elcome to our May 2020 Special Edition issue. You will notice we look a little different this month, but then everything around us looks different as we all work to get past these challenging times. This month, we focus on dining at home, engaging brain and body activities, local resources as well as our usual, locally focused editorial that you have come to know and expect for nearly 17 years from Style. Thankfully our region has been somewhat spared from the effects of the COVID-19 virus as there have been relatively few cases locally. But, the devastation this pandemic has brought to our economy affects us all. However, it’s important to understand that this is something we can all work together to improve, and we can start TODAY! Consider this:
FACT: Every purchase you make from a local business has a direct positive impact on the business health of our community. FACT: Every dollar we spend outside of our community, goes to support everyone but ourselves.

P.S. As we were going to press, this note was sent to us from a local business owner. We hope you will take a minute to read it and know that it can apply to almost any small business around us.
Shop Local... Where it Matters. #ShopLocal #SupportLocalBusiness #CommunitySupportingCommunity
As a local retailer/service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have developed strong opinions about the future of our local business and others like us. We have operated in Folsom for more than 13 years. For nearly each of those years, we have been fortunate enough to receive Style Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards for both Pet Retailer and Groomer. This is not to say we are perfect—we are not. But we have been able to achieve these awards despite being in a community with several big box pet food stores, the advent of online competition and various other local similar store concepts. We are proud of our results and our satisfied local customer base. COVID-19 may erase the gains of ours and other local store operators like us. Simply put, social-distancing, stay in-place and other orders have made shopping online easier for many to consider, despite the great service many retailers provide. We are very fortunate to be considered an “essential” business. Our staff is still employed, we are making ends meet. At the outset of this situation, the stock of Chewy.com was trading at approximately $28 per share. It is currently over $41 per share. So, while the rest of the independent pet food industry is suffering, the behemoth, publicly-traded entities are thriving. Over the years, these large companies have piggy-backed, and continue to piggy-back, on the efforts of small businesses like ours. We spend our days assisting people in finding the best food for someone’s particular pet based on their pet’s needs, health issues and budgetary capabilities. Once identified, we see and hear more people utilizing our expertise and then transitioning to Chewy.com or Amazon. com to purchase the products that we have identified. Why? We believe in most cases it is to save that trip to the store. It’s not price, as our pricing is as low as, and often lower than, those found online. Stackline just completed an e-commerce study that showed a 159 percent increase in online pet food sales March 2019 to March 2020. Scary. Like most businesses in our position, we strategize and modify our operations, placing an even greater emphasis on customer service. For us, this means modifying a soon-to-be released updated website which will allow for online ordering with free curbside pickup or local home delivery. Additionally, we have instituted a third-party customer loyalty program (Astro) that allows customers to receive a free bag of dog food after purchasing 10-12 bags over time—a program not available online. We count on our local community's support for these efforts to succeed. We often hear the term bandied about in ads (especially from American Express) imploring people to “shop local.” We’ve always thought this was generally a great idea and sentiment. After this current pandemic, this will no longer just be a tagline; it must become a reality or many, many businesses of varied types will simply perish. Do we want to live in a world in which big box stores are the only available options—with their ability to limit choice, stunt the development of aspiring new product concepts through shelf control and further delocalize the shopping experienc? Can you imagine our community with our only restaurant choices being McDonald’s, Burger King or Taco Bell? Or, without family-owned, local favorites like Visconti’s Ristorante, Thai Paradise, Hisui Sushi, Fat’s Asia Bistro or Taco Loco? In the coming weeks and months ahead, we will all be faced with choices on how we will change our behaviors—we implore you to adopt one that regularly includes your local, family-owned businesses in mind. “SHOP LOCAL, IT MATTERS!” —Bob Campbell & John Steiner Owners // sbarkles.com
The small businesses that employ our friends, family and neighbors are the bedrock of our communities, and they are being terribly damaged. Please, the next time you think about making a purchase online, stop and ask yourself, “Can I buy this locally?“ Chances are you can—and you will likely have it faster, and with it will come a couple of bonuses: a real person saying “THANK YOU,“ and knowing that you just did something to help your community....unless you are concerned that Jeff Bezos, Amazon ’s CEO, is going to need your help paying the mortgage on his new $165 million (yeah, really, $165 million) home in Beverly Hills?!! All of us at Style want to call out and thank all of the heros around us—our police and fire departments, first responders, essential workers, restaurant and grocery store staff, and, of course, the doctors, nurses and the teams at our medical offices and hospitals. These people are doing important work that matters greatly to us all. Please be sure to thank them every chance you get. — Terry & Wendy terry@stylemg.com wendy@stylemg.com

