editor’s note

I’ve always loved discovering new dining destinations. Although it’s easy to play it safe with a trip to Chili’s and order a dish you know and love (cue the “Baby Back Ribs” jingle), there’s something special about supporting a small business where the chef—who might also be the owner—clearly puts passion into every plate. Plus, you never know when you might find a new foodie favorite. I recently stumbled upon a Mediterranean market that doubles as a deli (Babylon City Market) and ordered the crispiest, most authentic falafel fritters to ever hit my lips. Tucked inside stillwarm, made-to-order samoon (Iraqi flatbread) with a generous spread of creamy hummus and fresh veggies, I was so smitten by the s a n dw i ch ( a n d t h e $3.49 price tag) that I returned the following weekend…and the weekend after that. Whether falafel makes you say “yuck” or “yum”—I urge you all to break out of your restaurant rut and dig into our region’s food scene. Need some ideas? For the third year in a row, we asked Style staffers to share their most memorable meals out, and in our feature, “30+ Must-Order Eats and Drinks,” we dish out the picks. It’s a perfect guide to getting your grub on locally. From blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bakeries, to new kids on the restaurant block, and established eateries that have been serving the community for 20-plus years, there’s bound to be a bite (and cocktail) for all. Hungry for more? In Taste, we have the recipe to make Fried Chicken with Buttermilk Slaw, and a beer pairing to boot; and in The Hit List we present our “6 Favorite Sandwiches” that’ll have you pining for a picnic. Once you’ve finally had your fill, flip to the Calendar for a jampacked month of events that run the gamut from fancy fund-raisers to —Irish Proverb family-friendly festivals; and The 10 Spot for “St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations,” featuring local, creative ways to pay homage to the holiday. As always, I’d love to hear from you—what you like, dislike and want to see more of in our magazine. Drop me a line at megan@stylemg.com; and if you happen to see me in line at one of our area eateries, please say hello. Bon appétit! — Megan megan@stylemg.com

ask the experts Why is sugar bad for your teeth? There’s a complex ecosystem of bacteria in the mouth, and eating foods high in sugar provides an easy food source for some of it. The bacteria produces acid by digesting the sugar; in turn, those acids come in contact with the teeth and can cause a breakdown of the tooth structure over time, which is how dental cavities are formed. Saliva (aka spit) helps to protect our teeth. Every time we eat or drink, it can take 30 minutes for the saliva to neutralize the acid, which is why it’s not advised to continuously snack or sip on drinks containing sugar. Water is a great option instead. Sabrina Jang, DDS // Make a Smile // 2190 East Bidwell Street, Folsom // 916-365-9563, makesmile.com

Fourth CoolSculpting® Session

What’s the difference between a violin and a viola? The violin and the viola both have the same hourglass shape, four strings and are played with a bow, and because of this, they belong in the same string family. However, just like siblings in a family are not identical, this is true with the violin and viola as well. The viola’s body is longer (16.5 inches compared to 14 inches for the violin), and its four strings are longer and heavier. These physical differences give the viola a deeper tone than the violin. Another difference is that only three out of the four strings are the same (G, D, A); the fourth string on the viola is the low C string, compared to the violin’s high-sounding E string. Again, because of the low C string, the viola produces a lower, deeper sound. Lastly, music for the viola is written in a different musical notation than the violin. “You miss all the shots you never take.” I’ve had such an amazing and adventurous career up to this point, and I have never regretted any chance I’ve taken.

Julian Perrigo-Jimenez Julian Perrigo-Jimenez knew from a young age that he wanted to pursue a career in culinary arts. Growing up in Folsom, his grandmother and uncle were avid cooks, and he would help in the kitchen whenever he could—especially when it came to bread and desserts. “I fell in love with the artistic side of baking,” he explains. “I like to create different flavors and presentations…to innovate.” After high school, he went to culinary school to become a pastry chef; and following graduation, honed his skills in a virtual cornucopia of kitchens— from cruise ships to multiple hotels and resorts in Las Vegas. He also traveled the world, taking continuing education classes and working under

These days, Chef Julian is happy to find himself back home in Folsom, where he lives with his wife and two children, ages four and five. He’s also the owner and pastry chef of Julian’s Patisserie and Café (jppastryarts.com). Sitka; and short, blond male Bethel were rescued from a “hoarding situation” in Southern California. From there, these wolf hybrids were moved to a Northern California rescue group and ultimately made their way to the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. They’ve adjusted well, often walking their fence line and checking out visitors who admire them from afar. Stop by the zoo to say hello—and for a howling good time.

Casino Night Benefit

Catch All photo by Terry Blesso.

Through the Casino Night Benefit on March 18, the Folsom Cordova Education Foundation (FCEF) hopes to bring Folsom Cordova Unified School District’s parents, staff and community members together as they raise money to benefit programs in the district’s 33 schools that support reading and literacy programs, parent and community involvement, college and career readiness, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) programs. The event’s many sponsors provide valuable business services to the schools through construction, health education and more, and this will be an opportunity for them to positively influence students through the programs supported by the FCEF. Meant for anyone 21 and older, there will be casino games, appetizers, music, dancing, a no-host bar, raffle, silent auction and great prizes—all at the Folsom Community Center from 6:30-11 p.m. Tickets are $30. “Come out and support our students and our schools!” encourages FCEF President Joanne Reinking. —Tara Mendanha

Membership Madness at Harris Center for the Arts—Contribute to Culture and Community by KRISTEN CASTILLO

MEMBERSHIP MADNESS

ASK ME

March is Membership Madness Month for the Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College. The goal for March: attract at least 100 new members with each donating $150 or more.

We’ve always had a membership program but this is the first time we’ve had a month-long drive,” says Sally Howard, Director of College Advancement at Folsom Lake College and the Folsom Lake College Foundation. Also new - “Donors will receive membership benefits and can now direct their gift,” says Howard, explaining donors can choose to earmark their contribution to preferred areas, including: support of the center’s presenting program, youth arts outreach, and general operating funds. For most performing arts organizations, ticket sales alone generally fund only half of the annual budget. The remainder of the organization’s operating budget usually comes from fundraising. Currently the Harris Center has 320 donor members. If 100 new members join at the $150 level, the center will have an extra $15,000 for the year. “Half a million people have gone through the Center in the past six years and have benefited,” says Phil Braverman, co-chair of the Folsom Lake College Foundation arts committee. “We’d like to broaden that support. During Membership Month, we’re asking people to support us at the level they can afford.” D onor Me mb e r s w i l l r e c e iv e a membership pin. Membership benefits for the $150 to $299 “friend” level also include: recognition in season Playbill; an invitation to season preview events; the opportunity to purchase tickets before the general public during the season’s presale; and 15 percent off single tickets to next season’s Harris Center Presents shows during the Donor Member summer sale through August 31, 2017. There are additional annual membership levels including “Patron” level for those who donate $300-$499; the “Associate” for donors contributing $500$999; “Supporter” for those donating $1000-$2499. Membership levels continue to “Advocate” and “Composer” levels, as well the “Designer” level with those contributing over $10,000. Harris Center hopes to restore the ClassACTS! K-12 Matinees for the 2017-2018 season. During 2015-2016 season, more than 10,000 students attended shows at a reduced rate of $5 a ticket thanks to a corporate sponsorship. While that sponsorship ended, the kids’ desire to learn about arts is still going strong. “They really loved it and we want to bring it back,” says Howard, noting the program served school districts region-wide, across six counties. ”We are looking for a successful membership drive to help us do just that.” Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law since the Folsom Lake College Foundation is a non-profit organization under the auspices of the Los Rios Foundation. Please visit harriscenter.net for more information on being a donor-member.

