Editor’s Note

Corpus Christi’s Film Festival The South Texas Underground Film Festival is the only Corpus Christi Film Festival and it’s always a blast to catch indie films that you otherwise would probably never see. This year is no exception as short films and feature films from Chile and Finland as well as local films shot in and around the Corpus area will be playing side-by-side through the four day film fest.

This year we’ll get two feature films that have been making a splash at other film festivals around the globe. ‘Bad Turn Worse’ (see pg.8) will be screening on Sunday as it’s simultaneously released in limited American theaters. The movie was filmed just up the road in Taft, Texas which is a small town which is basically just some grain silos, a few stores and a railroad still in use. The fact that a film was shot there is pretty amazing. And the fact that it received numerous accolades and distribution only adds to the esteem the film garnered.

ite childhood films, Van Damme’s ‘Cyborg.’ Needless to say, Pyun has been around a while. There’s a slew of great looking films playing through the four days and I can’t wait to try and catch them all.

And of course I can’t help but plug my own film, ‘SCUM’, which is also playing at the festival Saturday morning. Even though it’s four years old, it’s nice to know that someone still wants to screen it. It’s playing during the South Texas Films block of the festival where it’ll be joined by another two films The other movie is ‘The made here in South Texas. ack in 2008, B e l i n d a Edwards of Alectra Art/Axis Tattoo told her friend and business neighbor Michelle Smythe of K Space Contemporary art studio that she wanted to throw a Dia de los Muertos Party. movie review

NOVEMBER 10-DECEMBER 8, 2014

Keaton soars to new heights in ‘Birdman’ and proves it’s never too late to go a little mad

by Paul Gonzales

Michael Keaton has been around for quite a while. He’s had a whole slew of iconic roles in films such as “Batman,” “Beetlejuice” and “Multiplicity” but you have never seen him like this. And it’s pretty amazing. “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” is about a washed-up actor, Riggan (Keaton), who once

played iconic superhero Birdman and must now overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory. Keaton is in pretty much every frame of the film as the camera follows him around in what seems like one long uncut shot. Now, we’ve all seen his range as an actor but in “Birdman” he seems stripped of all his tools like makeup and props and just leaps into a role that most actors couldn’t handle. But he knocks it out of the park. The film centers on Keaton as he slowly

Did you know? • The movie was largely shot inside Broadway’s St. James Theatre - Michael Keaton and the rest of the cast had to adapt to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s rigorous shooting style, which required them to perform up to 15 pages of dialogue at a time while hitting precisely choreographed marks.

loses his mind dealing with his daughter (Emma Stone)who just left rehab, his ex-wife (Amy Ryan) who tries to still believe in him and the cocky Broadway superstar (Edward Norton) who steps in to fill out the cast when a mishap injures one of the key players. As one disaster after another unfolds during the production, Keaton begins to lose both his mind and grasp on reality. And the film gets strange really quick, but in a good way. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu is known for his Oscar nominated films such

• Norton listed Night Shift (1982), Mr. Mom (1983), and Beetlejuice (1988) as three of his favorite Keaton films he grew up on. • This is the first leading role for Michael Keaton in six years. His previous starring role to this was The Merry Gentleman (2008), which he also directed.

once having played an iconic superhero himself. Overall the film is a fun romp filled with surprises and superb acting from everyone involved. There are numerous times throughout where you’ll laugh out loud at the insanity that unspools on screen. And this may be the role that gets Keaton his first Oscar nomination if not the golden statue itself. “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” is in limited release and will continue to expand across America in the following weeks.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice 2?

• Given the unusual style of filming long takes, Edward Norton and Michael Keaton kept a running tally of flubs made by the actors. Emma Stone made the most mistakes, Zach Galifianakis made the fewest. • Michael Keaton said this movie was the most challenging he has ever done. He also said that the personality of his character Riggan is the most dissimilar to himself of any he has ever played.

as “Amores Perros” and “Babel” but has never made a film like “Birdman.” As mentioned before, the film seems to be one long shot as the days bleed in to one another and we actually see Keaton become more unhinged in every frame. And the tricks he employs from hiding cameras in plain view or having actors appear and disappear before your eyes is pretty stunning. Keaton turns in the performance of his career as the battered, aging actor who may have took some inspiration from his own life

W

hile Michael Keaton was doing his press tour for “Robocop” reboot, he told MTV that “Beetlejuice 2” may be pretty close to happening. “I’ve emailed Tim (Burton) a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary

stuff until relatively recently,” Keaton said during the interview. “I always said that [Beetlejuice] is the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another. Now it looks like he is involved. And without giving too much away, we’ve talked to each other, and emailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.” Winona Ryder also chimed in who played Lydia Deetz in the original. “I’m kind of sworn to secrecy,” she said. “But it sounds like it might be happening.” She also added that it would

not be a remake. “It’s 27 years later,” Ryder said. “And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.” Writers are currently working on a screenplay and Burton and Keaton seem interested, so it it looks like a sure thing. But with Burton’s next movie, “Big Eyes”, set to release next month and his film adaptation of the novel “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” in pre-production, he’s going to be a bit busy. So now it’s not ‘if’ it will happen but ‘when.’

