APPY SPRING This issue is extra special, because we’ve taken the plunge into the world of digital publishing. Starting this spring, you will find Styled Right on the iTunes newstand, and you can easily subscribe, read and shop the content from your iPad. Not gonna lie: it’s pretty cool to see our little magazine up there next to the “real” magazines. We think the new and improved Styled Right is more interactive and much easier to shop--which is good, considering the main goal of this magazine is to make shopping in all forms easier for you all. The app version isn’t free, because we have to hire some app wizards to make it possible, but a) it’s totally worth a little extra and b) it still costs less than our other favorites, like InStyle, Vogue or Lucky. A yearly subscription to Styled Right will run you $8.99, less than a necklace at Forever 21. And for now, we’ll keep publishing the free version via Issuu.com for you to enjoy download and share.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE MOMS This issue was originally supposed to be a special mommy issue, dedicated exclusively to motherhood and stylish Seattle mammas. After a very pregnant Molly Mesnick agreed to grace our cover, the plan was to pack the pages with fashion and beauty tips specifically geared to busy mothers. But as we gathered content and spoke to moms (our clients, friends, and the many generous contributors to this issue who have kids), we realized that all women--those with children and those without--experience the same daily fashion challenges: we all want to get ready more quickly in the morning, we all want to take better care of ourselves, be comfortable and look chic (affordably!) every day. So whether you’re childless, have a new baby or have childen in college, there’s something for you in this issue. We sincerely hope you enjoy, and we wish everyone a super stylish spring!

We’ve always thought the place was somehow fashion-y, and apparently, we’re not the only ones: Metropolitan Fashion Week is hosting their closing gala and fashion show there in April. G. Forget emerald green, Pantone’s Color of the Year. We prefer mint green. This lovely hue is our favorite color to wear right now.

(B)ESTHETICIAN Seattle’s top facialist Susan Grace of Suite 300 in Ballard answers your most pressing skincare questions “I feel like my skin has dual personalities. I’m super dry and flakey around my chin but my forehead is like an oil slick. What’s the solution to this? I’m at a total loss!” P.L. Edmonds, WA It sounds like you have a classic case of combination skin. Finding a skincare routine that works for your particular needs will probably take some persistence and some detective work. First question to ask yourself: is there anything that might topically be causing the forehead oiliness, such as hair products? Next, consider your diet; pay attention to when you are having a ‘dry’ vs. ‘shiny’ day and consider what you ate that day or the day before. This will help you get to the bottom of what could be affecting your complexion. Once you figure out your patterns, here is an easy regimen to help your skin maintain a healthy balance: Step 1: Cleanse and exfoliate. The goal is to remove the surface impurities without irritating the skin (which can lead to more dryness). I suggest using the Cleanse and Exfoliate products from Bio-Therapeutic. The cleanser is a mild and water-based foamy emulsion that contains Azulene to soothe both dry and oily skin, while the exfoliant is a concentrate of jojoba beads and papaya enzymes that is gentle enough to use daily. Step 2: Moisturize (Yes, even the oily parts). Depriving the oily portions of your skin will only cause your skin to produce more oil. I recommend the Hydra Original Ultra-Moisturizing Fluid by Phytomer. When you apply the product, start with your chin and work your way up to your forehead, lightly pat your oily zone with the residual fluid to ensure you are using appropriate portions for your skin care needs.

“I have small white bumps on my face, mostly on my cheeks. They don’t hurt, I can’t pop them, and they aren’t going away. What are they and how do I get rid of them?” K.L., Seattle, WA Those small white bumps are called milia and are usually caused by dead cells that are trapped beneath the epidermis. While harmless, milia are cosmetically annoying and you are exactly right: you can’t pop them, and they will not go away on their own. Milia have to be extracted by a skin care professional. Don’t worry, the removal is quick and has little to no downtime afterwards. My advice? Book a facial ASAP. “What’s the best way to keep my lips from getting all flakey in the winter?” L.S., Tacoma, WA Dealing with chapped lips is just another joy of the bleak, wintery season. Stay away from lip treatments containing a menthol-type preparation such as camphor, mint or eucalyptus. These ingredients might feel good when first applied, but they can dry out your lips even more. My best tip is to use Sugar Lip Polish by Fresh a few times a week before bed. This will remove the flakes and leave your lips feeling super smooth.

