through complex subject matter, giving it an intriguing shape that lingers in the mind. Film fans can also check out the art-house film programme at zed-Vesalius and zed-stuk. Note that this spring, the annual docville documentary festival turns among others to the heart-warming theme of love. It is no secret that game culture is increasingly rubbing shoulders with the visual arts world. stuk is therefore very excited to host its first games festival, together with Happy Volcano. At one2play you can discover the latest videogames that are relevant in, or pushing the boundaries of the artistic, cultural and civic worlds. Last but not least, food for thought in lectures focusing on the meaning of failure (Feest van de Filosofie), recent developments in contemporary architecture (Stad & Architectuur) and, of course, climate and nature.

‘Het uitgangspunt van [Walgraves] onderzoek is irrationeel, maar de werkmethode geordend en precies. Bij elke stap wenst de kunstenaar zijn onderzoek te ordenen, te analyseren en te archiveren. Telkens rijzen er nieuwe vragen en groeit de complexiteit. (…). Onze geest wenst in een wereld te leven die we enigszins overzien, maar de nieuwsgierigheid drijft ons vooruit. NL Kaïn Walgrave is een beeldend kunstenaar gefascineerd door materialen en materiaalonderzoek en door de verbindingen die tussen zijn werken ontstaan. In zijn dagelijkse praktijk laat Walgrave materialen zoals papier, doek, verf, hars en lijm in fysieke en chemische processen op elkaar inwerken om ze daarna in wisselende constellaties te presenteren en te archiveren. De onderzoeksvragen en/of de keuze van materiaal linken de schilderijen, prints en tekeningen op meervoudige wijze aan elkaar. De kruisverwijzingen vormen een complex web, een eigen wereld. Dat universum – in de vorm van een werkarchief – maakt intrinsiek deel uit van Walgraves praktijk. Elk beeld uit het archief is dan ook te begrijpen als een momentopname waarin tegelijkertijd een hele reeks beelden – reeds bestaande en nog te creëren – vervat zijn. In tussen de dingen gaat Walgrave op zoek naar een manier om dat dynamisch universum open te plooien: hoe toon je op lineaire wijze iets dat ‘an sich’ rizomatisch is van structuur? Hoe begin je aan iets dat gegarandeerd zal falen?
Sinds najaar 2017 werken Cas-co en STUK samen aan een presentatieplatform voor beeldende kunstenaars verbonden aan Cas-co.

EN Kaïn Walgrave is a visual artist fascinated by materials and materials research, and by the connections that have grown to exist between his works. In a myriad of ways his paintings, prints and drawings are interlinked through research questions and/or material use. The multiple cross-connections form a complex web, an idiosyncratic world. This universe – in the form of a work archive – is an intrinsic part of Walgrave’s practice. Every image in the archive can be understood as a ‘snapshot’, an image captured in time that holds in it a series of other images, already existing and future ones. In tussen de dingen [between things], Walgrave searches for a way to open up this dynamic universe of his: how do you linearly present something which is in essence rhizomatic? How do you start an endeavour destined to fail?

NL stuk presenteert twee geluidsinstallaties van Floris Vanhoof en Rie Nakajima in het kader van Sound in May. Hoewel contrasterend in vorm, esthetiek en akoestische omgeving zijn beide werken opgebouwd uit een groot aantal klinkende objecten die samen een veellagige symfonie vormen. De luisteraar bepaalt zijn eigen compositie door rond te wandelen in die omgevingen. In de stuk Labozaal klinkt de immersieve installatie Polyhedra van Belgisch mediakunstenaar Floris Vanhoof. Polyhedra bestaat uit 50 geometrische kartonnen vormen die verspreid hangen in de ruimte en die elk een luidspreker bevatten. Zo ontstaat er een wolk van klanken met variërende intensiteit, een sonisch regenwoud dat de perceptie van de luisteraar op de proef stelt. In dialoog met Vanhoof bouwt de Japanse geluidskunstenaar Rie Nakajima een nieuwe installatie op maat van de witte traphal naast de labozaal. Terwijl Polyhedra gekenmerkt wordt door synthesizer-klanken in een donkere omgeving met nauwelijks akoestische reflectie, gebruikt Nakajima uitsluitend akoestische geluiden die in dialoog gaan met de natuurlijke galm van de lichte traphal. In haar typische stijl combineert Nakajima kinetische apparaten met gevonden objecten. Tijdens de openingsavond zullen de kunstenaars live performen in hun installaties. Floris Vanhoof presenteert tevens zijn nieuwe album, The Fluid Computer, dat verschijnt bij kraak. Rie Nakajima nodigt twee iconen uit de Japanse geluidskunst uit, Akio Suzuki en Aki Onda. Zij zullen enkele muzikale interventies brengen in dialoog met de architectuur van het stuk-gebouw.

