editor’snote

nless, of course, it’s a Style Readers’ Choice Award! In that case, winning is quite impressive. Over the years, our annual contest of readers’ choices for local favorites has become the talk of the town, with competition becoming increasingly fierce. We are all presented with hundreds, if not thousands of choices a day – some decisions easier than others – but the ones we celebrate this month are those shared by many. With thousands of votes counted, this year we proudly give you an expanded list – including many new categories – of local winners. The numerous awardees run the gamut from favorite breakfast place and favorite place to get vegetarian food to favorite kids’ activity and favorite pet groomer, all the way to favorite local athlete, favorite wedding DJ and favorite best kept secret. My favorite secret (which is secret no more) is keeping this month’s magazine handy in my car or purse for when I’m in the market for something new...like a new Thai restaurant or somewhere to get my oil changed. It’s a good reference for finding people, businesses, services and activities that have been approved of by so many fellow residents. Speaking of secrets, if you have a high school senior this year, don’t miss Melissa Camilleri Magliola’s “Countdown to College” in Our Kids. She gives succinct strategies and tips to ease the stress and increase a kid’s success throughout the college admissions process. Also in this issue, make your next party (the holidays are on our heels!) a winner withJamila B. Khan’s “Host with the Most” in Home Design. Add a little spark to your shin-dig with these seven hospitable must-haves. And since you will also want to look glowing at your gatherings, check out “Forever Young” in Health & Wellness for the best anti-aging products on the market. From creams and serums to hair and smile care, the list will set you on a path to the fountain of youth. Looking to get involved in the community or find a new activity? Find more to see and do within the pages of What’s Up, FYI and the Calendar. Until next month, enjoy the new season in town and let your old favorites know how much you love them. — Desiree

We’d love to hear from you – send us your community events (for Calendar), your favorite recipe & photo (for Thanksgiving Reader Recipes), and any other story ideas to info@stylemg.com. 6 stylemg.com - October 2012

But she did her research and learned about a new radiotherapy treatment that would eliminate the need to have weeks of radiation following her tumor-removal surgery. She switched her care to Sutter, and within two months of her initial diagnosis, she was cancer-free. Lynette’s story is not unusual. asktheexperts do I know if my child needs a Q: How tutor? If a student shows signs of boredom, A: doesn’t complete homework assignments regularly or receives a bad grade on the first quiz or test, it’s a clear indication he/she is going through a difficult phase in learning. It becomes imperative for parents to seek assistance from a professional tutor with the qualifications, skills and experience to help. Tutors can guide the student by ensuring they clearly understand subjects, concepts and methods, by checking the accuracy of homework and re-teaching the lessons as necessary. A tutor also coaches in study skills improvement, confidence building, test-taking skills development and time management, through individualized attention that is seldom possible at school these days. A responsible tutor makes all efforts to ensure the student achieves the highest grade point (A+) or maintains at least a B in the subject. — Hari Shetty, Director EZ Tutoring ez-tutoring.com, 916-337-3647 are the benefits of having an Q: What ergonomic mattress? asking people to fit things.” This is at the core of our philosophy. Ergonomics uses the knowledge of anatomy and physiology with an understanding of engineering and mechanics to maximize performance. Ergonomic mattresses have been skillfully engineered to promote a deeper sleep. Many of these mattresses are also made of the purest and most durable components, equaling high performance at a lower cost. Other benefits include: ecologically healthy components, built to last; designed for optimum support and pressure reduction; designed to aid in optimal breathing and posture; multiple styles and levels of firmness – dual-sided for couples; eliminates roll-together and center sag; quiet and stable – no side-to-side motion or bounce. — Chip and Jill Huckaby European Sleep Design 916-989-8909, sleepdesign.com

A decade ago, after more than 12 years away to pursue her education and a career in dance, Debi Worth found herself once again in El Dorado Hills. “I was born and raised in El Dorado County,” Worth says. “I was coming home.” Although she’d been a successful professional dancer – touring all over t h e wo r l d w i t h M i s s United States pageants – a torn ligament in her back caused Worth to focus her energies on teaching. She is now a tenured professor at Folsom Lake College and the owner of El Dorado Dance Academy, a thriving business which has grown from humble beginnings to one with 25 employees teaching a wide range of dance styles. For Worth, the most rewarding aspect 14 stylemg.com - October 2012

of her work is the ability to share her love of dance with the community. Her dance troupes perform at events and benefits throughout the region and the world, and every year in August, the studio hosts a Dance Jubilee day with free dance classes open to the public. More than anything, however, Worth tries to always live by her motto, “Integrity in Dance and Life,” which can mean anything from keeping kids dressed ageappropriately to getting them involved in local charity events. “I love touching the lives of young people and inspiring them,” Worth says. “Dance enriches their lives, makes them part of something bigger than just themselves.” — Amber Foster

