This will be the sixth year I hit the streets to go Christmas caroling with friends. What began as someone’s (merry and) bright idea to gather a small group and spread holiday cheer across town is now a yearly event where 20-plus people go door to door belting out festive favorites. Though most of us can’t carry a tune and barely know the words to “Jingle Bells,” it’s a jolly good time and has turned into an annual occasion that makes Christmas feel complete. Whether your holiday traditions include binge watching Elf or binge drinking hot toddies, ch o p p i n g d ow n a Christmas tree or fluffing up a fake one, and baking special sweet treats (pfeffernüsse for yours truly) or consuming tons of tamales, one thing’s clear: There’s nothing dull about December. There’s also nothing dull about this month’s issue. It was a blast putting it together, and we hope our passion is apparent on each and every page. In lieu of dedicating the entire feature to presents, we broke tradition (yes, sometimes that’s OK to do!) and created an overall guide to the holidays— full of spirited cocktails “Have a heart that from local restaurants, never hardens, and the best and brightest a temper that never ‘hoods to view lights at, tires, and a touch our favorite tree farms, that never hurts.”— 10 can’t-miss events, Charles Dickens and 30-plus gifts (many locally made) at various price points; in other words, it’s everything you need to make the “Holiday Spectacular.” For all the goods, turn to page 35. To truly make it “the most wonderful time of the year,” I encourage you to focus on family and friends, work a little less (sorry, Boss) and give a little bit more. From paying for the person’s coffee behind you and donating to your local food bank (check out Emily Peter’s piece on page 14 for ways to help), to surprising a neighbor with cookies, something tells me it’ll make your day, and the recipients, just a little bit sweeter. oomis resident Jim Crosthwaite grew up in Auburn, the eldest of four brothers.
His father was a truck driver who would be on the road for long stretches of time, so he spent a lot of time entertaining his brothers and coming up with activities to keep them occupied. Looking back, Crosthwaite credits that experience with his later gravitation toward leadership positions. “Being the oldest brother made me the team captain,” he shares. “Most of my adult life, I’ve managed people and worked with teams.” During college, Crosthwaite started working for the Auburn Recreation and Parks District—the perfect way to combine his love of the outdoors with his outgoing personality. He went on to spend over 30 years in the tourism and events field, working first for the City of Roseville, and later, Rocklin. Over the years, he’s coached Little League, run summer camps, and organized dozens of community events. One of his favorites is the now-annual Woofstock in Rocklin—a ’60s-inspired festival for families and their

