Welcome to the autumn issue

We’re always pretty fashion-biased here at STYLEetc, but we’ve gone especially fashion crazy this issue, and quite rightly so! Autumn is the new year in the sartorial world, with fashion houses around the globe presenting their designs for SS14. I visited Copenhagen Fashion Week to see what our Scandi cousins say we’ll be wearing come the springtime (p.13), whilst Pearl Westwood kept an eye on the London catwalks (p.15). But back to now! On our shopping pages we bring you all the new AW13 trends from slipper shoes, leopard print and tartan for the girls; to texture, prints and man bags for the boys. And our fashion editorials Anthousai Nymph (p.24) and The Artist (p.38) see the new season looks brought to life.

For our feature interview we were lucky enough to speak to British Vogue fashion editor Francesca Burns (pictured right), before she jetted out to the New York fashion shows (p.16) and Harvey Nichols fashion director, Paula Reed, is this issue’s Stylish Guest (p.9). Our autumn culture pages review the delightful Dior retrospective currently exhibiting at the Gallery of Costume (p.64). If you are yet to discover this fashion treasure trove, then pop it on your rainy day list. Previously the style director of Grazia magazine, Paula Reed joined Harvey Nichols as fashion director a year ago. Her in-depth knowledge of the fashion industry made her the perfect choice to ensure Britain’s most luxurious department store remains at the forefront of current and fresh fashion trends. Paula lives in Notting Hill with her three teenage children and travels extensively to meet with designers, attend the global runway shows and stay clued-up on how the catwalk trends are being translated on the streets.

What made you want to work in fashion? I grew up in Ireland, in the middle of nowhere, and the only options were the civil service or the bank. I could see myself having more options in fashion, so the choice was kind of a career device. I wanted to be a designer, but I knew I couldn’t draw. English was my strongest subject so I decided to get a job at a newspaper because I wanted to write reports on the fashion industry. How did you break into the industry? I thought the best way to get to know people would be to work in PR, so I knocked on the door of Lynne Franks. She was the inspiration behind the Edina character in Absolutely Fabulous and massive in the 80s and 90s in London. I caught her at the right moment as she’d just taken on an Irish client, and knew nothing about the market there. Within a couple of weeks I was working on London Fashion Week, and it was fantastic! What does your role at Harvey Nichols entail? Identifying new talent, identifying commercial winners, and curating the mix on the floor every season so it looks exciting. And also to ensure we’re always introducing new brands and supporting businesses we really believe in. What’s your favourite part of your job? Engaging with designers. Hearing what they’ve got to say really inspires me.

How much time per year do you spend working abroad? I don’t count it because I think I might scare myself! I would say it’s approaching about fifty percent of the time though. My kids never see me anymore! What is your favourite country to visit? That’s hard because they all have something different! I love travelling, and being out seeing new things. There’s something about New York which is fabulous. I lived there for a year and I loved looking at how people wear clothes there, the way they put their looks together. Are you a city girl then? Yes, well… I spend my holidays in North Yorkshire, so I’m not sure! How do you relax? I’ve got a Jack Russell whom I adore. I walk him in the countryside and in Hyde Park. I also do Pilates.

Biggest ever fashion splurge? I spent my first month’s salary from The Sunday Times on an orange cashmere Alaïa suit. It sounds disgusting, but actually it was fabulous! Your wardrobe must be bursting?! No, I’m very good at editing and chucking out! But there are some things like my Alaïa, Valentino and Chanel pieces that I will never get rid of. What’s your most treasured possession? Apart from my kids and dog… it would by my Hermès Kelly bag. What are the three main items on your A/W wish list? A mannish suit from Dries Van Noten, a Paula Gerbase biker jacket and I’m trying to decide between the Yves Saint Laurent or the Woolrich parka.

Fashion’s Night Out in Manchester !

With so much fashion excitement planned for one evening, shoppers are going to need to be clued-up and savvy about how they spend their time. To help you decide where to head, we’ve put together a mini guide of what’s tipped to be on offer in each area of the city. . . On Thursday 10th October, Vogue will bring their global initiative Fashion’s Night Out to Manchester for an evening of exciting fashion events and shopping galore! The annual event was launched in NYC in 2009, with retailers and designers enticing fashionistas into stores with limited edition goods, celebrity appearances, special offers and goodie bags available for one night only! Vogue Fashion’s Night Out now takes place in over 25 cities around the world, and this will be the first time the UK event has been hosted outside the capital.