Journey Back in Time

n October 20 and 21, the 20th Annual Folsom Renaissance Faire will provide the ultimate weekend escape. Journey back in time to 16th century England, during the rule of Queen Elizabeth I and the time of London’s popular playwright, William Shakespeare. Enter a delightful Elizabethan village, with more than 900 actors and entertainers in period costume speaking the Queen’s English; visitors are encouraged to come in costume as well. As you stroll through the Faire, you’ll encounter knights and nobles, pirates and peasants, artists, musicians and actors. These colorful characters will create vignettes resembling scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. Continuous entertainment will take place all along the grounds of the Faire and on stages, featuring comedy and theatre shows, juggling, storytelling, music, dance and games. The Imperial Knights, a nationally acclaimed jousting troupe, will return for the second year to do battle in the Rodeo Arena next to the park – their metal armor, 12-foot lances, thundering mounts and splintering hits are all real. The jousting exhibitions are part history lesson, part rodeo and part demolition derby! Artisans and crafters will demonstrate some of the trades of the day, and more than 100 shopkeepers will offer a wide variety of handmade goods to buy, including jewelry, pottery, clothing, toys, perfumes and more. Satisfy your appetite at the Faire’s open-air food court, with vendors offering tempting food and drink, including the ever-popular giant roasted turkey drumsticks and pub fare. The family-friendly Faire is presented by Renaissance Productions, in collaboration with Folsom Parks and Recreation. Tickets are $14/adults; $9 for students K-12 with proof of school assignment, ages 6-12 and seniors ages 55 and up; and free for children under age 6. Onsite parking is $4/vehicle. Proceeds will benefit the CAVE Teen Centers and Friends of the Folsom Library. The Faire takes place at Folsom City Lions Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. — Lesley Miller For online ticket sales, discounts and more information, visit folsomfaire.com.

Foodie find photo by Dante Fontana.

The Hub Coffee House & Café A recent fall morning had me craving iced coffee and, with hunger overtaking my brain, something to nibble and savor alongside. I found just what I was looking for at The Hub Coffee House & Café, conveniently located in the El Dorado Hills Town Center. The airy café – comfortably populated with customers typing away on laptops and enjoying their daily caffeine fix – felt warm and inviting. Each wall featured local art and paintings for sale. The menu, which changes daily based on the owner/chef’s inspiration is nicely varied, featuring simple-yet-delicious options like their Cuban Panini, Beef Barley Soup, and Chicken Shallot Pizza with pesto. I was lucky enough to sample a slice of the Mushroom Onion Fontina Tart with Sherry reduction. The tart tasted even better than it looked, bursting with flavors of onion and earthy mushrooms, with just enough salty Fontina to score a perfect ingredient combination. It was light enough for breakfast, yet decadent enough to not leave me needing more. My much-needed java craving was satisfied with a milky iced Americano concocted with sublimely roasted beans – a distinct taste that surfaced with every sip. Open until 9 p.m. on Fridays (open mic night) and Saturdays, the Hub is also a cool way to cap off any night out. Infinite Arms – Band of Horses Almost pop, a little bit rock, a touch of folk – it’s hard to describe Band of Horses’ Infinite Arms. Sweeping melodies will swirl in your head for days and gorgeous vocal harmonies will bring a smile to your face merely because of their sweetness. Are we overselling? You tell us.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Alongside Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, Shirley Jackson’s 1959 The Haunting of Hill House is a literary horror classic. Popular enough to be twice made into a movie (1963 and 1999), nothing replaces the slow, unfolding psychological terror of reading Jackson’s original masterpiece.

Carnival of Souls Made in 1962 for $33,000, Carnival of Souls is a must for fans of Lynch and Romero, or horror in general. With its unique score and unsettling sound and visual design, Carnival of Souls is more of a stylistic horror movie than blood and guts (there isn’t any); a curiously unsettling piece of filmmaking for this holiday month.

