Laura L. Machado, MD, FACS, FASMBS MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Q&A WITH DR. ALMONTE WHY IS PLASTIC SURGERY SO POPULAR? I believe many of the advancements in plastic surgery have led to its gaining popularity. For middle-aged and older Americans, procedures can now be done with less anesthesia and quicker downtimes, making plastic surgery safer and less intrusive into their lifestyles. Surgeries that used to be done under general anesthesia with longer recovery periods are now being done safely and effectively under local anesthesia with short recovery periods. For the younger population and millenials, social media has been the huge driving force. Sites like Instagram and Facebook have made cosmetic procedures viewable and accessible to so many. You can literally watch surgeries live if you wanted. And when celebrities with huge numbers of followers get cosmetic procedures, it’s easy to see how strong of an influence they have in the plastic surgery market.

WHAT SETS YOU APART AS A PLASTIC SURGEON? For one, I specialize in only the face. In contrast to other plastic surgeons who work on multiple body areas, many of whom are terrific surgeons, I specialize in only one area. I believe this provides a level of focus and expertise that gives patients a sense of comfort and confidence, not only with the actual operations themselves, but with the decision-making that takes place before the operations. The second thing is I spend a great deal of time educating my patients. With all the information and promotion and marketing of plastic surgery that’s out there, it’s important for patients to find a doctor they can feel comfortable with, and have open and honest conversations with, which lead to a greater understanding of what

plastic surgery is, and how it can impact them individually. In short, patients need a doctor they can trust. And it is my highest goal to gain their confidence and trust.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT BEING A PLASTIC SURGEON? What I love most about my job is watching the transformation that takes place in my patients from procedures I’ve done for them. Seeing their beautiful and rejuvenated faces is so rewarding. But even better than that, is witnessing the confidence and self-assurance they possess now that they have their youthful vigor and appearance back. Simply put, I truly love making people happy, and I’m so blessed and humbled to be able to do that as a plastic surgeon.

From start to finish [Dr. Almonte] was very kind and efficient, his staff is great and overall it was a good experience for me. A week following my surgery I had a question and he answered me back promptly. I will refer him to anyone else who is interested in having a lift.I look completely natural and someone who hasn’t seen me in a while comments on how refreshed I look!

editor’s note

H

ave you ever won an award? Chances are, if you have, the announcement made you feel on top of the world, if even for a fleeting moment, and is something you haven’t forgotten. Though my list of laurels may not be terribly long or impressive (no Nobel Peace Prize...yet) and I’ve definitely been the underdog more than the top dog, each award reminds me that hard work does in fact pay off. From a first-place finish at a Knights of Columbus free throw contest and a victorious report I wrote about sea turtles, to taking top honors at a dance competition in Australia and being bestowed with a M.U.G. Award while working at Starbucks (true story: I caught a customer red-handed using counterfeit coupons), I’ll always hold these accolades near and dear. In this month’s issue, we present our annual “Readers’ Choice Awards,” starting on page 55, where we announce the best of the region in categories that run the gamut from eats and drinks, to arts, culture, health, wellness and everything in between. To all the winners—congrats—the community voted for you, your product or service, and believes that you’re the cream of the crop. I hope you don’t take the honor lightly, either—please, pop the bubbly, post your win on social media, and revel in all its glory! And for those new to the area, or longtime residents seeking a spot to workout, place to dine or automotive expert, the feature is a wonderful way to discover something new (after all, these people and places won for a reason) and overall guide to the locale we call home. I know I’m already making a list of businesses to check out and professionals to call based on our readers’ recommendations— and I hope you do the same. There’s much more in store, too. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we highlight local ways to bring attention to and raise funds about the disease in The 10 Spot (page 22). Whether you know someone currently fighting, have lost a loved one to the battle, or simply want to step up and show your support, there’s an opportunity for all. October 7 also marks Style’s signature event, Folsom Family —Unknown Expo—a free celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Folsom Community Center that includes interactive exhibits from the Sacramento Children’s Museum, bounce houses, live entertainment, over 100 local vendors, “Healthy Folsom” (health and wellness demonstrations, discussions and activities), free Folsom Zoo admission and train rides (with ticket obtained at the expo) and more. It’s a perfect way to spend a Saturday and connect to your community; plus, you never know, you too could come away a winner (at the all-day raffle). See you there! — Megan megan@stylemg.com

