New Festival of Ideas announced for Rochdale A major new six day festival will be staged in Rochdale next year, accompanying the official re-opening of Rochdale Town Hall in March 2024. The ‘Rochdale Borough Festival of Ideas’ will run from Monday 4 to Saturday 9 March, promising a showcase of creativity, innovation and performance around the themes of imagine, create, discover. The line-up is yet to be confirmed but expect visual arts, music, electrifying live performances, interactive installations and lots more, as originality and imagination is celebrated. Taking inspiration from the borough's rich heritage whilst remaining future focussed, there will be a blend of hands-on and digital programming and many events will be free to attend. The re-launched Rochdale Town Hall will be one of a host of festival venues across the borough. Its major restoration has been funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Rochdale Borough Council.
Councillor Janet Emsley, the council’s cabinet member for equity, safety and reform, said the new festival will be an opportunity to be inspired, engaged, and entertained: "Rochdale Borough Festival of Ideas will provide a platform for curious minds to explore and discover, with lots of family friendly events running throughout and a dedicated schools programme. The borough is a place for innovation, from the first co-op to the new Atom Valley. "This festival will raise the profile and reputation of Rochdale borough across the UK arts, culture and events scene. I hope it will raise cultural ambition, local pride and attract new audiences too. Importantly, the festival will include a momentous moment to celebrate the re-opening of Rochdale Town Hall, a hub for ideas and conversation as it throws open its doors and becomes accessible to all." BEAM WITH CONFIDENCE! LOOSE, FAILING OR MISSING TEETH? DON'T LIKE DENTURES?
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL PROCESS FOR IMPLANT TREATMENT?
DR ANDREW PARASHCHAK PROVIDES A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO DENTAL IMPLANTS... WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?
Initially a consultation visit is made where you can discuss your needs and perform a detailed examination of your mouth. We would also take any X rays or other records at this stage. Following a 3D Xray (CBCT scan) taken in house, we would proceed to the surgery. After a healing period of approximately 3 months, your implant(s) will be restored with a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment is usually completed in around 4 and 12 months depending on complexity.
A dental implant is the most tooth like replacement for a missing tooth. They can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The titanium implant is a bit like a screw and is surgically placed in the jawbone, replacing the tooth root, and is attached to a dental crown, bridge or denture depending on your individual needs.
HOW LONG WILL AN IMPLANT LAST?
WHO CAN HAVE DENTAL IMPLANTS? Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible for dental implant treatment to restore their smile, provided they are in good general and dental health and have adequate remaining jawbone. Even where bone loss has occurred we have procedures which can help rebuild it. There is no upper age limit for dental implant treatment. In-fact, in patients struggling to eat and speak with loose conventional dentures, implant solutions are life changing.
You can expect your dental implant solution to survive up to 25 years depending on maintenance of excellent oral hygiene regime, good general health and regular review with your dentist and hygienist. Implants, like teeth need to be maintained, as they can be susceptible to gum disease.

IAN
HENDERSON Ian Henderson has been a stalwart of Rochdale AFC since first joining the club in 2013. The 38-year-old is Rochdale's all-time leading goalscorer and well on his way to equalling Reg Jenkins' historic appearance record too! He's been in, he's been out, but he's back again to help Rochdale return to the football league. Style caught up with the centre-forward to discuss two decades on the field... Henderson during his first home match for the club
Who/what first inspired your football career? Tommy, my older brother, has been a constant source of inspiration for me. Even though he is no longer with us, his influence continues to drive me forward. Since Rochdale’s unfortunate relegation to the National League, how do you feel the team has done so far and what hopes do you have for the rest of the season? This season has been marked by stages of success for the team. We collectively recognise that both the team and the squad are still a work in progress, but we're confident that we will continue to improve as the season unfolds. Our mindset and attitude revolve around a commitment to constant development, both on and off the pitch. If we maintain this focus and bring consistency to our performances, we believe we'll be in a strong position by the end of the season. You returned to Rochdale after a few difficult years for the club during and post lockdown - what is it about Rochdale that keeps you coming back? Since the day I first joined Rochdale, I've experienced a genuine sense of acceptance and support from the fans, my fellow players, and the entire staff, and this is a significant reason why I chose to come back.