#2 MISTAKE: No styling product

If you fail to use volumizer, hairpray, mousse or other products to lock in your hairdo, don’t be surprised if it falls flat fast. It only takes a few extra seconds to add a styling product, but the result is all-day hold. #3 MISTAKE: Daily hair washing

Overwashing can really dry out your hair over time, and clean hair is the most difficult to style (and takes the most time). Get acquainted with dry shampoo to take advantage of second day hair!

Get ready in five minutes Some mornings, the piercing sound of our alarm clock is physically painful. We barely have enough energy to open our eyes and crawl towards the coffee pot, and curling our hair or attempting a trendy smokey eye seems completely impossible. What we need on these mornings is a Beauty Shortcut, a simplified and dumbed-down version of our daily hair and make-up ritual that makes us look like we have it together (even if we don’t). Here are some tips to help you face the day in a flash: Adapt your beauty routine to your lifestyle. Maybe you used to have 45 minutes all to yourself to get ready in the morning, when you lived by yourself and didn’t have kids, a partner and pets to tend to. It’s okay if you don’t have that much time to yourself anymore. Be realistic. If you only have 10 minutes to do your hair and make-up, then you should maximize your time by inventing a new 10-minute beauty routine that works for you. Establish a Bare Minimum. Some days, you only have time to do ONE thing. So make it count. Play up your favorite feature. Love your eyes? Swipe on mascara. Have a great smile? Pop on some lip stick. Doing the bare minimum is always better than doing nothing.

Have a to-go kit. The next time you buy cosmetics, ask for sample sizes of your favorite foundation, moisturizer, perfume and mascara. Add a few other drugstore essentials, like travel-size wrinkle removal spray, a mini lint roller and lip gloss. Keep this kit in your car or in your purse, so you can make yourself up on the go. Update your skill set. When it comes to your make-up, don’t be a one trick pony. You should have several tricks up your sleeve at all times. Once or twice a year, go get your make-up professionally done. Take notes, ask about techniques and be open to product recommendations. Obey your alarm. Set your alarm so that you have enough time to do everything you need to do, and resist hitting the snooze button. Ask yourself: “What’s more important? Sleeping for 10-20 more minutes or looking good for eight or more hours?” Prep the night before. Evenings are generally quieter and less stressful. Take advantage of this by showering and laying out your outfit the night before. Finally, always wash your face before you go to sleep. Failing to wash your skin at night can lead to breakouts, dull skin and premature aging; you’ll need less make-up in the morning if you treat your skin well at night.

Are you doing everything you can to keep your shoes and purses looking new? Here are the Golden Rules to make your favorite accessories sparkle.

Golden Shoe Rules

Always store your shoes in a cool, dry place. Direct sunlight can cause the color on your shoes to fade (especially on leather and cloth), and moist air can cause mildew to infect your shoes. If your shoes get wet (say, after wearing on a rainy day) let them dry completely in open air before you put them away. Don’t toss all your shoes into a giant free-for-all pile; not only is it impossible to find mates when you need them, dog-piling can damage and dirty your entire shoe collection. If you have limited space in your closet, a shoe tree will work well to keep shoes organized and protected. Your shoes will last longer if you don’t wear the same pair every day. Try to rotate your shoes and give them at least one day to rest in between wears to air out and recover their shape. Suede shoes require suede cleaner. If you’re removing mud from suede, allow it to dry completely and remove as much as possible with a dry towel or soft brush; then, use a suede cleaner spray to remove the rest of the stain. Vaseline or vegetable oil can be used to remove scuffs and polish leather boots (apply in circular motions with a dry towel). Windex or glass cleaner can be used to clean and polish patent leather. The cap on your heel will likely wear down after about 2-3 dozen wears--this is normal wear and tear. Get your heels replaced by a cobbler as soon as possible to avoid permanent damage to the structure of the shoe.

Many shoes come with replacement heel caps; remove your old cap with a pair of pliers and secure the new ones with a hammer. Try not to drive in your heels. The pressure you put on your right heel by stepping on the gas pedal can cause damage to the stem of your heel.

