EDITOR'S FAREWELL

Hey Key Clubbers!

After months of collecting dozens of cabinet paragraphs, it feels surreal that I’m writing my own. It’s time to formally announce that I have left The Locksmith in good hands and will now be serving as District Bulletin Editor for the 2020-2021 service year! The day I parted with The Locksmith was eventually going to come but I still feel a bit heartbroken that I am no longer part of the newsletter that I have worked on for three years.

However, I know that Keyi and Michelle are more than capable of serving as Stuyvesant Key Club’s Editor and director. I am excited to see what new content will be produced!

I say this every year but this past service year was undoubtedly the best.

Throughout the year, we continuously set out and reached so many achievements such as our fundraising goal. Our efforts were recognized and we were able to bring in so many awards as a whole.As Editor, I cannot thank you guys enough for all the pictures and articles sent in these past few years - it is through your commitment that we are able to improve and produce content. I hope everyone continues to help out The Locksmith. Even in this pandemic, there are ways to continue volunteering and

EDITOR'S NOTE

Hey Key Clubbers!

You may not know me, but I’m your new editor for this 2020 to 2021 service year!

I was your Locksmith director for the 2019 to 2020 service year. I congratulate Rachel for being promoted to District Bulletin Editor! I will be working alongside with Michelle, our new Locksmith director, woot woot! I still can’t believe I’m writing my very first Editor’s Note and I look forward to working with everybody.

I want to give a big thanks to everyone that submitted content to the Locksmith this month. Whether you filled out the quarantine form, submitted your NYC Health Hospital posters, or March of Dimes cards, all of them provide precious content to the Locksmith.

Without your contribution, it would be difficult to keep you updated with these issues of the Locksmith! Despite the current circumstances, we’ve kept the Key Club spirit alive.

To introduce myself, I’m a middle child. I have an older sister and a younger brother. My favorite color is purple and I hate the taste of shrimp. I love watching shows and movies on Netflix, ranging from true crime to rom-coms.

PAST PRESIDENT Hey Key Clubbers!

For the last time in The Locksmith, it’s Jason and this is my farewell. I just want to start off by saying thank you all for an incredible service year. In case you didn’t know, we served over 8,500 hours as a club and raised over $22.000, surpassing our fundraising goals three times. We were also able to win fifteen club awards, six individual awards, and eighteen DKC awards so if you ask me, this past service year has definitely been an awesome one.To my directors and committee members, thank you for all of your efforts this year and I'm so proud of all the things our committees were able to accomplish.To my fellow cabinet members, you are all some of the most passionate and hardworking people I know and I couldn't say thank you enough for being by my side this year leading this club together.To EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF STUYVESANT KEY CLUB, thank you for sticking with us this service

Clubbers!

NEW PRESIDENT

I'm extremely excited to be serving as the 2020-2021 dictator for Stuy Key Club. Yes, you can't get rid of me that easily. While the year has started off in a way never seen before, I want to adapt and change in order to make the best of it. Let's keep up our Key Club pride together, even during this strange situation! I hope to further improve and adjust to our virtual meetings so that we can all get the most out of them. I look forward to being more creative with the activities we do at virtual meetings and thinking of new opportunities to bond despite social distancing.

I'm enjoying contacting many different people to get more virtual events for all of us! Our first half of the service year may very well be entirely served through the internet, within the confines of our own home, that simply means that we'll have more virtual events in the future! And while I do sound optimistic, I do understand that not everyone has the time to keep doing Key Club, and that's understandable. Hopefully,

PAST VICE-PREZ Hey Key

Clubbers!

This past year really has been something to reflect on. And I don't mean in terms of awards or numbers or whatever. The memories I have created with Key Clubbers not only within my own club but all over New York City are things that I can cherish. That's why the note that we ended the service year on left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Despite this, I think we should ask ourselves this: did we have fun? Did we learn something about ourselves? Did we grow as a person? Did we make a difference? If you think did, then I hope you found it to be worthwhile, and that you continue the journey with us this year. I want us to ask ourselves this because I feel like these are some of the biggest reasons why Key Club exists and why people stay in Key Club. If there's a silver lining to this quarantine, it's that I now have time to self-reflect on the past service year, my friendships, the changes I made within myself and the differences I'm making in the world. To Jason, congratulations on your promotion! I'll do my best

NEW VICE-PREZ Highlow Key Clubbers!

