Lisa Aikenhead began showing her photography in 2008, after producing numerous captivating wildlife and landscape images. In addition to being a

member of the Placerville Arts Association and El Dorado Hills Arts Association, she also displays her award-winning work at the Gold Country Artists’ Gallery, where she’s this month’s featured artist. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Aikenhead at the gallery’s Third Saturday ArtWalk celebration (October 21) before she heads to Kenya with a group of fellow photogs. HLB: HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY AS A PHOTOGRAPHER BEGIN? LA: Since I was a child, I’ve loved taking photographs and have always been driven to become a better photographer. While I love other art forms (I play fiddle and mandolin), photography is the form through which my soul shines. Previously, my career was in nonprofit management; in this spirit, I donate a percentage of all sales to wildlife and wilderness conservation and protection efforts. HLB: WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO SNAP THE SHUTTER? LA: I’ve carried a poem in my wallet for 25 years, an Inuit song published in the book Earth Prayers. It concludes: And yet, there is only one great thing, the only thing: to live to see in huts and on journeys/The great day that dawns, and the light that fills the world. I want my photographs grounded in the beauty of this poem. My work represents a search for peace, refuge and solace within me. My best photographs are made when my heart is wide open and my feet are grounded. More than documenting another pretty place I’ve seen, however, I yearn to create work that kindles love and honor for the world of the wild living things, and holds the fragility and beauty of humankind with tenderness and respect. HLB: HAS THERE BEEN A SIGNIFICANT MOMENT WITH YOUR NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY? LA: [My photo] The Chase: Wolves in Yellowstone captures one of the most thrilling moments of

Have you ever won an award? Chances are, if you have, the announcement made you feel on top of the world, if even for a fleeting moment, and is something you haven’t forgotten. Though my list of laurels may not be terribly long or impressive (no Nobel Peace Prize...yet) and I’ve definitely been the underdog more than the top dog, each award reminds me that hard work does in fact pay off. From a first-place finish at a Knights of Columbus free throw contest and a victorious report I wrote about sea turtles, to taking top honors at a dance competition in Australia and being bestowed with a M.U.G. Award while working at Starbucks (true story: I caught a customer red-handed using counterfeit coupons), I’ll always hold these accolades near and dear. In this month’s issue, we present our annual “Readers’ Choice Awards,” starting on page 26, where we announce the best of the region in categories that run the gamut from eats and drinks, to arts, culture, health, wellness and everything “The harder in between. To all the winners—congrats—the you work for community voted for you, something, the your product or service, greater you’ll feel and believes that you’re the when you achieve cream of the crop. I hope it.” —Unknown you don’t take the honor lightly, either—please, pop the bubbly, post your win on social media, and revel in all its glory! And for those new to the area, or longtime residents seeking a spot to workout, place to dine or automotive expert, the feature is a wonderful way to discover something new (after all, these people and places won for a reason) and overall guide to the locale we call home. I know I’m already making a list of businesses to check out and professionals to call based on our readers’ recommendations—and I hope you do the same. There’s much more in store, too. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we highlight local ways to bring attention to and raise funds about the disease in The 10 Spot (page 10). Whether you know someone currently fighting, have lost a loved one to the battle, or simply want to step up and show your support, there’s an opportunity for all. October 7 also marks Style’s signature event, Folsom Family Expo—a free celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Folsom Community Center that includes interactive exhibits from the Sacramento Children’s Museum, bounce houses, live entertainment, over 100 local vendors, “Healthy Folsom” (health and wellness demonstrations, discussions and activities), free Folsom Zoo admission and train rides (with ticket obtained at the expo) and more. It’s a perfect way to spend a Saturday and connect to your community; plus, you never know, you too could come away a winner (at the all-day raffle). See you there! — Megan megan@stylemg.com

5 Food Fallacies

by KOURTNEY JASON

Advice about healthy eating is all around us, but how sage is this wisdom? Is there a kernel of truth or is it all just hearsay? Here, local dietitians debunk common food myths to help you separate fact from fiction.

Myth: Eggs are bad for your heart.

2

Myth: All carbs are evil.