Golden Purse Rules

Don’t put your purse on the floor, where it will pick up germs and dirt. Try to keep it elevated (on your lap, chair or a tabletop). Use your dusters! Dusters are the cloth bags that come with most purses. Dusters are made of natural, breathable fibers to prevent molding and discoloring, and a protective bag will minimize accidental scratching. A clean cotton t-shirt will also work well. Avoid wearing suede bags when it’s raining, because suede can be irreparably damaged by water. If a suede bag does get wet, let it dry in a cool, dry place (never put it by a heat source to speed up the drying process). Turn your bag upside down regularly to shake out crumbs and debris that collect in the bottom. This will prevent build up and get rid off unwanted odors that may build up over time. Store your bags upright--never stack them or lay them on their sides--and stuff them as needed to maintain the shape of the bag. Soft leather satchels and hobo bags especially need support in storage. File folders from an office supply store are perfect for storing small thin purses like envelope clutches.

As someone who shops for a living, I find myself at a mall almost every day. Sometimes, I even visit two or three malls in a single afternoon. My goal is always the same: get in and out as quickly as possible and buy everything on my list. Most of my clients say, “That sounds like a nightmare,” and they ask me how I do it without going crazy. Here’s how I do it, and how you can, too! Tip #1: Ask an expert. How often have you been shopping when a salesperson has asked, “Can I help you find something?” and you’ve answered, “No, thank you,” simply as a reflex (when really, come to think of it, maybe you do need help)? Next time, think of the salesperson as your friend, not your enemy. Tell him/her exactly what you’re looking for, and be as specific as possible: “Yes, I’m looking for a tan trench coat with a hood in a size 12.” Salespeople know where everything is located on the sales floor, and they can find what you’re looking for more quickly than you can. Sure, a salesperson may encourage you to buy things or make recommendations beyond what you asked for, but you don’t need to feel pressure to buy anything you don’t want. Tip #2: Always try everything on. I say, if you don’t have time to try things on, then you shouldn’t go shopping in the first place. What’s worse: taking five minutes while you’re already at the mall to see if something fits or risking another dreaded trip to the mall to return it, if you get it home and it doesn’t work? Tip #3: Shop on a weekday. It’s no secret that malls are busier on the weekends. If you want to avoid the business, go on a weekday. Tuesday is a great day to shop, because new shipments usually come in on Mondays (to replenish everything that was sold over the weekend), and it can take some stores a full day to get the new merchandise out on the sales floor. Tip #4: Go alone. If you really want to be swift, leave your hubby, your girlfriends and your kids

at home. Shopping with other people not only takes longer, it usually results in making purchases you wouldn’t make if you were shopping solo. Tip #5: Call ahead. It’s ok to call a store to ask if they have the thing you’re looking for before you head to the mall. I generally call first thing in the morning, right when the store opens (or, more precisely, five minutes before they open, when I know the sales team is already at work but they aren’t yet helping other customers). If they have what you’re looking for, ask them to hold it for you. Better yet? Ask the name of the sales person whom you’re speaking to on the phone and tell them when you’re planning to come to the store. Many sales people work on commission, so they’ll appreciate getting the sale. Plus, they’ll be expecting you, so you’ll get out of the store a lot quicker. Tip #6: Use your smartphone. If you see something you like, but think you may be able to buy it cheaper somewhere else, take a picture of the sales tag and style number. You can Google items by brand and UPC (which is the numerical bar code on the sales tag). You can also download a barcode scanner app--I like RedLaser, it’s free--and scan the item yourself. RedLaser will tell you everywhere a particular item is available and how much it costs at nearby stores and online retailers. Many malls also have helpful shopping apps to help minimize stress. I love Westfield’s free app, which offers directories of every property in the United States, acts as a personal concierge and lets me know which stores are having sales. STYLEDRIGHT 17

Strap Stretch

STEP ONE: Take your strap (at home, you can use a belt or a towel) and loop it over the arches of your feet. STEP TWO: Straighten both legs and pull them towards you as far as you can with your hips firmly on the floor. STEP THREE: Take one foot out of the strap and lower your leg down to the floor in front of you. When your leg reaches the floor, flex your foot and firmly press your calf and ankle down to the ground. Re-straighten your upper leg and keep it straight as you stretch. Keep your lower leg straight and pressed down into the floor. STEP FOUR: Draw your upper, extended leg closer to you by bending your elbows outwards to the side. Relax your neck, and press your shoulders down into the floor. Breathe deeply. As you hold this position, moment by moment your hamstring muscles are relaxing and extending. STEP FIVE: Switch legs and repeat stretch.

