The lives we touch inspire us Ollie and Vernie’s bond has endured through 60 years of marriage and military service in two wars. They still never go to bed angry. So when Ollie was diagnosed with memory problems that can progress to Alzheimer’s disease, they resolved to meet the challenge together. Doctors recommended physical and mental activity to support brain health – so 81-year-old Ollie now plays on three softball teams. The couple fill their social calendar with friends and charity fundraisers. They also fight back by helping others at risk of dementia. Participating in a multiyear study at the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Center, the couple is helping leading researchers investigate the aging brain to find improved methods of diagnosis and treatment. To learn more about Ollie and Vernie’s determination and the region’s only Alzheimer’s research center designated by the National Institute on Aging, visit alzheimer.ucdavis.edu One team. One choice. fond of favorites P

laying favorites is usually not my game—but this month it’s inescapable. This issue, featuring Style’s ever-popular Readers’ Choice Awards, is one of our biggest and best of the year (see, I can’t help myself). It’s time to pay homage to the winners throughout our community who you, Style readers, so loudly cheered for and elected as your “favorites” for this passing year. From favorite seafood restaurant and favorite local artist to favorite local event and favorite place for a facial, we’ve got the scoop with who’s who across the region. Also, be sure to check out some new categories (and new winners) as our local community grows and flourishes. And the favoritism doesn’t stop there. In this month’s FYI, “The 10 Spot” features some of Style’s favorite ways to celebrate Halloween locally. There are “spooktaculars,” haunted houses and festivities galore—all promising howling good ways to spend the late-month autumn nights. For more seasonal fun, check out Local Matters for the October “Hit List,” featuring our favorite pumpkininspired foods found at purveyors across town. In Health & Wellness, find a myriad of area professionals’ favorite essential oils that not only smell great, but also render life-changing benefits to several common health ailments. Who knew lavender could be useful in combating hair loss? On the topic of satisfying smells, check out Style’s favorite (and timely) casserole in Taste—Chicken, Sweet Potato and Bacon—from new cookbook Sunday Casseroles by Betty Rosbottom (Chronicle Books, 2014), to be devoured alongside intermittent swigs of one of our favorite beers: Oskar Blues Brewery Old Chub Nitro Scotch Ale. While you’re in the kitchen, take a look down at one of your most trampled floors in the house. Is it time for a makeover? As we head toward the holidays, it might be perfect timing for revamping the look and flow of your home before guests start flocking. Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID, gives her favorite selections for new styles and innovations in floor coverings in Home Design. Concrete is so cool (literally and figuratively) and is very popular at the moment. I love this look with rich pops of color and strategically placed area rugs. But before you spend all your money on home remodeling, it’s worth a thousand mentions of October’s designation as National Breast Cancer Awareness month. In honor, head over a few pages to Click where we give you the directions to find Style’s favorite local and national products and services, that when purchased, give back to the cause. Now it’s my favorite time: time to get on a plane to enjoy the Caribbean waters of the Dominican Republic. Look for a recap of my “escape” in the coming months! Until next time, enjoy all your favorites…and maybe even find a few new ones! — Desiree

We’d love to hear from you—send us your community events (for Calendar and Outtakes), local news (for What’s Up), and any other story ideas to info@stylemg.com. 8 stylefedh.com - October 2014

asktheexperts Q: What kind of questions should I ask my photographer before a shoot to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible?

A: Regardless of what the photo session is for—whether it be an engagement shoot or senior portraits—there are a few questions to ask for optimal results: • What should I/we/my family wear? • What are your (the photographer’s) expectations of us? • What will we do during our session? Will you guide and pose us. • Should we practice posing or research images we like? • When will I get to see my photos. Here are a couple of tips: Let your photographer know what you are using the images for (i.e. holiday cards, gift for a family member, milestone celebration, etc.). And, if meeting in a new location, make sure you know exactly where to meet! —Amber Shoop Felts Shoop’s Photography Folsom, 916-804-8578 shoopsphotography.com

Q:

As an owner of a pet who loves bringing dirt inside, are there solutions to help save my carpet—before resorting to extensive steaming and cleaning?

