HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

LEVEL 3 TRIPLE

The health and social care industry is one of the fastest growing in the UK – people are living longer and there is an increasing need for care and support as well as working with young people. By studying Health and Social Care you will learn how to help others improve their physical health and impact the wellbeing of people in your community as well as developing skills in working with service users. If you want to help make a positive difference to people’s lives then Health and Social Care is the course for you.

This course is the flagship ‘Pathway to Healthcare and Social Work programme’ for those who are ambitious to work within the Allied Health Professionals field, Care, Social Care and education sectors. Learners will gain experience of the breadth and depth that will prepare them for further study in the sector.

Course duration:

2 years.

Entry requirements:

A standard of literacy, numeracy and general education equivalent to five GCSEs grade 4+ including 4 in English Language and/or Literature and Maths.

What students will learn:

Externally: Human Lifespan Development, Working in Health and Social Care, Anatomy and Physiology and Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care. Internally: Meeting Individual Care And Support Needs, Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care, Promoting Public Health, Work Experience in Health and Social Care, Psychological Perspectives, Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs, Nutritional Health, Caring for Individuals with Dementia and Physiological Disorders.

How students will learn:

Throughout the course, you will explore a variety of topics through classroom based learning. This includes lecture style sessions, group work, research projects, flip learning and individual assignment based study. You will also learn practical skills such as how to undertake risk assessments, training in safeguarding, and first aid. Real world scenarios are embedded in the course to allow students to access current trends and changes in the sector.

Assessment:

Written exams, course work,100 hours of mandatory vocational practice in local healthcare organisations.

Enrichment opportunities:

First Aid / AED qualification / DBS check are part of the course; all students undertake the vocational work placement (100 hours), visiting lecturers/professionals from Health, Social Work and Medical related fields, event days with the Universities of Portsmouth, Southampton, Chichester and Winchester.

Possible combinations:

This qualification is a full-time study programme.

Progression routes:

Preparation for health and social care related employment, apprenticeships or HE/ degree programmes.

Potential university courses:

Nursing (Adult, Child or Mental Health), Paramedic Science, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practitioner, Midwifery, Primary Education.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

LEVEL 2

This is a one year course that will help you to gain the knowledge, understanding and competency needed when considering employment in the Health, Social and Care sectors. You will have the opportunity to apply theory to practice during work placement. You will be expected to produce a portfolio of evidence which reflects your knowledge and understanding of the units studied.

Course duration:

One year.

Entry requirements:

You should be able to show that you have a standard of literacy, numeracy and general education equivalent to five GCSEs at Grade 2 or above.

What students will learn:

Communication, Safeguarding, Principles of The Care Value Base and Person-centred Care, Exam skills, Health Conditions and The Human Body, Duty of Care and how it applies to all aspects of Health and Social Care.

Assessment:

Externally assessed exam and internally assessed course work.

Enrichment Opportunities: Work placement programmes, visiting lecturers and professionals, First Aid training / AED Training/Health and Safety / Mental and Wellbeing enrichment

Possible combinations:

Level 2 Health enables you to resit Maths and English qualifications to obtain a grade 4. If you have achieved Maths or English, you can choose a second Level 2 course.

Progression routes:

You could progress onto one of our Level 3 Pathway programmes. BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care (single or triple courses). Employment in the Health and Social Care sectors.
