TREAT YOURSELF - watch top chefs at Rochdale Food & Drink Festival CBeebies ‘I Can Cook’ presenter Katy Ashworth is promising to bring her energetic burst of silliness and family fun to the festival indoor stage – with shows at 10:30am and 1:30pm aimed at children and grown-ups packed with games, sing a long songs and laughter, learning about where food comes from through music and imagination.

The region’s foodies are in for a treat – tickets are now on sale for cookery shows in the festival kitchen at Rochdale Food & Drink Festival, staged on Saturday 24 March in and around Rochdale Town Hall. Four chefs will be cooking live during the new event, with seven 40-minute demonstrations scheduled packed with tips, techniques and the opportunity to ask questions and meet the hosts. Multi award-winning Jean-Christophe Novelli and Indian street food restauranteur Nisha Katona will be among the chefs cooking at the festival alongside star foodie Andrew Nutter and young local chef Tom McNeeney.

Local star chef Andrew Nutter has had an amazing career since coming runner-up in the National Junior Cook of the Year competition aged 13. Seven years later he launched ‘Nutters’ Restaurant, which soon expanded into its 18th century manor house in Norden. He’s won multiple awards, including Lancashire Chef of the Year, Restaurant of the Year, and ‘Rochdale Man of the Year.’ Last year he opened his latest venture – gastropub ‘The Bird at Birtle.’ At 4:30pm it’ll be time for Tom McNeeney, head chef at local family pub The Oxford. He made his debut at Rochdale Feel Good Festival in 2016 and since then has firmly established himself on the area’s culinary scene.

As well as a renowned television personality, French celebrity chef Novelli runs his own cookery schools and is a successful restaurateur and author of a wide range of books. Dubbed ‘the nation’s favourite French chef’ Jean Christophe is a 5 out of 5 AA Rosette and multi-Michelin star award winner. Indian curry chef Nisha Katona will be sharing her quick and easy dishes. The food writer, curry evangelist, teacher and owner of Manchester restaurant Mowgli, gave up her career as a barrister to focus on her passion for Indian food. Famous for creating simple dishes, her recipes are healthy, often vegan and packed with fresh flavour. She promises authentic Indian dishes in 20 minutes using just three spices. Nisha has also appeared on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and Saturday Kitchen.

If you don’t manage to grab a ticket for one of the demonstrations there’ll be a free seating area to watch chef demonstrations on big screens and soak up the festival atmosphere! The festival kitchen will be located inside the grade one listed town hall along with plenty of stalls and free things to do. There’ll be an outside food and drink village, a series of free themed workshops covering wine tasting, cocktail making, chocolate making and more plus live music from local acts.

Rochdale Food and Drink Festival is on Saturday 24 March, open from 10am to 6pm and admission is free. To book cookery workshop tickets and find out more visit www.rochdale.gov.uk/events Like the festival on Facebook www.facebook.com/RochdaleFoodFestival or connect on twitter @RochFoodFest

Coronation Street’s

JULIA GOULDING Rochdale girl, Julia Goulding, has quickly become a Coronation Street favourite and her character Shona Ramsey has firmly established herself on the Street. Since joining Corrie in 2016, Julia has found herself at the centre of many dramatic storylines and as the latest addition to the ever-changing Platt household, the drama looks set to continue. Style caught up with Julia to discuss living the dream on the legendary cobbles, why she’ll always be a Corrie fan and the Mighty Dale! 4

messes up but things come from a good place with her. Are there any similarities between you both? I don’t think I mess up as much as Shona! My life definitely isn’t as dramatic as hers which I’m grateful for! We both wear Doc Martens but that’s probably where the similarity ends!

Style: Corrie has been your dream job since you were 5, how did it feel to finally step onto the cobbles? Julia: Honestly, it was the most overwhelming thing. When I did my first scene out on the cobbles I literally just had to come out of the house (I was living with Eileen at the time) spot David and run back in. Everything was focused on Shona’s reaction so all the cameras were on me. While everything was being set up, I just took a moment and I filled up - I was like ‘I’m on Coronation Street, I’m living in Elsie Tanners house and I’m about to do a scene completely on my own’. It just hit me like a train that I was actually on Coronation Street. The most wonderful, overwhelming moment ever. How did you get the part? My agent rang me up with an audition for a new regular and it went from there. I did the preliminary audition with Gennie Radcliffe the casting director, then a screen test with Jack P Shepherd (David) and a second screen test, and later that day, about five hours after the screen test while I was on the train from Manchester back to London - as I was living in London at the time - my agent rang me and said I’d got the job! It was unbelievable... and I was on the train with nobody to hug!!

Which scene has been your favourite to film so far? One of my favourite scenes was the revelation to David that Clayton was my son, set in the graveyard. It was a good scene to film because Jack and I were really able to stretch our legs and go at it acting wise. I was quite nervous about it as well because it was the big revelation about who Shona was, so there was a lot pinned on that.

But to be honest I just love doing scenes with all these legends – Helen Worth (Gail Platt), David Neilson (Roy Cropper), Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw). I have to try to keep my cool. I still pinch myself now!

Does Shona play a big part in supporting David throughout the male rape storyline? I don’t really know what’s going to happen with the storyline as it’s very much David’s story and how he deals with whats happened to him; whether or not that’s him telling somebody, I genuinely don’t know at the moment. I know that Jack’s going to do a great job with it though. No matter what the writer’s come up with he’ll do it real justice because obviously it’s an incredibly sensitive storyline as well. Do you think it’s important for soaps to tackle sensitive issues such as this? Absolutely. Corrie’s a family show and it’s really important to tackle issues that aren’t really spoken about as much and to do it in a very sensitive way. Corrie’s research and writing team know exactly what they’re doing with this so I’ve got every faith in them. How have Corrie fans reacted to Shona and David’s romance? At first I think people were very wary as obviously filling shoes like Kylie’s is a very big deal. Paula Lane who played Kylie is such a fantastic actor. But I like to look at it as not filling her shoes but just seeing a different side to David in a different relationship. Nobody can replace Kylie, I remember when she died, I was at home watching Corrie sobbing – not knowing I’d be the next in line to be going out with David Platt! (cont...)

How would you describe Shona? She’s a good egg, in difficult situations I’d say. She always tries to do her best but doesn’t necessarily make the correct decisions. She www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

(...cont.)