A:

Frequent vacuuming and the use of throw rugs will help keep soil out of your carpet. Place a throw rug at the beginning of the carpeted area so that muddy paws touch the rug before the carpet, thus collecting the brunt of the soil. Most throw rugs are easily washed in a machine and don’t require steam cleaning. If your pets get muddy paw prints on the carpet, let them dry and then vacuum the dry soil, which is typically much easier to remove than mud. Finally, vacuum slowly—people tend to be too quick when vacuuming; the slower you go the more soil you’ll remove. —Dean Carter Carter’s Carpet Restoration 4911 Windplay Drive, Suite 1A El Dorado Hills, 916-933-7807 carterscarpet.com October 2014 - stylefedh.com 11

olsom resident Sue Ryan was raised in a large family and always loved children, but it wasn’t until somewhat later in life that she became a parent. At the age of 38, she and her husband decided to adopt a child—and for both, it was the best decision they ever made. “From the moment beautiful Shauna was placed in our arms, I never [had] a moment’s doubt,” she shares. Over 20 years ago, when her daughter was just two years old, Ryan moved to Folsom. She and her husband were drawn to the city’s small-town feel and envisioned it as the perfect place to plant roots. Ryan also saw it as the ideal opportunity to make a difference in her local community. Since becoming Folsom’s public information

officer, Ryan has been instrumental in bringing about the city’s first-ever Community Service Day, to be held October 25. More than 1,000 volunteers are expected at the event, including numerous area service clubs and nonprofits. In addition to cleanup and maintenance projects around town, the campaign will include a citywide food drive for Twin Lakes Food Bank and the assembly of care packages for U.S. troops overseas. Ryan’s hope is that the Community Service Day will become an annual tradition in Folsom. “One of the things that makes our community so very special is the way we step up and get involved,” Ryan shares with a smile. Jake’s Desserts

S

tumbling upon Jake’s Desserts while walking around the Palladio at Broadstone was one of the happiest finds I’ve had in a while. While it may seem like your average dessert shop from the outside, meander inside and you’ll discover it’s so much more than cookies and cupcakes (hello, house-made ice cream!). Using all-natural ingredients and a creamy milk base without artificial coloring, the ice cream at Jake’s is a force to be reckoned with. Customers are given an overwhelming selection of 24 flavors—ranging from dairyfree sorbets like strawberry to unique flavors like chai tea and classics like vanilla. Overwhelmed, the cashier suggested I get a Cow Pie (ice cream sandwich) with Avocado Coconut Ice Cream (a best seller) and Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream—all stuffed between a Chocolate Chip Cookie and a Rocky Road Cookie. The sweetness of the avocado coconut created a beautiful juxtaposition to the Mexican chocolate’s spicy cinnamon. Sandwiching the four, yes four, scoops of ice cream were the softest, chewiest cookies I’d ever tasted. With weekly specials like $1 scoop Mondays and $3 cow pies on Thursdays, I’ll be back for seconds soon! Vice President of Business Operations, and Folsom Symphony musician Anson Wong speaks highly of him. “He sets high standards and is able to motivate the musicians to perform at their highest levels in a positive manner. We have faith in Peter being able to [raise the orchestra’s caliber] to the next level. His ability to connect with the audience is fantastic, making for a very memorable concert experience.” In fact, a main goal of the symphony is to enrich the community through classical music, especially youths. All concerts are family-friendly and patrons can find great discounts in buying season tickets. For more details, email info@ folsomsymphony.com, or visit folsomsymphony.com.

folsom high school jazz band and jazz choir All The Right Notes by LeeAnn Dickson // Photos by Dante Fontana

A

merican jazz has been called the purest expression of our democracy—music of both independence and cooperation, all while balancing the yin and yang of individualism and compromise. British actor and musician Hugh Laurie recently noted: “Jazz is America’s gift to the world.” The Folsom High School Jazz Band and Jazz Choir are champs at bringing that gift to our area and beyond. Since 1993, the Jazz Band 1 has been named “Number One High School Jazz Ensemble in the Nation” 10 times by DownBeat Magazine, with 2014 marking the sixth consecutive year; and for 15 years in a row, the Jazz Choir has been awarded for being the best. While an incredible honor for the performers, Folsom High School and our community, no one could be more proud than Music Director Curtis Gaesser, who has been guiding generations of musicians. “I create something kids want to be a part of,” Gaesser explains. “They all strive to do their best.”

