ENTERTAINMENT STATE SOCIETY State Society originally began their musical journey in Vanderbijlpark and has since gone on to perform at major festivals such as Strab, Geekfest and Oppikoppi to name a few. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Cliff Barnard to find out about their latest shenanigans: Thanks for taking the time to chat Cliff, firstly let’s start off with a simple question. What influences State Society? Hi Adam, as always, it’s a pleasure being interviewed by yourself and ICED magazine. I think over the last five years our influences have evolved from mimicking our musical influences like any junior band would, to searching for the songs to write themselves. I know it sounds strange however to allow the ideas of the inner song to develop without forcing it, it’s the recipe to a great song which the listeners can relate to and possibly a song which has longevity for years to come. You guys are gearing up to release your next album entitled “Tall tales & fiction”. What can fans expect from this release? And what is different about the new album? The fans can definitely expect an evolved writing process from State Society’s first Album [This Life]. From the get go we understood we wanted a little something for everyone on the new album. The Tall Tales & Fiction theme was to highlight self-awareness, self-value and perspective of the world around you. Many are blinded by the lies and nonsense that society feeds us. We forget who we are and what makes us as individuals, content and happy. This album hopefully highlights integrity and self-worth within the cages of the current stigmas of our society. Its sounds really deep but it’s generally the common theme with a light hearted feel. We wrote “Tall Tales & Fiction” to address three levels of listeners. The rock my face off types, these songs are simple, fun filled upbeat type tracks. The second we wrote for were the more sensible, deeper, call to self-reflection songs. The third, the songs with a radio play element to it as we are aiming some songs for national and international radio play. Added to the chaos we recorded our version of the Black Keys “Lonely boy” which we have been performing live for a while now, that song always goes down well at shows so we added it to the album. We as a band are really excited to see what this album brings to the table. A huge shout out and major thank you to our sponsors K Star 7 Clothing/KLEVAS for funding this project and hooking us up with some awesome threads. It’s been a real blessing having them as our partners on this journey. You guys have had a great run of shows performing at major festivals such as Oppikoppi, what has been your highlight show thus far? We have been very busy as a band and Oppikoppi two years in a row was definitely an honour. Between Otterlake festival, STRAB festival, Oppikoppi festival, Outland festival, Speedo festival, Morock festival, Geekfest, Plushy festival, many back yard acoustic gigs, many tours to Bloem and Potch, Deity’s Muse satellites tour Hundai Rock the run, ETV Sunrise, MK89 and many more. Personally Oppikoppi and Strab were my two favourite of 2015. The crowd at Koppi 2014 and 2015 were great and I loved the trip to Mozambique for the STRAB fest having a 10am in the morning RUM like a pirate. If you could collaborate with any musician dead or alive, whom would that be and why? Me personally I’m an old school blues type man but if there was a jam session I’d love to Jam Little Richards “Lucile” and Nina Simone’s “Feelin’ Good” with them. Oh right collaboration (Laughs). I’d love to collaborate with MGMT as they are completely different to what I understand musically, however when I’m pushed into another genre,

my creativity goes to hy per drive and that is where I’m most creative, it’s really a good place to be. MGMT are amazing and it would be an interesting outcome. You have a time machine. Do you go to the future or the past? Where do you go and why? I’d go into the future, no point looking at the past but I’d probably pull a Biff Tannen on everyone. (laughs) Why did the band decide to add additional members? We would love to integrate keys into our live set, most, if not all our songs have piano, synths and extras. So for this album enter Justin Rae (Chromium, Inceptio) a killer musician on bass, guitar and keys. We needed an extra and he opted to play keys and third guitar for us. We are really excited to see what he brings to the table once we go on the Tall tales & Fiction tours. Besides the release of the new album, what is currently in the pipeline for State Society? The current pipeline plans are to play some great shows. We are setting up tour shows and finalising some music video releases Check out our Facebook page for some our shows which include some great festivals and gigs with Desmond and the Tutus, Gangs of Ballet and more. If you were stranded on an island and you could only bring 1 item. What item would that be? Sandra Bullock (laughs) Describe the band in one word Humble Thanks so much for your time Cliff. Catch you at one of your upcoming gigs. Interview by: Adam Boyd

SEAN MILES During my high school career I always eavesdropped on the blond hair boy with the golden voice, singing out loud during off periods in an abandoned class room on the 3rd floor. Within a short period of time the golden boy became one of the Vaal’s most admired and talented solo artists, Better known as Sean Miles. He achieved Platinum status in the South African Talent Championships (SATCH) receiving two platinum Medals as well as two gold medals and was chosen as one of the top ten singers in South-Africa in 2010, He also released his debut album in 2014.