EN As part of Sound in May, stuk presents two sound installations by Floris Vanhoof and Rie Nakajima. Although contrasting in form, aesthetics and acoustic environment, both works consist of sounding objects, which form a multi-layered symphony. By walking around, the listener determines the composition they hear. Polyhedra, an immersive installation by Belgian media artist Floris Vanhoof, will sound in the stuk Labozaal. Polyhedra comprises 50 geometric cardboard shapes, hanging over the space and each containing a loudspeaker. The effect is a cloud of sounds with varying intensity, a sonic rainforest that tests the listener’s perception. Japanese sound artist Rie Nakajima is building a new site-specific installation, in dialogue with Vanhoof, for the stairwell next to the stuk Labozaal. Whereas Polyhedra uses synthesizer sounds in a dark environment with low acoustic reflection, Nakajima only uses acoustic sounds that enter into dialogue with the natural reverberation of the light stairwell. In her inimitable style, Nakajima combines kinetic devices and found objects. The artists perform live in their installations during the opening night. Floris Vanhoof also presents his new album, The Fluid Computer, released on kraak recordings. Rie Nakajima invites two icons from Japanese sound art, Akio Suzuki and Aki Onda. They will perform musical interventions in dialogue with stuk’s architecture.

VALESKA GRISEBACH WESTERN 2017, DCP, Nederlandse ondertitels, 121'
NL Zelden evoceerde een film op zo een indringende manier de contouren en uitdagingen van het hedendaagse Europa. Voor Western ging Grisebach uitgebreid op zoek naar gepaste locaties en een non-professionele cast. In Petrelik (Zuid-Bulgarije) vond ze de geschikte plek om het ‘Wilde Oosten’ te verzinnebeelden en een eigen invulling te geven aan het westerngenre. Geïnspireerd op de ambivalente heldenfiguren in klassieke genre-oefeningen zoals Anthony Manns Winchester ’73, worden de duellerende neocowboys in Western belichaamd door een groep Duitse bouwvakkers die bij hun confrontatie met het vreemde weifelen tussen nieuwsgierigheid en paranoia, tussen een verlangen naar samenhorigheid en een angst voor het onbekende. Zo raakt Grisebachs zelfbenoemde ‘dans met de western’ aan een aantal kwesties die vandaag centraal staan in het Europese debat, waaronder ook de ‘gold-rush’ naar het Oosten, een thema dat ook zindert doorheen een andere film uit de zogenaamde Berliner Schule: Maren Ades Toni Erdmann, waaraan Grisebach niet toevallig meewerkte als scriptconsulent.
EN Rarely has a film evoked the contours and challenges of today’s Europe so poignantly. For Western, Grisebach searched extensively for suitable locations and a non-professional cast. Petrelik (Southern Bulgaria) symbolizes the myth of the ‘Wild East’ and is the perfect place for her own interpretation of the western genre. Inspired by the ambivalent heroic figures in classical genre practices such as Anthony Mann’s Winchester ’73, the duelling neo-cowboys in Western are embodied by a group of German construction workers who, in their confrontation with the foreign, waver between curiosity and paranoia, between a desire towards communality and a fear of the unknown. That’s how Grisebach’s self-proclaimed ‘dance with the western’ touches on a number of issues that are central to the European debate today, including the ‘gold rush’ to the East, a theme that also resonates throughout another film from the so-called Berliner Schule: Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann, on which it’s no coincidence that Grisebach collaborated as a script consultant.

