TRANSITIONING TO A LOW-CARBON ECONOMY THE SOCIAL LICENSE TO OPERATE FOR MINING AND RECYCLING OF CRITICAL METALS

ARTEFACT SYMPOSIUM

Cleantech solutions are becoming more and more important in the transition towards a low-carbon economy. In this, the extraction and recycling of critical metals is essential. But what with the image of the material industry? Is responsible mining in- and outside Europe a realistic dream? In this one-day symposium, we dig deeper into the negative image of primary industries, looking for solutions together with experts. Can primary mining companies obtain and maintain a Social License to Operate? Or should we invest more in recycling industries and circular economies? Whichever way we go, a more fine-tuned connection between the energy transition and material transition seems crucial. The morning program illuminates how a global topic can become tangible on a local level. What are the future prospectives on energy and material requirements? How do we deal with the ‘Not In My BackYard’-attitude vis-à-vis (primary and urban) mining? In which ways can citizens and local actors contribute? The afternoon program focuses on the global scene. How can the primary mining sector clean up its act in- and outside Europe? Can mining companies obtain and maintain a Social License to Operate? What is the relation between primary mining of critical metals and recycling of End-of-Life products? Can recycling replace or merely complement primary mining? Which policies are required in Europe to support the recycling industry and how does this relate to the Circular Economy vision? Which impact does this have on the overall North-South relation?

THIS SYMPOSIUM TAKES PLACE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EXHIBITION AND FESTIVAL ARTEFACT 2018: THIS RARE EARTH — STORIES FROM BELOW AND WILL OFFER THE PARTICIPANTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE UNIQUE, RARE-EARTH RELATED ARTWORK THAT WILL BE EXHIBITED.