28 stylefedh.com - October 2014

Gaesser, a natural leader who’s been at the helm of the school’s award-winning music program (now in its 84th year) since it’s earliest days, was personally honored by DownBeat Magazine in 2008 as the winner of their Annual Achievement Award in Jazz Education. “I am a manager of talent...My philosophy is to stay out of [the students’] way. It is always about the kids.” Folsom High School offers three levels of Jazz Bands and two Jazz Choirs. Jazz Band 1—which is comprised of 22 student musicians who play trumpets, trombones, saxophones, the piano, drums, guitar and bass—is the apex for all the students to aspire to. “The kids know what is expected of them before they join up,” G aesser says. In Jazz Band, they play everything from the ’40s big band leader Woody Herman to contemporary composer and living legend Maria Schneider. “I have high expectations of the kids,” Gaesser admits. Jazz Choir 1 offers music in a wide range of groups, from the timeless sounds of Manhattan L to R: Thomas Garcia, James, Olpin James, Travis Vo and Transfer to newer bands William Senechal such as One Direction. “I

choose the right music to benefit their strengths... music [that’s] traditional, current, edgy and always evolving,” Gaesser says. Since Jazz Combo and Jazz Choir 1 won this year’s Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation competition again, both groups performed as artists in the 57th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, which was held in late September. “I’m extremely proud to be part of this group,” Gaesser says. The school holds their own competitions, too, such as the Marching Band Contest in November and the annual Jazz Festival in January, where bands from around California come to participate in a fun and rewarding competition. The nonprofit Folsom High School Music Boosters also host many fund-raisers for the group throughout the year. Next October 2014 - stylefedh.com 29

smell this, heal that Power of Essential Oils by Kourtney Jason

Photo © Syda Productions/fotolia.com.

avender, rose, sandalwood…sure, they smell amazing, but did you know these essential oils reap healing powers? Kathleen Bailey, who has been teaching classes on aromatherapy and essential oils for 16 years in the Sacramento area, explains that “essential oils date back to ancient times...For many centuries, essential oils and other aromatics were used for religious rituals, the treatment of illness, and other physical and spiritual needs.” Despite the fact that this form of healing is rapidly growing in popularity, many still don’t realize that life-changing benefits could be just an oil away.

USES

BENEFITS

Aromatherapy—a form of medicine that uses essential oils from plants or roots for psychological and physical well-being—can be used in a wide range of settings to treat a variety of conditions, says Jodi L. Webb, RN, a certified aromatherapist and education coordinator at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. “In general, aromatherapy relieves pain, improves your mood, and promotes a sense of relaxation,” she shares. “In fact, several essential oils—including lavender, rose, orange, bergamot, lemon and sandalwood—have been shown to relieve anxiety, stress and depression. And they are used for a wide variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and increased cognitive function.”

Essential oils are complicated compounds containing up to 100 different chemical components, Webb explains. “Each essential oil is ‘multi-talented,’ having more than one single property, like anti-inflammatory, calming or stimulating, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic or mildly analgesic,” she says. Other benefits include: promoting healthy skin, relieving rash and skin irritation, stimulating mental focus and energy, improving respiratory health, and relieving discomfort in joints and muscles. For example, peppermint (mentha piperita) can be used for respiratory infections, headaches and nausea; while lavender (lavendula agustafolia) is great for skin conditions, burns, hair loss, insomnia and nervous tension; and lemon (citrus limon) can improve microcirculation, increase white blood cells and improve memory.

