Welcome to the summer issue
Summer has finally arrived – a time for holidays, music festivals, daytrips and adventures! Earlier this year I had an adventure in South Korea’s capital city, Seoul. I discovered a vibrant cosmopolitan culture and burgeoning fashion scene – a far cry from the stark, political propaganda images of the north that frequent our TV screens. Highlighting the contrast between north and south, read about my tour of the Joint Security Area (p.59), then check out the street-style of Seoul’s famous Gangnam district (p.60). Back in the UK I was lucky enough to meet another travel enthusiast – fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. With designs that perfectly embody the spirit of adventure, Mary talks about how colour and culture inspire her in our feature interview (p.14). From sleek & chic whites to playful brights, our fashion editorials present you with an array of wearable styles, suitable for a ‘Manchester’ summer. But not forgetting those of you heading off to somewhere more tropical, we bring you our top ten swimwear picks (p.46-47).

In the winning shoot (p.41-45) photographer Emma Pilkington captured model Evie (pictured left), on location in Spinningfields. In the name of beauty, our MD Anna-Louise Gilhooley bravely volunteered to find out first-hand how cosmetic tattooing techniques have advance in recent years. Read about her experience on p.52. This issue is our most fashion packed yet, but we’ve not forgotten to mention the exciting Manchester International Festival taking place across the city this July (p.66). In addition to performing at 100 weddings per year, singer songwriter Jennie Sawdon is also busy running her record label ‘Little Me Records’ and taking care of her eight month old son Freddie. Jennie lives in South Manchester with husband, actor Chris Geere. His latest film, After Earth starring Will Smith, is in cinemas now.
Were you always destined for a career in music? Yes, both my parents are very musical and sing themselves. They were always encouraging and supported my ambition to earn a living through music. How does it feel to have won Wedding Singer of the Year from two different publications? Wonderful! Both were essentially awarded to me by my clients, as they voted for me, so it means when other couples approach me about singing for them, they can see I have plenty of satisfied customers! How would you describe your style? My job requires me to dress with a measure of understatement when taking the stage on someone else’s big day, so I opt for a classic look. Throughout University my style changed a lot, but now, in my thirties, I think I have found it! What are your favourite stores to shop at? I absolutely have to shop at Oasis, as my sister is a senior designer there, so I get to wear her designs at every wedding! Your debut album ‘Fighting the Fairytale’ is compiled of original songs, where does you writing inspiration come from? It sounds awful, but in sadness and melancholy. I usually wait until my husband is away and I’m missing him, so I can draw on those emotions to execute the right chords and words to illustrate my feelings. I do write happy songs too though!
How does it feel to see your album selling on iTunes? It’s a brilliant feeling knowing that your music can be accessed all over the world. With everything going digital, you don’t need a big record company to produce or sell your music anymore. You studied opera at RNCM, but your album has definite tones of jazz and soul, was this a natural transition for you? All my life I have listened to different genres of music - from folk to jazz, opera to soul and pop. I always perfomed my own music, despite being advised to stop any sort of ‘jazz’ singing. I always found the transition fairly easy and believe the more versatile you are, the better. What has been the proudest moment in your career? Releasing my album! After years of bad management deals and aborted record deals, I decided to do it on my own and set up my label ‘Little Me Records”. It was

the culmination of about 10 years of work so I breathed a huge sigh of relief when it was finally finished. Your husband Chris, is also in showbiz. How would you feel if your son Freddie followed in your footsteps? Terrified! We joke that with neither of us having a ‘proper job’ life can be stressful not knowing where the next mortgage payment is coming from. But we also have the excitement of things changing overnight for us and a wonderful quality of life too. Both of us are able to be around for Freddie a lot which is great. We would support him all the way, but no doubt we would worry for him as well! What do you do to relax? I am a gym bunny. I go at least 4 times a week. They have a crèche there so I get an hour to myself, and it means I can eat chocolate and drink wine, and let’s face it – that’s what we all want in the end.. Isn’t it!??

