Welcome!

Welcome, and thank you for visiting the Harris Center for the Arts. Whether you’re joining us here today to see one of the six national Broadway tours visiting the Center this spring, a musical icon like Sergio Mendes, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Russian National Ballet Theatre, Five Irish Tenors, Indian sitarist Anoushka Shankar, country music maverick John Anderson, guest speaker Alice Waters, or Japan’s amazing techno-dance company

The center also partners with a wide array of community organizations that make the Center their home. One such organization, CORE Contemporary Dance, is the subject of the Partner Focus on page 15. The Center also nurtures the work of many young artists, including those studying here at Folsom Lake College. See the College Spotlight (page 14) for the story of the College’s Career Technology Education Programs. All of these entities, working together, create the diverse calendar of events that is the Harris Center season (pages 64 & 65).

enra, you can rest assured that you are experiencing some of the world’s top talent in one of the most intimate professional performing arts settings. Bringing artists from around the world to share their artistry is just one way that the Harris Center delivers on its mission of enriching the lives of people throughout the capital region, of providing venues and opportunities to experience artistic work, celebrate cultural traditions and participate in the creative process.

If it’s your first time to the Center, we’re glad that you’ve decided to give us a try, and hope you’ll be back once you’ve experienced a great show, up close, in one of our three state-of-the art venues (page 9). If you’re returning, you may be one of the over 3,000 Harris Center patrons that took part in a community survey on the Center’s fifth anniversary and told us that they overwhelmingly feel the Center is a high caliber regional facility with affordably priced programs of interest to this community, that the center is something they are proud of and that it has been an excellent investment. And yet, having just opened a few years ago, we’re really just getting going. Ultimately, the ability of the Center to fully realize the potential inherent in its design and intent will require additional investment. Please consider joining your neighbors (pages 5455) in supporting the Center through an annual membership donation or seat naming (page 53), corporate sponsorship (page 58), or legacy gift (page 55). Ticket revenues alone simply do not cover all the costs of providing a world-class arts center; we need people like you to help out, to further expand the reach and impact of the Harris Center in this community. Again, thank you for attending today’s performance. We hope you’ll enjoy this great show, up close, and return for many more in the years ahead.

About Folsom Lake College Three Campuses, One Mission Main Folsom Campus

Rancho Cordova Center

El Dorado Center

Since receiving its initial accreditation in 2004, Folsom Lake College has provided exceptional educational opportunities to the growing communities of eastern Sacramento and western El Dorado counties. The college currently serves approximately 8,750 students each semester at the main Folsom campus, the El Dorado Center in Placerville, and the Rancho Cordova Center. Each of these sites has its own identity, its own personality. Due to tremendous growth of the Fo l s o m re g i o n , t h e m a i n Fo l s o m campus quickly expanded to keep up with the demand for quality education. The modern 151-acre campus is also active with social, cultural, and athletic opportunities for its student body. The Falcon’s Roost is the center of student life and home to the college’s energetic student government and clubs. The

renowned Harris Center for the Arts allows talented students to train with the best in a professional setting. And the growing athletic programs have brought competition and camaraderie to the Falcons athletics complex. The El Dorado Center is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills. This scenic and serene campus is wellequipped to serve the area’s recent high school graduates along with a more mature audience devoted to lifelong learning. The site is also home to two unique community partnerships, the Cameron Park Rotary Club Community Observatory and the Sherwood Demonstration Garden. The center is outfitted to meet the educational needs of students both in and out of the classroom.

The Rancho Cordova Center facility, located at the corner of Folsom Blvd. and Paseo Dr. and across the street from the Mather Field/Mills Station light rail, serves as an educational hub for this close knit and diverse community. Students can pursue their general education requirements or learn English as a second language. This central location also enables the college to adeptly respond to local and state business needs by developing programs that teach the fundamental skills that are vital to working in the public sector. Three unique locations. One highly regarded institution. We are proud to say that our students, faculty, and staff all have “falcontude.” We hope you do, too!

Doug Hawkins RN (Administrator) and Carole Mann LVN (Medicare Specialist)

We Make Home Visits Our Goal is Continuity of Care We ensure that when residents are discharged home their care continues to match the care received at Western Slope. Upon discharge Doug and Carole will come visit in about one week. “I enjoy following the patient from the hospital environment and into their homes. It’s rewarding to see their positive health transformations and successes,” states Carole. MediCare pays for a variety of health care needs but is limited to the amount of home care people receive. This can be an issue for many. “We visit the home to offer help and solutions. We charge nothing. It’s a free service”, Doug added. Former resident, CeCe Wind said, “It was a wonderful experience when I stayed at Western Slope, and the care and compassion continues now that I am at home. I love that Doug checks on me.” Marshall Hospital has partnered with Western Slope to ensure Quality Health Care. “We ensure when patients are released from Marshall to Western Slope that we continue to follow the Plans of Care put into place and continue those plans when they return home,” Carole Mann continues, “Being able to wonderfully enrich and serve our community is what it’s all about.”

Miracles and milestones Bennett Figone and twin sister Savannah weighed barely a pound each at birth. Born at just over 23 weeks gestation, to a mother whose earlier bout with aggressive cancer had made pregnancy a long shot, the micropreemies fought to survive as they were delivered by air ambulance to the Level IV NICU at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. Here, a multispecialty team including neonatal surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons and exceptional nurses worked together to save Bennett from a ruptured liver, brain swelling and other life-threatening challenges, until he and Savannah were cleared to go home some 132 days later. Today these little miracles are reaching milestones – and melting hearts along the way.