Welcome to the new service year, and to a new cabinet!

I'm Jeffrey Huang, your new Vice President, and I'm truly thankful for being a part of this community.

Although we have started rough, it only means we can go higher the rest of the year. So, be on the lookout for future events and fundraisers!

I was told to introduce myself, sooo...I like food, especially Japanese, Indian, and Korean Cuisine (spicy stuff as well)I enjoy sleeping in moderation (8 hours a day) I like to learn new things: instruments, dancing (though I'm stiff as a board), and unique factsI recently picked up League, Minecraft (100% legal), and Movies And yeah, that about sums me upSooo, I wish that you all are doing well, and can catch up on sleep that we have all been dying to have. And I hope to see you all, when this lockdown is finally over :)

PAST SECRETARY Hey everyone!

It’s been a wonderful year working with all of you. I wished that the year would never end, but sadly it has to. I know that I wasn’t the best secretary ever, but I hope that all of you enjoyed our times together even if I made mistakes sometimes. With the new service year, I’m proud to say that Zi is our new secretary, and I know that she will do great. This year has honestly been the best year ever, and I’ve not only met some of my best friends ever, I’ve also gained a lifetime of memories. I’ve had so much fun working with the best cab ever, and I’m really sad that some of them are graduating. The time has passed so fast for me, and it really just felt like a second.

From attending events, to helping out at fundraisers, I’ve had an unimaginable time. Hopefully we will be able to have a physical induction to properly say our farewells; and if we do, I hope all of you are able to attend. I’m really

NEW SECRETARY I hope everyone's managing during this time! I'm so happy to be your Secretary for the 20202021 service year! Through Key Club, I made friends that listen to me ramble about K-pop stars and my next physics test, that support me when I'm a mess, and I know that now I can be that person for all of you and support you through your Key Club journey!

The Old Cab has done a great job making Key Club super successful, and I will try my best to uphold their legacy, if not surpass it. Their efforts allowed Key Club to prosper, but our members are also super important for all of our accomplishments!! You were the ones that welcomed me into this family, and allowed me to grow as a person. Our hours goal this year is 5,000 hours, which accommodates the situation we are in currently. However, I believe that we will be able to set new goals as the service year goes on while we break old ones! With the new service year, we will be trying out new changes to events and

PAST TREASURER Hey Key Clubbers!

The 2019-2020 service year has officially ended and with that, a new service year must begin! It feels so unreal to finally be saying goodbye after four years of being in Key Club but I want to thank each and every one of you for making my experience as lifechanging as it was. When I joined in my freshman year, Key Club was so much smaller than it is now. We had few members at events and fundraising wasn't as prominent as it is today. Looking at just how much we've grown over the past four years alone, it's incredible. In the past service year, we served over 8,500 hours and raised over $20,000 for charities around the world. We gloss over these achievements a lot but Key Club is really doing something that we should all be proud of. Even though the new service year is off to a rough start with the quarantine, I know that won't stop the new cab and I look forward to

NEW TREASURER Hey Key Clubbers!

My name is Alan Guo and I’m happily serving as Stuy KC’s Treasurer this year!

I’ve been a Key Clubber since I was a freshman and I’ve been a fundraiser director for the past two years. Really excited to push for our 12K fundraising goal and have a really fun year meeting and celebrating with others. Some things about me are that I love goofing around and I’m a clown outside of school. I enjoy dancing, building sets , and working out . In my friend groups I can be the life of the party or the responsible dad. It sucks that the situation with Covid-19 is terrible at the moment, but I’m hoping to see my friends again and attend more events and fundraisers soon!

PAST WEBMASTER Hey Key Clubbers!

I can’t believe that it’s time for me to say goodbye to you all. Key Club has really become a second home to me and I’ve made many unforgettable memories here. From raking leaves at Leaf no Trace to lying about my age to volunteer at Bear Mountain, these events are still so vividly imprinted in my mind.

(Like that time when we ate Popeyes after the tutoring event where that little kid bullied me or the time where we had to help blind people get out of Access-ARides. I could literally go on and on but I’m just gonna stop). I’m super honored to have been able to serve as your new projects director and webmaster, however incompetent I was. I know Constance will be an amazing webmaster and has a way better work ethic than me. She, along with the rest of the cab will take this club far. I’m sad that I’ll be leaving soon ( and I couldn’t even go to my last LTC) but Key Club has given me mugs, caps, so many Tshirts, friends, a family and enough

JACKSON NGO memories to last a lifetime. Though I’m going quite far, Key Club will always follow me wherever I am, and I may be sad now but I’ll definitely smile when I look back on these times. (Eww, I feel like this last paragraph was just Winnie the Pooh quotes). This is late again in typical Jackson fashion and I have just one more thing to say.

