I’ve always loved discovering new dining destinations. Although it’s easy to play it safe with a trip to Chili’s and order a dish you know and love (cue the “Baby Back Ribs” jingle), there’s something special about supporting a small business where the chef—who might also be the owner—clearly puts passion into every plate. Plus, you never know when you might find a new foodie favorite. I recently stumbled upon a Mediterranean market that doubles as a Laughter is deli (Babylon City Market) brightest in the and ordered the crispiest, place where most authentic falafel food is.” fritters to ever hit my lips. —Irish Proverb Tucked inside still-warm, made-to-order samoon (Iraqi flatbread) with a generous spread of creamy hummus and fresh veggies, I was so smitten by the sandwich (and the $3.49 price tag) that I returned the following weekend…and the weekend after that. Whether falafel makes you say “yuck” or “yum”—I urge you all to break out of your restaurant rut and dig into our region’s food scene. Need some ideas? For the third year in a row, we asked Style staffers to share their most memorable meals out, and in our feature, “30+ Must-Order Eats and Drinks,” we dish out the picks. It’s a perfect guide to getting your grub on locally. From blink-andyou’ll-miss-it bakeries, to new kids on the restaurant block, and established eateries that have been serving the community for 20-plus years, there’s bound to be a bite (and cocktail) for all. Hungry for more? In Taste, we have the recipe to make Fried Chicken with Buttermilk Slaw, and a beer pairing to boot; and in The Hit List we present our “6 Favorite Sandwiches” that’ll have you pining for a picnic. Once you’ve finally had your fill, flip to the Calendar for a jam-packed month of events that run the gamut from fancy fundraisers to family-friendly festivals; and The 10 Spot for “St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations,” featuring local, creative ways to pay homage to the holiday. As always, I’d love to hear from you— what you like, dislike and want to see more of in our magazine. Drop me a line at megan@ stylemg.com; and if you happen to see me in line at one of our area eateries, please say hello. Bon appétit! — Megan megan@stylemg.com

Eileen Speaker grew up in the Bay Area but moved to the East Coast in grade school, and it wasn’t until many years later that she finally had the opportunity to return to her home state. Prior to moving to Roseville, she and her husband, Joe, had a long-distance relationship for three years, as both of them completed graduate school on opposite sides of the country. It wasn’t easy, but these days, the couple is happily reunited—not to mention the proud parents of two-year-old daughter, Delia. “California always felt like home,” Speaker shares. “My parents have roots [here], so my mom likes to joke that it was all part of a master plan to marry a native Californian.” Speaker currently works as the grants manager at Placer Community Foundation,

Helping local donors carry out their charitable wishes. “You don’t have to be a millionaire or a billionaire to make a difference,” she explains. “I love seeing the generosity of local people. WHAT’S IN SEASON: ASPARAGUS One of the first foods to signal spring at the farmers’ market is asparagus. While the most common type is green, you might also see two other hues—white, which is more delicate, and purple, which is smaller and fruitier in flavor. No matter which type you chose, asparagus is a delicious, versatile vegetable that can be prepared many ways, including raw in salads. Loaded with nutrients, it’s a good source of fiber and folate, plus vitamins A, C, E and K, as well as chromium, a trace mineral that enhances the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream to the cells. What’s more, it’s a natural diuretic, helping release fluid and rid the body of excess salts.

combat the woodiness of an older stalk. Uncooked asparagus will stay fresh in your refrigerator for three or four days if kept cool and damp. Store spears upright in a container with the stems resting in an inch of water, and then cover them loosely with a plastic bag; change the water if it gets cloudy.

DID YOU KNOW? A recipe for cooking asparagus is in one of the oldest surviving book of recipes, Apicius’s third-century AD, De Re Coquinaria , Book III. Asparagus has been used as a vegetable and as medicine. It didn’t become available in America until around 1850 and used to be considered a delicacy because of its short growing season; thankfully, modern horticulture has made it much more accessible to everyone.