our pets by BRAD CAHOON, DVM

Does your dog keep you awake at night with constant scratching, licking and chewing at their skin? Just like us, dogs can get allergies when their immune systems develop sensitivities to certain allergens. Even though these allergens are common in most environments (plant pollens, mold spores, dust mites, cat dander, cigarette smoke, food ingredients, flea bites and certain shampoos or perfumes) and harmless to most animals, a dog with allergies will have an extreme reaction to them when inhaled, ingested, or when they come into contact with your dog’s skin. How are allergies treated in dogs? Traditional first-line therapies often include medications, such as antibiotics and cortisone, which are necessary to treat an active inflammatory skin process, but do not offer prolonged relief; plus, they can carry some undesirable side effects if used long-term. Thankfully, new medications are available for longer, safer and more effective management, including Apoquel (tablet) and Cytopoint (injection.) Both of these therapies break the itch cycle by blocking the release of proteins that cause itching and inflammation, as well as blocking the brain’s response to scratching; what's more, they're generally very well tolerated, have very few side effects, and have almost no interactions with other medications. Utilizing these newer medications or approaching the management of allergic skin disease with diet therapy, Eastern medicine and supplements gives us many effective options to help our furry friends. ASK THE PET PROS WHAT’S THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO HOUSE TRAIN A PUPPY? Potty training a new puppy can be frustrating. The key is to have a good “game plan” and to be very consistent in where you allow your puppy to do her business. Here are some tips to make the process as smooth as possible. »» Take away all “free” roaming of your house. This can be accomplished by using a puppy pen, an outdoor dog run or a crate. If your dog can do her business wherever and whenever she wants, you’re going to have challenges. »» Take your dog out frequently to a designated potty area, even when she is not showing signs of having to go. This will build a routine and familiarity with the potty area. When your puppy does go, give plenty of praise. »» If your puppy has an accident in the house, clean it immediately. If the accident is on carpet, get it professionally cleaned to remove the scent. »» If you allow your puppy to roam in the house, pay continual attention to her. Keep a leash connected to her collar so you can quickly take her outside if you see signs of having to go potty. Normal indicators are sniffing out a spot and walking in circles. »» If your puppy has an accident in the house, do not rub her nose in it or yell. These tactics do not work, period. If your dog has an accident in the house, stay calm and take her outside to finish. Remember, consistency and positive reinforcement are the keys to success! Sandie Zang Coloring Her World

by HEATHER L. BECKER

Sandie Zang didn’t discover her artistic gifts until after retirement while taking her first painting class. The accomplished artist, who’s involved with numerous local arts associations and artist groups,

currently displays her pieces—all bursting with texture, shape and vivid acrylic and oil colors—at The Bag Lady Boutique and Sutter Street Artist Gallery in Folsom. Zang’s “wherever her artwork takes her” mentality is guiding her into new exhibition and gallery spaces this year, including Danielle’s Creperie in Sacramento. “I love being involved with the Folsom Arts Association, Sacramento Fine Arts Center, Northern California Arts, Sutter Street Artists, and Two Rivers Artists Group,” shares Zang.“They’re all wonderful groups of artists, friends and kindred spirits—they’ve helped me grow.” MARCH 2017 // stylefedh.com

I didn’t realize I had a God-given gift inside of me at the time and wanted to learn more, so I started oil painting classes with accomplished artist Kirk Miller, who’s also a fantastic teacher and mentor. I read, took workshops and classes, watched demos and played with all sorts of mediums.

Rumor Has It

5 Health Myths, Debunked

by KOURTNEY JASON

1

myth Antiperspirant causes breast cancer. truth Antiperspirants—which reduce underarm sweat—and

deodorants—which cover up odors—do not cause breast cancer, says Dan Herron, MD, director of Women’s Imaging at Mercy Imaging Center. “This myth may persist [since] we ask women not to use either prior to a mammogram, [as] the particles they contain can falsely look like calcium deposits on the mammogram and raise a false alarm of cancer,” he explains. “The Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2002 reported on a study that showed no increased breast cancer risk in women who used antiperspirants or deodorants. Additionally, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports no evidence that aluminum—the active ingredient in antiperspirants—nor the infrequently added paraben preservatives cause breast cancer.”

Eating fish during pregnancy

“Fish is important for the brain development of a baby. However, highmercury fish like swordfish and shark should be avoided,” says Katherine Gillogley, MD, division head of OB/GYN at Mercy Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation. “A British study published in 2007 showed that children of women who ate no or less fish during their pregnancy had a greater chance

of poor developmental outcome (IQ, social behavior, fine motor coordination and communication) than those whose mothers ate more fish. Bottom line: Eat eight to 12 ounces of small- to mediumsized fish (low mercury) per week while pregnant.”

myth You can get the flu from the flu vaccine. truth Ashley Sens, MD, and Department of Pediatrics

chair at Dignity Health Medical Foundation’s Davis clinic, clarifies what it really means when you say “the flu.” According to Sens, “influenza is a respiratory illness caused specifically by the influenza virus [that] causes high fever and a severe cough and can cause pneumonia.” That said, you won’t get the flu after getting the flu vaccine. “In a randomized double-blind study, volunteers were either given a flu vaccine injection or a salt-water injection. The only difference in reaction between the two groups was the group who received the vaccine had more soreness and redness at the injection site,” she says. “There was no difference between the groups in terms of fever, muscle aches and pains, cough or illness of any kind.” With few exceptions, everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season, she says.

4

myth Vaccinations cause autism. truth There are many myths around this issue,

says Michael Chez, MD, director of pediatric neurology research and epilepsy surger y director at Sutter Neuroscience Institute. “Almost every claim of vaccines causing autism has been debunked,” he says. Yet autism rates continued to rise. “The issue is not vaccinations, but more commonly numerous factors—including prenatal risks, maturity when born, genetics and environmental issues,” he says. “Because vaccines occur when children are also developing—at two months, four months and six months— this often coincides with parents becoming aware something may be wrong, [which is] why parents often confuse what they see as cause and effect, instead of separate risk factors and issues that cause the observed changes.”