cross California tonight, nearly 60,000 children are not sleeping in their family homes. Instead, foster parents—now called resource families—are providing these youngsters with shelter and care. Or, as Erin Brown, executive director at FosterHope Sacramento, calls them: angels. Child Protective Services places children with these “angels” if it’s determined the child’s home is unsafe. In the past, abuse was the main cause for removal. Now, says Laural Gamp, social worker/administrator at Sierra Child & Family Services, the greater cause is neglect from parents’ alcohol or drug use. In most cases, the stay away is temporary, with the goal to heal the families and return the children home. Finding enough foster families, especially for teens, is difficult. Babies are easy to place, and most find homes with relatives or close friends, but about two-thirds of foster children—primarily teenagers, multiple siblings, and LGBTQ

are paid modest stipends, and the children are covered for medical and dental expenses. Foster parents must be at least 18, with no upper age limit. They can be single or married, gay, working full-time, and any religion or ethnicity. Ideally, the agencies will find homes of a familiar culture that allow the kids to continue in their same school. If possible, siblings are kept together, which means the foster parents must have enough bedrooms for them. The need for homes for LGBTQ youngsters is especially critical: about a quarter of them do not live with their families of origin. “We’ve had wonderful results with our foster families,” says Kuhn. “This is definitely something people do because of their love for children and their capacity to have a lot of empathy.” If you’re interested in becoming a foster parent, “don’t be intimidated,” urges Brown. Because of these angels, “thousands of beautiful, amazing stories occur every day.” MAY 2020 |

hen I was a child, going to the library was a magical journey. My brother and I had permission to pick out whatever childrens’ literary delight we wanted. On top of that, my little mind couldn’t comprehend how it was all absolutely free! To me, it was as good as ice cream (well, almost). That evening, after gathering a stack of reading wonders, my mom would read to us. Our favorites were the whimsical, always-a-hidden-safetylesson Berenstain Bears. This was always my mom’s ticket into an adventure to keep us entertained, but also ensured we would always associate the library with happy memories of joy. Our local libraries have always been a valuable resource to our community—now, when we’re practicing social distancing and going to the library in person may not be an option, these community gems have upped their virtual game even more to help keep kids of all ages entertained and engaged...creating new memories of joy. In 2020, the Harris Center celebrates a decade of arts in Folsom. And for anyone who has attended a performance at the massive arts center, it should come as no surprise that the team at Harris Center is feeling quite excited about the next ten years, too. “The center is an amazing facility and the popular programs we’ve built so far have already had a tremendous impact on the quality of life in this community,” says Dave Pier, Executive Director for the Harris Center for the Arts (harriscenter.net). “At the same time, there is much more we can do to realize the center’s full potential.” Opened in 2011 and built at the cost of $50 million, the Harris Center was initially called the “Three Stages at Folsom Lake College.” The original purpose of the facility was to serve as an instruction facility for arts and visual artists at Folsom Lake College, but when planning began,
supporters realized the scope could be expanded into a public arts center for the greater Folsom community. Construction began in 2008, and in 2012, the facility was renamed to the Harris Center for the Arts to honor Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Emeritus Brice Harris, who was pivotal in the development of both Folsom Lake College and the arts center. The center covers approximately 80,000 square feet, which includes three theatres (the 851-seat Proscenium Theater, the 207-seat City Studio Theater, and the intimate 95-seat Scott-Skillman Recital Hall,) as well as an art gallery, ticket offices, ample MAY 2020 |

