INLEIDING INTRODUCTION NL Is er een betere manier om het nieuwe jaar te starten dan met een hele reeks nieuwe creaties? Samen met haar studiegenoten Anna Bentivegna en Ayrton Fraenk en onder de professionele begeleiding van fABULEUS werkt de jonge Leuvense choreograaf en regisseur Zoë Demoustier aan de première van Nesten, een voorstelling voor de allerkleinsten over geborgenheid. Daarnaast exploreren bekende gezichten David Hernandez en Claire Croizé elk op hun manier de relatie tussen dans, muziek en emotionele zeggingskracht. Jan Martens en Marc Vanrunxt gaan op zoek naar de raakvlakken in elkaars werk wat uitmondt in een solo voor Jan Martens die laveert tussen exuberantie en verstilling, tussen Pet Shop Boys en Penderecki. Kom proeven van al dat nieuw dansmateriaal tijdens de eerste weken van het nieuwe jaar. In de Leuvense Schouwburg staan er twee niet te missen voorstellingen op het programma waarin live muziek een leitmotiv vormt. Alain Platel en Fabrizio Cassol gaan aan de slag met het Requiem van Mozart en brengen een stervensproces in beeld, omringd door veertien muzikanten uit verschillende continenten. Na bijna 30 jaar brengt Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker Achterland terug op scène met een nieuwe cast: in deze scharniervoorstelling ontwikkelde ze een originele dansschriftuur vanuit een ongewone combinatie van Györgi Ligeti’s en Eugène Ysaÿes muziek die nog steeds niet aan kracht heeft ingeboet. Een nieuwe artistieke stem die geïnteresseerd is in schriftuur en meer bepaald de relatie tussen dans en architectuur, introduceren we tijdens Artefact: de Marokkaanse choreograaf Radouan Mriziga. EN The new year starts with a series of new works developed in STUK’s studios. Together with her study peers, Anna Bentivegna and Ayrton Fraenk, and under the professional supervision of fABULEUS, Leuven’s young choreographer and director Zoë Demoustier is working on the premiere of Nesten, a performance about protection made for the smallest audience members. David Hernandez and Claire Croizé are now familiar faces in STUK; in diverging ways they both explore the relationship between dance, music and emotional expressiveness. Jan Martens and Marc Vanrunxt look for common ground in each other’s work, resulting in a solo for Jan Martens that navigates between exuberance and silence, between the Pet Shop Boys and Penderecki. Over the coming month, the outcomes of these diverse work processes can be discovered at STUK. In Leuven’s Schouwburg there are two not-to-be-missed performances in which live music forms a leitmotiv. Alain Platel and Fabrizio Cassol set to work with Mozart’s Requiem, portraying death’s process, surrounded by 14 musicians from across the continents. After almost 30 years, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Achterland returns to the stage with a new cast; in this pivotal performance she developed an original dance score from an unusual combination of György Ligeti’s and Eugène Ysaÿe’s music, which still retains its original power today. We introduce a new artistic voice during Artefact festival: the Moroccan choreographer Radouan Mriziga, whose interests lie in writing and the relationship between dance and architecture. Under the title Parallel Crossings, the exhibition explores how everything around us, both close and far away, is forever in motion.

Ze bewegen zich stil en ontrafelen de diepe aard van de mens als bewegend wezen. In 7 brengt Radouan Mriziga zes dansers en een muzikant samen, vertrekkend van de zeven wereldwonderen en hun disproportionele relatie tot het menselijk lichaam. Nog een nieuwe naam om te ontdekken is de Tunesische choreograaf Mohamed Toukabri die in zijn eerste solo op ontwapenende wijze de complexiteit en de rijkdom van zijn identiteit blootlegt. Dat #metoo niet hoeft te resulteren in preutsheid en puritanisme op scène, bewijzen de choreografes Florentina Holzinger en Mette Ingvartsen. Eigengereid en onorthodox ontmantelen ze de mechanismen van de mannelijke blik aan de hand van pornografische beelden in de populaire cultuur. Tot slot geven we een plek aan twee kunstenaars die een toekomst proberen te verbeelden in het licht van de ecologische uitdagingen die ons te wachten staan. Hoe kunnen we de relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving herijken? The School of the Jaguar is een initiatief van de ChileensMexicaanse choreografe Amanda Pina. Zij vindt inspiratie in de verhouding tussen mens, dier en natuur in de voorouderlijke Amerindiaanse cultuur. Sarah Vanhee op haar beurt creëert in Unforetold samen met een jonge generatie kinderen een ruimte waar fictie en magie nog niet verloren zijn.