5

myth truth

Sugar makes kids hyper.

Parents, don’t fret. That candy bar will not have a sig nif icant effect on your kids’ behavior. “There have been numerous studies looking at food additives, dyes and sugar content, which have been worrying parents as a cause of hyperactivity in children,” Chez says. “These have all come to produce no evidence that sugar content—or majority of dyes or additives—causes changes in baseline behaviors.”

Sierra Moms

Passionate Parents Unite by JANET SCHERR

If you’re a mom, imagine going to an amazing party at a unique venue (Amador Flower Farm, anyone?) with fun activities planned for all to enjoy. Did we say that food is provided? Oh, and that you can bring the kids and hubby, too? Sierra Moms is a locally based nonprofit that—in addition to hosting awesome parties for its members and their families—helps local women connect with one another to find support in their role as mothers, and assists local charities by providing grants and volunteer service. Established for nearly 25 years, the organization has evolved from a small group—originally called the Folsom Moms Club—to an extensive community serving approximately 220 families in the greater Folsom and El Dorado Hills area. “The purpose of the club has always been to bring moms and their kids together,” says Melissa Cvitanovic, currently serving her second term as president. “Along the way, there have been significant milestones that have shaped who we are today, including our Children’s Activity and Preschool Expo, which we launched in 2008, [and has since] become a big event that greatly benefits local preschools and children’s businesses, as well as the families who attend.” Another high point was adding their Business Partners Discount program, which allows Sierra Moms to partner with local businesses and provide its members with worthwhile discounts—oftentimes in amounts over and above the annual $45 membership fee. Cvitanovic recalls that she found Sierra Moms through a web search when she was seeking to expose her young children to different activities and playgroups. She liked what the organization was accomplishing philanthropically and, after attending a few events and meeting many of the members, was hooked. In her current role as president, Cvitanovic enjoys helping to plan the events. “Our Spring Quarterly party is planned for the beginning of [next month],” she says. “In the past, we’ve had great food, an Easter bunny, bounce houses and an Easter egg hunt. Also, our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner will be held later this spring to reward our awesome volunteers and board members who have contributed to Sierra Mom’s success.” Throughout the year, the nonprofit hosts weekly playgroups and ongoing outings; in addition, there are various monthly events just for the moms such as movie nights, a cooking club and a book club. What’s more, members have numerous opportunities to donate to local causes and charities, including Sierra Moms’ backpack drive benefitting Twin Lakes Food Bank, Gifts From the Heart, and the El Dorado County Food Bank. Cvitanovic welcomes all interested moms to find out how they can connect with the organization. “Sierra Moms has a diverse membership, but there is a common aspiration to be the best mothers we can be,” she enthuses. “At the same time, we can help our community and be great role models for our children.” sierramoms.org photos by DANTE FONTANA

Seaside Style

3 Tips to Creating a Beachy Abode

by KERRIE L. KELLY, ASID

Star ting a project from scra tch is some thing all designers live for, which is exactly what Kerrie Kelly Design Lab (KKDL) was able to do at this beautiful home in Folsom. The owners of the twostory residence—which features a light, bright interior with distressed hardwood floors and creamy beige walls throughout— were looking to incorporate their love for the Hamptons coastline.

Kerrie L. Kelly is an interior designer who has created several model homes in Northern California. See her latest set at Veranda at Empire Ranch by Elliott Homes in Folsom or online at kerriekelly.com.

44

To sprinkle in their affinity for the seaside, KKDL used bursts of teal, soft blue and gray, paired with distressed gray finishes and metallic accents to balance the oceaninspired color palette. The finished product is a beautiful, resort-like escape, including a living room that’s both inviting and exciting with splashes of bright blue balanced by soft, tufted patterns; and rustic wood finishes, which make the space feel approachable and cozy, especially dotted with the couple’s favorite art prints above

a beautiful wood and mirror console. The bistro-inspired dining space drifts into the kitchen with an open floor plan, making it easy for the couple to cook family meals together without feeling like there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Durable countertops, paired with light gray shaker cabinets, lend a cool and collected vibe to the entire downstairs space. The upstairs area continues to feature the light and airy color sequence, adding in softer layers for bedrooms and office spaces. Decorative details like oversized mirrors, unique bookcases and greenery bring the look to life, making this seaside escape especially swoon-worthy.

NEW TO THE COMMUNITY

HERE ARE A FEW TRICKS TO MAKE THIS SEASIDE STYLE ALL YOUR OWN:

1

Play with Pattern . With so many types of blue incorporated into this home’s design, it’s important to break up the color palette with pattern. Stripes, abstract strokes and polka dots look especially lively when paired with these specific blue tones.

2 3

Make it Metallic. To add a lively touch, use metallic accents. On a picture frame, side table or accessory, glimmers of silver or gold brighten any room. Totally Textured .

Tufted rugs, distressed wood flooring and shaker cabinets give the space a livable and approachable feel. Add a bit of texture in each room to keep the look consistent and cozy.

When hunger pangs hit and a cocktail is calling your name, it can be dif f icult deciding where to feed your need and what to order when you ar rive. Luckily, for the third year in a row, Style staf fers put their taste buds together and compiled over 30 of their favorite local dishes and libations. In no par ticular order…

Head to Bacchus House Bistro for Happy Hour (served Wednesday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to close) and order their Chicken Wings. Made using an original buffalo wings recipe from Buffalo, New York, they’re flash fried—as opposed to deep-fried—so for semi-health conscious eaters they’re perfect, and taste great too! $9, 1004 East Bidwell Street, Suite 100, Folsom, 916-984-7500, bacchushousebistro. com

I'm not a sweets and pastry person (despite my love of the macaron), but I love the Cronuts at BJ Cinnamon; plus, I’m always impressed with how nice the owner is. On my first visit, he was working behind the counter and when I told him I’d never been in before, he didn't charge me for my cronut. Talk about customer service! $2.50 each; 402 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, 916608-8824