lobby space, a cafe, and more. The Harris Center’s facilities are sponsored by local, national and international partners, like AT&T, Bank of America, the City of Folsom, Comcast, Green Oak Consulting Group, Guild Mortgage, IBS-US, Kikkoman Foods Foundation, Inc., LPAS, Patrick & Kathleen Kirklin, Sevy & Neva Cimaroli, The Harry C. Deborah Elliott Family Foundation, Mercy Hospital of Folsom, Wells Fargo and many others. With industry-defining elements like a high-definition laser projector, LED stage lighting, and a world-class, six-figure sound system, the center is equipped to handle top-tier performances from around the world. So far, they’ve hosted performers from 50 countries. By staff estimates, the Harris Center serves annually more than 150,000 guests from the region, nearly double the Folsom population (though they topped 180,000 for the 2018-2019 season ). But more impressive still is the positive economic contribution

to the area. Best estimates show that theater operations create an annual influx of $10 million into the local economy and generate approximately $1 million in additional state and local taxes. The center has also created hundreds of jobs for fulltime employees and contractors from the region and within the arts community. “Of the over 400 events that take place at the Center each year, about 50 showcase the talents of Folsom Lake College students in theatre, dance and music as part of the college’s instructional programs,” says Pier. However, students are also involved in the day-to-day operations of the center, like ticketing, concessions, stage operations, marketing and administrative services, allowing students across a variety of disciplines and majors to get real-world experience. But it’s not just Folsom Lake College students that can get involved. The center regularly hosts performances by the Sacramento Preparatory Music

ways. Nearly 92 percent of the center’s operating revenue comes from ticket sales and rentals, so attending an additional performance every year is an ideal way to show support. On a grander scale, the center always welcomes personal donations, sponsorships, and support for their community programs. As much as the center appreciates donations, supporting the center comes with a return benefit, too. “The center and its programs build community, increase civic pride, improve cross-cultural harmony, and have a strong positive economic impact in the region,” says Pier. “The arts encourage creative thinking and increase empathy and tolerance. Arts provide meaning to our lives and are a positive experience in the world.”

Center’s offerings and reach, both in-person and virtually. According to Pier, the center hopes to strengthen their arts education programming, serving more students through both performances and summer camps. He’d also like to see artists more integrated into masterclasses and artist residencies for the school, and would like to add pre-performance discussions to some events so the audience can have a more well-rounded understanding of the artist’s work. Pier says they’d also like to offer virtual performances and bring more community groups into the center to reach new audiences that may not currently be exposed to the arts. Identification: Oval-shaped, green/ red leaf with lobed/rounded border and a shiny coating; always grouped in threes (leaves of three, leave them be). Prevention: Know how to identify/ avoid the plant. Wear pants and long sleeves, remove/wash clothes after suspected contact. Dogs will not get the rash; however, their fur will trap the oil, potentially contaminating you, so best to avoid taking your dog on trails with heavy poison oak. Symptoms: Appear 24-48 hours after contact with oil. Creates itchy rash with raised blisters. Treatment: Clean area with Tecnu Outdoor Skin Cleanser Original, then treat with calamine lotion, or hydrocortisone cream. A cool compress and/or a bath with baking soda can help ease the itch.

Staying Healthy
| health & wellness | decrease stress, take time everyday to do activities you enjoy, prioritize taking good care of your mental and emotional health, stay up-to-date on all your immunizations (including the flu shot), wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and maintain a healthy weight. Dr. Chinichian recommends drinking three to five cups of green tea daily, which is excellent for boosting your immune system due to its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, and says, “it is best to choose organic green tea when possible,” she says. In addition to the choices we make when it comes to our sleep, dietary and lifestyle habits, certain vitamin and mineral supplements can also be helpful, especially if you are deficient in some vitamins and minerals, Dr. Chinichian says.
THE TRUTH ABOUT SUPPLEMENTS
Maintaining a Strong Immune System