What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever worn? In the late ’80s, my husband and I dressed up as ZZ Top. We had the beards, the big coats and the guitars, and we had recorders in our pockets playing ZZ Top songs on a loop. We never spoke, and no one had a clue who we were. —Debra Linn

ask the experts How long will it take my child to learn how to swim? Many variables affect how rapidly a student will learn how to swim, such as age, comfort level in the water, whether they’re in a group or a private lesson, and whether they have been or will be exposed to a traumatic water event. It’s important to remember that every student is different and follows a different learning curve. Once a student starts the process of learning to swim, consistency is key. Swimming more than one day per week, especially in the early developmental stages, will result in faster progress and lead to a student learning how to swim sooner. The more practice a student has, the faster they’ll progress. We highly recommend regular weekly swimming schedules, especially during the fall and winter months, in order to help students retain developed skills and make swimming a fun, year-round activity.

What developmental differences does preschool have on an infant versus day care? A child’s brain undergoes an amazing period of development from birth to age three—producing more than a million neural connections each second. The development of the brain is inf luenced by many factors, including a child’s relationships, experiences and environment. Although there are many loving and safe day care programs available for infants, many parents choose to optimize this developmental window by enrolling their child in a high-quality early childhood program. These programs have experienced teachers specifically trained in infant development, didactic materials to stimulate young minds, a low adult-child ratio and a calm, soothing and beautiful environment. Q&A WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Eat less and exercise more.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE?

Wasting time in traffic or in unproductive activities/meetings. ARE YOU HIGH OR LOW MAINTENANCE?

Low. I’m pretty easy-going, flexible about most things, and don’t have a lot of needs. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Professionally, helping guide Cosumnes River College through the great recession with major budget cuts, building the Elk Grove Center from dirt to the first year, and building new career education programs while fostering a team of deans and maintaining relationships with faculty and staff leaders. FAVORITE HUMANITARIAN CAUSE?

Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. BEST WORDS OF WISDOM YOU’VE RECEIVED?

Discern between the important and the urgent; if you don’t, you may just get trapped in tending to the urgent. WHAT’S NEXT?

Helping, guiding and facilitating Folsom Lake College to reach “the next level.”

Whitney Yamamura “

I

’m a fourth-generation Sacramentan,” Whitney Yamamura, Folsom Lake College’s new president, proudly declares. The statement has special significance for him: He’s a Japanese American whose greatgrandparents first came to the U.S. as farmers. During World War II, his grandparents and great-grandparents survived Japanese internment camps. Despite these challenges, his family continued to work toward a better life for themselves and their descendants. And they succeeded: Yamamura is now the second Asian American president in the history of the Los Rios Community College District; he also serves on the board of directors for the Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce.

Yet Yamamura remains modest about his accomplishments and credits much of his success to his parents who encouraged his intellectual curiosity. Although originally enrolling in college to become a stockbroker, he found himself drawn to the big-picture problemsolving of economics, and while completing his master’s in the subject, discovered his love for teaching. “There’s nothing like the lightbulbs that go off when students understand a difficult concept,” he enthuses. Yamamura has now worked in the district, in teaching and administrative roles, for nearly three decades. He remains a passionate advocate for the transformative power of higher education, especially for those who— like his own family—are willing to work hard to

assie Berube creates stunning works using bright, bold hues influenced from her travels.

