nless, of course, it’s a Style Readers’ Choice Award! In that case, winning is quite impressive. Over the years, our annual contest of readers’ choices for local favorites has become the talk of the town, with competition becoming increasingly fierce. We are all presented with hundreds, if not thousands of choices a day – some decisions easier than others – but the ones we celebrate this month are those shared by many. After Roseville resident Janet Zeitman retired from a career as an elementary school teacher 20 years ago, something was missing. Her own children were grown, and she missed the social interaction of her teaching days. “I needed a way to get out and be in the community, to see what other people were doing,” Zeitman explains. She began volunteering her time for a variety of local groups, including after-school tutoring programs and Habitat for Humanity. In 1992, she and her husband drove to Florida to help with Habitat for Humanity’s rehousing effort following Hurricane Andrew; the experience made Zeitman even more aware of the positive impact she and other volunteers 12 stylemg.com - October 2012

could make on people’s lives. In addition to spearheading an oak tree planting campaign at Sun City, for the past three years Zeitman has volunteered her time at the Roseville Utility Exploration Center, educating children about the importance of recycling and the conservation of water and electricity. Last year, she won the Sylvia Besana Community Volunteer Award, but for Zeitman, the best reward is the enjoyment she gets from working with the children who come to the Center. “I love being with kids and seeing their excitement when they’re learning something new,” Zeitman shares. — Amber Foster

ctober 12 marks the official birthday of the Carnegie Library, now a museum operated by the Roseville Historical Society. To celebrate 100 years of service and programs in the local community, the Roseville Public Library will mark the occasion with a large party, photo displays and a new service for visitors of Old Town Roseville: a mobile walking tour. Join the Roseville Library Centennial Celebration at Family Fun Day from noon to 4 p.m. on October 20 at the Downtown Library. It’s an attempt to impose an objective system on a subjective subject and it has many problems, as one would expect. Point systems are popular with marketers because they appear to be an easy way to tout quality. This is good, because most highpoint-garnering wines are good wines, so it works with all kinds of buyers. However, in the end (in my opinion), the only thing that really works is your own palate. She describes her work as “a touch of familiar, a touch of fantasy, and a touch of fun.” A native of the northern European country of Latvia, Peeples-Bright fled from a Russian invasion with her family into Germany in 1945. After spending time in refugee camps, the family eventually made their way to the U.S. by obtaining a sponsor – an Orangevale gentleman farmer. Peeples-Bright, along with her mother and father, worked on the farm for a year to pay the debt. They thrived here in northern California and decided to make the area their new home. Even though Peeples-Bright’s family wanted her to pursue a career in mathematics as her father had, art became her life’s path. She attended UC Davis and first enrolled in the mathematics

nternationally known artist Maija Peeples-Bright has a deep passion for all kinds of art, animals, nature, color and most of all, having fun. In The Spirit of Woofdom – a documentary telling the story of Peeples-Bright’s life and art – each of these elements are intertwined and celebrated in magnificent fashion. Playful and colorful animals, or “beasties” as she refers to them, populate all of her pieces, illustrating the joy in life and art. Animals of the “woof world” have been a part of Peeples-Bright’s portfolio since the ‘60s and continue to appear in her work. Her 2005 series of mixed-

program, but soon changed her mind. With encouragement and guidance from UC Davis’ art professors, such as Wayne Thiebaud and William T. Wiley, her unique talent flourished. “Mathematics helped as a logical thinking tool,” Peeples-Bright explains. “However, art was the most wonderful thing I ever experienced, so I changed my major.” After visiting Peeples-Bright at her new home and huge Rocklin studio, it’s clear that her artistic passion has not wavered. And inside her haven, it’s not only her own art, but a myriad of works by others that shows just how much she is inspired by creativity. Art is everywhere – nearly every inch of wall space and other surfaces are filled with wonderful pieces; even Peeples-Bright herself is covered. The day I visited she wore a blouse and shoes covered in illustrations of fantastic and colorful animals, which she herself painted on the fabrics. “Art should be everywhere,” Peeples-Bright says. “Art, like music, should touch your soul.” Her work has been on display at local museums, such as Roseville’s Blue Line Gallery, and is on permanent display both nationally and internationally at several museums including Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum. In addition, her art is featured in many permanent public and private collections around the world. Peeples-Bright is currently busy at work on her new series of night scenes featuring the intriguing animals that come out after dark; the first of Nocturnes is a depiction of an aye-aye lemur (a native of Madagascar) at Yosemite’s Bridalveil Fall.

