My friend Roxanne once told me, in regards to charity, that as long as she was able to be on the giving side of things then life was pretty good. That really stuck with me.

favorites Placerville resident Karen Carter originally thought she’d apply her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies to a career in elementary education. After college, however, she ended up working for Snowline Hospice, and the experience proved life-changing. She spent the better part of the following 15 years with the company and took many life lessons away from the experience. “The biggest thing I learned was that death is natural. In our society, it’s feared and often has a negative connotation, but in reality death is simply part of our life’s cycle. It can be calm and peaceful,” Carter shares. She also gained an appreciation for how big an impact non-profit organizations can make on a community. These days, she and her husband co-own

Carter’s Carpet Restoration in Placerville, but Carter continues to give back whenever she can. The business often donates free carpet cleaning to area nonprofits (including Snowline), and when she isn’t running the business or raising her two children—ages 11 and 14—she’s serving on the El Dorado Community Foundation, an organization that invests and administers charitable funds, and Women’s Fund El Dorado, a group of donors who band together to make significant grants to area nonprofits. “I really do try to think on a community level,” Carter explains. “The more we can support each other as a community, the stronger it becomes as a whole.” —Amber Foster

When brewing at home, make sure your water is steaming but not boiling (somewhere between 160-195-degrees Fahrenheit), since water that’s too hot will release more tannins from the tea leaves making it more bitter. Second, you’re using too many tea leaves. You only need two to three grams of tea per six-ounce cup (about one teaspoon). Start with two grams and work from there. Last, and the most common mistake, is you’re steeping it too long. Most teas should only steep for three to five minutes. There are, however, a few exceptions to this; for example, sencha should only be steeped for one minute or it will turn bitter, and most medicinal and herbal blends may steep for unlimited periods of time without turning bitter (this is because they contain only herbs and not actual tea leaves). Many people like to steep these types of "teas" for 12-30 minutes to extract the full flavor and potency of the herbs. AB & NC: We play highly eccentric rock and tend to pull from all of our influences as a group and as individuals, which gives us a large sonic palate to work with. We've all listened to world music and classic rock, but we also have our individual influences, [thus giving] our music character. AR: I started playing guitar with old mariachi songs, which shaped how my hands move to play. Avery spent years becoming acquainted with jazz, which is essentially how we met. Nick played a lot of funk and jam styles and all of that together is what really makes our sound “ours.” HLB: WHAT’S THE MEANING BEHIND YOUR NAME? AR: By committing to music, we’re committing ourselves to a “gypsy” lifestyle. Boys & Girls Club's Placerville Clubhouse Opportunity Knocks

From his first day as CEO of the Boys & Girls Club El Dorado County Western Slope in 2009, Sean McCartney knew he was doing something special. “This is more than a job; it’s a chance to change a life every day...a privilege all of us take seriously,” McCartney says. Every day during the school year, more than 350 kids come to the after-school program at one of the Boys & Girls Clubs’ three locations in El Dorado County; and over 250 attend the summer program in Placerville. Although they come from all different backgrounds, many are from broken homes and face tough challenges. The club provides a safe place for them to have a meal and—thanks to programs focused on academics, character, citizenship and healthy lifestyles—hopefully leave better than when they came in. Central to that hope is a mantra of “Yes You Can.” According to McCartney, “Too often the kids we serve are told ‘no you can’t’—that they can’t succeed because of the color of their skin, the clothes [they wear], or their family life, [but] not here. We say ‘yes you can’ go to college, stay out of jail,

Positive encouragement is the most important thing that happens [here].” That optimism is aided by the recent opening of the new Placerville Clubhouse, a $5 million, 15,000-square-foot facility funded entirely by community support. It’s an amazing testament to the community’s belief in the club’s work. The new clubhouse offers a game room, teen room, art room, a full gym and computer lab, plus a kitchen that serves more than 1,000 meals a week. It also boasts a warm and inviting feel—a noticeable contrast to the concrete walls of the 50-year-old Placerville armory where it previously operated. “This new clubhouse wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Jim and Maureen Carter, who got the ball rolling with a lead gift,” McCartney says. “Jim himself was a club kid, so he knows firsthand about the important work we do. Now a success himself, his gift will be a lasting legacy for this community.” With the new clubhouse open, the Boys & Girls Club is poised to start a new story in the region, but it’s one that still needs community support. It costs them $2,000 a year for one child to be part of the program, so residents who want to help are encouraged to sponsor a child and support those who need it most. “It costs society more than $100,000 a year to keep a child in juvenile hall; compare that to our costs and consider which one really represents a better use of taxpayer dollars and a better investment in the future,” McCartney says. “We want kids to walk through these doors and know that people care about them... Delegation, but to no avail. His planned trip of two weeks turned into a year of wrangling with the Department. In the end, they claimed all the money—leaving Little with “a balance of one dollar and forty-five cents in my favor having allowed me but a small profitication [sic] of expenses and I was about ten thousand dollars out of pocket.” According to the Placer Herald of 1853, Coloma was the principal post office in California. It was a hub for postal service to surrounding towns with six “Pony Expresses” delivering mail and charging one dollar for each letter. In 1854, the Empire County Argus, a Coloma-based weekly, noted that over 4,000 letters and packages left the Coloma post office bound for the East Coast. Many of the letters that reached Coloma, however, ended up in the Dead