Color for the artist also represents rebirth— something Berube battled after being diagnosed with the endocrine disorder PCOS, and cancer shortly thereafter. Returning to her studio and creating works with vibrant colors helped Berube during the trying time, as being drawn to certain colors, she believes, happens when we’re in need of balance. The artist hopes to pass on this energy, as well as uplift, through her various works of color. “With the pervasive negativity that abounds, art is not only a much-needed release,” says Berube, “[but] it’s also a great way to funnel frustrations and express yourself in a positive way.” In addition to being a member of the Folsom Arts Association, Berube—who’s previously shown at galleries such as Studio 10 and Blue Line Arts—also features and sells her work on her website. HLB: HOW HAVE YOUR TRAVELS INFLUENCED YOUR ART? CB: In 2009, I took a tour management course at sea, and the ship had nine ports of call throughout the Caribbean and Central America. From the pastel buildings of Curaçao to woven textiles in Guatemala, I was impressed with how these cultures not only embrace color but celebrate it. One of my more significant travel experiences was going with my husband to India to meet his family for the first time. My senses were overwhelmed by the gorgeous saris with liquid gold embellishments, crimson, turquoise and gold—not only with the colors, but the exotically vibrant and fearless combinations in which [people] wore them. [That trip] encouraged me to take the plunge and be unafraid to work with bold colors. If I weren’t an artist, I would go back into the travel industry. We only have this world—how could you not want to explore it?

38

Tranquil Arch

HLB: AFTER YOUR DIAGNOSIS, YOU SAID YOU FOUND YOUR WAY OUT OF LIFE’S DARKNESS BY USING COLOR. HOW SO? CB: My world came to a screeching halt. I was too sick to work but had to put my energy somewhere, so I went back to my first love—art. I was drawn again and again to bright color palettes and found them uplifting and full of positive energy. I’m happy to say I’m cancer-free. HLB: WHAT’S YOUR ARTISTIC BACKGROUND? CB: I come from a family of creative “artsy fartsy” types. Both my father and grandfather taught art, and my mother is extremely creative. While I took some art classes in high school and college, for the most part I’m self-taught. I also couldn’t have done any of it, nor would I be the person I am today, without my Through October 8 – supportive husband. He’s my light. KANSHA Gratefulness

artbeat

HLB: WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TO VIEW YOURSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST? CB: It took several years and mad science experiments to gain enough confidence to show my work. I started with group shows and worked my way up to applying for gallery exhibits.

5 Food Fallacies

by KOURTNEY JASON

Advice about healthy eating is all around us, but how sage is this wisdom? Is there a kernel of truth or is it all just hearsay? Here, local dietitians debunk common food myths to help you separate fact from fiction.

1

Myth: Eggs are bad for your heart.

2

Myth: All carbs are evil.

Truth: Eggs are a very nutritious food—“they’re a good source of iron, zinc and also choline, which is important in a number of metabolic functions,” says Melody Steeples, MPH, RD, from Woodland Clinic Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation. As for their impact on your heart health? It’s outdated advice. Blood cholesterol levels are influenced much more by genetics than by diet. “Because of this, more recent government advice does not set limits for dietary cholesterol nor egg consumption,” she says.

Egg photo ©Pavel Lysenko - stock.adobe.com. Carbs photo ©bit24 - stock.adobe.com.

Truth: The fact is that what causes us to get fat is simply eating more calories than the body can burn, Steeples says. “One of the reasons carbs have a reputation of being ‘bad’ for us is that they’re often the major component of foods we find easy to overeat, like pasta, bread, tortillas, crackers, sweetened cereals, cookies, cakes and pastries,” she says. “But don’t confuse the role of whole-food carbs—like those from vegetables, fruits,

nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains and baked or boiled potatoes—with processed carbs. Whole-food carbs raise blood sugar more gently and supply a wealth of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that their stripped-down second cousins don't contribute.”

3

Myth: Low-fat is healthier than full-fat.

Truth: Nutrition is not one-sizefits-all, explains Chelsea Britton, RD, who’s on the Diabetes Nutrition and Education team at Marshall Medical Center. “Science does support limiting saturated fats and

health & wellness trans fats,” she says. “Most fats are a blend of different kinds of fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats—our body does not make them, so they’re essential to our bodies, [and] we need to eat regular sources. Ground flaxseed, chia [and] hemp seeds are highest, then fatty fish like salmon, herring and sardines, as well as greens. Many of my patients test for a high need of essential fats, and would benefit from increasing their olive, avocado and oil intake.”