A Feast for the Eyes

by HEATHER L. BECKER

Known for her illustrative work in The Art of Real Food cookbook, Paula Amerine often paints food and farm scenes, using oils, acrylics and mixed media. Displaying her work at OLAS Studio as well as Sparrow Gallery, Amerine is busy creating artwork to be used by Aubur n’s One Book One Community to help advertise their event this year, as well as preparing for General Gomez’s California exhibit next month. “I’m well respected for the artwork I produce and people have been very supportive—[even putting my paintings] in their homes,” says Amerine, who’s passionate

about advocating for local farmers through her artwork. “I have worked hard to create a volume of work that captures the spirit of where I live in Placer County.” HLB: TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE STUDYING ART IN SPAIN AS A TEENAGER. PA: My parents hired a Spanish painter to teach me oil painting, so I’d take a bus into Madrid near the Prado Art Museum on Saturday mornings. I’d arrive early due to bus schedules, giving me time to have a creamy hot chocolate before stopping at an art supply store. My teacher’s apartment was very small and always photos by DANTE FONTANA

The experience allowed me the independence to learn that I could produce artwork when support and instruction were provided.

HLB: HOW DID YOUR TIME ABROAD HAVE AN IMPACT ON YOUR ART? PA: I was in a college prep program and couldn’t fit art classes into my daily school schedule, so I’m grateful my parents supported this additional enrichment. I think these lessons inspired me to study art history at the university level, having learned the importance of history on the choices we make in our personal lives. I was intrigued that this artwork was preserved for the future, and that it was of such value that artists spent hours, even lifetimes, striving to better [their] technique and communicate powerful messages. Above (clockwise from top left): Corn, Eat the Apricots First, Farmers’ Market Eggs, Three Pomegranates

HLB: DO YOU HAVE RECURRING THEMES IN YOUR WORK? PA: My recent themes are local produce and farm animals. I hope people learn what grows in our region and how fortunate we are to live where there’s such an abundance of real food. [Because of my work], folks have learned the names of fruits they never knew existed or how great that fruit tastes. Even different types of potatoes are exciting to paint, because of the many shapes, colors and textures. I like to think I advocate for farmers and work toward educating people about how their lives can be enhanced by seeking out April 1-2 – ArtFest. what grows in a field next to their home. Rumor Has It

5 Health Myths, Debunked

by KOURTNEY JASON

1

myth Antiperspirant causes breast cancer. truth Antiperspirants—which reduce underarm sweat—and

deodorants—which cover up odors—do not cause breast cancer, says Dan Herron, MD, director of Women’s Imaging at Mercy Imaging Center. “This myth may persist [since] we ask women not to use either prior to a mammogram, [as] the particles they contain can falsely look like calcium deposits on the mammogram and raise a false alarm of cancer,” he explains. “The Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2002 reported on a study that showed no increased breast cancer risk in women who used antiperspirants or deodorants. Additionally, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports no evidence that aluminum—the active ingredient in antiperspirants—nor the infrequently added paraben preservatives cause breast cancer.”

Eating fish during pregnancy

“Fish is important for the brain development of a baby. However, highmercury fish like swordfish and shark should be avoided,” says Katherine Gillogley, MD, division head of OB/GYN at Mercy Medical Group, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation. “A British study published in 2007 showed that children of women who ate no or less fish during their pregnancy had a greater chance

myth You can get the flu from the flu vaccine. truth Ashley Sens, MD, and Department of Pediatrics

chair at Dignity Health Medical Foundation’s Davis clinic, clarifies what it really means when you say “the flu.” According to Sens, “influenza is a respiratory illness caused specifically by the influenza virus [that] causes high fever and a severe cough and can cause pneumonia.” That said, you won’t get the flu after getting the flu vaccine. “In a randomized double-blind study, volunteers were either given a flu vaccine injection or a salt-water injection. The only difference in reaction between the two groups was the group who received the vaccine had more soreness and redness at the injection site,” she says. “There was no difference between the groups in terms of fever, muscle aches and pains, cough or illness of any kind.” With few exceptions, everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season, she says.

4

myth Vaccinations cause autism. truth There are many myths around this issue,

says Michael Chez, MD, director of pediatric neurology research and epilepsy surger y director at Sutter Neuroscience Institute. “Almost every claim of vaccines causing autism has been debunked,” he says. Yet autism rates continued to rise. “The issue is not vaccinations, but more commonly numerous factors—including prenatal risks, maturity when born, genetics and environmental issues,” he says. “Because vaccines occur when children are also developing—at two months, four months and six months— this often coincides with parents becoming aware something may be wrong, [which is] why parents often confuse what they see as cause and effect, instead of separate risk factors and issues that cause the observed changes.”

Sugar makes kids hyper.

Parents, don’t fret. That candy bar will not have a sig nif icant effect on your kids’ behavior. “There have been numerous studies looking at food additives, dyes and sugar content, which have been worrying parents as a cause of hyperactivity in children,” Chez says. “These have all come to produce no evidence that sugar content—or majority of dyes or additives—causes changes in baseline behaviors.”