Truth: The fact is that what causes us to get fat is simply eating more calories than the body can burn, Steeples says. “One of the reasons carbs have a reputation of being ‘bad’ for us is that they’re often the major component of foods we find easy to overeat, like pasta, bread, tortillas, crackers, sweetened cereals, cookies, cakes and pastries,” she says. “But don’t confuse the role of whole-food carbs— like those from vegetables, fruits, nuts,

and supply a wealth of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that their strippeddown second cousins don't contribute.”

Myth: Low-fat is healthier than full-fat.

Truth: Nutrition is not one-sizefits-all, explains Chelsea Britton, RD, who’s on the Diabetes Nutrition and Education team at Marshall Medical Center. “Science does support limiting saturated fats and trans fats,” she says. “Most fats are a blend

Egg photo ©Pavel Lysenko - stock.adobe.com. Carbs photo ©bit24 - stock.adobe.com.

Truth: Eggs are a very nutritious food—“they’re a good source of iron, zinc and also choline, which is important in a number of metabolic functions,” says Melody Steeples, MPH, RD, from Woodland Clinic Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation. As for their impact on your heart health? It’s outdated advice. Blood cholesterol levels are influenced much more by genetics than by diet. “Because of this, more recent government advice does not set limits for dietary cholesterol nor egg consumption,” she says.

of different kinds of fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats—our body does not make them, so they’re essential to our bodies, [and] we need to eat regular sources. Ground flaxseed, chia [and] hemp seeds are highest, then fatty fish like salmon, herring and sardines, as well as greens. Many of my patients test for a high need of essential fats, and would benefit from increasing their olive, avocado and oil intake.”

4

Myth: Frozen/canned fruits and vegetables aren’t as nutritious as fresh.

Frozen vegetables photo ©uckyo - stock.adobe.com. Microwave food photo ©sergofan2015 - stock.adobe.com.

Truth: Lucky for busy people, all fruits and vegetables have value—no matter how they're processed. “In fact, frozen produce often has more nutrients than fresh, since it’s picked at the peak of ripeness and then frozen quickly to retain the high nutrient value,” says Kirsten Ransbury, MS, RD, CDE, lead

registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Roseville. “Freezing has negligible effects on nutrients and can effectively preserve produce, so it can usually last at least six-to-nine months.” Canned vegetables also offer an advantage when there’s limited refrigeration. Though vegetables are often higher in sodium, reduced sodium varieties are available, and canned fruits aren’t usually high in sodium, she says.

5

Myth: Microwaving zaps nutrients from food.

Truth: The best cooking method for retaining nutrients is one that cooks quickly and preserves the integrity of the food. Microwaving is convenient, heats food for a short time, and uses little to no liquid. “Microwaving steams food from the inside out and keeps in more vitamins and minerals,” says Ann Wallace, RD, CDE, registered dietitian at Kaiser Permanente Roseville, adding that “it’s important to use microwave-safe glass, ceramic or plastic, as not all containers or wraps are safe for use in the microwave. Never reuse disposable plastic containers, like old margarine tubs, since some particles from the plastic may enter the food and not be safe to consume.” FOR EVEN MORE HEALTH MYTHS, VISIT STYLERGBR.COM

working with its first client. So far, to the Leer’s knowledge, Keegan’s Promise is the only agency offering financial help—money that goes directly to the service providers— that doesn’t have to be paid back. The organization handles only domestic adoptions of newborns and requires couples pay part of the costs in order to help as many people as possible. Prospective parents begin with an online application

A

t 31, Tanisha Leer was eager to start a family. For nine years, she struggled to conceive—including four attempts at in vitro fertilization with her husband Stefan—but no baby came. Despite extensive testing, specialists couldn’t pinpoint a problem and diagnosed the couple with “unexplained infertility,” a catchall term that applies to as many as one-fourth of infertile couples. It was then that the Leers turned to adoption. “I couldn’t imagine going through life without being a mother,” Leer says. Though the process was intense, and at times close to heartbreaking, Tanisha and Stefan are now the parents of sparkling three-year-old Keegan. “He really is a miracle child,” Tanisha says. “He was the child I was supposed to have.” The couple had ruled out overseas and foster care adoptions because they wanted a newborn, and it took faith, tenacity and financial stability—all of which the Leers are fortunate to possess—before newborn Keegan was placed in Tanisha’s arms. Almost immediately, she knew she wanted to help other couples hoping to adopt. In January, the El Dorado Hills nonprofit, Keegan’s Promise, opened its doors with a mission to assist couples with the costs of adoption, which can run between $30,000-$50,000. “The average household can never afford to adopt,” Tanisha says. “Some couples mortgage their homes or take out loans.” In May, the foundation held its kick-off fund-raiser and is now