Both are sure to pull out all the stops and offer some of the most exciting in-store experiences of the night. Harvey Nichols will be throwing a big party to celebrate their 10th birthday. We’re expecting cake to be high on the agenda in addition to exciting designer apprearances, customisations and some extra-special surprises! Selfridges will have a van on the square with a surprise celeb selling the official FNO t-shirts. There will be pop-up food carts on each floor and mysteryamount gift card give-aways of £1-£500. Where are you originally from? Wythenshaw, Manchester How were you ‘discovered’? I was discovered at home in Manchester when a friend suggested I go to see Boss Model Management. At the time I was working as a boxer and personal trainer. I didn’t expect anything to come of it, but they signed me!

What has been the highlight of your modelling career so far? Meeting so many people and travelling all over the world. My eyes have been opened to just how big the world outside of Manchester is. What country do you enjoy working in the most? I’ve been spending a lot of time working in New York. I love the place, and my English accent goes down well there haha! What do you miss when you’re working away? My mum most of all…. my family and my girlfriend. And Manchester!

What was your first modelling job? I got lucky because pretty much my first real modelling job was the Versace SS13 Campaign alongside Kate Moss and Joan Smalls.

How do you keep in shape? I don’t really know! I did join a gym but I never have time to go so I just eat well and try not to drink too many beers. I always fail on the beer bit though! If you weren’t a model, what would you be doing? Searching for another way to be able to retire by 30.

Fashion blogger Pearl stays ahead of the trends, reporting on the London Fashion Week SS14 shows…

This

was probably the wettest London Fashion Week we have ever experienced, however designers such as Eudon Choi and Felder Felder created wet-look hair on the runways to make us feel chic rather than washed out. In fact, the weather seemed quite fitting as there was a real mermaid feel to many of the make-up looks. A heads up ladies – shimmery highlighter will be your must have beauty item for SS14! The fairytale, dream-like feel was seen across the board, with the key trend being romantic, in a Mary Poppins kind of way. Think sweet shop colours: Parma Violets, Sherbet Lemons, monochrome striped Humbugs and a pop of pink Blackpool Rock seen at Burberry, Bora Aksu and many more. Pink is the must-have colour for A/W and this trend will be carried over into spring, so invest now.

Look out for abstract floral and petal prints à la Mulberry, Vivienne Westwood Red Label and Christopher Kane. Biker jackets in pale patterns and cut-off sleeves seen at Eudon Choi and Kilian Kerner make the perfect everyday statement items. Dress up your look with a bejewelled earcuff. Emblazoning things with slogans is another trend here to stay, with Ashish celebrating his love of Coca Cola, Sister by Sibling proclaiming ‘Happy’ and ‘Lead Sister’, and Sophia Webster using her characteristic speech bubbles on shoes and bags. We adore her ‘Here comes the hot stepper’ heels. If there is one thing next season will be it’s fun – innocent, romantic, beautiful and happy fun!

Francesca Burns Fashion Aficionado by Gemma Latham

Two years ago, at the age of 31, Francesca Burns landed the dream job of fashion editor at British Vogue. It may seem a young age for such an influential position, but Burns was destined for a career in fashion, even if she herself didn’t realise it at first. Growing up in the southern suburb of Guildford where “literally nothing ever happened,” leafing through her mum’s copies of Vogue was “a transportation to another world” for the teenager. “I became obsessed with supermodels. I was just fascinated by these beautiful, exceptional creatures,” she recollects. As she got older, Burns began to read magazines such as The Face and i-D – where she would later make a name for herself in her first fashion editor role – and she continued to be enthralled by “this exciting world of vibrant culture, energy and beauty.” But enrolled at a small convent school, a career in fashion wasn’t on her radar. “That information just wasn’t available to me. I didn’t understand that you could be in fashion if you weren’t a designer or a writer.” A month into a Business and Law degree, Burns was miserable and dissatisfied. It was a perceptive university lecturer who put her on course. “He called me into his office – I was wearing a Vivienne Westwood mini-kilt and these buffalo platform boots whilst everyone else looked like future lawyers. He just asked me what I was doing there. I was crying and said ‘I don’t know!’” He suggested she transfer to London College of Fashion. “I owe him a lot,” she acknowledges.