12 | Rochdale Style
Above all else, my happiness here plays a crucial role in my decision-making process. It's a driving force that enables me to approach the game with the same joy and enthusiasm I had as a child. I believe that this happiness has been reflected in my performances over the years, and I've been able to create magical moments that both the fans and the teams I've been a part of can enjoy. Having beaten the all time goalscoring record for Rochdale AFC, what are you hoping to achieve personally now in your career? That's a great question! Looking ahead, there are a couple of personal goals I have in mind. First and foremost, I aspire to stay injury-free so that I can fully enjoy the twilight years of my career and continue to give my absolute best for the team. Secondly, on a more personal note, I'm driven by my family, especially my two boys, Hughie and Henri, to watch me playing, scoring goals, and pursuing my passion. Your role has changed over the years to now being a veteran of the team - what advice do you give to younger players coming through? I firmly believe that actions speak louder than words...
Every day, I aim to lead by example, showing up with my best self and giving my all on the pitch... there's always room to grow and evolve in this game and in life. You’ve played under many managers at Rochdale - Keith Hill, Brian Barry Murphy, Jim Bentley, and now Jimmy McNulty - in what ways have they influenced you as a player and person? I had the privilege of spending a significant amount of time under Keith Hill's management, and he has been, and still is, a crucial mentor in my career. I owe him a great deal for the trust he placed in me, giving me the freedom and opportunity to play upfront and eventually lead the team as captain. From the moment we started working together, there was a mutual understanding, and we experienced the most successful period in the club's history during that time. I have nothing but respect for him. Brian and Jimmy have also played influential roles in shaping me into a more well-rounded player. They've guided me in adapting to various formations and styles of play and encouraged me to view the game through the lens of each player. They have been invaluable to my growth as a player and as a person. (continued...)
Henderson celebrating his first ever goal for Rochdale AFC

(...continued)
What are some of your most memorable moments in football? Winning promotion to the Premier League with Norwich City and achieving promotion with Rochdale to League One have undoubtedly been the standout moments in my career. Among the unforgettable highlights are the memories of making my debut, a moment that will forever hold a special place in my heart, and the incredible experience of stepping onto the hallowed turf of Old Trafford to face Manchester United and taking on Tottenham and Leeds. These matches against top-tier opponents are reminders of the remarkable journey and opportunities that football has brought into my life. Outside of football, how do you switch off? Being with my partner, Nicola, and my two boys provides me with a valuable escape from the demands of football and business. It's during these moments that I can truly switch off and immerse myself in family life. When I'm not with them, I enjoy playing golf, tennis, and table tennis. Additionally, I have a passion for reading, which allows me to explore new worlds and ideas beyond the football field.

Why making a Will should be your New Year's resolution Making a Will could be the most important New Year's resolution you ever make and it’s one you can easily keep with the help of Wills & Wishes Legal. Rochdale’s very own Will Lady, Fiona Daly, is helping local people and their families to have peace of mind by simplifying the process. Since launching her business in February 2021, Fiona has gained over 95 Google five star reviews due to the fantastic service she provides. Here are six reasons why you should prioritise making a Will as you welcome in the New Year...
1. First and foremost, having a Will provides you with
peace of mind. It ensures that your wishes are respected when you pass away. You get to decide how your assets, belongings, and finances are distributed. This means you have the power to protect your family's financial security and wellbeing.
2. A Will also allows you to specify guardianship for your children (if under 18). This is crucial, as it ensures that your children will be cared for by individuals you trust. This is often difficult for parents to think about but you are the best person to make that decision, rather than the courts.
3. Making a Will can help your family avoid legal
complications. When a person dies without a Will, their estate typically goes through a probate process, which can be lengthy and expensive. Probate can also lead to family disputes. By creating a Will, you can streamline the process, reduce costs, and minimise the potential for family conflicts.
