Editor's Note Hey Key Clubbers! I say this every time but I can't believe that summer went by so fast! Initially, I had thought that this summer would have been much less interesting in comparison to my previous years, given the pandemic and us being at home. However, Stuyvesant Key Club has allowed me to continue to stay connected to everyone! We held both meetings and divisionals in July and August. We introduced Virtual Event Work Days too at the end of August and I found it fun to see everyone, even though not in-person. Despite interacting with everyone virtually only, I found the Key Club spirit to be alive in many of us. It is amazing how many submissions the Locksmith has received whether it be articles or posters this month. I hope that we continue this even as school begins to start in the following weeks!

If you were not chosen but you want to write one to fill in the spot on the BINGO, you can either email locksmith@stuykc.org or simply PM me about your desire to write an article for the next issue and we can take note of it!

To briefly explain articles and clear up some confusion, you can choose to write an article by clicking YES! on event forms. Our amazing director, Michelle will choose a couple authors based on which events the Locksmith will feature for that issue.

Yours in service, Keyi Guo Editor of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

Once again, I sincerely hope that everyone stays safe and happy during this time.Â

CRABINET DIVISION UPDATES DISTRICT UPDATES CALENDAR SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS MEMBER OF THE MONTH

PRESIDENT Hey Key Clubbers! Oh my, the summer flew by so quickly! I’ve been having too much fun playing Among Us. I was not prepared mentally to go back to school, but thankfully it was delayed for a week. Speaking of summer, over this break , you guys (the members!) have volunteered virtually *SO MUCH* that our club has the most service hours in the New York District! I really want to thank all of you so much for putting in so much effort even while we are at home. Stay strong and keep up the good work! I’m also relieved that our virtual meetings were well-received and that so many of you showed up each time to hang out and stay updated with the club. Keep your eyes peeled for more future meetings and possible game nights on our Discord server! I look forward to continue meeting and learning more about everyone! Yours in service, David Shi President of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

VICE PRESIDENT HayHoh Stuy Key Clubbers! It's that time of the year again, Back To School! (yayy). This summer has been very uneventful for me to say the least, however, with the start of school (whether it be remote or blended for you guys) I'm sure most of you would wish summer break continued. But, we can all look forward to when quarantine finally lifts, and get to go outside and enjoy food, sceneries, and the outdoor air. I'm sure many of you are uncertain what's going to actually happen with learning this year, but the one thing that you can always look to is this club. We will still have meetings (monthly), events (virtual, and inperson when restrictions lift), and fundraisers. So if you are bored or feel unsure about what you are doing, pull up to our events or meetings to see some new faces!

SECRETARY Hello Key Clubbers! Summer is almost over so I hope you’re all ready for school to start again! I'm really so so so proud of all the progress we made! ( ◕ ◕) *.✧ We are now past 50% of our service hour goal, so keep up the good work and make sure to check out the events doc often. We also have our first End-ofSummer bingo to have even more fun while doing virtual events! Although virtual events are very different from in person events, they are still a great way to give back to our community. Lastly I want to say that Covid19 is still wreaking havoc in our community so be sure to wash your hands often and always wear a mask when going outside. Please stay safe!

ヮ ノ

Continue to stay active with virtual events and I look forward to the day when I can see you all in person!!! Let me know if there is anything you want me to know! Yours in service, Zi Liu Secretary of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

TREASURER What's g00d KClubbers! Summer's coming to a close—school's just around the corner—but if we learned anything from the quarantine, it's that we can nevertheless live life to its fullest. I think it's easy to be in your bag and be frustrated by the state of the US and the world. What's not easy is being positive when everything else around you is negative. If you haven't been allowed outside during the quarantine and have just been bumming at home for 5+ months, I implore you to think about the situation differently. Everyone reading this is a young adult, with absolutely no idea what's in store for them in the future. Instead, worry about being the best version of yourself in the present, set small achievable goals for yourself (ahem— virtually volunteer), and celebrate the small wins. And hey, once we're back in school and society is at a better place, you'll emerge from the quarantine as a butterfly. Yours in service, Alan Guo Treasurer of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

WEBMASTER Heyoooo !! As I am typing this, there are less than 16 days left until school officially starts. Hopefully, everyone was at least a little productive these past few months (and doing lots of virtual events of course). Personally, summer was a great way for me to catch up with some work (I finally revamped the website hehe -- go check it out at stuykc.org cough cough) but also lots and lots of Netflix and anime. This summer was definitely a lot different from what we are used to, but I think we made it work, and in many ways, made things even better. I’m really glad I got to know a lot of you throughout the virtual meetings we held <3. And even though I am a bit sad that the real grind and responsibilities are officially restarting, I am still excited to see what the new school year brings, whether this refers to the new projects Key Club will be working on or the new people I will meet. I can’t wait for things to return to normal and I can see everyone face to face but I also can’t wait to use this unique situation as an opportunity to continue testing new waters. Statement From New York District Key Club Regarding Recent Events