4

Myth: Frozen/canned fruits and vegetables aren’t as nutritious as fresh.

registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Roseville. “Freezing has negligible effects on nutrients and can effectively preserve produce, so it can usually last at least six-to-nine months.” Canned vegetables also offer an advantage when there’s limited refrigeration. Though vegetables are often higher in sodium, reduced sodium varieties are available, and canned fruits aren’t usually high in sodium, she says.

5

Myth: Microwaving zaps nutrients from food.

Truth: The best cooking method for retaining nutrients is one that cooks quickly and preserves the integrity of the food. Microwaving is convenient, heats food for a short time, and uses little to no liquid. “Microwaving steams food from the inside out and keeps in more vitamins and minerals,” says Ann Wallace, RD, CDE, registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Roseville, adding that “it’s important to use microwave-safe glass, ceramic or plastic, as not all containers or wraps are safe for use in the microwave. Never reuse disposable plastic containers, like old margarine tubs, since some particles from the plastic may enter the food and not be safe to consume.” FOR EVEN MORE HEALTH MYTHS, VISIT STYLEFEDH.COM

Frozen vegetables photo ©uckyo - stock.adobe.com. Microwave food photo ©sergofan2015 - stock.adobe.com.

Truth: Lucky for busy people, all fruits and vegetables have value—no matter how they're processed. “In fact, frozen produce often has more nutrients than fresh, since it’s picked at the peak of ripeness and then frozen quickly to retain the high nutrient value,” says Kirsten Ransbury, MS, RD, CDE, lead

SPORTS INJURY?

Don’t play games with your injury. Diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries are best left to the expertise of orthopedic surgeons fellowship-trained sports medicine—like those at Marshall Orthopedics. From foot and ankle injuries, rotator cuff and meniscal tears, to ACL reconstruction and hip arthroscopy, trust the doctors at Marshall Orthopedics to get you back on the field.

INTRODUCING BRANDON BEAMER, MD Dr. Beamer recently joined Marshall after completing his fellowship in orthopedics and sports medicine at Stanford University. While at Stanford, he treated Olympic level and Division 1 athletes while also working as an assistant team doctor to the San Francisco 49ers. He is now excited to serve as one of the team doctors for the Oak Ridge Trojans. Dr. Beamer joins an established team at Marshall Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and is based at the new clinic in El Dorado Hills.

working with its first client. So far, to the Leer’s knowledge, Keegan’s Promise is the only agency offering financial help—money that goes directly to the service providers— that doesn’t have to be paid back. The organization handles only domestic adoptions of newborns and requires couples pay part of the costs in order to help as many people as possible. Prospective parents begin with an online application

Keegan’s Promise A Cradle Of Hope

t 31, Tanisha Leer was eager to start a family. For nine years, she struggled

to conceive—including four attempts at in vitro fertilization with her husband Stefan—but no baby came. Despite extensive testing, specialists couldn’t pinpoint a problem and diagnosed the couple with “unexplained infertility,” a catchall term that applies to as many as one-fourth of infertile couples. It was then that the Leers turned to adoption. “I couldn’t imagine going through life without being a mother,” Leer says. Though the process was intense, and at times close to heartbreaking, Tanisha and Stefan are now the parents of sparkling three-year-old Keegan. “He really is a miracle child,” Tanisha says. “He was the child I was supposed to have.” The couple had ruled out overseas and foster care adoptions because they wanted a newborn, and it took faith, tenacity and financial stability—all of which the Leers are fortunate to possess—before newborn Keegan was placed in Tanisha’s arms. Almost immediately, she knew she wanted to help other couples hoping to adopt. In January, the El Dorado Hills nonprofit, Keegan’s Promise, opened its doors with a mission to assist couples with the costs of adoption, which can run between $30,000-$50,000. “The average household can never afford to adopt,” Tanisha says. “Some couples mortgage their homes or take out loans.” In May, the foundation held its kick-off fund-raiser and is now