Buti’s Inn

Iced Magazine recently had the privilege to interview Sean:

How do you manage your education (teacher) studies, your singing career and your entertainment business (with Monty) all together? I believe that education is the key to live any life you want to live. I am very dedicated. I’m a 3rd year student at NWU Vaal Pukke and I am enjoying every moment of it. Singing is my passion, but it is very important to me to finish my degree before I commence full steam with my singing career so that I have something to fall back on. The entertainment company is doing very well; Monty is my manager, business partner and best friend so he knows that I am unable to attend every function we are booked for. I’m sure it’s no easy path becoming a successful artist; tell us more about your journey? In order to be successful, you need to know the value of hard work, so that you always know where you come from, and that, makes the whole journey worth it. It has not always been easy for me to be persistent in my career. I have had many ups and downs and a lot of money has been spent to get the right product out to the listeners and the supporters.

Since I started singing, I have gained so many people who are always there for me, always ready to give advice when something does not seem right, but as an artist. I have improved in my performances over the years, which makes you as a singer determined to do even better with the next shows that you are booked for. There is always room for improvement. You are an active contributor to numerous fundraising projects; please do elaborate. God has given me all this talent and I owe it to him to give back to the public what he has placed within me. I recently sang at a fundraising project where people came together and made abuse, drug abuse etc, to the public which took place at the Heilbron Lion farm, And later in April I will be performing at a fundraiser at Malonjeni guest farm for a little girl who desperately needs cochlea implants. Doing these types of how are not always easy and of course charity and fundraisers are not the ideal shows to do, because you as an artist gets exposed to so many problems which you are previously un aware of which makes a person emotional. You also do not get paid, but if I sing for an organization, and I sell only one CD for the day, its payment enough knowing that I have put a smile on someone’s face. In Sept last year, you performed at Harts-Gevoel’s ladies tea, you literally raised the roof, (the ladies are still talking about it) is it important to you, to always have a fun stage personality when performing? The Harts-Gevoel’s ladies tea was one of the highlights in my show calendar last year. Not only did I get to perform on a stage with a good friend of mine, Juan Boucher, but it was so much fun and the response from every single person who attended was spectacular, the whole feeling and spirit in the room was unforgettable!!! I feel that when you do a show for 100 people or whether you do a show for 10 people, it is important to keep You recently released a new single, “alleen in di reen” how is the feedback on the song? “Alleen in die reen” is a song that I wrote for anyone who has lost a loved one in their life due to death, divorce, fights etc, which they cannot go a day without thinking about. The reaction on the song has been phenomenal. It is currently on the top 20 charts of 19 different radio stations in South Africa as well as overseas and still growing.