The artists in this programme are not caught in the throes of current affairs, instead they move silently, unravelling the deep-rooted nature of humankind as a dynamic, ever-moving being. In 7 Radouan Mriziga brings 6 dancers and a musician together to explore the Seven Wonders of the World and their disproportionate relation to the human body. Another new name to discover in this programme is the Tunisian choreographer Mohamed Toukabri; in this first solo he reveals with disarming power the complexity and richness of his identity. Choreographers Florentina Holzinger and Mette Ingvartsen demonstrate that #metoo doesn’t result in prudishness and puritanism on stage. In their own unorthodox way, they each dismantle the mechanisms of the male gaze, exploring the omnipresence of pornographic images in popular culture. Last but not least, we offer the podium to two artists imagining potential futures in light of the ecological challenges that lie ahead. How can we re-evaluate the relationship between humankind and its environment? The School of the Jaguar is an initiative of the Chilean-Mexican choreographer Amanda Piña. Drawing from ancestral Amerindian culture, she finds inspiration in the relationships between humans, animals and nature. In turn, in the performance Unforetold, Sarah Vanhee and seven young collaborators create a space where fiction and magic have not yet been lost.

EN David Hernandez has been studying the fundamental relationship between music and movement for years. In VOX, the voice plays a central role for the first time in his work, and he invites the Brussels sound artist and producer Zoë McPherson to experiment with live recordings of the dancers’ voices and breathing. NL Drie eenzame figuren zijn op zoek naar een thuis. Maar wat betekent dat precies, een ‘thuis’? Is ‘thuis’ een synoniem voor een ‘dak boven je hoofd hebben’? Of betekent ‘dakloos’ toch nog iets anders dan ‘thuisloos’ zijn? Misschien heeft ‘thuis’ eerder te maken met een gevoel en maakt het niet uit of je al dan niet een huis hebt. Nesten is een visuele en fysieke voorstelling over veiligheid, geborgenheid en vriendschap in een kartonnen wereld.

EN Three lonely figures are looking for a home. But what exactly does ‘home’ mean? Is home a synonym for a ‘roof over your head’? Or does not having a roof over your head still mean something other than being homeless? Maybe home is a feeling you have regardless of whether you have a home. Nesten is a visual and physical representation of safety, security, and friendship, all in a cardboard world.

NL Selecties uit Das Wohltemperierte Klavier van Bach, transcripties van zijn koorzangen voor piano en nieuwe composities vormen het muzikale weefsel van Flowers (we are). Voor het eerst werkt Claire Croizé samen met een hedendaagse componist: Matteo Fargion. Drie dansers vertalen die visie in beweging. Speels en lichtjes tegendraads brengen ze een hommage aan de grootmeester van de barok.

EN Flowers (we are) is Claire Croizé’s first time working with a contemporary composer: Matteo Fargion. Selections from the preludes of Bach’s Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, transcripts of his choir for four hands, and new compositions all form the musical fabric. Three dancers translate this vision into motion. They pay homage to the grand master of the baroque in a playful and slightly subversive way.

Drie decennia later omschrijven critici het werk van Jan Martens wel eens als de voortzetting en de opvolging ervan. Wat ontstaat er uit de dialoog tussen beide generaties?

Marc Vanrunxt was part of the early 80s wave of innovative dance that appeared in Flanders seemingly from out of the blue. Three decades later, critics sometimes point to Jan Martens’ work as a continuation and follow-up. What will arise from the dialogue between these two generations?

NL Achterland, voor het eerst opgevoerd in 1990, is een scharniervoorstelling in Anne Teresa De Keersmaekers oeuvre. De choreografe gaf de muzikanten voor het eerst een centrale plaats op de scène en voegde drie mannen toe aan het tot dan eerder vrouwelijke gezelschap. De ongewone combinatie van Györgi Ligeti’s en Eugène Ysaÿes muziek inspireerde De Keersmaeker en de dansers tot een originele dansschriftuur die een delicate balans vindt tussen energieke virtuositeit en vertraging.

EN Achterland is a seminal choreography in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s oeuvre. In this 1990 performance, for the first time, the choreographer gave the musicians a central position on stage and let them play an active role in the overall dynamic. The unusual combination of György Ligeti’s and Eugène Ysaÿe’s music inspired De Keersmaeker and her dancers to create an original dance score with a delicate balance between energetic virtuosity and deceleration.

NL Florentina Holzinger creëert steevast explosieve en brutale performances waarbij ze inspiratie put uit kickboksen, ballet, gewichtheffen of acrobatie. Apollon Musagète doorprikt de normen van de huidige lichaamscultus en stelt vragen rond de rol van de (perfecte) vrouw – wat wil ze? en wat wil het publiek van een vrouw? Ze neemt de esthetiek van het circus over en paste ze toe op de ‘hoge kunst’. Een bizarre fantasie die ons wijst op ons eigen kijkgedrag.

EN Florentina Holzinger invariably creates explosive and brutal performances in which she draws inspiration from disciplined activities such as kickboxing, ballet, weightlifting or acrobatics. Apollon Musagète challenges our current norms about body cultures and questions the role of hte (perfect) woman – what does she want? And what does society expect from a woman? Apollon Musagète takes the aesthetics of circus and applies it to ‘higher art’. A fantasy confronting us with our own viewing habits.

