NO G OR E-T E X . NO V E LC RO. NO M A S S PRODUC T ION . For anyone who doesn’t want to look like a sad golfer lost in town, here are raincoats for you. Plain, simple and understatedly stylish, they are updated versions of the traditional raincoats worn by generations of Swedish fisherman (and the odd, grumpy movie director) until it fell into oblivion when rain gear was eclipsed by the sportswear industry. We make each coat full heartedly, with the highest quality in each seam and an anti-depressant attitude letting the owner embrace both melancholy and rain. The ambition is to create the only raincoat you’ ll ever need. Whether you’re about town or in the country. Whether it’s a drizzle or a downpour. Whether you’re battling with the forces of nature or just your own inner demons. Alexander Stutterheim Stockholm on a rainy day in June, 2013.

STO C K HOL M LÅNG Many have asked for this long coat. And, after some intense work, we have now created a longer raincoat that we are happy with. The Stockholm Lång coat is not just a longer Stockholm or Arholma coat, it is a totally new cut, allowing one to be fully protected when the storm and downpour hits you. Designed and developed by Alexander Stutterheim and former chief designer at Yamamoto; Mrs Kumij Edström Kawaji. Together they created this model as a understated, simple yet stylish unisex coat in the same fabric as the Stockholm. Available in matte black only.
AR H O LM A Using the finest craftsmanship, materials and detailing, the Arholma is a state of the art version of the traditional raincoat worn by generations of Swedish fishermen (and the occasional genius film director). It is designed in Sweden and hand sewn at our factory in Europe by one of our skilled seamstresses. To meet our high standards and to guarantee that every coat is 100% wind and water proof, every single seam is carefully sealed with tape. Finally, each coat is individually controlled, numbered and signed by the seamstress who has sewn it.

ARV I D Made with the utmost attention to material and detail in a classic cut inspired by granddad’s old city coat. This is the Stutterheim version of an all-weather coat that can be worn both in heavy rain and on a sunny day. It’s made from a heavy-duty, specially waxed-cotton fabric (the same as Lydia) and has an exclusive cotton lining. Turn up the collar, embrace the moment of solitude while you are graced with the sparse light from a nearby lamppost and wait for your loved one. Your Lydia perhaps. If she doesn’t arrive you can walk away with pride, wearing the coolest raincoat around. Embracing inner and outer demons has never looked better.

LY D I A Lydia is a luxurious rain cape taking its inspiration from the Stockholm novel The Serious Game, Den allvarsamma leken, by Hjalmar Söderberg. A melancholic, beautiful, romantic drama with Lydia Stille and Arvid Stjärnblom as the loving couple striving to create a life together. It was my granddad’s favourite novel and I remember him reading it in front of the fireplace with tears in his eyes. The Stutterheim rain cape Lydia is handmade with classic, iconic ambitions, using a special waxed-cotton fabric from a factory in northern Italy. It’s stunning we think. Simplistic, sleek and classic with a modern expression for the urban, melancholic woman. We love Lydia as much as Arvid did.
T H E LOM A N U M BR E LLA The Loman umbrella from Stutterheim is handmade, windproof and specially developed together with the last umbrella factory still standing in northern Europe; Dalarnas Paraplyfabrik. The Loman umbrella has a matte black rubberized coated crook, fabric in matte black pongee and glass fibre ribs. The same sleek design as our other products, and with an understated style, you will now have an umbrella to protect you in style even in the worst of downpours.
R AV LU N DA We found a deadstock of really hardcore, super quality rubberboots from 1979 in a military depot. We bought all of them (300 pairs) and they sold like hot cakes in our rain shop in Stockholm. After thorough research we found one factory that matched the standards we set to re-make these rubberboots; less dry cracking plastic and more actual rubber that stays fresh and waterproof, handmade as far as possible, classic details and a comfy fit. And so it was that we ended up with Stutterheim’s Rubberboots Ravlunda, named after the landscape in the south of Sweden where my granddad did his military service. With canvas lining, retro yet urban chic style and numbered like the rest of our products. They are not cheap. But they are the best rubberboots you will ever find.
M E L A N C HOLY & C R E AT I V I T Y Feeling blue inspires creativity. What if August Strindberg, Ingmar Bergman, Karin Boye and hundreds of other famous Swedish artists had felt happy all the time? Would they have produced their fantastic work? No. Being melancholic is an essential part of being a human. If we try too hard to get rid of melancholy it’s almost like we’re settling for a half-life. To embrace melancholy is ultimately to embrace joy. Melancholy shouldn’t be confused with depression. Melancholy is an active state. When we’re melancholic, we feel uneasy with the way things are, the status quo, the conventions of our society. We yearn for a deeper, richer relationship with the world. And in that yearning, we’re forced to explore the potential within ourselves – a potential we might not have explored if we were simply content. We come up with new ways of seeing the world and new ways of being in the world. Melancholy and creativity go together like ebony and ivory on a piano. Let’s embrace Swedish melancholy. Embracing rain is a good start.
