—E Works in Silence offers insight into a decisive development phase of Lucinda Childs, one of the most important choreographers of the 20th century. Ty Boomershine was able to win Childs for a collaboration as a long-time dancer of her company. Six dancers of the DANCE ON Ensemble present a collection of works that have not been shown since 1970’s. Now they are brought together in a unique evening programme, in world premiere at Playground Festival.

—N Works in Silence biedt een unieke inkijk in het vroege werk van choreografe Lucinda Childs, een icoon van de 20ste eeuwse dansgeschiedenis. Ty Boomershine, langdurig danser van Childs’ gezelschap, wist haar te winnen voor een samenwerking. Zes dansers van het DANCE ON Ensemble brengen met Works in Silence een collectie van haar vroege choreografieën, in de jaren 70 gepresenteerd in musea, kerken en de openbare ruimte. Nu worden ze samengebracht in een unieke avond, in wereldpremière op Playground.

—N In Echo’s Bones / Were Turned to Stone lig je met een koptelefoon op een handgeknoopt wollen tapijt dat door de kunstenaar ontworpen werd. Je hoort een vrouwelijk personage dat haar gedachten lijkt te ordenen in een keten van eindeloze associaties, referenties en feiten. Ze is gefascineerd door anekdotes uit het leven van dode kunstenaars, schrijvers, acteurs, zangers, filmregisseurs en componisten. Haar eindeloze opsommingen worden afgewisseld met gezucht, gekreun en feitelijke beschrijvingen van de werking van het menselijk lichaam of de toestand van de planeet. Zo lang ze praat, bestaat ze. —E In Echo’s Bones / Were Turned to Stone you lie with headphones on a hand-knotted wool carpet designed by the artist. You hear a female character who appears to be ordering her thoughts through a seemingly infinite succession of associations, references and facts. She is fascinated by anecdotes from the lives of dead artists, authors, actors, singers, film directors and composers. Her endless enumerations alternate with sighs and groans, which in turn transition into factual descriptions of the functioning of the human body or the condition of the planet. As long as she speaks, she exists.

—N In een innemende en ironische voorstelling die met opera flirt, stelt Marijke De Roover onze stereotiepe denkbeelden over liefde in vraag. Haar blik richt zich op de popu laire cultuur zoals popsongs, karaoke, musical, Disney en romcoms – en hoe daarin de liefde wordt verbeeld en bezongen. In De Roovers universum voldoet de liefde niet aan sociale en culturele normen en verwachtingspatronen, maar kent ze net vele verschijningsvormen. Dominante ideeën over man-vrouwrelaties, moederschap, seksuele identiteit en voortplanting komen in een hoog tempo voorbij en worden via citaten uit musicals, opera en film fijntjes gedemonteerd. —E In a captivating and ironic performance that flirts with opera, Marijke De Roover questions our stereotypical conception of love. She focuses on expressions of popular culture such as pop songs, karaoke, musicals theatre, Disney and rom coms – and the ways in which they depict and musicalize love. In De Roover’s universe, love does not conform to social and cultural norms and expectations, but rather manifests itself in many different ways. Dominate conceptions of gender, motherhood, sexual identity and procreation are dealt with in quick succession, and each is deconstructed using quotations from musicals, opera and film. —N Kan je vrije tijd uitgeven? Wanneer ben je op dat vlak een big spender? Hou je van werken? En hoe staat het met je work-life balance? SPARE TIME WORK is een totaalinstal latie waarin het collectief buren beelden, tekst en geluid creëert. Het duo neemt sociale realiteiten en economische krachten onder de loep die inwerken op de concepten vrije tijd en werk. In een associatieve en muzikale vertelling linken ze persoonlijke herinneringen aan de geschiedenis van vrijetijdsbesteding en arbeid, de evolutie van vrouwenarbeid en de representatie van de (niet) werkende vrouw in de kunstgeschiedenis. —E Can you ‘spend’ spare time? When is one a big spender? How do you ‘spend’ spare time? Is work something you love? What makes a good work-life balance? SPARE TIME WORK is an installation in which the collective buren constructs images, text and sound. Through poetic and political fantasies they reflect on the past and future of leisure and work. In an associative and musical narrative, they link personal memories to the history of leisure activities and work, the evolution of women’s work and the representation of the (non)working woman in art history.
—N Alexis Gautier neemt je tijdens Playground mee in de auto. Je verkent samen met iemand uit je bubbel de Leuvense binnenring tijdens een unieke rit van 15 minuten. Je wordt uitgenodigd om de bewegende stad te beleven als een film. De auto wordt daarbij een soort camera, die telkens hetzelfde traject aflegt in loop, zoals een filmrol die blijft ronddraaien op zijn spoel. Projectie, fictie en verhaal staan centraal in deze unieke voorstelling in de vroege ochtend en bij het vallen van de avond. —E During Playground, Alexis Gautier will take you on a car drive. Along with someone from your social bubble, you will explore the Leuven ring road on a unique 15-minute journey. You are invited to experience the moving city as a film, with the car as a camera. It will repeatedly travel the same route in a loop, in the same way that a film reel spins around its spool. This performance focuses on projection, fiction and narrative both at the rising and setting of the sun.

Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine – A book on reading, writing, memory and forgetting in a library of living books
—N Enkele mensen leren een boek uit het hoofd en vormen samen een levende biblio theek. Deze ‘boeken’ wandelen rond in de bib, praten met elkaar of staren naar buiten … klaar om uitgeleend te worden. De bezoeker kiest een ‘boek’ dat hem/haar naar een plek brengt waar het boek ‘gelezen’ wordt. Het idee voor deze levende bibliotheek komt uit de sf-roman Fahrenheit 451 (1953) van Ray Bradbury. De roman speelt zich af in een futuris tische maatschappij waarin boeken verboden zijn. Leden van een ondergrondse verzetsbeweging leren daarom boeken uit het hoofd om ze te bewaren voor de toekomst.
—N Time has fallen asleep… (zie p. 8) begon tien jaar geleden i.h.k.v. Playground en werd toen gecoproduceerd door STUK en 30CC (Dubbelspel). De eerste, uitgebreide reeks in bibliotheek Tweebronnen in 2010 was de start van een wereldwijde tournee die nog steeds loopt. Samen met een redactieteam stelde Mette Edvardsen een mooie publicatie samen over dit project met achttien teksten van kunstenaars en theoretici. Vandaag wordt het boek voorgesteld aan het publiek, samen met een aantal van de betrokken auteurs. Meer info over het boek op www.playgroundfestival.be.
—E A group of people memorises a book. Together they form a ‘living library’. The ‘books’ walk around, talk to each other, stare outside … and are ready to be ‘read’ by a visitor. The library visitor chooses a ‘living book’ that takes its reader to a quiet place where the ‘book’ will be recited to the visitor. This ‘library of living books’ is inspired by Ray Bradbury’s science fiction novel Fahrenheit 451 which describes a future society in which books are banned because they are considered dangerous. In the book, an underground resistance movement arises with its members memorising books for their future preservation.
—E Time has fallen asleep… (see p. 8) began a decade ago within the context of Playground and was then co-produced by 30CC and STUK (Dubbelspel). Subsequently we organised an extended version, which instigated the start of a worldwide tour that still continues today. Mette Edvardsen, together with an editorial team, put together a nice publication about this project with eighteen texts by artists and theorists. Today the book will be presented to the public, along with some of the involved authors. More info about the book via www.playgroundfestival.be.