Do you think they will live happily ever after? Nobody ever does in soapland do they?! We may or may not. If we do I imagine there will lots of bumps along the way. Who are you closest to on set? All of the Platts really. We spend a lot of time together and just have such a laugh, it literally is like being part of a family, it’s really good fun. But I’d have to say Jack to be honest as we do spend the most time together. You’d be in trouble if you didn’t say Jack…! Yeh I have to say Jack, he’s got my hand behind my back! Haha. Any embarrassing moments? Oh loads, have you got all day?! I’m always embarrassing myself! One of my first scenes was with Helen Worth (Gail) - we were about to go for a take, the crew were having a big of a giggle and Helen said “Julia I really have to stop you, your flies are down and everyone’s laughing”. It was really embarrassing as the new girl! 6

Do you watch yourself on television? I do, because I used to watch the show anyway. And I don’t know other people’s storylines so it’s good to keep up with what else is going on on the Street. But also it’s a good critique. Some people hate watching themselves – I can’t say I enjoy it but I think it’s good for me to watch and see how I can improve. What advice would you give to aspiring actors? Just don’t give up. It’s a horrible business to be in sometimes. When you’re constantly working towards something and feeling like you’re not getting anywhere, just keep going. The rewards do pay off if you persevere. Is Coronation Street your first television job? Yes I finished drama school six years ago now and this is my very first television job. I’ve done a lot of theatre – fringe theatre and jobs I haven’t been paid for, just for the experience. Do you prefer theatre or television? I just wouldn’t be able to choose www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

between the two - I completely love both but they’re so different. What are you hoping the future holds for Shona? Last year was a bit turbulent with the Clayton revelation but things have settled down a bit for her now. She’s plodding along quite nicely so I’m ready for a bit more drama for her to be honest. Will Clayton get out of prison early? Who knows?! I think he got about 15 years but you never know in soapland do you! So you’re looking to stay on the street as long as you can? As long as they’ll have me, absolutely! Finally, what’s the best thing about Rochdale? At the moment I’d have to say Rochdale AFC! A big well done to Dale for that amazing draw against Tottenham! Honestly I was watching through my hands!!

MOLLY ROBBINS From Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers Style recently caught up with Molly Robbins, star of Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers. Daughter of actor and comedian Ted Robbins and distant cousin of Paul McCartney, it seems only natural that the talented 27-year-old should also end up in the limelight. Molly’s sweet treats are designed to look like animals, pies, pizza and everything in between! She receives nationwide orders for the delicious desserts which are made from Madeira cake, jam and butter cream. One episode of Extreme Cake Makers featured Molly making one of her biggest commissions - a life size sculpture of a Shetland pony called Bea, which was over 3 feet tall and used 25 kilos of sugar paste! Molly has swiftly gained fans from across country after showcasing her incredible cake creations on the popular series. Clearly at ease infront of the camera, we’re sure there is much more on the horizon for Molly’s television career... the next Mary Berry?

8

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Style: Where did your passion for cake making begin? Molly: I’ve always been quite creative and loved making things. I studied art and then special effects makeup at uni, the cakes sort of came alongside as a way to make a bit of extra money as a student! What has been the most challenging cake to make? Probably the Shetland pony I did for Series One of Extreme Cake Makers; it was the first cake where I had to make a full wooden frame, the size of it also meant it was the heaviest cake I’ve ever made, and the first cake to be stood on four legs!

What has been the oddest cake request you’ve received? I’ve had some requests for really gory cakes, guts and blood and brains spilling out of decomposing zombies. I said no to that one... I’ll generally do anything but I kind of think cake shouldn’t make people feel sick (unless they’ve eaten too much!). Best and worst aspects of your job? The best is definitely being able to express my creativity and do something different every day. The worse aspects have to be the mess, the planning and the fact I work on my own all day (and night) which can get quite lonely. What’s the longest it has taken to make one cake? Because my cakes are usually for customers I can’t really leave them for longer than three days once the cake has gone in. The competition entries I can take a bit longer over, as they aren’t eaten, but generally my attention span is as long as about 4-5 days and then I get fed up.

What’s your proudest achievement so far? Three Gold awards at Cake International, as well as both series of Extreme Cake Makers. Being a part of the show since it’s first episode has been amazing as I feel we have had a real say in the way the series has grown and developed. I’m also really thrilled to have so many people contacting me every day to say how much they love the show. It’s really popular with kids too which is lovely. How did filming for Extreme Cake Makers go? Did you enjoy it? It was HARD WORK more than anything. I was in 21 episodes out of 30 which was a lot more than any of the other artists in the series. I must be mad. The hours were long and I worked 7 days a week most weeks, but watching the series back it has been totally worth it and I am really proud.

Is there one you’d love to make? Animals are always my favourite cake commissions. I’m halfway through a two foot giraffe cake as we speak and I am really enjoying myself! I like alpacas and llamas at the moment, they have really funny faces and I think they’d make good cakes.

Would you like to do more tv work or presenting in the future? I always said I wasn’t interested in the tv stuff, as my whole family has been in the industry for years, but I find it really easy to talk to the camera when I’m talking about something I am really passionate and quite knowledgable about, so fingers crossed some more tv opportunities may come my way.

Have you thought about creating a life size celebrity?! I have, but the pressure would be too much! If you get a face just slightly “off” it can look awful and I wouldn’t want them to be offended!

We’re going to Wem-ber-lee! By the time you read this we’ll know the outcome of the replay against Spurs at Wembley on the 28th February. Whatever the result, Dale have had a magnificent cup run and done us all — the club, the supporters and the town itself — proud. Most importantly, as manager Keith Hill said in an interview, it’s put the club’s financial future solidly in the black for two or even three seasons.

Images by JMSportPix The home draw against Spurs was a thrilling occasion. Dale were full of enterprise and energy, had much the better chances and deserved to be ahead with Ian Henderson’s lethal strike minutes before the break. Spurs were a bit shell-shocked, I think. Their multi-million pound squad were given a rude reminder that football is a game of physical contact as well as skill: Dale were up front and personal, always in their faces, always quicker to the ball.

Good job there isn’t a roof on Spotland stadium — it would have been blown clean off as the crowd erupted. Such was the joyous celebration you’d have thought we’d won the game, not just drawn it. Against all the odds, and with an estimated world-wide television audience of over 100 million watching, Dale had earned themselves a replay at Wembley. And well deserved too! Following the replay, an even bigger challenge faces the club. We have to haul ourselves off the bottom of League One and avoid relegation. If they play like this and show the same fighting spirit, these lads can do it. Up the Dale! Trevor Hoyle Trevor Hoyle’s most recent novel, The Last Gasp, is published by Quercus at £10.99. Also available as an ebook.