The Carpenter – The Avett Brothers The Avett Brothers are the perfect compliments to the ghouls and goblins on the loose this October. Their seventh studio album, The Carpenter returns to the trademark simplicity of 2009’s I and Love and You, but tracks like “Paul Newman Vs. The Demons” show they haven’t forgotten how to get loud.

NOW: Breed by Chase Novak Chase Novak is the pseudonym for National Book Award-winner Scott Spencer (A Ship Made of Paper, Endless Love). It’s clear why a name change was in order – Breed is not for the faint of heart. Simply put, a gruesome tale of fertility treatment, Breed has already been praised by the likes of Stephen King and is a Halloween must.

The Cabin in the Woods From the mind of Buffy/Firefly genius Joss Whedon, this flick starts out as a paint-by-numbers “teens go camping” horror story. You’ll think you’ve seen the movie before, right up until the moment when…(ha!), like we’d really spoil what’s in store for you. All we can say is that it’s awesome, and a mandatory Halloween viewing.

“The Uncensored Message that My Wife Asked Me Not to Write…” Dear friend, Well, at first, my wife asked me not to write this. We had a big discussion about it. Finally, she understood what I was trying to do, and actually helped me write this letter to you. Here’s the thing. In my office, most of the people that come in to see me tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They’ve had “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. That’s not what most people are looking for.

This new doctor does an exam takes some films, and then ‘adjusts’ my wife’s spine (he tells us there is compression in her body creating pressure on the nerves that are affecting her legs.) The adjustment is very gentle, and post exams and films are taken to assure the adjustment is successful.

Health, or the lack of it, very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me On the way home from our visit tell you something about me… my wife states that she felt At the time, I’m about to become a tingling in her legs! etal is typically seen as a masculine element. Yet in the hands of metal sculptor and local artist Kristen Hoard, rigid metals – including aluminum, copper and steel – become flowing curvaceous images of flowers, hearts and celestial bodies. “I used to go to art shows all the time and I loved metal. It never really occurred to me to make art myself, and then someone said to me, ‘Why don’t you take a class?’” Hoard remembers. The humble 22 stylemg.com - October 2012

beginnings of her career in early 2000 were spent taking welding classes at a local art school and creating pieces on the patio of her small condo in the Bay Area. It quickly became clear that running a 50foot extension cord through her house to power a welder and plasma cutter was limiting her creativity, so she sought out an area with a reputation for embracing the arts, and soon discovered the beautiful community of Sacramento. In 2005, Hoard made a significant shift in her style. Having previously focused on masks, faces and mirrors made from a variety of scrap metals, an enlightening experience at a music festival sent her in an entirely different direction. She decided to take the intriguing ways in which fire, light and metal were combined by the artists at the festival and make it into more accessible art that could be brought into the home. As a result, her sculptures took on a whole new life. Hoard has also bravely tackled the

topic of mental health with her sculptures. Since her own sister struggled with mental illness and depression during the majority of her adulthood, Hoard was inspired to create pieces meant to give the viewer insight into the mind of someone suffering from depression. In the fall of 2010, the Sacramento-based 2110 Art Gallery invited Hoard to exhibit her work alongside Shirley Mason (the woman made famous in a book titled Sybil about her multiple personality disorder). The Edge of Darkness, a tall metal box featuring quotes from her sister about her struggles welded around it, was Hoard’s most meaningful piece. “People got to walk around the piece to read each thing. It created a different state of mind for the viewer,” she says. But the work wasn’t easy. “These pieces were really new for me, because they were conceptual instead of decorative. It was a transformation for me, but it took a lot out of me too.” The outcome was worth every ounce of her energy, though. “I think my sister felt really honored,” she says. Currently, Hoard’s channeling all of her creativity into giving customers the utmost beauty in her creations infused with metal, fire and light. “When I’m working with clients for a custom piece, I try to meet them and see their space – the colors and the artistic style, the feel and energy [of the space], and design from there,” Hoard says. With insight like hers, people are certain to love displaying her work.

countdown to college Tips to Acing the Admissions Process by Melissa Camilleri Magliola

FOR STUDENTS 1. DON’T PROCRASTINATE The California State University application opened October 1, and the University of California online application opens November 1. “Last year during this time, I set alarms on my cell phone to give myself a schedule of when I should have certain parts of my application done. That gave me enough time to double-check all parts before submitting my apps,” Joshua Offenstein, Sacramento State freshman, says. Time management is key. Start today.