DID YOU KNOW? // Chestnuts were one of the Native Americans’ most prized foods and were a staple in their diet. Chestnut purée is one of the few products that still maintains large amounts of the same vitamins, when cooked, as found in the fresh nut.
NUTRITION // It’s December, and we’re hearing all our favorite holiday songs, including “The Christmas Song,” which includes the memorable opening line: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. These flavorful nuts are more than just a holiday food sold at street fairs, however, as they supply a feast of nutrients. They’re low in fat, high in fiber and packed with minerals (manganese, potassium, copper, phosphorus, magnesium and iron) and vitamins—mainly vitamin C, but also B6, thiamin, folate and riboflavin. In a season full of sweet treats, a roasted chestnut rises above as a healthful alternative. Starchy, sweet, and rich in flavor, chestnuts are tree nuts; each one is enclosed in a spiny husk, which cracks open to reveal the brown-hulled nut. Preregistration is not required for volunteers; they simply ask that you arrive on time by 8 a.m. at the Placer Food Bank (8284 Industrial Avenue) in Roseville and have patience, as the weather often slows down deliveries. ocklin resident Trisa Swerdlow makes gorgeous fused glass jewelry and art, in addition to home and garden items, and is currently focused on learning new techniques like welding, as well as creating larger-scale pieces. With her recent appointment to Rocklin’s Art Task Force, she’s eager to promote public art and art programs throughout the city and surrounding communities. “I feel art is a powerful form of expression that connects us all,” shares Swerdlow. “Any emotion or experience can be communicated with art, [and] I strive to use this to enhance people’s lives.” As a member of Loomis’ High Hand Art Gallery, Swerdlow is also serving as the event coordinator for their Steampunk Victorian Holiday Faire on December 2-3, featuring 50 costumed artists and their work, live music, and photos with Steampunk Santa. HLB: HOW’D YOU GET STARTED IN GLASS FUSING? TS: About six years ago, my husband gave me a gift certificate for a glass fusing class at Rainbow Glass in Sacramento; [after taking it], I was hooked! Since then, I’ve studied glass fusing and painting techniques with some of the best teachers in the country and now teach classes myself.
HLB: WHY DO YOU PREFER GLASS AS YOUR MEDIUM? TS: My parents are both artists, and I’ve always been a maker. I’ve worked in a variety of mediums [and even made] a ball gown out of candy wrappers for a local candy store; as soon as I started working in glass, however, I knew I’d found my ultimate medium. There are so many different ways to use it, and I love the way it interacts with light, how it can be functional or decorative, and combined with other elements, such as enamels, to create your own imagery. HLB: AT WHAT POINT DID YOU START VIEWING YOURSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST? TS: I started selling things I was making to friends. They all told me I should [have my art] in stores and galleries, so I finally got the courage to submit some work to a show at Blue Line Arts. [One of my pieces] sold, and it was very gratifying. I was eventually accepted at the High Hand Art Gallery in Loomis and Gallery IQ Delicate Flower in Rocklin, and now have work at both locations on a regular basis. HLB: HOW DO YOU HANDLE DAYS WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL CREATIVE? TS: It’s inevitable that an artist [will have] a blocked period, and I’ve learned not to force it. If I’m not in a creative frame of mind I do something else until I’m feeling inspired. Sometimes I’ll spend time cleaning up my studio, which always needs to be done; if being in my studio doesn’t inspire me, at least my workspace will be ready when I do feel like creating! estivities at the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk in William Land Park were ending when three-year-old Landon Wolff found a clearing on the lawn and began hip-hopping to the music, hamming it up for his cheering audience. Others joined him briefly—his mother, his toddler sister, and friends—but Landon remained a motion machine with a smile. A generation or two ago, children with Nancy and MacKenzie Muir Down syndrome, like Landon, didn’t often dance in the sunshine. Many didn’t leave the hospital with their parents. When 16-year-old Gabby Prieto was born, her mother, Heather, heard no cheers, but was advised she could put her baby in an institution. “It was like a dire situation,” Heather recalls. Scared but filled with love, she took Gabby home. A person with Down syndrome has three copies of the 21st chromosome instead of the normal two. Humans typically receive 23 pairs of chromosomes—one of each pair from each parent. The extra chromosome causes physical changes, such as small stature and low muscle tone, as well as intellectual disabilities and, often, health problems. It’s the most common genetic disorder, occurring once in about every 700 births. Abilities vary widely, but research has found that when these children grow up in families with education and stimulation, they adjust better and achieve higher intelligence levels than kids placed in institutions.

Shortly after Gabby’s birth, Heather connected with two other families of children with Down syndrome. Noting the benefits of their shared support, the three families formed the Down Syndrome Information Alliance (DSIA), a nonprofit based in Roseville that currently serves seven Sacramento area counties and provides services and information to Down syndrome families through various programs, including a “Down Comforter Package” full of resources for new parents that’s presented at the hospital, parent mentors, a newsletter, speakers, workshops and events. The group also advises medical professionals. Their annual Step Up event is its sole fund-raiser; this year’s walk on October 8 earned nearly $35,000. Today, Gabby is a thriving sophomore at Rio Americano High School and has been educated with her same-age friends since kindergarten. MacKenzie Muir is also a sophomore (at Whitney High School) and is on the cheer squad, loves school dances and was elected homecoming princess. “She blows us out of the water each year with her abilities,” her mother, Nancy, says. All the parents Heather knows are proud of their loved ones with Down syndrome, but she says, it’s normal to feel afraid and even grieve when the baby is born. She urges new parents to contact DSIA for emotional support, as well as information on resources, such as early-intervention programs— which some babies, like MacKenzie, start as soon as they’re six weeks old. “Sixteen years ago,” Heather says, “information was very limited. Most of us were scared, so we understand new parents’ fears. But life with a Down syndrome child will be as great as you thought it would be—it will just be different.” downsyndromeinfo.org