One of the main talking points before the match was the state of the pitch. Against Millwall in the previous round we might have been playing on Southport sands, so it was a courageous and correct decision to spend a large sum (not far short of half-a-million quid my spies tell me) on relaying it. Twenty-six lorry-loads of turf all the way from Lithuania were rolled out and ready to play on in just eight days - and held up superbly. The immaculate playing surface possibly did us a huge favour when, in the third minute of added time, and with Dale trailing 2-1, Steve Davies took a long pass and brought down the ball with a single touch and drilled it low and hard into the bottom right-hand corner, leaving their keeper no chance. 10

HOPE FOR

HOPWOOD HALL

For most people in the Rochdale borough, the name Hopwood Hall is associated with the college that has two sites - the large campus on the road to Middleton and St Mary’s Gate in the town centre. The actual hall outside Middleton was the home of the Hopwood family for centuries and later became De La Salle Catholic teacher training college. The college was taken over by Rochdale Council as a tertiary college site and a massive building programme has taken place on the campus. The original hall, however, was not used and had fallen into disrepair. At present, it lies behind security fencing on the far side of the college, near to the old chapel designed by Frederick Gibberd. Pevsner’s Buildings of England gives more detail, describing it as a ‘rambling irregular house of brick with stone roofs, built around a tiny courtyard’. Now another Hopwood has appeared: Hopwood DePree, a film producer and actor from the USA. Hopwood grew up, rather embarrassed with his highly unusual name and used to try and hide it. He eventually decided to research his name and, through an ancestry website, found his connection with the Hopwood family of Middleton. When Hopwood came over to Rochdale, he was entranced by the old Hopwood Hall building. He told me that it was a bitter sweet experience, both incredibly moving and inspiring. The hall was clearly in need of urgent repair. Like far too many old buildings, once the lead on the roof was stolen, severe rain damage had occurred. Hopwood soon came into contact with Bob Wall who had been keeping an eye on the hall for several years and trying to stop further damage. I was lucky enough to obtain a place on Heritage Open Day last September and went on a tour of the hall, led by Hopwood and Bob. For safety reasons, we were not allowed to view more than a couple of rooms but what we saw inspired us all. We saw the Jacobean carvings and stone fireplaces in this remarkable building that has original features from as far back as the 1420’s. 12

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Hopwood’s story seems straight out of a film script; an American comes over to England to restore his ancestral home. This story, though, is serious and completely true. Hopwood tells me that the hall is being saved just in time; in five or ten years time, it would simply be rubble and beyond repair. There is huge local interest and support for restoring the hall; I witnessed this on Heritage Open Day last year. There were former De La Salle students; children of former staff; local historians; local residents and councillors, all chatting to each other with their own memories of the hall. Hopwood had brought over many members of his family from the USA to help with the Open Day. His young niece was confidently selling postcards of the hall. It was a splendid and expertly organised event. Hopwood wants the building to become a centre for creativity and the arts. A friends group for volunteering

opportunities has been formed and a successful meeting was held in November last year. I recently met up with Hopwood and we lunched at the Art Cafe, Touchstones, before moving over to the Local Studies Library to view the Hopwood Family Archives. Hopwood was fascinated by the wealth of material in the archive boxes which had been brought out especially for us. There is a mixture of photographs of the family and the hall; society invitations; plans; auctioneer lists; letters and documents. I could sense Hopwood’s connection with the family’s history, not least the last generation to live at the hall who included Brenda Cecilia Hopwood. Hopwood DePree has already made a huge impact in the Rochdale area, the northern region and the UK. He has appeared on local radio and television, ITV’s breakfast show and in The Daily Telegraph. There

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

is a dedicated YouTube channel ‘Hopwood XIV’ where you can view the progress of the campaign to restore Hopwood Hall. Hopwood’s enthusiasm is genuine, heartfelt and infectious. In a world of fake news and so-called ‘celebrities’, I believe that this American philanthropist and movie mogul is the real thing. Within only a few months of living here, Hopwood DePree seems like a true Rochdalian, albeit with a different accent! If anyone can save this Grade II * listed building for the community, it will be this man, the hall’s namesake. The Aesthetic Rooms is a specialist skin enhancing and anti-ageing clinic in Norden, Rochdale. Owner Zoe Pearson, a qualified nurse and independent prescriber has over ten years experience in Aesthetic treatments. Zoe previously held mobile clinics at various salons around Rochdale before opening The Aesthetic Rooms in August 2017. The clinic brings a city centre feel to the local area with advanced treatments and procedures in its modern setting.

TREATMENT FOCUS - JAWLINE SCULPTING

TREATMENT FOCUS - LIP ENHANCEMENT

A new treatment available with Zoe is the jawline sculpting filler, something that can only be carried out by an advanced practitioner.

Who says that fuller lips have to look fake? Some lipsticks or lip glosses have a temporary plumping effect, but when you want gorgeously defined lips all day long, you need a solution that doesn’t wash off. With just a bit more volume added, it is possible to enhance the lips you were given without making them look unnatural.

A sagging jawline is a key indicator of facial ageing and often has a significant impact on a person’s appearance. Administering dermal filler treatment can offer significant improvement to the contour of the jawline. While hyaluronic acid (HA) can be used successfully, Zoe’s treatment of choice is RADIESSE, a dermal filler composed of small calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres that is suspended in a soft gel matrix. Once injected, it aims to provide immediate volume and correction, as well as stimulate the skin to produce its own natural collagen. The treatment will contour, lift and define the jawline to create a more youthful appearance which can also result in a slimmer looking face. For the best results it may be advised to also treat the cheeks and chin with Radiesse. This will all be discussed during the assessment and consultation. Prices start at £350 & can last 12 months.

Dermal filler injections into the lips have been a popular treatment for many years, with women of all ages. There are lots of results that can be achieved using dermal filler which is a hyaluoronic acid (HA) based gel injected into the lip. Whether it is a subtle enhancement to restore volume that has been lost with the aging process, or fine lines around the lip. Dermal filler can also be used to ‘plump’ the lips for a client wanting to make the lips bigger or to create a better shape/size than they naturally have. Everyone’s lips are different and everyone’s desired look is different. During a consultation with Zoe all aspects of the results and expectations are discussed in detail. Prices for lip fillers start at £125 for 0.55ml of Juvederm which lasts around 6-9 months, until it is gradually broken down by the body. As a qualified nurse Zoe administers an anaesthetic prior to treatment to minimise discomfort during the procedure.

STREET EAT RETURNS to Rochdale Town Centre

this May Bank Holiday weekend!

Following on from the huge success of last year’s ‘Street Eat’, the exciting, free event returns on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May from 11am until 9pm in Rochdale Town Hall Square.

