id you know that national pet month falls in May every year? While we might have missed the mark just a tad, this month we’re making up for it with an OMGso-cute homage to our local pets… and their people. If you don’t crack a smile, or manage to utter a giggle or two after flipping the pages of Style’s annual People & Their Pets pictorial with bonus quotes from pet owners (new addition this year!)—you should immediately try locating your sense of humor. “Until one No matter how has loved bad my day may be going, when I return an animal, a home to our two part of one’s pit bulls with smilsoul remains ing, teeth-baring unawakened.”— mugs and wagging Anatole France tales—I can’t help but feel as if Calgon just took me away. Our family simply would not be complete without them, and they teach the value of unconditional love on a daily basis. I can never stay mad at either of them for more than a minute…even when they drag my favorite sandals onto the lawn for a cleaning. Oftentimes, the media inaccurately characterizes pit bulls—instead of their irresponsible owners—as violent. It is for this reason that I feel compelled to counter this with the fact that I have had the pleasure of owning pit bulls for most of my adult life, and they are all the same—deeply loving, fiercely loyal, and always eager to please their people. Mine seem to think they are lap kittens. Now that I’m off my soapbox, the takeaway this month is probably something most of us can all agree upon: Our pets—furry, feathered, gilled and scaled—enrich our lives (and hearts) with joy, making the world a better place in which to live. Until next month, or as long as your life obliges, aspire to be as good of a companion to your human friends as our animal friends are to us. • — Desiree P.S. If you haven’t found your furever friend, don’t miss this month’s “The 10 Spot” which lists area pet rescues.

asktheexperts Q:
Are there specific preventative measures to avert memory loss, especially for seniors?
A:
Dementia—the advancement of memory loss—is a set of symptoms associated with diseases that affect the brain. Eating a healthy diet, being physically active and staying socially connected prevents memory loss. Brain exercises like crossword puzzles, board games, chess and other similar activities that require multi-step thought processes keep our minds sharp. Cognitive Therapeutics Method (CTM) is also used to slow the progression of degenerative neurocognitive disorders. CTM provides cognitive rehabilitation with intervention activities and emphasizes lifestyle changes to positively influence the aging process and promote good brain health. —Glenn Krakow, Owner/Senior Resource Advisor Home Care Assistance 2222 Francisco Drive, Suite 520, El Dorado Hills 916-358-3801, homecareassistanceeldoradoco.com
Q:
How can I maintain my dog’s dental hygiene when she doesn’t like having her teeth brushed?
A:
Photo © annette shaff/fotolia.com.
Brushing your pet’s teeth is necessary to maintain good dental hygiene. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and flavorful pet
toothpaste, then sit or kneel on the floor with them and lift the upper lip and brush lightly, using small circular movements, angling bristles to reach their gum line. Start by brushing a few teeth, mainly the canine and adjacent teeth, then stop. As your pet cooperates more, continue to brush additional teeth. Reward your pet with praise and treats, creating a positive experience for them. Every six to 12 months, pets should have their teeth professionally cleaned—to remove tartar—and polished. —Barb Poteet, Pet Dental Hygienist The Natural Pet Tooth Fairy 2780 East Bidwell Street, Folsom 1-888-508-9904, naturalpettoothfairy.com August 2015 - stylefedh.com 9

Q&A Q: What comes to you naturally? A: Technological and mechanical abilities—I don’t know why, but it’s always been easy for me. Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve? A: Everyone gets a trophy. If we teach our children that no matter the effort they put into something—or rather if they win or lose—that they still get a trophy, we aren’t preparing them for the real world. We are creating adults who want a reward for mediocre performance.