The experience was a career fast track. Burns ended up leaving college and accompanied Baker for two years during Kylie’s Fever world tour. During this time she assisted on fashion editorial shoots for magazines such as POP, Numero and Italian Vogue, and met “so many amazing designers.” After freelancing “ I became for a couple of years, Burns brought her experience to style and culture mag i-D, obsessed with becoming fashion editor. She joined publishing powerhouse Condé Nast in supermodels. 2009, as senior fashion editor-at-large of the new-launch LOVE magazine, before I was just moving into her current position at Vogue.

I meet Burns at the London Vogue offices, on a rainy Friday afternoon. Her hair a Debbie Harry-esque platinum bob, she is dressed in a double denim ensemble that pairs a camouflage print skirt by the “amazingly talented” up and coming design duo Marques’ Almeida, with a denim jumper and metallic silver platform shoes by one of her favourite designers: Prada. Burns looks cool, quirky, laidback. Knowing she’s off to New York in a few days to begin the month-long whirlwind of fashion shows, I promise not to take up too much time, but she came in early that day “to get everything done so we won’t have to rush.” Friendly and softly spoken, Burns’ down-to-earth demeanour is not what anyone who has seen The Devil Wears Prada would associate with Vogue, and I immediately warm to her.

Less than a year after transferring to LCF, things started to fall into place. “We had to do a work placement and I literally stalked Kylie Minogue’s creative director, William Baker, for months and months.” Eventually, Baker invited the persistent Burns on a two-week placement. Her first day was on the set of the Can’t Get You Out Of My Head music video. “I couldn’t believe I was there, I was totally in at the deep end! Kylie was wearing a Tom Ford Gucci dress, my mind was blown!! I literally did anything they asked me to – ran around, put shoes on, made cups of tea, ironed things!”

Hair & make-up artist Nita always brightens up a shoot with her cheery disposition! Seen here fixing Coral’s hair. It’s always a worry shooting outdoors in England. I develop an obsessive compulsion for checking the met weather app in the days leading up to a shoot, but on this occasion we were lucky. After a misty drizzle in the morning, there were clear skies over our beautiful location in the grounds of Bramall Hall, near Stockport. We gathered at photographer Sven’s house at 7am for coffee and hot porridge. Hair & make-up artist, Nita, prepped model Coral whilst I steamed the clothes and packed up some shoot essentials such as clips, grips, baby wipes and energy snacks. So much preparation goes into a fashion editorial: coming up with a concept, making mood boards, doing a location scout and collecting all the clothes is days (sometimes weeks) of work in itself, so by the day of the shoot everyone involved is excited to see all the elements finally come together. Sven had done a location reccy and taken snapshots of the different backgrounds he wanted to use, so I was able to plan in advance which outfits to shoot in each setting. This helped the day to run smoothly and we were able to shoot nine different ensembles. After a long 12 hour day we called it a wrap and just made it back to the cars before the heavens opened! I breathed a sigh of relief that all the clothes were safe and dry, then everyone headed home for some well-earned take-away and chill time.

Owner John Rogers was inspired to start up the business out of his love of horse-riding and the great outdoors. There is an emphasis on British heritage: beautiful silk pocket squares made in Macclesfield; luxuriously soft cashmere sweaters spun in England and hand-frame knitted in Wales; canvas cooler bags lined with Cumbrian Herdwyck wool. Some French, Scandinavian and German brands feature, but first and foremost, many of the materials here are locally sourced, born from the very landscapes in which they are meant to be used. Lissom & Muster predominantly caters to anyone who is passionate about the outdoors, especially those who appreciate timeless, traditional pursuits – equestrians, anglers, hunters and hikers. As many items are commissioned specially, it is also the perfect place to pick up a special gift for the discerning gentleman or woman. The silk pocket squares, for example, can be embossed with a name or initials, while the woollen sweaters can be made bespoke in other sizes and shades. After a rather hectic morning of meetings, our Editor, Gemma, and I were glad to settle down in the beautiful surroundings of Jo Malone’s generous corner of Harvey Nichols Manchester. We received a warm welcome from ‘Scent Stylist’ Jessica, who was ready and waiting to guide us through a bespoke Fragrance Combining experience. After a lot of experimenting, and the hard decision of narrowing down to just two scents from the beautiful collection, we chose a fascinating combination of Blue Agava & Cacao layered with Nectarine Blossom & Honey which gave off raw undertones of cacao and acacia honey softened by the succulent notes of nectarine, peach and cassis.