Town Centre Manager, Paul Ambrose, commented: “The idea for the event is simple, in that local food and drink businesses set up stalls around the Town Hall Square and showcase what they have to offer. Last year the event was attended by over 3000 people with over 10 local food and drink businesses taking part. We will build on the success of last year’s event by increasing the number of local businesses that attend and offering additional family orientated activities. We aim to provide something for everyone.” “Last year’s event attracted regular customers, local residents and visitors and portrayed the town in a positive light which increased the chances of those attending wanting to return to the town again.”

Organised by Rochdale Town Centre Management and supported by Rochdale Borough Council, there will be an array of stalls from the town’s thriving food and drink establishments. You’ll be able to try and buy as many small dishes as you like!

Once again this year’s event will be staged by Rochdale Town Hall, adjacent to the re-opened River Roch, utilizing the new paved area around the Gracie Fields Statue. With a traditional set up, a dining area in the centre, bunting and lights, it’s set to be an unforgettable weekend. There will also be free entertainment as you bask in the relaxed ambience of al fresco dining! Packed full of good stuff this is a lighter, brighter way to dropkick your day into a fabulous one” Serves 2 Ingredients 2 slices, good seeded brown bread 2 large eggs 2 tbsp spirit vinegar 120g smoked salmon 2 ripe avocados 1 tomato 1/2 lime 1/4 red onion diced pinch of chilli flakes sea salt & black pepper wedge of lemon 16

Method So this couldn’t be easier... first of all whack your tomato in a hot oven, halved, sprinkled on the open sides with a little salt & pepper, roast for ten minutes - this’ll bring out all the goodness in it. I always have a few of these in the fridge, they’re great for salads or on cheese on toast. Let it cool before doing the rest. Pop on a pan of water with your vinegar to boil. While that’s happening, grab yourself a bowl and scoop out all of the avocado, throw in your roasted tomato and diced red onion, squeeze in half a lime, a good pinch of chilli flakes and season well with salt & pepper. Mash the lot together a bit with the back of a fork. I like to keep mine fairly chunky but it’s your call how much you mash. Now once your water is boiling reduce it to a simmer, break your eggs into the simmering water and pop your toast in. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

There’s a lot of fancy tricks with poached eggs but I just give them 2 1/2 minutes in simmering water then pull them out with a slotted spoon. While your eggs are doing their thing, get your toast on a plate, top with your avocado mix, then a few locks of lovely smoked salmon, scoop out your eggs, taking care to drain off any extra water, then crown your salmon with your egg. A few twists of black pepper and a squeeze of lemon, maybe a little hot sauce if you’re fancy and that is a dreamy start to any day!

BANANA & HONEY BREAD

“No scented candle in the world, no air freshener, no diffuser or plug in will ever, ever, make your house smell half as good as baking a loaf of banana bread will. That my friends is a solid gold fact.”

EXTRA FLUFFY BLUEBERRY PANCAKES “When it comes to pancakes in this country we really miss out. Unless it’s a token effort on pancake day we don’t bother much but that might be about to change. Once you’ve had a stack of these fluffy little beasties you’ll be converted!” Makes about a dozen pancakes Ingredients 8 rashers smoked streaky bacon 250g plain flour 50g caster sugar pinch of salt 1 tsp maple syrup 2 eggs 60g melted butter, room temperature 400ml milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 tsp baking powder handful of blueberries Method Pop your bacon in the oven and cook how you prefer - I’m not a fan of crispy bacon but with this it really works against the spongey pancakes. Separate your eggs, with the whites whisk

Makes 2 loaves the hell out of them till they form fluffy, bright white peaks - this recipe is all about getting as much air into your pancakes as possible and although you can skip this step it really helps! Combine all of your dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, make a well in the centre and add in your wet ingredients (apart from your whisked egg whites). Mix together your wet ingredients before folding in your dry mixture slowly to form a smooth batter. Now into this carefully fold in your egg whites, gently does it. Get a large, none stick pan over a low/ medium heat and rub the pan with a little butter. You’re best off using about half a ladle’s worth of batter per pancake, ideally you want them to be the width of a coaster. I do them in batches of two. Pour in your batter then sprinkle a few blueberries on top. Give them a few minutes to brown underneath and then flip them. Give them a few more minutes then lift out of the pan and repeat till the batter is used up. I keep them warm in the bottom shelf of the oven set to low till they’re all ready. Serve them topped with your bacon and a little extra maple syrup... whatever the day throws at you after that will have a tough job killing your good vibes! www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Ingredients 5 very ripe bananas 5 medium eggs 500g plain flour 2 tbsp runny honey 2 tsp vanilla extract 210g caster sugar 220g butter, softened 2 heaped teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp ground cinnamon Method Pop your oven on 180ºC, line two loaf tins with buttered greaseproof paper and get a large mixing bowl. Lob your bananas into the mixing bowl and mash them up with a fork, now add your eggs and combine with the banana mash. Swap out your fork for a plastic spatula and add in all the other ingredients mixing as you go until everything is combined and there’s no lumps of anything noticeable. Then divide the mix between the two tins, or just do two batches with the one tin, pop in the middle shelf of your oven. After about 40 minutes pop a metal skewer into the loaf, if it comes out clean, its done. That’s it. That’s literally all there is to it. What are you waiting for?! 17

Spring is on its way...

Finally the days are lasting longer, and there are glimmers of green slowly but surely creeping into our

gardens. Most of us have been in hibernation mode since Christmas, enduring the unpleasant combination of an abstinent January and the dark, depressing and downright dastardly weather that’s been inflicted

on us over the winter, so it’s safe to say that a little positive stimulation would be nice. It could be argued that spring is the best time to make good on your ‘New Year’s Resolution’, whether that’s resolving to

travel more to experience a new culture (and better weather, yes, we’re British, we’re obsessed with the

weather), taking up a new sport, or enrolling on a college course. In optimistic anticipation of the coming sunshine, ‘Style’ has a few suggestions for some seasonal pick-me-ups for when you emerge, butterfly like, into the coming spring.

WRITE A BUCKET LIST With all the extra time you’ve got on your hands from your newfound organisational skills (see above!), you can now do that thing you’ve been meaning to do for goodness knows how long...write a bucket list. This is your chance to get down in black and white all the things you’d love to do, before you shuffle off this mortal coil, and writing it down might be just the motivation you need to actually start ticking those dreams off. As mine involves things like afternoon tea at the Ritz and visiting Iguazu Falls in South America, it may take me a few years to actually implement, but I’ll get there.