Lunge Stretch

STEP ONE: Kneel on a yoga mat or carpet and step your left foot forward. STEP TWO: Bend your left knee and press your back hip forward and down so that you are lunging. STEP THREE: Raise your arms and lift your chest. To deepen the stretch in the front of your body, press your arms back an inch or two more. Hold a few seconds and then switch sides. Style Tip: When you are trying on clothes at a store, always move around in the fitting room. Sit, bend, stretch your arms and walk around the store. Some fitting areas are so small, we forget to experience a full range of motion before we buy. If comfort is crucial to you, don’t buy anything that restricts your movement.

How to layer like a stylist one

Layer one: We started with a printed tunic over vegan leather leggings. We loved the colors and pattern featured on the tunic, but on its own the tunic looks disporportionate and bulkly. This layer lacks definition and a focal point. Layer two: We added a long necklace and a magenta suede shoe. The necklace features the same shades of green and black that are present on the tunic (so it complements the look but doesn’t compete with it), and the pink shoe adds height and a pop of color. The model looks noticeablely taller and leaner. Layer three: Finally, we added a leopard print coat, a second gold necklace and a clutch. Stylists think of leopard print as a neutral, and in this outfit it coordinates especially well with the tunic’s gold and brown tones. The gold necklace draws attention to the top of the outfit and adds a strong architectual element. As a last step, we rolled the sleeves to reveal a green satin lining--a small detail that completes the look. STYLEDRIGHT 30

Layer one: We started with a pretty mint green silk peplum blouse over a plaid pencil skirt with tights. The tights have a subtle herringbone pattern that adds texture and interest to the bottom half of the outfit. It’s a great start, but this layer looks a little messy. Layer two: We tucked in the blouse into the skirt, which made a huge difference to the look. Tucking the blouse defines the waist and makes the model look significantly taller. We also added a statement necklace and black leather pumps. Pairing black shoes with black tights elongates the legline. Layer three: We topped off the look with a cropped leather biker jacket. The cropped jacket is porportionately perfect and doesn’t overwhelm the look. The bright yellow bag adds an unexpected burst of bright color. DIY: Nail Sticker Manicures

What’s the secret to getting salon-perfect nails at home? Nail stickers! No painting, no drying and no chipping for up to 10 days. The stylists at Styled Right have been road testing nail stickers for over a year. Here’s our technique and tips to help you get it right, every time. STEP ONE: SET THE MOOD

Warning, this process is going to take at least 30 minutes start-to-finish (maybe longer if you’re an intricate perfectionist). So give yourself enough time. Carve out an evening once a week, perhaps during your favorite television show. Pour yourself a glass of wine or cup of tea. Light a candle. Make it a “thing.” Your nails will turn out much better if you give it your full attention. Plus, you deserve a little pampering!

STEP TWO: PREP YOUR HANDS AND NAILS

Start by clipping and filing your nails (note: don’t go TOO short, because you’ll end up filing a little during the sticker-ing process). You’ll also want to push down and remove any overgrown cuticles and buff your nails. We also recommend using an exfoliator and lotion to make your hands extra soft.

STEP THREE: CLEAN YOUR NAILS

It’s essential that your nails are bone dry before you put the stickers on, especially after using lotion or oily hand products. Put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and carefully rub every nail.

STEP FOUR: SELECT AND APPLY STICKERS

There are many different brands available online and at drugstores (see our favorites below). Read the instructions carefully and follow each brand’s specific instructions. Place the sticker on your bare nail (note: do not use a basecoat! The stickers won’t stay on as long). Press down firmly and rub swiftly to warm the sticker and make sure it adheres to your nail. Then, file over the tip for a perfect fit.

STEP FIVE: TOP COAT

Many nail stickers claim to be a one-step process not requiring a top coat. But we recommend putting a quick-dry top coat over your stickers. Not only does it make them last a little longer, it give them that gel polish finish.

