Have you ever won an award? Chances are, if you have, the announcement made you feel on top of the world, if even for a fleeting moment, and is something you haven’t forgotten. Though my list of laurels may not be terribly long or impressive (no Nobel Peace Prize...yet) and I’ve definitely been the underdog more than the top dog, each award reminds me that hard work does in fact pay off. From a first-place finish at a Knights of Columbus free throw contest and a victorious report I wrote about sea turtles, to taking top honors at a dance competition in Australia and being bestowed with a M.U.G. Award while working at Starbucks (true story: I caught a customer red-handed using counterfeit coupons), I’ll always hold these accolades near and dear. In this month’s issue, we present our annual “Readers’ Choice Awards,” starting on page 35, where we announce the best of the region in categories that run the gamut from eats and drinks, “The harder to arts, culture, health, wellness and everything you work for in between. To all the something, the winners—congrats—the greater you’ll feel community voted for you, when you achieve your product or service, it.” —Unknown and believes that you’re the cream of the crop. I hope you don’t take the honor lightly, either— please, pop the bubbly, post your win on social media, and revel in all its glory! And for those new to the area, or longtime residents seeking a spot to workout, place to dine or automotive expert, the feature is a wonderful way to discover something new (after all, these people and places won for a reason) and overall guide to the locale we call home. I know I’m already making a list of businesses to check out and professionals to call based on our readers’ recommendations—and I hope you do the same. There’s much more in store, too. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we highlight local ways to bring attention to and raise funds about the disease in The 10 Spot (page 14). Whether you know someone currently fighting, have lost a loved one to the battle, or simply want to step up and show your support, there’s an opportunity for all. October 7 also marks Style’s signature event, Folsom Family Expo—a free celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Folsom Community Center that includes interactive exhibits from the Sacramento Children’s Museum, bounce houses, live entertainment, over 100 local vendors, “Healthy Folsom” (health and wellness demonstrations, discussions and activities), free Folsom Zoo admission and train rides (with ticket obtained at the expo) and more. It’s a perfect way to spend a Saturday and connect to your community; plus, you never know, you too could come away a winner (at the all-day raffle). See you there! — Megan megan@stylemg.com

What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever worn? In the late ’80s, my husband and I dressed up as ZZ Top. We had the beards, the big coats and the guitars, and we had recorders in our pockets playing ZZ Top songs on a loop. We never spoke, and no one had a clue who we were. —Debra Linn
Queen Amidala. My dad even helped me with my makeup.—Sabrina Gonzalez
I dressed up as Miss Universe one year—I think I might have been seven at the time—and it was amazing. I made my crown from aluminum foil and beads, and even crafted my “Miss Universe” sash and evening gown. I also did my own hair and makeup. It was just the start of my highmaintenance beauty routine for years to come.—Wendy Sipple
NOT YOUR AVERAGE TAKE-OUT
Definitely the Rubik’s Cube outfit that my mom made for me out of a cardboard box. She just cut out the head and arm holes and painted on the colors!—Kerrie L. Kelly
I dressed up as Chewbacca last year, and the mask even roared when I opened my mouth.—Aaron Roseli
I got a little excited about my new Gumby costume and tried it on— in addition to having several cocktails—long before the party. This led to a prolonged nap in a sweaty costume. Always the trooper, Hungover Gumby rebounded and made his Halloween debut.—Lorn Randall

lacerGROWN CEO Carol Arnold grew up hearing stories about farm life from her parents, both of whom spent time working on farms in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Although raised in the Sacramento area, Arnold never lost her appreciation for a rural way of life, especially when it came to locally grown and produced food. She’s an avid home cook, and she and her husband, Ed, have traveled the world (often with their two adult children), taste-testing all along the way. When the opportunity arose to get involved at PlacerGROWN, a nonprofit that advocates for local food producers and connects them to their community, Arnold jumped at the chance. “I rediscovered this deep, abiding love

for farmers I didn’t know was inside me,” she shares. She also gained a deeper appreciation for how challenging farming and ranching can be. “There are a lot of things that have to work together to produce food supply,” she explains. “Things that can make crops fail are so numerous—weather at the wrong time, wind and rain. Farming is backbreaking work.” October is PlacerGROWN Month, and there will be numerous events and activities designed to raise awareness about locally grown food (visit placergrown.org for more information). Arnold also has plans in the works for a “mobile food facility” (a certified food truck) that will bring food made from locally sourced ingredients to schools and area businesses. She also continues to spread