Give me Argos Caffè’s Lavender Latte any day of the week and you’ve got a happy camper. Subtly sweet, faintly aromatic and silky smooth, this concoction came straight from the heavens. Pair it with a locally made, decadent Cinnamon Roll, and you’ve got a winning combo. What’s more, it’s the only coffee shop, to my knowledge, that doesn’t charge extra for soy milk. I’ll drink to that! $4.50 (small latte), $3 (cinnamon roll); 195 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 100,
Folsom, 916-293-8256, argoscaffe.com As a lox lover and bagel buff, it shouldn’t be a shock that I’m such a big fan of the Lox and Cream Cheese sandwich at Big Apple Bagels. Made fresh onsite every morning, their bagels are the perfect vessel for the cured salmon, tomatoes, red onions and capers. Just make sure to ask for it toasted with onion chive cream cheese! $8.99, 2209 Francisco Drive, Building 10, El Dorado Hills, 916-936-4343, bigapplebagels.com I've been going to Bakerie and Latte Chateau Arme for 14 years and love how everything is homemade and baked fresh every day by Owner Helen. My go-tos for breakfast include a raspberry scone or cinnamon roll, but the Chicken Salad Sandwich at lunchtime is my absolute favorite. The blend of crunchy celery and walnuts, creamy mayo and savory chicken—all stuffed into a flaky croissant—is out-of-this-world incredible. $8.50 + $2 for croissant, 2222 Francisco Drive, Suite 500, El Dorado Hills, 916-939-0834 I used to get Chicken Yakitori in Japan and Hisui Sushi’s dish takes me right back to a little café in Yokohama every time I have it! Try it now; thank me later. $6, 25004 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 107, Folsom, 916-9857778, hisuisushi.com

Ask anyone who enjoys Italian food about the dishes they love most, and you’ll almost always hear, “it’s the sauce!” Visconti’s, a favorite Italian restaurant among locals, prepares their signature, family-recipe marinara every single day, and it’s ridiculously good! But what you probably didn’t know is that you can buy the sauce and bring it home. Whether you’re looking to please the family, or impress your friends, this sauce will win them over every time. And if you want some noodles with your sauce? Their Spaghetti and Meatballs is the best plate of pasta around. $15 (pasta) $15 (quart of marinara); 2700 East Bidwell Street, Suite 700, Folsom, 916-983-5181, viscontisristorante.com

Mikuni is my number one spot for fresh and flavorful seafood. My two favorites are the Rainbow Roll and the Oysters on a Half Shell. I’ve even turned a couple of hesitant friends onto oysters after tasting Mikuni's. Served simply—with only ponzu sauce and a dot of sriracha to add tang and a kick—they take an ordinary oyster and make it extraordinary. Their rainbow roll is a classic that doesn't need any fancy sauces to delight, and balances the fish to rice ratio perfectly. $10.95 (sushi), Market Price (oysters); 185 Placerville Road, Suite 100, Folsom, 916-9345250, mikunisushi. com/locations/ folsom

I’ve never seen a more appetizing pie than the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza at Chicago’s Pizza With-A-Twist. Not only is it beautiful to look at, but it comes loaded with tangy chicken, sharp onions, green bell peppers and fragrant cilantro, hitting the spot every single time. $7.99 (personal), $11.99 (small), $14.99 (medium), $18.99 (large), $20.99 (extra-large), $23.99 (family size); 1750 Prairie City Road, Suite 140, Folsom, 916970-9900, chicagospizzatwist.com

Don't let the line deter you, Sunflower Drive-In Natural Food is well worth the wait! Whenever I'm looking for a tasty yet healthy meal (aka, all the time), I make a stop here for a Super Nutburger. The nutmeat patty is sure to impress even the most carnivorous, while the fresh veggies like onions, tomatoes, romaine, tomatoes and sprouts add a delightful crunch. I often add avocado for an extra oomph. Eaten alongside their fresh Carrot Juice (juiced while you wait), makes for the perfect meal, bound to satisfy all. Trust me, there's a reason the line is always so long. $7.59 (super nutburger), $2.99 (small juice), $3.29 (large juice); 10344 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Fair Oaks, 916-967-4331 Snooks Chocolate Factory is where I go after a heavy meal, before a movie and to buy lastminute gifts for friends and family who live out of town. I’m a sucker for their Truffles. The mango habañero flavor is particularly dynamite (in a good way). $2.25 each; 731 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-985-0620, snookscandies.com

I always make sure to save room for the Doughnut Holes at Sienna Restaurant. Served with a trio of dipping sauces— Jack Daniel’s crème anglaise, chocolate and raspberry— they’re little bits of heaven and the sweetest ending to a memorable meal. Oh, and forget a glass of milk with this dessert; the Vanilla OldFashioned is the only beverage you’ll need. $9 (dessert), $12 (cocktail), 3909 Park Drive, El Dorado Hills, 916-941-9694, siennarestaurants.com I’ve tried more than 15 poke restaurants in recent months and Fishology Poke Bar has the freshest ingredients and most generous portions around. You can’t go wrong with any of their made-to-order Poke Bowls, but my favorite combo is with sushi rice as the base; salmon, yellowtail and tuna for protein; and, to top it off, crab salad, edamame, green onions, mango and spicy mayo. I could eat it every day! $11.95 (small), $13.95 (large); 2784 East Bidwell Street, Suite 400, Folsom, 916-587-1899, fishologypokebar.com

The Thai Seafood Fat Pot at Fat’s Asia Bistro is like a treasure hunt of flavors— with its layers of seafood and veggies in a rich red curry coconut broth that’s full of spicy goodness—and always my go-to order. An area institution for over 75 years, the quality of Fat’s ingredients, friendliness and knowledge of their staff, and warm and inviting atmosphere cannot be overstated. And if you haven’t been to their Happy Hour, then you haven’t been to Happy Hour! $16.25; 2585 Iron Point Road, Folsom, 916-983-1133, fatsrestaurants.com

Steak Fajitas are always a good call, but especially when dining at Cascada. Tender, flavorful beef is served sizzling hot alongside a plentiful helping of sautéed onions and peppers, cilantro rice, black beans, guac, sour cream, pico de gallo and fresh tortillas. To really get the fiesta going, order the ridiculously delicious Cascada Margarita. $12.25 (fajitas), $11 (cocktail), 2222 Francisco Drive, El Dorado Hills, 916-934-0800, eatcascada.com I urge you to try Land Ocean New American Grill’s Creamy Blue Cheese Dip with their house-made potato chips. It’s been called “incredible” and “delightful” by my companions, and will make your taste buds sing. Give the pomegranate Special K Martini a go, too; made with house-infused orange vodka, it’s a pretty sight and even tastier sip. $10 (dip), $10 (martini); 2720 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, 916-983-7000, landoceanrestaurants.com

Take a seat at the communal bar at Samuel Horne’s Tavern and cozy up with folks and a beer from near and far. I tend to go with the refreshing and light Allagash White Ale to pair with an order of Blue Cheese and Bacon Fries. The laid-back atmosphere will comfortably keep you there for the entire evening. $6 (pint), $6.75 (fries); 719 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-293-8207, samhornes. com What a wonderful world we live in—one where you can pair cheese, nuts and chocolate together. Yum! The Baby Bleu Silk at The Chocolate Architect is like nothing I’ve ever had. The dark chocolate, blue cheese and toasted pecans make for a magical mouthful. $1.50 each; 250 Palladio Parkway, Suite 1335, Folsom, 916-966-9006, chocsilk.com Asian Bistro is my family’s favorite for Chinese food. Their service is quick and friendly, their food hot, and servings plentiful. We typically order the General Chicken, Beef Broccoli, Chow Mein and Honey Walnut Prawns; it’ll leave your wallet happy and belly full! $9.50 (chicken), $8.95 (beef), $6.75 (chow mein), $10.50 (prawns), 2222 Francisco Drive, Suite 200, El Dorado Hills, 916-933-0260