and are evaluated by the foundation’s board. Drawing on her own experiences, Tanisha also counsels couples to help smooth the adoption process. Some of her suggestions include: • Do a home study first. Adoption agencies must determine that your house is acceptable for a baby, and completing the study in advance will remove a possible roadblock later on. The studies are conducted by the county and valid for two years. • Try to work with a private adoption attorney. “If you go to an agency,” Leer says, “you’re one of hundreds of applicants. With our private lawyer, we were one of 11.” • Be aware, but not discouraged, that adoption is a gamble. Before the Leers got Keegan, they were promised a baby girl whose mother changed her mind. The money they’d spent was gone and the nursery they’d set up had to be redecorated, but they never considered giving up. • Don’t let yourself think it won’t work out. “There will always be that one baby that’s there for you,” Leer promises. “It may take a roller coaster of ups and downs, but the baby that’s meant for you will find you. I believe that.” keeganspromise.com

I love being part of this community and helping children learn and grow. My own journey began in the daycare preschool field because I was unhappy with the care and education I was receiving for my own children who are now 20 and 17. I have been blessed to have a large facility in El Dorado Hills where I employ 35 loving teachers and care for 200 children. We offer education and care for babies, Preschoolers, Pre-K, private Kindergarten, homework tutor club and transportation for school agers. Don’t be fooled by our large size, our teachers make each classroom homey and warm. It has been a bonus to be on an acre. The Gift of Kids outdoor area gives the kids space to explore, garden, and play on age appropriate playgrounds.

The teachers at The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool include talent that brings us music, yoga, and even Spanish on a daily basis. Teachers here are all educated in child development, CPR and First Aid certified, and make it a priority to continue their education. We also provide dance, soccer, and karate. Over the years, not only have we focused on love and education here at the school, but we have also been involved in sponsoring many local non-profit groups such as 3 Strands Global, Hands for Hope, American Cancer Society, Sports clubs, many local elementary through High Schools, Serrano Kids movie night, and even contributed to the Concerts in the Park at the CSD. When not at The Gift of Kids taking care of the school, my hobbies include running, snowboarding, boxing, hiking, camping and anything outdoors.

A Pulled Pork Tots Brisket Sammich

ccording to Urban Dictionary, heckle means “to harass a stand-up comedian during a performance. Usually heckling is

done through the means of yelling, jeering [or] taunting, but it also includes physical and bodily harm.” It’s the last sentence that concerned me as I walked through the doors of owner Matt Garrido’s new venture, Heckle Alehouse and Eatery. Fortunately, the name was just a sports term Matt heard during a bike race (bike racers and heckling?)—and it stuck. And although the staff T-shirt slogan reads “Great Beer, Great Food, Questionable Attitude,” Matt and his fellow Hecklers are downright jovial. The establishment is actually a tap house featuring 18 rotating brews, and a restaurant serving house-smoked meats—turkey, brisket and pulled pork, which the menu features in sandwiches or “sammiches”—in addition to burgers, hot dogs, salads and an impressive array of appetizers and sides. Though I enjoyed the pulled pork tots—crispy, buttery spuds topped with tender pulled pork, house-made coleslaw, and a drizzle of Carolinastyle mustard barbecue sauce on one half and a Memphis-style (vinegarbased) sauce on the other—as an appetizer, they’re actually a meal for two. Ne x t up w a s t he Br i sket HOURS 11 a.m.-9 p.m. (Sunday), Sammich, which arrived piled 11 a.m.-10 p.m. (MondayThursday), 11 a.m.-11 p.m. high with house-smoked beef (Friday-Saturday) brisket covered thoroughly in the TRY THIS aforementioned Memphis sauce. I Pulled Pork Tots, Brisket Sammich, Sweet Potato chose the slaw as my corresponding Tots, Southwestern Salad, Chili Burger, side —again reminiscent of a Street Tacos Memphis-style coleslaw w ith ALCOHOL pineapple and vinegar. Paired Beer (18 rotating taps) and wine alongside a blonde ale that Matt TAB recommended made for quite the $$ party on my palate. HEADS - UP Can accommodate The Smoked Turkey Sammich large groups; kids’ menu available; visit was no joke either, but can you their Facebook page really go wrong with moist turkey to stay up-to-date on tap takeovers and breast, cheddar cheese, lettuce, other special events; tomato and chipotle aioli? Served Happy Hour from 2-5 p.m. Monday-Friday ($1 alongside sweet potato tots— off beer and wine and 50-percent off their which are vastly superior to their “beer of the day”) first cousin, the sweet potato fr y— and light ly dusted w it h cornstarch to crisp them up in the hot oil spa, they're an obvious house favorite. And if you’ve come for vegetarian entrées? Fret not: The menu says, “We have a Gardenburger patty”—and a healthy dose of heckle too, I’m betting! Roasters’ co-owners Ty Manukyan and Will Rentfrow have been keeping the neighborhood caffeinated and fulfilled with an assortment of in-house roasted brews, specialty drinks, and homemade treats from Grateful Bread Co. in Fair Oaks. I recently stopped by to see what the buzz was all about, and ordered a fresh-baked Chocolate Croissant and what Ty and Will have dubbed the Little Rascal. With a buttery, flaky crust and fine chocolate chunks on the inside, the pastry was everything a croissant should be—and more. Served warm, it was pure melted chocolaty goodness and the ideal treat for a crisp fall day. The Little Rascal—featuring full-flavored espresso poured over half-and-half, and served on the rocks in a sugar- and honey-rimmed glass—could best be described as the coffee, non-alcoholic version of a margarita. The drink wasn’t only inviting to the eyes but the taste buds, too. Mixed with the cozy, rustic interior, friendly faces and upbeat Motown music, I departed perked up and ready to return. 6 Decadent Desserts