MANDARINS
NUTRITION // Ma ndar i n season is almost here, and— while much of the country only knows them in canned form—we have the real deal right in our backyard. These citrus gems have a unique property to help you get through cold and flu season. Owari satsuma, the variety grown in Placer County, have a very high concentration of the phytochemical synephrine, which is a natural decongestant. A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2008 found they had synephrine concentrations up to six times higher than values previously documented in orange juice. According to the study, 10 ounces of mandarin juice contain as much synephrine as one over-the-counter decongestant pill. Along with vitamins A and C, calcium and iron, mandarins are a healthful snack choice for all ages; and they taste delicious, too! ASK THE Expert
Is wine dryness or sweetness due to grape variety?
The simple answer is no. All grape varieties increase in sugar and sweetness level as they ripen. Yeast convert juice sugars into alcohol through fermentation. In most wines, there’s zero sugar after fermentation, and we call it “dry.” In some styles, fermentation is stopped before completion, leaving “residual sugar.” These wines, in increasing level of residual sweetness, are called “off-dry,” “semisweet” and “sweet.” Confusion arises because traditional styles of
14
stylergbr.com // OCTOBER 2017 //
sweet wines are commonly associated with specific grape varieties. For example, Muscat is frequently made in a sweet style. If Muscat is fermented to completion, it will be dry, but since it’s commonly made in a sweet style, many people assume the grape must be sweet. Another common confusion is linguistic, since there are two meanings for “dry wine.” The more common meaning is "not sweet," which, as clarified above, has no relation to grape variety; the second

Some grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon have a high level of tannins, which create astringency, and so these varieties are more likely to be “dry” in this sense. O
Unearthly Beauty
riginally from Southern California, Don Antram found his way to Placer County in 1985, where he raised two children alongside his wife,
Teri, and started a business: Faux Finishes and Murals. The artist now divides his time between the business and creating mixed media paintings that incorporate various materials to capture and reflect light. “I want viewers to feel a reaction, to be touched by the beauty of the art,” Antram shares. “I want them to feel the need to come close and inspect what I’ve put on the canvas; I want them to want to touch it!” You can view Antram’s work at the San Carlos Art and Wine Faire (October 7-8), the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival (October 14-15), as well as the Sacramento Arts Festival (November 3-5). HLB: WHAT’S YOUR ARTISTIC BACKGROUND? DA: In fourth grade, my art was chosen to be displayed at back-to-school night, which was exciting and encouraging; in seventh grade, I took my first oil painting class through adult education, and continued taking art classes through high school and junior college, [eventually getting] my B.A. from Long Beach State. In 2008, a good friend encouraged me to take classes from Sondra Hersh, an amazing artist in Auburn. Until then, I painted mechanically; her teachings opened me up artistically, emotionally and spiritually. I now have passion for my work and feel like I’m growing as an artist. HLB: WHAT DRAWS YOU TO YOUR PARTICULAR MEDIUM? DA: After being introduced to the wonders of mixed media, I couldn’t seem to get enough of it. Between the molding paste, [which] provides endless ways to provide texture and depth, to the subject, there are limitless ways to embellish my pieces. I mostly use broken glass, shells, beads, special rocks, glitter and foils. I also make shavings from mica to use as scales on my mermaids and fish; these—along with metallic paint—capture and reflect light. HLB: WHEN DID YOU FIRST FEEL COMFORTABLE SHOWING YOUR WORK? DA: Shortly after I started my business. I had lots of positive feedback from clients and kept busy with both [that] and commissioned canvas art, but it wasn’t until 2010—after I started creating art passionately—when I started finding ways to show and sell it. HLB: WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE? DA: The beauty God has provided us. I don’t limit myself to one subject, and most of my series are inspired from customer requests. I find peace, contentment, joy and calmness when I’m in my studio, and there’s no place I’d rather be than there—drinking wine and creating art!
artbeat
HLB: WHY IS ART SO IMPORTANT? DA: I feel art is important to everyone, even those who aren’t collectors. It has a way of touching our hearts and our minds. A piece of art can trigger feelings, emotions and memories, and has the power to inspire, to heal, and even to motivate us. All art communicates something; the joy of an artist is to provide that connection. fineartbydon.com