l Dorado Hills Fire Chief Dave Rober ts wit n e sse d h is first emergency situation long before he started working at the fire department. Previously he worked as an electrical engineer, and one day, the worst happened—a hydrogen leak was discovered in his building. As a member of the company’s emergency response team, Roberts was tasked with helping everyone evacuate safely. Fortunately, no one was harmed, and the hydrogen was successfully contained. Roberts left the experience realizing that he might be destined for something more than a nine-to-five job. Soon after, he applied to be a volunteer firefighter, and the rest is history. Roberts has been a member of the El Dorado Hills Fire Department for over 12 stylefedh.com - August 2015
two decades now. As fire chief, his biggest goal is to provide excellent customer service to the community—service that often exceeds what’s expected of a first responder. He recalls one time his team hung Christmas lights for a man w h o h a d b e e n i n j u re d falling from a ladder. “I’m part of an amazing team of folks,” he enthuses. “We try to always go above and beyond the call of duty.” When he isn’t putting out fires—metaphorically or literally—Roberts spends time with his wife, Sondra, his five adult children and three grandchildren. He also enjoys crosscountry trips on his Harley Davidson—a red and gold special edition built for firefighters after 9/11. — Amber Foster

here’s always something brewing at the Folsom Senior Center, whether it’s a fresh cup of coffee or a lively game of Wii! The Center, located at 48 Natoma Street (between Folsom City Hall and the Folsom Police Department), is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Anyone 55 and older is welcome—Folsom residency is not a requirement. If you’ve never visited, or it’s been a while, we welcome you to stop by. “It’s the place to be if you’re lonely,” says Marge Diener, who’s been a regular at the Center since it opened in 2007. “It keeps you young!” adds Bunny Pringle, a newcomer. The Center’s Senior Lounge serves as the hub for daily, free activities, from the popular Off-Key Singers group and organized games (Wii, bingo and pinochle) to book discussions, movies, a monthly live band performance and more. Says another Senior Center regular Nancy Nelson, “The entertainment and games are great!” The lounge also has a stock of books, magazines, board games and puzzles. Those who enjoy participating in an organized group are invited to join the Senior Citizens Club, which meets twice monthly at the Center for lunch, games and occasional guest speakers. The Center also provides space for seniors and caregivers to meet with a variety of community support services and agencies. A hot lunch program is available by reservation through Meals on Wheels; lunches are delivered and served at the Center at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday—seniors may also provide their own sack lunch. Folsom Parks and Recreation offers a wide selection of classes for seniors, too, including fine arts, ceramics, yoga, Zumba, the popular “Walk and Talk” guided trail walks, guitar lessons, driver’s safety and more. Many of the classes are ongoing; some require a fee and others are free. Free educational workshops are also offered, covering topics ranging from medication safety to estate planning. The life expectancy for a shelter animal is 72 hours, and the number of dogs put down in shelters each day is 5,500. Those numbers are according to An Act of Dog, a nonprofit started by Mark Barone, an artist who hand painted 5,500 photos of dogs to help put the number into perspective. Proceeds from the prints (anactofdog.org) help fund the lifesaving work of various rescue groups and no-kill animal shelters. For 10 local rescues, where you can pick up a furever companion of your own, read on.