Velour was founded in 1997 when designer Per Andersson (pictured left) took over his grandmother’s clothes shop in Gothenberg and renamed it Nostalgi, offering clothes from different decades in an inspiring environment of art and design. Inspired by the store’s creative customers, Per Andersson launched collections for men and women under the brand Velour in 2005. As one of the top e commerce girls of the moment, with her face all over the likes of ASOS, online shoppers are guaranteed to recognize her. STYLEetc chat to one of Manchester’s most successful models, the totally gorgeous and down-to-earth, Kirstie Bennett. Interview by Siobhan Cooper
Where are you originally from? Unfortunately there’s nothing exotic about me, I’m a born and bred Mancunian.
I can appreciate a good fashion film but I can’t say I’m a fashion fiend, I love my comfort far too much.
How were you ‘discovered’? It was at a fashion show that I attended at Urbis during Manchester Fashion Week. I was approached by Debbie from Boss Model Management. At first she wasn’t too sure about my height, but gave me a card anyway. It wasn’t until a month later I went in to see them and luckily they gave me a chance.
What has been your most exciting job to date? I once worked on a Coca Cola commercial over in Budapest, that was really fun. We shot in some amazing locations, one night we were shooting at 3 am in a closed off fun fair, then the next day we were in a water park making the most of the slides.
Why do you think you have been so successful, especially in the e commerce world? This one’s a toughy because personally, I don’t have a clue. I think it may be because I have quite a girl-next-door look, an obtainable look that girls can relate to. Modelling can be pretty hard work, how do you keep your energy levels up? I make sure I have a good hearty breakfast and lunch, nothing too heavy but something with a good source of protein and foods that release energy slowly. In order to keep my energy levels up I’ll snack on nuts and fruit and, of course, a few good strong cups of tea always help keep me going. What would be on your ultimate studio playlist? It’d be quite an eclectic mix, anything from The Strokes to Bondax, The Temptations to N.E.R.D. As long as it’s upbeat, especially during the last few shots. You work in fashion but do you love fashion? I love catching up on the latest collections from fashion week and

Do people recognize you on the street? I only got recognized for the first time last week, in a bar. But no, not usually. I look very different in normal day life, much scruffier and un-kempt. If you weren’t a model, what do you think you’d be doing for a living? I always think about this myself. If I didn’t model I would either be travelling, working on boats, a diving instructor or a journalist. What did you want to be when you were 5? I was pretty set on being a lawyer at a young age, all due to my mum being an Ally McBeal fan! And finally, - what’s your beauty secret? I really rely on the basics, lots of water, lots of sleep and a good moisturiser. Also, it sounds cheesy but I do believe you look your best when you’re happy, therefore I try to keep my spirits up and get those endorphins going. The gym, bananas and chocolate all help!

Feature Interview
The Magical Mind of Mary Fashion designer Mary Katrantzou recently visited Manchester, to talk about her SS13 collection in front of some specially selected guests at Selfridges Exchange Square. Gemma Latham sat down with Mary ahead of the presentation, eager to hear first-hand from the storyteller of an extraordinary fashion fairytale...
..It started with jewellery, magnified gemstones and gold chains; then perfume bottles with their cut glass shapes and jewelled shades. Next, adorned in ruffles and sashes, Mary led us through the looking glass to a world of palaces, boudoirs and verandas. Chiffon and chandeliers beckoned to balcony views of swimming pools and flower fields. From Elizabethan England to the 1920’s French Riviera, onto the orient and across oceans to the tropics, like birds of paradise flitting through a dreamscape of dizzy wonderment.
I get very analytical when we decide on the topic of the season. Apart from the obvious thing that is print, a lot of my work is looking at imagery. I start with research and because it’s so thematic and there is no end, I know everything about the postage stamps and bank notes by the end of the season. I like that because designers have an inquisitive nature, so you feel really fulfilled at the end of the season.
Through her innovative talent for “filtering the beauty in design”, Mary Katrantzou has taken us on a kaleidoscopic journey since she burst onto the fashion scene in 2008. Taking inspiration from iconic imagery, historic and cultural references are transformed into prints, woven into a tapestry and wrapped around the female form in a prizm of colours and silhouettes that flow from her ingenious imagination.
When I travel I take thousands and thousands of images, I am obsessive with it! It’s because of the way I work - that found imagery becomes a collage, then becomes part of the body, then I paint over it and start to see patterns in certain things. I use instagram so much! When you are travelling it’s a perfect way of capturing the things you see.
“I thought it would be interesting to tell the story of the world, but I didn’t know how. Then I thought. . STAMPS! It’s such a good way to show different cultural references. I love travelling with the stamp collection because people pick out different things. They relate to some of the colours, or the political figures, or the flowers. I mean they are so recognizable sometimes of certain countries, so I thought about what else does the same thing, and I thought MONEY! Again, you know, you never look at it for its designs, but some of the motifs are beautiful.
My print is not a kind of signature font, it’s a thematic print I build each season. It’s important for me to take it a step at a time and place the right print in the right medium. That’s the power with print, you can apply it! I wear a lot of black. Print and colour exist so avidly in my imagination that I feel the need to detach myself from my work. I want to be creative and use my colour sensibility in my work and sometimes that means cleansing my palette. Black is a uniform for me and my escape is my work. I love Azzedine Alaïa. He knows to design for a woman’s body and I always feel very feminine wearing his dresses.
There is something nice about collecting. I think I was one of the last generations to collect stamps. There is something beautiful in the way the stamps and old bank notes have a value, but now it’s only in collector’s albums. It’s very interesting to use as my inspiration because it allows me to put more of my own signature into the work, and show what’s modern about the designs and how people can wear them.