2. APPLY BROADLY Joe Fisher, admissions and outreach counselor at Sacramento State, says, “I like to recommend students apply to their dream school, an attainable choice, and a fallback. You never know how competitive a campus will be from year to year.” If the $40-$65 price tag per application is making you cringe, check out porcelina.net/freeapps for a list of U.S. colleges and universities that don’t charge application fees under certain circumstances. 26 stylemg.com - October 2012

3. AFTER APPLYING, CHECK YOUR EMAIL AND WRITE DOWN PASSWORDS! “It’s incredible how often I see really bright, college-bound students who are puzzled because they haven’t heard back from a school to which they’ve applied,” says Kara McGuire, head counselor at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale. “Nine times out of 10, they aren’t checking their emails or Web portals.” Fisher concurs. “Most (if not all) communication from universities will be through email.” Check it! And while we’re on the subject of email, we suggest using a simple, professional email address. You’re applying to college; time to retire the cutesy one you made back in fourth grade.

FOR PARENTS 4. KEEP YOUR KID ORGANIZED Putting deadlines on a family calendar is helpful, as well as a special file folder with all college-related paperwork. Fisher says, “Thousands of students per year have their applications withdrawn from consideration for not meeting deadlines, such as sending in their SAT/ ACT scores or their transcripts on time.” Offenstein agrees. “I don’t know how many times I called to have the receipt of something confirmed. To think if I didn’t follow-up and didn’t know I was missing something – well, let’s not go there.”

As the class of 2013 slugs through personal statement essay revisions, while buried under a mountain of SAT vocabulary flashcards, we’d like to offer a few words to the wise. We’ve consulted the experts and compiled a list of tips to help your family navigate the often-murky waters of the college admissions process, in hopes of providing some stress-reduction along the way.

isn’t filing the applications; rather, it’s waiting for the admissions decisions. “You might notice you and your student are fighting way more than usual,” McGuire explains. “This is normal. As parents, we want to keep our babies with us, while our seniors are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of childhood. It’s a transition. Be gentle with each other.”

Sheltering Kids and Providing Hope by Jenn Thornton

eflecting a now sadly familiar story, Franny and her older sister, Alex, suffered extreme emotional distress from living in a violent household. Later they endured the fallout of their parents’ fractious divorce – one involving the criminal and family court system, Child Protective Services and various government non-profit agencies. Despite well-intentioned attention from all parties, the girls continued to bear severe anxiety resulting from their

…kids might be encouraged to ‘stomp’ on their ‘icky’ feelings... experience – the brunt of its toll painfully obvious to their deeply concerned, and extremely determined mother, Jennifer Rodriguez. Helping Franny and Alex – now joyful, well-adjusted 9- and 12-year-olds – better deal with their highly-charged emotional challenges led Rodriguez to establish the Orangevale-based non28 stylemg.com - October 2012

profit, Franny’s House, which provides kids with healthy coping strategies to handle situational anxieties and emotional pressures, and their parents with techniques to better manage the stress, establish structure, reset boundaries and rebuild the parent-child trust bond. Unique to Franny’s House is the nonprofit’s approach to care crisis. There a child’s underlying issues – such as attention seeking behavior in an effort to gain power – and stress-causing triggers are rooted out and dealt with using age-appropriate tactics. Why stress? Because, Rodriguez recently explained on Blog Talk Radio’s Army of Angels, the organization has identified stress as “…the first barrier to accessing a healthier emotional mindset.” “Therefore,” she elaborates, “We work with our children, and empower them to manage their stress first and then begin to rebuild some of those broken relationships and personal boundaries.” This happens methodically, initially by tapping into a child’s natural physicality. Children are offered a platform that

encourages them to positively express their stress (important because young kids posses a limited vocabulary and therefore are unable to verbally describe the subtleties of complex emotions they feel). At Franny’s House kids might be encouraged to “stomp” on their “icky” feelings or pinpoint them through other forms of active moving. Then, “soothing” activities are introduced. Supplementary support comes from a full slate of programs and services. Mrs. Chim’s Class – entertaining yet informative Web-based puppet shows – tackles hot-button social issues like racism and intolerance, while Project Me – a peer-run project by teens for teens – generates a positive social culture that helps to temper the power of common negative influences. The volunteer Youth Advisory Committee, led by youth directors and comprised of middle- and high-school students, was formed to help participants develop leadership skills while serving their community. Parents, meanwhile, have access to a 24-hour support hotline as well as to Sacramento County Court-approved parenting and co-parenting courses. And everyone benefits from the organization’s interactive bullying education and advocacy program. Its strong network of resources includes Bully Busters, which teaches kids to identify harassing behaviors in order for them to sidestep a potential situation in which they might be targeted and tormented. Related seminars discussing social hierarchies, structures and power struggles are also conducted. When necessary, a bullying advocate is assigned to discuss a bullying situation with parents and children, while serving as a liaison for both at the school level.