NL In het oeuvre van de Marokkaanse choreograaf Radouan Mriziga staat de relatie tussen dans, bouwen en architectuur centraal. In 7 plaatst Mriziga twee maatstaven tegenover elkaar: de gebouwde wereld, gemaakt om te imponeren, en het ultieme wereldwonder: het menselijke lichaam zelf. Hij verrijkt deze relatie door er mysterie en verbeelding aan toe te voegen. Daarvoor kijkt hij naar de mythologie van de zeven wereldwonderen van de antieke wereld. Deze architecturale en artistieke krachttoeren markeren de overwinning van de mens op zijn fysieke beperkingen.

EN The work of Moroccan choreographer Radouan Mriziga focuses on the relation between dance, construction and architecture. In 7 Mriziga juxtaposes the built world, created to impress and the ultimate wonder of the world: thu human body itself. He enriches this relationship by adding to it both mystery and imagination. For this he looks at the mythology of the seven wonders of the ancient world. These architectural and artistic tours de force mark the victory of human beings over their physical limitations.

EN Through advertising, films, and the internet, we are constantly confronted with images of sexualised bodies. Every form of intimacy is eroticised and commercialised. In a sensual choreography, we see fifteen performers pulsing rhythmically, wrapped in tight blue bodysuits, reducing their bodies to abstract shapes. to come (extended) takes a critical look at the notions of ‘individual sexual freedom’ and the ‘pornification of pleasure’.

NL De Mexicaans-Chileense choreografe Amanda Piña maakt rituele voorstellingen, waarin de verbondenheid en energie tussen performers en publiek essentieel zijn. Ze gelooft dat kunst de kracht heeft om de maatschappij te beïnvloeden. Daarvoor gaat ze op zoek naar danstradities die met uitsterven bedreigd zijn. Specifiek voor deze voorstelling gaat ze aan de slag met de figuren van de jaguar en de slang, in de Amerindiaanse iconografie vaak voorgesteld als hybriden, tussen mens en dier in. Amanda Piña, Linda Samaraweerová en Yoan Sorin kruipen in de huid van die wezens. Gehuld in kleurrijke kostuums brengen ze aanstekelijke, rituele dansen die de harmonie tussen dierlijke, menselijke en plantaardige elementen laten zien. De voorstelling biedt aan de hand van die voorouderlijke kennis een alternatief voor de huidige problematische relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving. Deze voorstelling maakt deel uit van The School of the Jaguar, een tijdelijke ontmoetingsruimte over Amerindiaanse tradities met lezingen, gesprekken, een workshop en healings waarin academische, ervaringsgerichte en lichamelijke kennis gelijkwaardig behandeld worden.

EN The Mexican-Chilean choreographer Amanda Piña believes in the transformative power of art. Her performances are like rituals in which the connectedness and energy between performers and audience are essential. The Jaguar and the Snake is the third part of her project Endangered Human Movements, which focuses on dance traditions threatened with extinction. Amanda Piña, Linda Samaraweerová, and Yoan Sorin employ Amerindian iconography, inspired by the hybrid figures that populate the oral and visual traditions of Amerindians. The focus is on bodies in which the animal, human, and vegetable meet and transform. Can this ancestral knowledge in the form of a contemporary performance offer inspiration in commemorating the problematic relationship between man and his environment? The Jaguar and the Snake is part of The School of the Jaguar, a contemporary meeting space about Amerindian traditions where academic, experience-oriented and bodily knowledge are treated equally in a series of lectures, panel talks, a workshop and healings.

NL De Tunesische performer Mohamed Toukabri beweegt heen en weer tussen heden en verleden, tussen twee landen, twee culturen en twee tradities. Toukabri onderzoekt het concept ‘tussenruimte’, een mysterieuze en filosofische zone ergens tussen zijn verwesterde moslimachtergrond in Tunis en het wereldburgerschap dat Europese hedendaagse dans hem biedt. Met zijn persoonlijk verhaal raakt Toukabri universele thema’s aan als identiteit, shock, veranderen en de eeuwige ontdekkingstocht.

EN The Tunisian performer and dancer Mohamed Toukabri moves back and forth between the past and the present, between two countries, two cultures and two traditions. Toukabri investigates the concept of ‘in-between space’, a mysterious and philosophical zone between a westernized Muslim background in Tunis and the citizen-of-the-world status that European contemporary dance offers him. With this personal story Toukabri tells something about universals themes like identity, shock, change and the eternal power of discovery.

The artists in this exhibition move quietly and unravel the deeper nature of mankind as a species in constant motion. Through factual and imaginary movements in time and space, worlds find their ever-changings forms.

DANSTHEORIE TRANSFORMING RELATIONS NL In samenwerking met het Departement Culturele Studies organiseert STUK het vak ‘Contemporary Dance & Dance Studies’. Het vak is opgevat als een introductie tot de hedendaagse dans, in theorie en praktijk. Dit jaar wordt er specifiek ingezoomd op het thema gender. De lessenreeks wordt op 26 april afgesloten met een symposium Transforming Relations dat zowel gerenommeerde sprekers uit de dansstudies en gerelateerde theoretische velden, praktijk-experten en een geïnteresseerd publiek samenbrengt.