The Spicy Sriracha Shrimp Tacos at Folsom Tap House feature sriracha-glazed prawns, grilled pineapple salsa and pickled onions in fresh corn tortillas. The spice from the sriracha pairs perfectly with the grilled shrimp and sweet pineapple. For healthier eaters, they’re a great choice. $7.95, 25005 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 140, Folsom, 916292-5711, folsomtaphouse.com While the California Roll might at times be considered boring or “safe,” when you find a good one, there’s nothing like it. My go-to is at Suishin Sushi. It truly is perfection, which—in a world of California Rolls—speaks volumes! Plus, the price is right. $5.75; 194 Blue Ravine Road, Folsom, 916-985-8885, suishinsushi.com The Oolong Milk Tea with Pearls at Gong Cha features oolong tea as the base, which is unusual (most establishments use Ceylon) but works in all kinds of wonderful ways with its delicate floral aroma and buttery notes. I love how they allow you to customize the sweetness and ice cube level, too! $3.25 (medium), $3.75 (large); 24988 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 108, Folsom, 916-790-8766, gongcha-usa.com

Repeat after me, Huachinango; now say Mariscada. Good—you just pronounced the names of two of the best Mexican seafood dishes you will have anywhere on the West Coast, and they’re available at local favorite Mexquite. Huachinango is made with red snapper and shrimp, sautéed with mushrooms, jalapeños, onions and tomato sauce. Mariscada is grilled fish, shrimp, mussels, clams and calamari sautéed with onions, tomatoes and mushrooms. Both are served with cilantro rice and black beans. Never thought of ordering seafood like this at a Mexican restaurant? Do it—you’ll be so happy you did! $17.49 (huachinango), $18.49 (mariscada); 25095 Blue Ravine Road, Folsom, 916-984-8607, mexquite.com

All the pastries—mainly European-style delights—at Julian’s Patisserie and Café are mind-blowing (they make everything from scratch), but the Chocolate Praline Eclair is to die for. Even my fussy husband who is against sugar, especially desserts, loves Julian’s—now that is a challenge! Be sure to call ahead, however, as pastry selections change daily. $6.25, 6610 Folsom-Auburn Road, Suite 7, Folsom, 916-936-4735, jppastryarts.com The Combination Soup at Pho ABC features an addictive, aromatic broth that’s always served piping hot. The Combination includes all the essentials of pho, as well as tender tendons (my fav!). Doctor it up with the accompanying herbs and veggies (Thai basil, bean sprouts, lime juice and jalapeños) and a squirt or three of srirachi and hoisin sauce, then dig in! $7.50 (small), $8.50 (large), $9.50 (extra-large); 602 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, 916-817-8588, phoabc.com

Nothing Bundt Cakes offers 10 flavors as well as seasonal special flavors, but my all-time favorite is the delectable White Chocolate Raspberry Bundlet. The moist, fluffy cake with a swirl of raspberry and hint of white chocolate melts in your mouth and leaves you wanting more! $4.49; 2793 East Bidwell Street, Suite 200, Folsom, 916-984-4383, nothingbundtcakes.com/bakery/ca/folsom For a light lunch that’ll fill you up without bogging you down, the Koo Koo Roo Salad at Coffee Republic is always a good choice. Each forkful brings new textures and excitement, thanks to berries, cucumbers, candied cashews, apples, feta cheese and a tangy raspberry vinaigrette. For a punch of protein, add chicken, tuna salad or bacon (always a winner!). $10.35 (+$2.50 for protein), 6610 Folsom-Auburn Road, Folsom, 916-987-8001, coffeerepublicfolsom.com I’d never had Sicilian-style pizza until a recent trip to Dominick’s NY Pizza and Deli, and now there’s no turning back. One bite of their Sicilian Cheese Pizza, and I was hooked. Cut into squares with a thick, crispy, olive oily crust that’s golden-brown on the outside and airy on the inside, with marinara sauce so good you’ll want to eat it by the spoonful and freshshredded melty mozzarella, it’s worth adding to your food bucket list. $3.25 (slice), $21.95 (whole pie); 187 Blue Ravine Road, Folsom, 916-351-0900, www.dominicksfolsom.com No one does garlic-anything better than The River Thai Cuisine. Order the Garlic and Pepper, which comes with your choice of meat, tofu or veggies (I always opt for chicken), all tossed in a black pepper gravy with crisp golden pieces of whole garlic in it. Yes, it tastes as good as it sounds! $10.95, 424 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, 916-983-7388

Thai Paradise Jarunee Fleming 2770 E. Bidwell St., Ste. 100 | Folsom 916-984-8988 www.thaiparadisefolsom.com Jarunee studied food preparation and cooking as an apprentice to her uncle, who was the Executive Chef at the 5-star Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. She has been a chef for 15 years and loves making people happy with her food. “I love to cook and see people enjoying my food,” Jarunee says. Her favorite dishes to prepare are Thai Curries. The most challenging part of her job as a chef is managing the restaurant. Judging by how busy Thai Paradise is, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, Jarunee and her husband, Alex are handling the challenge well. When Jarunee is not cooking, you can find her enjoying growing her own flowers. The Thai Paradise recipes are straight from the Royal Thai Palace, with daily lunch and dinner specials. They offer authentic curries, rice dishes, noodle soups and noodle stir fry bowls. Catering is their specialty, and they are constantly updating their menu to feature fresh, new, and delicious Thai dishes.

Marshall Honored for Pulmonary Embolism Treatment Marshall Hospital produces quality results, even without a large amount of resources.

ABOUT MARSHALL MEDICAL CENTER Marshall Medical Center is an independent, nonprofit community healthcare provider located in the heart of the Sierra Foothills between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe. Marshall Medical Center includes Marshall Hospital, a fully accredited acute care

That’s how Al Massey, MD, described recent accomplishments he helped Marshall earn. HealthGrades®, a leading consumer resource helping the public make informed decisions, recognized the hospital with five stars for superior treatment of pulmonary embolism, a clot that denies blood flow to the lungs. For three years running (2015-17), Marshall been named among HealthGrades’® Top 10% for Overall Pulmonary Services and awarded its Pulmonary Care Excellence Award.

“We don’t have all the specialists and the resources of a large hospital system,” said Dr. Massey, a pulmonologist, in between treating patients inside Marshall’s new Intensive Care Unit. “What we do have is a small team that communicates well. We have all the good aspects of a small community hospital: good communication and a dedicated staff.”