Feature Interview Seeing how other people style and experiment with my designs excites me. I love the way fashion icons Anna Dello Ruso, Miroslava Duma, Rhianna and Sarah Jessica Parker have worn my clothes. They are all very different women who all are adventurous with fashion and have great style but in equally different ways. I don’t have a style icon as such, but in my mind I design for a woman who is appreciative of design and art, as well as fashion. She makes a statement with her clothes and channels her personality through them.
work. It’s great when I get a day to myself here and there while I am away to soak up some of the city or place I am in. I will definitely go back to Greece for a few days to see my friends and family this summer. “ We were also treated to a sneak peak of the AW13 collection, which sees a darker colour palette come into play as Mary bridges the gap between urban architecture and nature in her imagery. A magical element prevails with the hours from dusk til dawn depicted across a spectrum of landscapes. With this collection we journey through moonlit-bathed city streets, cross a waterfall backdrop bridge, and follow winding roads through autumnal forest scenes leading to snowcapped mountains.
With the Longchamp collaboration I wanted to test the market and see how people would react to us doing accessories. It was a small capsule collection and it went incredibly well. I see the bags in unexpected places. I went to the airport and saw somebody carrying one; our sales manager saw one in the park. It’s nice to see, a great feeling of appreciation and acknowledgement, but I am too shy and embarrassed to go and tell them!
Through her designs Mary is creating the ultimate, never-ending fairy tale. Each piece paints a fantastical scene, which we are invited to (literally) step into, becoming our own leading-lady. The details of each adventure are ours to fill in...
I am looking to build a team to focus on accessories, for now we are taking baby steps. We have started doing little leather printed pouches in our stamp collection. For somebody who doesn’t want to commit to a fully printed dress it’s nice to just have something small and easy, like a laptop case or coin pouch. We do them in all different sizes and for me, because I mostly wear black, that bit of colour is something fun!!

I would love to tap into interiors as it’s something I studied and I enjoy doing. But I wouldn’t want to do it for just the sake of it. I wouldn’t want to just do a cushion, or some textiles… I would like to have the time and the team behind me to be able to take on projects collaborating on something bespoke to dress up the environment, I love doing that! It needs to be an aesthetic within which I feel comfortable creating something really special. We have been approached by hotels before which is very flattering, but I would want the right time to create certain things and do the best job. We have grown so fast and I like the team to take their time on some things. I couldn’t have got to where I am now without the support of the NewGen Scheme. It gave me the platform to showcase my work to buyers and press and allowed me to show at London Fashion Week, which is invaluable. When I received NewGen support, I realised how serious I was about making my brand a success and it gave me the confidence to pursue it. I was still fighting off seams, at that point, so I’ve come a long way. I was recently over in Brazil, which was amazing and really inspiring. It is very rare that I get to go on holiday, but I am lucky that I get to travel a lot with my Mary Katrantzou AW13