Letter Office in San Francisco, as the addressee had either moved on, passed on, or never even made it to Coloma. Little may have been appointed postmaster because he had a well-established store and a head for business. He also had the first ferry service across the American River connecting the mining camps on the south side with his store on the north. In 1850, he partnered with Ed Raum to build the first wagon bridge across the river. The partners charged a toll to cross and recouped their expenses within three months. Little eventually moved to San Francisco where he became a real estate broker. Mining camps came and went, as did the post offices associated with them, but the Coloma Post Office has lived on for over 165 years; some claim it’s the oldest continuously running post office west of the Mississippi.

Wright explains the design is a “contemporary adaptation of the early California adobe-style architecture with some Santa Fe-style overtones.” The one-level home has mission clay tile roofing and a stucco exterior, as well as exposed wood beams and paneled ceilings, terracotta tile floors and hand-textured plaster walls throughout. Wright says the owner is currently planning a separate guesthouse, garage/ shop building and solar electric power.

The terrace patio cabana is outfitted with a fireplace, pool bath and pool equipment; the master suite near the garage mudroom includes the laundry, a master bath, large bedroom, wardrobe and a small retreat study; while the family and guest bedrooms, located on the opposite side of the living zone, each have a private bath. There’s a dramatic wood circular staircase leading to an upper level “crow’s nest” man cave, which has a toilet, bar and balcony patio.

STYLE & INSPIRATION: This residence is situated on a steep

rural site overlooking the south side of the South Fork of the American River, an area heavily wooded with pine, fir and cedar forest. Built in modern international-style architecture, the three-story home is an efficient structural module that uses structural-insulated panels (SIPs). The house also has a rooftop entertainment terrace, which minimizes its footprint on a steep mountain hillside. The owners are audiophiles, so the two-story interior living volume is acoustically tuned and balanced. Since the owner is a zip line enthusiast, there are two separate zip lines along the mountain hillside.

AMENITIES: A four-story elevator allows easy access for all to each level. Home details include a tiled rooftop view entertainment terrace, complete with a rooftop spa, barbecue, fireplace and an outdoor dining area. Extensive glass windows maximize the view and reflect the stunning surrounding forest. “The exterior materials are designed to be fireproof, low maintenance and durable in snowy, freezing conditions,” says Wright, noting the home can easily be heated with the fireplace—blending “charm and efficiency.” The outside boasts low-maintenance, high durability cement/wood fiber, horizontal lap siding and vertical corrugated “corten” (a rust-finished sheet metal).

is patterned after the traditional Australian ranch-style architecture and has a covered porch with log columns, wood beams and a corrugated roof. Keeping with the rugged Australian outback theme, the exterior walls are finished in rustic stone with stucco. Wright says the home is “suitable to the hot summers and cold winters of the Sierra Nevada foothills” and fits well into the ranch house subdivision environment. Design wise, the inside features exposed wood beams and ceilings and cabinetry that complements the natural materials

AMENITIES: Since the home is environmentally friendly, it’s laid out to optimize passive solar heating and cooling and designed for high-energy efficiency. The roof and walls are constructed of structural-insulated panels (SIPs); in addition, there are rooftop evaporative cooling towers, radiant heated floors, solar electric power and high efficiency appliances. Other green features include water catchment and storage, PV solar electric, evaporative cooling towers and water conserving landscaping. The living and sleeping areas surround and open onto the central “U”-shaped courtyard, which has a swimming pool, spa and entertainment patio area. The open end of the courtyard overlooks a heritage oak tree view. The house, which incorporates security systems and safe rooms, also includes a separate RV garage, as well as a bathroom and guest bunkhouse.