and are evaluated by the foundation’s board. Drawing on her own experiences, Tanisha also counsels couples to help smooth the adoption process. Some of her suggestions include: • Do a home study first. Adoption agencies must determine that your house is acceptable for a baby, and completing the study in advance will remove a possible roadblock later on. The studies are conducted by the county and valid for two years. • Try to work with a private adoption attorney. “If you go to an agency,” Leer says, “you’re one of hundreds of applicants. With our private lawyer, we were one of 11.” • Be aware, but not discouraged, that adoption is a gamble. Before the Leers got Keegan, they were promised a baby girl whose mother changed her mind. The money they’d spent was gone and the nursery they’d set up had to be redecorated, but they never considered giving up. • Don’t let yourself think it won’t work out. “There will always be that one baby that’s there for you,” Leer promises. “It may take a roller coaster of ups and downs, but the baby that’s meant for you will find you. I believe that.” keeganspromise.com

In Sickness and In Health El Dorado County Hospital

operating costs, the legislature levied an annual hospital tax on county residents from $.25 to $1.50 per capita per year. In addition, resident patients worked in the vegetable gardens, which provided food for the hospital and a small income for the facility. By 1899, the county hospital was in poor condition and a grand jury recommended disposing of the property in favor of a better location. The county, however, determined to initiate one of several renovations so— in 1912, after fire destroyed most of the buildings—the facility was again rebuilt. In 1924, fire partially destroyed the complex necessitating reconstruction and in 1946, the hospital was rebuilt and modernized at an estimated cost of $345,000; in 1965, another new building was added.

I

n the early days of El Dorado County, taxpayers contributed a sizeable sum for the care of the indigent sick. Because of a lack of facilities in the county, however, these

individuals were often sent to Marine Hospital in San Francisco. In 1855, the state legislature made arrangements for each county to care for the incurably afflicted, aged, imbecile, deaf and dumb, blind, “those whose mutilations from disease or accident incapacitates them from earning a livelihood,” and the poor, the destitute, and the unprotected. On June 9, 1855, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors contracted with Drs. Asa Clark and O. Harvey of Placerville to care and provide for these individuals. Under contract, the two physicians were to provide a building for and render services to the indigent sick for $3,500 for one year; the county was to furnish other necessary materials. The Broadway House in Upper Placerville became the first county hospital for the poor. In 1860, the state legislature provided funding for county infirmaries for the indigent. Under the direction of Drs. John Cook and I.S. Titus, a new county hospital was built on 8.92 acres on Quartz Hill (near the current El Dorado County Health Department buildings on Spring and Tunnel Streets). The new complex included a hospital and infirmary, a pestilence house (or isolation ward used extensively during the outbreak of tuberculosis in the early 1900s), residences, a edcgov.us/government/ cemetery/pages/county_ cemetery, and a large fruit and vegetable garden. The facility was hospital.aspx# managed by the county physician and was under the control of usgennet.org/usa/ca/county/ the El Dorado County Board of Auditors. eldorado1/co_hospital_cem.htm The hospital received no income from its patients and relied Historical Souvenir of El Dorado County California by Paolo Sioli on the county to provide funding for supplies. The county leased the facility to Universal Medical Systems Corporation in 1972, and the name was changed to Mother Lode Medical Center Hospital. El Dorado County stood to receive ample compensation under the terms of the lease, including payment for upkeep and new equipment; however, in 1974, the hospital was closed and the remaining buildings were replaced. The El Dorado County Hospital Cemetery (also known as the Pestilence House Cemetery) was established in 1855 as a final resting place for indigent patients who had no family or other means to procure a burial. The first burial occurred around 1855 and the last in 1934. It’s unclear how many people were interred in the cemetery, as records were scanty and many have been lost in subsequent fires. In the early days, grave markers were made of wood and have since rotted away. A push was made to mark graves with slate headstones and later with numbered metal posts, but those too have been lost with time. The cemetery covers approximately one acre behind the El Dorado County Health Department and is all that remains of the El Dorado County Hospital.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Like everyone else on the planet, there will be a great number of trials in your life; if you have food, shelter and people in your life who you love and who love you—there’s nothing to really worry about!