Hey everyone :)

NEW WEBMASTER

I’m Constance and I am so excited to be serving as your webmaster this service year. I want to start off by thanking the old Cabinet for all the hard work they’ve put into the club last year. When them taking lead, we were able to break new records and I hope that this year, we can meet the standard they’ve set.

With that in mind, one goal I have as the club’s new webmaster is to expand our online presence. In times like this, it is important to stay connected and updated.

Starting with revamping the website, I hope that by redesigning it and updating it frequently, it can be a better resource for both new and returning members. The new website will display updated information about events and fundraisers as showcase work hard of Key Clubbers. I plan on working closely with our Visual Media Directors, I hope that we can make frequent updates on social media and create bi-monthly recap videos will help bring the club together and celebrate our members and their effect on the community.

CONSTANCE CHEN This is super cheesy but Key Club is something that is really important to me and has allowed me to meet my closest friends and find my of my passions. I want to help this club as much as it has helped me and promise to work super hard this year to meet your expectations. Hi Key Club!

My name is Ashley Tian and I’m currently a sophomore here at Stuy.

I’m really excited to be one of ur fundraising directors this service year alongside fanny. Our fundraising goal is 12k which I understand is a far cry from the 22k we achieved last year. Despite the ongoing pandemic as a limiting factor, i believe we can break this goal along with many future ones In the following months. As directors, we've already planned a tentative schedule for the fundraisers to take place this service year which i highly encourage everyone to attend. In addition, the board has begun the application process for new committees I can't wait to work with our fundraising members, especially with all the changes Fanny and i have planned. FANNY YIN Hi! My name is Fanny Yin, and I’m your new fundraising co-director! I’m currently a sophomore and I’ve been an active member of Key Club and the fundraising committee since mid freshman year. Over the past year, Key Club has played such a significant role in helping me find what I’m passionate about, and providing me with so many opportunities. Along the way, I’ve been able to meet some great people and have a good time, while all giving back to my community, and I want to do the same for you! I’m Amanda, one of your New Projects Directors for this service year! To introduce myself, three facts you have to know about me is I LOVE PICNIC GARDEN, Chipotle chicken burritos and sushi. (Eel avocado) My hobbies include playing all types of sports, watching kdramas and baking. The New Projects committee is in charge of finding the events for our volunteers to attend and I plan on finding entertaining and meaningful events for you guys. I’m super excited to be working with y’all and hope to see you guys at events!

My name is Zijia (Jess) Zhang and I am ecstatic to be one of your New Projects directors! I will work hard and work closely with the committee members, my co-director Amanda, and the Board to bring engaging events to all of you. I am certain that despite these trying times, we will all be able to help out and contribute something to our communities by volunteering virtually through Key Club.

Moving forward, I will do my best to ensure that we meet our service hour goal of 5,000 hours, that members are

VISUAL MEDIA

I’m Ezra, one of your new Visual Media Committee Directors. I don’t do much outside of school, but I enjoy watching TV shows during my freetime. I also enjoy watching Kdrama with my family and friends! With the help of my co-director Irene Hao, I plan to do a lot of activities with my committee. The committee is planning to update the bulletin board on the second floor, create a scrapbook, design posters to promote events and fundraisers, create recap videos, and promote events on social media. This year we’re very ambitious in the amount of work that we are planning to have, but I believe that the committee will be able to accomplish a lot this year! I look forward to working with Key Club this year!

I'm Irene Hao, one of the co-directors of Visual Media (the former Social Media committee, but revamped!) and current junior at Stuyvesant. Though I've been a part of Key Club since freshman year, albeit at a different high school, it was only recently that I've dedicated a significant portion of my time, and I don't regret it! In Visual Media, we are in charge of creating those cool posters promoting fundraisers and events, those recap videos on YouTube, and posts on Instagram (go follow!). I'm super pumped to meet and work with everyone and even more excited to bond over meetings/calls. Regardless of whether you have prior experience or not (we will teach and guide you), let's make this committee a great community!