style home was designed for a Bay Area couple looking to retire in the foothills and make it their forever home. The custom design features a main level living space with no steps at the entry door, and a same level work studio and shop space below for the couple’s businesses. Designed to work with the property’s sloping lot, the great room has 17-foot ceilings and large glass doors and windows on both sides to showcase

views of very tall pine trees; a large interior vaulted ceiling boasts full span wood beams. The property also features a beautiful local view and a large vineyard off the master bedroom suite. Since the owner enjoys gardening, Booher and Boswell installed underground water tanks to catch winter rainwater, which can be used for the gardens in spring and summer. The homeowners have additional plans to build a deck with an exercise pool off the rear and install an

The job required quality materials and an attention to detail, resulting in a polished home that includes authentic touches like real stacked stonewalls, shaped timber beams and braces, and replicated craftsman color schemes. The craftsman style can even be seen in the master bath, which features an open shower arranged around a circular tile mosaic column. “The interior was completely reconfigured,” says Piches, noting the garage and utility areas became a large recreation room and office.

AMENITIES: The property includes a pond, horse barn and detached carriage house that was built for three cars and guest accommodations.

STYLE & INSPIRATION: This addition and remodel

was built for a homeowner who had memories of living in Europe as a child. He loved the verticality of the castle spaces and wanted to add a tower to his one-story home. “Our challenge was to design an addition with a tower that would be appropriate in the setting of the bucolic Placer foothills, while blending easily with the one-story proportions of the existing home,” says Piches, explaining that the resulting “barn-inspired tower structure” steps down to the existing lower onestory roof with board and batt siding and a metal roof, which brings continuity to the new and existing parts of the home. The new entry features a stone-walled courtyard, which boasts an outdoor fireplace and sitting area.

AMENITIES: The home includes a great room, a new recreation room, a gym, a main floor library and a home office in the tower.

Placerville Public House As Local As It Gets

Things are getting pretty lively on Main Street with the recent opening of Placerville Public House. The bright open space and relaxed, friendly atmosphere is perfectly set up for communal eating, drinking and general merriment, which many nights comes in the form of live music and games. Although there’s a huge array of bottled beers and local wines on offer, it’s the 14 draft beers that really steal the spotlight. The small yet deliciously crispy dark chocolate cannoli with vanilla ice cream was the perfect end to a fun and satisfying lunch. With friendly service, inventive eats and excellent brews, Placerville Public House is sure to become the place where everybody knows your name—come on down and introduce yourself!

Fork Lift // When Nugget transformed their Cameron Park Food 4 Less into

Fork Lift in the fall of 2014, shoppers got the best of both worlds. The budget-friendly pantry staples stayed, while a supreme produce and meat section, self-serve salad bar, and the can’t-be-ignored cheese counter joined the culinary celebration. Their deli also offers numerous drool-worthy mains and sides that can be heated up at home (think Vietnamese meatballs and crispy risotto cakes), but on my recent visit, I fell for their made-to-order sandwiches. The concept is BYO (build your own), allowing patrons to pick from a plethora of meats, cheeses, toppings and freshly baked breads. Indecisive eaters—such as yours truly—can tell the friendly staff what they like and let them work their magic. For a small chunk of change, it was one of the best sammies I’ve ever had. Marinated and tender tri-tip was topped with tarragon mushrooms, onions and sweet red peppers, jalapeños for kick, Havarti cheese and peppery arugula—all piled into chewy ciabatta that had been slathered in their house-made garlic-ranch and artichoke-Romano sauces (they’re not on the menu but available in their fresh produce section) before being grilled on the panini press. DARK CHOCOLATE CAKE + RED WINE SYRUP Do you need a girlfriend to drink and eat wine with? Yes, I said “eat.” This chocolate cake has a pronounced wine flavor (but not too much), and the sweet red wine syrup on top is just, well, the icing on the cake. Plus, it’s an excellent way to use the dark cocoa powder in your pantry. While I love this dark chocolate cake with its subtle wine flavor, I love the red wine syrup the most. I’m already dreaming up new ways to use it. Would my morning bowl of oatmeal be acceptable? Please say yes. FOR THE CAKE 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 5 tbsp. dark cocoa powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. fine sea salt 1 large egg

1/3 cup neutral oil 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/3 cup red wine FOR THE RED WINE SYRUP 3/4 cup red wine 2 tbsp. granulated sugar

P r e h e a t t h e ov e n t o 350-degrees Fahrenheit and line a six-inch cake pan with a small circle of parchment paper. Spray the exposed sides of the pan with cooking spray. Sweet & Simple: In a small bowl, Desserts for Two whisk together the flour, by Christina Lane sugar, cocoa powder, (Countryman baking soda and salt. In Press, 2017, $27.95) a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, oil and vanilla. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir gently until mixed, adding the wine about halfway through.

