Hello Key Clubbers! Thank you for tuning in for another issue of the Locksmith :) At the time of writing this, I know many of us have been busy with AP exams and other schoolwork. I know it's been hard and stressful, especially when we're all couped up inside our homes. Just know that you're never alone in your struggles and that things will get better, I promise! I've been having a lot of fun creating this March-April issue now that I'm able to be even more creative with the design. If you've skipped forward the next few pages of this issue, you may notice that some of the spreads look different. You can thank our new Locksmith directors, Keara O'Donnell and Mandy Li, for them! I have high hopes for what they'll bring to Locksmith for the 2021-2022 service year. Speaking of directors... make sure to read on for the introductions of our new Key Club board for the 2021-2022 service year! I know that they're all working hard to make sure our committees run smoothly. Speaking of committees (yes, I know this is another terrible segway)... Spring committee apps are open! If you ever want to be more involved in Key Club and possibly explore future leadership roles in the club, I highly recommend joining committees. It's never too early nor late to join. The four committee applications that we have open are Locksmith (that's us!), New Projects, Visual Media, and Fundraising! Okay, I think that will be it from me. I wish everyone the best of luck with their exams and for everyone to stay healthy as we approach the end of the school year. Get vaccinated if you can or help others get the opportunity to do so. I hope everyone has been doing well! I've personally been struggling in terms of motivation, but I know we can all push through these last few weeks of school (: Take advantage of mental health days and learn to prioritize yourself above all other things. Remote learning is hard and this pandemic has taken a toll on everyone. Please know that you're not alone and any one of the Cabinet members is available for conversation. I'm proud of your progress, and I believe in you! I'd like to thank everyone who has attended our fundraisers and club meetings, participating in events, and overall just keeping up with our updates. It has been a difficult year for Key Club, so your continued dedication and support means a lot! I'm excited to see what this service year holds for us given that we will be returning to inperson school in the fall. Perhaps as we transition into a semi-state of normalcy, we'll even be able to host in-person fundraisers and volunteer events again that I promise are a lot more fun! Hopefully, everyone is staying safe and following proper social distancing protocol. I highly encourage everyone to get vaccinated if they haven't done so already. I got my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine a few days ago, and my only advice is to make sure to stay really hydrated after! Thanks for reading the Locksmith! Hi everyone! ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ I hope you all have been doing well. These past few weeks have been pretty stressful considering it’s the end of a marking period. We still have a couple more weeks of school left which means it’s AP and finals season...boo :<. But besides that, I hope everyone is finding a source of comfort and support through their family, friends, or even Key Club :). Thank you to everyone who has attended our meetings or fundraisers, done some service events, or just made sure to stay updated. We really appreciate it. I know it’s been hard, and I’m super proud of everything we’ve accomplished so far. Let’s keep it up! Lately, I’ve found myself revisiting old (and current) Key Club events like Zooniverse and thoroughly enjoying the new projects they have. If you’re reading this, this is a sign to go do a service event right now :D (after you finish reading the Locksmith though). But honestly, I know it’s easy to lose motivation, especially in this pandemic. I hope that you all have someone to reach out to. Key Club is a safe space to vent so if you ever need it, please feel free to reach out to any one of us. That being said, the city is slowly but surely opening up, and vaccine appointments are rolling in. I hope that you all stay safe! We’re so close to the finish line. The only things standing in the way are APs and finals that I have yet to study for, and then it’s summer! I want to thank all of you for your dedication and support throughout this uncertain service year. Your passion for the Key Club motivates me to keep pushing through this last bit! We’ve raised over $600 dollars already from our Charity Miles and FFAC x StuyKC vegan master class, which is now definitely in my top 3 favorite fundraisers. For the month of June, make sure to keep an eye out for more amazing events and fundraisers including our sticker fundraiser, in collaboration with Project Kaleidoscope. Pre-orders have passed, but a new order form will be sent out soon for regular orders. They’re going fast so make sure to get yours before they’re all gone! For the time being, make sure to take some self-care days and prioritize your own physical and mental health. Stay strong! Hi everyone! Hope you're all doing well during AP season. It's definitely been super stressful, but I'm hoping it'll be all worth it once we get to the summer! All I've been doing for the past few weeks is cramming and doing homework nonstop, but I know that we can all push through till the end. I wanna thank everyone for continuing to be a committed member of Stuyvesant Key Club during these difficult virtual times. Also, we have new directors for our committees! I want to congratulate Ivy Jiang and Evelyn Chen for becoming the new directors of the Visual Media Committee. New Projects Hey Key Clubbers! I’m Ashley, and I’m so excited and honored to be one of your New Projects directors! I joined Key Club when I was a freshman and joined the New Projects Committee this year. As a director of the New Projects Committee, I will work closely with Danny, my co-director, and the rest of the committee to make sure you all are satisfied with and are enjoying your volunteering options. Here’s a little bit about me, if you were curious. My favorite ice cream flavor is a mixture of butter pecan and espresso. I know it sounds like such a weird combination, but it’s really good, I promise. I also love watching Netflix when I have free time; my favorite shows are Designated Survivor and Criminal Minds. My favorite movie of all time is The Prestige. My favorite singers are Lana Del Rey, Tame Impala, and Frank Ocean. My favorite foods are salmon avocado rolls and tteokbokki. Lastly, I’d like to thank Amanda and Jess for doing an amazing job of leading the New Projects Committee. Remember to join the New Projects Committee! Hey guys!! My name is Danny Xiong and I will be one of your New Projects Directors for the 2021-2022 service year. After two years of serving in the New Projects Committee, I will continue my commitment in this committee by becoming director. I am extremely excited to work closely with committee members and my co-director to carry on the previous success of the New Project Committee. We will continue to bring enjoyable volunteering events to you and prepare for the future as we transition back to an in-person service year. Hey everyone! My name is Isabella and I will be one of your fundraising co-directors for this service year! I’ve been involved with Key Club for a little over a year now and have made so many friends and memories within the organization. Outside of Key Club, I do dance (join latin, shameless plug), bake a whole lot, and spend most of my time with my BSA Scout Troop. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream, scrolling on tiktok for hours, and playing minecraft (you should play with me). Raymond and I are super excited to put our plans for the committee into action; including securing grants, collaborating with clubs and organizations both inside and out of Stuy, and of course, bringing you new and exciting fundraisers. As we bridge back into in-person fundraising, I am confident that we can break our fundraising goal (which is still to be determined). Finally, a big shoutout to Fanny and Ashley for running such an amazing committee last service year and setting the bar very high. I can’t wait to work with you all and don’t forget to apply to join the committee!