SAFETY While Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils (TGEOS) are safe for most healing or medicinal purposes, education is critical, Bailey explains. “For example, it’s important to know the difference between lavendula agustafolia (true lavender) and lavandin (grosso or super),” says Bailey, who is also an instructor at Healing Arts Institute in Citrus Heights and became internationally certified in aromatherapy in 2000. “While lavendula agustafolia is used to relieve a burn, lavandin is a hybrid—and usually cut with synthetics—that can cause a burning sensation.” Some oils can be caustic to the skin and should be diluted with a carrier oil, like vegetable, olive or grapeseed, prior to use. What’s more, these oils should not be used in or around the eyes, and she also suggests consulting a reference guide, such as Essential Oils Desk Reference (Life Science Publishing), Medical Aromatherapy by Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, or The Art of Aromatherapy by Robert B. Tisserand.

BUYING Since not all essential oils are created equal, the only way to know you’re getting a pure, therapeutic-quality essential oil is to know your supplier, Webb advises. “Growing conditions vary (pollutants, pesticides, climate, altitude and time of harvest), as well as distillation methods (time and temperature),” she says. At Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Webb works with the company Young Living, which is the only one in the industry that guarantees a “seed to seal” process. “Other companies may [claim to] provide ‘therapeutic-grade’ essential oils; however, there is no regulation of the industry,” she explains. “Typically, buying them off the shelf from a health food store isn’t a guarantee that it’s a 100-percent, therapeutic-grade essential oil.”

hen the parents of today were headstrong teens, few were anticipating technology’s global takeover. Most parents struggle with finding a happy, healthy medium when it comes to teenagers and technology. It is, after all, something of a high-wire act—one with no net and a long way to fall. So, where to draw that murky line in the sand? Here, a local high school teacher, mother and student try to find the balance. “When my kids first got cell phones, they were obsessed; they never put them down,” admits an El Dorado Hills mom with two daughters—one still in high school. “But like anything, they became more of a novelty and, though they still use them, they were on to the next thing.” While technology is hardly a fad (not like, say, skinny jeans) there always seems to be another new social media site or gadget competing for our teens’ fickle attention. So in this case, rather than ban all devices from the house, Mom set fair rules around its use—in other words, apps are awesome, but family comes first. Or, as she puts it, “No technology during meals or family time.” From an educational point of view, technology has clear advantages for teens: a broader research base and computer skills they can later apply in college and the workforce, for starters.

October 2014 - stylefedh.com 33

ourkids HOW ONE LOCAL TEEN FINDS HER BALANCE At age 12, Alyssa Wong, 2014 Oak Ridge High School graduate, got a cell phone and started using computers for more than just school projects. Today, when asked to tally her average tech use, the 18-year-old offers, “Maybe 14 hours a day? I’m on my iPhone constantly; it’s practically attached to me at this point.” I also watch TV a lot during the summer when I’m not working.” Alas, work. A sideline. Something else to do. With so much at a click, Wong, a frequent video chatter, places

Technology has also proved to be an asset to her in school. Having a phone with Internet, Wong explains, allows for fast access to information should she need to retrieve stats on the latest economic policies or correctly conjugate a verb. On the flip side, Wong says, “You lose out on a lot of chances to have real, face-toface conversations. A huge percentage of my generation doesn’t have basic conversation skills because they rely on their phones too much; instead of talking in person, they hide behind a phone or laptop.” Wong’s parents embraced technology by helping her navigate the computer world. She, in turn, helped them become more cell phone savvy and now uses technology broadly, but in conjunction with the one thing predating even the most rudimentary forms of communication: her noggin. “Nowadays it is harder to have that balance because technology is used in every aspect of our lives,” she admits. “I think for me, when I’m with people, I know not to use any phones or anything, and that’s my balance.”

34 stylefedh.com - October 2014

Despite this, notes a teacher at Ponderosa High School, “some of the many benefits also can negatively impact students.” Academically, ramifications range from illegible handwriting to significantly poor spelling skills. More concerning, he adds, “I’ve noticed young adults do not appear to be as capable of managing themselves in a formal conversation nearly as well as they used to. Conversing is a learned skill, something they seem to have lost with all the texting, instant messaging, Facebooking, etc.” He also cites distraction and an inability to cope without technology as issues. “I have personally witnessed students fall apart over the loss of a phone, which should be considered a convenience rather than life support.” But, as technology is here to stay, parents and educators alike are embracing it as a key learning tool when used appropriately, whether that means installing a password protected Internet connection or limiting access to certain websites and related strategies. Most crucially, suggests both the EDH mom