compiled by STYLE STAFFERS // photos by DANTE FONTANA

Whether rich and chocolaty or light, fluffy and fruit-filled, we’re big believers that sweet endings are the happiest endings. Save the best for last by trying one (or all) of the desserts below. In no particular order…

“The Cherry Hand Pies (available in November and December) from Whole Foods Market are my nemesis. Seriously—whenever I step foot inside, there’s a magnetic attraction that takes me to them, and I have to buy them. They’re my secret vice.” wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/folsom

“I like to think of myself as a cake connoisseur, and the moist, sinfully delicious offerings at Nothing Bundt Cakes pass my palate’s test with flying colors every time. I’ll often bring one of the Tiered Bundt Cakes to Thanksgiving, birthday or Christmas celebrations, and it always receives rave reviews. Favorite flavors include carrot, pecan praline and lemon, but you really can’t go wrong with any!” nothingbundtcakes.com/bakery/ca/folsom

“Tiramisu should be light and flavorful—a dessert that you want to take small bites of and savor. Some close friends from New Jersey (where delizioso Italian food can be found on every corner) were recently visiting and tried Visconti’s tiramisu for the first time. They took bites at the same time and—as if choreographed—fell back in their seats and proclaimed, ‘This is the best I’ve ever had!’ Yes, it’s that good.” viscontisristorante.com

“Nothing satisfies my sweet tooth better than filling up a bag of candy at Snooks Chocolate Factory. They have something for everyone: truffles, honeycomb, peanut brittle, gummies, salt water taffy…and the list goes on. It's literally like being a kid in a candy store!” snookscandies.com

“Trust me: The Chocolate Lava Cake from Land Ocean is worth saving room for. The warm and gooey chocolate ganache center, slightly melted vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, and addition of crushed Heath bar is what sweet dreams are made of.” landoceanrestaurants.com

“The Hot S’more Brownie at 36 Handles puts my campfire creations

to shame. It features a chocolate chip brownie, chocolate sauce, house-made marshmallow fluff that’s toasted, and is served warm with shards of graham cracker. Definitely a winner any time of year!” 36handles.com

Rancho Cordova’s Claimstake Brewing Co. has only been open for a little over a year and a half, but they already garnered an award at the 2017 California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition and were named “Best Brewpub” in the 2017 Sacramento A-List. With a constantly changing, extremely versatile tap list that’s created based on what customers’ want, they have a beer for any palate— from a black coffee lager (“Silent Shawn”) to a session hazy IPA brewed with pineapple (“Shawnalulu”). Their Lady Liberty Saison—dry-hopped on the Fourth of July—features warm spice notes, a juicy explosion of grapefruit, and a mellow hop flavor that sets off the sweetness in dishes like this month’s Apple Hill Cake. With an ABV slightly higher than average, it’s a perfect beer to crack open at the end of a meal. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles

Describe your business.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I provide portrait, wedding and event photography.