In Good Taste
5 Food Fallacies
by KOURTNEY JASON
Advice about healthy eating is all around us, but how sage is this wisdom? Is there a kernel of truth or is it all just hearsay? Here, local dietitians debunk common food myths to help you separate fact from fiction.
1
Myth: Eggs are bad for your heart.
2
Myth: All carbs are evil.
Truth: The fact is that what causes us to get fat is simply eating more calories than the body can burn, Steeples says. “One of the reasons carbs have a reputation of being ‘bad’ for us is that they’re often the major component of foods we find easy to overeat, like pasta, bread, tortillas, crackers, sweetened cereals, cookies, cakes and pastries,” she says. “But don’t confuse the role of whole-food carbs—like those from vegetables, fruits,

Myth: Low-fat is healthier than full-fat.
Truth: Nutrition is not one-sizefits-all, explains Chelsea Britton, RD, who’s on the Diabetes Nutrition and Education team at Marshall Medical Center. “Science does support limiting saturated fats and

Truth: Eggs are a very nutritious food—“they’re a good source of iron, zinc and also choline, which is important in a number of metabolic functions,” says Melody Steeples, MPH, RD, from Woodland Clinic Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation. As for their impact on your heart health? It’s outdated advice. Blood cholesterol levels are influenced much more by genetics than by diet. “Because of this, more recent government advice does not set limits for dietary cholesterol nor egg consumption,” she says.

trans fats,” she says. “Most fats are a blend of different kinds of fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats—our body does not make them, so they’re essential to our bodies, [and] we need to eat regular sources. Ground flaxseed, chia [and] hemp seeds are highest, then fatty fish like salmon, herring and sardines, as well as greens. Many of my patients test for a high need of essential fats, and would benefit from increasing their olive, avocado and oil intake.”

Myth: Frozen/canned fruits and vegetables aren’t as nutritious as fresh.
Truth: Lucky for busy people, all fruits and vegetables have value—no matter how they're processed. “In fact, frozen produce often has more nutrients than fresh, since it’s picked at the peak of ripeness and then frozen quickly to retain the high nutrient value,” says Kirsten Ransbury, MS, RD, CDE, lead

registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Roseville. “Freezing has negligible effects on nutrients and can effectively preserve produce, so it can usually last at least six-to-nine months.” Canned vegetables also offer an advantage when there’s limited refrigeration. Though vegetables are often higher in sodium, reduced sodium varieties are available, and canned fruits aren’t usually high in sodium, she says.

Myth: Microwaving zaps nutrients from food.
Truth: The best cooking method for retaining nutrients is one that cooks quickly and preserves the integrity of the food. Microwaving is convenient, heats food for a short time, and uses little to no liquid. “Microwaving steams food from the inside out and keeps in more vitamins and minerals,” says Ann Wallace, RD, CDE, registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Roseville, adding that “it’s important to use microwave-safe glass, ceramic or plastic, as not all containers or wraps are safe for use in the microwave. Never reuse disposable plastic containers, like old margarine tubs, since some particles from the plastic may enter the food and not be safe to consume.” FOR EVEN MORE HEALTH MYTHS, VISIT STYLERGBR.COM