4. You can leave a lasting, positive impact on the world by supporting charities, organisations, or individuals that are important to you and including them as a beneficiary.
5.
Another important aspect of making a Will is its adaptability. Life is full of changes, such as marriage, the birth of children, or acquiring new assets. Your Will should change with your circumstances to remain current and effective. Setting it as a New Year's resolution reminds you to review and update it when necessary.
6. Perhaps one of the most emotionally significant
reasons to make a Will is that it reduces stress on your loved ones during an already challenging time. The grieving process is difficult enough without the added burden of navigating legal matters. Creating a Will is a loving and considerate act that eases the burden on your family. Making a Will doesn't have to be a daunting task. Setting it as a New Year's resolution can motivate you to take this important step toward providing for your family's future. Are you ready to make your Will? Fiona is ready to help you and can be contacted via the details below. Fiona worked as a solicitor for 20 years and is a member of The Society of Will Writers. Her jargon-free, straightforward process is completed in a matter of weeks in your own home with flexible appointments including daytime, evenings and weekends. GOOGLE 5 STAR CLIENT REVIEW... "My wife and I had been putting off preparing a Will for several years. Legal jargon and solicitors putting us off. Eventually we were given Fiona's name at Wills And Wishes. Fiona visited our home on two occasions. It was as simple as could be. Fiona was professional, to the point, put us at ease, and now having made our Wills we are so more relaxed and certain about the future. Great service."- Alan and Christine

WINTER WALKS
along the edge of the water and through some beautiful woodland. The walk is flat, but is almost 3 miles long - so a bit longer than some other options (so better to tire the kids out, but more likely to trigger the moans about tired legs).
WATERGROVE RESERVOIR • Wardle, Rochdale • Car park at the top of a cobbled lane at OL12 9PL • Although a very short part of this walk is do-able with a pram (up the right hand-side), in order to get all the way round you will DEFINITELY need a carrier… there’s cobbles, stiles and steps to contend with! • A dogs paradise (although watch out for deer!)
CLOWBRIDGE RESERVOIR
If you fancy a walk in Rochdale, but without the hustle and bustle that often comes with Hollingworth Lake... try Watergrove Reservoir, situated at the top of Wardle Village. It has such a rural feel, partly because there are no facilities, and offers spectacular views. There is so much to explore up at Watergrove… especially if you deviate away from the main circular route (which is about 2 miles)… including paths up into the hills, ruins of an old village and a boardwalk across a pond… We just love it up here!
This is a lovely little circular walk of about 2 miles… but you could extend your adventure by visiting the nearby Singing Ringing Tree. There are plenty of ducks to spot, sailing boats to see and stone throwing opportunities!
ENTWISTLE RESERVOIR • Entwistle, Bolton • There are a couple of car parks just off Batridge Road, BL7 OLU • I have taken a pram around • Dog friendly
Entwistle Reservoir might be a bit further out, but it is worth the drive. It is a stunning reservoir, with paths both Entwistle Reservoir
Entwistle Reservoir
• Clow Bridge, Burnley • We parked on Limey Lane (BB11 5NT), but there is also a car park just off Manchester Road (BB11 5PF) • The path is pram-able, but a bit bumpy in places • There are no dogs allowed on the perimeter path
BAITINGS RESERVOIR • Ripponden, West Yorkshire • There is a car park just off Rochdale Road, HX6 4LL • Totally doable with a pram • A lovely dog walk, although there is a tiny section where you walk along a road
A family favourite whatever the season, but a particularly good one in winter as it’s so easy and so short, being just under 1.5 miles around! Bluebird Care Rochdale - supporting the community REAL LIFE STORIES: MEET ELSIE Ninety-five-year-old Elsie, has been a customer of Bluebird Care Rochdale for over twelve months. She's like a After being diagnosed with Alzheimers, Elsie’s family bag of Bluebird gold. Care for approached some much-needed support – although with some hesitation as they knew full well that Elsie was very strong-willed and wasn’t at all keen on the idea! It hasn’t been plain sailing but Bluebird Care and Elsie’s family have worked together and are happy to say Elsie is now thriving. Elsie’s grandaughter, Kate, spoke to us about her grandmother’s care… Why did you first approach Bluebird Care Rochdale? My grandmother had become very unwell and had to be admitted to hospital after we realised she was forgetting to eat and drink. After she was discharged we looked at different options but soon realised that - as a small family who live quite far away - we were out of our depth. We realised we couldn’t support her on a daily basis as much as she needed and reached out to Bluebird Care Rochdale. Although, I should say this first step was daunting, as my grandmother has always been fiercely independent and was against having any sort of support. But we knew it was the right thing for her and was the only way she could stay in her own home as she wanted. How has the last 12 months been?