GET ORGANISED Sometimes there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do all that we need to do. Obviously, we have to go to work, and get some sleep at some point, but apart from that there should be a little bit of time left over to do fun stuff too, right? It’s a question of prioritising, switching off the television, getting off your smartphone (Facebook is an absolute time black hole) and consciously resolving to get the boring stuff done so you can then get round to the fun stuff. Download an app or go old school and invest in a diary, either will help you see where you’re wasting time and help you remedy this. And as if by magic, you’ll have time to do all the fun stuff I’m going to suggest for you now. 20

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

BOOST YOUR FITNESS After visiting the gym twice in January, does anybody actually return? There are lots of other, more exciting and unorthodox ways to get fit nowadays. Take up salsa or ballroom dancing, join a road cycling group, rope in a friend to try pole fitness with, look up your local martial arts centre or get online and follow a Pilates or yoga tutorial. You’ll have fun while blasting away those winter cobwebs, de-stress and have an *official* hobby as well as getting fit – win win.

GO ON A UK SAFARI Obviously you may struggle to see giraffes and lions roaming about the English countryside, but there is plenty of other exciting wildlife on our doorstep that you might never have realised was here. Another feature on my bucket list is to see dolphins in the wild, and believe it or not, there are lots of places in the UK to do it, including Cardigan Bay in Wales, the Moray Firth in Scotland and several spots on the south coast of England in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. There’s also a resident pod of killer whales which live off the west coast of Scotland. Or if cetaceans aren’t your thing, you can spot Britain’s native squirrel species, the red squirrel, at nature trails in Formby, Anglesey and at several reserves in Northumberland. You can watch seal pups being born at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire from September to December, or observe puffins in the Farne Islands, Yorkshire and numerous sites in Scotland. Not to mention that you can take part in bat spotting events across the UK, or head up to the Lakes for a bit of bird watching, with Grizedale Forest in particular being a lovely spot to see species such as red kites and tawny owls. Grizedale is also home to Britain’s only indigenous herd of red deer, and if you’re lucky you might also spy the resident roe deer too.

VOLUNTEER There are hundreds of local charities that are desperate for volunteers to help out. Lots of charities allow you to volunteer on an ad-hoc basis, as and when suits you, or you can commit to a set time every week. Animal charities such as Bleakholt in Edenfield are currently advertising for volunteer dog walkers, you could ‘Share a Skill’, like teaching an instrument at a local homeless centre, or become a conservation volunteer and get involved with improving your local community. Charities like the National Trust recruit ‘house volunteers’, so you could indulge your passion for local history and heritage at the same time as helping out. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, give back and feel more positive about yourself.

Happy Spring! Rachel Clarke

BAHN-STORMING START TO THE YEAR

It’s that time of the year when one starts to take stock of one’s position in life, dwelling on opportunities lost and worrying about future challenges. Yes that’s right dear reader, it’s nearly my birthday. Now, it’s not a big one ending in a zero or anything but it’s got to the stage where my dad is staring back at me from the mirror and I keep realising its too “late” for quite a lot of things, like becoming a RAF fighter pilot for example. So, with my middle age crisis starting to form nicely, my mind has turned to sports cars. However, being a practical kind of person, I still want space to carry around the odd large broken piece of old car or drag the odd old jalopy out of a hedge and let’s be honest, a tow bar on a Porsche Cayman is never going to look right. So, what’s the solution to this conundrum, enter the super saloons… BMW M5 The latest incarnation of the M5 should be on sale by the time you read this for a price of around £80,000, which is a fair chunk of change in anyone’s book, but the new model does pack in a few additions over its predecessor. Styling wise, the changes over the standard 5-series are pretty subtle compared to its forefathers, a more aggressive front bumper being the most noticeable of the changes.

Practically wise, there are no compromises over the standard 5-series. The cabin is spacious and three adults wouldn’t be uncomfortable in the back and the boot is the same size as the standard saloon.

Under the bonnet is a 4.4 V8 putting out a shade under 600bhp but the biggest advancement for the new M5 is the drivetrain. For the first time the M5 comes with a 4-wheel-drive system. Before the purists start an e-petition though, it’s only a part time system which kicks in when it senses the front wheels have lost grip and can be overridden completely back to rear-wheel-drive only by selecting ‘track’ mode. 24

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Driving is equally innocuous around town where the light burble from the V8 hums gently and the suspension can be put into comfort mode to waft over the craters that British roads can offer. But once the road

opens up and you plant your foot on the loud peddle, that’s when the fun starts. Through the bends the new M5 handles like a car half its weight and the new all-wheel-drive system kicks in at just the right time, feeling like the aid it should be rather an imposition. Would I buy one with my own money? Well, yes in heartbeat if I had a budget of around £90,000. It’s a better looking, quicker and has far more street cred than its rivals from either Audi or Mercedes.

KIA STIN G E R G T S When thinking of luxury super saloons, Kia may not be the first brand which springs to mind but the ambitious Korean outfit have conquered the mid-range sector with good looking, reliable cars with extended warranties and competitive pricing and now they want to take the game to the Germans.

usual gizmos and touchscreens associated with any luxury car is present, a new one for me is the presence of what Kia calls its “active sound system” which delivers the engine note through the car stereo which can then be adjusted by the driver. Personally I’d rather stick with the old window-down or up approach but I’m guessing it’s something extra to brag to friends about. Whilst I’ve always admired Kia for their consumer friendly approach, I have never found their offerings to be anything special out on the open road. Until now that is. The Stinger GT-S is a revelation. Kia’s first rear-wheel-drive car, in the UK at least, feels planted, confident and best of all eager when driven with gusto. The cabin, even with the engine noise replacing Radio 1, feels calm and serine, even when pushing close to the limits of adhesion.

No-one expects that the Stinger GT-S to challenge the M5 or its Germanic rivals, but what it does do if offer a viable suitable alternative because whilst its only half the money, its much, much more than half as good.

Mark D’Apice

The new Stinger range has the usual offerings of a 2-0 litre petrol and 2.2-diesel but it’s the 3.3-litre twin turbo V6 GT-S model we are focussing on here. Delivering 365bhp may not immediately make you think of this in the same category as the afore-mentioned M5 but at less than have the list price, it will definitely makes those at the back sit up and pay attention. Available now for at a list price of a shade over £40k, the Stinger GTS packs in an extraordinary amount of kit. Whilst the www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Plan your Big Day for less... We’ve put together some money saving tips and ideas, which will help you to plan your big day for less, without compromising on STYLE...

