Editor's Note Happy New Year Key Clubbers! I can't believe 2021 is finally here, 2020 felt like it was never going to end. It felt surreal the moment at midnight when the new year arrived. I hope everyone had a restful break with family and friends. I'm so proud of everyone that worked so hard this past year, whether it was submissions or virtual events. I'm sure that we will bring that same hardworking mindset into 2021, with this year definitely being better than the last. It's been a tough ride. This is our first issue with the new committee members and I'm excited for everyone to see their beautiful work. I would like to give a big shoutout to Mandy, Keara, and Adeeb for their amazing efforts over winter break on this issue. Of course, this couldn't have happened without Director Michelle's support either as I finished up my college applications. As always, I'm thankful for everyone that kept the Locksmith alive during the tough year that 2020 was.

KEYI GUO This will be the second to last issue that I will work on before the new Editor gets elected! I'm so excited to see Cabinet Elections happen as I'm sure that whoever takes over will do an excellent job. Good luck on finishing up the fall semester everyone, but always remember to give yourself space to take a break. You got this, we're all here for you! CRABINET DIVISION UPDATES DISTRICT UPDATES CALENDAR SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS MEMBER OF THE MONTH

PRESIDENT Hey Key Clubbers! As 2020 comes to an end, along with the service year closely following suit, I hope that we can all stay strong for the rest of the school year. As I finish up my college apps a few minutes late and rush to send in this cab para for this edition of the Locksmith, I want to acknowledge how hard it is to stay motivated, both in school and in terms of doing Key Club events. If you ever feel like you need to talk to someone, get some advice, or have any questions, please, PLEASE, do not feel uncomfortable texting any of the cabinet members. As we approach the new service year, there also needs to be a new cycle of cabinet members, If you're interested in leading the club for next year, please start considering what you would like to do as a club leader! We'll be sending out forms for cabinet interest in the near future, so make sure to start doing events if you haven't and to get to know your fellow Key Clubbers! Yours in service, David Shi President of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

VICE PRESIDENT Happy 2021 Key Clubbers! I hope you all had a great winter break (^-^) With 2020 behind us, we can finally look forward to a better year (hopefully)! First off, cabinet elections are upcoming, look forward to updates in upcoming meetings. If you are in any way interested, feel free to pm any of the current cab members. Committee director applications will also be rolling out soon. To the seniors out there, although you will stress about college, you should also realize just how amazing all of you are for just being in Stuy. And college is just another place for you to grow, so if you are passionate about your career, you will always get somewhere. And to the freshmen that missed your first year at Stuy, don't expect too much when you can actually go back to school. It's not the school that makes the place special, it's the groups of friends and communities that you make. Yours in service, Jeffrey Huang Vice President of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

SECRETARY Happy New Year Key Clubbers! We survived!!! With 2020 behind our backs, I’m excited to see what positive changes 2021 has in store for us! Despite being virtual, everyone worked hard with online events and fundraisers, still finding ways to give back to our community, and I’m so proud of all your efforts!! Make sure that Key Club is part of your New Year’s resolution, and keep up the good work. The start of a new year also means that the cabinet is retiring soon, so for those of you who want to take your Key Club journey even further, consider running for a position! But know that even as a regular member, your contributions are very important and valuable :) Lastly, stay warm and safe. Remember that Key Club is always here for you if you have any questions or problems! See you soon! Yours in service, Zi Liu Secretary of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

TREASURER Happy New Year, Key Club! Some of my favorite things to do to ring in a new year are watching the NYC ball drop, cheering glasses of cider, and take one last look back into the past. Despite all the bad, Key Club is still lively with virtual projects and fundraisers, excited committees, and underclassmen stirring about future elections! The bar has been set low, so I know that we will achieve much further than our wildest expectations. I'm nearing my last cabinet update (I can hardly believe it), and the rest of senior year ain't looking too hot. Nevertheless, the next precious months will be busy with planning, fundraising, training, and paperwork. Let's make this final push something memorable hmm? New Year's resolution for 300 service hours!#2021 #happynewyear #goals

WEBMASTER Happy new year, everyone :) I hope everyone was able to unwind during the break and have some fun. Besides filling out college applications, I used this week to bake a lottttt of goodies, do some digital art, and set up my 2021 bullet journal. I also spent a lot of time reflecting on how 2020 started and how it ended up going as well as my goals for 2021. 2020 has undoubtedly been very different from others but I am still proud of where we are. Together, we were able to push through the challenges that were imposed on us and adapt. Not only have we successfully moved meetings, events, and fundraisers virtual, but we were able to continue to stay connected through everything. And although my time as Webmaster is coming to a close, I’m excited to see what the new year (and the new generation of Key Clubbers) will bring. <3 Yours in service, Constance Chen Webmaster of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