Are you and the family happy that you took that first step by approaching Bluebird Care Rochdale? Absolutely! They’ve given our family so much peace of mind and reassurance. It means we don’t have to worry about Elsie 24/7 and also means that the time we spend with her is quality family time and not just focused on ‘care’. The family portal allows us to log in and check how she is each day. Even simple things like bringing the milk in, putting the television on or putting the bins out help us so much, as well as the more important tasks such as helping to prepare her meals and ensuring she takes her medication. Bluebird Care Rochdale has allowed my grandmother to remain her own home which we really hope is where she’ll be able to stay - a home she has lived in for 60 years and is filled with memories of children, grandchildren and great grandchild, as well as her beloved late husband. Having Care Assistants hasn't taken away her independence - it's allowed her to keep it.
Have you ever thought about a career in care? Bluebird Care Rochdale is always looking for kind, compassionate, reliable, dedicated individuals to join its amazing team. In return, the company offer full training, a friendly, supportive working environment and an extremely fulfilling role making a difference to people's lives. " Working in the care sector is incredibly rewarding. Bluebird Care Rochdale has a fantastic reputation, and I am proud to be a part of an organisation that prioritises the well-being of both its staff and customers. Together, we will continue to provide exceptional care and support, ensuring that everyone we serve can live a fulfilling and independent life." - Amie

SPECTACULAR PAVING ARTWORK UNVEILED A stunning carpet of new paving has been unveiled at the Town Hall Square in Rochdale, as restoration of this magnificent building continues. Central to the piece are five paving stones etched with intricate designs, created by local artist, Vic Whitaker, otherwise known as Doodlher. The carpet of paving stretches from the grade I listed war memorial and memorial gardens to the town hall entrance and will be framed by lawned areas and trees. As well as creating a stunning outdoor space for relaxation and events, the redevelopment of the square will complement the town hall, which is currently undergoing an extensive restoration funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the council. Each of the five illustrations on the carpet of paving represent a theme inspired by the interior decor, history, and memories of Rochdale Town Hall. Vic carried out broad research and worked with local community groups and volunteers to create the designs. 28 | Rochdale Style
Vic Whitaker said: “The town hall has always been really important to me. It’s beautiful, inside and out, and as an illustrator it’s always fascinated me. So when I was asked to get involved in this project, I jumped at the chance.
site of the Cenotaph). The martlet represents a plucky attitude towards life where achievements are gained through self- driven actions, and not a birth-given right.
"Exploring the town hall and untangling the secrets of its interior decor has been a real adventure into its history and design. I hope that my artwork encourages others to step inside and hunt down the imagery that inspired the artwork.” Vic shared more information about the complex designs with Style... INDUSTRY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP Vic said this piece represents: "Rochdale’s industrial strength, its coat of arms and how the two came to be represented in the Town Hall decor... A fleece is suspended from a millrind by torse. Beneath the fleece is a woolpack. "Two martlets fly above. Martlets can be found in the decor throughout the Town Hall... In the Rochdale coat of arms, the martlets originate from the Dearden family who acquired the Rochdale Manor in 1823 (now the

brave ‘fire bobby’. He wears a Victorian firefighter’s helmet and carries a pair of police shackles on his belt. He represents the fire and police service who were based at the Town Hall.
