Our Sports department is consistently ranked as one of the highest performing sports courses in the country. This has led to student success not only in the classroom but also the sports field with the College crowned league and cup double winners in 2020.

Students will access vibrant teaching and be able to develop their coaching, fitness and leadership skills throughout their study programme. This has enabled many students to progress to some of the most prestigious university courses in the country and led to many students pursuing careers in the sports industry.

SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

LEVEL 3 TRIPLE

This qualification will allow students to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to deliver sport and physical activity to an individual or group of participants, plus identify those who would benefit most from participation; select which sport or physical activity would be best for them, and how to organise, coordinate and facilitate different events or programmes of activity that allow people to actively engage in and enjoy sport and physical activity. This can be in a more ‘office-based’ role such as a Sport Development Officer or Community Sport Officer who is responsible for organising events, obtaining funding to run events, identifying target groups, supporting the recruitment of staff and volunteers to run events and activities and ensuring the sustainability of sport and physical activity. Or it can be in a more ‘field-based’ role such as a Senior Sports Coach or Senior Activity Leader responsible for delivering sport and physical activities, as well as co-ordinating the activities of other coaches and activity leaders and promoting the benefits of participation and leading a healthy lifestyle to schools, community groups and/or other target groups.

Students will develop their knowledge of a wide range of sport and physical activity topics, from anatomy and physiology to psychology, from fitness to sports participation, to event planning to working in leisure facilities.

Course duration: Two years.

Entry requirements: Five GCSEs at Grade 4 and above. English or Maths at Grade 4 must be achieved.

How students will learn: Mixture of theory and practical sessions.

Assessment: Written exams, oral exams, course work.

Student profile:

Someone who loves sport, fitness and being active and has a passion for learning more about how the body works and the influence of different factors on an individual’s sport and physical activity participation.

Enrichment opportunities:

Trip to New York City, NCS, weekly fixtures for Netball and Football Teams.

Possible combinations:

Netball and Football academy, GBFC Centre of Excellence, Maths/English GCSE if required.

Progression routes:

University, career in sport/leisure.

Potential university courses:

Sport and PE Coaching, Sport Therapy, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Sport and Exercise Science.

ELITE FOOTBALL ACADEMY PROGRAMME

LEVEL 3 AND 2

This programme, in conjunction with Gosport Borough Football Club (GBFC), is designed for footballers who are looking to progress as a player into a Pro/Semi-Pro club, a Scholarship in the USA, or onto a university degree course in the UK.

The whole programme is between two and three years long and combines lessons with training and fixtures so that the course that you are studying will be a part of your development as a player.

Together, we aim to help players achieve the highest standard of football possible. Possible exit routes from the St Vincent and GBFC Elite Football Academy are: into professional and semiprofessional Football Clubs though our links within the game; onto a US Scholarship where you can play and learn at one of the universities or onto a degree course at a UK university to study any sport-related degree.

Football: GBFC will deliver over 12 hours of first class football training as part of the Elite Football Academy Programme. You will compete in fixtures, which provides a high-quality experience for 16-19 year olds on the pitch. Education: You will complete a sport qualification. You will be enrolled on a sport qualification relevant to your exam results.

Course duration:

Between two and three years depending on entry qualifications.

Entry requirements:

As this is an Elite Football Academy, before being accepted onto this programme your footballing ability will be assessed by Gosport Borough Football Club.

Possible combinations:

This is a full time course in its own right. Students who are yet to gain a Grade 4 in English and/or Maths will need to re-sit these GCSEs alongside this course.

Progression routes:

A career in the world of football either as a player, coach or match official. Higher Education – degrees in sport e.g. PE teaching, coaching, sports therapy, sports science, exercise referral and sports development. Employment in the sports industry.

SPORT LEVEL 2

The Level 2 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity qualification aims to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills of the essentials of Sport. Students will gain an insight into the Sport and Physical Activity industry. Designed in collaboration with industry experts the qualifications focus on the requirements that today’s employers demand.

Course duration:

One year.

Entry requirements: 5 GCSEs Grade 2-3.

What students will learn:

Practical Sport - By completing this unit, learners will develop their skills, techniques and use of tactics/strategies in selected sports, as well as their understanding of the rules and the roles of officials. They will learn how to review a performance and identify areas of strength and weakness.

Anatomy and Physiology for Sport - The aim of this unit is to give learners a basic underpinning knowledge of the function and structure of the systems in the human body, linking to exercise and sporting activities

Fitness Testing and Training - In this unit learners will learn about the different components of fitness and actively engage in assessing their own fitness and identifying their strengths and weaknesses. Comparing their fitness with national norms and relating it to what is needed to achieve excellence in sport. They will also look at how lifestyle choices have an impact on their fitness and how psychological factors can have an influence on performance, providing the learner with a better understanding of fitness and fitness testing.

Planning and Leading Sports Activities - By completing this unit learners will develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills to enable them to plan, lead, deliver and review safe and effective sporting activities.

How students will learn:

Mixture of theory and practical lessons.

Assessment: Coursework.

Student profile:

Someone who has an interest in working in sport and physical activity or progressing to L3 Sport.

Enrichment opportunities:

NCS and trips to New York City.

Possible combinations:

Repeat Maths and English GCSE and GBFC Centre of Excellence.

If you have already achieved Grade 4 Maths or English GCSE, students can combine this course with L2 Uniformed Protective Services and either Maths or English GCSE.

Progression routes:

OCR L3 Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity.

Potential university courses:

• PE and Sport Coaching • Sport and Exercise Science • Sports Therapy

Potential career paths:

• Recreation Assistant in a Leisure Centre • Lifeguard • Personal Trainer/Fitness Instructor • PE Teacher • Sports Coach • Activity leader at summer camps/ playschemes

SPORTS LEADERSHIP

LEVEL 3

This is an exciting and challenging award. The course will provide you with the opportunity to develop your communication, planning and organisational skills.

Students will develop leadership skills, planning, delivering and evaluating a progressive series of inclusive sport/physical activity sessions, including leading sessions to a range of participant groups. It will will include planning, delivering and evaluating an event.

This course will enable students to continue to further develop their leadership skills and to achieve a second nationally recognised qualification that will enable access to further opportunities and qualifications.

Course duration:

One year.

Entry requirements:

Five GCSEs grade 4-9 or successful completion of the Level 2. Qualification in Community Sports Leadership is usually a pre-requisite but individual applications will be considered on merit. Interest and passion for sport, working with children and further developing skills in sports/activity leadership.

Assessment:

Coursework/portfolio of evidence supported by practical activity and event leading that is observed and assessed internally.

Enrichment opportunities:

Students will be involved in different events and activities that may take place both on, and away from, the college site.

Possible combinations:

Sports and Uniformed Protective Services.

Potential career paths:

Sports coaching, PE teaching, Event management, Health and fitness instructing.

LEVEL 2

Students will develop leadership skills, planning, delivering and evaluating sport/physical activity sessions and events.

This course will help learners build leadership skills, plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions, assist in planning and leading a sports/physical activity event, and lead sport/ physical activity sessions communities.

Course duration:

One year.

Entry requirements:

Five GCSEs grade 2-3. Interest and passion for sport, working with children and developing skills in sports/activity leadership.

Assessment:

Coursework/portfolio of evidence supported by practical activity and event leading that is observed and assessed internally.