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is not a singular event. It combines failures in key parts of the respiratory and circulatory systems. It happens when a clot develops somewhere in the body, often the leg, before traveling to a lung artery. When this happens, patients may feel chest pain, shortness of breath and irregular heartbeat – serious enough to send them to the emergency room. A major health issue requires expert care and Dr. Massey singled out the expertise of Marshall’s Emergency Department. Marshall’s critical care staff has utilized |

A healthy lifestyle, one that includes regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, goes a long way in preventing pulmonary embolism. Existing medical conditions and risk factors, such as smoking and obesity, may increase its likelihood.

tools and x-ray equipment, which Marshall invested in when Dr. Beamer joined the practice. As a trained sports medicine surgeon with focused training in the technique, Dr. Beamer brings this unique procedure to the region.

If you are suffering from pain in your ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, or back and you have: • difficulty performing daily functions • pain in muscles, tendons, or joints that lasts for more than a few days • swelling or bruising around the joint or the location of an injury • limited range of motion • joint deformity • signs of infection including inflammation, fever or redness then it might be time to get a referral to Marshall Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. Orthopedist Taylor Vance, MD, recommends a conservative approach to treatment. But when prescription

medications, reductions in activity or physical therapy fail, surgery is the best option. “When it is warranted, it’s very important to perform a surgical repair of the injured structure,” said Dr. Vance, who is fellowship-trained in orthopedic sports medicine. Options include minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery for knees, rotator cuff or tendon repairs. An arthroscope is a small device equipped with a video camera. Surgeons use the scope to view the injured region and perform surgery through small incisions instead of open surgery. “The benefits may include decreased postoperative pain,” Dr. Vance said. It’s faster, safer and far less painful alternative and commonly done as an outpatient procedure. Marshall’s newest orthopedic sports medicine specialist, Brandon Beamer, MD, is one of a few surgeons in Northern California trained to perform arthroscopic surgery of the hip joint. Hip arthroscopy has traditionally been viewed as difficult because of the hip’s anatomy. The procedure requires the use of a specialized operating table, surgical

When chronic joint pain calls for a more serious approach, then joint replacement is an option. Marshall Orthopedics specializes in hip, knee ankle and shoulder replacements. Marshall’s surgeons specialize in replacing hips using the direct anterior approach, a less invasive course allowing the surgeon to work between the muscles and tissues, sparing them from trauma. Advances in joint techniques mean patients can anticipate the joint replacement will last them the rest of our lives. Dr. Vance said the relief patients feel post-surgery goes beyond a freedom from pain. “People often remark, ‘I wish I had done this sooner,’” he said.

hat’s the difference between a good or a bad day for someone battling an illness, a handicap or a traumatic situation? For some, it’s the affection they get from a friendly, four-legged friend. Dogs provide more than unconditional love – they offer proven medical benefits that include:  Reducing the presence of the stress hormone, enabling people to better cope with stressful situations  Lowering heart rate. “We have great clinics and clinicians at Marshall Medical Center,” says Wendy Goossen, Director of Cancer Services for Marshall Medical Center, “but I felt we were missing something in the healing arts. I thought pet therapy would be helpful in our patient care and dogs are great. They provide affection and comfort and have a way to help people open up and express themselves.” Max, a three-year-old hypoallergenic Labradoodle, serves as the Marshall Cancer Center’s therapy dog. arshall Foundation recently granted $10,000 for the new El Dorado High School Brief Intervention Program (BIP), an approach for substance using adolescents.

El Dorado County’s teen drug abuse death rate – 17.6 per 100,000 deaths – is 63 percent higher than the state average. It’s an alarming statistic, one that needs immediate attention. The BIP program will involve both an outside prevention educator and counseling specialist. Each will assess participating students and coordinate with school staff, all while teaching healthy coping skills to both students and parents alike. With a goal of keeping students and their families on the right path, the mentors will also follow up meetings and activities.

Tribute to a Friend A Healing Garden on the Horizon for Marshall Cancer Center

T

he practice of introducing nature into healthcare settings has grown significantly as research has demonstrated that therapeutic landscapes have a profound impact on patients and their families (as well as on healthcare workers); patients experience less pain and stress and their overall emotional states improve.

The proposed Marshall Cancer Healing Garden will be located in Cameron Park, framed by the Marshall Hematology/Oncology offices adjacent to the Cancer Resource Center. The Healing Garden will be dedicated in the memory of Janet Nachtman, a longtime El Dorado County resident and wife of former Marshall CEO Frank Nachtman. She died of cancer in 2003. “It is because of her vision and passion to find a better pathway for cancer patients that the Cancer Center exists today,” said Judie Stewart, Janet’s close friend and chair of the Healing Garden campaign.

Left-to-right: Cancer Center Healing Garden Cabinet members Wendy Goossen, Janet Gillett and Judie Stewart pose behind a picture of Janet Nachtman

The Campaign Cabinet, comprised of Janet’s friends, seeks to bring remembrance to a valiant and brave spirit. Janet was an exceptional artist and brilliant gardener. In one of her last colorful paintings, she depicted her struggle

with cancer with a self-depiction of a determined and courageous ride. The cabinet is enthusiastic about helping with this project because Janet was caring, compassionate and concerned about improving the journey of all cancer patients.

Cancer Center Expanding — How to Help A living tribute will be created with the design of the garden expected to open in 2018. It will benefit the needs of cancer patients well into the future.

SPECIAL AD SECTION

The result is a quiet satisfaction for patients, families and healthcare staff. People often describe their time in a garden as “lifeenhancing” and “restorative.” It can be a place where stress melts away, life slows down and we feel a sense of renewal that comes with our connection to nature in our landscapes.

Q-&-A: Learn more about Marshall Foundation’s New Trustees The Marshall Foundation for Community Health Board of Trustees is a sample of our citizens’ desire for community service. We asked two members – Placerville attorney Kevin James and Kathy Witherow, executive assistant at the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors – what that means to them. Where does your heart for service and inspiration to help others come from? Kathy Witherow: I was a “band mom” or “soccer mom,” volunteering for events when my children were young. As a professional, I joined the Rotary of El Dorado Hills thinking Kathy Witherow it was good for business and discovered it has nothing to do with business. It’s all about helping your community. I called my Rotary friends “my peeps” and they became an important part of my life. My husband and I – we’re both on the Drive for Marshall Golf Committee – understand what it means to commit and give to your community. Kevin James: It comes from my family background. My dad was a doctor. My grandfather and great-grandfather were doctors. I learned to be service-minded and communityoriented. I’m sort of the black sheep of the family for my career choices, but it was ingrained in me to give back. The best way I can do that to promote health. How did you get connected with Marshall Foundation?

