BAC AEKI EHT MORF SRETTEL

Hey Key Clubbers!

O! M! G! Summer is already more than halfway over :( I hope everyone's July was amazing and August will only wrap up your summer even better. So many things happened in July, from our Taiyaki and Governors Island fundraiser to the numerous service projects we've had. In case you haven't heard, we also broke our fundraising goal of $10,000!!! I just want to say a huge thank you to Vincent, I could not have asked for a better treasurer. Also a big thank you to our fundraising directors Alan and Evelyn as well as the awesome fundraising committee. Our second fundraising goal had been set for $15,000, which might sound even more crazy but I strongly believe we can reach it! I cannot stress how important it is to sign up for the next service year (you can do so at bit.ly/stuykc-1920). We have already sent out the first email on the new mailing list and in my opinion, the new look of the email is definitely a glow-up! Feel free to give feedback on this email format or anything that we do so we can change things for the better. Hope you guys like it :)

PRESIDENT JASON XIONG

Take advantage of the rest of the summer to volunteer! Don't miss out on fun summertime events and of course, prepare for even more events once the school year is in full swing. Shoutout to New Projects for making all these service projects possible. Lets sign up for events and get closer to our service hours goal too! Here's something very random: to see if you really read the Locksmith, comment an angry emoji on the Facebook post where Rachel announce this issue. Hope you will have your best August yet and I hope to catch you at an event or a fundraiser soon! Yours in caring service, Jason Xiong President of Stuyvesant Key Club IKEYA Board 2019-2020

Hey Key Clubbers!

VICE PRESIDENT DAVID SHI

There’s only one month of summer left! Oh, how fast the time flies. We hope you guys have been enjoying our events and that you meet new people! While it may seem tempting to simply stay in your air conditioned room to avoid the hot summer, be sure not to miss out on the fun! The Division 11 fundraiser at Luna Park this August is sure to be a blast, and I can’t wait to have fun with all of the different Key Clubs! Plus, you get a huge discount on the day pass, which lets you ride all the attractions for free, over and over! What a steal!I I hope to see you all there!!

Yours in service, David Shi VP of Stuyvesant Key Club IKEYA Board 2019-2020

Hey everyone! Summer is already half way over, even though it felt so short. This month has been very hot, so stay cool! Howeverrr, that doesn’t mean you should stay home with the AC. We had many events this month, and we have many in the future as well. Thanks for everyone who came and I hope you guys continue to come and have fun. We might be having a meeting soon in the Summer so stay tuned for that!I recently sent out the first email to the new emailing list with a completely new format! If you haven’t received it, that means that you didn’t sign up for the new mailing list to be a key clubber of the next service year, so make sure you do that. We have many other events coming up such as Ice Cream Social, Jazz Age Lawn Party, and New Village Music Festival!

SECRETARY PAMELA YANG

our Adventures at Governors Island Fundraiser with Btech. Both were a massive success and we managed to raise over $1,000 this month, bringing our total money raised to $10,671.95! Our new fundraising goal for the rest of the service year is $15,000 and though this might seem impossible to reach, I know we’re gonna crush it. TREASURER VINCENT HUANG

Hi everyone! Summer is passing by so fast I can’t believe it’s August already :( I hope you guys have been doing well and enjoying whatever you have been doing, be it prep or work! Our fundraising grind has been continuing and I’m proud to say that we have officially hit our 10k fundraising goal with the conclusion of our July fundraisers! I hope you all liked the ice cream and fish-cone from the Taiyaki NYC Fundraiser and had a blast at

Please continue to attend future events and fundraisers! All proceeds will be going to the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. Looking forward to seeing you there! Yours in service, Vincent Huang Treasurer of Stuyvesant Key Club IKEYA Board 2019-2020

Hey Key Clubbers, Wow! We are already in the middle of August. A lot of things have happened this summer. hope you all have been enjoying your vacation and don’t be too sad that school is less than a month away. There’s a new tab on the website, meant to promote transparency between our volunteers and club officers. You can find answers to the most commonly asked questions about Key Club and talk about issues regarding the club on the tab too. My next initiative is to add the counters or meters for our fundraising and service hour goals to the website. Yours in service, Jackson Ngo Webmaster of Stuyvesant Key Club IKEYA Board 2019-2020