What is a Fit Model? by Carol Lin

Have you ever wondered why some clothing brands fit differently than others? How a size 6 at Banana Republic may be totally different than a size 6 at another store? Every clothing brand adjusts their measurements to fit a specific target consumer. Some brands want their clothing to fit a curvier figure, while others design for a customer who is long and lean. Brands hire fit models--real people, professional models--to try the clothing on during the design process. Designers get to see the clothing on a real body, and they adjust the designs to the model’s figure. There’s a lot of trial and error in the process of creating a garment that looks good and fits well. Fit models help ensure the garments are moveable, flattering and wearable; it’s one thing to sketch a design or create a garment on a mannequin, but it’s another to put that garment on a real moving person. We wanted to know what the process is like from the perspective of the fit model. So we asked local model Natalie Levine, who has been modeling for nearly a decade and works frequently as a fit model for brands like Nordstrom and Zumiez, to give us the scoop! Question: Everybody knows about runway models and print models, but there has been less publicity about fit models. Can you tell us a bit about what you do? Answer: Before a clothing item is put out in stores or even on the runway, the designers hire a fit model to try on the clothing to examine fit and determine if any adjustments need to be made. I will try on racks and racks of clothing and come out and show each piece to the designer or corporate team. Often, the items are not even fully put together yet and there will be a piece of material pinned to the shirt to give an idea as to how it will look after being manufactured. During these fittings, someone on the design team may suggest, say, adding leather to the sleeve STYLEDRIGHT 34

of a jacket, and someone else will report how much adding the leather would cost. Finalizing the design is often a team effort! Q: Do you get to influence the design at all? A: It depends. Often the design team will ask me how something feels, and sometimes I will be asked my opinion on how the design may be improved. Q: Being a fit model means having to maintain very precise body measurements. Is it hard to control your weight so strictly? A: Yes! Gaining an inch or even a few centimeters can have a huge impact on


my career. It’s all about developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that works for me. I eat healthy and exercise daily to maintain my measurements. When it comes to my diet, I don’t set unrealistic goals nor do I completely deprive myself from cravings. It is part of my job to stay fit, so I have learned to have fun working out.

Day in the life

Q: What have you learned about clothing that you didn’t know before you started working as a fit model? A: There is so much work that goes into each and every piece of clothing, and so many people involved in the process that the initial vision could be very different than the final piece. Q: And how did you get into modeling? A: I have always had an interest in the fashion industry and modeling, but I wanted to graduate from college before pursing it. One day, after class at the University of Washington, I was scouted by a model agent (I was wearing sweatpants). I decided to go meet with the agency, just to see. Within two weeks I had booked a huge job with Tommy Hilfiger and signed a contract. I was 19. I graduated from UW two years later, and after graduation, I began modeling internationally for months at a time in different countries. I absolutely love it and am so thankful to have had such wonderful opportunities. Q: How frequently do you work and how many hours per session? A: I work every week, anywhere from one to 12+ hours a day. Some fit modeling is seasonal, but I also model in-studio for e-commerce, print jobs, fashion

Molly’s Reality

M

olly Mesnick arrived to her Styled Right photo shoot eight months pregnant, looking relaxed and casually comfortable. Even without a bit of make-up, she was all smiles and glowing in the sort of cliche way one expects all pregnant women to glow; and, gurl, she came to play! Molly tried on an entire rack’s-worth of comfy, floaty dresses from chic Seattle boutiques like Jack Jerome and The Finerie (not a single true maternity dress in the bunch) and swooned over the borrowed vintage jewelry. Not many people would agree to pose for photos at the very uncomfortable end of their pregnancy--and even fewer would fit perfectly into a Phillip Lim sample size four!--but Molly Mesnick is not most people. Fan’s of ABC’s The Bachelor know Molly from Season 13, when, in a dramatic final twist of fate, she ended up with (and eventually married to) Jason Mesnick, the handsome single father from Washington state. Even though cynics everywhere said they would never last, Molly and Jason celebrated their third wedding anniversary this year, and on March 14th they welcomed Riley Anne Mesnick, their first child together. Right before Molly gave birth, we enlisted Sydney Chavez, fashion expert and founder of Gossip & Glamour (and one of the most savvy, stylish mothers we know) to ask Molly every possibly inappropriate pregnancy question, like “What are you most excited to wear after you lose the baby weight?” Molly didn’t hold back, giving us an honest and fun glimpse into her next chapter as a new mom.