The Posh Bagel
W
hen thinking of their local bagel shop, many imagine a crisp, toasted bagel smothered in cream cheese— resulting in a delicious yet eloquent mix of crunch and “yum.” I am one of those people. Little did I know the many more gourmet possibilities until I entered The Posh Bagel. Overwhelmed by the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked goods and a menu set to please the local bagel connoisseur, I came to my California senses and ordered the hot Turkey Avocado Melt. Greeted with an epicurean masterpiece, I was hesitant to touch the work of art yet anxious to consume the warm bagel stuffed with farmers’ market-like fresh tomatoes, onions and sprouts and layered with ripe avocado, classic turkey and melted jack cheese, which provided a creamy texture and additional mouthwatering flavor. I sunk my teeth into the warm sensation of the sandwich in the café-like setting and washed it down with Posh’s very own Bubble Tea, a delightful cold drink with signature boba tapioca pearls mixed right in. Posh Bagel is located conveniently on the corner of East Bidwell and Blue Ravine in Folsom, accessible from the Parkway Trails midway through your morning or afternoon stroll. or thousands of years, tea has been used for its medicinal purposes, making it a smart option for daily drinking. “All tea has benefits,” explains Laura Owens, owner and CEO of Owens Acres, LLC, in Placerville, and certified master herbalist and certified holistic nutritionist. “All teas are high in antioxidants, phenols, minerals and vitamins. It’s also anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic—meaning it reduces the rate that cells mutate.” “All true tea is derived from the same plant, the Camellia sinensis,” says Tamalisa Carlson, MPH, RD, a clinical dietitian at Marshall Medical Center in Shingle Springs. “White, green, oolong and black tea are differentiated during processing,” she explains. “The leaves are either taken straight from the plant, as in green tea, or they’re left out in the sun to ferment until they turn black.” While there’s no firm evidence—yet—that drinking tea will prevent cancer in humans, drinking up to two cups per day should be part of your healthful lifestyle. “It contributes to your daily fluid needs, has no calories, promotes heart health, reduces inflammation, protects your skin FOR STYLE’S from sun damage and may even prevent cancer,” Carlson says. 5 FAVORITE “Steeping tea for three to five minutes, to your preference, and TEAS, squeezing the bag will release the most polyphenols. favorite type of tea, since all [varieties] have some benefit.” Teas or herbal teas (which are not true teas, but rather an infusion of fruits, herbs, flowers, roots, spices or other plants) are a great way to begin your day. “They provide much needed hydration and nutrients from your eight-hour sleep period and really help jump-start your body for the day,” Owens says. “Non-caffeinated teas are relaxing and soothing and are best at night to help you wind down and drift off to sleep naturally.” Naoko Tsunoda, Teavana’s tea authority and director of tea development, drinks a cup of matcha green tea as soon as she gets to work every day. “Matcha has so many [health] benefits and keeps me focused after drinking it. Our matcha has floral overnotes with a rich, creamy body and sweet finish,” Tsunoda says. “Straight green teas have a clean, delicious taste, and when paired with other fruits or spices, the flavor excites your taste buds and provides an enjoyable treat,” she adds. Both green and white teas are the least-processed type of tea, and they’re the richest sources of antioxidants. “White teas have an unmatched subtlety, complexity, natural sweetness and delicacy,” Tsunoda says. “Black teas are full-bodied and strong—they taste great alone or with milk and sugar, and they make great iced tea. Oolong teas are full-bodied with a flavorful fragrance and sweet aroma. Most people commonly recognize oolong as the tea served in Chinese restaurants.” Herbal teas can be a substitute to caffeinated teas and “used as a medicinal alternative for common issues such as headaches and migraines, an upset stomach, colic, weight loss, insomnia, PMS, menopause issues, blood pressure, acne, gout, cold and flu, allergies, cancers/tumors, and a long list of other common complaints,” Owens says. “For health and wellness, it’s best to have a few varieties on hand for both children and adults.”

Hills-based 3Strands Global Inc., a nonprofit that exists to combat human trafficking through employment, education and engagement initiatives. Through an educational program called Break Free, the organization has already
reached 10,000 students in 30 high schools. Break Free is educating both adults and children on how to recognize tactics trafficking predators use to lure and coerce their victims, how to protect themselves, and raise awareness about the existence of human trafficking. “We emphasize education and empowerment rather than fear to create a generation of kids less susceptible to victimization,” says Ashlie Bryant, co-founder and VP of Development and Outreach at 3Strands. “Trafficking is a crime that needs to be recognized and dis-