Diagnosed with a debilitating disease,

filmmaker Albert Pyun defies the odds and returns with a

new award winning film

story by Paul Gonzales

ou may not know his name, but there’s a good chance you know his films. Albert Pyun is the director of such cult films as “Cyborg” (JeanClaude Van Damme), “The Sword and the Sorcerer” and 1990s “Captain America.” He’s been Hollywood’s go-to guy for churning out low budget genre fare for

nearly 30 years, and it seemed like he was ready to give it all up when he was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Pyun announced his retirement from the film business because of the disease but soon after decided he wasn’t done just yet. On Oct. 30th, his latest

film, “The Interrogation of Cheryl Cooper,” took home 10 awards including Best Picture at Las Vegas’ Polygrind film festival. It was a bittersweet celebration as the film festival will likely close its doors for good following its fifth annual festival.

“The Interrogation of Cheryl Cooper” is filmed in one long, continuous take as a young woman wakes up in a room she assumes is a police interrogation room. A detective tells her she is the only survivor of a mass killing that evening, and as the detective has the woman recount the night and the killings, other memories are dredged up, making her interrogation a true nightmare.

The amazing thing about Pyun is that even though he was in fact battling a debilitating disease, he decided to tackle a film with such a degree of difficulty, only proving that he wasn’t going any“It’s only fitting that where quite yet. And because of the sucwe have our grand finale, which is being called cess of the film, he has Victory Night on the three films coming out in night before Halloween, 2015 and probably a few which many, of course, more in the years that refer to as Hell Night.” follow. “It’s been a hell of a year and an even crazier October,” founder and festival director Chad Clinton Freeman said with a laugh in a recent interview on www.twitchfilm.com.

“The Interrogation of Cheryl Cooper” makes its Texas premiere this Thursday, Nov. 13, during the opening night of the South Texas Underground Film Festival. It will screen with other Polygrind Film Festival films “Tasmanian Tiger” and “Heidi” at the House of Rock, 511 Starr St. in Corpus Christi, at 8:45 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Albert Pyun has pretty much worked under some of the roughest restrictions while making films over the years, but that hasn’t stopped him from making some memorable cult classics. Here’s a handful of his best flicks.

CYBORG 1989

This Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi classic was filmed using left over sets and props from the proposed “Masters of the Universe 2” and “SpiderMan” film under Cannon Films. It was the last theatrical release by the company before going bankrupt.

NEMESIS 1992

Another cyborg flick, this one featured Olivier Gruner at his peak of popularity. It’s a fun movie with pretty decent FX created by Gene Warren who went on to do the special effects on “Terminator 2: Judgement Day.” There were multiple sequels with Pyun’s involvement.

SWORD AND THE SORCERER THE

1982

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT ‘The Interrogation of Cheryl Cooper” was filmed in real time in one take with no edits. Director Albert Pyun was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and announced his retirement but came back and made this film showing he’s not quite finished yet.

One of many sword and sandel pics that arose from the popularity of “Conan: The Barbarian” and shot on a pretty decent budget. There were dudes with muscles, hot chicks and magic, so of course I watched it a lot when I was a kid.

As he slowly tries to piece together the events that led to his father’s death, a resentful and confused Mike begins to uncover a set of closely held family secrets that

Stephen Belyeu grew up in a tiny, sequestered town in South Texas. He credits his passion for film to the isolation he faced growing up in the middle of nowhere with little to do except watch movies and wander off with his own imagination. Belyeu went on to receive his Bachelors Degree in Film from Texas A&M University. Upon graduation, Belyeu moved to Austin to further pursue his interests in film. While working on his own film projects, Belyeu began teaching filmmaking to youth through various organizations in the Austin area, including the City of Austin Parks and Recreation, Austin School of Film, and the Austin Film Society. Now, Belyeu is an award winning writer/director. His debut feature film, “Dig,” competed in the 2010 Austin Film Festival and took home the Narrative Feature Audience Award. In 2011, Belyeu became involved with AFF as the Film Competition Programmer and Director of Youth Education. In 2012, he stepped down to pursue his next feature, “The Father.”

The film was executive produced by Sal Hernandez of the awardwinning independent film company STX Media and directed by Jacob Grim. The two men run STX Media and have recently branched out in to personal appearance management for horror icons Teri McMinn and Ed Guinn, who were original cast members of the 1974 classic “The Texas

Chain Saw Massacre,” and Barbara Magnolfi, who played Olga in Dario Argento’s “Suspiria”. “Dreadtime Stories” will screen at 3 p.m. with the director and producer in tow to answer any questions. The purpose of the showcase is to draw attention to the South Texas area and bring more film productions, both big and small, to the region.