New York District Key Club would like to express our sadness and outrage over the events that led to the killing of George Floyd a week ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Floyd family and the families of the many individuals who came before him. As we continue to combat the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, we are reminded of the historical inequities and racial injustice that has been part of our society for far too long. It is moments like these that remind us that there is work to be done and that we must do better. We commit that New York District Key Club will work towards this end and will continue to live our core values of leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness. Our District is a strong network of 250 clubs and 12,000 members across New York. The District Board will discuss immediate actions to unite and engage our membership in opposing racial inequality and advancing social justice. We look forward to sharing more information soon on various projects and initiatives in which our members can participate and support. This moment demands action. Key Club has always been at the forefront of helping to lead and change our communities for nearly 100 years and we will continue to be a force for positive change.

BeanBeanBean

Quirky. Fun. Educational.

Beanbeanbean is one of the first virtual events I've done with Key Club, and though I do miss the fun and interactivity of in-person events and had low expectations, I was fairly surprised at how much time had passed when I answered questions on their website. The subjects of these questions were simple enough: English vocabulary, math multiplication, Spanish, chemistry symbols, etc. Though some were easier to answer and collect beans than others, I enjoyed the multiplication especially, as they were simple to solve offhandedly and the ASL, for I found learning the sign language through guess-andcheck interesting. The way the "beans" would drop onto he backdrop of the screen each time I answered a question correct was aesthetically pleasing, and the funny animations in the background when I donate my beans kept me going. Though I wished the website gave me the option to donate the beans whenever and not every 21 beans, I enjoyed it and am glad to have found a website that allows laypeople to help the world. 32

Basically, the concept of this event was that volunteers would answer simple questions to earn beans which would then be donated to various charities such as Feeding America, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I think the questions are designed to be answered by little kids which is why I am kind of embarrassed to say that I probably had way too invested into this. The questions sped by so quickly and completing the multiplication tables to continue my “streak” brought me back my elementary school days. Overall, it was super cool to be able to help out while also kicking back and watching Netflix.

Sabrina Chen I was first drawn to Beanbeanbean because of its unique name. The website makes us answer questions and each correct answer gives a bean (the concept is similar to the Freerice Event). The beans would be donated in multiples of 21. Me, not realizing that, kept wondering why my beans weren’t stacking up. After getting used to it, I realized this event was very relaxing and simple. I’ve mainly stuck to questions about multiplication, identifying images, and English vocabulary, but lately I’ve been testing my Spanish knowledge (which is very limited). The beans donated will be translated into a monetary amount and donated to charities, so I would definitely recommend Beanbeanbean to anyone who has some spare time :D. 33

ISABELLA C When I signed up for Key Club at the Club Fair, I was honestly doing it for the free cookie. Never would I have thought that Key Club would make such a big impact on me. Key Club’s virtual events gave me the opportunity to not only learn how amazing the club was, but how amazing the people were too. Sooo let’s take a jump back to my first virtual event, shall we? Okay, picture this; you’re hiding under your blankets as the ac blasts through the house texting your friends that you haven’t seen since March. You open the event document on your computer in hopes of being productive.

As you scroll through the document, an event catches your eye. For me, that was this weird sounding event called Wikispeedia. After spending an hour trying to find speed limit signs in the wheatfields of Kansas and horribly failing, I told myself, tomorrow I’m going to do better. The next day, I was able to find 26 signs in 1 hour. The day after that, I spent 3 hours and somehow found 174 signs (that’s 58 signs an hour :0). I kept going, slowly getting faster at finding them. Somewhere along the way, I stopped doing it for the hours and I started doing it because some part of me thought it

was fun. Plus, I got to see so many cool places along the way. My house hunters obsession even started to point out the different types of house and take notes of future ideas. After that, I decided to give some other events a try. Like Wikispeedia, I decided to tailor every event so that it became fun for me, whether that was picking documents to transcribe that interested me, or playing with stationery when making cards for project thanks. These events introduced me to different types of activities I wouldn’t even think about trying and

taught me things I wouldn’t even attempt to learn. Knowing that doing these events were also benefiting others was only the cherry on top. Thank you Key Club for being the reason I’m not going crazy in quarantine. P.S Pull up to our fundraisers <3