y friends brought their daughter home from the hospital the other day. Don’t worry, she’s fine – she was just born there. This is the family’s fourth trip home from such an event. Four kids, all living at one place called home. My family brought babies home from the hospital, too. The first time it happened we were living in the Philippines. We have a blond-haired, green-eyed Filipina. We brought her home twice – once to our home in Davao City, and then later to the U.S., our home country. Eventually we brought our son and our other daughter home as well. Now it’s different. Now my kids come home on their own – on their own power, their own time, and their own agenda. (Sometimes on my dime.) When my wife was pregnant, we had to wait. Nine months seems like an awfully long time, especially through the summer. And we waited, because you can’t hurry these 30 stylemg.com - October 2012

things. Now, with all of my kids in their 20s, the waiting continues. I’m waiting today; my youngest is coming home tonight. She’s the maid of honor in a wedding in Yosemite, and when the party’s over she’s driving home for the weekend. All by herself, all grown up. I can’t wait, but I do. You can’t hurry these things. I often wonder what it was like for my parents when they were waiting. As they dropped me off at college that first year, I’m sure they thought, “I wonder when he’ll come home.” When I moved out of state for graduate school, they waited. When I moved across the Pacific Ocean for a year with my pregnant wife and their future grandbaby due the next spring, they waited. I can only guess, because I never asked them; I was on an adventure and was so eager to get my life started that I never turned around to see the look on their faces. I could see that look today if I glanced in a mirror. Did I mention my daughter’s coming home?

It’s not too late to have this conversation with my mom. She still waits for me. We have a ritual – I call her every Sunday afternoon. It began 25 years ago when Donna, my wife, and I were just starting Lakeside Church in Folsom. Every Sunday my mom would call to see how the church did that day; she wanted to be a part of the adventure. These days she waits for my call. We hear a lot about adult kids returning home today. They launch and then return home. They set out again, but come back. I know it’s good for them to be independent; I know it’s a part of growing up; but I actually like it when they’re home again. I imagine someday they’ll come home with a family of their own, which will change things again. I’ll keep waiting. You can’t hurry these things.

Located on Sutter Street in Historic Folsom, the Bistro sits upstairs, which allows for the option of outdoor balcony seating. Being a rather warm day, however, my dining partner and I chose indoors. I was delighted we did, as it allowed us to easily soak in the ambiance and authentic French atmosphere. After we were graciously greeted and seated, I browsed the menu looking for a new treat. Once our waitress told us about the specials, namely that the “quiche of the day” was Quiche Lorraine, I said: “Sold!” While waiting for the main dish, we sampled the plate of assorted marinated olives and beautiful Heirloom Tomato Salad with Basil Jell-O and Mozzarella. My entrée arrived with an ample wedge of beautiful quiche, and I took

Imagine being in a quaint café on the streets of Paris… my first bite with a satisfying “ah.” It was delicious. Created by Chef Christophe, it was the perfect mix of egg, four cheeses, ham and onion sitting on a light, flaky crust. The accompanying mixed greens dressed in Dijon vinaigrette also de64 stylemg.com - October 2012

lighted my palate. While I was busy devouring my lunch, my girlfriend was fairly quiet as she savored her Saumon Fume sur Baguette – smoked salmon on a sourdough baguette with dill crème fraiche. She was more than satisfied with her choice and also enjoyed the mixed greens with its fantastic dressing. The service at Bistro La Petite France

was exceptional, as well as the food. The restaurant serves lunch Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., dinner Thursday through Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m., and Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Refreshingly sweet and slightly spicy, each bite was crunchy and flavorful. 66 stylemg.com - October 2012