NL Es ist immer Krieg: onheilspellende woorden, ontleend aan dichteres en schrijfster Ingeborg Bachmann, vormen de ondertitel van Annik Leroys laatste film tremor. Die zin roept ook een gevoel op dat door al het werk van de Brusselse fotografe en filmmaakster woekert: een gevoel van onverzoenbaarheid, een weigering zich te onderwerpen aan de gewelddaden die onze dagelijkse levens doordringen. Leroys films laten ons voelen hoe geschiedenissen van onderdrukking en onrecht blijven spoken in het heden; hoe hun aanwezigheid niet enkel kan worden waargenomen in de littekens van het fysieke landschap van het hedendaagse Europa, maar ook weergalmt in ontelbare gevallen van geweld en vernietiging die straffeloos aan ons voorbijgaan. Het zijn die nauwelijks waarneembare, dreigende ‘tremoren’ die onze alledaagse levens en interpersoonlijke relaties aanhoudend doordringen, die resoneren doorheen de films, video’s en installaties die Leroy sinds 1980 heeft gemaakt. Maar Ingeborg Bachmann en Annik Leroy bieden weerstand tegen die aanhoudende geschiedenis van oorlog en geweld met een utopisch geloof dat Bachmann heeft verwoord als ‘een dag zal komen’.

EN Es ist immer Krieg: these haunting words borrowed from poet and writer Ingeborg Bachmann provide the subtitle for Annik Leroy’s latest film, tremor. But the sentence also brings to bear a sentiment running through all of this Brussels-based photographer and filmmaker’s work: a sense of non-reconciliation, of refusing to resign oneself to the violence permeating our daily lives. Leroy’s films remind us how histories of oppression and injustice continually haunt the present, how their presence is not only hidden in the scars ingrained into the physical landscapes of contemporary Europe but also reverberates in innumerable instances of violence and destruction that slip by with impunity. It’s those barely perceptible, brooding tremors that continually penetrate the everyday lives and interpersonal relationships felt throughout the films, videos and installations of Leroy’s work since 1980. However, Ingeborg Bachmann and Annik Leroy try to counter the continuing history of war and violence with a utopia Bachmann proclaims as ‘a day will come’.

ÉRIC BAUDELAIRE ALSO KNOWN AS JIHADI 2017, DCP, Frans, Engelse ondertitels, 102'
NL Also Known As Jihadi volgt de reis van een jonge man op zijn weg van Frankrijk naar Syrië en weer terug naar Frankrijk, waar hij vastzit voor zijn vermeende toetreding tot IS. Het verhaal is gebaseerd op feitelijke gebeurtenissen en duizenden pagina’s gerechtelijke stukken. Baudelaire past in de film de zogenaamde ‘theorie van het landschap’ (fukeiron in het Japans) toe, waarmee Masao Adachi als coregisseur van de film aka Serial Killer uit 1969 voor het eerst experimenteerde. Adachi is tevens het onderwerp van Baudelaires film The Anabasis of May and Fusako Shigenobu, Masao Adachi, and 27 Years without Images (2011). In Also Known As Jihadi worden de wegen die naar radicalisme leiden gesmeed tot een aaneenschakeling van shots van de landschappen die het hoofdpersonage in zijn leven heeft doorkruist. Zijn biografie wordt niet bepaald door wat hij deed, maar door wat hij zag en stelt in vraag hoe die landschappen de sociale en politieke structuren reflecteren die de achtergrond vormen van een reis van vervreemding en terugkeer.