KW: I’ve known Executive Director Karen Good for some time. We kept bumping into each other at various events in the community. One day she asked me to lunch, and it was at that point that she talked to me about being a member on the Board of Trustees for Marshall Foundation. I was surprised and honored. KJ: I opened my law office in Placerville about a year and a half ago, and wanted to get involved with the community. I knew the Marshall Foundation makes a significant contribution to developing health in our community, so it was a natural for me. I wanted to get involved in the community to give back, and coming from a medical family, health has always been an interest of mine. KW: As Chair of Strategic Planning, I would like to provide support and educate the community on what the Foundation does. Some mistakenly think the Marshall Foundation and Marshall Hospital are one in the same. The Foundation supports the larger community in different ways from the hospital. Prevention and good healthy habits are passions of mine. I am very excited about the direction both the Foundation and the hospital are heading in these areas. KJ: I’m on the Finance and Planned Giving Committees. Hacienda Del Rio

Much to Taco ’Bout

by LORN RANDALL // photos by DANTE FONTANA

Opposite Page: Shrimp Diablo Top: Chicken Flauta Left: Deep-Fried Ice Cream Right: Chile Verde

If you haven’t been to Hacienda Del Rio in Historic Folsom in a while because you thought it was closed, Owner Chris Corda wants you to know they’re open and better than ever. During a two-year closure—due to a fire that ripped through the 40-year-old kitchen—the Hacienda engaged in some necessary R and R (remodeling and reopening). The results are immediately noticeable; the “L”-shaped bar that once shared space with the dining room has been replaced with a beautiful rectangular centerpiece bar, replete with flat screens on all sides that serve an expanded bar seating area, and modernized lighting and décor to boot. Whether you choose The grilled shrimp, t o e at i n t h e d i n i ng bathed in a fiery tomato room, bar or outdoor deck, a chilled pitcher of sauce with a touch of margaritas and basket Mexican oregano and hint of complimentar y of sweetness, got my nose chips with house-made running and my taste salsa await s you. Tr y t he c h ic ken f laut a buds begging for more. appet izer to get your lunch or dinner rolling. The hand-rolled flour tortillas—filled with seasoned, shredded chicken—are lightly fried and seriously delicious. Though their famous fajitas sounded tempting, I couldn’t resist the chile verde, featuring tender chunks of pork simmered with mild chiles, onions and tomatillos in a tortilla bowl alongside rice and refried beans. Another of my go-to Tex-Mex-style entrées is shrimp diablo,

and Hacienda’s didn’t disappoint. The grilled shrimp, bathed in a fiery tomato sauce with a touch of Mexican oregano and hint of sweetness, got my nose running and my taste buds begging for more. Warm tortillas (corn or flour) helped keep the heat just below four alarm. If your sweet tooth is feeling left out, you could follow the recommendation server-bartender Stacy gave me—deep-fried ice cream. I had to try it, if only for a couple of bites. I’d like to tell you it’s not really deep-fried, but I’d be lying. A sphere of vanilla ice cream, coated in something reminiscent of cookie dough, was given a quick plunge in a hot oil spa then quartered and topped with whipped cream and caramel syrup. It’s a perfect reason to bring your kids—you can all share one, thereby protecting them from too much of the horribly sinful goodness. T-Crepes

// Running errands and getting groceries just got a lot more exciting with the opening of T-Crepes—an eatery sited in the Safeway shopping center that’s revolutionizing mealtime. My new routine consists of picking up my essentials then rewarding myself by stopping in for a sweet, delicate and tasty, Japanese-style crepe. On my first trip, I was greeted with a clean, bright interior—thanks to sparkling tables, baby blue walls and wood accents—and a smiling face at the register. Their menu is simple; pick between a build-your-own sweet crepe or a prefixed savory one. I settled on a classic—Strawberries, Bananas and Nutella, along with a Fresh Strawberry Tea (various boba teas and blended beverages are also available). It was presented to me like an ice cream cone, with multiple layers of thin crepe-y goodness laced with my fruits of choice and smothered in Nutella. Although I didn’t order anything savory, I sure savored every bite while sipping my just-sweet-enough tea. Next time I’ll spice it up with a scoop of ice cream (from Sacramento favorite Gunther’s) or smoked salmon; or maybe venture to the snack side of their menu, which features fried delights like popcorn chicken, egg rolls and sweet potato fries. Whatever you fancy, your taste buds are in for a treat. T-Crepes, 1870 Prairie City Road, Suite 300, Folsom. 916-597-2787, t-crepes.com.

On the hunt for a subsational sandwich? These are Style staffers’ favorite orders when the lunch bell rings. In no particular order… “Despite its name, the Angry Irishman at MAIN STREET MELTERS makes me very happy. The combo of corned beef, pastrami, hot pepper spread, cream cheese, Havarti, grilled onions and jalapeños on sliced sourdough—all grilled to ooey-gooey perfection—makes for a spicy, filling meal that’s even better when paired with their beautiful, petfriendly patio.” mainstreetmelters.com

“Served on a freshly baked French roll, with tender slim-sliced sirloin steak and melted Swiss cheese, the Roasted Sirloin Dip at BISTRO 33 melts in your mouth. What’s more, the au jus is house-made and has hidden flavors that add even more flavor to the alreadyaddicting sandwich.” bistro33edh.com

“The Rat Trap at NEWCASTLE CHEESE SHOP curbs my craving for a quality sub every time. Topped with a hodgepodge of multiple meats and cheeses, plus fresh veggies, it may very well be the best sandwich in the state. Grab one before a day on the Placer Wine Trail or a hike in Auburn, and you’ll be set to jet till dinnertime.” 916-663-3704

“It’s hard to beat the fresh meats and cheeses and friendly staff at BETTER FOODS DELI in Roseville. Family owned and operated since 1970, they’re clearly doing something right! My favorite is the Cajun Turkey on Dutch crunch (made fresh by Truckee Sourdough Company) with a side of house-made macaroni salad. Talk about yummy, down-to-earth goodness.” betterfoodsdeli.com

“FIREHOUSE SUBS not only satisfies the community by giving back, but satisfies my appetite as well. You can’t go wrong with their Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket, featuring USDA choice brisket that’s smoked for more than 16 hours and oh-so-tender, alongside melty cheddar, mayo and Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. My mouth waters just thinking about it.” firehousesubs.com

“The Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana at

DOMINICK'S NY PIZZA AND DELI is ridiculous, as in ridiculously good. Fresh, chewy bread is topped with a thick cut of breaded chicken that's smothered in mozzarella and baked until the cheese is nice and brown, before being bathed in house-made marinara sauce. Mraz is a rapidly growing, award-winning brewery located in El Dorado Hills (be sure to check out their All Sour Day on March 4 and Bourbon Barrel-Aged Day on March 11). The American Brown Ale was originally only going to be brewed once, but it was such a hit that they've decided to keep it around. Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Before I moved to Folsom, I was the owner of Shannon’s Lake Tahoe Day Spa. My clients who used to come to Tahoe for services begged me to open a shop down here, so I opened a small boutique skin care business on Sutter Street and was introduced to body sugaring by my colleagues in the beauty industry. I fell in love with how smooth my skin was after a sugaring treatment and how much less it hurt than wax. I knew that if I loved to be sugared, my clients would be grateful if I mastered the technique, too. I never dreamed that hair removal would become the service I became known for in the Sacramento area.