WHAT COMES TO YOU NATURALLY?

Eating ice cream. A pint of HäagenDazs is a single serving! Math was always easy for me. BIGGEST LIFE INSPIRATIONS?

Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. Both talked about social justice in a way that has stayed with me through all my years. I was young and idealistic, [and I may be] older now, but am still idealistic. Today, I would give credit to every New Morning employee—they make miracles happen every day— how can that not be inspiring? WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I’m proud of what New Morning has provided to our community the past 47 years. On a personal note, I’m very proud of my son. He’s an enormously caring human being and an awesome father.

I inherited that from them.” Ashby went on to work his way through college, originally thinking he would become a professor, but he later had what he calls a “crisis of consciousness”—an intense desire to make more of a direct impact on people’s lives. “I needed to be on the front lines, helping people,” he recalls. After moving to Placerville to provide a more stable life for his son, he went on to become the executive director of New Morning Youth and Family Services—an organization that provides counseling for children (up to 18 years old) and support for runaway, abandoned and homeless youth—and has been in the role for 20 years now. In addition to his work with New Morning, he’s a member of the Placerville Kiwanis Club, and the Child Abuse Prevention Council, among other activities. “If we ignore the kids who are struggling, if we don’t give them a chance to become the best they can be, we’re losing a valuable resource,” he insists. —Amber Foster

The Little Italian Place A Flair for Flavors

by SHARON PENNY

Sometimes it can take a while for a new restaurant in the foothills to get word of mouth going, but not for The Little Italian Place. Placerville has been

sinfully decadent without being too heavy. The chef's suggestion of adding Italian Mikey's Meatball sausage provided a punch of Calzone protein and even more flavor. Though there’s handmade desserts—cannoli with sweetened ricotta and candied fruit dipped in pistachio or chocolate, and everyone’s favorite, made-from-scratch tiramisu—we Caprese Salad failed to leave any room. Soon, very soon, however, they will be mine. Despite being there well HOURS: before the “normal” dinner Noon-8 p.m. (Sunday, Wednesday, hour, there were already Thursday), noon-9 p.m. (FridaySaturday), closed Monday-Tuesday people on the patio, and TRY THIS: the dining room filled up Caprese Salad, Lasagna (only available Friday and Saturday after quickly as we were eating. 5 p.m.), Mikey’s Meatball Calzone, Penne Boscaiola, Cannoli The restaurant itself is ALCOHOL: modern and has the style Beer and wine of a hip downtown eatery TAB: $$ but the welcoming feel of a HEADS-UP: family-friendly, small-town Spacious outdoor patio; check their Facebook page (facebook. establishment; what’s more, com/wickedgoodpizzaplacerville) for specials; live music on the service is affable and quick, weekends; sign up for their newsletter to receive birthday everyone’s welcome, and specials and invites to exclusive everyone leaves with a smile wine dinners; Sicilian-style pizza sold by the slice having been fed the meal of their dreams.

waiting with bated breath for these doors to open, and two weeks after the official grand opening (when I made it in), locals were still coming out in droves. Located just five miles off the highway in a former gas station on the corner of Pleasant Valley and Bucks Bar Roads, not far from Somerset,The Little Italian Place is the smaller, second location for the owner of The Place Cannoli in Roseville, Michael McDermott and his wife,Amber—and homemade Italian cuisine is what’s on the menu. The name doesn’t lie, either: “The place” is definitely little, but it’s cozy and—thanks to a spacious patio—there’s plenty of room for hungry locals. The feel is relaxed and casual, too—with communal, family-style seating and counter service. For an early Saturday dinner, my plus one and I opted for a caprese salad, “Mikey’s Meatball Pie” calzone, and penne bosciaola with sausage. The salad was visually stunning, thanks to oven-cured tomatoes bursting with flavor, pillowy soft, bright white fresh mozzarella, and a generous helping of imported prosciutto di parma—artfully woven into a “rose”—with basil, EVOO, and a swirl of balsamic reduction to,