Mrs. Chim’s Class – entertaining yet informative Web-based puppet shows – tackles hot-button social issues like racism and intolerance, while Project Me – a peer-run project by teens for teens – generates a positive social culture that helps to temper the power of common negative influences. The volunteer Youth Advisory Committee, led by youth directors and comprised of middle- and high-school students, was formed to help participants develop leadership skills while serving their community. Parents, meanwhile, have access to a 24-hour support hotline as well as to Sacramento County Court-approved parenting and co-parenting courses. And everyone benefits from the organization’s interactive bullying education and advocacy program. Its strong network of resources includes Bully Busters, which teaches kids to identify harassing behaviors in order for them to sidestep a potential situation in which they might be targeted and tormented. Related seminars discussing social hierarchies, structures and power struggles are also conducted. When necessary, a bullying advocate is assigned to discuss a bullying situation with parents and children, while serving as a liaison for both at the school level.

love shines When Bad Times Bring Good Moments by Lance Hahn

s a pastor, I see people experience all types of hardships. I see pain on just about every level. At the same time, however, I see the amazing way adversity and pain bring out love from those around us. I can’t recount how many funerals I’ve seen that lead to reconciliation of an estranged family, or the number of encouraging cards – packed with pounds of love – I’ve been privy to for people in the hospital; I don’t even pretend to know the power-packed emotions a one-on-one visit with someone wrestling through life brings. I’m certainly not saying bad times are good. In fact, they are called bad times because they are, well, bad. What I’m saying is that along with the bad, an opportunity arises for love to fill the gap and show us something we didn’t really know, or perhaps didn’t feel, before. with my wife and girls from a long day of boating in the hot sun. I had waterskied for the first time this season and could anticipate all the muscles that would soon start to ache. I felt drained and tired, so I took three-anticipatory Ibuprofen – already on the counter – and headed to bed at the early time of 9 p.m. As I crawled in, next to my dog-tired wife, she asked me a peculiar question: “Why did you just take sleeping pills?” “I didn’t. I took Ibuprofen, the blue gel caps.” “The ones on the counter?” “Yeah.” “Honey, those were extra-strength sleeping pills. They had spilled out in the drawer, and I had gathered them up and put them on the counter to put back in the bottle tomorrow morning.” Needless to say, I was concerned and called Poison Control. I told them

what had happened – how the normal dosage was one maximum and I took three. “That’s a lot... you have someone there to watch you right? ” they asked. “Yes, why?” I replied. “Because although it’s not technically an overdose, if you go to sleep during the peak period, you could stop breathing.” Let m e cut to th e chase. I prayed a lot, and physically I was fine. Unfortunately, it served as a massive trigger to my panic disorder, which raged for an hour and a half; I couldn’t even focus to have a conversation. In fact, I could very well chalk up that night to my worst in recent memory. So, what was good a b o ut it? We ll , eve n th o u g h my wife was initially more tired than I was, she stayed up to keep me safe and help me through the panic attack – playing games of Uno with me and challenging me to head-to-head solitaire matches on our iPhones. She prayed for me. She tried to talk to me. She demonstrated more unselfish love through that situation than she would’ve been able to do in an entire month of things going great. My pain allowed her love to shine. I woke up the next morning rather groggy to the face of my youngest girl staring at me with a sweet smile. “Good morning, Daddy,” she said. I mumbled, “Good morning,” but before I could roll over to get back to sleep, she sweetly added, “What did we learn last night? To read the label.”

ou never get a second chance to make a first impression, but within seconds of entering Zócalo, I was smitten. Floor to ceiling, the 4,500-square-foot airy space, fashioned by designer Ernesto Cruz, is brimming with authentic and artistic furnishings, from seven-foot hand-carved columns to chandeliers reminiscent of agave plants. Black and white fixtures, brick walls and splashes of scarlet are punctuated by lush palm trees and artwork created by Cruz; the overall vibe is contemporary yet comfortable. On a recent visit, the balmy autumn air beckoned me to dine on the spacious outdoor patio. As mariachi music set the mood, a blackberry margarita and warm,

Zócalo In a League of Their Own by Megan Wiskus just-fried chips served alongside salsa and creamy black bean dip piqued my palate for what was to come. Among the enticing entrée options, which include everything from chile rellenos and sopas to empanadas and ensaladas, I enjoyed the Cochinita Pibil and Mole Enchiladas. Served three up and stuffed with cheese and braised chicken, then topped with a 26-ingredient (toasted nuts, chocolate, chile and dried fruits, to name a few) mole sauce and zigzag of crema, the enchiladas were a savory circus of tastes and textures. The Cochinita Pibil – pork shoulder rubbed and glazed with achiote, wrapped

in banana leaves, and cooked until fall-apart tender – was succulent and slightly sweet with subtle hints of woodsy smoke. When assembled with the homemade corn tortillas and accompanying pickled red onions and habanero salsa, my taste buds raced into overdrive. Familystyle sides of cilantro lime rice and black beans were spot-on. For dessert, the Tres Leche Cake is worth dipping your spoon into. Served in a Mason jar, the dense vanilla cake soaked in “three milks” and garnished with whipped cream and strawberries was sinfully satisfying. It’s no wonder everyone’s going loco for Zócalo – the regional Mexican cuisine, tequila selection and well-versed wait staff are in a league of their own.

taste Grilled Marinated Chicken Brochettes Morocco: A Culinary Journey with Recipes from the SpiceScented Markets of Marrakech to the Date-Filled Oasis of Zagora by Jeff Koehler (Chronicle Books, 2012, $29.95) Like Grilled Spicy Kefta Brochettes, these are a favorite throughout Morocco, referred to as snacks in street stalls and in simple cafes. They’re inexpensive, flavorful and quick to prepare. The chicken takes on a lovely golden hue from the cumin and sweet paprika. Calculate about four brochettes per person as part of a meal, accompanied by a few salads and plenty of bread.