Placer Rescue Mission A Hope to End Homelessness

by BILL ROMANELLI

It’s an ambitious plan—building a multi-acre campus that will dramatically reduce or even end homelessness in Placer County—but the people behind the proposed Placer Rescue Mission (PRM) believe it’s possible. “We have a lot of services that meet temporary needs, but the real need is for a more permanent solution that moves people out of homelessness,” says Brooke Stephens, a local attorney and president of the PRM board. The idea for the mission—which will be affiliated with the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions—came about after a 2015 report on homelessness in Placer County found the rate of “chronic homelessness” (people who’d been homeless for more than a year) to be three times higher here than the national average. County leaders found the report eye-opening and agreed

30

stylergbr.com // MARCH 2017 //

with its conclusion that bold solutions— and the political will to implement them— were the only chance of really addressing the homelessness problem. And it’s clear to see that the vision and political will are coming together. Presently, Placer County has a 26-acre slice of land available and has provided $44,000 for a feasibility study to assess if the area is suitable for the proposed campus. Assuming good news there, the hope is to build a 12-acre campus with 120 micro-housing units for men, 80 photos by DANTE FONTANA

become a part of

additional units for women and families, a health clinic and an emergency shelter with room for 50 men and 50 women. What makes the project especially audacious, however, is that housing is only the start. “We’re modeling this vision after the Orange County Rescue Mission, which not only provides homes and shelters, but also brings together the various service organizations, on site, to help the people who live there,” Stephens says. In other words, PRM would bring together many community organizations to connect people with medical and mental health services, job training, counseling, legal help, addiction recovery and other resources—all “under one roof.” The idea is to help residents become selfsufficient and eventually have an apartment or home of their own, in a way that’s simply not possible in the current environment. The cost of building the mission still has a few variables, so right now the goal is to reach a threshold of $1 million in fund-raising, and donations are needed. What is known is the annual operating budget of the mission will be about $2 million. “To put that in perspective, it’s estimated that communities spend $40,000 per person, per year, on chronic homeless individuals ($7.2 million annually),” Stephens says. “PRM can save the county $5 million a year, to say nothing of the societal benefits of people getting off the street and becoming working, productive members of [society].” What’s really driving the dream, however, is compassion. “As a faith-based organization, we believe everyone is worthy of dignity and assistance in life’s journey...helping people get free from addiction, mental illness and homelessness, and seeing them transformed by God into healthy people equipped to participate in society is our goal.” facebook.com/placerrescuemission

Seaside Style

3 Tips to Creating a Beachy Abode

by KERRIE L. KELLY, ASID

Star ting a project from scra tch is some thing all designers live for, which is exactly what Kerrie Kelly Design Lab (KKDL) was able to do at this beautiful home in Folsom. The owners of the twostory residence—which features a light, bright interior with distressed hardwood floors and creamy beige walls throughout— were looking to incorporate their love for the Hamptons coastline.

Kerrie L. Kelly is an interior designer who has created several model homes in Northern California. See her latest set at Veranda at Empire Ranch by Elliott Homes in Folsom or online at kerriekelly.com.

32

To sprinkle in their affinity for the seaside, KKDL used bursts of teal, soft blue and gray, paired with distressed gray finishes and metallic accents to balance the oceaninspired color palette. The finished product is a beautiful, resort-like escape, including a living room that’s both inviting and exciting with splashes of bright blue balanced by soft, tufted patterns; and rustic wood finishes, which make the space feel approachable and cozy, especially dotted with the couple’s favorite art prints above

a beautiful wood and mirror console. The bistro-inspired dining space drifts into the kitchen with an open floor plan, making it easy for the couple to cook family meals together without feeling like there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Durable countertops, paired with light gray shaker cabinets, lend a cool and collected vibe to the entire downstairs space. The upstairs area continues to feature the light and airy color sequence, adding in softer layers for bedrooms and office spaces. Decorative details like oversized mirrors, unique bookcases and greenery bring the look to life, making this seaside escape especially swoon-worthy.

HERE ARE A FEW TRICKS TO MAKE THIS SEASIDE STYLE ALL YOUR OWN:

1

Play with Pattern . With so many types of blue incorporated into this home’s design, it’s important to break up the color palette with pattern. Stripes, abstract strokes and polka dots look especially lively when paired with these specific blue tones.

2 3

Make it Metallic. To add a lively touch, use metallic accents. On a picture frame, side table or accessory, glimmers of silver or gold brighten any room. Totally Textured .