T
he immune system is the main line of defense against illness and infections, says Dr. Shideh Chinichian, Family Medicine physician with Dignity Health Mercy Medical Group (dignityhealth.org). “When your immune system functions properly, you don’t notice it working hard to protect you. So on a day that you are feeling well, you can thank your immune system,” she says. By making healthy lifestyle choices, you can strengthen it and keep it in great condition, which will protect you against viruses and bacteria. “If you have a weak immune system you will constantly get sick and feel unwell. A robust and well-functioning immune system is important during the cold and flu seasons, and especially currently with the COVID-19 outbreak,” Dr. Chinichian says. “Without a healthy immune system, you pick up infections more easily and the effects are often more debilitating. Thus, it is best to keep your immune system

strong, so it can keep you strong.” One of the best ways to try to strengthen your immune system is to follow a healthy lifestyle, says Dr. Anuradha Shanmugham of Marshall Family Medicine and Chief Wellness Officer for Marshall Medical Center (marshallmedical.org). “Some of the ways you can do this are exercise regularly, drink lots of water (at least six to eight glasses per day), make sure you get an adequate amount of sleep every night, and follow a well-balanced diet, which includes at least five portions of fruits and vegetables every day. Make sure to include these foods in your diet, such as cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, berries like raspberries and blackberries, green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach, and other fruits like oranges and kiwi.” Dr. Shanmugham says. Your immune system will also get stronger if you stop smoking, limit alcohol consumption, try to find healthy ways to
Vitamins and minerals can help support a diet that isn’t as well balanced as it should be. “Unfortunately, as a society, we are not eating as well as we should,” says Dianna Singh, an integrative health coach and owner of Cameron Park Vitamins (cameronparkvitamins.com). The best way to get vitamins and minerals is to include natural sources of these in your diet, Dr. Shanmugham says. “If you feel you are not getting enough micronutrients in your diet, then it’s time to take a multivitamin daily and you can discuss this with your doctor,” she says. To help support a healthy, well-balanced and anti-inflammatory diet, you can consider some supplements to strengthen your immune system. “These include vitamins A, C, D, and E. In addition, zinc, an essential mineral, has shown to boost immunity with recent promise in reducing the severity of the coronavirus infection,” Dr. Chinichian says. “Probiotics are another helpful supplement to consider, which increase the number of beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotics can help restore your normal gut flora and support your immune function, especially if one has taken antibiotics. Other supplements to consider are elderberry, garlic, ginger and peppermint, which you can obtain in various forms.” It’s important to note the Food and Drug Administration does not verify whether supplements contain what they claim or if they may be contaminated with heavy metals or pesticides. | health & wellness | sure to shop from reputable sources and look for supplements that, “offer a quality program that performs enhanced testing exceeding FDA requirements for their gold and silver partners,” she says. “You can search for brands with gold and silver designation, which indicates they have gone through extensive testing to ensure high quality. It is best to work with your healthcare provider in making recommendations that are specific to your needs.” Singh also suggests going to the mom and pop stores in your neighborhood that are long-established. “They are very well educated with the companies and get constant training,” she says. “If taking supplements is all new to you, we suggest beginning with just one, and to take it according to directions on bottle. And please start with your doctor’s advice and direction.” She also suggests taking a good pre/pro-biotic. “It’s a great place to start to nourish the good bacteria in your gut,” she says. Laura Ryan, product consultant and supplements specialist at Sunrise Natural Foods (sunrisenaturalfoods.net), says there as many supplements that are used particularly during cold and flu season. “Certain supplements are useful year-round, such as Vitamins C, D and A, medicinal mushrooms, zinc, and probiotics to name a few. Many of these can be obtained from a healthy diet and only need to be boosted when faced with a health challenge,” she says. “It is good to remember that your immune system is the first line of defense against disease and it takes more that a supplement to keep it working.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF WASHING YOUR HANDS Now more than ever, it’s important to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines on how to wash your hands, which will help to prevent people from getting sick and prevent spread of illness and germs. “There are the five important steps the CDC recommends,” Dr. Shanmugham says. “First, wet your hands with clean, running water and then apply soap. Lather your hands thoroughly with the soap on the back of your hands and also in the spaces between your fingers and under your nails. Scrub all parts of your hand for at least 20 seconds. To time yourself, you can hum the entire ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice. Rinse your hands thoroughly under clean running water. Then, dry your hands with a clean towel or you can air-dry them. Do not leave them wet.” There are valid reasons why we should all follow these steps when we wash our hands.