Ciao Deli

// Opening their doors this past spring, Ciao Deli has perfected the unique concept

of both charming deli and weekday farmers’ market. Housed in the former Hoosegow location, they’ve renovated the space into a bright and cheery café—replete with inspirational words and quotes on the walls and a small selection of seasonal produce and spices. In addition to daily specials and sides, a fully loaded salad bar also beckons. With just about any topping one could imagine, including fresh fruit, flaxseeds and water chestnuts, patrons can select their desired ingredients and watch a beautiful masterpiece come to fruition. On my visit, I needed bread to break the hump-day blues so I requested a Chicken Sandwich on a fresh hoagie roll with all the fixin’s. With organic produce and meats that are preservative- and hormone-free, slow-roasted and shredded, the staff built a sammie so stacked it could barely fit into one bite. Brimming with ripe veggies like bell peppers, cucumbers, pepperoncinis, avocado and sprouts, on top of the traditional lettuce, tomatoes and onions, it was truly a deli delight. Though I took my order to go, they also serve a small selection of organic beer and wine, so I encourage you to grab a seat, sit back and stay awhile. Whether rich and chocolaty or light, fluffy and fruit-filled, we’re big believers that sweet endings are the happiest endings. Save the best for last by trying one (or all) of the desserts below. In no particular order…

“If you’ve never tried the St. Honoré Cake from Allez! you’re missing out. Named in honor of the French patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs, Saint Honoré, it’s essentially a puff pastry cake filled with vanilla (or almond) pastry cream and covered in hard caramel, with fresh berries and vanilla whipping cream. The complicated-to-make confection is rarely seen on dessert menus, making it all the more reason to order one.” allezeldorado.com

“The Hot S’more Brownie at 36 Handles puts my campfire creations to shame. It features a chocolate chip brownie, chocolate sauce, house-made marshmallow fluff that’s toasted, and is served warm with shards of graham cracker. Definitely a winner any time of year!” 36handles.com

“The Cherry Hand Pies (available in November and December) from Whole Foods Market are my nemesis. Seriously—whenever I step foot inside, there’s a magnetic attraction that takes me to them, and I have to buy them. They’re my secret vice.” wholefoodsmarket.com/ stores/roseville

“A day exploring Apple Hill isn’t complete without stopping at Taste of Europe for a slice of their homemade Apple Strudel. Made using apples from Boa Vista Orchards, and loaded with raisins and warm spices in a powdered sugardusted pastry, the plentiful portion isn’t sickeningly sweet and always golden and delicious.” 530-306-6670

“Trust me: The Chocolate Lava Cake from Land Ocean is worth saving room for. The warm and gooey chocolate ganache center, slightly melted vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, and addition of crushed Heath bar is what sweet dreams are made of.” landoceanrestaurants.com

“Tiramisu should be light and flavorful—a dessert that you want to take small bites of and savor. Some close friends from New Jersey (where delizioso Italian food can be found on every corner) were recently visiting and tried Visconti’s tiramisu for the first time. They took bites at the same time and— as if choreographed—fell back in their seats and proclaimed, ‘This is the best I’ve ever had!’ Yes, it’s that good.” viscontisristorante. com

PAIRS WITH... CLAIMSTAKE BREWING COMPANY’S LADY LIBERTY SAISON ABV: 6.3% IBU: 55

Rancho Cordova’s Claimstake Brewing Co. has only been open for a little over a year and a half, but they already garnered an award at the 2017 California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition and were named “Best Brewpub” in the 2017 Sacramento A-List. With a constantly changing, extremely versatile tap list that’s created based on what customers’ want, they have a beer for any palate—from a black coffee lager (“Silent Shawn”) to a session hazy IPA brewed with pineapple (“Shawnalulu”). Their Lady Liberty Saison—dry-hopped on the Fourth of July—features warm spice notes, a juicy explosion of grapefruit, and a mellow hop flavor that sets off the sweetness in dishes like this month’s Apple Hill Cake. With an ABV slightly higher than average, it’s a perfect beer to crack open at the end of a meal. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles

FRANK VILT

JULIA CROTEAU

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

We’re a bakery that prepares everything as fresh as possible. We specialize in wedding cakes and gourmet cupcakes, but also make cannolis, cake pops, brownies and French pastries. It started as a small side venture that I did out of my house, but since being voted “Best Wedding Cakes” on the Sacramento A-List my first year, it took off.