Adventures at Governor's Island Total Earnings: $879

16

By Rachel Joh

On Saturday July 27th, Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant held a joint fundraiser at Governor's Island. Attendees were given the three options: BBQ only at the Park for $8, attractions at the Adventures site for $14, or both for $20. At the BBQ, we took turns serving the various types of snacks and beverages and cooking the meat. There was some time after brownies, burgers, and ice tea lemonades so many of us spent it chatting away or playing games with our friends. When we moved on to the Adventures site, it started to drizzle but that did not stop any of us from running through the outdoor maze, trying to complete the task in record time.

Then, we moved ontopersonally my favorite activity of the day-rock climbing. The course was separated into three different walls with different levels of difficulty. Even though many of us were not able to reach the top, it was definitely an enjoyable experience. With this successful fundraiser that reeled in $879, we were able to exceed this year’s fundraising goal of $10,000! Our new goal has increased to $15,000 and there is no doubt that we will soon accomplish that as well. All proceeds went towards the International Project Children's Miracle Network Hospital, a non-profit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals, medical research, and community awareness of children's health issues.

TRC 2019 Basketball Tounrament "There were many roles: scorekeeper, timekeeper, and court manager. As court manager, I needed to distribute materials such as timers, whistles, and score sheets to the other volunteers at the court so that we could start the matches as soon as possible and have everything running smoothly. In between games, different teams from all four courts were sent to the tents at the front to participate in health education exercises like activities with drunk goggles." ~ CAROL CHEN

FABSCRAP

BY: JASON XIONG On Saturday the 6th was the first of Fabscrap service projects we've had in July. This is the second time I have attended Fabscrap and after having a great experience the first time last year, I looked forward to attending again this year. One of my favorite things about Fabscrap is the fact that it is only a couple of blocks away from my house (just kidding!). Fabscrap helps reduce the waste that goes in landfills by recycling fabrics that do not contain any spandex in them. Once we arrived at the location, we were given an orientation of what to do with types of material, which was definitely a necessary refresher for me. After the orientation, the rest of time was basically spent sorting out all sorts of fabrics, from large rolls to tiny pieces in a book. Although definitely just as exhausting, if not more, than the last time I was here. However, I still enjoyed the service project greatly and like I said last year, let's reduce unnecessary waste in landfill, one piece of fabric at a time.

Rubin Museum Block Party By Keyi Guo The event had a variety of booths such as many particpatory experiences like Flower Power, Power Couple, Power Nap, Power Trip, and Power Down. The Rubin Museum intended to center the whole party around power as one could tell by exhibit names. The coordinators were very kind to us and allowed us to take as many breaks as we needed to as we manned booths. They stocked us up with water bottles and snack to get through the hot day. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the event and found it very rewarding as well. I would definitely volunteer again next year at this event and encourage others too!

In my first Key Club event, the project captain canceled last second so the job was offered to me. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone, so I agreed even though I definitely didn’t feel ready. Normally, I hate leadership roles and having people look to me for guidance. I remember the day before the event, I bombarded Rachel on Messenger, asking her what exactly the project captain does and whether or not I’d have to get to the event early, if I need to talk to anyone, if I need to track down every volunteer. The following day, I found Alan on the train ride to the event and proceeded to torture him with the same questions. I was so scared and filled with nerves. What if the other volunteers asked me questions and I couldn’t answer? What if I do or say something wrong and the event organizer yells at me?

How do I even know who the event organizer is and do I need to tell them I’m the project captain? I was so consumed by insignificant details that when I got to the event, I was mildly disappointed. I had imagined so many worst case scenarios that everything went swell, even if to others it could’ve been better. I thought I’d meet scary Key Club volunteers, but they were just kids like me. The event organizers I thought would be rude and mean were just nice people trying to organize a walkathon. Being project captain wasn’t so bad, and I even got an extra 30 points. Although we were short on volunteers, the event was really fun and I kept getting thank yous from random pedestrians. Now, I actually look forward to being the project captain and I only bother Rachel on Messenger once in a while.