Hi Key Clubbers! My name is Raymond Zou (he/him), and I’m thrilled to be a co-director for the fundraising committee this service year. I am a current sophomore, and have been part of Key Club and its fundraising committee since freshman year. Key Club has played such an important role in my high school career, providing me with so many opportunities and allowing me to meet so many different types of people. As a fundraising director I hope to give back to this community, and do my part to maintain its already high standard in terms of fundraisers. With the world slowly recovering from COVID-19, I’m especially excited to start hosting in-person fundraisers again. Visual Media Hi everyone! I’m Evelyn, and I’m really excited to be one of your new Visual Media Committee directors! As a quick self-introduction, I’m a current sophomore at Stuy. Though I’ve been in Key Club since my freshman year, it’s only recently that I’ve been part of the Visual Media Committee. My hobbies are sketching, writing creative pieces, running, and listening to music. The Visual Media Committee is in charge of promoting Key Club through social media, promoting events and fundraisers through cool posters, making fun recap videos, and more! We’re super eager to begin the transition back to in-person promoting as well. Even if you don’t have any prior experience in visual media but would like to learn, we’ll love to have you. Though the past year has been understandingly hectic for many, there’s still much that we can accomplish, and we’re still going strong! To get to know me a little better, I really enjoy drawing, binging anime (don’t hesitate to give me any recommendations), listening to music, and talking with my friends during my free time. Visual Locksmith Media Hello everyone! My name is Keara O’Donnell, and I’m honored to be one of the Locksmith directors for the 2021-2022 service year! (*^ ^*) I joined Stuyvesant KC during the summer of 2020, and although I haven’t experienced any in-person events yet, I’ve really enjoyed the selection of virtual events! The Key Club community has also been really helpful and supportive, and I enjoy listening to everyone’s stories or advice. I then joined the Locksmith last December, and I’ve had a lot of fun designing pages on Canva, and bonding with the other committee members.