Then came the relaxing part: we were invited to lay our hands on plush white towels and Jessica cleansed our skin with the Nectarine Blossom & Honey Body & Hand Wash, which she first whipped up to a creamy froth using a mini whisk, to add to the indulgence of the experience! Next, Jessica used a hot towel to open our pores before applying the rich Blue Agava & Cacao Body Crème with a light pressure message. After relieving all the tension in our hands and arms, Jessica spritzed on a finishing note of Nectarine Blossom & Honey Cologne to blend the scents together.

Dan Healey established bespoke furnishings business, Den Interiors, in 2002. The business originally opened as a retail store on the corner of Oldham Street and Hilton Street in Manchester’s rapidly developing Northern Quarter.

Offering tailor-made furniture and interior design services to individuals and businesses alike, it wasn’t long before Dan found himself styling the interiors of some of the city’s most frequented establishments. Venues such as Rosso Restaurant, Home Sweet Home, The Circle Club, Nicky Clarke Hair Salons and Almost Famous were well aware of the draw a unique interior design can bring, and Dan quickly made a name for himself as the man to bring venue concepts to life. By 2012 Den had outgrown its premises in the former sewing machine shop. With the Northern Quarter now firmly established 60

A range of 12 bespoke sofa designs and a collection of mirrors, coffee tables and dining room furniture makes Den the perfect destination for anyone looking to furnish their home with something a bit unique.

as prime hipster real estate, business rates had increased by over fifty percent during the 10 years Den had been in operation, so Dan decided to relocate outside of the city and bought up half a mill in Bury. Along with his team of eight employees, he now has plenty of space to manufacture on site, and can easily manage projects such as the new Almost Famous bar in Liverpool, which installed fifties-replica car seats, and distressed beech table-tops, as part of their Americana-themed concept.

Dan and his team of specialist craftsmen welcome visitors to the mill and are always happy to talk through ideas, processes, fabrics and finishes for commissions, on an obligation-free basis. Just call ahead so Dan can have a pot of tea ready!

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Having launched in July this year, Dress for Success Manchester has now helped nearly one hundred unemployed women. A charity offering a unique service. The results show 1 in 2 women styled will go on to get the job! The boutique style premises in Parsonage Chambers is designed to be a safe space away from the street level where women feel secure and can get prepared for their interview. Expert one-to-one advice and confidence coaching is given to every woman, plus an outfit they feel good in and that is theirs to keep.

Dress for Success evolved from a small group of women donating clothes, to having 130 affiliates worldwide. The head office in New York was established in 1997, and other European cities where the charity is set up include Paris, Amsterdam and Lisbon, however Manchester is the only city with a Dress for Success in England.

The name Christian Dior is renowned worldwide, yet it is little known that the designer himself only headed his fashion house for ten short years, due to his untimely death in 1957. Nevertheless Dior’s designs shook the world. His first collection originally named Corolle and Huit nipped in waists and gave full skirts for his ‘Flower Women’, The style became immortalised by Harpers editor Carmel Snow who gave it the moniker the ‘New Look’.

It is with the New Look that the small but concisely executed exhibition at the Gallery of Costume begins, represented in the form of every woman’s staple: the little black dress. The gown on display from 1947 is classic New Look, with a full flowing skirt, tiny cinched waist and décolletage enhancing neckline. This simple, yet striking design certainly wouldn’t look out of place worn for a night on the tiles today. It is true that the best designs never date.

The Dior exhibition is on at the Gallery of Costume until Sunday 12 January 2014. Entry is free.