Club Updates The Virtual Event Work Day on Sunday, December 6th, was a huge success! Over sixty Key Clubbers came together to participate in Project Giving Thanks and Macy’s Write A Letter to Santa. Participants were sent into several breakout rooms where they listened to Christmas music, shared about their Key Club experiences, and made new friends, all while writing letters to frontline workers and Make-A-Wish children. It was amazing to see everyone interacting and the boost of event engagement at the Work Day! This was the first time a Virtual Event Work Day was led by the New Projects Committee and I am very proud of all the committee members for stepping up and making sure everyone had a great time! I definitely will attend future Virtual Event Work Days and encourage you all to as well!

Transcription for the Smithsonian Institution Caleb Song The Smithsonian Institution event can be summed up in a few words as just a transcription job. You read handwritten, historical pieces of writing or logs and type them into a section provided by the website. At first, this was all I thought it was, reading, writing, squinting at letters trying to make out what they are, and being frustrated by blotches of ink and the haphazard style of writing. However, as I spent more time with all these historical texts and letters I began to appreciate more about history and how history is so similar to concurrent procedures. I learned about relationships between officials and schools for the Freedmen's Bureau and data for women’s astrological logbooks and much more. In all honesty, even writing a few words might coincidentally get you to learn and appreciate history.

Zooniverse Shreya Roy Zooniverse is one of the most versatile and extensive events so far. With projects in so many categories such as the arts, history, sciences, and literature, there’s truly something for everyone. Not only do you learn more about the research itself, but you actively contribute to it! Personally, I’m obsessed with the space research projects like Spiral Graph and Aurora Zoo, which allow volunteers to record the characteristics of different auroras and galaxies. All your classifications are recorded in your account, which is completely free to create. The simple user interface allows for a short learning curve, meaning it’s super quick to start contributing to real research. Plus, you can do as many contributions as you’d like, so there’s complete freedom to check out different projects or really devote yourself to a select few.

Exceptional for While I was browsing the numerous events, I came across Exceptional Care for Children. After reading through its description the words, pen pal letters caught my eye. I love writing letters and I couldn’t wait to write letters, especially to younger children. Also, I recently learned how to use Canva and couldn’t wait to try the application out. From detailing the adventures of my brother getting cut by an eggplant to experimenting with the transparency filter for the autumn-themed artwork, I had a great time doing this project. Plus, knowing these letters and artwork would bring a smile to others' faces just made the purpose of making them way more heartfelt. 10/10 would recommend!

Charity Miles

I was super excited when I learned about Charity Miles because I think it’s great how anyone can raise money for the charity of their choice by downloading the app and logging in anytime they walk, run, or bike. I go on runs all the time, so I love how I’m able to raise money for charity just by bringing my phone. I really like how Charity Miles allows me to give back by doing something I would normally do, but it’s also a good motivator because I always try to run more if I still have the energy so that I can log the extra miles. When quarantine started, it was hard for me to find encouragement to continue exercising, but Charity Miles gave me an incentive to hit the treadmill or go outside for a stroll. I highly recommend Key Club members to use Charity Miles!

NOW PRESENTING KEY CLUB'S

31

MEMBER OF TH

Danny

This school year has been quite interesting in how we are learning remotely. It took a while to adjust to this new system of learning, but now I found more time in my schedule for doing volunteer work. Key Club is amazing due to the various amount of events available to do. This allows me to not get bored by any one event since there are so many other options. With quarantine still going on, doing Key Club events is a greatly enjoyable way to fill up the extra time we find ourselves with.

HE MONTH

Xiong

One of my favorite types of events is events where you create letters and cards for elder people and front line workers. With school happening, it is easy to forget about those that are still fighting hard every day to help stop the pandemic. Making cards on Canva is a fun experience due to the number of options Canva provides. Events like these are not only fun, but it allows you to do something great for the world. I truly enjoy events like this as it allows me to be creative. These cards could be made

with much more ease, but taking your time exploring the options for each card makes doing these events fun. Another event that I enjoyed was Smithsonian Transcription. I find this event very difficult as many documents required a more experienced expert to transcribe. However, there are some documents where the words are big and clear enough to read. They also allow you to transcribe audio recordings. These recordings are interesting to listen to and most of the time they are understandable.

These types of events allowed me to enjoy a summer where I was mostly home. I will continue to find time in my free time for these volunteering events as not only do they benefit the world, it provides me with something enjoyable to do. I am truly grateful for the existence of these fun events.
