Multi-Trades and Vocational Studies
Our country was built of the back of skilled tradespeople and at St Vincent we are proud of our place as Gosport’s only Post-16 provider for multi-trade qualifications.

Students will learn the skills of their trades in our new state of the art construction and carpentry facilities. Here students will apply the knowledge they have learnt whilst developing their technical skills under the tuition and support of teachers with extensive industry experience.
Students will benefit from learning in a realistic working environment where they will hone the skills and knowledge needed for them to successfully move on to sustained employment when they qualify.
CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME AVAILABLE AT LEVELS 3, 2 AND 1
As part of this exciting programme you will enjoy learning both the theory and practical skills required to provide you with an extensive range of skills that will prepare you for your career in the construction industry.
You will train in fully-equipped workshops, using the same machinery and tools you can expect to use in the workplace.
This course is perfect for students who are unsure which trade they would like to go into.
Course duration:
One year.
Entry requirements:
No minimum entry requirements. If you have not achieved a Level 4 and above for Maths and English this will be a mandatory requirement of the course.
What students will learn:
You will study a range of units with topics including: Health & Safety in construction, Plastering, Painting and Decorating, including Wall Papering and finally Carpentry skills.
These units will help you form a wide range of skills in demand with local employers to improve your chances of gaining employment within the industry.
You will complete written and practical work throughout the year. You will also complete English and Maths qualifications.
Progression routes:
On completion you would be eligible to continue onto Level 2 programmes such as Painting and Decorating or Plastering.
CARPENTRY (SITE)
LEVEL 3
The Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry qualification has been developed for achievement in a training environment which means you do not need to be employed to undertake this qualification.
This qualification enables you, the learner, to demonstrate and recognise your skills, knowledge and understanding so you can work as a Site Carpenter within the construction industry.
Course duration:
Two years.
Entry requirements:
You will need to complete the Level 2 Carpentry programme before progressing onto this course.
Progression routes:
Site Carpentry.
LEVEL 2
You will learn all aspects of Site Carpentry, including building methods, first fixing, second fixing, structural carcassing and maintenance. You will also cover aspects of Health and Safety issues and how to maintain good working relationships, both with colleagues and customers. You will be trained by an experienced tradesperson in our purpose-designed Construction Centre.
You will be taught in a well-equipped workshop with all the up-to-date resources associated with this type of course. You will have the opportunity to use this equipment to develop your skills in Carpentry and Joinery. You will be closely tutored in all aspects of the course.
Safety is a prime objective and you will be expected to provide suitable safety footwear.
Duration: One year.
Entry requirements:
5 GCSEs grade 4-9 or completion of Level 1 Construction.
Possible combinations:
This is a full-time course in its own right.
Progression routes:
Level 3 Carpentry, apprenticeships or employment.
PAINTING AND DECORATING
LEVEL 2
The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding to progress into a job role in the industry.
This qualification provides learners with a range of painting and decorating skills and knowledge. Learners will also develop an understanding of the health and safety requirements for working in the construction industry, and the industry itself.
Course duration:
One year.
Entry requirements:
5 GCSEs grade 2-9 including a grade 4 in Maths or successful completion of the Level 1 Construction Multi-trades course.
What students will learn:
The course is in unit form and you will be expected to complete all units for the full qualification.
• Construction health and safety • The construction industry • Preparing surfaces for decorating • Apply paint by brush and roller • Apply standard coverings to walls and ceilings • Produce decorative finishes • Construction information, quantities and communications
An integral part of all of the units will be Health and Safety. Throughout the course you will be able to use your work as evidence for all areas. If you are the kind of person who enjoys using your hands and would like to develop these skills, this is the ideal course for you!
Assessment:
Assessment portfolio, externally assessed examination, practical assessment.
Enrichment opportunities:
Purposeful Work Experience & Community projects. Outside speakers from the painting, decorating and construction world.
Possible combinations: This is a full-time course.
Progression routes:
On completion you would be eligible to continue onto the Level 3 Painting and Decorating course.
PLASTERING
LEVEL 2
The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding to progress into a job role in the industry.
This qualification provides learners with a range of plastering skills and knowledge. Learners will also develop an understanding of the health and safety requirements for working in the construction industry, and the industry itself.
Course duration:
One year.
Entry requirements:
5 GCSEs grade 2-9 including a grade 4 in Maths and/or English.
What students will learn:
The course is in unit form and you will be expected to complete all units for the full qualification.
• Construction health and safety • The construction industry • Apply plaster to internal surfaces • Apply render to external surfaces • Preparing background surfaces for plasterwork • Fix dry lining and plasterboard products

If you have left or are leaving school and are still unsure of your career path, this course maybe for you.
The Vocational Studies course lets you choose 3 from the following options
• Sport • Health & Social Care • IT/Digital Media • Hospitality & Catering • Retail • Construction
You will have the opportunity to investigate these industries to help you form a better idea of which career route you would wish to explore more. Alongside these options you will also gain valuable Work skills and carry out Enterprise activities.

One year
Entry requirements:
No minimum entry requirement. If you have not yet gained Grade 4 in English and/or Maths, this will form a mandatory part of your programme.

The course is in unit form and you will be expected to complete all the units for the full qualification. Examples of some of the units you may be studyIng are:

To progress onto further study of one of your options.
LEVEL 1 EXTENDED CERTIFICATE
During the 1 or 2-year programme you will get the opportunity to study from a choice of vocational options.
• Hospitality • Child Care • Public Services • IT/Game design • Performing Arts
All students not yet at Level 2 will study Functional Skills in Maths and Literacy.
There are also plenty of ways to enrich your timetable; these could include Health and Fitness, John Muir Award, Work Experience and we also offer a varied enrichment programme.
You will have a dedicated tutor and support staff available to help you learn and develop your study skills alongside thinking about which career direction you would like to take in the future, and the skills you need to develop to make it happen.