Governor's Project: Our Governor, Mariam Makar, has chosen Canines for Disabled Kids as her Governor's project this year. It's a non-profit organization that has a mission of "increasing independence for children with disabilities and their families by promoting service dog partnerships, understanding, and awareness throughout the community."

Quarantine Stories How is your quarantine going?

How has/is the coronavirus affecting you?

My mother got worried about the worsening cases of coronavirus in New York and literally came up to me one morning and announced, "We're moving to Los Angeles" while I was brushing my teeth. Next thing I know, I'm packing up my clothes, school stuff, sketchbook, diary, ice bear plush, etc. We rode a taxi to the airport, which was pretty empty. We arrived in Los Angeles, where we moved in with my maternal grandparents. Now I need to wake up three hours before New York students do to keep up with my work, which is given based on Eastern Standard Time. We'll move back to New York when school reopens.

-Sophia Li OMG i'm actually sleeping like whuhhhhhh. And I'm maybe getting a little too much sleep. The recommended is an average 9 hours I'm getting like 10.5 maybe this isn't healthy. Ok but school has been a mess and my life is a mess too, but key club makes everything better you know. Now I have to worry about filling out more forms and making my own PRFs so if I procrastinate I'll get yelled at hmmmm. Going back to quarantine, I've been trying to photosynthesize under the sun hoping I would grow taller but it's not working. Quarantine also made me miss school like never before.

At least back then my life had a schedule and was more organized.

Now with my personality, there is not order nor schedule. But I hope everyone's safe and doing well!!!

-Zi Liu For one, I haven't been outside for a very long time. I live in an apartment and there's no backyard where I can out and breathe the fresh air. My parents forbid me from stepping out the door too. I've probably also gained some weight being at home all the time in my PJs, eating lots of instant ramen. Simply being home for so long is a little odd to me and I find that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still adjusting my sleep schedule. Like many people, I'm disappointed in the fact that many events are canceled, but I am excited to stay engaged virtually through the various events that New Projects provides us.

Quarantine Stories How is your quarantine going?

1. Watched a couple movies (Onward, Bloodshot, The Invisible Man) 2. Made a couple of decent sketches that I'm actually proud of in my notebook 3. Read a book 4. Actually did exercise (my mom made me do fifty sit-ups and fifty poorly done pushups every morning)

I re-watched so many dramas and I'm so happy that I actually have to time to do that now. I also started a new drama but with online courses did not finish it yet. I've been chilling and gaining weight too.

I've been trying to bake, but it really hasn't been that successful. I think the quarantine has brought out the inner chef/baker in me. Rather, it may be that I've been watching too much MasterChef and the Great British Baking Show. A friend of mine keeps on trying to convince me to take up meditation, but it doesn't seem to be gaining much traction. It's likely because I get distracted quite easily. Maybe by the end of the quarantine, I'll turn into a mindfulness master.

Hello all Key Clubbers!

Welcome to my farewell paragraph for the year, as well as my farewell to the four years that I spent in Key Club. Joining Key Club in freshman year, I didn’t think I’d take much out of this experience, after all, what can I do by simply volunteering? As always, I’m wrong. Volunteering isn’t simple, and neither is Key Club. When you think that you know what Key Club is about, someone (like Jason Xiong) is there to tell you, “you are wrong.” One step after another, I plunged deeper into the scheme of Key Club, doing one thing after another. First I joined the fundraising committee, next it I joined the Division 11 Events Committee, and ultimately, I ended up directing the fundraising committee (it was a scam). Never would I have ever thought that I can accomplish so many things through Key Club, raising a total of $22,000 for the district, second highest in the district (quoting Anthony Lim), and becoming a part of so many families, evident through my presence in TOO MANY KEY CLUB GROUP CHATS. To me now, Key Club is more than volunteering. It’s where a group of like-minded people come together and try to make this world a better place (except for Vincent Huang because he just wants to scam everyone’s money). I probably can’t recite every Key Club moment and people, but they will always have a place in my heart. These four years have been wild and fun and there’s nothing else I would rather do. Although there has been some twists and turns (*cough Ayan Rahman, David Shi, Matthew He cough*), the result is still straight up the best! I would like to say this isn’t the end to my Key Club journey yet but I have to say good bye. FAREWELL KEY CLUB (except for Vincent Huang because $$$$).
