AN EVENING WITH JD SOUTHER Grammy-nominated JD Souther has penned countless hits for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison, James Taylor, Don Henley, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, and Brooks and Dunn, while also finding success as a solo artist. On his latest studio album, Tenderness, Souther creates a perfect balance of understated jazz with the ineffable pop narratives that have been the backbone of much of his greatest work.

GIN BLOSSOMS 6
For more than two decades, Gin Blossoms have defined the sound of jangle pop. From their late 80s start as Arizona’s top indie rock outfit, the Tempe-based combo has drawn critical applause and massive popular success for their trademark brand of chiming guitars, introspective lyricism, and irresistible melodies. Gin Blossoms soon unfurled a chain of crossover favorites spanning five different formats, from “Hey Jealousy” and “Until I Fall Away” to “Follow You Down” and the GRAMMY®-nominated “As Long As It Matters,” earning the band sales in excess of 10 million in the US alone.

OTTMAR LIEBERT & LUNA NEGRA
Ottmar Liebert’s incredible global success often seems like a simple outgrowth of his cultural background and powerful wanderlust in his formative years. Born in Germany to a Chinese-German father and Hungarian mother, he began playing guitar at 11, and traveled extensively through Europe and Asia intent on fully absorbing each musical tradition he encountered. In 1989, he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico and founded his band Luna Negra. Nouveau Flamenco was born, beginning with a self-produced local release called Marita: the rest is history.

SONG OF LAHORE
The amazing roots of the Sachal Ensemble (performing Nov.18; see page 24) are uncovered in this extraordinary documentary film. As political tension, ethnic division, war and corruption tore apart the cultural fabric of Pakistan, the town of Lahore — once a haven for musicians and other artists — ceased as a cultural mecca. That is, until the establishment of Sachal Studios in 2004 as a place where traditional musicians could create again, if at great personal risk. How musicians from this rebel recording studio came to play jazz with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center is the stuff of legend — and lends to some thrilling film making by Academy Award-wnner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy & Andy Schocken.

AMAZING GRACE A New Broadway Musical
The awe-inspiring true story behind the world’s most beloved song — captured in a Broadway musical. “The hymn, which many associate with the civil rights movement, was written in the 18th century by an Englishman who worked in the slave-trading business. Curious to know more?” (New York Times). Torn between following in the footsteps of his father — a slave trader — or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart, John Newton embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas, accompanied by his slave, Thomas. That journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning that inspires a blazing anthem of hope. “Inspirational, beautiful, emotional, exhilarating” (Associated Press).