Shooting a summertime story in England is never the easiest of tasks, but thanks to the quaint seaside location of Lytham, a selection of bright and beautiful garments from the likes of Harvey Nichols, Hervia Bazaar and Glamorous, and some clever lighting trickery from photographer Layla Sailor we overcame the typically british weather conditions of the day to bring you our Seaside Daze spread!
Model Kaitlin was an absolute trooper, battling against the chilly drizzle to convince us all she was having a carefree day out at the seaside!
Helping out on the day, operating lights and cameras, were Layla’s amazing assistants - Tara Nicole Mckenzie and Connie July, both currently studying Fashion Promotion and Styling at UCLAN. Layla competing with Kaitlin for the cover shot! Accessories were key to the look of the shoot, bringing a playful edge and a summer vibe. Hervia Bazaar is arguably one of Manchester’s best kept fashion secrets, due to a combination of its discreet location, niche clientele and cutting edge contemporary collections.
Hervia BAZAAR
Tucked away in Spring Gardens (just off King Street), Hervia is frequented by Manchester’s most fashion savvy crowd and those seeking cutting edge, fresh designer brands. Hervia has an interesting background. Opened originally in 1993 in Manchester’s Royal Exchange Square, it was quickly named by Vogue as one of the UK’s finest designer boutiques, and was a fashion hotspot in the city. Tragically, the original store was destroyed by the IRA bombing in 1996. Undaunted, owner Oscar Pinto re-launched the store in its current location in 2010, with a vision to fill the gap of what had been missing in the northwest – a concept boutique supporting emerging British talent and stocking brands largely unavailable outside of the capital city. Walking through the door of the store is like walking into a five star hotel. What strikes you first is the central glass cabinet structure, which owner Oscar told us is an original piece from the Dorchester in London. Mirrored ceilings reflect muted and subtle light from grand chandeliers, and the central tiered fragrance stand oozes charm. Boasting a strong collection of menswear and womenswear, Oscar’s vision for the store is ‘timeless clothing’. He explained that this need not mean that the pieces are plain classics - they can be quirky and still stand the test of time. This season the store presents collections from Junya Watanabe, Comme des Garçons and Viktor and Rolf, all brands that echo this sensibility of timeless statement dressing. The store works closely with the British Fashion Council in order to help promote up and coming UK talent, such as Christopher Raeburn, Holly Fulton and Hannah Martin and has many collections from such designers that are exclusive to the north. The Hervia store enables designers to display their collections in a concept space without compromising their vision, allowing customers to purchase garments and accessories that embody the original excitement, innovation and dynamism of the person who created them. For the aesthetically aware, this store is a must visit.

EYEBROW ENHANCEMENT by Anna- Louise Gilhooley
Now, my problem is that I was a plucky teenager! Fashion trends, mono-brow phobia, and a teenage tweezerfest can leave so many women with a few lonely hairs where their eyebrows used to be. As one of those unfortunate overpluckers, I was excited to meet Jo who has over sixteen years experience in the beauty industry and was trained by industry specialist Karen Betts. Jo begins by talking me through the different eyebrow shapes suitable for my face shape, and drawing on temporary eyebrows so I can get an idea of how the semi-permanent make-up will look. Preparation is the key. Jo told me: “It takes time to agree the shape and consult with each client. Re-positioning of brows can give a dramatic, instant eye-lift effect.”

You may be surprised to hear that cosmetic tattoos (or semipermanent make-up as it is now better known) first became popular in the 1930s, with beauticians using vegetable dyes to add colour to the top layers of skin. As you would expect, the techniques and formulas used have advanced greatly since then. STYLEetc MD Anna-Louise Gilhooley recently paid a visit to beautician Jo Briggs, at her BeautyFX salon in the leafy suburb of Wilmslow, to find out firsthand just how effective the results can be.
Once we’ve agreed on a shape, Jo begins the procedure. It is surprisingly painless, no worse than having my eyebrows plucked or threaded. Using the Nouveau Contour Machine to deposit tiny hypo-allergenic implants of pigment into the dermal layer of the skin, Jo methodically and perfectly applies tiny individual hair strokes. Different shades of pigment are used to create a 3D effect. Jo repeatedly goes over the brow until she reaches the right density. Colours are mixed to each individual’s needs, to complement their skin tone and hair colour. The textured hair stroke technique results in an unbelievably natural I was amazed by how realistic the results were. These before and after pictures show the difference in definition Jo gave me. My new brows look so natural that although I can’t help shouting about them, if I didn’t I guarantee noone would batt an eyelid (or raise an eyebrow)!