Tufted rugs, distressed wood flooring and shaker cabinets give the space a livable and approachable feel. Add a bit of texture in each room to keep the look consistent and cozy.

After years as an A-list side man with John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, and Canned Heat, Walter Trout has enjoyed playing his emotional brand of fired-up, hardcore guitar heavy music, writing and recording his own songs for over 20 years as a solo artist. On “ALIVE in Amsterdam,” released in June 2016, Trout has never sounded so alive. Last summer he blew the roof off venues from Royal Albert Hall to Buddy Guy’s Legends club in Chicago. Walter shows you magic in the studio — but on stage is where he truly comes alive! Don’t miss this event! 30+ best bites

must-order eats + drink s compiled by Style staf fers photos by Dante Fontana

When hunger pangs hit and a cocktail is calling your name, it can be dif f icult deciding where to feed your need and what to order when you ar rive. Luckily, for the third year in a row, Style staf fers put their taste buds together and compiled over 30 of their favorite local dishes and libations. In no par ticular order…

The sugar-rimmed glass holds the sweet and tangy flavors of La Provence Restaurant and Terrace’s signature Paul’s Famous Lemon Drop Martini (made with Grey Goose). To soak up all the boozy goodness, order their Gnocchi Maison. The house-made potato dumplings are served with wild mushrooms, cream and truffle essence—so simple yet simply divine. $11 (small gnocchi), $17 (entrée gnocchi), $14 (cocktail); 110 Diamond Creek Place, Roseville, 916-789-2002, laprovenceroseville. com

The Pork Loin French Dip at The Chef’s Table is a hearty sandwich meant for the hungry. It comes with generous amounts of slow-roasted pork loin served on Dutch crunch with a horseradish and roasted garlic aioli, melted provolone cheese and French onion au jus—making it just au-some. $14; The Chef’s Table, 6843 Lonetree Boulevard, Suite 103, Rocklin, 916-771-5656, thechefstablerocklin. com

For classic Braised Short Ribs, head to Paul Martin’s American Grill for a melt-in-your mouth serving of grass-fed angus beef with creamy mashed potatoes, a slightly pungent horseradish cream and a rich beef jus. $28; 1455 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916783-3600, paulmartinsamericangrill.com The Clam Chowder at Boxing Donkey has bacon in it and is freaking amazing, and growing up in the Northwest I’m a big clam chowder guy. I’ve actually gone and bought pints of theirs to take home to eat throughout the week, because they only serve it on Fridays. $5 (cup), $8 (bowl); 300 Lincoln Street, Roseville, 916-797-3665, theboxingdonkey.com

Head to The Monk’s Cellar for Happy Hour (served every day from 3-6 p.m.) for a pint of their house-brewed Monk’s Tripel and an order of Reuben Fries. Made using duckfat fries and topped with corned beef, melty cheese and sauerkraut, it’s like St. Patrick’s Day on a plate! And trust me: With the beer clocking in at nine-percent ABV, you’ll need all the sustenance you can get. $4 (pint during Happy Hour), $10 (fries during Happy Hour); 240 Vernon Street, Roseville, 916-786-6665, monkscellar.com

I’m obsessed with the Vanilla Macarons from Little Bliss Cakery. They’re handmade and come in about six to eight different flavors. With a gentle crunch on the outside, chewy soft interior and the most amazing meringue sandwiched in the middle that’s not too sweet, they’re the epitome of macaron perfection. $2 each; 8789 Auburn-Folsom Road, Suite D, Granite Bay, 916-791-2253, littleblisscakery.com Loomis Basin Brewing Company's Vindicator IPA is my new Placer County favorite when it comes to beer. It's hoppy but not bitter, with woodsy notes of pine and citrus. And the rich amber color makes it almost as nice to look at as it is to drink. $4.50 (pint); 3277 Swetzer Road, Loomis, 916-259-2739, loomisbasinbrewing.com

The Sashimi Tuna Tacos at Johnny Garlic’s are probably the most perfectly crafted version of an ahi tuna taco you'll find anywhere. The fresh and crispy shell is jam-packed with fresh fish and mango-jicama salsa that adds a hint of sweetness. In the words of Guy Fieri, they’ll take you to flavortown! $8 each; 10505 Fairway Drive, Roseville, 916-7892000, johnnygarlics.com