Spotlight on Folsom Lake College: Career Technical Education – Technical Theatre

The elaborate and ornate set for the Falcon’s Eye Theatre fall production of You Can’t Take It With You was created by students in the Theatre Department’s Stagehand Practices Certificate program.

The Theatre & Cinema Arts Department at Folsom Lake College has developed a reputation for innovative and technically stunning productions, and the newly-launched CTE Certificate in Stagehand Practices is part of that success. “CTE” stands for “Career Technical Education,” an option for students who are planning to directly enter the workforce after college. The mission of the CTE area at Folsom Lake College is to respond to identified needs of business and industry leaders through the development of instructional programs that address the training needs, issues, and technical assistance preferences of area employers. The degrees and certificates are assessed and evaluated annually by Advisory Boards, composed of constituent groups, including business and industry, students, faculty, unions, and more. Funding from the federal government for CTE programs, called “Perkins Funding,” has helped the Theatre Department purchase cutting-edge equipment and technology so students can enter the job force with desirable technical skills. At Folsom Lake College, students train on a CNC router, 3D printer, and the newest lighting equipment on the market. In the area of technical theatre, Folsom Lake College has embarked on a unique “regional” CTE collaboration with Sierra College in Rocklin. By meeting together annually with a shared advisory board comprised of leaders from industry and education along with students, the two colleges are better able to receive feedback on our programs, assess our effectiveness, and ensure that our students are getting the training they need to be successful in a career in theatre. For example, one recommendation from the advisory board was that employers are looking for employees who can think critically rather than simply follow directions.

“Our collaboration with Sierra College is beneficial to our students,” says Ian Wallace, assistant professor of theatre and head of the technical theatre program at Folsom Lake College. “Not only are we able to gather together potential employers and industry experts to help us improve our program and keep it up to date, but we can share ideas with a sister college and learn from each other.” In Folsom Lake College’s Stagehand Practices certificate, students take courses in stagecraft, lighting, and design. Additionally, internships with local theatres and work experience opportunities in support of touring shows at the Harris Center give students exposure to the real world of professional production and the realities of a life in the theatre. Partner Focus: CORE Contemporary Dance Community Partners Some of the most respected arts organizations in the region have made the Center their home. These partners share the goal of improving the quality of life in the region by providing access to more art for more audiences in the newest arts facility in the region.

CORE’s Mission is to INSPIRE, EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN, & PROMOTE the EXPRESSION of the human experience through movement. CORE Contemporary Dance (originally CORE Dance Collective) was founded in 2007 by Kelli Leighton and a group of dancers who wanted to do more than just “go through the motions” of choreography. CORE stands for “Collection Of Real Experiences" and, by drawing from the pain or triumph of their own life experiences, the dancers give their performances genuine emotional depth. Being a member of the company challenges dancers both physically and emotionally, as they share their most vulnerable moments during the creative process. As human beings, we all feel the struggle of joy and sorrow, success and failure, and love and hate in our daily lives. This struggle constitutes our common bond with the rest of humanity, and the success of CORE results in part from its recognition and celebration of this universal connection that we have with each other. On March 17 &18, CORE wraps up its 10th Anniversary season with Redefined which will celebrate CORE's vibrant history through revitalization of past works while also illustrating the bright future of dance in our region. Redefined features Artistic Director Kelli Leighton’s acclaimed work, After the Storm (debut: 2011), as well brand as

new works by Ms. Leighton and renowned dance-artist Mia Michaels. Ms. Leighton is recognized throughout the dance industry for her exceptional creative voice and athletic, contemporary movement style. Audience members of all ages should come prepared to “feel something”—whatever that may be! To learn more, visit www.corecontemporarydance.org.

Abroad, these include the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, Philharmonic and Philharmonia, Moscow State Symphony, Munich’s Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Philharmonic Orchestras of Amsterdam and Oslo, as well as Stockholm, the Orchestra of La Scala and NHK Symphony of Japan. In the United States, engagements have included the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Siegel has collaborated with many of the pre-eminent conductors of our time: Sir Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Neeme Järvi, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson Thomas, and David Zinman, as well as legendary maestros of the past, including Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Eugene Ormandy, Sir George Solti, William Steinberg, Klaus Tennstedt and Yevgeny Svetlanov. In addition to his solo appearances, Jeffrey Siegel presents Keyboard Conversations®, a brilliantly polished concert-withcommentary, that combines captivating comments with virtuoso performances of piano masterpieces. The concert concludes with a lively Q & A. New listeners discover an informal, entertaining and instantly accessible introduction to the magnificent piano repertoire. Seasoned music lovers enjoy an enriched, more focused listening experience. Ongoing series are presented in numerous American cities, among them New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Scottsdale, Minneapolis, Houston, Dallas, Denver and Washington, D. C. Some of these venues have been presenting Keyboard Conversations® for more than forty years—testimony to Jeffrey Siegel's artistry, innovative format and loyal fans. Keyboard Conversations® continue for the seventh season at London’s Kings Place.

The Denver Post “Jeffrey Siegel has everything: massive technique, musical sensitivity and character, wide tonal resources, immense reserves of power, and the ability to communicate.” Los Angeles Times

Please visit Mr. Siegel’s website at keyboardconversations.com for further information.