Pour the batter into the pan and bake on a baking sheet for 30 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean, with a few crumbs clinging to it. If you underbake the cake, it will sink as it cools. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, make the wine syrup: Combine the wine and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil until reduced to two or three tablespoons, about 15 minutes. Remove the cake from the pan and place on a serving plate. Slice and serve with the red wine syrup drizzled on top. Pairing beer and dessert is still quite unusual for some, but Amador Brewing Company’s Night Hike Porter is one of my favorites and may change your mind. It’s a mix between an American and Baltic porter, giving it a slightly roasted flavor with hints of dark fruit. Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I had always enjoyed the winemaking process—from agriculture to enjoyment—and it was something very tangible to offset the largely intangible results generated when I was a Silicon Valley CPA.

I’ve always known that someday I would turn to real estate. After a 15-year stint as the project director for a contract program between a local vocational school and the State of California, as well as being a fifth generation resident of El Dorado County, it was a natural progression. I did not intend to own or manage my own office—that just kind of happened—but it’s working out nicely.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? I cleaned stables. Talk about learning from the “bottom.”

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? We donate to every cause that asks, as long as they visit us to pick up the donation, and pour our wines at local fund-raising events. We’ve picked a few special causes—including King Fire Relief and the Celina Alexandre Memorial Scholarship Fund—and raised amounts in the low five figures through our efforts.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Waitressing. I learned how to provide excellent customer service.

Why is your staff the best in the business? They are all honest and trustworthy.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? My children.

Know Thy Neighbor Conversing to Create Community

I went to a memorial recently. It was for a neighbor. He lived at the end of our street for years. Craig. An ironworker. Nice guy. Divorced. Lived by himself. When he first moved in, we talked regularly, mostly about what country concerts were coming up or fishing, which he loved to do. I told him we’d go out in my boat sometime. But, we never did. And in late November he passed away. I knew he’d gotten hurt on Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning the job a few years ago and wasn’t working Show on New anymore. I knew he’d become reclusive. Nicest guy you’d ever want to know. He loved NASCAR and the Miami Dolphins. I learned that, as an ironworker, pretty much any Motel 6 with a stairway built in the past 30 years in Northern California was worked on by Craig, and he was quite proud of that. He loved his kids—you could see that in onscreen images that flashed during a tribute. He loved his friends—you could see that by the number of them in attendance. Heck, two ex-wives and an ex-girlfriend were there. Likeable. I learned the reason he became more withdrawn was a struggle with alcohol, which was exacerbated by his injury. Ultimately, both played a part in his passing. I feel like if I’d made an effort to get to know him better, to be a better neighbor, that maybe, in some way, a difference could have been made…? I don’t know. But I wish I had. A few years before all this, another neighbor passed away. Yvonne. An elderly but spry, tiny little white-haired lady originally from France. She lived one house over. She had a delightful singsong accent and never failed to greet you with a smile and hello as she went for one of her daily walks. She kept cookies by her door for the neighbor kids. We attended the same church, and if we weren’t there on a given Sunday, she’d ask where we were. She kept her yard immaculate and drove a sweet late model sky-blue Toyota Avalon all over Roseville. I always wanted to invite her over—she grew up in France during World War II. My dad served there. I wanted to share some of his stories, and hear hers. I never did. But I wish I had. At her memorial, I learned she was part of the French Resistance, that she helped Jews and others in danger from Nazi occupation escape via an underground railroad of sorts. She was a courier, riding her bike past enemy soldiers with baskets full of groceries. Missives and messages were hidden in the groceries; the soldiers never suspected that a young teenage girl could be so bold or so brave. She never got caught. She was a badass. We are all so much more than we appear on the surface. We all have stories. And in this day and age, when it’s easier than ever to metaphorically pull into our collective garages and close the door behind us, I think it’s important to remember that. It’s on all of us to reach out to each other, to go beyond just waving hello or making small talk. To really get to know one another. Because we’re all neighbors. It’s worth a try.