Don't let the line deter you, Sunflower Drive-In Natural Food is well worth the wait! Whenever I'm looking for a tasty yet healthy meal (aka, all the time), I make a stop here for a Super Nutburger. The nutmeat patty is sure to impress even the most carnivorous, while the fresh veggies like onions, tomatoes, romaine, tomatoes and sprouts add a delightful crunch. I often add avocado for an extra oomph. Eaten alongside their fresh Carrot Juice (juiced while you wait), makes for the perfect meal, bound to satisfy all. Trust me, there's a reason the line is always so long. $7.59 (super nutburger), $2.99 (small juice), $3.29 (large juice); 10344 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Fair Oaks, 916-967-4331

Chopsticks Restaurant has been around forever and has the best War Wonton Soup I’ve ever had. The serving is plentiful, and the broth is always flavorful, piping hot and studded with chewy wontons, plus heaps of shrimp, chicken, beef, pork and veggies. It blows the socks off all the other restaurants! $8.50; 1000 Sunrise Avenue, Suite 12A, Roseville, 916-786-7770, chopsticksmenu.com

Mikuni is my number one spot for fresh and flavorful seafood. My two favorites are the Rainbow Roll and the Oysters on a Half Shell. I’ve even turned a couple of hesitant friends onto oysters after tasting Mikuni's. Served simply— with only ponzu sauce and a dot of sriracha to add tang and a kick— they take an ordinary oyster and make it extraordinary. Their rainbow roll is a classic that doesn't need any fancy sauces to delight, and balances the fish to rice ratio perfectly. $10.95 (sushi), Market Price (oysters); 1565 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-7972112, mikunisushi.com

I’ve never seen a more appetizing pie than the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza at Chicago’s Pizza With-A-Twist. Not only is it beautiful to look at, but it comes loaded with tangy chicken, sharp onions, green bell peppers and fragrant cilantro, hitting the spot every single time. $7.99 (personal), $11.99 (small), $14.99 (medium), $18.99 (large), $20.99 (extralarge), $23.99 (family size); 7441 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 170, Roseville, 916-7806100, chicagospizzatwist.com Sushi Mon by Sky‘s aptly named Big Mama Roll is truly a mouthful of goodness. Filled with crabmeat, avocado, cream cheese, albacore and salmon, then deep-fried to crunchy perfection and drizzled with sauce, it tastes as good as it looks. Their hot Garlic Edamame is to die for, too! $13 (roll), $6.25 (edamame); 7456 Foothills Boulevard, Roseville, 916-7868228, skysushi.tokyo

Ask anyone who enjoys Italian food about the dishes they love most, and you’ll almost always hear, “it’s the sauce!” Vaiano Trattoria, a favorite among Granite Bay locals, makes a ridiculously good Bolognese marinara. Try it in their Spaghetti Meatballs, and thank me later. $15; 7160 Douglas Boulevard, Granite Bay, 916-780-0888, vaianotrattoria.com

I always make sure to save room for the Doughnut Holes at Sienna Restaurant. Served with a trio of dipping sauces—Jack Daniel’s crème anglaise, chocolate and raspberry—they’re little bits of heaven and the sweetest ending to a memorable meal. Oh, and forget a glass of milk with this dessert; the Vanilla Old-Fashioned is the only beverage you’ll need. $9 (dessert), $12 (cocktail), 1480 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-771-4700, siennarestaurants.com Steak Fajitas are always a good call, but especially when dining at Carmelita’s. Tender, flavorful beef is served sizzling hot alongside a plentiful helping of sautéed onions and peppers, rice, beans, guac, sour cream, pico de gallo and fresh tortillas. To really get the fiesta going, order the ridiculously delicious Blackberry Margarita. $17 (fajitas), $12 (cocktail); 204 Riverside Avenue, Roseville, 916-783-0411, carmelitasgroup.com

I urge you to try Land Ocean New American Grill’s Creamy Blue Cheese Dip with their house-made potato chips. It’s been called “incredible” and “delightful” by my companions, and will make your taste buds sing. Give the pomegranate Special K Martini a go, too; made with house-infused orange vodka, it’s a pretty sight and even tastier sip. $10 (dip), $10 (martini); 1151 Galleria Boulevard, Suite 241, Roseville, 916407-5640, landoceanrestaurants.com The Pork Mojo grilled sandwich at Joe Caribé Bistro and Café entices you with tender pulled pork marinated in a spicy, citrusy sauce, accompanied by jack cheese, a cool island coleslaw and creamy rémoulade. Served with mixed greens tossed in passionfruit vinaigrette, this combination is a winner. $11.95; 13470 Lincoln Way, Auburn, 530-823-5333, joe-caribe.com