EN Also Known As Jihadi follows the progress of a young man’s journey from France to Syria and back to France, where he is incarcerated for allegedly joining Daesh. Based on real events and drawn from thousands of pages of judicial documents, this cinematic work employs landscape theory (fukeiron in Japanese). This theory originated in the film aka Serial Killer (1969) co-directed by Masao Adachi, who was the subject of an earlier film work by Baudelaire, The Anabasis of May and Fusako Shigenobu, Masao Adachi, and 27 Years without Images (2011). In Also Known As Jihadi, the character’s paths to radicalism are rendered purely through a series of landscape shots at locations traversed by the subject: a biography determined not by what the subject did, but by what the subject saw, and one that questions how these landscapes reflect the social and political structures that forms the backdrop of this journey of alienation and return.

NL Cinema zed staat garant voor een cinefiel programma met o.m. recente releases, documentaires, jeugdfilms, wereldcinema, filmklassiekers en kortfilmcompilaties afgewisseld met festivals en evenementen. Je kan Cinema zed terugvinden op twee locaties: in stuk en op de Vesaliussite. Van 27 maart t.e.m. 4 april kan je tijdens docville naar documentaires die zowel het hoofd, het oog én het hart aanspreken. Dit jaar krijgt het hart zelfs een centrale plaats op het festival met een focus op het thema liefde. Naast documentaires over dat thema, kunnen bezoekers een liefdesbrief laten schrijven door een liefdesrobot, een taartje vol afrodisiaca proeven en zelfs de ware liefde vinden tijdens de ‘wetenschappelijk onderbouwde’ speeddate. Een andere thematische reeks van deze editie draait rond onderzoeksjournalistiek. De openingsfilm Cold Case Hammarskjöld, over de moord op vn-secretaris Dag Hammarskjöld, is meteen een geweldig voorbeeld van een jarenlang internationaal onderzoek dat tot schokkende resultaten leidt. Verder blijven de competities het kloppende hart van het festival, waarbij de internationale competitie sinds dit jaar de eer heeft zichzelf Academy Award TM Qualifying te noemen.
EN Cinema zed presents an arthouse programme with new releases, documentaries, films for young audiences, world cinema, film classics and short film compilations, intersected with festivals and special events. Cinema zed screens its films on two locations: in stuk and in Vesalius. From March 27 to April 4 Leuven is home to the docville documentary festival: original, intriguing, stimulating films that were made for the big screen. Documentaries that speak to your mind, eyes and heart. This year we focus on the heart by exploring the theme of love. Besides watching documentaries about the topic, visitors can ask a love robot to write a love letter, taste a cake full of aphrodisiacs and find true love during the ‘scientific’ speed date. Another thematic series this year revolves around investigative journalism. The opening film Cold Case Hammarskjold, about the murder of un secretary Dag Hammarskjöld, is a wonderful example of the shocking results years of international research can lead to. The competitions remain at the heart of the festival, and since this year we have the honor of presenting an international competition that is Academy Award TM Qualifying.

NL ‘Alles van waarde is weerloos’, dichtte Lucebert. Het Feest van de Filosofie focust dit jaar op de mens als koorddanser tussen het geslaagde en het mislukte leven. Centraal staat de kwetsbaarheid en de broosheid die de menselijke conditie kenmerken en het eeuwige gestuntel en falen die ons deel zijn. Klassiek wordt dat falen begrepen als een tekort, als zwakheid of als het negatief van succes en roem. ‘Wat me niet doodt, maakt me sterker’, stelde Friedrich Nietzsche nochtans. Mislukkingen leiden in ons persoonlijk leven, maar ook in wetenschap, kunst en cultuur tot nieuwe ontwikkelingen en ongeziene mogelijkheden, tot groei, innovatie en creativiteit. Met falen en opstaan probeert de mens zichzelf steeds te overwinnen om opnieuw beter te doen. Waarom is er dan zo’n taboe rond falen en kwetsbaarheid? We reflecteren over de plaats van kwetsbaarheid, fragiliteit en mislukking, in het leven van alledag, maar evenzeer in domeinen als kunst, literatuur en wetenschap. Om 13:30 geeft de Franse filosoof Jacques Rancière de openingslezing in Aula Andreas Vesalius. Vanaf 16:00 volgen in stuk panelgesprekken en lezingen, gevolgd door een concert van Frederik Croene en een film. Napraten kan in het stukcafé.
EN ‘Everything of value is defenceless,’ wrote Lucebert. This year, Feest van de Filosofie considers the human being as walking a tightrope between a successful or failed life. It focuses on the human condition’s vulnerability and frailty and the eternal bumbling and failure of our lives. Failures in our personal lives, but also in science, art and culture can lead to growth, innovation, creativity, new developments and unseen opportunities.‘Through failure and resurrection’ the human being always tries to overcome themself in order to do better. Why is there such a taboo about failure and vulnerability? We reflect on the place of vulnerability, fragility and failure in everyday life but also in art, literature and science. French philosopher Jacques Rancière gives the opening lecture in Aula Andreas Vesalius at 13.30. Kaïn Walgrave studied at the LUCA School of Arts, Brussels. He lives in Schaarbeek, Brussels and works in Leuven, where he resides in the Cas-co studio’s.