cussed if it’s going to be stopped.” Nationally, more than 100,000 children are at risk of being sexually exploited, and trafficking is estimated to be a $9.8 billion industry. The average age of victims is only 12, but statistics show people of any age—male or female may be at risk, and that’s through no fault of their own: Traffickers prey on our vulnerabilities. “These people are experts at pretending to be exactly what their victims need, when they need it,” Bryant says. “That could be a friend, a mom, a big brother, a boyfriend…anything that gets their victims to trust them.” It may take months to earn that trust and loyalty. Once it’s earned, however, the criminals have already hooked their victims, physically and mentally. Being exploited becomes a “safe place” for victims, where failing to do what they’re asked or told can lead to danger or violence. As a result, it’s common for people who’ve been freed from trafficking to go right back to it. For that reason, one of Break Free’s other major programs is the Break Free Run (formerly Run for Courage), which raises money to fight human trafficking, and help restore victims’ lives. Bryant started the Run For Courage with friends Vicky Zito, Amy Johnson and Stephanie Loos, after Zito’s teenage daughter was kidnapped in broad daylight and trafficked for eight days before being rescued by the FBI. All money raised from the runs—now held in Solano, Folsom, Oakland and San Diego—goes toward education and restoring victims’ lives. In the past five years, the group has raised more than $800,000 for these efforts. The next Folsom Break Free Run is September 26, and Bryant says participating is a great way to get engaged in fighting trafficking. “When people learn about this crime, they become outraged and say ‘this is not OK,’ and we emphasize that everyone can do something to help fight it.”

which hues are you? Creating a Whole House Color Palette by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID
I
t seems simple, but picking a paint color is one of the biggest obstacles my clients have. When they realize they’re really picking an overall palette, they’re positively paralyzed. I’ve been part of the process in thousands of homes, and I have to remind clients that it really is simpler than we think. Answer a few questions, make some quick decisions, and then narrow those decisions down to an ultimate choice.
Flipping through magazines and websites can be a big help when you’re looking for inspiration, but first, take a minute to answer two important questions: What are your favorite colors, and how do you want to feel in your home? Are you looking for a serene oasis or a fun, funky vibe? Finding yourself on that spectrum and considering the colors most likely to take you there is where you want to start. We react to color on such a gut level that instinct will serve you well. If you’re really having a tough time, head to the closet and note the colors of your favorite clothes. Check out the bedding and art on the walls. You’ll be surprised how quickly you see a pattern that resonates. Choose three colors to get started.
WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS YOU CAN’T CONTROL? Next, factor in the elements of your architecture and design that you can’t change. Cabinets, carpet, floors and furniture are 38 stylefedh.com - August 2015
TEST! TEST! TEST! more permanent fixtures, and it’s easier, and more affordable, to paint around them rather than remodeling just to match the paint. Now, which of your three colors comes off the list? Decide quickly, be brutal, and keep moving.
WHICH ROOMS CAN YOU SEE FROM WHICH ROOMS? Even if you’re not working with an open floor plan, you want to consider everything in your line of sight as you choose colors for particular rooms. This won’t necessarily result in removing any of the colors from the list, but you may end up choosing a different tint or shade that you like for another room in your sight line.
COMMIT (AT LEAST TO A LIST OF THREE) Time to make a call. Start with your three main paint chips, and then choose one or two of its neighbors on either side to give you a spectrum of the colors you
This is crucial. Pick up an eight-ounce sample of those colors and brush some on every wall intended for. Depending on the light, one color will often look like two when painted on different walls. Live with them for at least three days—viewing them morning, noon and night—again noting the difference in shades under different light sources, and start narrowing. If you’re still having trouble deciding, vow to eliminate one color a day. Remember, you can always change paint, and you’ve chosen colors you actually like. At this point, it’s a safe bet that you’re going to love whatever you choose!