Here’s a little bit about me! When I’m not stressing over homework or exams, I’ve been drawing, playing the piano or hanging online with friends. I enjoy watching animators or Minecraft Youtubers. Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that works with the support of young people to END the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe, clean drinking water.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is changing the lives of children with cancer by funding impactful research, raising awareness, supporting families and empowering everyone to help cure childhood cancer.

Key Club International’s Summer Leadership Conference, our second virtual conference, is July 8-10! This event will feature speakers, workshops and fun fellowship opportunities and bring together Key Clubbers from around the world.

Ongoing Events

Time: Anytime!

Volunteers will be donating grains by answering questions through the FreeRice app! Each question is equal to 5 grains of rice donated to charity!

Volunteers will be helping to plant trees through miles! Just download the atlasGO app and start running/walking. Since it also calculates miles, hours will be given through Charity Miles but download the app to help our environment!

Time: Anytime! Volunteers will be raising money by walking/running, whether it be marching around the house, running stairs, or going for a jog (if you are jogging outside, be sure to adhere to social distancing!) Each mile is equal to $0.25 donated to charity!

Time: Whenever! Volunteers will be raising money for their favorite animal welfare organization by walking, whether it be around the house or around their neighborhood. (Be sure to adhere to social distancing!) Each mile walked is equal to $0.20 donated to charity!

Time: Whenever! Volunteers will be describing how they’ve been spending their quarantine, and giving updates on their lives. This material will be featured in the bi-monthly updates of the Locksmith.

Volunteers will play a variety of online quizzes to earn "beans" that will translate into donations to different charities (Feeding America, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and more!)

Time: Whenever! Description: Volunteers will tutor K-8 students throughout the city in a variety of subjects including dance, biology and math.

Time: Whenever! Volunteers will be creating subtitles for TED videos after watching an instructional video and submitting a TED translator and transcriber application

Time: Whenever! Volunteers will be virtually tutoring elementary and middle school students from Shuang Wen School. (P.S./M.S. 184) Subjects range from English and Math State Tests to the SHSAT.

Time: Whenever! Volunteers will be identifying phrases from pictures and scrambled words to donate money to UNICEF. Each unscrambled phrase donates $0.25!

Time: Whenever! Volunteers will help convert Public Domain books into e-books by proofreading text with Distributed Proofreaders.

How has/is COVID-19 affecting you?

Covid-19 has actually improved my communication with friends. In regular school and when life was normal, I would be really busy with school work and just life in general. But because of quarantine I had nothing else to do, so I could reach out and spend some quality time with my friends. Some friends which I haven't talked to in years, began reaching out, and I've also made several new ones.

Share some productive things you've done/been doing during quarantine!

Over quarantine I have been learning how to code, I've been doing alot of python and java practice and just trying to learn these languages. I have also started baking, and I make some mean egg tarts.

Any fun future plans/ambitions once quarantine is over?

I want to cook with a couple of my friends. We want to make dumplings and other food. In general we just want to cram at one person's house and have fun. 24

Stories

How has/is COVID-19 affecting you? Personally, I dislike remote learning. I'm not retaining any of the information that's being fed to me and my work ethic has also noticeably been affected as well. I'm not learning as effectively and I'm struggling to find the motivation to complete my assignments. That being said, it's important to note that I'm only one of the many students who are dealing with this situation. I'm not alone in this and neither are any of you who might be feeling the same way. I can't wait to return back to school this September! Hopefully, COVID will have more or less settled down and everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated takes advantage of such a privilege so we can all learn in-person safely again.

Share some productive things you've done/been doing during quarantine! I used to be a heavy reader in elementary and middle school but that

came to an abrupt stop with the beginning of high school. I've been trying to get back into the habit of reading everyday and am open to any book recommendations! I particularly enjoy mystery/thriller but I also really like fantasy as well.

