Welcome to the premiere edition of SchoolGuide!
T
his is the culmination of years of brainstorming, interviewing, develop-
ment, research and finally production. SchoolGuide is designed to be
a valuable tool to assist parents and others in traversing waters that in
recent years have become so much deeper with specialty and diversity. The reality of living in a world where there are now so many educational
choices can at times feel daunting. These choices create questions, and the key to getting the right answers for you and your child is in asking the right ques-
tions of the school, yourself and your child. Planning for your child’s education may be the single greatest gift you can give them.
We hold no grandiose thoughts that this publication is the end all be all when
it comes to the decisions you are making. However, we hope it will guide you in your planning and in your decision making.
This printed guide is just part of the SchoolGuide platform. The other very
important part of is our website, schoolguide.com. The site will feature a
larger and up to date directory, new content as well as more information in
general. It is also a place where you can contact us – and we want to hear from you: what you like as well how you feel we can make this publication better in the future.
The fact that you are reading this guide (or others like it) is evidence of the
commitment and understanding you have to your children and their future. Sincerely,
Terence Carroll & Wendy Sipple Publishers SchoolGuide 2017

MAKING THE GRADE HOW QUALITY EDUCATION IMPACTS OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURES
by: Kristen Castillo
C
alifornia has the most diverse student population in the country and the most number of students too, with over 6.2 million kids attending over 10,000 schools statewide. Students deserve the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their personal and professional lives. So how can parents make sure their children’s education is of the highest quality? 12 Style’s School Guide-2017 schoolguideonline.com
Style’s School Guide-2017 schoolguideonline.com 13
Kinder Counts
Starting kids early in their education continues to be a formula for success. Early Childhood education programs help kids develop cognitive skills, as well as emotional and social skills—all of which are necessary building blocks to succeed in academic, personal and professional lives. For example, the state’s First 5 California program works in partnership with local counties to help educate kids ages zero through five. The goal? To engage children—both inside and outside the home—and develop skills that will help them be successful. According to First 5 California, kids who have access to high-quality early learning and care, “have demonstrated reduced healthcare costs, are better learners, citizens and ultimately better earners.”
Art Appreciation
Arts have been shown to stimulate kids, resulting in better grades and higher rates of college enrollment. The National Endowment for the Arts says at-risk student with arts in or out of school perform better at academics, have better job opportunities and more civic engagement. Across California, schools K-8 are embracing the arts. Statewide curriculum mandates programs known as VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) that focuses on dance, music, theatre and visual arts, showing kids and educators that the arts are important.
Grading the Schools
Parents need to check their school’s report card to make sure the educators are making the grade. The California Department of Education recently 14 Style’s School Guide-2017 schoolguideonline.com
launched its California School Dashboard, which they say is like a report card to help parents, educators and the public evaluate schools and school districts. The new “Dashboard” will grade schools and districts in six state measures: academic indicator (which includes results on standardized tests); career/college readiness; English learner progress; graduation rate; suspension rate and chronic absenteeism. They will also be evaluated in four local indicators: basic services and school conditions; implementation of state academic standards; parent engagement; and school climate. Two additional local indicators for county offices of education include coordination of services for expelled youth and coordination of services for foster youth.
“The California Department of Education recently launched its California School Dashboard, which they say is like a report card to help parents, educators and the public evaluate schools and school districts.”
Graduation Stats
According to the California Department of Education (CDE), the graduation rate for 2015 (the most recent numbers reported), 82.3 percent of high school students graduate. The rates were up for English learners, Hispanic or Latino students and African American students. The dropout rate also declined 0.8 percent from 11.5 percent in 2014 to 10.7 percent in 2015. Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, calls the increased graduation rates encouraging, saying student are “benefiting from the additional revenues” going to schools as well as the resurgence of “relevant and engaging classes in science, civics, arts, and Career Technical Education.” Classroom success happens when parents, students and educators work together. Then students can move forward in their education, building on their skills one class at a time.