eady to hit the road with your pet? Before you go, you have a lot to consider. “Anxiety is the biggest hurdle,” says Dr. Brad Cahoon, DVM, CVA, and owner of Veterinary Healing Center of El Dorado Hills and Folsom, who suggests exposing the pet to things she’ll experience while traveling, such as being in a crate or being around new people and environments. “Many animals just don’t like traveling in planes, trains and automobiles,” says Bob Campbell, owner of sBarkles, a do-it-yourself dog wash store with holistic, healthy dog and cat food in Folsom, who recommends a product called Rescue Remedy for Pets as a “natural stress relief.” The most important thing to remember when traveling with pets—whether camping, going to the beach or to the city—is planning ahead with your itinerary in mind. “Stopping for dinner? Where will Fido stay while you eat?” asks Jason Davis, The Dog Guy® of Folsom Dog Resort and Training Center. “One of the biggest challenges is being able to do the things you want to do with your pets [there],” says Karen Petree of Happy Feet Pet Sitting, noting that while many hotels and restaurants are becoming pet friendly, not all venues are suitable for them. “While on a recent trip to Florida, I noticed some boardwalks and beaches weren’t pet friendly,” she says. “Who will watch your dog while you do go somewhere that isn’t pet friendly?” Other pet owners can be great resources when it comes to getting advice and travel recommendations. “When traveling with dogs, people really need to research where they’re going,” says Erin Selover, owner of Wagger’s Pet Spa in Folsom, who recommends checking websites like bringfido.com to find petfriendly stops on your trip. Selover, who often travels with her golden retriever Jolie, also reminds pet owners to know their dog’s behavior. “If the dog is not socialized with other pets, that can be a problem,” she says.

Road Trip Tips

IF A ROAD TRIP IS YOUR PLAN, HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
1
TAKE TEST DRIVES Get your dog used to being in the car, especially if your pet is a skittish traveler. “By taking smaller trips and continually rewarding and reinforcing good behaviors, your pet will eventually associate trips in the car with a fun, positive and rewarding time,” says Campbell. “Utilizing a special treat that they normally don’t receive can be of assistance in these instances as well.”

PACK THE RIGHT SUPPLIES
El Dorado Pet Club Shingle Springs 530-676-4442 eldoradopetclub.com
Fill a bag with essentials for your pet. Selover recommends a travel bowl, toys, food and water. Also, “make sure there is adequate space in the vehicle for Fido to travel comfortably,” Davis says.

3
DON’T LEAVE PETS INSIDE THE CAR UNATTENDED When you exit the vehicle, so does your pet. “Be aware that you can’t leave a dog in the car when it’s over 70 degrees,” says Selover. “Heat can kill.” Remember to take frequent potty breaks, too. “Keep your pet hydrated before and during travel,” Dr. Cahoon urges.
4
BE SAFE
Keep your pet safe while you travel. “There are terrific harness systems available for dogs at both ezydog.com and kurgo. com,” says Campbell. “These companies are really, really good at designing products like harnesses and barriers that work in almost all automobiles.” The Humane Society of the United States urges drivers to use restraints so pets don’t roam in the car, and don’t let your pet sit in the front seat, where they could be injured if the air bag deploys. Allowing your pet to ride in an open truck bed is also a no-no.
5
FEND OFF PESTS “Make sure your dog is current on flea and tick medicine when traveling,” says Selover, who recommends keeping your dog out of brushy areas (where pests are abundant) and inspecting the pet’s coat thoroughly for fleas and ticks.

FLYING TO YOUR DESTINATION? HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU AND YOUR PET NAVIGATE THE SKIES.
1
BOOK EARLY “Book flights early because there is a limit for how many pets can travel on one flight,” says Davis, noting ticket prices for a pet “can cost anywhere from $125-$200 per ‘seat’”—whether or not the dog is flying freight or in the cabin. Davis says smaller dogs are typically allowed

inside the cabin, while larger pets are considered cargo and travel in a crate with the luggage.
2
BE IN THE KNOW
“Flights are often delayed or canceled during the travel season,” says Davis. “Make sure you have talked to the airline and understand what will happen with Fido in the event your flight is delayed or canceled.”
3
UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFO The Humane Society recommends traveling with a current photo of your pet. They also suggest labeling the pet’s carrier with your name, permanent address, phone number, travel destination, and where you can be reached when the flight arrives.
5
FLY DIRECT
Opt for direct flights if you can, which can minimize the travel time for you and your pet. What’s more, direct flights minimize the likelihood of delays since you’re not waiting for connecting flights.
4
KEEP UPTO-DATE RECORDS “No matter which mode of travel, be sure to get the necessary copies of your pet’s vaccination records,” Davis says.