NL Kaïn Walgrave is een beeldend kunstenaar wiens praktijk voornamelijk resulteert in schilderijen, prints, boeken en tekeningen. Aan de basis van zijn werken ligt een sterke fascinatie voor het spel tussen materialen – verf, hars, lijm, solventen, doek en papier – die hij aan de hand van doordachte fysieke en chemische processen op elkaar laat inwerken. Walgrave verzamelt zijn werken, samen met testen, foto’s, voorwerpen en teksten, in een levend archief dat continu duwt tegen de grenzen van zijn eigen ordening. Kaïn Walgrave studeerde vrije beeldende kunsten, atelier grafiek, aan LUCA Brussel. Hij woont in Schaarbeek en werkt in Leuven waar hij resideert in de Cas-co Studio’s. EN Kaïn Walgrave is a visual artist whose practice largely results in paintings, prints, books and drawings. In his work, he expresses a strong fascination for the interplay between materials – paint, resin, glue, solvents, cloth and paper – which he sets out to interact in a series of well-considered physical and chemical processes. Walgrave collects his work together with tests, photos, objects and text materials in a living archive, constantly challenging the limits of its own structuring.
FLORIS VANHOOF °1982, MOL NL Floris Vanhoof is geïnteresseerd in de hybride vorm van muziek, foto en film. Projecties en modulaire synthesizers staan centraal in zijn werk. Zijn inspiratiebronnen zijn de structurele film en de vroege elektronische muziek. Hieruit groeien audiovisuele installaties, expanded cinema performances en muzikale publicaties. In 2015 ontving hij de publieksprijs van de Young Belgian Art Prize. EN Floris Vanhoof is interested in the hybrid form of music, photography and film. Projections and modular synthesizer are central in his oeuvre. Inspired by structural film and early electronic music he makes audiovisual installations, expanded cinema performances and music releases. In 2015 he received the price of the public at the Young Belgian Art Prize.
RIE NAKAJIMA °1976, JAPAN NL Rie Nakajima is een Japanse kunstenaar met focus op installaties en performances die geluid produceren. Haar werk wordt meestal geconcipieerd in directe dialoog met unieke architecturale ruimtes waarbij ze een combinatie van kinetische apparaten en gevonden voorwerpen gebruikt. Nakajima werkt regelmatig samen met David Toop en Pierre Berthet. Haar eerste grootschalige solotentoonstelling vond recent plaats bij IKON Gallery in Birmingham. Gehuld in kleurrijke kostuums toont ze met aanstekelijke, rituele dansen de harmonie tussen dierlijke, menselijke en plantaardige elementen. EN Amanda Piña’s performances are like rituals in which the connectedness and energy between performers and audience are essential. She focuses on dance traditions threatened with extinction. For this performance she was inspired by the hybrid figures that populate the oral and visual traditions of Amerindians. The focus is on bodies in which the animal, human, and vegetable meet and transform.
