From Your Stylist I am SO ready for warm weather! Not just for obvious fashion reasons, like cropped pants, flirty dresses and open-toed shoes (although I’m ready for those, too). I’m excited to watch my clients blossom along with the trees and flowers. At Styled.Seattle, we know it’s springtime when our office phone starts lighting up with clients wanting to clean out their closets and go shopping. April and May are--by far--our busiest makeover months of the year (that’s part of the reason this magazine is coming out several weeks later than I originally planned…). This time of year, men and women want OUT of black and grey; they want to feel excited and re-energized, regardless of the weather forecast. You see, we can’t control the actual weather—we may have to deal with rain and gloomy skies well into July—but we can control what we wear. We can wear something bright and sunny even if the sun isn’t actually shining. I even have a theory that a colorful wardrobe is a legit cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder, because it’s impossible to be SAD when you’re wearing something happy. In honor of spring, this issue is all about fun, fresh style. We have hair styling tips, shopping advice (of course!), beauty recommendations (including an SPF in powder form that will change your life!), an editorial featuring our favorite swimwear by local designers and inspirational insight from one of our brightest clients, Jessica Eaves Mathews. Bottom line: we want you to feel invigorated and empowered, both in and out of your closet, this spring.
Darcy Camden Enjoy!

stylespotlight: By Darcy Camden Personal stylists have the opportunity to work very closely with inspiring women every day. Often, we end up learning just as much from our clients as they learn from us. In 2009, I met Jessica Eaves Mathews, a dynamic and talented woman searching for a style to reflect her personality and support her busy professional life. I was instantly enchanted by her energetic spirit and creative business sense. Jessica has offered me tons of valuable advice over the years, and I couldn’t wait to interview her and ask her to share some of the secrets of her success.
Darcy Camden: Jessica, your life is so full and
inspiring! How many jobs/passions do you have?
Jessica Eaves Mathews:
So many! I am a
self-proclaimed multi-passionate entrepreneur and right now I have four companies, and I have multiple roles within each company. It may seem overwhelming, but I'm at my best when I can be totally creative. From an extracurricular standpoint, my biggest passion is riding and showing my two Arabian horses. I am also passionate about travel, amazing food and wine and books. But the job that inspires me the most is being a mom. I have the most amazing, wonderful, funny, incredible 8-yearold daughter, and she is the reason I get up and do what I do everyday. DC: Describe your perfect day. JEM: I love variety, so I've created a life that feeds that. I'm happiest when no two days look the same. I love being in the creative process, whether I am designing a new line of clothes for my clothing line Grace & Game, overseeing branding for one of my companies or doing strategic planning. And I also really enjoy speaking and playing my part in educating and empowering other women entrepreneurs. If I can do any combination of the above and also get quality time with my daughter and a ride in at the barn, I'm in my sweet spot. DC: Describe your personal style in three words. JEM: I think my style is a mix of elegant, feminine with a bit of a sexy, powerful edge. STYLED RIGHT PAGE 12
Jessica Eaves MATHEWS DC : How has your sense of style impacted your confidence and success as a business woman? JEM: I've always had a passion for fashion and clothes, so it has always come naturally to me to try to look my best. I subscribe to the idea that you need to dress for the job you want, not the one you have. Personally, when I look my best, I feel more confident, which I think translates to performing better. I've always dressed for the top job because that was always where I wanted to end up. DC: What is Grace & Game? JEM: Grace & Game is a luxury American apparel brand for women inspired by country club living and designed for the sophisticated, feminine, modern woman. Our clothes combine affordable luxury and versatility, making them perfect for the active lifestyle, yet elegant and polished enough to wear from the boardroom to cocktails or dinner at a five-star restaurant. I created it to provide the modern woman with gorgeous, feminine golf clothes that shine under the demands of today’s hectic lifestyles. We understand that clothing is an expression of a modern woman’s personality and that, when she looks good, she feels more comfortable, capable and powerful. DC: What advice would you give to someone who wants to launch her own business? JEM: First, be smart about how you launch. Launching a business is stressful, requires long hours and wearing a lot of hats at the beginning. Roll up your sleeves and do the work. I promise it will be worth it. Find a great mentor who has experienced the kind of success you want. And finally, the best advice I would give another woman launching her own business: get very quiet and listen to your heart. Then, commit fully. For more information on Jessica, visit jessicaeavesmathews.com. For more information on Grace & Game, visit graceandgame.com.