CONSIDERING LEAVING YOUR PET AT HOME WITH A LOVED ONE OR AT A PET CARE FACILITY? HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER.
2
1
LEAVE PETS WITH MOBILITY ISSUES AT HOME Don’t travel with pets who “don’t move around well or have medical conditions,” Dr. Cahoon says.
RESEARCH THE FACILITY AND STAFF If your pet will be boarded at a pet care facility while you’re away, make sure the space and staff meet high standards. Take a tour and get to know the staff before you book your pet’s stay. “Ask about the staff’s training and make sure you can trust the company,” says Davis, who advises making sure the facility “is insured and has a good safety record.”

Joie De Vivre (boutique, luxury hotels in California, Florida, Scottsdale, Chicago and Honolulu) welcome pets at 20 of their properties; furry friends are greeted with organic beds, water bowls, treats and more.
ROUTINE
Pets thrive on routines, so staying at home might be a comfort for your dog. “They won’t have the stress of going to an unfamiliar place, such as a boarding facility, if they are left in the comfort of their own home,” Petree says.

4
CONSIDER HIRING A SITTER
If you don’t know someone who will stay with or check in on your pet, hire a pet sitter. “Many pet sitters are very flexible, and some will spend the night in your home if that is your wish while traveling,” says Campbell. “Some will simply come twice a day to feed/water your pet and ensure they’re safe.” Make sure the pet knows (or has at least met) the sitter to safeguard that they’ll be comfortable.

O’Connor’s Wood Fire Grill & Bar Smokin’ Good Barbecue by Jeremy B. Neely photo by Dante Fontana
O
’Connor’s is a perfect neighborhood barbecue joint. I stopped by one recent Monday around 6 p.m., as the dinner crowd was just starting to trickle in. O’Connor’s sits on the streetside of a cluster of commercial buildings, and the recently remodeled restaurant is nothing short of marvelous. Rough-hewn wood paneling and stylish pendant lights provide a hip but relaxed atmosphere in which you can kick back, drink a beer, and get messy with Santa Maria-style barbecue. To top it off, the staff is super friendly and effective. My companion and I got our meal rolling with Tri-Tip Dippers, aka sliders, that came with a creamy horseradish sauce and au jus. These babies were superb. The

buns were buttery and toasty, while the tender meat was sliced thin and stacked layer upon layer—something you don’t see all that often with tri-tip, but it worked crazy well. I could have eaten their sliders all night, but I knew there was more food coming. Next up, we mowed down a plate of the Oak Grilled Chicken—a half chicken that was seasoned and grilled with O’Connor’s signature dry rub, resulting in a flavorful and juicy piece of poultry. It came with two sides: a medley of fresh sautéed summer vegetables (squash, bell pepper, onions and carrots) and a mound of buttery garlic smashed potatoes. Barbecue aficionados and roasted meat experts condemn me if you will, but I’m usually a very liberal latherer of sauce—more is better—so as I was carnivoring my way through the chicken, it dawned on me that I hadn’t even touched the barbecue sauce on the table! All the items up to that point were well balanced and tasty as plated, so I didn’t even think I’d need the sauce. Once I did experiment with their house-made

sauces, however, the flavor was so good I concluded that a little dousing takes that great barbecue taste to a new level. Alongside the chicken, we munched on a unique wood-fired BBQ pizza that featured mouthwatering pulled pork, mozzarella, cilantro and a signature tangy red sauce. The scratch-made dough, once baked, transformed into a beautifully puffy, golden-perfect crust with just a smidge of lovely charring. O’Connor’s proved to be a delectable feast. Next time I stop by for a beer and baseball viewing on one of their flatscreen TVs, I’ll try the brisket…with plenty of sauce.