—N Van kunstenaar tot museumdirecteur, hoe vinden vrouwen een plek in de kunstwereld? Het bordspel Art & My Career nodigt ons uit om in hun schoenen te kruipen, om hun werkomstandigheden en hun strijd beter te begrijpen. Welke carrière kies jij? Kunst historicus, galeriehouder, kunstpedagoog, professor, kunstenaar, museumdirecteur of curator? De spelsessies en collectieve discussie worden zowel geleid door bemiddelaars als door de kunstenaar. —E From Artist to Museum Director, how do women manage to find a place in the artworld? The game Art & My Career invites us to put ourselves in their shoes in order to better understand their work conditions and their struggle. Which career will you choose? Art Historian, Gallerist, Art Educator, Professor, Artist, Museum Director or Curator? This game is addressed to both women and men in order to think together about this essential question in a playful way. The game sessions and collective discussion will be led by mediators as well as the artist.
—N De laatste zeven jaar van mijn leven was ik een indringer. Ongevraagd en ongenodigd stapte ik verschillende bijeenkomsten binnen om er te praten over hoe we als mensen samenleven, over hoe de samenleving een co-creatie is van ieder-een. Met mijn guerilla speech probeerde ik van elke meeting een politiek moment te maken. Op die manier verraste ik meer dan 10.000 mensen. Telkens herhaalde ik dezelfde woorden en ik noemde het Lecture For Every One. Nu wil ik dat verhaal delen. Het is een verhaal over wat het betekent om je uit te spreken, vandaag. —E The last seven years of my life, I was an intruder. Unasked and uninvited, I walked into several meetings to talk about how we live together as people, how society is a cocreation of every-one. With my guerrilla speech, I tried to make every meeting a political moment. That way, I surprised over 10.000 people, disturbing their daily routing with small and big life questions. I always repeated the same words, and called it Lecture For Every One. Now I want to share that story of words, love, violence and connection. About people, alone and together. It’s a story about what it means to express yourself, today.

Premonitions
—N Dit filmprogramma brengt een selectie van kunstenaars die reflecteren over onze politieke, sociale, economische en ecologische realiteit. Ze doen dat vanuit een veelheid aan perspectieven; van feministisch over transhistorisch tot dekoloniaal. Onze kwetsbaarheid en vergankelijkheid staat meer dan ooit centraal in onze veranderende samenleving van de afgelopen maanden. Door middel van dans of bewegingen introduceren deze kunstenaars nieuwe vormen van solidariteit en tonen ze hoe we duurzame connecties met elkaar kunnen aangaan. —E This film programme presents a selection of artists who reflect on our political, social, economic and ecological reality. They each do this from a variety of perspectives; ranging from feminist and trans-historical to decolonial. Our vulnerability and transience have become ever more pertinent in our changing society over the past few months. Through dance and movement, these artists introduce new forms of solidarity and the ways in which we can forge durable connections with one another.

—N Gefotografeerde fragmenten van landschappen en geluidsextracten uit de natuur lijke omgeving komen samen in een donkere tentoonstellingsruimte. Op het ritme van wisselende dia’s veranderen beelden en worden schermen verplaatst in een voortdurend evoluerende compositie. Door het tempo in haar performances te vertragen – het zelfs bijna stil te leggen – wil de kunstenaar zichzelf en de toeschouwer uit de dagelijkse versnelling trekken. In de collectieve concentratie die ze creëert, is er tijd voor een andere manier van kijken.
—N Een tiental seconden is de gemiddelde tijd die een museumbezoeker over heeft voor een kunstwerk. In 11 seconds bekijkt Charlotte Bouckaert samen met haar publiek een voorstelling lang één foto: een buitenaanzicht van het Guggenheim Museum in New York. Die foto is het vertrekpunt van een speelse verkenning van onze manier om naar kunst te kijken. Eerst en vooral wil 11 seconds een ode zijn: aan de kunst zelf, aan kunstenaars en aan onze moeizame pogingen om iets zinnig te zeggen over kunst.
—E Photographed fragments of landscapes and audio extracts of the natural world coalesce in a dark exposition space. To the rhythm of alternating slides, images transform and screens move in a constantly changing composition. By slowing down the pace of her performances – or even bringing it to a complete stop – the artist seeks to remove herself and the audience from the acceleration of daily life. She wants to create a collective concentration in which there is time to see things in a new way.
—E Ten seconds is the average length of time a museum visitor looks at an artwork. For the duration of the performance 11 seconds, Charlotte Bouckaert and her audience look at a single photograph: an exterior view of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. That photograph is the starting point for a playful exploration of our ways of looking at art. First and foremost, 11 seconds is an ode: to art itself, to artists and to our strained attempts to say something meaningful about art.