T

change their lives. Grayson is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Golden Sierra Life Skills, an Auburn-based organization that helps men learn parenting and coparenting skills and anger management. parenting role. The term “new fathers” is a big bucket—from dads of newborns and fathers in new blended families, to grandparents raising grandkids and dads who need a refresher for a child born after a gap. “There are many parenting classes for women,” Grayson says. “We basically offer the other side of the coin.” What Grayson terms “broken heart” is the emptiness felt by men who never had a father or father figure in their lives. When these men are called to step up as dads, they must work through
their neglect issues at the same time they’re learning to parent. “But they’re good men,” Grayson emphasizes. Golden Sierra’s core program is its 10week “Men, Infants and Children” class, or MIC. The series of weekly discussions begins by regressing the fathers to their childhoods to discover and address the roots of their own parenting styles. “We ask what it’s like to be a real man, then ask what it’s like to be a father,” Grayson says. “Usually the two lists don’t match.” With their lists, the men understand what they need to work on. The full course covers a long list of topics, including positive discipline, child health and safety, conflict resolution, parenting skills, domestic violence, communication skills, brain development and more. The program has been so successful that the men who complete it—nearly 3,000 to date—often come back to help facilitate later classes. The full course costs $250. “We want the dads to pay something,” Grayson says, “but “we don’t turn anybody away.” Golden Sierra also offers a 10-week “Anger Management” class and a “Male Involvement/Male Ambassador” program to help fathers participate in their child’s education, particularly in STEM fields. For divorced couples, the center holds co-parenting classes that the men progress to after the MIC program. “Often the mother didn’t have a father figure, either,” Grayson says, “and she has no idea how a father should behave, [which] leads to toxic parenting.” This class ensures they become a team. Grayson, who has worked in the life skills field for 16 years, also consults on fatherhood issues and speaks widely about the topic. He’s even helped start similar programs across the country and received the 2013 Friends of Head Start Award for his “innovative quality programming.” Golden Sierra—which receives no funding and relies entirely on donations and fees—holds classes in Auburn and Roseville in both English and Spanish. goldenlifeskills.org photos by DANTE FONTANA

Mimi Nassif would like to thank all of her clients and friends who voted for her again as one of the Best Real Estate Agents in Roseville, Rocklin and Granite Bay in 2017. "Inspiring," "workaholic" and "passionate" are words commonly used to describe Mimi Nassif, the prime realtor of the luxury estate market, who has had listings for former Sacramento Kings player Bobby Jackson and Taro Arai (the incredible sushi chef and owner of Mikuni), along with several other luxury estates throughout Placer, Sacramento and El Dorado Counties. Mimi has taken the luxury market to new heights and received several awards, including Top Producer at Keller Williams, Million Dollar Guild Recognition by the institution of Luxury Home Marketing, and being voted #1 Best Real Estate Agent by Style Magazine readers in 2013-2016. She was invited by Gary Keller, founder of Keller Williams, to speak in front of over 15,000 people about her success and passion for real estate. She's also been inducted into the Placer County Masters Club and become not only a Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, but was also recognized for being one of the top producers by the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing. Mimi is one of the more prolific advertisers in the industry, she markets her listings locally and globally, and knows that most of the luxury listings in the area are selling to Bay Area cash buyers (therefore marketing intensively to them) and that 35% of real estate transactions in the U.S. are selling to international buyers (thus her focus on global marketing). Her key to customer satisfaction and success is the positive attitude and tireless energy she brings to every client with whom she works. Along with her dedication and commitment to provide the highest quality of service. She delivers both results AND an enjoyable experience. Mimi has multiple degrees in business marketing, fashion design, interior design and Real Estate broker. She pursued her career in real estate after finding out that her husband of eight years at the time, Dr. Firas Nassif, was diagnosed with acute leukemia and given only a few weeks to live. Her faith in God, the huge support from family and friends, along with the knowledge that her husband was a fighter, helped with his recovery process. Now, eight years later, Dr. Nassif is cancer-free, enjoying life, a challenging career and a successful dental practice— all while raising their three beautiful children. Mimi is so grateful for all of her blessings and the success she has received in her real estate practice, along with the opportunity to give back to the community that has helped her in her career. She finds balance in life by donating her free time to non-profit organizations and a portion of her income to local charities and churches. Good things come to those who focus on the positive in life and take action, so when it comes to your next move—whether buying or selling - give Mimi a call. you can count on her to deliver exceptional results.