Crystal Basin Bistro It’s Good to Share by Janet Scherr Lisa Scott. All plates are $6 and feature unique flavor combinations. There are about a dozen to choose from, plus a soup and salad of the day. The Washington DC plate was a great place to start – mushroom caps stuffed with breadcrumbs and sausage, topped lightly with cheese and served in a crème sauce. We devoured the ‘shrooms and then sopped

up the rich sauce with the accompanying baguette slices. Although The Turlock – a grilled chicken breast slathered with pesto in a wrap – looked delicious, we opted for The P’ville, a hearty plate of roasted beef brisket served on Texas toast and topped with Gorgonzola crumbles. Rounding out the dish is a scoop of cheesy roasted red pepper orzo. Of all the plates we shared, The Hong Kong was our favorite. Two giant gingerwasabi shrimp were served on a bed of Asian slaw and fried wontons. Refreshingly sweet and slightly spicy, each bite was crunchy and flavorful. For dessert we savored grilled peaches with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, dusted with cinnamon and crowned with fresh basil. Knowing what I know now, next time it may be hard for me to share!

• 2 heaping tbsp. finely chopped fresh cilantro • 2 tsp. ground cumin • 1 tsp. sweet paprika • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional) • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 6 tbsp. olive oil • 4 boneless chicken breasts (about 2 lb.) cut into 3/4-to 1-inch cubes In a large mixing bowl, add the cilantro, cumin, paprika and cayenne pepper. Generously season with salt and pepper. Moisten with the oil and blend well. Add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover, refrigerate and marinate for 1 hour, turning occasionally. Prepare skewers with 6-8 cubes of chicken on each. The pieces should be just touching, not squashed tightly together. If using a grill pan, skillet or griddle, heat over mediumhigh heat. If using a barbecue, prepare a fire and heat until the coals are glowing. If using a broiler, preheat the broiler. Cook the brochettes, nudging them from time to time with

2011 MASON SAUVIGNON BLANC Randy Mason has been producing wine for more than 30 years (the first Mason wine was produced in 1993) and is known in the industry as a pioneer for producing some of the best California Sauvignon Blancs on the market. It was Mason’s vision to produce a high-quality wine and make it available at a fair market price. The fruit for this year’s Sauvignon Blanc came solely from a vineyard called Blockhouse – located in Yountville – which in itself is special and unusual, since typically grapes for Sauvignon Blancs at this price point (approximately $16 bottle) come from various sources. The vineyard is located at the heart of the valley’s floor, which enjoys cool evenings and warm days, making for excellent grapes. 2011 Mason Sauvignon Blanc embodies a very elegant style with amazing flavors of grapefruit, melon and fresh-cut grass. Fermented in 100-percent stainless steel tanks, it has a very distinctive nose, and overall is a true Napa-style Sauvignon Blanc that’s heralded for its varietal trueness and perfect balance. I like to enjoy this wine with an appetizer before dinner; it even goes well with hummus! — Richard Righton Owner, Bidwell Street Bistro in Folsom

Like Grilled Spicy Kefta Brochettes, these are a favorite throughout Morocco, referred to as snacks in street stalls and in simple cafes. They’re inexpensive, flavorful and quick to prepare. The chicken takes on a lovely golden hue from the cumin and sweet paprika. Calculate about four brochettes per person as part of a meal, accompanied by a few salads and plenty of bread.

f you think the nine cities encompassing the Palm Springs area would be a great retirement destination, well, you’d be right… and you’d also be wrong. The year-round sunshine, relatively slower-paced lifestyle and brutally hot summers (luckily it’s a dry heat!) does make the area – collectively known as the Coachella Valley – an attractive destination for retiring snowbirds. But since there’s no shortage of misters, pools and air conditioning, don’t let the heat keep you from a weekend getaway. Now through May, when the weather is spectacular, is the perfect time of year to indulge in some of the fabulous things to see and do – at a fraction of the high-season rates.

EXPERIENCE There are 112 golf courses, countless hiking trails and excellent resorts, spas and restaurants at your fingertips. One not-to-miss event for tennis lovers is the BNP Paribas Open – held every March in Indian Wells and known in tennis circles as “the fifth major,” as it gathers the world’s top professional players. The Tennis Garden at Indian Wells boasts the second largest tennis stadium in the world and is surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds. In March 2012, attendance topped 370,000 for the two-week combined ATP and WTP event. Tickets are on sale now for the 2013 tournament, to be held March 4-17.

If tennis isn’t your thing, music may be. Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held every April, is the go-to music festival. It’s like an annual Woodstock for the millennial generation, but less muddy!