Styled Right: What are you most excited about when it comes to motherhood? Molly Mesnick: I have absolutely loved being a stepmom to Ty (Jason’ biological son). Doing fun mommy activities like hosting birthday parties, going to school functions and sporting events has opened up a new world for me. So I can only imagine what it will be like to do those things and more with my own kiddo! SR: What kinds of baby books have you been reading? MM: I’m such a bad pregnant person. I haven’t read any books or taken any classes. I guess I figure I can rely on Google whenever questions come up. SR: What’s the theme for the baby’s room and how did you pick it? MM: Jillian Harris, who was on The Bachelor with us and moved on to be a designer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, designed the nursery. It’s AMAZING! Because we decided not to find out the sex of the baby before the birth, we did an all grey and white room. It’s very clean and elegant for a boy or girl, which I love. SR: What made you decide to keep the baby’s gender a surprise? MM: Jason found out the gender with Ty, so he wanted to do it a little differently this time around. How could I argue with that? I am a planner by nature, but I have to say, leaving the gender unknown has made the anticipation even more exciting. SR: Who do you have on speed dial to call when you have baby questions? MM: My sister! She has two kids, a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old, so she’s been through this a couple of times. She has already been so helpful by telling me which baby items I really need and which ones I don’t. SR: The advice to all new parents is “sleep now!” Have you been getting enough sleep? MM: Ironically, I’ve had quite a bit of energy throughout the back half of my pregnancy, so a solid 8 hours each night is all I’ve needed. My sleep is starting to get interrupted by middle-ofthe-night bathroom breaks, but I’m surviving. SR: Have you had any funny moments during your pregnancy that you can share? MM: Nothing major. HOW TO GET BACK TO YOUR PRE-BABY WEIGHT There’s no secret. The only way to fit into your skinny jeans after giving birth is through smart diet and excercise. The fitness experts at Elite Fitness have helped many women shed baby weight quickly and safely. Here, they share their best advice for new moms: 1. Work Out. Getting into a fitness routine during your pregnancy will keep you strong, and help you through a potentially exhausting labor and delivery. In our experience, women who train during their pregnancy get back their “pre-baby” bodies faster than women who don’t. 2. Don’t eat for two. During pregnancy, your portion sizes should not double. Remember, a baby requires less food than an adult (it certainly doesn’t need it’s own adult-size helping of macaroni and cheese!). 3. Interval Train. After your delivery, once you receive a green light from your doctor to exercise, start with interval training. Studies show High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), sheds more fat and burns more calories than steady jogging or biking. Start by doing fast intervals of running for 90 secs, followed by 30 secs of walking. 4. Weight Train. Lifting weights will build lean muscle tissue and burn more calories. When you’re sore, you’re experiencing muscle tissue breakdown. The repair of those sore muscles results in tons of burned calories (even while you’re sleeping). 5. Eat smart and often. Once you’ve had your baby, you can no longer use pregnancy cravings as an excuse to eat whatever you want. Make sure to eat whole, healthy foods and stay away from processed foods. Also, try not to go longer than three hours between meals so you never get famished and eat too much.


son laugh so hard, though, is when I attempt to get out of bed in the morning. I’m not as flexible and mobile as I used to be, so I grunt like an old man every morning as I roll out of bed. SR: If you had to recommend one thing (it can be anything) to new moms that has really helped you during your pregnancy what would it be? MM: A body pillow! It changed my world. It looks like we have a third person sleeping with us at night, but it really helps. It’s so comfy, there is no doubt I’ll use it for forever, even when I’m not pregnant. SR: How have you been feeling during your pregnancy? MM: I had a pretty rough first trimester with morning sickness. It was almost immediately after I moved into my second trimester that I started to feel human again. Since then, I’ve had an incredible amount of energy, and I’ve never been so productive. It’s been great! SR: I understand you’ve been doing prenatal yoga. Was that something you did before getting pregnant? MM: I’m not a big fitness fanatic, never have been, but I knew that I needed to keep my body moving during pregnancy to keep me healthy and energized. Prenatal yoga has been amazing for stretching out my muscles in all of the right places. The class is catered specifically to pregnant women, so the instructor knows exactly what we all need. SR: What’s your prenatal beauty routine? Are there new products you’ve started using and/or products you’ve stopped using while pregnant? MM: My biggest fear with pregnancy was that my face would get really broken out, but I’ve been VERY lucky that my skin has almost gotten better. That said, I haven’t had to use anything new; but I have stopped coloring my hair, so I am ready to get back into a salon! SR: Thanks to Hollywood there’s a lot of pressure for new moms to get back into shape quickly. Do you feel that pressure? MM: It’s not that I feel pressure to get back in to shape, it’s that I WANT to get back in to