Christian Dior himself isn’t the only talent of the house showcased, the work of his protégé - the young Yves Saint Laurent who succeeded after Dior’s death, is seen in a sumptuous pink floral delight. Other highlights include the 1949 black silk cocktail dress commissioned for Wallace Simpson, The Duchess of Windsor – she may have caused a scandal but she knew how to cut a dash.

This stunning exhibition is a must see for anyone looking to delve back in time to the days of true glamour. Two rooms are dedicated to the exhibition and additional Dior creations can be found at home in the permanent collection, nestling amongst designs by Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. The contemporary fashion galleries are accompanied by historical fashion throughout the ages.

The Sultanate of

Oman

Just a stone’s throw from Dubai, but bearing very little resemblance to its commercialised neighbour, Oman is a slice of the authentic Middle East, and fast becoming a luxury and adventure tourism hotspot. Long sandy beaches are flanked by palm trees against a backdrop of rugged mountains, beautiful Arabian architecture, colourful souks, and endless deserts. There are plenty of opportunities for trekking and outdoor adventure. A relatively new country, Oman is definitely on the up – but never more than 10 storeys up, and always true to Arabic style. Buildings are built with aesthetics in mind – perfect symmetry, beautiful patterns, mosaics and attention to detail (you’ll rarely see something as banal as a drainpipe... unattractive things like this are hidden in beautifully patterned stone casing). The skyline is punctuated by minarets; every available wall is covered in hot pink bourgainvillea; and the streets are lined with flowers. Muscat, the capital, is a city sandwiched between the sea and the mountains, and as the sun sets the white city is bathed in an apricot glow. It really is beautifully idyllic.

WHERE TO STAY For the ultimate in luxury, head to the Chedi, a stunning boutique hotel. The design is exceptional, and in the evening guests can sit in the palm-filled gardens and sip cocktails around their own fire pit. It has a private beach, and a number of beautiful shaded pools, including the longest in the Middle East.

WHAT TO DO A trip to the Middle East wouldn’t be complete without a desert experience. The Desert Nights Camp offer luxury camping on the edge of the desert, featuring air-conditioned huts with tented roofs – so camping in the very loosest sense. Package options include a 4x4 ride to the top of the dunes to watch the sunset, an amazing Arabic buffet/barbeque dinner under the stars, bed, breakfast and a camel ride. Another must-do activity in Oman is to hike through a ‘Wadi’ (valley – or dry riverbed). Wadi Shab is one of the most stunning, and finishes with a swim through a ‘keyhole’ into a rock-pool cave with a waterfall. Finally, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat is stunning both by day and night. The architecture is spectacular. Inside is the second largest hand-woven Persian carpet in the world and the most exquisite – and enormous – chandelier.

WHAT TO EAT Oman certainly didn’t disappoint on the local food front: delicious spiced meats, salads, flatbreads and all the dips and sauces you’d expect from Middle-Eastern cuisine. Kargeens in Muscat is a great place for an authentic experience, with outdoor terraces complete with lanterns, and the option to eat in the traditional way, sat on cushions on the floor. The fish restaurant at Jebel Sifa serves up their catch of the day from the beach shack at tables and chairs on the sand.

Americana, pop-ups, pulled pork and elderflower… all of these things are enjoying quite a bit of popularity in the Manchester food and drink scene at the moment, but perhaps none more so than the cocktail bar.

This year’s sell-out Cocktails in the City event at Manchester Town Hall made it clear that mixology is most definitely here – and here to stay. From the flaming tiki lounges of The Liars Club and Hula, to the smooth, suave artistry and opulence of The Alchemist and Australasia, to the dark, Manhattan-esque drinking dens like The Liquor Store and Dusk til Pawn, cocktails have become a serious business. But it would be foolish indeed to think that the city centre holds the monopoly on fantastic cocktail bars, as I soon found out when I visited The Violet Hour in south Manchester suburb, West Didsbury. This little bar occupies the site of an old butcher shop on leafy, lively Burton Road, which brims with eyecatching boutiques and independents. Intimate yet inviting, the exposed brickwork, wooden tables and Chesterfield sofas create an aura of a boutique hotel or an aesthete’s living room. Comfort is effortlessly entwined with class, and live music adds to the chilled vibe.