START WITH THE VENUE Most wedding venues and even some wedding suppliers will give you a generous discount if you avoid peak times of year. Getting hitched mid-week can also cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half. D.I.Y Save a fortune by making your own invitations, decorations and favours. Handmade is very much the trend these days. We love Hobby Craft’s ideas library (hobbycraft.co.uk), which has hundreds of DIY craft ideas and step-by-step guides. Pinterest is another fantastic and easy-to-use website and app for DIY inspiration and mood boards. PICK SEASONAL BLOOMS Flowers will be significantly cheaper if they are in season. It’s also becoming popular for bridesmaids to wear wrist corsages, which often work out cheaper than bridesmaid bouquets. The bridesmaids have the advantage of having their hands free whilst still wearing flowers that complement the bridal look. SHOP LOCALLY Keep an eye out for local sales and special offers. Independent retailers and service providers greatly value your support and will often go that extra mile to make sure you have the perfect wedding day.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Keep in mind that you don’t need to stick to convention or have everything you’re told you need. Do things a little differently… have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal or make a playlist of your favourite songs instead of booking a band or DJ. HONEYMOON FUND Instead of wedding gifts, politely request that your guests contribute towards your honeymoon fund. Many couples are already living together when they decide to get married, so pots & pans and tea towels aren’t always the best idea. Sun, sea and sand definitely is! 34

Miss Lancashire dances in grandma’s footsteps When Lancashire lass Ellé Finch was just three years old, her grandmother decided to teach her some basic ballet steps. That’s when Ellé first got the showbusiness “bug” and ever since she’s been following in Grandma Audrey’s footsteps – or rather dance steps. Grandma’s encouragement and stories of her life as a professional dancer touring the UK sparked a love of dance, acting and singing in her granddaughter, who went on to study performing arts at Pendleton Sixth Form College, Salford. Now, while 20-year-old Ellé hones her skills with regular acting and singing classes, and working as an extra in programmes such as Hollyoaks, Cold Feet, Coronation Street and Our Girl, she is especially busy this year as the reigning Miss Lancashire, with an assured place in the Miss England finals in September. Ellé, who won the Miss Junior Bury title in her home town when she was 15, says: “As a family, we were a bit apprehensive at first. Dad was worried that a beauty pageant might be bitchy. But, it’s none of those things. The contests aren’t really a pageant, the other girls are lovely and certainly not bitchy and it’s not even about looks. It’s so much more. I’ve made some good friends with the other young women and the experience is such a boost for confidence and, for example, improving your ability to speak in public. And it’s good fun.” The Miss England contest organisers promote their event as a celebration of the achievements of women and a recognition of positive role models to inspire others – and Ellé certainly fits the bill already, both as an inspiration and a role model, especially in promoting local charities.

frequently helping out at soup kitchens and homeless centres. One charitable cause close to her heart is the Sanctuary Trust in Rochdale, which helps homeless people. Ellé says: “Providing people with food, warm clothes and shelter for the night is all well and good but, if you are sleeping rough because you have no home, you can’t get registered with a doctor, so can’t get medical help when you need it.” The charity is involved in a scheme to encourage GP surgeries strive to be

She says: “I have been involved with several charities for a while now, but when it comes to asking companies or other organisations for help or donations, being Miss Lancashire – instead of just being me – makes all the difference. The title provides a platform and profile which can be very useful in furthering charitable causes.” Not that her organising and publicity skills keep her from getting down to the grass roots of charity work,

“homeless friendly” to ensure that they can offer medical help and advice when needed to homeless people. Ellé says of the dream that her singing, dancing and acting skills will lead to a career in entertainment: “I owe such a lot to Grandma Audrey for introducing me to dance – and taking me to buy my first pair of ballet shoes – and for her encouragement throughout the years.” Sadly, Audrey Finch passed away in 2015, aged 81. Born Audrey Howarth in Rochdale, she had her heart set on dancing from her teenage years. Leaving her job in a laboratory, she joined a touring dance company and spent many years on stage, appearing with such stars of the day as David Whitfield, Dickie Valentine, Frankie Vaughan, Norman Evans and Stanley Baxter. It was while appearing in a theatre variety show that she met her husband, Norman, who was a singer. They lived in London after their marriage, then moved to Heywood. But dancing stayed in Audrey’s blood and she opened a dance school for youngsters locally. Not surprisingly, Ellé also finds time to teach little ones the basics of ballet at weekends.

The highest standards of service and care The loss of a loved one is one of the most painful and difficult experiences of our lives. At that sad and difficult time, your choice of funeral director is one of the most important decisions you will make Cottage Funeral Service and Spotland Bridge Funeral Service have been serving their local communities for generations and offer local families the highest levels of customer care, professional advice and sympathetic assistance with all the practical arrangements that need to be made for a funeral. Dignity funeral directors also offer Dignity funeral plans, funeral plans were first introduced in the UK in 1985 and to date, over 1.1 million people have purchased a funeral plan from a registered FPA provider.

Dignity Funeral Plans is the first UK organisation to be independently awarded the BSI Kitemark for customer service. The BSI Kitemark requires an organisation or department to undergo rigorous and independent assessment and witness testing to make sure it meets the relevant British and International standards. Dignity funeral plans are not those of a third party that many funeral directors offer. All plans are protected by the Funeral Plan Association and all fees are kept in the safety of a trust fund until required. “One in five of the funerals we conduct have already been pre-arranged and paid for.” explains Area Manager, Ann-Marie Studd. “People often purchase a funeral plan to make sure their loved ones don’t have to make difficult decisions about their funeral arrangements. THE ROCHDALE HANGMAN JOHN ELLIS

In 1901 John Ellis received a letter which was to change his life forever. It was to inform him that his application to become a hangman had been successful. In his typical, reserved way he had not informed his family of his intentions. “The Rochdale Hangman” as he was to be known was born in Broad lane, Balderstone in 1874, one of six children of hard working parents. His father owned a barbers shop on Oldham Road. John chose to work in a mill, before succumbing to a back injury and eventually becoming a barber himself at 451 Oldham Road.

wife. He was hung by Ellis on 23rd November 1910 at Pentonville.

Strangeways on 27th February 1906 with Ellis as assistant executioner.

Closer to home was a murder in neighbouring Shaw. One evening on 19th February 1905, 17 year old Kate Garrity went out to fetch a jug of beer. She was found strangled in a lane the next morning. Her former boyfriend, 19 year old John Griffiths was found guilty.