15

If you could record a duet with any artist local or international using one of your own songs, who will the artist be? And the song? Why? This is a difficult one, If I could record with a local artist I would definitely love to do a duet with Karen Zoid, and the song I would do could be ”Skoene”, The reason is that Karen Zoid is such an amazing vocalist, and an exquisite song writer. If you could film one of your music videos anywhere in the world, where will it be? The song? Why? The next step is to make a Music Video for Alleen in die reën and I would love to have it filmed in the Cape. Cape Town has just always been such a beautiful place and it has always been one of my dreams to make a video there. When can we expect a new album? Hopefully early next year as my previous album is already 2 years old. I need to work on a few more songs to release the album and hopefully get a few sponsors to help initiate the plan. Any big projects/surprises coming in the near future? I’m working on getting a role as an actor in one of the Afrikaans TV series, but I cannot elaborate on that just yet. Any funny stories to share that happened on stage? I was at a show where many people were singing on the same day, and I sang, and accidentally knocked my microphone on my tooth and let out a swear word which was not too bad but I ended up laughing so hard it took everything for me to stop laughing, and during my next song I started giggling all over again and couldn’t sing further. Seven Degrees of Separation We have all had our hearts broken or maybe we have contributed to breaking hearts. But there is nothing in life as painful as having your heart broken by the one you have sombrely loved. Somehow the song ‘Six Degrees of Separation by The Script’ has confirmed that we do not even now what we have gone through until we have completed all the degrees of separation... When we in desperate need of answers or healing, we just about go to extremes to find it... We have our fortunes told, we mediate, we get hypnotized, we read all kind of books, and watch all kind of television shows. We drink excessively. We cry with our friends and talk to strangers. We do anything for empathy or a arm around us. But here is what we really need to know: 1. The worst is your broken heart: There is really nothing more painful than having your heart broken! 2. What kills you in this second part: This part is when truth and realization collides. You will wake up one morning and grasp that your relationship is truly over and that the probability of them coming back is zero. You will experience the bitterness of loss and rejection that creeps up to you like a best friend wanting to embrace you and never let go. 3. Your world splits down the middle: This is the most painful phase of separation. You hit rock bottom in every sense possible. The agony of loss and rejection deepens with time, and somehow you are so indebted in your suffering that you won’t even notice the smallest of beautiful experiences happening around you. You become invincible to the world and everything you touch spirals into destruction. Time becomes your enemy..

5. You see them out with someone else: Nothing in life prepares you enough for that moment when you have to see the one you love with someone else, and I don’t think anything will. Acceptance is just another obstacle you will have endure. 6. Admitting that you may have screwed up a little: This is the sweet part of salvation. Admitting that some of your actions, your deeds, deliberately or not intentionally have contributed to the outcome of your relationship. This part is where you have to face very hard realities about the person you loved, your relationship and yourself. Did you want to hurt the one you loved? No! Why did you? Because we are human, and we have years of pain and trauma we experience because of life. We have never properly healed, and our sub-conscious actions becomes the aftermath. 7. Being freed: I wish I knew this earlier... I’ve been a warrior all my life fighting very hard and unnecessary battles not just for myself but everyone I loved. There is a time in your life where we need to realise certain battles is far above the human struggle and needs to be placed in the hands of God. I can’t emphasize the phenomenon of ‘letting go’ and ‘letting God’. There is power in prayer! There is peace in this process that I cannot explain, and then something like this will start happening to your spirit: ‘I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.’ Ezekiel 36:26, and that’s when you know you are ready to have room in your heart for love again...

4. You think that you have fixed yourself: This is what I call ‘you are braver then you think phase’. After your tears have literally dried up, you have spend a reckless amount of money on counselling, drinking, reading, you somehow believe that you have fixed yourself, and that you are ready to face the world. A caution of warning, to really have inner healing in your heart requires a tremendous amount of forgiveness. If you still react with anger, hate, tears, or slightly twitch at the thought of your ex, you are not fixed - believe me - you are a walking time bomb!

Leicester City is on the brink of an epic underdog tale as they might win the English Premier League title. They are on top of the table with an 8 point lead over Tottenham Hotspurs with only 4 games to go, although the Spurs have one more game in hand. If you don’t know how much of an underdog they were before the season started, here is some perspective. The bookies in England gave them 5000/1 odds. So for a R20 note you will have a chance of winning a whopping R100 000. The Foxes are in good position to rewrite the history books with their first ever league title, that will ensure one of the best ever underdog stories. A truly epic underdog story is based on the love of the particular sport; yes Spurs fans will have hope and still has a mathematical chance of winning. Every other club’s fans should secretly be rooting for Leicester City because who doesn’t love

18

the underdog. If they win the league it will be huge for football standards in all tiers of the game and youngsters will know that with hard work you can achieve you. Leicester’s team value is an estimate £54.4 million with Tottenham estimated at £161.1 million. Surely the Foxes players’ values will go up as part of their success. Putting this even more in perspective is that Kevin de Bruyne cost Man City £54 million alone. It really makes you feel good seeing that money can buy talent but hard work and commitment can outshine all the money in the Premier League. I am a Liverpool supporter but we are out of contention and I will always support them but now I am secretly rooting for Leicester to win the League. By Pierre Lamont
