be an awesome
PCS season is upon us, and, as most of us know, moving is never a totally smooth experience. That’s why being a good sponsor is so important to ensure that incoming service members, families, & civilians arrive in Stuttgart with as little stress and complication as possible.
How can I be an awesome sponsor, you ask? Well, Stuttgart Army Lodging is here to help you assist arrivals into their new community! The Stuttgart Lodging Program has 2 hotels, the Panzer & Kelley Hotel. Both are in high demand, especially during early spring through early summer (PCS Season).
STEP 1: MAKE RESERVATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Don’t wait for orders, make reservations right away. Reservations can be motified prior to your sponsored party’s arrival date.
STEP 2: GET AN ACCURATE NUMBER OF GUESTS AND PETS. Please ensure that you reserve the room based on how many adults, children, & pets are in the party, as this will guide what type of room and amenities (cribs, rollaways) they will need. Reservations should be made for at least 60 nights if the sponsored party is living off post (90 nights for civilians). Please contact us immediately if there are any changes to the arrival date, as they’ll not only be charged as a no-show, but their reservation will be cancelled.
STEP 3: TELL US THEIR EXPECTED ARRIVAL TIME. We know first-hand that everyone arrives exhausted from their travels! We want their check-in experience to be as painless as possible. With this in mind, please know that due to our high demand and turnover requirements, early check-ins are rare. Normal check-in time is 3 p.m. If the sponsored party needs an ealry check-in, we recommend you make their reservations the night before. Be sure to notify the front desk. The guest must authorize the additional night in advance. Finance will not reimburse the additional night.
Takeaway: Sponsors need to provide specific information to make a reservation, but don’t worry! We’ve made a list on the next page that also includes our room types. Remember, if you have any questions about making a reservation, altering an existing reservation, or about any stage in the sponsorship process, please don’t hesitate to contact us at any time - that’s what we’re here for!

World Breastfeeding Week with ACS
T
he Family Advocacy Program, part of Army Community Service (ACS), invites you to celebrate the annual World Breastfeeding Week during the first week of August. The celebration is held every year in more than 120 countries with an aim to inform, anchor, and engage action on breastfeeding and related issues, initiated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. If you’d like to learn more, sign up to attend our Baby Bumps class (August 11th, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.), our monthly Baby Boot Camp class for expecting parents, or visit our outreach table on August 13th, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Exchange. These are great opportunities to connect with our New Parent Support Program (NPSP) team who will be happy to answer all of your questions.
8 | STUTTGART.ARMYMWR.COM
“Our NPSP is a professional team of nurses and social workers who provide supportive services to military families with young children. We offer home visits, hospital visits, prenatal care, as well as monthly classes and playgroups,” said Kyra Smith, NPSP team social worker. Though breastfeeding can be a wonderful experience for many families, it isn’t always easy. Lactation counseling is one of the supports the NPSP team offers to new families. While breastfeeding your baby is of course not the only option to feed your child, the benefits of breastfeeding include decreased chance of obesity, decreased risk for diabetes and allergies, increased immunities that are passed through the milk and more.
There are benefits for the mom too! When breastfeeding, the hormone oxytocin (also known as the “cuddle chemical”) is released in the brain of the mom and the baby, which increases bonding and milk production. Breastfeeding also aids in the postpartum recovery process, can decrease the risk of postpartum mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and can reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
However you chose to feed your child, the NPSP team is here for you and will offer the feeding support you need and can answer any questions or concerns you may have. The NPSP services are free in the USAG Stuttgart community (for military, contractors, and GS alike). To register, contact the New Parent Support Program at DSN 596-3362 or CIV 09641-705963362. RUN TO REMEMBER Thirteen years ago, Stuttgart Family and MWR and 1-10 Special Forces Group (SFG) A, collaborated to bring the community together in remembrance of our fallen heroes. This was the vision of then Chaplin Major Jerry Waldrop, and year after year, even as MWR staff have changed and founding Service members have PCSd, the run continues as a symbol of commemoration.
Run to Remember participants are welcome to attend an opening ceremony that begins at 7:25 a.m. This is an opportunity to honor the heroes. The half marathon will start at 8 a.m., and the 5K will start at 8:10 a.m. You can register for the Run to Remember at any Stuttgart Fitness Center. Pick up your running bib on the day of the race from 5:45 – 7:25 a.m. at Panzer Fitness Center.
Traditionally, the race is held in the month of July. If you are a long time Stuttgart community member, you may have wondered, “Where is the run”? Though the customs of this race remain the same, this year, the Run to Remember will take place on the 20th year anniversary of September 11, 2001.
RUN CATEGORIES Half Marathon & 5K: Male/ Female/ Overall: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place Age groups: 11 -14, 15 – 19, 20 – 29, 30 – 39, 40 – 49, 50+
“I am very happy that the Run to Remember has endured for a decade and wish all the runners the strength and grace that comes from the Lord as they run to remember.” Chaplain Waldrop