UNWIND If your escape to the valley is about indulgence, then you’ll have no trouble finding a spa to suit your needs. After a day on the links or hardcore shopping in the El Paseo Shopping District, try the Aqua Well massage at the Miramonte Resort & Spa in Indian Wells, where you float weightlessly in a pool heated to your body temperature while your muscles are rhythmically massaged; the unique treatment leaves you relaxed and almost spiritually calm. Another fantastic venue is La Quinta Resort & Club, also in Indian Wells. This Waldorf Astoria property, originally built in 1926, covers 45 lushly manicured acres at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Golf, tennis, dining and a world-renowned spa combine for one of the most luxurious experiences available. The spa’s acclaimed HydraFacial is a new skin rejuvenation system that attracts both movie stars and locals to experience skin care on a whole new level. Even though Le Parker Méridien’s spa, PSYC (Palm Springs Yacht Club) has no body of water in which to dock your yacht, PSYC believes in the country club experience, which – according to their Web site – includes mixed doubles, a long steam and a stiff cocktail. Difficult to argue otherwise!

introducing Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Face in a Book exists for two reasons: for the love of books and for the love of the community. We are a general bookstore with all new books; in addition, we carry unique gift items, from travel accessories to journals and greeting cards. I’d always wanted to own a small business in our community, where I would have the opportunity to interact with people and offer them something special. While lamenting over the closing of Borders with a friend last summer, I recall telling her that bookstores were closing because people were spending too much time on Facebook and that they should get their “face…IN a book!” The name…and the idea stuck! How are you involved with the both the community and the customer? We are involved with the community in two ways. First, we carry items in the store from local authors – including Cindy Sample, Amber Garza, Lori Mortensen Tina Ferguson and others – and businesses. We also offer coffee and tea from local roasters El Dorado Coffee and Tea. Secondly, we are partnering with local community groups Hands for Hope and Run for Courage to carry their hats and T-shirts. Customers Face in a Book are the heartbeat of our store! We will do whatever we can to find just the right book for 4359 Town Center Boulevard people. If we don’t carry something, we have the ability to order nearly 9 million titles, Suite 113 and there is no charge for shipping items to the store. El Dorado Hills What’s your favorite childhood memory? 916-941-9401 Other kids had a favorite toy…I had books! A favorite memory is reading Nancy Drew getyourfaceinabook.com books while lying on my stomach in my father’s Ford pickup truck when it was winter. Outside it was freezing, but with the windows rolled up and the sunlight pouring in I was 100-percent cozy. You can never go wrong with a comfy seat and good book!

Tricia and Patrick Mummy

76 stylemg.com - October 2012

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? It found me. I’m originally from Amador County and received a baseball scholarship to San Diego State University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in athletic training. I was chronically injured my senior year, and the irony was no therapies helped me. When I graduated, I was hired at the Egoscue Method in San Diego, a clinic famous for fixing Jack Nicklaus’ back by addressing postural issues and not pain, which also helped relieve my pain. In 1997, I started Symmetry and have since received a patent for my software and the device I created, P.A.T. (Postural Assessment Tool), which measures postural deviations and plugs the information into the software to create individualized corrective exercise routines. Why is your staff the best in the business? I have a great situation in that my staff includes just me! Part of what I pride myself on is the personal touch I give my clients. I have another aspect of my business where I certify practitioners (massage therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, etc.) in Symmetry, so in essence I’m franchising my business to those who already have a staff, in order to expand and grow Symmetry. What’s your biggest job perk? Seeing my clients heal themselves and realizing they don’t have to rely on me to keep them out of pain. Also, I can make my own schedule in order to spend more time with my family. If you could be any other profession, what would it be? Playing for the Dodgers! I came close in college, hitting .390 and earning MVP my senior year, but ironically my injuries lead me to what I’m doing now and I have no regrets. And finally, customer service is…? Treating people as if they have purpose for your life – never take anything or anyone for granted.