The Thai Seafood Fat Pot at Fat’s Asia Bistro is like a treasure hunt of flavors—with its layers of seafood and veggies in a rich red curry coconut broth that’s full of spicy goodness—and always my go-to order. An area institution for over 75 years, the quality of Fat’s ingredients, friendliness and knowledge of their staff, and warm and inviting atmosphere cannot be overstated. And if you haven’t been to their Happy Hour, then you haven’t been to Happy Hour! $18.60; 1500 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-787-3287, fatsrestaurants.com

To call the Mulitas from Chando's Tacos a quesadilla with meat is blasphemy. They’re pure alchemy. Nothing else can explain the transformation of three elementary ingredients—meat, jack cheese and corn tortillas—into flavor gold. $3.49 each; 943 Pleasant Grove Boulevard, Roseville, 916-782-8226, chandostacos.com

The all-American Cowboy Burger at Bar 101 Eats and Drinks hits the spot every time. The half-pound angus beef patty with onion rings, housemade barbecue sauce and bacon is served on a toasted brioche bun with French fries, homestyle chips or salad. That’s some fingerlicking goodness. $11.95; 101 Main Street, Roseville, 916-774-0505, bar101roseville.com

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and the Monte Cristo at Peg's Glorified Ham n Eggs is one of the reasons why. The triple-decker French toast stuffed with ham, Swiss cheese, turkey and cheddar is sprinkled with powdered sugar— just to throw you over the edge—and is served with a bowl of fresh fruit. $11.99; 1950 Douglas Boulevard, Roseville, 916-7822400, eatatpegs.com

The Green Boheme makes healthy eating so easy with a menu that’s bursting with vegan and raw food options. My favorite—and everyone else’s—is the Enchilada. The Mad Teriyaki // I’ve learned that it’s impossible to dislike teriyaki. I mean, how can you go wrong with meat covered in a lip-smacking sauce? That sauce is hard to get right though; luckily for locals, The Mad Teriyaki has mastered it through some mysterious alchemy, and is flooring customers with their perfect teriyaki offerings. I usually go for their Chicken and Steak Plate. It’s perfect for us indecisive folk who prefer not to have to choose between meats, or for those of us who like to have our cake and eat it too—only here, it’s mouthwatering bites of juicy chicken and tender steak covered in smooth, glazed-to-perfection teriyaki sauce that’s topped with green onions and toasted sesame seeds, and served alongside soft coconut rice. For the sides, I like to get their macaroni salad—a cooling Hawaiian-inspired palate pleaser with black olives and celery, and the green salad with house-made raspberry vinaigrette and crisp fried noodles. Delicious doesn’t even begin to describe it. The meat is glorious, and the accompaniments complement each other well. Call me crazy, but I love The Mad Teriyaki; better still, I’m mad about it. Too much? OK I’ll stop. But you get my drift…this place is great! The Mad Teriyaki, 5065 Pacific Street, Rocklin. 916-953-7409, themadteriyaki.com.

6 Favorite Sandwiches

compiled by STYLE STAFFERS photos by DANTE FONTANA

On the hunt for a subsational sandwich? These are Style staffers’ favorite orders when the lunch bell rings. In no particular order… “Despite its name, the Angry Irishman at MAIN STREET MELTERS makes me very happy. The combo of corned beef, pastrami, hot pepper spread, cream cheese, Havarti, grilled onions and jalapeños on sliced sourdough—all grilled to ooey-gooey perfection—makes for a spicy, filling meal that’s even better when paired with their beautiful, petfriendly patio.” mainstreetmelters.com

“Served on a freshly baked French roll, with tender slim-sliced sirloin steak and melted Swiss cheese, the Roasted Sirloin Dip at BISTRO 33 melts in your mouth. What’s more, the au jus is house-made and has hidden flavors that add even more flavor to the alreadyaddicting sandwich.” bistro33edh.com

“The Rat Trap at NEWCASTLE CHEESE SHOP curbs my craving for a quality sub every time. Topped with a hodgepodge of multiple meats and cheeses, plus fresh veggies, it may very well be the best sandwich in the state. Grab one before a day on the Placer Wine Trail or a hike in Auburn, and you’ll be set to jet till dinnertime.” 916-663-3704