taste FARMER’S CHOP SUEY Bar Tartine by Nicolaus Balla and Cortney Burns, photographs by Chad Robertson (Chronicle Books, 2014, $40)
Bring a medium saucepan of water to boil over high heat. Gently slide the eggs into the pot and bring back to a boil. Boil for 8 minutes. While the eggs are cooking, set up an ice bath. After 8 minutes, remove the eggs from the water, place in the ice bath, and let cool for 10 minutes. Remove the eggs from the ice bath, peel them and set aside until ready to use. In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, sweet peppers, and onion. Add the onion powder, dry mustard, sugar, celery seeds, and vinegar; season with kosher salt and pepper; and toss well. Let stand for at least 15 minutes, or for up to 1 hour, before serving. To serve, quarter the eggs and season them with salt. Spread a thick layer of cottage cheese onto a serving platter and arrange the vegetables and eggs on
dinner date Food and Wine for the Season top. Squeeze the lemon halves over everything, garnish with the dill, and season with finishing salt and pepper. Leftover salad can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Serves 6 to 8.
2013 CONUNDRUM CALIFORNIA WHITE Since Conundrum’s first vintage in 1989, they were determined to make a dramatically different white-wine blend that would surpass the scope of singlevarietal wines. Conundrum White has tantalized palates and turned traditional winemaking on its head for over 20 years. From the first sip of 2013 Conundrum California White, you’re invited in with intriguing aromas of green apples, tangerine and honeysuckle blossoms. The taste is best described as exotic, with layers of peach, apricot nectar, green melon and pear—overlapped with subtle notes of citrus zest and spicy vanilla. A rich, round mouth-feel, supported by fresh acidity, brings the complexity of the wine into balance. Enjoy it as an aperitif with cheese, served on a warm summer’s day with family and friends, or paired with a wide array of dishes, including this month’s veggie-packed Farmer’s Chop Suey. Composed of five grape varietals—Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Viognier and Semillon—all sourced from Napa, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Tulare Counties, Conundrum is a contemporary white blend and a true California wine. —Christina Leyva, Events Manager, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Macaroni Kid (MK) is a national company with unique editors/publishers in many regions. I publish a free weekly E-newsletter detailing all of the family-friendly events and activities happening in the Folsom/El Dorado Hills area (the content is also available on my website). The newsletters are full of other articles, giveaways, tips, advice and spotlight features, too. I had been a faithful subscriber to MK for a few years and always looked forward to the weekly newsletter in my inbox. Last summer, they sent an email out asking if anyone was interested in publishing in our area, but when I responded they had already found someone. MK went through a few publishers before contacting me, and I feel like I’ve found my niche—scouring the area for kids’ activities is something I do anyway, and I’m happy to be able to share my findings with fellow moms and dads. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I consider El Dorado Hills my hometown and feel lucky to be able to raise my family here. I’m truly invested in seeing this community thrive and enjoy promoting local businesses that fit with the MK brand. I really like being a resource for parents to turn to in order to entertain their kids. I know what it’s like to move to an unfamiliar area and this website can be especially helpful for newbies in town. I also enjoy being PTA president at my kids’ elementary school and feel my two jobs somewhat intertwine—the more people I know, the more people I can reach on my website. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Skipolini’s Pizza—they have a great play area for kids on their patio and an even better happy hour! What’s your favorite local event that you go to? We really enjoy the events at the El Dorado Hills Town Center. The Easter egg hunt, Live on the Boulevard, outdoor movie nights, trick-or-treating, and the holiday tree lighting have been the highlights of our year.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Adagio for Hair is a full-service hair salon. We offer amazing salon and esthetic experiences. It found us—we were at the right place at the right time! What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Donna: I had a T-shirt printing job. I learned that being honest pays off. Denise: I was a restaurant hostess. I learned that my job was a small but critical part of the whole business. Why is your staff the best in the business? All of our stylists are very well educated in the art of beauty and customer service. They are passionate about their craft and it shows! We also train and promote from within. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? Donna: I’ve been lucky to learn form many people, but my latest role model is Marcus Lemonis (The Profit) who teaches what we believe: People, product and process are the keys to success. Denise: My business partner, Donna, and my mother are two of my role models. What’s your hidden talent? Donna: Party planning. Denise: Creating recipes. What’s your biggest job perk? Donna: Getting the chance to see those I work with achieve their goals and dreams. Denise: Watching a client bounce out of the salon with a new look. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Donna: Swingle Meat Company in Jackson—an old-fashioned butcher shop for incredible meats. Try the bacon first! Denise: Zia’s Italian Caffé and Gelato Bar. And finally, customer service is…? An exceptional experience that our guests can’t wait to tell their family and friends about.