Style 101 Which style is right for my hair type?
By Natalie Angelillo, co-owner of Swink Style Bar Have you ever gone to the salon with a photo of a beloved hairstyle and the highest expectations that you would look exactly like the girl in the magazine? And how often have you left feeling disappointed, because the style you received did not resemble the style you envisioned? At Swink Style Bar, we are experts at making everyone look great— but it’s important to ask your stylist for a hairstyle that is possible and flattering, considering your specific hair type. Here is a guide to help you find the perfect hairstyle. If you have SHORT HAIR- Chin
Lengt h or Shorter
FINE TEXTURE: If you’re worried you don’t have options, think again!
THICK AND CURLY: Short but thick and curly?
Adding curls to fine hair or straightening wavy hair can totally change the look. If you want some drama, add a fun headband. Chin length hair can be pulled back into a simple ponytail or bun. YOUR INSPIRATION: Michelle Williams, Kristin Cavallari
If you have MEDIUM HAIR- Should er
Lengt h
FINE TEXTURE: Medium length hair that is fine or wavy can be very versatile. You can wear it up, down or half up/halfdown. Add volume by product and some flat iron curls for a tousled loose look. If you want an up-do, the best style for this length is an un-constructed, messy-onpurpose bun. YOUR INSPIRATION: Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston
If you have LONG HAIR- Bel ow
You can go super sleek (and add a little length) by getting a professional flat iron style. If hair is at least chin length, you can pull it back into a simple chignon, or—if it’s super curly—add a braid across the top and secure with a pretty clip to lift hair off of your face. YOUR INSPIRATION: Carey Mulligan, Michelle Obama
THICK AND CURLY: The most dramatic transformation for curly hair is a sleek flatironed blow-out. The right products can soften and tame your curls (we recommend MoroccanOil deep conditioner). Extremely curly hair may frizz in the rain, so if the weather is wet, try putting your smoothed-out hair into a high bun. YOUR INSPIRATION: Kate Beckinsale, Eva Longoria
the Shoulders
FINE TEXTURE: If you have long all-onelength fine hair, your hair is perfect for intricate statement up-dos. buns or chignons. If you have layers and desire curly tousled hair, use a curling iron and hairspray. YOUR INSPIRATION: Carrie Underwood, Angelina Jolie
THICK AND CURLY: If hair is very long and very thick and/or curly, steer away from sleek chignons and smooth styles. Work with the curl—not against it! Side braids are also an excellent option (your curl will help the hold the braid in place). YOUR INSPIRATION: Taylor Swift, Beyonce Knowles

Tips for finding the perfect bathing suit By Sherri Garcia #1. Don’t go shopping late in the day or after a big meal. Instead, go first thing in the morning, when you’re feeling the most energetic and your body tends to be the least bloated. #2. Try on many different sizes. Bathing suits are sized very differently than street clothes. If you wear a size 10 normally, you may be a size 12 or 14 in swimwear. Don’t worry about the number! Just buy what fits. #3. Focus on the positives. Do you love your strong legs? Are you proud of your arms? Pick a suit that shows off your assets. No one is perfect; even the models I work with have some part of their body they feel selfconscious about. You’ll feel best in a suit that draws attention to your favorite features.

add one thing Great style doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes adding a single something can make a major statement. This month, we’re showing you how one pop of color can enliven an otherwise neutral outfit. Take inspiration from these looks and see what you can create in your own closet! By Darcy Camden
Wear to work
Above: Brighten up a black/white/grey work ensemble with a brightly colored belt (find a rainbow of colored belts under $20 at Target). We love a crisp white jacket over a black and white blouse with a grey slack borrowed from a suit. Snakeskin accessories add texture and interest to the look.
Above: There’s no simpler, more classic palette than a black pencil skirt and a white top. A chunky watch makes a big statement on a bare arm, and a blushcolored bag is a tough-yet-feminine carryall. The pop of color comes from the shoe. We love purple, but any color would work! (cont’d page 25) STYLED RIGHT PAGE 23
We love experimenting with nail color, and the Styled.Seattle office is usually littered with various shades of Julep polish, our favorite brand. The Julep Maven plan is a fantastic option for anyone similarly obsessed with do-it-yourself manicures and pedicures. Julep.com
add one thing Wear for fun
Above: Start with your favorite jeans. Add a fitted black t-shirt and a classic black heel. Your statement piece is a brightly-colored blazer (we love coral!). A natural woven clutch and silver necklace add texture without competing with the color of the jacket.
Above: An electric green tank is the star of this outfit. Pair a loose, long top with fitted black skinny jeans. We styled this combo with a nude flat, a beige jacket and a cognac clutch (all three are different colors of leather—don’t worry about matching!). This black and white scarf goes with everything. Ask a Stylist Question: “I am desperately trying to find a pair of jeans withOUT stretch. I know everyone loves stretch, but I want a pair that doesn’t get all stretched out every time I wear them. Does such a jean exist anymore?” Carol, Mill Creek Darcy’s Answer: Thanks for the question, Carol. It’s true that most jeans have a little bit of synthetic material that makes them stretchy. Spandex and Lycra are supposed to make jeans more comfortable, but too much stretch can make jeans lose their shape quickly. I have a few recommendations for you! Levi’s 515 Bootcut jeans ($55) are 99% cotton and only 1% elastane. Our clients have also had great luck with Paige Premium Denim’s “Hidden Hills” jeans ($189, Nordstrom); Paige jeans tend to hold their shape well for years. GAP’s 1969 Perfect Boot Jeans ($69.95) is a very similar style and fabric for half the price!
Question: “Can I wear nylons with dresses and skirts in the spring and summer? I hear they are out of style, but I want to have something on my legs, because they are not very pretty!” Megan, Bothell Sherri’s Answer: We understand! A lot of women have this issue. Even Kate Middleton has been spotted wearing nylons with many of her stylish dresses. Are nylons stylish? No. Can you wear them anyway? Yes. If wearing nylons makes you feel more confident and comfortable, then you should definitely wear them. I recommend Spanx “All The Way Sheer” pantyhose ($22). You should always wear the color most similar to your natural skin color (never try to fake a tan by wearing darker nylons!). Like make-up, the goal is to look like you’re not wearing them at all. If you want to brave a bare leg, I highly recommend MAC Skinsheen Leg Spray ($28), It’s a mousse-like foundation for your skin (works on arms, too!), and it will smooth out imperfections, and make your legs look beautiful without nylons. You can get it at the MAC store, Nordstrom and Macy’s,