“It’s hard to beat the fresh meats and cheeses and friendly staff at BETTER FOODS DELI in Roseville. Family owned and operated since 1970, they’re clearly doing something right! My favorite is the Cajun Turkey on Dutch crunch (made fresh by Truckee Sourdough Company) with a side of house-made macaroni salad. Talk about yummy, down-to-earth goodness.” betterfoodsdeli.com

“FIREHOUSE SUBS not only satisfies the community by giving back, but satisfies my appetite as well. You can’t go wrong with their Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket, featuring USDA choice brisket that’s smoked for more than 16 hours and oh-so-tender, alongside melty cheddar, mayo and Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. My mouth waters just thinking about it.” firehousesubs.com

“The Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana at

DOMINICK'S NY PIZZA AND DELI is ridiculous, as in ridiculously good. Fresh, chewy bread is topped with a thick cut of breaded chicken that's smothered in mozzarella and baked until the cheese is nice and brown, before being bathed in house-made marinara sauce. It’s so satiating that oftentimes I can barely finish a half in one sitting.” dominicksfolsom.com

SPICY BUTTERMILK SLAW 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 tbsp. mayonnaise 1 tbsp. sour cream 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper Squeeze of lime juice Salt and pepper, to taste 1 medium-sized carrot, grated 1/2 cup red cabbage, shredded 2 spring onions (scallions), thinly sliced

To make the marinade, combine all the ingredients in a container or Ziploc bag. Add the chicken, and massage the marinade into it until well coated. Set aside in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours, but preferably overnight. Combine the

coating in a Ziploc bag. Heat enough vegetable oil for deep-frying to 350-degrees Fahrenheit or until a cube of bread dropped into the oil turns brown in 15 seconds. Working with one piece of chicken at a time, toss in coating mixture, until completely covered. Dip the chicken back into the marinade then coat again in flour and spices. Carefully transfer the chicken to the hot oil and fry for about 10 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Drain on paper towel. Meanwhile, make the slaw. Combine ingredients through lime juice in a small bowl and whisk until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Combine the remaining ingredients and toss through the dressing. Spread mayonnaise on the cut sides of each roll then add a large spoonful of slaw followed by the chicken. Top with the remaining roll halves and eat immediately. Serves 2. PAIRS WITH...

Mraz is a rapidly growing, award-winning brewery located in El Dorado Hills (be sure to check out their All Sour Day on March 4 and Bourbon BarrelAged Day on March 11). The American Brown Ale was originally only going to be brewed once, but it was such a hit that they've decided to keep it around. Super smooth, easy to drink and sessionable, it packs a punch of chocolate malt with just the right amount of hops, ensuring it doesn't overpower dishes like this month’s fried chicken.—Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Restaurant & Pub

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I run a licensed in-home family child care program in the Maidu neighborhood of East Roseville, and provide before- and after-school, 24-hour and school holiday care for school-aged children in grades one through six. We have an exceptional teacher-child ratio of one to seven with a focus on outdoor activities and developing social skills. After a 10-year career in structural engineering, I decided to do something closer to my gifting and share more time with my nineyear-old daughter.

I listen to the parents and to the kids; ask lots of questions, so I can get to know the children well; and create unexpected outdoor activities that help them increase their joy, curiosity and wonder.

We are a full-service design firm with the best construction crew in the business, and offer remodeling, renovation home flips, commercial design, a color specialist, new home construction, additions, flooring and window treatments, plus furniture and décor accessories. Our professional team has been featured on TV and in publications. I had always been extremely creative, and give credit to my private education where I received the initial training and developed a love of the arts and an eye for color and composition and design. Early on in my career, I was a guidance counselor; after being published in one local design show, Fabulous Finishes took off! I received corporate sponsors, and the rest is history. I’m so blessed to have a company—located in the community I call home—that’s been in business for over 26 years, and still going strong!

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

Raising my daughter as a single parent, obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout, graduating college, and getting my professional engineering license as a civil engineer in California.

My parents—all four of them. They are successful entrepreneurs and taught me to have a strong work ethic, creativity, morals, leadership, compassion and faith; what’s more, they’ve given me the guidance and foundation to be the successful woman I am today.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

Where do you go when the going gets tough? My small group from church and my parents. We share life together and support each other during tough times.

What’s your hidden talent? Sound engineering for live sound reinforcement. I love being behind the scenes helping to create awesome sound for the audience.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Paul Martin’s American Grill or Umi Sushi.

If you could be in any other profession, what would it be? Clinical child psychologist.

And finally, customer service is…?

What’s your biggest job perk? The flexibility to be with my husband and travel, in addition to working with fabulous people and making their dreams come true.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? Visconti’s Ristorante. It’s a family-owned business that treats you like family, and their food is the best!