and Pondo teacher, is to cultivate, encourage, and support teens’ outside interests, too. Crucial to the equation is parents’ own digital doings. When was the last time you were caught tech-tasking at the table, Mom? And Dad, do you have to check the scores during Uno? Model quiet time and not only will your kids see it’s possible to engage in tech-free activities and have fun, but you might e ve n r e m e m b e r how much you once liked it. Welcome your teens’ participation or curiosity if offered. If not, take heart knowing that your parental example is teaching them how to connect in ways beyond the digital realm. As for your teens’ technology habits, if their use is responsible and constructive, leverage it to bring your family together. Find a community volunteer project for your tribe, then enlist your teen to Instagram their benevolence. Lastly, consider setting out for a remote, cellphone-free zone that allows teens to connect with their innate sense of discovery—and the wider world.

Volunteers are the backbone of the Harris Center, for example, but the college also needs financial support to fund scholarships, buy new computer equipment, and provide uniforms and equipment for the college’s budding sports teams (e.g. the women’s soccer team pictured above). Plans are also in the works to open extensions in Placerville and Rancho Cordova, all of which receive some public funding, but must be supplemented by grants and donations.

eautiful floor coverings can truly transform a room, but they can also be one of your biggest expenses, so planning ahead is essential. Before deciding on materials, colors and textures, consider some design basics. Using a single type of flooring throughout most of your home, breaking it only at bedrooms and wet areas, will create the biggest impact. Check out the following materials to see what suits your style.

WOOD Beautiful but tough, wood is a warmer and more forgiving material than tile. There are two kinds of wood floors: solid wood and engineered wood. Both are eco-friendly options when certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and come in different widths and finishes to create your unique aesthetic. Another option is to choose floors salvaged from older buildings or milled from salvaged posts and beams.

and poured concrete can be tinted, stained or etched to mimic stone or tile; what’s more, it can have pieces of stone, wood or glass mixed in or embedded into it for a one-of-a-kind look. Keep in mind that it’s an extremely hard surface so it’ll be noisy and fragile items dropped on it will probably break; you’ll also need to seal it regularly. Consider pairing concrete with a radiant heating surface.

CARPET AND AREA RUGS For versatility and durability, there’s nothing better than tile. It can be used in any room and with any design, and comes in a wide range of colors, textures, finishes and prices. Tile is universally appealing, sustainable and easy to maintain. Natural stone tile includes limestone, slate, soapstone, marble and granite. Stone is subject to weathering and aging, which many people prefer; what’s more, natural stone develops a patina over time that is unique to the traffic patterns of the space. Just as for linen fabric and wood cabinetry, the natural look and wear only adds to the product’s beauty.

LAMINATE Laminate flooring is a photograph of another surface that is adhered to a base and then sealed. Inexpensive, resilient and easy to install, laminate is popular with do-ityourselfers. The higher-end products are more resistant to damage and will last longer. Adding an underlayment will absorb sound and make the flooring sound less hollow when walked on. Unlike wood, laminate cannot be refinished.

CONCRETE Concrete is one of the most popular flooring choices today. It’s extremely durable,

Carpet provides the most warmth and comfort of any floor covering, and today’s technologies have created an even greater variety of textures, colors and cuts. Carpets made of woven plants and grasses, such as sisal, are now much more versatile. A beautiful rug can be a room’s focal point and make it feel cozy, especially over concrete, tile or stone floors. Area rugs can also be the centerpiece of a room, used to define one specific area within a room, or placed over an existing carpet to create added dimension. A well-chosen floor rug placed in the right spot will enhance anything you can dream up.