THE FUTURE
"The dragon’s tail points to the metal goblet that was forged from the molten remains of the original tower’s bell. Books and documents fall from the sky to the right of the tower.
Vic said: "The Town Hall’s decor showcases Rochdale’s view of itself in the arena of global commerce. A docked trading ship sits at the centre of the image atop the parallels and meridians of a globe. "A roll of cloth sits at the bottom of the image from which two vines of flora grow: one a cotton plant, featured heavily throughout the Town Hall’s decor; the other a grapevine, harder to find but still featured inside, it’s the perfect representation for fertility, cultivation and growth of the town, even today.
"At the tower’s base was the original library and town-clerk offices. Many documents were lost in the fire, despite the efforts of brave officers and town hall workers who entered the burning building to rescue them. "The rose that grows around the design is taken from the former Magistrate’s Court." A GREAT HALL
Vic shared: "The Great Hall is perhaps one of the most jaw-dropping spaces within the Town Hall. It is a place of kings and queens but intended for the people of Rochdale. This design aims to symbolise the people’s memory of the Great Hall."
"The design depicts the events of the clock tower fire. Although the true cause of this fire was never determined, in this design we can see that it seems to be the dragon who is to blame. "St George and his dragon featured on the spire of the original tower. In this design, St George plays the role of the
"The roots of the flowers are a network representing technology and innovation. The oak tree is deeply rooted – a symbol of strength and wisdom, harking back to Rochdale’s long heritage of achievement. "The river Roch flows... and in it strides a heron – now a common sight in the town centre. Herons were believed to be a symbol of guardianship and restful contemplation. The bird’s chicks call to it from the nest. New life, the next generation.
A WORKING TOWN HALL
Vic explained: "The design aims to represent the Town Hall’s use as a working environment.
Vic said: "This design takes most of its imagery from the Mayor’s Parlour. It represents the ideals of a greener future, whilst also pushing the Rochdale ideals of people working together, forever forward-thinking.
"Two of the Great Hall angels flank the organ that sits at the centre of the design. Dances, brass bands, singing and music have been the centre of many gatherings in this hall so have become the soul of this design. "Flora from the Great Hall’s incredible wall decor is growing around and into the design, holding a teapot and teacup (representing tea dances) at the top of the artwork."
"Of course, the river would not be complete without a fish. During the industrial period, fish disappeared from the Roch, but now they are back. A true contrast to the original era of the creation of the Town Hall’s decor, and so in its sense, futuristic." Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for equity, safety and reform at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This beautiful piece of artwork doesn’t just look stunning, it tells the story of Rochdale’s past and its future, and I think it’s spectacular. This project is about giving the town hall back to the people of Rochdale and helping them feel a connection to this incredible place, which belongs to us all." The town hall square is opening in phases with the town hall itself expected to reopen in early 2024. Lucy Fieldhouse Rochdale Style | 29

EXPLORING LOCAL HISTORY & GENEALOGY AT ROCHDALE LOCAL STUDIES Regular readers of Style magazine will have noticed that I often end my local history articles with a “thank you” to Rochdale Local Studies Library. I make a point of doing this because I rely so much on the vast resources at the library but, more importantly, the expertise, interest and support which the staff provide. The local studies facility at Touchstones has been a haven for me – and countless other local and family historians - for many years, providing a pleasant, welcoming and quiet atmosphere. At the beginning of October this year Rochdale Local Studies opened again to the public at their new base in the former Sparth Community Centre on Norman Road just off Dane Street near Asda and Aldi supermarkets. To be honest, I have missed being able to visit and use the local studies library in recent months!