Seoul Spirit by Gemma Latham
My trip to Seoul coincided with the recent flare in tensions between north and south, following on from North Korea’s condemned nuclear missile tests. A few worried emails from friends had me checking the British Embassy website for updates in the hours leading up to my flight, but there were no warnings against travel so I boarded the plane and proceeded to enjoy some in-flight movies, quietly hoping we wouldn’t touch down in a warzone!
The first stop was Gyeongbokgung Palace, a vast and beautiful site shouldered by skyscrapers to the south and Mount Bugaksan to the north. Built by the Joseon Dynasty in the 1300’s, the site served as the main palace for over five hundred years and is a must-see for anyone interested in the more traditional and historic aspects of South Korea.
On arrival, I was reassured by the cheery face of Sun-Jung from the Korean Tourism Organization, whose only concern was to enthusiastically educate me about Seoul, the world’s third largest megacity. The luxurious 5* JW Marriott Hotel, is a city unto itself. A 34 floor tower containing 500 bedrooms, 5 restaurants, 3 bars, a fitness suite complete with an olympic sized swimming pool, indoor running track and climbing wall, and a spa, all housed above a palatial lobby lounge. Did I mention the underground shopping mall?! The renowned Marquis Thermal Spa beckoned, but determined to see what Seoul had to offer, I set out to explore.

In the afternoon I went on a tour of Panmunjeom, home to the JSA (Joint Security Area), which straddles North and South Korea. With tensions between the two making headlines back home, I have to admit I hesitated before signing a compulsory disclaimer which included the line “entry into a hostile area and possibility of injury or death as a direct result of enemy action.” Our tour guide didn’t seem fazed though: “Let’s go see some North Korean Guys!” she joked. At this historic site, where over the past sixty years leaders from both sides have met to negotiate, two imposing buildings face each other in a permanent stand off. We cautiously descended the steps leading down from Freedom House to the MAC Conference Room with strict instructions not to make eye contact or any easily misconstrued gestures, under the scrutiny of the binocular wielding North Korean guards.

The conference room sits squarely on the Military Demarcation Line meaning that, technically, once inside you are able to stand on North Korean soil. However the door to the North remains locked and guarded at all times by a ROK soldier, who was a master at remaining staunch whilst having his photo taken. Back in the city, the surreal experience of my Panmunjeom visit felt like another world. Seoul seems to exist in a protective bubble, unfazed by the recent developments causing the rest of the world to worry. “Oh it’s just Kim Jong-un posturing. He does this at least once a year.” a member of the hotel concierge told me. Seoul is vibrant, packed with people busy working, socialising and relaxing. “We believe shopping is good for stress”, Sun-Jung told me. Of course! I couldn’t visit Seoul without doing some style scouting in the famous Gangnam district. Following a peaceful breakfast admiring the city view from the JW Marriott Executive Lounge, the next day I hooked up with streetstyle bloggers Sol-Sol who took me to Garosugil. This pretty street inspired Psy’s viral pop song , which put Gangnam on the world map and is where all the style-conscious Koreans go to see and be seen.
Elegant, ginko tree lined streets make for a pleasant day out, with an abundance of fashion boutiques and art galleries to explore as well as plenty of cafes (serving some very good coffee and cake) to take a perch and people watch for a while. Three days after I returned home, North Korea cut the hotline and cancelled the armistice agreement, putting the country technically back at war. Words and images by Alaka Prodhan On a lazy, sunny afternoon, there are few places more pleasant to wile away the hours than West Didsbury’s Burton Road. Of the many independents vying for one’s attention, Moth’s simple, pared down exterior quietly exudes confidence and class. Inside, this aura of understated elegance is carefully maintained. The first thing you notice is the smell. The fragrance is clean and crisp. In the corner, a single candle burns: geranium. The effect is immediate – you cannot help but feel calm, serene. 62
Home The second thing you notice is the variety. Furnishings and fittings share space with glassware, crockery, stationery, and a niche range of fashion accessories.
Along the walls, handbags made from Italian leather hang side by side with delicate fairy lights, whose tiny, Moroccan-style lamps throw intricate shadows on to the wall. In the centre, a selection of light fittings, slate-grey and Scandinavian, preside over a table filled with a cornucopia of homeware – ceramics, tea lights, salad servers fashioned from mango wood. Everything is modest yet luxurious, in a pleasing palate of grey and midnight blue, white and tan, with the odd splash of colour: a blue topaz ring; a trio of amber glass vases; a jade green handbag. Aside from being visually pleasing, there is also an enticing array of different textures. My fingers itched to touch the thick woollen throws scattered about, which contrasted with the crisscross of stacked wicker baskets and the cool, metallic curve of table lamps.
Moth quietly exudes confidence and class... you cannot help but feel calm.
I found myself resembling the creature which lends Moth its name: flitting and flying between each precious item, hypnotically drawn to their beauty as to a flame. Moth is, in short, a perfect representation of what Burton Road has to offer. Its look and feel is unique, and the standard and quality is high.