Juniper, magnolia leaves, spruce or evergreen boughs and trimmings can be used on a mantel or accent table to add a green touch. Add some fresh pine sprigs to a metallic bowl for a truly merry touch. You might also consider using bare branches for height, elements of birch tree, or fresh fruit like cranberries, pomegranates and deep red apples. If you’re entertaining, add a few small pots of rosemary for place settings or serve cheeses on thick log slices. 3 / USE ITEMS YOU ALREADY HAVE Unearth some items you typically pack away for the rest of the year, like your grandmother’s china or that silver tea service. or the throngs of avid fans of Ettore’s Bakery and Café in Sacramento, the wait is over—Ettore’s Roseville location is open for business. I first became acquainted with the original café through two of their most ardent fans: my parents. My father would use any excuse to travel from Lincoln to enjoy his favorite pastry and breakfast (breakfast optional), commute traffic be damned. The new Ettore’s kept all the qualities of the original locale and added a few upgrades, including a more substantial outdoor patio, upstairs dining, a banquet room,

and a beautifully tiled gas-fired pizza oven. The kitchen is pumping out everything from European pastries, breakfast favorites and café-style sandwiches and salads, to pizzas on handcrafted dough, and whitetablecloth-worthy dinner entrées. I sampled a couple of the latter on my recent visit, starting with a seasonal roasted beet salad (available on a rotating basis). If you’re a roasted beet fan like me, you’ll enjoy this colorful, wintry plate of goodness that included earthy, roasted beet cubes, salty feta, crunchy pine nuts, baby greens, and perfectly tart pickled red onions in a light vinaigrette. The menu description of the next two entrées made them impossible to pass up—rotisserie chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and broccolini in au jus, and red wine braised lamb shank with baby carrots, pearl onions and peas. The wood-fired rotisserie chicken (1/2 chicken) was moist, crispy (thanks to it being skin-on) and well-seasoned. Perched in a bath of aromatic chicken au jus, it put every store-bought version to shame. The lamb shank was the evening’s big hit—judging by the number of orders coming out of the kitchen— and for good reason. Cooked to perfection and paired with a red wine jus, it was a dish I wish more restaurants would feature. My only complaint was I wanted more of the delicious au jus to pour over the creamy roasted garlic mashers (OK,
not really a complaint, I’m just a gravy junkie). So you may have heard Ettore’s makes a few desserts? I pretended to be healthy by first ordering the four-inch fruit tart—a thin pie crust layered with chocolate, pastry cream and, here’s the healthy part, fruit. No harm there right? I figured I might as well try the chocolate chewy cookie, too—it is, afterall, their best seller. Made with walnuts, egg whites and cocoa powder, these melt-in-your-mouth bites can lead to a chocolate addiction. Yep, tomorrow‘s always a good day to start that diet!

hot dogs—just ask the constant flow of people who pass through every day. Before you even enter, the doors promise fresh hot buns that are housebaked. That’s a win right there. Once inside, you’ll find a large “Moodle Doodle” scribble board for all your artistic endeavors; clean, bright interiors; and a simple, but delightful menu of good ol’ American fast food that’s made from quality ingredients—non-GMO buns; fresh, never-frozen ground Angus beef patties; and milkshakes with real ice cream. I tried the Mooyah Cheeseburger and it came with a perfectly cooked patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and a tangy yet sweet Mooyah sauce on a potato bun. On spotting the boxes of Idaho potatoes in the corner, I ordered the Half and Half Fries (shareable size) that were equal parts regular and sweet potato. Hand cut and cooked in trans-fat free oil, they turned out to be my favorite part of lunch. I was feeling especially “vanilla” that day—which was a good thing, because vanilla is my favorite—so I ordered a small Vanilla Milkshake with whipped cream and a cherry on top…because, why not? The thick shake, alongside my tasty burger and sinful fries, made for one happy meal…just the kind I like. Seasonal Recipe and Beer Pairing GREEK CASSEROLE “PASTITSIO” 1/2 cup olive oil 2 lbs. ground beef 1/4 cup red wine 1 1/2 cups tomato sauce 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 yellow onion, minced

