Brief The brief was focused on the idea of Sustainibility. The brief has three parts which in different ways aim for the purpose of saving the enviornment, Reconstruction, zero/minimum waste garment and upcycling. For the reconstruction i chose a denim shrug and converted it to a top. For the zero waste garment I used oragami as my inspiration and transfered those folds to a 2 meter fabric. The upcycled garment was made with fabrics sourced from kabadi marke, okhla. All these steps are different ways to maintain sustanibility which reflects throuh out the brief.

Capsule Closet

Capsule closet is a change in lifestyle, where we fix ourseleves to a fixed number of clothes and accessories for a month, and the rule stays we need to wear only those clothes through out the time decided.

Visit to Goonj Since 1999, Goonj has built a network of communities from urban to village India, channelizing material as a tool to address crucial gaps in rural infrastructure, water, environment, livelihood, education, health, disaster relief and rehabilitation. Its engagement with both the urban and rural population has galvanized a mass civic participation in addressing basic but neglected issues. Goonj’s model of development implemented through its various Initiatives proposes a more inclusive alternative economy where everyone is an equal stakeholder in the process. Goonj envisions to grow as an idea across regions, economies and countries using urban discard as a tool to alleviate poverty and enhance the dignity of the poor in the world. Address basic but neglected issues of the poor by involving them in evolving their own solutions with dignity and urban material as reward.

When we visited the NGO we came across different sections, people donate clothes to the ngo are segragated based on gender and size, they prefer clothes that are in good condition in order to maintain repect to the person who recieves it. They also prepare kits whhich include essentials as well as occasional things also for natural disasters for example they have marriage kits which

has a lehnga for the bride made out of dupatas and other things that are required for a bride. They also have sanitary kits which have a sanitary napkins made o cottpn katran and an underwear in a hand made pouch. they reuse the damaged clothes to create katran to fill in blankets.

Upcycling To recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item : to create an object of greater value from (a discarded object of lesser value) is upcycing, here I upcycled a shrug to a top in my size keeping in mind there is no wastage.

Ideation

First ideation was a low back halter talk

One shoulder off asymetrical top with straps joining the back to the front

Final Fi ing

Changed the shrug to a off shoulder top with one flared sleeve and straps over the back to hold th.e garment. I tried it on myself as it was supposed to be in my size, while it was pinned not stiched to adjust the legnth of the straps to tighten the garment. Finishing of the garment was a bit tough.

BIO - MIMICIKING biomimicry is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.[

For a long time, our economy has been ‘linear’. This means that raw materials are used to make a product, and after its use any waste (e.g. packaging) is thrown away. In an economy based on recycling, materials are reused. For example, waste glass is used to make new glass and waste paper is used to make new paper. To ensure that in the future there are enough raw materials for food, shelter, heating and other necessities, our economy must become circular. That means preventing waste by making products and materials more efficiently and reusing them. If new raw materials are needed, they must be obtained sustainably so that the natural and human environment is not damaged.

Sarah Jane Fergu on

Sarah Jane Fergusson has won the Redress Design Award 2018 Special Prize with Cara G. She holds a degree in Bespoke Tailoring from the London College of Fashion. Currently based in Tokyo, Japan, she has built her own brand of handcrafted bespoke garments AMAUD, and is working to create sustainable collections that can compete within today's fashion industry. For her Redress Design Award submission, Sarah Jane applies the design technique of reconstruction to vintage silk kimonos sourced from flea markets in Kyoto, transforming them into modern silhouettes. Her collection is inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘Mottainai’ which roughly translates as ‘too good to waste’.

Christpher Reaburn

Raeburn has become known for the ethical integrity of his work, although he admits it was never his intention.[6] American Vogue's August 2010 issue highlighted Raeburn's contribution to all things green with the advice to "Remember the four R's – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Raeburn", accompanied by a Mario Testino shoot of Blake Lively wearing a Raeburn Duffle Coat. After viewing his Autumn/Winter 2011 London Fashion Week presentation at the disused Aldwych tube station, Style.com stated, "it's not unreasonable to assert that Christopher Raeburn is the single most radical designer working today".

Maison Margiela

Many in the fashion media contended that the anonymity was a publicity stunt, although Maison Martin Margiela asserted that Margiela's anonymity was a reaction to an overly commercialized fashion industry[16][failed verification] and a genuine attempt to return the focus of fashion to the clothing, and not the personas behind it.[20] The press dubbed Margiela the Greta Garbo of fashion as a result, a reference to Garbo's similar avoidance of the spotlight,[14][8] and in 2008 the New York Times called Margiela "fashion's invisible man."

Brainstorming the words i could relate to to take out keywords for the range i neededx to ideate. ‘Solitary Flaws’ is an inspiration i took from the moon, and what all can be done to embrace it and value it and what all cam relate to the same phenomenon.

Relating the word ‘solitary’ with the arts aspect i reached to a certain range of keywords to be depicted in the garment range that has to be designed, contrast, crecent, unique and dark.

many shapes

Using the shapes as they part, innovating the shapes in an unique placement, incorporate embroidery, use materials of same weight. Pleats to show depth The moon inspires me with its solitary nature. It shines alone in the dark, seen in so many forms that facinates my imagination. The contrast it reflects because of the moon caves and pits, the depth it displays give rise to inovation in various ways. Using fashion techniques i will depict these features in my garment.

SOLITARY EXPERIENCE

A mood of solitation, trapped, depth and dark contrast is evoked through this mood board.

Experience to the kabadi market was different, it took time to find the exact material i required, not only fabric but we can source threads, anchor threads and trims in the market. My bargaining skills were polished here.

iterating through drapes with the sourced fabric to represent the ideology of representing the shapes of moon, in this i have used velvet to give a depiction of the moon’s texture.

final fi ing

Concept Taking the moon as the inspiration, incorporating the textures, colours, shapes of the phases of moon, including crescent and half, crescent being the protagonist, the garment is constructed. The moon is a solitary aspect in the night sky, spreading its light and marking its importance. It does not fear the desolation but uses that in a positive way, standing alone beautifully and alluring us. This aspect also relates and fulfils the idea of up cycling, using the discarded waste material to create wonders. The moon has marks and has unusual grooves, which on the contrary serves as an aesthetic rather than a surface full of faults. The moon is a self relating aspect for me which made the process more inspiring.