I’m a full-service boutique photographer with a studio located in the El Dorado Hills/Lotus area and specialize primarily in weddings, families, boudoir, seniors and fur babies. My business found me. I always enjoyed art, and could visualize what I wanted to create but couldn’t draw, so I grabbed a camera many decades ago and realized I could create what my mind saw. When I look at the world, I see it as a framed print and how I can improve upon it.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? My first job was at a local country French restaurant, Zachary Jacques. I started out as a dishwasher and moved up to doing pastries and desserts. I learned so much from the experience— mainly my love for the restaurant and bakery industry.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I love being able to help out our community and have donated my time and product to many charities and groups such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, the local chamber of commerce, the Rotary Club, MakeA-Wish Foundation, and MORE, among others. I’m always happy to help out, and I love being able to make people happy with my baking. Food really does bring people together.

What’s your hidden talent? I can whistle really loud.

What’s your biggest job perk?

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I’m involved with my local neighborhood groups, animal rescues, law enforcement and military. My studio is located on acreage in a country setting, which also helps me to be part of the community and close with my neighbors. I’m an avid animal lover, and will go above and beyond to help with raising needed funds, adoptions, fostering and pet care whenever possible. I also produce a yearly event in August called Forever Memories, where I provide a fun session for law enforcement families and give them their favorite 8x10 print at no charge.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Losing 170 pounds about 20 years ago. My parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all passed away early in life, and obesity played a major factor. I wanted to be the change in this generation, so I did just that—by watching what I eat and exercising.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

Eating and smelling fresh treats as soon as they come out of the oven. The smell of fresh baked goods gets me every time.

I like to have quiet time with my husband and our three Labrador retrievers. If I’m stressed or worried, they always bring me back to my happy place.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?

We love going to the river and lake and are so lucky to live where we do. Our favorite spot is a swimming hole just past Kyburz.

Pete's Restaurant and Brewhouse and Selland’s Market-Café.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? We love to go to Apple Hill in the fall.

DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?

In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

of you, we were big fans, and we’re going to miss his creativity, his sense of humor, his obvious love of community, his family and, of course, his duck. Tom, we were both fortunate and honored to have you write for us—thank you! We look forward to your continued contributions in the magazine whenever possible. So, what do we do now? Well, we have thought about this long and hard, and we have a plan—and yes, it’s a good one! But more about that later. As you know, we reside in what’s being called one of the very best spots to live and raise a family in the U.S. Our quality of life is outstanding, and our weather is close to being the best in California (the best being WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? just a little more than 500 miles south on Don’t miss Style’s feature “Cool Beans: the coast). Now, we don’t know about you, A Local Coffee but if someone asked us, “What’s the one Crawl.” thing that stands out in your area—what does this area have to offer that other

places do not?” Well, we could tell them what a wonderful melting pot this region is—with its myriad of nationalities and cultures. Or we could mention the great shopping all around us. We could say our wonderful geography, with quick access to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and two world-class wine regions. But honestly, it’s going to be a little, or a lot, different for each of us, and that’s where YOU come in. We want our readers to get involved in a fun and easy way. Most of us have smartphones, with pretty good cameras, and if not we likely have a digital camera. We want you to be the photographer, and what we’re requesting from you is simple and fun. It’s called “Where We Live,” and the concept is this: Send us a photo of anything local—a tree, kids playing, a pet, the golf course, your family outing to Apple Hill, a favorite cocktail—you name it, you art direct it, and tell us why, in 20 words or less, this is the photo that says it all for you. Every month, we’ll pick our favorite, and use it in the magazine (along with others on our website). What’s more, each month’s featured photographer will win a gift certificate to a local business.

All submissions should be emailed to info@stylemg.com. Ready, get set—GO!

Denim and Diamonds The Upper Room Dining Hall— which serves over 3,500 meals each month to the families, veterans and homeless in our community and relies solely on donations—is hoping to make a big impact with their inaugural Denim and Diamonds fund-raiser. Attendees will enjoy plenty of appetizers, desserts, live music by Maria Behm and her Dawn Riders and a no-host bar, and can try their luck with auctions and a raffle. "We’re looking forward to this event and encouraging people to attend, because they’ll have a fabulous, fun evening with excellent food, entertainment and activities, while helping to feed the hungry in our community," explains co-chair volunteer Carmen Burns. The Upper Room Dining Hall is the only soup kitchen in El Dorado County and serves meals 365 days a year—most times being the main source of food for those who stop in. All the money from ticket sales will go toward feeding those in our community who utilize The Upper Room. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 for a couple, and table rates are also available. —Emily Peter