Unsurprisingly, I was one of the first visitors to the new centre. It has free parking, level access and toilets. Supervisor, Janet Byrne has worked in Local Studies for many years and she and her colleagues Jenny and Shakra have always made me welcome. It was great to see them again in their new “home”. In a few summer months Janet and her team have transformed the empty spaces in the centre into the familiar atmosphere and invaluable resource centre of their former base. The computers, microfilm readers, maps, town plans, council minutes and hundreds of books, pamphlets, photographs and other records have been carefully moved from their former home at Touchstones and reestablished at Sparth. I must emphasise that a lot of these resources are fragile and unique, requiring expert handling. If you want to know practically anything about the history of Rochdale and surrounding villages such as Castleton, Littleborough, Milnrow, Norden and Wardle, this is the place to start. The Rochdale Observer is available on microfilm and is a vitally important resource for the people of the town, whatever the nature of their enquiry. Helpfully, there are also umpteen files of press cuttings for specific
36 | Rochdale Style
subjects such as sport, celebrities, entertainment and different parts of the borough and area. Many of the visitors to Local Studies are family historians, possibly inspired by the BBC television programme "Who Do You Think You Are?" It is possible to access the Ancestry and FindMyPast websites on the computers and see how far you can go back in your family tree. Janet and her team are always ready to assist you in your research and can save you time in suggesting routes into your enquiries. Family history research, of course, is nothing like it appears on television. It requires patience and careful attention to detail and record keeping. If you are new to this fascinating activity, I recommend arming yourself with a notebook, pencils, eraser and a pencil sharpener!
I suggest starting with a blank sheet of A4 or A3 paper and, starting at the foot of the page, writing down your own name and your siblings below the names of your parents and, above them if possible, your grand-parents. Put in as many dates of birth, marriages and deaths as you can accurately remember and gather any family documents such as wedding certificates, marriage records or obituaries. You have started your family history journey! You can print off templates and tables for your research from the internet. The Free BMD (births, marriages and deaths) website is a good place to start for events pre-1998. Ensure the accuracy of your research by cross-referencing multiple sources, be persistent and prepared for occasional roadblocks! Genealogy research can be a lifelong pursuit but the thrill of discovering your family's history makes it an exciting hobby.
The Local Studies Centre computers are bookable through email, telephone or in person. If you have a specific enquiry, I recommend contacting Janet and her team in advance and then they will be able to retrieve the relevant items from the vast resources in the local studies collection.

MILES TURNED INTO SMILES FOR UKRAINIAN CHILDREN Michael Buczman and Jamie White from Rochdale Borough Council's environmental management team recently travelled over 1,400 miles to the Ostoya Roztocze orphanage on the Polish-Ukrainian border to install a play area for children who have sadly become orphaned due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Michael has been involved in charity work for Ukraine since the war started over 18 months ago due to his close links as both his grandfathers were from Rochdale’s twin town of L’viv located in western Ukraine. After speaking to his colleague Jamie, an idea quickly began to come together to use their skills in play area design and installation to bring some joy to the children. Working closely with the charity, Giving to Ukraine, they managed to collect 8 pieces of preloved and surplus play equipment from the council, play equipment providers and landscape specialists, plus the materials and tools required to bring the idea to fruition. Arriving at the Ostoya Roztocze orphanage near Szczebrzesyn in the early hours of 10 October, they, along with the volunteers from Giving to Ukraine, set straight to work creating the play area. The team were also at work delivering solar panels and kitchen appliances to a new satellite orphanage in the same town, along with a donation of bikes from the Re-use Hub in Manchester. Michael said: "We were so happy to repurpose this play equipment that otherwise would not have been utilised in the UK and really thankful for the huge amount of support from colleagues and friends, who donated clothing, shoes, toiletries, and other essential items for the children that filled a truck.
"We also approached a number of businesses for help in and around Rochdale who jumped at the chance to be involved. Groundwork Landscapes and H Bell & Sons have been incredibly supportive providing all the materials needed to make this possible and it really did make a difference." Incredibly, the play area was installed in just over a day, with the team working from first light until dark. Jamie said: "The installation couldn't have gone better. The ground conditions were ideal and helped considerably. The team all put in a great effort and even had help from the children. We got to show them how the play equipment went together and how to install it. It was such a great experience and something I will never forget." The team were able to install a roundabout, seesaw, rocker, swing set, balance rope, spinning ring, digger for their sandpit, and even an outdoor cross trainer. Michael added: "It was a testament to teamwork and planning that we were able to achieve something in such a short space of time. "On the way back home we were already talking about what we could do on the next convoy. It would be brilliant if we could build another play area at another orphanage. Hopefully, the next one will be in Ukraine itself." Giving to Ukraine continues to support those affected by the war in Ukraine. If you wish to help the charity, you can find them on their website (www.givingtoukraine.com) or Facebook.