Our team of primary care doctors provides expertise in a wide range of health needs including pediatrics, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety, depression, performance optimization, chronic disease, pain management, detoxification, women’s health, menopause, sports injury, aesthetics and weight loss. Revolutions Naturopathic is a family clinic that combines the latest in natural medical research and technology with the wisdom of Mom’s home remedies. We are happy to announce that we just opened our 2nd location in Roseville. Soho Sushi and Teppanyaki Hottest Plates in Town by LORN RANDALL // photos by DANTE FONTANA
I
WHILE THE CHEF PREPARED OUR VEGETABLE SIDES OF ZUCCHINI, MUSHROOMS AND ONIONS, HE CONTINUED TO DAZZLE WITH FIRE, STROBE LIGHTS AND A FLAMING ONION VOLCANO.
consider myself to have better-than–average knife skills for a home cook. I know this because my diced carrots and onions rarely include a fingernail or a julienne of knuckle. But the Iron Chef fantasies abruptly cease when I watch a seasoned professional ply his or her trade. And when that professional is whirling knives and shimmering, pointed meat forks over a superheated flaming surface, it’s a signal to sit back and enjoy the show. Such was the case on my visit to Soho Sushi and Teppanyaki in Roseville. I started with the scallop shooter appetizer—tender bay scallops marinating in a martini glass with ponzu, ginger, scallions, sake and sriracha. For some at our table, it seemed a bit…unconventional, but I could have had three more and called the night a success. Fortunately, I sojourned in place for the show. Enter the Dragon (I asked our chef his name, and he dropped the “Dragon” nom de plume on me), who let his skills out of the fire on full display for our table of mesmerized spectators; first slicing and dicing his way through the grilled shrimp starter, which was included with our orders. He then proceeded immediately onto the chicken fried rice with egg, in which the egg performed tricks at the skilled hands of the Dragon. Everyone was given two bowls containing “yum yum sauce”—a mayonnaise-based condiment—and, my favorite: ginger sauce (you can Google both to make at home). The shrimp and rice were seasoned equally HOURS: 1-9 p.m. (Sunday), 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-9 well and cooked spot on. p.m. (Monday-Thursday), 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and 4-10 While the chef prepared our vegetable sides of p.m. (Friday), 11:30 a.m.-10 zucchini, mushrooms and onions, he continued to p.m. (Saturday) dazzle with fire, strobe lights and a flaming onion TRY THIS: Rice Balls, SOHO volcano. I mean, who doesn’t like an alcoholRoll, Melting Albacore, Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box, induced open flame with dinner, right? Steak & Lobster Hibachi, Our entrées started with the steak and lobster Seafoodon, Banango hibachi. Seared to medium rare and topped with ALCOHOL: Beer and wine/ sizzling garlic butter, the filet mignon was meltsake in-my-mouth tender. The lobster—dipped in the TAB: $$ aforementioned ginger sauce—was rich, slightly sweet and flavorful. We also tried the Seafoodon HEADS-UP: Reservations recommended for (and, no, that’s not a typo). Calamari steak, shrimp teppanyaki; lunch specials and scallops were seared on the flat top with available; extensive sushi menu with party trays for asparagus and other vegetables, then tossed 3-4, 5-6 or 7-9 people; kids’ with udon noodles and served in a medium spicy hibachi menu available; rice bowls (served with steamed sauce—a seafood lover’s delight for sure. rice, broccoli, carrots, green cabbage, and your choice of As we relaxed and reveled in the show (and our protein) are served at lunch table full of food), I came to the conclusion that Soho is definitely better than so-so. BAD Bakers // BAD (Bread and Donuts) Bakers in Roseville lures passersby with the scent of freshly baked Spanish bread and the promise
of gourmet donuts of every type and flavor. It’s a place that tests your willpower and sugar limits. Should I go for a donut with sprinkles or marshmallows? Popcorn or potato chips? Maple or sugar? So many questions, so many more answers…After careful consideration and an embarrassing amount of drooling, I decided on a four-piece variety box containing a Plain Jane Powdered Sugar Donut (nothing plain about this Jane), a Couch Potato Kronut (potato chips and chocolate make total sense on a donut; trust me), a Shorty Cake Raised Donut with a Bavarian Cream Shot (deep-fried strawberry shortcake treat with a syringe of luscious cream filling) and The B.O.C. Cake Donut (Breakfast of Champions, indeed). “You have to try their Spanish bread, too” insisted the lady behind me. I obliged, and all I can say is this: I dare you to NOT be madly, passionately in love with these soft, fluffy clouds of dough. They’re like sweet manna from heaven. From the bright interior and chirpy service, to the high quality of their products, and fun, cream-filled syringes, this place is a must-try for anyone with a sweet or savory tooth (they even have empanadas and hot dog kolaches)—so basically, everyone. On the whole, my BAD Bakers experience was an exceptionally good one, and I made sure to leave a trail of crumbs leading from the bakery to my house; you know…for when I wander too far and need to find my way back. “I like to think of myself as a cake connoisseur, and the moist, sinfully delicious offerings at Nothing Bundt Cakes pass my palate’s test with flying colors every time. I’ll often bring one of the Tiered Bundt Cakes to Thanksgiving, birthday or Christmas celebrations, and it always receives rave reviews. Favorite flavors include carrot, pecan praline and lemon, but you really can’t go wrong with any!” nothingbundtcakes.com/bakery/ ca/roseville
“The Cherry Hand Pies from Whole Foods Market are my nemesis. Seriously—whenever I step foot inside, there’s a magnetic attraction that takes me to them, and I have to buy them. They’re my secret vice.” wholefoodsmarket.com/ stores/roseville
“I never pass on chocolate…except when I’m at La Provence. Their Crème Brûlée is delish! The classic French dessert proves that when it comes to ingredients, sometimes less is more. Break through the crackly, caramelized top into the custardy, just-sweet-enough delight— often made using only eggs, cream, vanilla, sugar and a pinch of salt—and say hello to your new favorite dessert.” laprovenceroseville.com
“Trust me: The Chocolate Lava Cake from Land Ocean is worth saving room for. The warm and gooey chocolate ganache center, slightly melted vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, and addition of crushed Heath bar is what sweet dreams are made of.” landoceanrestaurants.com
“Tiramisu should be light and flavorful—a dessert that you want to take small bites of and savor. Some close friends from New Jersey (where delizioso Italian food can be found on every corner) were recently visiting and tried Visconti’s tiramisu for the first time. They took bites at the same time and— as if choreographed—fell back in their seats and proclaimed, ‘This is the best I’ve ever had!’ Yes, it’s that good.” viscontisristorante. com
“The Hot S’more Brownie at 36 Handles puts my campfire creations to shame. It features a chocolate chip brownie, chocolate sauce, house-made marshmallow fluff that’s toasted, and is served warm with shards of graham cracker. Definitely a winner any time of year!” 36handles.com