Any fun future plans/ambitions once quarantine is over? I'd love to start planning in-person fundraisers again! Virtual fundraising definitely doesn't have the same thrill to it and I can't wait to hosting events like our annual Governors Island Fundraiser and Dave & Buster's Fundraiser. I attended both as a freshman and I'll be a senior in the fall, so a lot of time has passed since then.

Tabs For a Cause Ashley Tian

My favorite event this month was definitely Tab for a Cause! With Zoom classes during the day and more Zoom meetings for clubs and other extracurriculars after school, it's safe to say that I'm on my laptop a lot. Tab for a Cause allows me to make the best out of my time by simultaneously raising money for various charities with each new tab I open. It's a great and simple way to give back to our community especially in this time of chaos. In this week alone, I've managed to raise 94 hearts which I can then donated to a charity of my choice!

When I first saw the events list updated with Tab for A Cause, I was excited to get started. In this event, every tab you open in your search engine equals a heart which when donated, helps raise money for a charity. It was incredibly easy to install the extension and now, I can see how many tabs I open every day. The most I’ve ever opened in a day was 66! The greatest thing about Tab for A Cause is how it spotlights a specific charity that is actually chosen by its users every week/month. You could even contact them to recommend a charity. On the day I’m writing this, they spotlighted Covid-19 Relief for CARE India. I think it’s amazing how we’re able to help raise money for charity by simply going about our days on our laptops.

Smithsonian Transcription

In my opinion, the Smithsonian Transcriptions is one of the most interesting virtual events. The Smithsonian Transcriptions have their own difficulty setting This will help you find projects to work on according to your skill set. It is an interesting experience to work alongside many other people across the internet on certain projects. They also have a great number of audio projects. Personally, I really enjoy doing audio projects because they are much easier but still just as fun. It is honestly very cool to look at these old documents and a good challenge to do your best interpreting what is on your screen. Overall, one of my favorite volunteering events this virtual year and I believe everyone should give this event a try!

If you ever thought, “huh I’m really good at reading terrible handwriting,” then this is the event for you! From formatting data entries to attempting to read a scholar’s research paper from centuries ago, there is always a way to help the Smithsonian. There are hundreds of available pages on dozens of documents that are available for transcription, review, or approval. Each document serves as a gateway to a piece of history, showing you the less talked about discoveries in the world. This event will provide you with the historic knowledge to impress anyone.

“Woah is that a chicken?” my brother shouted from across the room, referring to the project I had pulled up on Zooniverse. In this case, he was correct. At that moment, I was working on my favorite event, Nest Cams. All I had to do was watch a short clip of a bird and classify whether they were standing or sitting, walking or sleeping. Zooniverse is an event where there are so many options, you almost feel overwhelmed. To combat that feeling, Zooniverse provides detailed information on how to complete each and every event, as well as a discussion forum to discuss any problems you may have with hundreds of other volunteers. This is a great event for first time volunteers and lots of fun.

Sabrina chen Hi everyone! I first started my Key Club journey in freshman year when my sister from Bronx Science Key Club brought me (and Ashley Tian :)) to a fundraiser. There I was introduced to key clubbers from Stuyvesant which was incredible. I remember feeling overwhelmed by all the people there but I also really wanted to be a part of it.

I got pretty involved in Key Club, joining the Fundraising Committee (shoutout to you guys!) and going to as many events/fundraisers as I possibly could. My favorite fundraiser that I’ve attended is BounceU in 2019 (wowie, a long time ago) because I never even knew a place like that existed. I had so much fun bouncing around this huge area with bounce house setups and obstacle courses (yes, it is as much fun as it is childish.) This fundraiser raised money for the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation! Being able to help out a deserving cause is really what Key Club is all about. My Key Club experience being both in-person and online has been so rewarding. I’ve been able to do so many diverse activities (thanks to New Projects). My favorite online event has to be Letters to Strangers because I really resonate with the message of spreading mental health awareness. Not only that but sharing your thoughts in a letter to a stranger is really rewarding because you can speak comfortably without feeling judged. I really enjoy reading the letters I get and learning from other peoples’ experiences. I hope to continue doing more events and getting to know more people! Summer is coming up soon so let’s keep up it! I’m really excited for the future of Key Club, and hopefully, I’ll get to meet some of you guys if we go back to in-person. Until then, see you at the meetings and divisionals!