Another local case was that of easy going barman Walter Martyn, aged 23, who was courting a single mother, Edith Griffiths of Adelaide Street, Heywood. They were planning to get a house together. On 28th September 1911 they went walking in Plumpton Wood, Heywood. He emerged, alone and went to the Black Bull where he worked telling the landlord that Edith was dead. Her body was next to the river, strangled. They had

The evidence was, largely , circumstantial and a reprieve was recommended. This did not arrive and John Griffiths was hung at

In his capacity as hangman John travelled from Rochdale by train to prisons such as Pentonville and Newgate. By law, he arrived a day prior to execution in order to ensure that the gallows were fit for use. He would stay overnight within the prison and was fastidious in ensuring that the victim suffered no discomfort or duress at the moment of execution. As assistant to the chief executioner, William Billington, his pay was £2 2s but this rose to £10 plus expenses when he, eventually, took over the role. Ellis went on to be involved in 203 executions, 160 as main hangman. Many cases throughout his career were high profile and highly publicised. The case of Dr Crippen is well known, even today. The public took great interest in the daily news of a high speed chase by liner across the Atlantic to arrest Crippen and his younger lover on the Ontario quayside for the murder of his 46

argued when he said he was going to Manchester for a better paid job and in a temper she threatened to find another man. He grabbed her by the throat, unintentionally killing her. Walter Martyn was hanged by Ellis at Strangeways on 12th December 1911. One execution is said to have had a huge effect on Ellis. On January 9th, 1923 he hung Edith Thompson. Though married and aged 28 she had a brief affair with 19 year old Freddie Bywaters. Whilst she was out with her husband, Bywaters jumped out of a dark doorway and stabbed Percy Thompson to death. They were both found guilty but a reprieve was expected for Edith. It was great shock when this didn’t happen. Ellis did not relish hanging a woman. Ellis, unusually, was allocated two assistants and both were needed to support Edith as she stepped towards the gallows. She was sobbing and in such a fearful state that she could not walk unaided. This execution badly affected all who were there and though Ellis had efficiently completed the execution, he was left deeply troubled. After completing another 11 executions, in 1924 he gave his resignation after 23 years. People were always curious about details of the murder cases and tried to prise details out of him at his shop which he found difficult to deal with. He was approached many times from publications interested in his stories, eventually accepting an offer from “Thompson’s Weekly News” to serialise his memoirs. He also related his life’s experiences in a book published after his death, “Diary of a Hangman”. Nine months after his resignation, drinking heavily and withdrawn, on the evening of 24th August 1924 he shot himself with a revolver in an attempted suicide. An attending constable took him to Rochdale Infirmary. Ellis was treated for a broken jaw.

Because of his previous service and good standing in the community he was only issued with a warning by the Magistrate. There were large crowds inside and out of the court. Three years later Ellis agreed to be in a play about a notorious 19th century criminal. In “The Life and Adventures of Charlie Peace” he was the main attraction playing the hangman. The play was thought to be in bad taste by the public and closed after a week. The actor playing Charlie Peace said it was a “chilling experience” to have a noose put on by an actual executioner! The props were sold though Ellis kept the gallows. He donated his share of money to poor children. He would always readily help others. He then gave demonstrations at fairgrounds and seaside resorts. This was to be a short experience, too, as his health deteriorated.

He was described as a cool and efficient executioner by the Prison Service and had introduced many improvements through the years but always inclined to worry. Eventually and tragically his inner “demons” led him to seek peace by claiming his own life. Paul Brady

Now aged 57 he was drinking heavily, depressed and ill with his financial situation also of concern. On the evening of Tuesday 20th September 1932 he got his razor down from the shelf and after chasing his terrified wife, Annie, out of the house he cut his own throat. She said that he had “gone mad”. Over a hundred people attended his funeral service at St. Mary’s, Balderstone with 300 attending the burial service at Rochdale Cemetery though there was no communication from the Home Office. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

ROCHDALE RSPCA NEWS & EVENTS Exciting changes

We must begin 2018 by thanking all our fantastic supporters without whom we would be unable to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome those poor animals of Rochdale who need our help. We took in a total of 427 in 2017 and currently have over 60 animals in our care who are looking for new loving homes. If you feel you could offer one of them a home please call into the Animal Centre during opening hours when our staff will be happy to show you around. Our new car park (entrance on High Street) is now in use. This and the dog exercise area were completed before Christmas and we now look forward to further improvements to our facilities in the animal centre in 2018.

Wildlife

As reported in the last issue, the animal centre has recently become a holding centre for wildlife. This important work has continued and we have already taken in over 100 animals and birds including owls, swans, geese, hedgehogs and recently an otter. Without this work in Rochdale many of these wonderful creatures would not have survived.

Thank you...

To Pets at Home Rochdale, Esther Marie Photography, The Italian Job, Abby Rose Holistic Therapies, The Cedar Tree Tapas Restaurant, The Beauty Spot, Delta Force Paintball, Thamin Restaurant and the Waterfall Tearoom for their support. Without this local support from the community and businesses we would not be able to continue our animal welfare work. Thank you also to Doherty Integrated Fire & Security, who saw our facebook post about our recent shop break-ins and installed an alarm and security system at the Middleton shop free of charge.

Happy endings

Puppies Holly, Joseph and Jack Frost We are so pleased that all the surviving puppies are happily settled in their new homes and growing well. We are so sorry that we were unable to save Tiny Tim and Eve who we loved and took to our hearts, but it’s thanks to the dedication of our staff and our vets that the remaining three, who had such a bad start in life, made it through. Many thanks also to our supporters who gave generously - whether it was money towards their vet fees, puppy food, puppy pads and toys. We really appreciate how everyone rallied round when we needed it.

Seasonal Advice for Spring

In the last issue we reported on Oscar the ginger cat. Poor Oscar had to have a leg amputated as a result of being in an accident. We are happy to report he has recovered well and has gone to his forever home. 50

dinner appeal for £1’ raised £1,200. A big thanks also to all at Wendy Lane Vets for their support; they sold £224 worth of dinners.

In spring the RSPCA receives many enquiries about ‘abandoned’ baby animals such as fox and badger cubs and fledgling birds. In most cases the parents are nearby and our advice is to leave them alone unless obviously injured. Check our website, www.rspca-rochdale. org.uk, to find the link to the national RSPCA website where you will find more detailed seasonal advice and information on all types of wildlife.

Successful Christmas Appeal

We couldn’t have done it without your support. We are sometimes overwhelmed at the generosity of people who love animals as we do. The appeal allowed every one of the animals in our care to have their own presents. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped us during the difficult winter period. The ‘Buy an Animal a Christmas www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

We are desperately in need of stock for all of our shops, especially furniture and household items. We always need donations of clothing, bric-a-brac, books, music, etc so please dig deep into your wardrobes and cupboards and find those items you haven’t worn or used for years! Have a post-Christmas clearout of clothes that are too big or too small, ornaments you are tired of, and previously unused or unsuitable gifts. Bring them along to your nearest RSPCA Rochdale branch charity shop or to the Rochdale Animal Centre. If you have large items, too many bags to carry, or can’t get out, we’ll gladly pick them up. Our shops, opening times and telephone numbers are on the ‘Charity Shops’ page of our website. To arrange a collection please ring our driver on 07825 618181 or email sm.rspcarochdale@ btconnect.com. PAN SEARED BRILL WITH CORAL CRUMB WITH HERITAGE CAULIFLOWER SALAD