Edna Valley Pinot Noir ABV: 14.3% OVERALL RATING: 5 TASTING NOTES: Smooth and silky in texture with an earthy character and slight tartness on the finish; fruit-forward with notes of plum, pomegranate, cherry and blackberry; solid on its own, but would pair nicely with a variety of dishes PRICE: $14.29 PURCHASE: Total Wine and More OVERALL RATING is the average score (out of 5) compiled by Style staff tasters. PAIRS WITH... CLAIMSTAKE BREWING COMPANY’S LADY LIBERTY SAISON ABV: 6.3% IBU: 55
Rancho Cordova’s Claimstake Brewing Co. has only been open for a little over a year and a half, but they already garnered an award at the 2017 California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition and were named “Best Brewpub” in the 2017 Sacramento A-List. With a constantly changing, extremely versatile tap list that’s created based on what customers’ want, they have a beer for any palate—from a black coffee lager (“Silent Shawn”) to a session hazy IPA brewed with pineapple (“Shawnalulu”). Their Lady Liberty Saison—dry-hopped on the Fourth of July—features warm spice notes, a juicy explosion of grapefruit, and a mellow hop flavor that sets off the sweetness in dishes like this month’s Apple Hill Cake. With an ABV slightly higher than average, it’s a perfect beer to crack open at the end of a meal. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
Connected Technology was created to take simple, out-of-the-box solutions and use them to build elegant, adaptable solutions to increase safety, convenience and quality of life while saving customers money through energy efficiency. We’ve always enjoyed using technology to solve solutions in many environments, and providing direct-toconsumer assistance in the smart home market is very satisfying for our employees and customers.
Massage Heights is a massage and facial therapeutic spa. We were looking for a break from corporate America—something that could make a difference in the lives of our customers—and the retreat in Roseville was available.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer? Our favorite customers are seniors, since home automation provides this population with the greatest benefit, even though they may be the most unsure about technology. After a little education, they can see the personal benefits and enjoy these solutions greatly, as their quality of life, safety and security improves. Imagine leaving your home and having the doors lock, garage door close, lights turn off, thermostat change temperature and alarm activate—all automatically without any action on your part. These are simple solutions from Connected Technology. We also support the community by helping the Mustard Seed School and Christian Youth Theater, among other local volunteer services.
What’s your biggest job perk? Watching the quality of life increase for the customers who use our services. Enhancing another person’s life is very satisfying and makes us want to do it more.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Our favorite restaurant for a nice evening or a date is Via Roma Pizzeria. When we want to go as a family, or are just looking for something casual, then Rudy's Gourmet Mexican is the place; it has exceptional food at a great value.
And finally, customer service is…? The heart of customer service is listening. Truly understanding the needs of the customer, and assisting the customer to meet those needs, is what good customer service is all about.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer? Our customers come to us for a number of different reasons—to get away and have a relaxing afternoon, to help deal with chronic pain, help heal after certain surgeries or medical procedures, as an adjunct to chiropractic work, and sports therapy for athletes. This cross section keeps us engaged with local doctors and chiropractors, local gyms and fitness centers, and other business owners and leaders. We’re also talking with retirement facilities, since massage can be used to promote better circulation and increase range of motion and energy in older adults.
Why is your staff the best in the business? Most therapists go to school to make a difference, but too many end up at a facility or spa that focuses on one type of massage customer. Massage Heights is focused on understanding our customers’ overall health needs and in putting together a focused program that will get them to a new level of well-being. One massage feels good for a day or two; a Massage Heights program and the skill of our therapists brings continued improvement and—over time (often in a short time)—a new sustainable level of energy and flexibility, along with decreased levels of pain, headaches, fatigue and depression.
Where do you go when the going gets tough? Camping.
What’s your biggest job perk? The best feeling is being at our retreat when the staff is clicking and the lobby is full of customers. We honestly have the best customers around. They’re engaging and fun, and it’s a perk to know they truly feel better because they’ve spent time with us.
DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?
In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