T h e R e t re a t c e l e b r a t e 3 0 f a b u l o u s y e a r s Popular Rochdale beauty salon, The Retreat, recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special celebratory VIP event. Distinguished guests were treated on arrival to a gift bag filled with goodies from the salon’s favourite brands, and were welcomed by a prosecco tower, doughnut stand and canapés, plus a multi-tiered white and gold cake by The Retreat's St Mary's Gate neighbour, Brown's Cakes. Guests also enjoyed entertainment by local singer and musician Edward Jamil, and cocktails from an on-site mixologist, and had the chance to do a spot of Christmas shopping including cashmere scarves, handbags, accessories and beauty gifts. The Retreat was originally established on Baillie Street as ‘Nails and Things’ in 1993 by Laura Prime. Nails and Things grew in popularity and moved from their original location to their current home on St Mary's Gate. In 2009, current owner Emma Fitton joined the business as a graduate. Its day spa facilities were launched, and ‘Nails and Things’ became rebranded as The Retreat. Emma bought the business in 2013, and today The Retreat works alongside local colleges providing work experience opportunities to aspiring beauty professionals and also provides up to two apprenticeships each year. The Retreat has survived two recessions, and a global pandemic with lockdowns and restrictions, which almost saw it close. Emma Fitton commented: "As we celebrate our 30th birthday, I am filled with immense sense of pride to own a long-standing business in the heart of our town. It has been an incredible journey, and I am grateful for the unwavering support of our loyal customers and my dedicated team who are professionals through and through offering a high standard of the latest beauty and nail services with a smile. "Looking back, we have created countless memories, shared laughter, and witnessed milestones together. As we embark on the next chapter, I am excited to continue serving our community, exploring new horizons, and creating even more cherished moments. Here's to 30 years of success, and to an exciting future ahead!" Emma added: "We managed to raise £350 for The Brain Tumour Charity in memory of my dad; thank you to the generosity of local businesses including a bouquet from The Bloom Room, Middleton, and vouchers from Chantilly." CHRISTMAS TOY APPEAL Rochdale Borough Council is now collecting donations for this year’s Christmas Toy Appeal, which helps make sure local children who are less fortunate have presents to open on Christmas Day. To help, all you need to do is donate an unwrapped, new gift suitable for a baby or child up to 16 years-old and leave it at your local library or Your Trust leisure centre. As Christmas raises awareness of the excess and waste created, once again organisers are asking people to consider donating a more environmentally friendly gift and supporting local shops where they can.
Council staff will make sure they reach the borough’s less fortunate children in time for Christmas Day. Toys are matched with the age and interests of the recipient. Since 2014 the appeal has provided much needed festive cheer for thousands of children and teenagers.
You can also order a gift online and send it straight to the appeal. KING'S BIRTHDAY PARTY RECEIVES ROYAL APPROVAL Heywood Business Group were honoured to receive a letter from King Charles III in October, which praised the 1940s Day and King's birthday celebrations organised by the group earlier in the year. Heywood Business Group in conjunction with Heywood Township presented the annual 1940s day on 17 June which included everything from tea dances and live entertainment to re-enactments and military vehicles! HOSPICE'S NEW FLAGSHIP STORE
SPRINGHILL LOTTERY
Springhill Hospice are thrilled to announce that their new shop, Springhill Heywood, opened its doors to the public on 1st November.
Springhill Hospice are delighted to announce the launch of a brand-new partnership, which will significantly increase lottery income for the Hospice over the coming years.