Living up to its namesake, Levenshulme’s Trove is something of a hidden treasure. From the outside, it gives little away. There is no name, no brass plaque or neon sign – nothing showy, nothing flash; but inside is a small café big on fresh flavours and mouth-watering artisanal artistry.
Eggs Benedict on sourdough with capers
It’s a Sunday afternoon, and sadly I’ve arrived a little too late to pick up one of the special loaves of bread, which are handmade on the premises each weekend. They’ve all been snapped up – this week it was a three-seed sourdough; last week, the equally popular garlic and chilli. But I’m in luck, as the freshly made bread is also used in the small but wellconsidered menu of sandwiches, salads and brunch specials. Spring greens with poached egg and mustard
I opt for a trio of Trove delights - the eggs Benedict on toasted sourdough with capers and caraway hollandaise; spring greens with poached egg and mustard dressing; and the smoked mackerel sandwich with wasabi mayo and watercress. The eggs Benedict is a revelation: the sprinkling of capers is an inspired addition to the usual bacon, poached egg combo, whilst the caraway hollandaise beautifully coats the toasted sourdough, which defies my pitiful knife-cutting skills with its satisfying tear and crunch. It’s a welcome rustic alternative to a soft, pliant muffin. Every mouthful bursts with flavour.

Trove is an instantly warm and welcoming place: a little snug, but clearly popular with the locals – some engaged in animated conversations over a steaming cappuccino and a slice of cake, others quietly poring over the latest broadsheet or bestseller.
The bowl of spring greens arrives next, the poached egg sitting on a bed of shining, sautéed veg, which is dusted with a smattering of sesame seeds. It tastes as wholesome and fresh as it looks: simple, healthy and delicious. Lastly, I tuck into the smoked mackerel sandwich, which is served on a hefty doorstop wedge of, again, freshly made bread. Similar to the eggs Benedict, it’s a simple, winning combination of bold flavours and textures.
The café started out small and simple, selling just soup and coffee, but gradually the couple have added more and more to the menu, becoming recognised good food heroes in the process. Trove is now an established part of the local community – active participants in the Levenshulme food and drink festival and educators in the making and baking of bread. But first and foremost, it lives up to its own, simple promise: real bread, a good brew and a place to eat and meet.
This is not food-to-go, carelessly thrown together and vacuum-packed en masse. It is careful, considered, made with love. I find it no surprise, then, to spot a single photo film strip of the cafe’s owners, Katy and Marcus, smiling and cuddling their sevenmonth-old baby, sharing shelf space with a Manchester Food and Drink Festival award for “Truly Good Food”. Trove grew from a shared love of food and organic produce, free from additives or preservatives. Katy and Marcus first started selling their own conserves at local markets, using jars which they had collected from bars and cafés around the city. Then, one day, they met a woman whose mother was selling the lease on her café in Levenshulme; they went to take a look, and the rest is history.