NOT ALL SUPPLEMENTS ARE CREATED EQUAL, says Anna Rashidi, Pharm.D., compounding pharmacist at Innovative Compounding Pharmacy (icpfolsom. com). “When choosing a supplement, consumers should look for high-quality brands that have created their products based on efficacy and safety studies, and test their products like a drug manufacturer would test the prescription product,” she says. "To strengthen your immune system, try zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, quercetin, probiotics, N-acetyl cysteine, copper, phytomulti (multivitamin) and omega-3. L-theanine, which is an essential amino acid, can help to reduce stress and increase relaxation without causing drowsiness. We also recommend taking a melatonin supplement to assist with sleep. It happens to be a great anti-inflammatory agent as well.”
“When you lather and scrub your entire hands, it causes friction and the process helps lift dirt and microbes from your skin,” Dr. Shanmugham says. “It is important to include high contamination areas for microbes, like the space under the nails, when scrubbing hands. According to the CDC, there is evidence to suggest that washing your hands for at least 20 seconds helps remove more germs from hands compared to washing it for a time period shorter than this. Following this very simple, yet highly effective, way of good hand washing hygiene can go a long way in preventing the spread of many infections.” To stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community, it’s recommended to wash your hands often throughout the day. “Repeat this process after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, going to the bathroom, and before eating or preparing food,” Dr. Chinichian says. “Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs, but if soap and water is not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Keep in mind, hand sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs and may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. They may also not remove harmful chemicals such as pesticides and heavy metals.”

ALL ABOUT AWNINGS It used to be that awnings were confined to the rooflines of dwellings, but today there are many options to choose from, including large format umbrellas and tensioned shade sails. The latter takes on a simple architectural form when attached

PORCH LIFE If your style is to celebrate front-of-house living, consider the front porch. Not only do they open up to the world but also are ideal for reading the morning's news or enjoying a sunset spritzer. Update your existing porch by making simple cosmetic modifications or build one out as an addition. You can easily dress up an underused porch with comfortable seating and side tables, along with planted hanging baskets; or go big, adding thoughtful trim, a tin roof, and fresh coat of paint.
PRETTY PERGOLAS Though traditionally planted with vines to cover walkways in the garden, many pergolas today are used as architectural elements. Materials can run the gamut from rustic branches to wood to modern metal structures. If you decide to grow vines on your pergola, choose a strong one that can support that much weight. A professionally installed pergola can handle a much heavier load than one installed from a kit.
TREES PLEASE The easiest and most cost-effective way to add shade to your outdoor space is to

plant shade trees. Although they take time to grow, trees add beauty and charm to the neighborhood, and a well-cared-for one can last for generations to come. While fall is typically the best time to plant new trees, you can begin planning for the perfect spot today.
KICHLER IMARI LED 65” CEILING FAN

FANTASTIC FANS If it's still sweltering in your summer shade, a cool breeze can circulate the air to make the heat a few degrees cooler while keeping the mosquitoes at bay. Available in a variety of chic finishes and styles, ceiling fans make an outdoor living area look and feel more inviting in an affordable way.
MISTING MODELS Misting systems spray a fine mist over your outdoor space and provide a cool breeze that can make outdoor living very comfortable on even the hottest days. Install one along your patio or porch roofline to add just the right amount of cool to your most-used outdoor areas.
WATER FEATURES If a swimming pool is too large of an addition to your outdoor space, consider a water feature. The soothing sounds of a small flowing fountain will make a hot summer day feel more bearable. Welldesigned and maintained fountains and ponds provide a relaxed environment and attract birds and wildlife, making the outdoor space seem cooler. Professionally