lthough the beloved Bidwell Street Bistro has recently been reestablished as Bacchus House Wine Bar & Bistro, the important ingredients are still there: attentive service in an elegant but cozy atmosphere—whether seated in the expansive dining room, the wine bar (check out the new baby grand piano!) or on the charming patio amongst marble statues and lush greenery. Bacchus is the name the Roman’s coined for Dionysus, the Greek God of wine and bountiful harvest, and you won’t be Alaskan Halibut disappointed with their wine list overhaul, which features even more offerings from our region’s award-winning wineries. Signature favorites like French onion soup can still be found on the menu, too, but as the focus switches from Parisian influences to New American and New World cuisines, you’ll delight in the new owners’ seasonal dishes that utilize fresh fare from local farms. My date and I began with the prosciutto plate, which came reminiscent of a Caprese salad, but with a tantalizing twist. hearty portion of tender rosemary-and-seasalt-crusted beef alongside al dente green beans and fluffy mashed potatoes. We couldn’t resist ending the night on a sweet note and were blown away by Bacchus’ berries and cream plate—it was almost too beautiful to eat! Served on a palette sprinkled with fresh flowers, the strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, freshly whipped cream and splash of berry sauce celebrated all of the season’s succulent fruits. “Dining fit for the Gods,” my date murmured between bites.

taste CHICKEN, SWEET POTATO AND BACON CASSEROLE Sunday Casseroles by Betty Rosbottom (Chronicle Books, 2014, $24.95)

Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Generously butter a 9-by-13-inch or another shallow 3-quart baking dish. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Place a chicken breast on a work surface and, with a sharp knife held parallel with the surface, cut the breast in half horizontally. Repeat with the remaining breasts. You will have 8 chicken pieces. In a small bowl, mix together the thyme, sage, 1 teaspoon of salt and the pepper. Set aside 1 teaspoon of this seasoning. Season both sides of each piece of the chicken with the remaining mixture. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Stack several rounds on top of each other and cut into 1/4-inch-wide strips. Peel the onion, halve through the root end, and slice into 1/4-inchwide strips. Heat 3 tablespoons of the olive oil until hot in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chicken breasts and

dinner date Food and Beer for the Season sauté until lightly browned, 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer the chicken to the prepared baking dish. Add the chicken broth and wine to the pan and whisk to scrape up any browned bits on the bottom. Cook, stirring, until the liquid has reduced to 1/4 cup, 3-4 minutes. Pour over the chicken breasts. In the same frying pan set over medium heat, fry the bacon until crisp, 4-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels and, when cool, chop coarsely. Discard all but 1 tablespoon of the drippings in the pan and add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Set the frying pan over medium heat, and when hot, add the sweet potatoes and onion and sauté, stirring, until softened, 7-8 minutes. Season the vegetables with salt and spoon them over the chicken. Sprinkle with the bacon. Melt the butter until hot in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk and the reserved 1-teaspoon of seasoning. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, whisking constantly, and cook until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 3 minutes. Taste the sauce and season with salt if needed. Drizzle the sauce over the ingredients in the casserole and sprinkle with the Gruyère. Cover the casserole loosely with a sheet of foil. Bake the casserole until the chicken is cooked through and tender, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. If desired, garnish the center of the dish with some sage and thyme sprigs before serving. Serves 4.

OSKAR BLUES BREWERY OLD CHUB NITRO SCOTCH ALE Oskar Blues is known as the “original craft brewery in a can”—a trend that seems to be sweeping the craft beer scene as of late, due to the fact that cans keep beer fresher for longer by eliminating the damaging effects of light and oxygen while being infinitely recyclable and portable. The Colorado-based brewery is known for packing huge, hoppy flavors into these small aluminum cans, and Old Chub Nitro—which comes in at 6.9 percent alcohol-by-volume—is no different. The super smoky and malty ale boasts flavors of semisweet cocoa and coffee, plus light hints of beechwood. The “nitro” refers to the addition of nitrogen gas to the carbonation process, which produces smaller bubbles than CO2 and causes them to react with, and displace each other—creating the signature “cascade” when opened and contributing to the thick, creamy mouth feel. This month’s rich Chicken, Sweet Potato and Bacon Casserole is a perfect complement to the bold, full-bodied beer, and the sweet finish goes perfectly with the starchy, innate caramel flavors of the sweet potato. —Heather Zamarripa, Executive Chef, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