Following the restructuring of its retail outlets earlier in the year, the Hospice team took the decision to open a new, much larger premises – allowing them to raise more essential funds for the Hospice care Springhill Hospice provides across Heywood, Middleton, and Rochdale. Alongside the usual offerings of women's, men’s and homeware, the new shop also features Springhill’s very first baby department – Lilypads! Helping shoppers spring from bump to baby and beyond, with a huge offering of baby and children items. From prams to highchairs, toys to babygrows, Springhill Heywood hopes to be able to support families in the local community with all their needs. Springhill Heywood is located at 7 Church Place, Heywood, OL10 1LT.
In fact, through Springhill Hospice ceasing their existing lottery and choosing to work with Local Hospice Lottery instead, it is hoped that more than £1.7 million will be raised for palliative care over the next five years! For each £1 entry in the weekly draw, Local Hospice Lottery will give between 60% and 80% of profits from individuals playing in support of Springhill Hospice, directly to Springhill Hospice. This is significantly more than most other society lotteries and, to date, Local Hospice Lottery has raised nearly £55 million for hospice care across Great Britain! LEEVAN'S BOXING & FUNDRAISING SUCCESS Sixteen-year-old Leevan Fong has boxed for Littleborough ABC since he was just 8 years old, becoming North West champion at the age of 14. The inspirational teenager was then selected to represent England (North West region) in Sweden where he made it to the final and beat his opponent with a unanimous decision, winning the Gripen Cup. Leevan's mum Annie commented: "We are hoping this win will open many more opportunities for Leevan within his boxing career. We are all so proud of Leevan as a family and so is his small community of Littleborough and Leevan’s Boxing Coach Mark Oldham." Earlier this year, the Oldham College student also raised £900 for learning disability charity, Mencap, by running 100 miles in the space of a week - all whilst sitting his GCSEs! His sister, Laila-Lee, commented: "To be able to fit in the time to fundraise and run four marathons is incredible, but that's just Leevan's personality. He's amazing." Style would like to wish Leevan the best of luck with his boxing career and look forward to sharing news of his future achievements.

Celebrating 125 years of musical theatre in Rochdale If you're a Rochdalian, chances are you've witnessed at least one of Rochdale Musical Theatre Company's spectacular productions. Founded in 1898, and originally named Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society (RAOS), they are one of the most longstanding amateur theatre groups in the UK. The society has a virtually unbroken history of performances since its inception except for a short break at the end of World War I and a longer break during 1941 - 45 when many of their members were actively involved in World War II. They originally performed Light Operettas and Gilbert & Sullivan. Having played for many years at the Theatre Royal and then the Hippodrome in Rochdale, the society moved to a temporary home at the ABC cinema before moving to The Gracie Fields Theatre in 1977. In 2015 the society changed its name to Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) as, in more modern times, productions have been musical theatre rather than of an operatic nature. In October 2021, RMTC found their new home at the iconic town centre venue Champness Hall and brought theatre back to the heart of Rochdale, with their hugely successful production of Legally Blonde.

This was followed in May 2022 with Broadway musical comedy The Producers and then a sell-out run of Grease the Musical in May 2023. Secretary Kath Meredith, who has been a part of the society for over 50 years, commented: “It’s incredible to think how far the society has come over the past 125 years and that it has continued to evolve and thrive. RAOS, as it was then known, staged very different productions to what RMTC produce these days! It used to be more Pirates of Penzance than Grease and Legally Blonde!! But the aim remains the same - to bring quality, affordable live theatre to the people of Rochdale, to nurture local talent both on stage and behind the scenes and to raise money for charity in the process! “We are very much looking forward to our next production of Beauty & the Beast the musical in May 2024 - this will be the first time we have produced a Disney musical and it’s set to be a huge all singing all dancing production with fantastic scenery, costumes and unforgettable music from our live band. Please bring the whole family along and help us to celebrate 125 years of musical theatre in Rochdale!” Beauty & the Beast runs from 10 - 18th May 2024 at Champness Hall, Rochdale. Tickets are £16, available from 1st December at rochdalemtc.co.uk.