And finally, customer service is…? The most important attribute in my firm. We all take great pride in making sure our clients have the most amazing and over-the-top experience working with us. “Creating beautiful environments for people to work and live in” has been the key to a successful business for over 26 years.

The intersection of skill and humility.

Is the Prize Right? The Truth About Trophies by TOM MAILEY // illustrated by DAVID NORBY

Recently it’s become fashionable to criticize “participation trophies.” According to some, they’re to blame for nothing less than weakening the resolve of entire generations, putting the very foundations of our country at risk. To which I say, really? Personally, I see nothing wrong with handing out trophies, ribbons or, heck, little gilded lollipops at the end of a season. Now, I’m not talking about older kids—high school or even youth sports’ upper levels. But letting a six-, seven- or eight-year-old know their participation meant something…? I have zero problem with that. I freely admit though that five seasons coaching Little League does not make me an expert, so I asked a few sporting-type folks I know and Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning respect. Show on New I started with Matt Goodell. For years, Country 105.1, email him at tnvmailey@ he was president of Roseville West Little gmail.com, or follow him on Twitter League. Good coach, too. In his mind, not @kncitom. only do participation trophies not give a kid any sense of entitlement long-term—they WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? don’t even do it short-term. Don’t miss Style’s “20 Under 20: Local “The participation trophy has ZERO Youth Raising the impact on how a season goes [or] the athletic Bar.” ability and growth of the individual …ZERO,” he said. “Kids know who was the best, the

66

least, the natural…they don’t need a coach or hardware to tell them that.” What they do instead, he suggests, is acknowledge a child’s commitment to something bigger than themselves for one of the first times in their lives. Football coach Casey Taylor, recently of powerhouse Del Oro but now at Capital Christian, doesn’t think participation trophies lend a sense of entitlement either. Instead, he’s more concerned with pay-to-play competitive (or “comp”) sports teams giving many kids—and parents— unrealistic ideas of a young athlete’s ability. A youngster, he says, “might be on a comp team, but that doesn’t mean they’re good.” At the youth level, he’d like to see more emphasis put on learning—and simply learning to enjoy—a game, and he thinks parents and youth coaches “get too caught up in wins and losses. It’s gotta be more about the game, the journey.” Sports, he says, are not only a chance to “learn life lessons like self-discipline and working with others,” but they’re also something to simply enjoy well into adult life at a recreational level. A slightly different take on participation trophies comes from Jason Harper, founder of the high school sports motivational program Character Combine. He’s mostly not a fan. “At entry-level, I can understand,” he says, comparing them to medals earned for completing a marathon. But even then, he thinks it’s important that the “why” be explained, otherwise, it “creates an idea that as long as you show up, you’ll be rewarded, and that’s not how life really is. You have to show up and compete or you’re not going to play…or be employed.” And I don’t disagree…for older kids. But at the youngest levels, kids participate for different reasons: some because they want to, some because they think they might want to, and quite a few because their parents want them to. Regardless, that’s as it should be—you won’t know unless you try, right? And to me, try is a word that doesn’t get enough credit. Can you remember the last time you tried something new? Something really outside your comfort zone? Me either. Now, think about a first, second or third grader. For many of them, that’s exactly what they’re doing. That sort of effort should be rewarded, because at that age how they did doesn’t matter. That they did, does. There’s your “why.” But there’s one other reason that didn’t occur to me until I contacted Matt Goodell. “It’s funny you asked about that,” he said in an initial email exchange. “My 15-year-old just yesterday pulled out his trophies—participation to individual accolades—from a stored container and placed as many on his window sill that he could fit. I asked him why he did it, and he said ‘I don’t know.’ Typical teenager response, right?” But, he added, “as we sat there staring at them, I realized the appreciation he has for every one of them.” Each, Goodell realized, “tells a story, a memory, a moment in time…” And that’s a pretty decent reason, too. I’M VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. Dr. Almonte and staff were very personable and comforting as I was nervous on my first visit and didn’t know anything about plastic surgery except I knew I wanted to improve the way I looked. Dr. Almonte was very informative and I learned so much. He put me at ease and thoroughly explained different procedures and options. From there our journey to my new and young appearance began....lower eyelid, upper eyelid, mini facelift and mini tummy tuck. I love the way I look now. I look RESTED, REFRESH and YOUNGER. LOVE IT! Thank you Dr. Almonte for your wonderful work!