—N Presentatie van de nieuwe digitale publicatie Conversations in Vermont: Steve Paxton van Myriam Van Imschoot en Tom Engels. Die online publicatie- en onderzoekstool, met 11 uur aan interviews, belicht de vroege periode (1958-1972) van de veelgeprezen Amerikaanse experimentele danser en choreograaf Steve Paxton, voorafgaand aan de ontwikkeling van de Contact Improvisatie. The publication gives an unique insight into the life and work of a key figure of one of the most important artistic movements of the twentieth century.

It was perceived as a great opportunity for people who had lost everything during the stock market crash of 1929. The public placed bets on who would last the longest. Judges ensured that rules were followed: those no longer in motion were disqualified. Where did our love go? is a choreography for two couples on the brink of collapse.

—N In Sideshow verschijnen en verdwijnen — in een abstract decor met veelkleurig licht — een reeks vermomde figuren, zoals een geisha, een clown, vogelmensen en een illusionist met grote handen. In de filmische beelden, die in stop-motion werden opgenomen met verschillende performers, keert Ana Torfs terug naar enkele oude voorliefdes: theater, stille film, poppenkast, butoh, circus, maskerade en cabaret. De parade is tegelijk macaber, ontroerend, angstaanjagend en komisch. —E In Sideshow, a series of disguised figures, including a geisha, a clown, bird people and an illusionist with big hands, appear and disappear against an abstract backdrop with multicoloured light. In the cinematic images, recorded in stop-motion with various performers, Ana Torfs returns to a few old favourites: theatre, silent film, puppet theatre, butoh, circus, masquerade and cabaret. The parade is at once macabre, moving, terrifying and comical.

—E A world ruled by structures and systems where performance is key, optimisation forms a constant preoccupation and gamification is used as a means to drive up participation … All these properties defining society today were first explored by Ericka Beckman in her films in the early 1980s, long before the introduction of social media and virtual interaction. At M, Ericka Beckman presents her first 16 mm film You The Better (1983) within a fully immersive environment, and her new film Reach Capacity (2020), shown in world premiere.

Al die aspecten onderzocht Ericka Beckman voor het eerst in haar films uit de vroege jaren 80, nog lang voordat sociale media en virtuele interactie hun intrede deden. In M toont Ericka Beckman haar eerste 16 mm-film You The Better (1983) in een ruimte die je onderdompelt in haar werk. Daarnaast zie je in deze tentoonstelling haar nieuwste film Reach Capacity (2020) in wereldpremière.

— N Playground biedt jaarlijks een platform aan kunstenaars die zich niet aan één discipline binden, kunstenaars die werken op het raakvlak tussen podium en beeldende kunsten. Binnen het programma van dit unieke kunstenfestival versmelten performance, installatie, film en choreografie tot uitdagende performances die objecten en lichamen samenbrengen. Een aantal kunstenaars uit vorige edities brengen nieuw werk naar Playground: Mette Edvardsen, Evelien Cammaert, Sarah Vanhee en buren. In M zijn installaties te zien van Ericka Beckman en Ana Torfs, en een filmprogramma samengesteld door gastcurator Maria Inés Rodriguez. Playground brengt daarnaast (Belgische) premières van Charlotte Bouckaert, DANCE ON Ensemble / Lucinda Childs, Marijke De Roover en Emilie Pitoiset. Alexis Gautier neemt je mee op een unieke autorit op de Leuvense ring. Het festival is ook dit jaar opnieuw een vrijplaats voor experiment. Uiteraard passen we onze presentaties aan om alles te laten verlopen volgens de regels rond afstand en hygiëne. — E Every year Playground offers a platform to artists who are not committed to one single discipline, artists who work at the intersection between performing and visual arts.