w a n te d to n a m e h i m Speedo, because he is small and inappropriate. The kids wanted to call him Cornelius. As fans of the democratic process, we compromised, and so his tags read “Speedo Cornelius.” But really we just call him Corny, a black chihuahua tinier than a loaf of bread. He’s a dog we never intended to have, but now we can’t imagine life without him. Isn’t that the way with dogs? There was a bit of a void af ter our Labrador died . Diamond was a big, beautiful girl, full of affection and loyalty and although we missed her, we thought we were fine being down to one dog, a sweet dachshund mix named Bella. With two boys in high school and all that craziness, one dog, we assumed, would be enough. So I’m not sure why we stopped by the Placer SPCA in Auburn one Saturday after a hike in the canyon. Nothing else to do, I suppose. I remember saying, “Let’s just see what they have.” Well, what they had was Corny. In fact, he was the only dog there that day, out of a cage and being kept in a large back room. They told us he was older, about 10. For whatever reason, his previous ow n e r s h a d d ro p p e d him off weeks before. When we entered, he didn’t do any of the things a stereotypical chihuahua does: bark, growl, pee all over. Instead, he bolted FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES AND... across the floor with WHAT’S COMING an energy that belied NEXT MONTH? his years and leaped like a DON’T MISS STYLE’S puppy straight into the arms “WINE: 50+ THINGS of our 15-year-old, licking YOU SHOULD KNOW,” him like an old friend or, PLUS MUCH MORE, more accurately, like he was VISIT STYLEFEDH.COM covered in bacon grease. That was it. The little twerp has been with us ever since. top dog Corny the Canine by Tom Mailey
high alert, all chest and chin, ears perked like two sails full of wind. The second look is far more fitting for his size: wide-eyed, ears pinned back, a little scrunched down—like he’s about to be crushed by a plunging meteor only he can see. Then again, when much of your navigational life is spent dodging feet and tires, you’d be a little jumpy too. Thankfully, unlike many small dogs, he’s rarely yappy— with one exception. Any dog below the knees? Corny’s chill with. He’s happy to touch noses, sniff butts, do all the stuff dogs do to say hello. But any dog bigger than that? He loses his mind, calling them out with a non-stop bark barrage that I’m sure is 70-percent dog expletives—but, only as long as he’s on his leash. He’s like the guy who’s only brave enough to talk tough as long as his friends are holding him back. Usually the big dogs just give him a disinterested glance, but if they do woof back, Corny instantly goes from belligerent soccer hooligan to imminent meteor victim. His dignity is a fluid thing. And not to sound, er, corny, but there is another aspect to his personality: love. Empty laps are intolerable. Bellies were made for scratching. And he can’t just sleep next to you—he has to sleep against you. Any attempt to change that, and he’ll give you a third look involving large, saucer eyes and a sad, worried expression that seems to question your very commitment to the relationship. So, even if your arm is falling asleep, the dynamic is rarely changed. I will never know why his previous owners gave him up. Nor will I ever know why exactly we stopped by the shelter that day. All I know is we’re happy about both. And isn’t it that way with dogs?