Salt and pepper, to taste 1/2 tsp. allspice 1 tsp. dried cumin 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 package macaroni or penne pasta *4 tbsp. bread crumbs
1 stick unsalted butter 4 egg whites, beaten 1 3/4 cups grated Parmesan cheese Parsley, to garnish *I make my own by putting a loaf of French bread in the blender.
BÉCHAMEL SAUCE
2 sticks unsalted butter 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 quart milk, warmed 8 egg yolks, beaten 2 tsp. ground nutmeg Salt and pepper, to taste Heat a large pan over medium heat with olive oil. Add in the ground beef and cook until the beef is pink (about 5 minutes). Add in the wine, tomato sauce, garlic, onion, parsley,
cinnamon, salt and pepper, allspice, cumin and oregano. Simmer for about 10 minutes. While the sauce is simmering, boil the water for the pasta. When the pasta is done, rinse under cool water and drain. Set aside. Stir the bread crumbs into the meat sauce to absorb the liquids. Remove the pan from the heat. Melt 1/2 cup of butter in the pasta pot, and mix with the pasta, beaten egg whites, and 1 cup of cheese. Brush a baking dish or lasagna dish with olive oil and place half the pasta on the bottom. Add the meat filling to the top of the pasta, making sure it’s evened out. Repeat the same steps. Preheat the oven to 350-degrees Fahrenheit and prepare the béchamel sauce. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add flour and whisk frequently to make a smooth roux or paste. Cook the mixture for about a minute, making sure not to burn it. Add the warm milk and whisk. Simmer on medium heat until the sauce thickens. Remove from the heat and whisk in the beaten egg yolks. Add the nutmeg and salt and pepper. Pour the béchamel sauce over the casserole, and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and let cool. Cut in squares and serve with chopped parsley over the top. Yields about 24 servings.

As a child, I grew up in a Disney-loving family in Southern California, and my eyes always shined the brightest as the princesses passed in the parades. In 2005, I was cast as one of my favorite characters at the Magic Kingdom. After moving to Northern California to marry my husband, we started The Fairy Godmother Events to bring the magic to children here!
I’m a master metatronia energy healer and have advanced certification from both the Metatronia Foundation of Light and the International School of Clairvoyance. I’ve always had an interest and ability in the metaphysical, as well as a passion for service. By developing my skills as a clairvoyant and energy channel early in life, I was lead to this healing modality.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
Through the magic and whimsy of these characters, our generous cast has been able to impact the lives of thousands of local families over the past eight years. We are the lucky ones—getting to love on families when they celebrate at parties, and also as they grieve and search for hope through dozens of local organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
I create a confidential, open relationship with my clients to foster a deep trust and sense of allowing.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of? My hubby and I married young and started our family just a year later. As a mother and wife in my early 20s—with two budding businesses we created as a family—we've always leaned heavily on each other and are best friends. Our daughters are a reflection of our love and grit as a family, and I'm so proud of the little ladies they’re becoming.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? My hubby makes a mean pizza at our restaurant Campelli's, and he's pretty cute, too. When I'm not having my daily slice, you can find us in the back left booth at Carmelita's; they have the best carnitas and margaritas!
What life accomplishments are you most proud of? Healing from breast cancer, seven surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and the upheaval both within and without that changed my life forever. I’ve grown to view that illness as one of the most powerful learning experiences in my life, which resulted in unimaginable personal growth and expansion.
Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My husband. He always seems to know how to approach and deal with every situation in a pragmatic and compassionate manner.
What’s your biggest job perk? Experiencing the healing energy myself while channeling it for clients.
What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Vitality Bowls, for healthy food when I’m on the run.