preschools
P
reschool encompasses some of the most exciting and enriching years of a child’s life. During these developmental years, children absorb information at extremely rapid speeds, expressing interest and curiosities in every new discovery. Most preschools include 3-5 year olds,
although each is unique with varying teaching styles and curriculum. Early childhood programs are a great way for young kids to develop communication skills, as well as a knowledge and understanding of the world. Through daily interaction in a classroom setting with other children, preschoolers experience personal, social, and emotional development as well. Due to an increase in maternal employment rates, national anti-poverty initiatives, and research showing the link between early childhood experiences and the brain development of young children, 4 year olds enrolled in formal education has skyrocketed from 10% in 1960 to almost 70% today. The greater Sacramento region offers countless programs designed to meet the different needs of each child. Some of the most prevalent include Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia, as well as religious, community, and cooperative approaches to early education. Preschool is a perfect time to introduce complicated subjects to children in creative and enriching ways through exploration of letters, sounds, colors, shapes, numbers, drawings, and much more.

private schools
B
efore deciding on the right school for their child,
parents must first make the choice between private and public education. With tuition costs, academic courses, location, and other factors to weigh in,
finding the right fit may take some time. There are
several benefits of the private school education system, with
specialized instruction from well-trained teachers, to stronger sports programs and close religious affiliations among the
most praised. According to the National Center for Educa-
tion, 80% of private schools in the United States are affiliated with a particular religion, while the remaining 20% consist
of nonsectarian schools such as Montessori, Waldorf, and Country Day.
With more than 140 private schools in the greater Sac-
ramento region, there are a variety of programs to accom-
modate a wide range of expectations and interests. A private education is great for those looking for teaching styles and
practices not commonly found in public education. The Waldorf system, for example, believes in introducing traditional
academic subjects later on in life, around the age of 7, while focusing heavily on imaginative and creative activities at a
younger age. According to the Private School Review, there
are approximately 19,000 students in the Sacramento region enrolled in private education with an average teacher student ratio of 13:1.

implement their own educational plan and are responsible for creating their own policies, procedures and programs. They provide educational services to over 4700 students,
employing more than 500 special education teachers, specialists and instructional assistants. They are incorporated
into what is known as a Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), which covers the districts within Sacramento
County. Placer and El Dorado Counties are in separate
regions but still follow the SELPA plan, ensuring all special needs students are integrated into public schools.

10 ways to make your child a better student by: Kourtney Jason
A
ny number of factors can throw even the brightest young minds off track. But with a few simple homework assignments for the parents, any child can become a better student.
6. Get involved. Be a classroom helper, organize a fundraiser or chaperon field trips whenever you can. A few hours of participation can provide memories for both of you.
1. Meet the teachers and the school administration. It’s important for you to know the Who’s Who as well as what they do. Whenever an issue should arise, you’ll know whom to turn to for advice.
7. Ask questions. Go beyond “yes” or “no” questions to learn more about your child’s day.
2. Attend school events. Back-to-school nights and parent-teacher conferences—these early school year events give you an opportunity to show your child that you are involved and interested in his/her success. 3. Be ready for questions. Let your child know you are available, should he/she have any questions about assignment instructions. Be there when they get stuck or need you to review the completed work. 4. Set homework expectations. According to The National PTA, homework should take 10-20 minutes per night in first grade and an additional 10 minutes per grade level thereafter. If it takes longer than the recommendations, talk to your child’s teacher. 5. Prepare your child for school. Teach by example that mornings are less stressful when you prepare for them the night before. 38 Style’s School Guide-2017 schoolguideonline.com
8. Encourage reading. Reading helps kids across all school subjects. You might hesitate to buy your kid the latest video game, but you most certainly shouldn’t hesitate to buy your kid a new book. 9. Monitor TV time. According to Michigan Medicine’s 2010 report on children and television, children ages two to five spent 32 hours a week in front of a TV. That is 32 hours of missed opportunities to learn and grow. 10. Be supportive. Encourage your child through every up and down, from helping out in a subject and inspiring him/her to do his/ her best to sending thoughtful notes in their lunchbox and always being on time for pick-up.