We are a full-service design firm with the best construction crew in the business, and offer remodeling, renovation home flips, commercial design, a color specialist, new home construction, additions, flooring and window treatments, plus furniture and décor accessories. Our professional team has been featured on TV and in publications. I had always been extremely creative, and give credit to my private education where I received the initial training and developed a love of the arts and an eye for color and composition and design. Early on in my career, I was a guidance counselor; after being published in one local design show, Fabulous Finishes took off! I received corporate sponsors, and the rest is history. I’m so blessed to have a company—located in the community I call home—that’s been in business for over 26 years, and still going strong!

Why is your staff the best in the business? We are proud that we won for best waxing category in KCRA’s A-List—and we don’t wax, we sugar! Our staff is all licensed and certified in their craft—be it sugaring, lash extensions, facials or massage. Our skin care specialists, Tiffany and Ashley, personalize their treatments to clients' specific needs and focus on results. Our massage therapist, Julie, is a true bodywork therapist. She is sought out by locals to investigate their chronic problems and help them alleviate pain.

What’s your biggest job perk? Our awesome clients and getting to make people happy every day. One of our clients told me she refers to us as the Steel Magnolias of Folsom, because of our friendly environment and genuine care for people. What a compliment!

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? We're looking forward to our new neighbor, Out of Bounds Brewing Company, to be our new favorite spot to eat and have a delicious cold craft beer. We love supporting the local community and its business owners; plus, to sit by a fire pit and have delicious libations will be fun!

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My parents—all four of them. They are successful entrepreneurs and taught me to have a strong work ethic, creativity, morals, leadership, compassion and faith; what’s more, they’ve given me the guidance and foundation to be the successful woman I am today.

What’s your biggest job perk? The flexibility to be with my husband and travel, in addition to working with fabulous people and making their dreams come true.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Visconti’s Ristorante. It’s a family-owned business that treats you like family, and their food is the best!

And finally, customer service is…? The most important attribute in my firm. We all take great pride in making sure our clients have the most amazing and over-the-top experience working with us. “Creating beautiful environments for people to work and live in” has been the key to a successful business for over 26 years.

DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?

In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Is the Prize Right? The Truth About Trophies by TOM MAILEY // illustrated by DAVID NORBY

Recently it’s become fashionable to criticize “participation trophies.” According to some, they’re to blame for nothing less than weakening the resolve of entire generations, putting the very foundations of our country at risk. To which I say, really? Personally, I see nothing wrong with handing out trophies, ribbons or, heck, little gilded lollipops at the end of a season. Now, I’m not talking about older kids—high school or even youth sports’ upper levels. But letting a six-, seven- or eight-year-old know their participation meant something…? I have zero problem with that. I freely admit though that five seasons coaching Little League does not make me an expert, so I asked a few sporting-type folks I know and Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning respect. Show on New I started with Matt Goodell. For years, Country 105.1, email him at tnvmailey@ he was president of Roseville West Little gmail.com, or follow him on Twitter League. Good coach, too. In his mind, not @kncitom. only do participation trophies not give a kid any sense of entitlement long-term—they WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? don’t even do it short-term. Don’t miss Style’s “20 Under 20: Local “The participation trophy has ZERO Youth Raising the impact on how a season goes [or] the athletic Bar.” ability and growth of the individual …ZERO,” he said. “Kids know who was the best, the

82

least, the natural…they don’t need a coach or hardware to tell them that.” What they do instead, he suggests, is acknowledge a child’s commitment to something bigger than themselves for one of the first times in their lives. Football coach Casey Taylor, recently of powerhouse Del Oro but now at Capital Christian, doesn’t think participation trophies lend a sense of entitlement either. Instead, he’s more concerned with pay-to-play competitive (or “comp”) sports teams giving many kids—and parents— unrealistic ideas of a young athlete’s ability. A youngster, he says, “might be on a comp team, but that doesn’t mean they’re good.” At the youth level, he’d like to see more emphasis put on learning—and simply learning to enjoy—a game, and he thinks parents and youth coaches “get too caught up in wins and losses. It’s gotta be more about the game, the journey.” Sports, he says, are not only a chance to “learn life lessons like self-discipline and working with others,” but they’re also something to simply enjoy well into adult life at a recreational level. A slightly different take on participation trophies comes from Jason Harper, founder of the high school sports motivational program Character Combine. He’s mostly not a fan. “At entry-level, I can understand,” he says, comparing them to medals earned for completing a marathon. But even then, he thinks it’s important that the “why” be explained, otherwise, it “creates an idea that as long as you show up, you’ll be rewarded, and that’s not how life really is. You have to show up and compete or you’re not going to play…or be employed.” And I don’t disagree…for older kids. But at the youngest levels, kids participate for different reasons: some because they want to, some because they think they might want to, and quite a few because their parents want them to. Regardless, that’s as it should be—you won’t know unless you try, right? And to me, try is a word that doesn’t get enough credit. Can you remember the last time you tried something new? Something really outside your comfort zone? Me either. Now, think about a first, second or third grader. For many of them, that’s exactly what they’re doing. That sort of effort should be rewarded, because at that age how they did doesn’t matter. That they did, does. There’s your “why.” But there’s one other reason that didn’t occur to me until I contacted Matt Goodell. “It’s funny you asked about that,” he said in an initial email exchange. “My 15-year-old just yesterday pulled out his trophies—participation to individual accolades—from a stored container and placed as many on his window sill that he could fit. I asked him why he did it, and he said ‘I don’t know.’ Typical teenager response, right?” But, he added, “as we sat there staring at them, I realized the appreciation he has for every one of them.” Each, Goodell realized, “tells a story, a memory, a moment in time…” And that’s a pretty decent reason, too. I’M VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. Dr. Almonte and staff were very personable and comforting as I was nervous on my first visit and didn’t know anything about plastic surgery except I knew I wanted to improve the way I looked. Dr. Almonte was very informative and I learned so much. He put me at ease and thoroughly explained different procedures and options. From there our journey to my new and young appearance began....lower eyelid, upper eyelid, mini facelift and mini tummy tuck. I love the way I look now. I look RESTED, REFRESH and YOUNGER. LOVE IT! Thank you Dr. Almonte for your wonderful work!