COVID-19 AND YOUR PET Tenaya
Gambit
What You Should Know by BRAD CAHOON, DMV, CVA
C
oronaviruses are enveloped viruses that generally cause respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in humans as well as companion animals (pets). Companion animal coronaviruses are common pathogens and appear to be speciesspecific, which means that the risk of (companion animal) coronavirus moving from pets to humans is extremely low. SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the current COVID-19 pandemic, and the coronavirus infections that occur in our pets typically do not cause severe disease and are not related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is important for pet owners to understand that the risk of contracting COVID-19 disease from their pets is exceptionally low. There is currently no scientific evidence that supports dogs and cats can transmit this infection to humans via their respiratory or gastrointestinal systems. There are concerns that pets can serve as fomites which means that the virus can contact and exist on their haircoats and skin, and then potentially transmit to
42

| MAY 2020 |
humans when they are touched or handled. How long the virus lives on the surface of an animal is currently unknown. The risk of a fomite type of exposure is increased if the pet is in direct contact with a human who has become ill from COVID-19. The current pandemic situation is having far reaching impacts on all aspects of our lives. As we all course through this difficult and stressful time it is important to understand that our animal companions are aware of our stress as well as the changes in their daily routines. Be aware that their lives are being impacted like ours and you may see the development of both systemic diseases and behavioral problems Veterinarians and our vet tech teams are essential workers, and we’re there for our clients and patients...just as we always have been. We are not on the front lines of the battle like our human doctor counterparts, but we are determined and committed to keeping our clients and their animal family members healthy and safe. Do not hesitate to reach out and contact your veterinary team with any concerns or issues.
/stylemg /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemags
It is imperative that pet owners understand they should not be euthanizing, abandoning, or removing their pets from their households. Rather, the recommendations are as follows: • Pets should remain with their owners who are self-quarantining. • For pet owners without symptoms, regular hand washing, as well as other good hygiene practices, should be maintained when interacting with pets. Regular cleaning of food bowls, water dishes, toys and bedding should be practiced as well. • Routine bathing of pets will help reduce the risk of a pet becoming a fomite and exposing their owners to COVID-19. • Owners who become ill with COVID-19 should separate themselves from their pet, just as they would a family member. • If owners have to be hospitalized, they should plan with family or friends to care for their pets. • If owners have any questions or concerns regarding COVID-19 and their animal companions, they should contact their veterinarian immediately.

Strings Café
TRY THIS: I’m always on the hunt for a good salad with a

Nékter Juice Bar
TRY THIS: Packed with a crazy amount
of taste, not to mention nutritious and fresh ingredients, I‘m huge fans of Nékter Juice Bar‘s Açaí Bowls, and our favorite is their Açaí Mango Bowl. OUR GO-TO: The Prisoner Roll with deep-fried shrimp, cucumber, spicy tuna, real crab, avocado, BBQ albacore, masago and tempura flakes TRY THIS: With plenty of unique dishes for everyone, one stands out as a “Must-Try” selection: Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna. Suishin Sushi
TRY THIS: I liken Suishin to sushi bars I used to frequent in Osaka, Japan—it has an intimate, friendly feel, but most of all, it has great sushi. TRY THIS: Loaded Nachos—while technically a “starter,”
this is a meal in itself. Crispy tortilla chips coated in cheesy goodness and loaded with a mountain of toppings including black olives, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, jalapeños, refried beans, green onion, and your choice of shredded chicken, carnitas or ground beef. Another go-to of mine is their Fish & Chips, a quintessential pub favorite, featuring hand-dipped beer battered cod served with their house-made tartar sauce with a side of fries. —WS

TRY THIS: In a sea of chain burger joints,
there is a privately-owned standout among us: Relish Burger Bar. They stand out for the exceptional, well, everything! Great beef, turkey and vegan burgers, and Kobe beef options. Perfect fries, tots and onion rings. The Relish Kobe Burger customized by adding a fried egg along with caramelized onions and Gouda cheese is my fave. Fire up the wifi, grab your electronic devices, and go explore...virtually!

With ten live cameras to choose from, you can experience the wonder of the ocean no matter where you are. montereybayaquarium.org A leopard shark swimming in the Kelp Forest exhibit. © Monterey Bay Aquarium