In a large mixing bowl, add the cilantro, cumin, paprika and cayenne pepper. Generously season with salt and pepper. Moisten with the oil and blend well. Add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover, refrigerate and marinate for 1 hour, turning occasionally. Prepare skewers with 6-8 cubes of chicken on each. The pieces should be just touching, not squashed tightly together. If using a grill pan, skillet or griddle, heat over mediumhigh heat. If using a barbecue, prepare a fire and heat until the coals are glowing. If using a broiler, preheat the broiler. Cook the brochettes, nudging them from time to time with the help of a spatula in order to cook evenly on all sides, until the meat is cooked through and firm to touch, 4-5 minutes. Serve hot. dinner date Food and Wine for the Season 2011 MASON SAUVIGNON BLANC Randy Mason has been producing wine for more than 30 years (the first Mason wine was produced in 1993) and is known in the industry as a pioneer for producing some of the best California Sauvignon Blancs on the market. It was Mason’s vision to produce a high-quality wine and make it available at a fair market price. The fruit for this year’s Sauvignon Blanc came solely from a vineyard called Blockhouse – located in Yountville – which in itself is special and unusual, since typically grapes for Sauvignon Blancs at this price point (approximately $16 bottle) come from various sources. The vineyard is located at the heart of the valley’s floor, which enjoys cool evenings and warm days, making for excellent grapes. 2011 Mason Sauvignon Blanc embodies a very elegant style with amazing flavors of grapefruit, melon and fresh-cut grass. Fermented in 100-percent stainless steel tanks, it has a very distinctive nose, and overall is a true Napa-style Sauvignon Blanc that’s heralded for its varietal trueness and perfect balance. Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? My passion for photography started in third grade when a school project required us to make a handmade box camera. As an older sibling and cousin, I used to have “photo shoots” with my younger family members and even the dogs – anyone who would sit still long enough. The anticipation of having my 35mm film developed was almost like waiting for Christmas morning. While life took me on another adventure with my husband and three kids, it came full circle on my 33rd birthday when my husband bought me my first SLR camera: a Canon Rebel XS. That Canon took me on a 365-day photo adventure, which rekindled my passion for photography. Capturing great photos feels like the easy part for me; the challenging part is the editing, color enhancements and sharpening which happens after the photo is taken. Our group of financial professionals provides comprehensive financial planning, investment management, retirement planning, tax preparation, accounting, bookkeeping and payroll services to individuals and small businesses in South Placer and Sacramento Counties. We formed the business as a strategic decision to combine our talents and experience to best help our clients. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Right out of college I worked as an account executive in the group sales department at Marriott’s Great America (now California’s Great America) theme park in Santa Clara. It was a fantastic job because I was able to learn about working in a sales environment with executives from some of the top companies all over northern California. Plus, I could ride roller coasters during my lunch break! How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I enjoy volunteer work and am heavily involved in several nonprofits, including Sons of Norway, a fraternal benefits organization. I am also on the board of my church and have served as president of the Kiwanis Club. If you could be any other profession, what would it be? Without a doubt I would be a teacher. As it is now, about 50 percent of what I do is helping my clients understand the financial world. I think I would have been a pretty good high school history or maybe math teacher. I love making kids think and laugh; not necessarily in that order though. And finally, customer service is…? Listening to my clients’ needs, questions, goals and dreams and providing them with choices and guidance that exceeds what they’ve seen or heard in the past. Then I keep in touch with them – hopefully more frequently than they expect – and return phone calls and emails within the same day. Did I mention listening?

Said the other, “I like to start with a scowl.” “I whip out my claws.” “I snap with my jaws.” And they agreed one always should growl. One monster stood up on his hind legs, To show how he towered overhead. Broad-shouldered and tall, Green scales and all, He was good at bringing the dread.

The first beast then flicked out his long tongue; Like a towel it snapped through the room. Disgusting and slimy, And a little bit grimy, It left the walls all covered in goo. The second narrowed his one eye, Which sat like a jewel on his forehead. Then focusing in, That horrible lens Shot lightning that blew up a bed. While the smoke cleared away they cackled, And rolled on the floor with delight. Their throaty guffaws

And pounding of paws, Jangled the stars hung in the night. Then suddenly they grew quite quiet And held still, not twitching a tail. A loud knock on their door – Then three knocks once more. Was it a monster hunter, hot on their trail? No, it was something considerably less scary. To them, anyway – but not you or me. Because every grown monster Once was a youngster, And these two were still little, you see. The ruckus they made was disturbing Their parents one floor below; With the thuds and the laughing, And the booms and the cackling, It was ruining Dad’s favorite TV show.