A biennial event, MIF returns to Manchester this July, with a heady mix of music, performance and visual arts. A major event on the international culture calendar.
Manchester International Festival launched in 2007, with the fantastic concept of all pieces showcased being uniquely commissioned for premiere at the festival. MIF now attracts over 20,000 locals and tourists alike, for eighteen days of premieres and special events. Albert Square with its iconic white pavilion serves as the festival hub, but the packed programme will take place across the city, utilising many wonderful and unusual performance spaces. A highlight this year is theatre piece The Masque of Anarchy, starring actress Maxine Peake who will recite Percy Bysshe Shelley’s epic 91-verse political poem of the same name, about the Peterloo Massacre that took place in Manchester in 1819. The production with be staged in the Grade II listed Albert Hall, offering festival goers an unmissable opportunity to see parts

of this historic venue that have been closed and hidden since 1969. It opens briefly for MIF13, before closing for refurbishment as a new music and events venue. The Old Woman at The Palace Theatre sees the return of innovative theatre director Robert Wilson. During MIF11, Wilson directed The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic at the Lowry, where visitors were greeted by live Doberman dogs prowling the stage and a lighting design that was a work of art in itself. Manchester Art Gallery host do it 2013, a 20th Anniversary edition of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s do it series, which sees artists reinterpret the directions of others. Those involved include Yoko Ono, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Ai Weiwei and Gilbert and George.
The more adventurous MIF visitor should venture to Mayfield Depot - a disused railway station left to decay in recent decades. Whether it is an audio-visual feast with Massive Attack vs Adam Curtis, the immersive work of artist Tino Sehgal or bubbles and foam in Mette Ingvartsen’s Evaporated Landscapes, this venue is sure to disrupt sensory perceptions. SAILOR / STANNARD ART EXHIBITION Photographer-videographer Layla Sailor and illustrator, print and fashion designer Lisa Stannard presented a retrospective of their work at 2022 in the Northern Quarter to a delighted crowd of Manchester creatives. The talented duo have collaborated on many projects since they met as students in Manchester. Together, they create “playful, creative and colourful works with elements of traditional decorative arts, street style and religious iconography.”
Images were displayed around the venue, with videos projected onto the walls. Guests were treated to Russian sweets and cocktails whilst live Kokoshnik dolls and pastel ‘Milky Girls’ brought the artwork to life. Music from the Wet Play DJ’s enhanced the funky trippy vibe.

WAKE-UP! I’ve never been a morning person, maybe that’s why a career in theatre was so alluring! My alarm goes off at 7am and I stagger out of bed. I’m training for a triathlon at the moment, so most days start with a banana and a session in the gym or pool. MORNING I get to the MIF office at 9am most days, desperate for coffee and like everyone I begin by wading through stacks of email. Today’s diary also holds some interesting meetings. The first is with the BBC Asian Network to talk about the visit of the astonishing Sufi Singer Abida Parveen who is playing the Bridgewater Hall on July 6th. It’s a real coup for Manchester and the only UK performance from this amazing artist. I run from this meeting to one with Dave Haslam (Hacienda DJ legend) to talk through the DJ’s he has programmed for our Festival Square site. This year he has come up with a range of local and national talent from Dialog to the brilliantly named ‘Disco Mums’. LUNCH-TIME
Is normally a sandwich at my desk, but today is lunch with Festival Director, Alex Poots, to catch up on all of the projects we are undertaking.
This year the Festival is presenting 20 world premieres and more than 30 events in total, so it’s difficult to stay on top of it! AFTERNOON Back to the growing piles of emails and a discussion with our Press Department about a Culture Show special on Masque of Anarchy. Actress Maxine Peake and Royal Exchange Theatre Director Sarah Frankcom have spent an afternoon rehearsing the piece with a film crew in tow and it’s been a really successful session.

Paul Clay is Executive Producer of Manchester International Festival – a biennial festival of new music, visual and performing arts. Paul has recently worked as a consultant for Manchester City Council as interim manager of the Library Theatre in preparation for its merger with Cornerhouse, and as an advisor to the Home project, Manchester’s £25 million new space for Contemporary Arts, Theatre and Film at First Street.

AFTER-HOURS The international nature of our work means that things don’t always happen in normal office hours. 7.30pm brings a conference call with the design team for the XX, they are LA based which means all of our conversations happen in our early evening and their early morning. The design is coming on very well, it’s going to be a truly amazing event for those lucky enough to have got a ticket. I relax in the bath with a large glass of wine before getting to bed around midnight. A final check of emails brings an invite to take Life and Death of Marina Abramovic which premiered at MIF 2011 to Chile in 2014, which might fit well after it’s journey to Toronto and NY later this year. It’s great to see works commissioned by the festival continue to reach new international audiences!