of you, we were big fans, and we’re going to miss his creativity, his sense of humor, his obvious love of community, his family and, of course, his duck. Tom, we were both fortunate and honored to have you write for us—thank you! We look forward to your continued contributions in the magazine whenever possible. So, what do we do now? Well, we have thought about this long and hard, and we have a plan—and yes, it’s a good one! But more about that later. As you know, we reside in what’s being called one of the very best spots to live and raise a family in the U.S. Our quality of life is outstanding, and our weather is close to being the best in California (the best being WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? just a little more than 500 miles south on Don’t miss Style’s feature “Cool Beans: the coast). Now, we don’t know about you, A Local Coffee but if someone asked us, “What’s the one Crawl.” thing that stands out in your area—what does this area have to offer that other

places do not?” Well, we could tell them what a wonderful melting pot this region is—with its myriad of nationalities and cultures. Or we could mention the great shopping all around us. We could say our wonderful geography, with quick access to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and two world-class wine regions. But honestly, it’s going to be a little, or a lot, different for each of us, and that’s where YOU come in. We want our readers to get involved in a fun and easy way. Most of us have smartphones, with pretty good cameras, and if not we likely have a digital camera. We want you to be the photographer, and what we’re requesting from you is simple and fun. It’s called “Where We Live,” and the concept is this: Send us a photo of anything local—a tree, kids playing, a pet, the golf course, your family outing to Apple Hill, a favorite cocktail—you name it, you art direct it, and tell us why, in 20 words or less, this is the photo that says it all for you. Every month, we’ll pick our favorite, and use it in the magazine (along with others on our website). What’s more, each month’s featured photographer will win a gift certificate to a local business.
All submissions should be emailed to info@stylemg.com. Ready, get set—GO!

From start to finish [Dr. Almonte] was very kind and efficient, his staff is great and overall it was a good experience for me. A week following my surgery I had a question and he answered me back promptly. I will refer him to anyone else who is interested in having a lift.I look completely natural and someone who hasn’t seen me in a while comments on how refreshed I look!