shape. I feel like my body has been taken over, and I’m ready to have it back. I’ve always been a relatively small person, so adding an extra 20 pounds has started to wear on me. I’m ready to start moving at a normal speed again. SR: Has your pregnancy been different than you expected? What were you most worried/anxious about in the beginning? MM: Aside from the morning sickness, I’ve had a relatively easy pregnancy. If anything, I’ve felt more awkward about being pregnant than I expected. It feels strange to have conversations with people about what’s happening with my body. I’m definitely not one of those women who loves being pregnant and everything that comes with it. SR: What does personal style mean to you? MM: I’ve always described my style as “on trend.” It’s not original in any way, but it makes me feel comfortable. I wear what’s hot at the moment, and I move on to the next trend when the time comes. For me, style is what makes you feel comfortable and confident! SR: What unexpected styling changes have you adopted since being pregnant? MM: Nothing has really changed for me. I haven’t worn maternity clothes, so really, I’m pulling items from my closet and putting outfits together just like I did before I was pregnant. I generally have a serious shopping problem, but I haven’t done much shopping (for myself) in the past six months. I think I’ve been more conscious that I likely won’t be able to wear these clothes again, so I don’t want to spend a bunch of money right now. SR: How would you describe your maternity style? MM: Comfy chic. I wear a lot of leggings, paired with cute, flowy tops. I look put together, but I feel like I’m wearing sweats. SR: Celebrities like Rachel Zoe and Victoria Beckham have set the pace for chic mommy style. How do you anticipate having a baby will change your signature style? Sure, it’s a few inches longer than your capris, but I doubt you’ll experience heatstroke due to the extra fabric. You can also wear a knee-length skirt in the summer with a bare leg. That’s a cool option and, again, much more flattering than capris.

I also always keep healthy snacks in my bag, hair ties, lotion, lip-gloss, concealer, MAC Body Foundation and job vouchers to record my hours so I can get paid.

hope my style doesn’t change at all! I still want to rock high heels, bright pink lipstick and fake lashes. Of course, there will be plenty of days where I’m in sweatpants, but that’s what Lululemon is for. If anything, pregnancy has made me more anxious to get back to a normal size and try some new trends!

Q: How long is the career lifespan of a fit model? And what will you do at the end of it? A: It really varies. Many designers develop clothing lines targeted for multiple age brackets and they may be looking specifically for an older fit model. If you develop a strong relationship with a certain client, they will likely carry you throughout your career. It takes time to establish these loyal relationships, but once you do, and you treat them well, these companies can really give you longevity and keep you working for a long time. Luckily, I do a lot of hand modeling, too, so I think I have awhile before my hands age too much (at least, I hope I do!). Also, I do have my business degree from UW, and although I am running my own business as a professional model, I also hope to branch out one day and do something unique in the fashion industry.

SR: What’s the one clothing item you can’t live without right now? MM: Leggings! I live in them. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on maternity pants, so leggings were the best option for me. They are inexpensive, comfortable, and look cute paired with a chiffon tunic and boots! SR: What are you most excited to wear once you have the baby and can get back into your regular clothes? MM: DENIM! I haven’t worn a pair of jeans in forever! I’m a huge fan of colored denim. With all of the spring apparel and colors coming out, I’m experiencing serious denim envy right now. SR: What advice do you have for pregnant moms when it comes to making the most of their baby bump? Are there certain styles that you like to wear to accentuate your adorable bump? MM: I don’t love wearing really tight clothes, which goes back to feeling a bit awkward about pregnancy, so I’ve been wearing a ton of loose, flowy tops. Many times, people can’t even tell that I’m pregnant, which then makes it more fun to say that you are, because they always give a huge compliment on how good you look. SR: What beauty products will you be bringing with you to the hospital? MM: So many people have told me not to bother bringing any beauty products to the hospital because you simply are too tired to care. But so many photos are going to be taken, and I do not want to look back and say, “yikes, why didn’t someone hand me some concealer?” My entire make-up bag will definitely be making the trip to the hospital with me.


SR: What must-have items are packed in your hospital bag? MM: Chapstick! I’m told that this is a major necessity after labor and while nursing. SR: Have you picked out any outfit to bring the baby home in? If so, what is it? MM: I’m a bit of a control freak, and I have been the decision-maker in every aspect of this baby’s life so far. I realized that I should probably let Jason have a say in something, since it IS his baby, too, so he’s going to pick out the “coming home” outfit.