We provide mail handling services for both local and online customers in a warm, friendly and welcoming environment. Red Dot definitely found me. I didn’t have time to manage my own mail and saw the need to provide a mail handling service for all individuals.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? I worked at Baskin-Robbins and learned they have the best chocolate peanut butter ice cream on the planet!

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? A fairly recent venture of mine is working with the Food Literacy Center, an incredible nonprofit that teaches elementary school children about the importance of eating their vegetables. It’s been an incredible opportunity to give back with my photography.

Why is your staff the best in the business? When I have clients coming back year after year, it's reassuring to know I'm doing something right; not to mention, it's fun getting to document their growing families.

What’s your biggest job perk? Happy wedding tears. I love amazing, heartfelt toasts and adorable children!

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Thai Paradise, Sutter Street Grill, BJ Cinnamon, Mikuni, and Julian's Patisserie and Café.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? Red Dot helps give back to the community by providing a streamlined manner to handle personal/commercial mail, thus allowing individuals to partake in other pertinent matters. From time to time, our customers will notify us of a personal or special piece of mail they’re expecting, and we make it a point to look out for that package as if it were our own and alert the customer via email of its arrival.

Why is your staff the best in the business? We make it a point to treat our customers like family and provide a welcoming environment where they can discuss their mail concerns yet private enough where they can open mail at their convenience.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Make a Smile Children's Dental. They understand the importance of catering to customers’ needs and do their part in giving back by participating in events such as Adopt a Family, Christmas Giving Tree, and Back to School Backpack.

Costco (seriously!) and all of the beautiful bike trails.

And finally, customer service is…?

What’s your favorite local event that you go to?

Our motivation to provide the utmost care and attention to our clients. It’s also the reason we continue to grow and stay in business, since most of our customers come to us by word of mouth.

Folsom Pro Rodeo.

If you could be any other profession, what would it be? A background singer.

DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?

In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

his is the first issue of Style in many, many years that our longtime columnist Tom Mailey’s words are not gracing the last page. Like so many

of you, we were big fans, and we’re going to miss his creativity, his sense of humor, his obvious love of community, his family and, of course, his duck. Tom, we were both fortunate and honored to have you write for us—thank you! We look forward to your continued contributions in the magazine whenever possible. So, what do we do now? Well, we have thought about this long and hard, and we have a plan—and yes, it’s a good one! But more about that later. As you know, we reside in what’s being called one of the very best spots to live and raise a family in the U.S. Our quality of life is outstanding, and our weather is close to being the best in California (the best being WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? just a little more than 500 miles south on Don’t miss Style’s feature “Cool Beans: the coast). Now, we don’t know about you, A Local Coffee but if someone asked us, “What’s the one Crawl.” thing that stands out in your area—what does this area have to offer that other

places do not?” Well, we could tell them what a wonderful melting pot this region is—with its myriad of nationalities and cultures. Or we could mention the great shopping all around us. We could say our wonderful geography, with quick access to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and two world-class wine regions. But honestly, it’s going to be a little, or a lot, different for each of us, and that’s where YOU come in. We want our readers to get involved in a fun and easy way. Most of us have smartphones, with pretty good cameras, and if not we likely have a digital camera. We want you to be the photographer, and what we’re requesting from you is simple and fun. It’s called “Where We Live,” and the concept is this: Send us a photo of anything local—a tree, kids playing, a pet, the golf course, your family outing to Apple Hill, a favorite cocktail—you name it, you art direct it, and tell us why, in 20 words or less, this is the photo that says it all for you. Every month, we’ll pick our favorite, and use it in the magazine (along with others on our website). What’s more, each month’s featured photographer will win a gift certificate to a local business.

All submissions should be emailed to info@stylemg.com. Ready, get set—GO!