Andrew Nutter CELEBRITY CHEF

Most people discard the orange roe ‘Coral’ attached to a scallop – but it is actually edible. I fry them in garlic oil adding them to a traditional fish pie or as in this recipe to a beautiful crumb that can be scattered over most fish dishes to give that extra depth of flavour and texture. Serves 4 Coral Crumb 1 tablespoon olive oil 100g coral trimmings 2 cloves garlic – roughly chopped 25g parmesan cheese 50g white breadcrumbs knob of butter splash of olive oil Cauliflower Salad 1 Romanesque – blanched 1 small purple cauliflower – blanched 1 small white cauliflower – blanched 100ml salad dressing squeeze of fresh lemon Fish 1 tablespoon olive oil 4x 180g fillets of brill 56

1. For the coral crumb – mix together the olive oil, coral and garlic, season well then roast in hot oven 180oC for 4 minutes or until cooked through. Leave to cool. 2. In a food processor place the parmesan, breadcrumbs and cooked coral, pulse a few times with the butter and oil until it resembles a coarse crumb. Season. 3. Cut the blanched cauliflower into small florets, mix with some of the salad dressing and season. Spoon the remainder on individual plates. 4. When ready to serve, heat a non stick pan, add the olive oil and seal the brill until a light golden. Turn over – seal then scatter with some of the crumb. Place under a hot grill for 2-3 minutes until lightly toasted. 5. Place the brill on top of the cauliflower and finish with a generous squeeze of lemon. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

ROCHDALE’S MAN OF THE YEAR

Rochdale’s very own singing jeweller, John Alexander was delighted to be named Rochdale Man of the Year 2017 in recognition of his remarkable fundraising work. John was presented with the Man of the Year trophy by last year’s winner Alan Wrigley at The Men of

Rochdale Luncheon at Rochdale Town Hall. John commented, “It’s a great honour to receive the award and I certainly didn’t expect it, I was completely blown away!”

John had always wanted to sing but only took it up seriously around five years ago. Since then, his voice

has helped to raise many thousands of pounds for worthwhile charities throughout the borough, particularly Springhill Hospice of whom he is a huge supporter. Last year he organised an exciting Music Festival at

Rochdale Town Hall which raised much needed funds for the hospice, along with East Lancashire Masonic

Charity, Dementia UK and Moorlands Children’s Home. John commented “Singing is something I really enjoy and I believe I should do whatever I can to help others. I will continue to do all I can to raise more money for these worthwhile charities in the future”.

John has become something of a social media sensation, often entertaining his followers by posting videos of himself singing in his living room or around Rochdale.

THE STYLE TEAM WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE JOHN ON THIS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD WHICH IS VERY WELL DESERVED. 60

THEATRE REVIEW: ‘A MONTH OF SUNDAYS’ by St Ann’s Players St Ann’s players latest production ‘A Month Of Sunday’s’ by Bob Larbey, proved to be a bold decision with its synopsis revolving around mental deterioration. However, the boldest decision fell to Dave Stopford in taking on the mammoth leading role of Cooper. He was hardly off stage throughout the production and was excellent throughout, maintaining his complex characterisation. He was surrounded as per usual by a strong cast. No more so than Ian Mansfield as his fellow resident Aylott. Cooper rails against his ageing body, but remains proud of not having “lost his marbles”, while his friend Aylott is increasingly concerned about losing his wit. Described as a “bit of a double act”, the duo entertain each other, get up to mischief and have lots of fun. Author Bob Larbey better known for writing sitcoms like The Good Life explores themes of physical and mental capacity which many in the audience 62

could relate to. We are told time after time by medical experts that to keep the mind active is key – and so it is that Cooper and Aylott play chess and try to remember all eleven members of the Middlesex 1947 cricket team. They can only get to ten though… in the meantime they flirt with the nurses and have also formed an ‘escape committee’ in an effort to get out of the rest home. Their daily routine is broken up by awkward visits from Cooper’s younger www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

family members Annette Nodwell and Tim Keiley who seem to make any excuse to leave just a few minutes after arriving. There are also some lovely sensitive moments between Nurse Wilson and Cooper played by Joanne Frost. Complimenting the strong cast, Sue Howarth played her part as Mrs Baker in this very thought provoking, moving as well as funny production under the excellent direction of David Fielding. RO C H DA L E’S G OT TA L E N T Rochdale Town Hall recently played host to Rochdale’s Got Talent in aid of Mayor’s Councillor Ian Duckworth’s charity appeal. There were 11 exceptional acts and the panel of judges included Hollyoaks actor Ben-Ryan Davies and professional dancer Lizzie Stavrou who commented after each act performed. However, it was left to the audience present on the night to choose a winner. The chosen winners were dance group Ochos Argentinas with joint runners up 14 year old vocalist Kendra Marshall and Rochdale Youth Brass Band. YOUNGSTERS TAKE TO THE PITCH TO TACKLE HATE CRIME Young Rochdalians showed hate crime the red card at a special football tournament to celebrate Hate Crime Awareness Week. The tournament, held at Rochdale Leisure Centre, saw neighbourhood officers, youth services, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and young people coming together to play football matches, learn about hate crime and build positive relationships. Seventy young people aged between 12 and 16-years-old attended the event, which aimed to provide a fun and safe platform for them to express their feelings, voice their concerns and speak to police officers about any issues they may be facing.

These schemes ranged from information stalls to coffee mornings, film screenings and drama workshops but will all have a positive impact on local communities within the borough of Rochdale. The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Ian Duckworth, said: “Bringing our communities together is extremely important and I’m so pleased that our young people are leading the way in tackling unacceptable prejudices and hostility towards people because of who they are. We do not tolerate hate crime and I hope this great work will continue to support our overall aim of creating a safer and stronger borough for everyone.” For more information about hate crime and how to report it in Greater Manchester visit www.letsendhatecrime.com

As well as the football tournament the event, organised Rochdale Youth Services, Empowering Minds and the Subsist Youth and Community Group, provided the young people with information on the various strands of hate crime, different types of hate incidents and what to do should they ever witness one. Councillor Kieran Heakin, the council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Football has the power to unite people so I was pleased to see youngsters from different backgrounds coming together to discuss such an important topic and share their views. I hope that now our young people know that hate crime is wrong and how they should report it, they’ll pass this important message on and continue to kick it out throughout future generations until it’s stopped altogether.” The youth football tournament was just 1 of 11 community schemes that received Hate Crime Awareness Week grant funding from Rochdale Borough Council to help raise awareness of what hate crime is, increase hate crime reporting and celebrate diversity in the borough’s communities.
