ALONE TOGETHER NL Het voorjaar staat traditio neel in het teken van Artefact dat naast een thematische expo ook een uitgebreid muziekprogram ma omvat. Geïnspireerd door het expothema ‘Alone Together’ focust Artefact Sound op eenzaamheid en samenhorigheid in relatie tot geluid. Vele muzikanten zoals het Noorse art popfenomeen Jenny Hval en het Franse neogabbercollectief Casual Gabberz leggen de nadruk op de verbindende kracht van muziek. Het Gentse gezelschap De zwarte zusters gaat zelfs zo ver dat ze vijf dagen lang samen performen om een hechtere groep te worden. Anderzijds kan muziek ook een uitlaatklep zijn voor eenzaam heid en het onvermogen om te communiceren. Zo brengen Kevin Martin (The Bug) en spoken word kunstenaar Roger Robinson onder de naam King Midas Sound een hart verscheurende klaagzang over een zaamheid en verlies. Vervreemding staat ook centraal op de gratis ope ning night: naast wervelende per formances van Eartheater en Céline Gillain, gaat freejazzsaxofonist Mette Rasmussen in dialoog met een vlie gende drone (Drone Operat r). Naar goede gewoonte legt STUK residentietrajecten af met geluidskunstenaars die buiten de lijntjes kleuren. Zo creëert componist Christina Vantzou een installatieperformance waarin klank, ruimte en architectuur samensmelten. De relatie tussen elektronische muziek en video wordt dan weer onder de loep genomen door het New Yorkse cultfenomeen James Ferraro
3 EN Spring is traditionally dominat ed by Artefact, which includes both an exhibition and extensive music programme. Inspired by the exhibi tion theme ‘Alone Together’, Artefact Sound focuses on loneliness and to getherness in relation to sound. Many musicians, including Norwegian art-pop phenomenon Jenny Hval and French neo-gabber collective Casual Gabberz, will emphasise music’s connecting power. Ghent’s de zwarte zusters even go so far as to perform together for five days to become a tighter-knit group. Conversely, music can also be an outlet for loneliness and the inability to communicate. Under the name King Midas Sound, Kevin Martin (The Bug) and spoken word artist Roger Robinson perform a poignant lament on loneliness and loss. The theme of alienation takes centre stage at the free opening night. In addition to pulsating per formances by Eartheater and Céline Gillain, free jazz saxophonist Mette Rasmussen enters into dialogue with a flying drone (Drone Operat r). As usual, STUK undertakes residency programmes with sound artists who colour outside the lines. Composer Christina Vantzou creates an installation performance, merg ing sound, space and architecture. New York cult phenomenon James Ferraro and the audio-visual duo Vigroux & d’Haeseleer examine the relationship between electron ic music and video. Furthermore, Audiostories (together with Het nieuwstedelijk) explores new con nections between text and music
en het audiovisueel duo Vigroux & d’Haeseleer. Verder exploreert Audiostories (samen met Het nieuwstedelijk) nieuwe verbindingen tussen tekst en muziek in de vorm van een zondagse luisternamiddag. Ten slotte gaat bijzondere aandacht naar de jongste generatie en de Belgische scène. Met de gratis caféconcerten (Echo Beatty, PAARD.) en Art Of Sound van het Leuvense Conservatorium, biedt STUK een podium aan de nieuwe lichting. De top van de Belgische underground is dan weer goed vertegenwoordigd met bands als Rumours en Fornet en experimentalisten als Ben Bertrand en Hantrax. En zeiden we al dat Dijf Sanders zijn nieuwe, door Nepal geïn spireerde album komt voorstellen? Nog dit: het zal je niet ontgaan zijn dat de Vlaamse Overheid in 2020 6% bespaart op de middelen van STUK en 60% op de projectsubsidies van kunstenaars. Hierdoor komen (geluids)kunstenaars en muzikanten steeds meer onder druk te staan, wat tevens een impact heeft op de hele culturele sector. Om aan te geven hoe belangrijk die projectsubsidies zijn voor STUK markeren we alle concerten waarvoor projectsubsidies werden aangevraagd met geel in deze brochure. Gilles Helsen Programmator Geluid
4 in the form of a Sunday afternoon listening session. Finally, we spotlight young emerging talent and the Belgian scene. STUK provides a platform for this new generation with the free cafe concerts (Echo Beatty, PAARD.) and Art Of Sound from the Leuven Conservatory. The bands Rumours and Fornet and experimentalists Ben Bertrand and Hantrax represent the cream of Belgium’s underground scene. And did we already say that Dijf Sanders is coming to present his new album, inspired by Nepal? One more thing: you probably heard that the Flemish Government cuts 6% of STUK’s operating funds and 60% of the project funds for artists in 2020. This means (sound) artists and musicians are under increasing pressure, which has an impact on the entire cultural sector.