Answers by Mark Dyba Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Complete Ponds is a retail pond supply store for the “do-it-yourselfer.” We also build custom koi and water garden ponds, as well as pondless waterfall features. We have a dedicated service technician who focuses solely on cleaning ponds and pondless waterfalls; he’s also an expert in installing pumps, filters and UV-filtration systems, as well as leak detection and repair. It found me. I was selling jewelry in Portland, Oregon, and the owner of a pond store came in. Over the course of our sales interaction, he asked me if I wanted a job. I said, “Yes!” What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? Delivering newspapers door-to-door in Carmichael. At a young age, I learned the discipline of getting up early and being responsible for something. I also learned not to hop retaining walls on your skateboard or you’ll break your knee. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? Every customer is the same with us—It doesn’t matter how much or how little they spend. We focus on educating them so that we can build relationships and get them exactly what they need. Why is your staff the best in the business? The pond industry is always evolving. From new equipment to installation, there’s always something new coming out. Our staff is committed to educating ourselves so that we can confidently pass along what we learn to our customers. If you could be in any other profession, what would it be? A professional football player and a professional world traveler—I’m not sure if that’s really a profession though! And finally, customer service is…? Identifying the need and doing whatever we can to fulfill that need. It may not be instantaneous, but when we say we’ll call you back…we mean it!

Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? My business found me. I don’t think anyone as a child says, “I want to grow up to be a colon therapist.” I believe that our heart’s passion lies in our greatest pain. I found relief and an understanding of my own health issues that started with colon therapy. After a few years of further study and research, I’ve come to know that true health begins within: with the food we eat, the thoughts we think, the words we speak, and the company we keep. What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? I was the ice cream scooper girl at Thrifty inside Arden Fair Mall. I had a blast at the time and learned that people are all basically the same, whether young or old. I also learned that I love working with people and each interaction, with a smile and a little ice cream, can be magical. People go nuts about ice cream! How are you involved with both the community and your customer? Having three daughters who are active in sports, I have limited time; however, I do provide nutrition and cooking classes for the employees at CalPERS and have recently started offering free educational classes and cooking classes at Internal Wisdom. I want to teach people healthier eating skills. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? I love Thai, but lately I’ve been going to Karen’s Bakery in Historic Folsom. I love their fresh salads and how they buy local, sustainable and organic ingredients. What’s your favorite childhood memory? Swimming all summer long—all day, every day! And finally, customer service is…? Creating an experience that gives each person who comes in the opportunity to feel like they belong and are getting a good value.

ghost notes Tales from a Haunted House by Tom Mailey Who can explain why ghosts are so restless In the middle of a night such as this? Why must they clatter, clamor and clang And bump into things that we miss?

Is it me coming home from another day’s work Whistling as I walk through the door? Do I disturb them by turning the TV on And cheering when my football team scores?

What makes a ghost so thoughtless, So clumsy and rude with his touch? What makes him appear at the top of the stairs And stand there without doing much?

Is it the way our furniture’s arranged, Can ghosts be obsessive compulsive? Should the chair be here, the couch over there, But they’re not so the spook finds it repulsive?

Why do they move things on mantles When for a moment our eyes dart away? Why do they tap us with icy cold fingers Or moan everything that they say?

Or maybe they dislike what we cooked tonight, Was it something their nose couldn’t handle? Are they merely saying they don’t like the smell And someone should light a candle?

Why do they choose to sit in creaky old rockers And not recliners or a comfy new couch? And why, if they’re ghosts and don’t weigh a thing, Are their footsteps so heavy and loud?

Do they hate the station I play on the radio? Does country music send them all reeling? Are the drapes the wrong color? Or the style of fan on our ceiling? Or maybe they once saw me naked, Stepping from the tub and bending for a towel. That’d be enough for the scariest of ghouls To let out a shriek and a howl.

And if a door is open, they’ll slam it When shutting it gently would do. That’d be enough to scare me half to death Wouldn’t it be for you too?

I’m starting to think that maybe that’s it, It’s not them scaring us that’s the issue. It may be reverse—we may be their curse And that’s why sometimes ghosts will go…BOO!

Do ghosts lay awake on stormy dark nights Waiting ’til the sun again shines? What do ghosts get afraid of—please tell What sends a chill up their spine?

Can anyone say why ghosts rap on walls With knuckles we can’t even see, Or rattle on doorknobs like forgetful old men Who’ve carelessly misplaced their keys?