learning a foreign language might. Through theatre and plays, children are able to express brand new emotions, often times developing empathy and compassion by identifying with the characters they are portraying.

hen the weekend comes around, and kids are free from their school week
responsibilities, what better way to occupy their time than with exciting trips to
Museums, Zoos, and more! Museums are
a great place to introduce children to different aspects
of history. There are several in Sacramento including an automobile and railroad Museum where children can
take a peek into the past and learn how their ancestors traveled.
Sacramento is also known for its wildlife sanctuary
in Folsom and its Zoo in Land Park. These are excellent places for kids to get in tune with nature and learn

conservation. Zoos and Museums often have educational classes and programs incorporated into their facilities. With the capital of California located in downtown
Sacramento, there are countless tours and programs designed to introduce politics and government to
children in exciting ways. Children have a chance to
engage with state political leaders and gain a better
understanding of how the political system works. Along
with the capital, there are several historic sites preserved by the state including Sutter’s Fort located in midtown
Sacramento. This is a fun and historic place to teach kids about the first pilgrims and pioneers that settled in this area hundreds of years ago!

7 WAYS TO PREP KIDS FOR COLLEGE
PLAN OF ACTION 62 Style’s School Guide-2017 schoolguideonline.com
by: Linda Holderness
W
hen should your child begin planning for college? Earlier than you may think, experts say. Delaying past middle school may cause missed opportunities. Most parents want their children to go to college, and most high school students do go. In 2014, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, 68 percent of high school graduates—20 million of them—began college the next fall. Getting there, however, can be a confusing and even grueling process. To some youngsters, choosing a college mimics sorority rush—hoping the school they want picks them and feeling crushed if it doesn’t. As parents, you can help smooth the path to your child’s higher education. Here are seven tips gleaned from education experts. 1. Read, read, read. Reading to your children and encouraging them to read is simply the best preparation for school and testing
success, urges the online nonprofit GreatSchools. 2. Value your child’s education. Develop a relationship with the school, her teachers and, most important, the academic counselors, so you can be involved in how her education takes shape. Then follow through by helping her learn good study skills and habits, including a time and quiet place for homework. If your child has learning impediments, such as vision or hearing issues, make sure they’re addressed. 3. Be selective about your child’s high school. Colleges do consider high school rankings when evaluating applications. If your assigned school lacks subjects your child needs, and you can’t transfer her, start early to supplement her learning with extracurricular programs that fill the gaps. Even better, initiate or join efforts for positive changes. 4. Choose the right courses. Getting into the college of choice may require completing a specific high school curriculum—but your child can’t do that if she doesn’t have the prerequisites. That’s where middle school is so important. Starting in sixth grade, discuss with counselors which classes will lead to the program your child needs, especially advanced placement classes. Some colleges give credit for the more rigorous AP courses, saving both costs and time. 5. Help your child find her own special interests. Expose her to
music, art, science, drama and community service—anything that might interest her, to see if she catches a passion. This discovery process accomplishes two purposes: rounding out her college application to supplement her academics, and perhaps revealing a career path that excites her. Students who are focused on a goal generally have a more successful college experience. 6. Start saving—early. College is expensive, but advance planning can put it within reach. First, save wisely. One option is a federal 529 plan (sec.gov), which lets you use the earnings tax-free to pay for college. Your financial adviser or an Internet search will turn up others. If money’s an issue, don’t dismiss community college or your public university. Future achievement doesn’t depend on an Ivy League diploma. Many successful people graduated from public schools. For a good perspective on school choice, read Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be by Frank Bruni. 7. On the other hand, don’t write off private colleges. Highpowered schools routinely offer generous financial aid packages that rival the lower cost of public education. Start early to research these opportunities. College is a good bet. On Forbes. com, columnist Troy Onink cites a 2014 report that calculates college grads earn an average of $830,000 more than high school graduates over their lifetimes. And the experience of learning? That’s priceless.