Dina and Eddie Alexander

78 stylemg.com - October 2012

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? We are a friendly, community-oriented pet supply store. Now living in the Foothills, we established our original family-owned pet supply business more than 26 years ago. We recently found our one-of-a-kind “dream store,” which is on Green Valley Road, across from the Purple Place. We stock a variety of high-quality premium pet foods, treats, toys, crates, pens, collars, leashes, and now wild bird and patio décor specialties. We have never, nor will we ever, sell animals. We are proud supporters of local pet rescue organizations. After two start-up stints inside the corporate world, Dina and I knew that following our own hearts made the best business sense for us. Selecting the pet supply business was just a natural extension of who we were (and are): total pet lovers! After beginning small (via specialty dog and cat shows), we decided to take the scary brick and mortar plunge in 1987. Looking back, our timing wasn’t stellar as Dina was expecting our first child and money was more than just a little stretched. Though we had many slow and difficult days from the start, we felt fortunate for the wonderful number of affirming customers who stood by us. These customers and their pets are the driving force behind our business success; they are also an integral inspiration for our Folsom/El Dorado Hills location. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? Togs for Dogs and Cats Too is perhaps the proudest of its extensive history of community outreach. In addition to supporting numerous organizations – including rescues, SPCA, public/private school, daycares, the arts and many more – we’re especially blessed that we could step up to raise funds for a local infant born without functioning kidneys. I will never forget what we, the boy’s family, our customers, and the community at-large felt when almost one year later the boy was taken off dialysis and received a life-saving kidney donation. And finally, customer service is…? Everything! Do you know that our editorial is not paid for, nor can it be purchased? In fact, our Introducing and Dine reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Wendy Sipple at wendy@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? After buying a dry cleaning plant in Folsom, American Cleaners, in June 2000, the previous owner introduced The Pressing Edge, a mobile dry clean pick-up and delivery service. I wasn’t the one who founded the business; we actually bought the shop from the previous owner. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? American Cleaners and The Pressing Edge are involved in both the Folsom and El Dorado Hills Chambers of Commerce. Being a part of these organizations allows us to better connect with the area we advertise in, as well as teach us better skills to assist our customers. Why is your staff the best in the business? Our staff not only provides one of the highest quality cleaning techniques and the most time-efficient deadlines, but also treats every customer well, via service with a smile. Virgilio, Alma and Vincent Versoza What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Having the ability to push through each and every obstacle involved in business, and learning that life is not about yourself but serving all those around you, in any way you can. The Pressing Edge What’s your favorite local event that you go to? Folsom Family Fun Night and the local farmers’ market. 916-574-9558 Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? thepressingedge.com Jesus is the reason for all my smiles, all my service, and all my success. Without Him, I would have no coach, as well as no clear path to achieve my ultimate goal. Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? Regal Cinemas in El Dorado Hills. And finally, customer service is…? The best! Without our customers, we wouldn’t have anyone to serve. Without anyone to serve, we wouldn’t be the strong warriors we are today. We only have our customers to thank for our success, through our wonderful customer service!

T

wo monsters one night were talking About the scariest way to scare, How to fright and strike fear In anyone near, And cause people to leap from their chairs. “I like to start with a sneer,” said one. Said the other, “I like to start with a scowl.” “I whip out my claws.” “I snap with my jaws.” And they agreed one always should growl. One monster stood up on his hind legs, To show how he towered overhead. Broad-shouldered and tall, Green scales and all, He was good at bringing the dread.

The first beast then flicked out his long tongue; Like a towel it snapped through the room. Disgusting and slimy, And a little bit grimy, It left the walls all covered in goo. The second narrowed his one eye, Which sat like a jewel on his forehead. Then focusing in, That horrible lens Shot lightning that blew up a bed. While the smoke cleared away they cackled, And rolled on the floor with delight. Their throaty guffaws

And pounding of paws, Jangled the stars hung in the night. Then suddenly they grew quite quiet And held still, not twitching a tail. A loud knock on their door – Then three knocks once more. Was it a monster hunter, hot on their trail? No, it was something considerably less scary. To them, anyway – but not you or me. Because every grown monster Once was a youngster, And these two were still little, you see. The ruckus they made was disturbing Their parents one floor below; With the thuds and the laughing, And the booms and the cackling, It was ruining Dad’s favorite TV show.

monster mash A Spooktacular Poem by Tom Mailey 82 stylemg.com - October 2012

So their momma came stomping upstairs. It was she who rapped with such clout: “KNOCK IT OFF!” she bellowed. And to make them more mellow, She threatened them with a time-out. Well, that was enough for our two little beasts, Who sat smiling at the damage they’d caused: Goo on the door, A shattered bed on the floor, Pillows destroyed by their claws. And they both knew they needed a broom Or maybe two; there was so much to sweep. But such destruction is tiring To a small monster’s wiring, So instead... They fell fast asleep.