The Violet Hour’s primary draw is its cocktails, and the menu bursts with invention. A firm favourite, which has survived each iteration of the menu, is the Brazilian-inspired Backstreet Batida, made with Velha Barreiro Cachaça, Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum, Coco Real, passion fruit and Ting, served in a tin can. But this time I opted instead for the Portobello Porn Star – a long drink consisting of Portobello Road gin, basil, strawberry and pink fizz, and a good choice to kick-start the evening. Similarly easy-drinking was the King Tut, which mixed Cariel vanilla vodka with Velvet Falernum (a sweet syrup used in Caribbean and tropical drinks), mint, pistachio and fiery ginger beer. The recently launched food menu, meanwhile, is a simple yet enticing one-page affair, offering a selection of small plates, larger plates, burgers and sides, and a handful of desserts.

Of the small plates, we picked the slow cooked salt and pepper pork ribs with cider mayonnaise, the panko crab cakes with lime and yellow mustard dressing, and crispy Yorkshire puds with blue cheese and chilli jam.

Daddy Violet Burger

Crispy Beer Battered Cod

All three plates offered something deeply pleasing to the palate – the pairing of mini Yorkshire puddings and blue cheese uniting two of my favourite things – but the most impressive, both in presentation and taste, were the slow cooked ribs, which came artfully arranged on newsprint paper on slate, with the creamy cider mayonnaise served in a hollowed lime. The meat, with its crispy coating, fell from the bone, as if it had waited its whole life to collapse, ever so willing, into my eager maw. I could have eaten two more lots. And with three small plates costing only £10, it’s something I will be sure to consider should I return with carnivorous friends in tow.

“The slow cooked ribs, came artfully arranged on newsprint paper on slate” Speaking of carnivores, the Daddy Violet from the burger menu is a dish not to be undertaken lightly. This meaty mammoth consists of a 6oz patty, topped with a mound of pulled pork, crispy bacon and double cheese, lathered with bbq and burger sauce and topped off with a beer battered pickle. My dining companion was, to his great shame, defeated by this burger behemoth. In this episode of Man vs. Food, food definitely won. Meanwhile, I thoroughly enjoyed my bigger plate (£8, or two for £15) of crispy beer battered cod, with honey glazed chorizo, olives, garlic, cherry tomatoes and paprika – another excellent combination of well-matched, drool-inducing textures and flavours. Somewhat unsurprisingly, however, we had no room for dessert. The gooey chocolate brownie will have to wait until next time. The Violet Hour has already made waves with locals and city-dwellers alike for its unpretentious, chilled ambience and excellent and innovative cocktails. It can now be proud to add tasty, handsomely presented, great-value food to its offering.

Claire Watt-Smith is the founder and designer behind the label BoBelle London, a brand that creates bespoke handbags and accessories all crafted in England. The pieces are crisp, sharp and combine structured designs with a timeless shape. Watt-Smith’s designs are sold in more than fifty boutiques and department stores throughout the UK. The latest collection is inspired by the classic architecture of London:

WAKE-UP! The first thing I do in the morning is pop downstairs to make tea. I usually have two cups, one green tea and one Yorkshire to get me going. I hop in the shower and then check my phone for any important emails before grabbing a quick breakfast and heading for the train. MORNING I tend to respond to any social media updates on the train and check what my schedule looks like for that day. Running BoBelle is very varied; some days I work from our Somerset House base, other days I have press meetings or networking appointments in town. I adore living in London and one of my favourite parts of running BoBelle is meeting so many different people. LUNCH-TIME I don’t eat too heavily at lunchtime as it can make me quite sleepy. I love a chunky soup, or salad and fresh bread. AFTERNOON I tend to have a checklist run through in the afternoon. I deal with any orders that need dispatching, factory updates that need discussing or events that need arranging. I then plan for the next

morning’s meetings and schedule our press releases and social media. The afternoon is always very busy and come 4pm I have a cup of tea and biscuit to perk me up before any evening appointments with clients. We are in the middle of preparing for the Somerset House Christmas Arcade, so that has a lot of work attached.
